20 Best 0W 40 Synthetic Oil (2022 Updated)

This is a note to Bobv. What you have stated about Chevrolet requiring this oil to avoid warranty issues is false. In the 2019 Chev Corvette Owner’s Manual on page 237 it CLEARLY states that a 5W-30 Dexos 1 oil may be used for STREET USE.

If you intend to track your Corvette then this does not apply. As you are leaving the oil in for up to a year I’m guessing you do not take your Corvette to any track. If you are you should be changing the oil much more frequently.

If you use your Corvette strictly on the street, save yourself some money and get a good make of 5W-30. Peace, love and Bobby Sherman.

I ordered this oil because of the Dexos2 rating. Like all other Mobil 1 oils, it is great stuff. This said however, I also picked up some Redline 5W/40 Euro formula which has the same Dexos2 approval.

I put it in the other vehicle that required the Dexos2 approval and you can tell the difference. They are the same make and engine’s with about the same miles on them and the Redline is just smoother.

This is the only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. You can’t go wrong with either product, and to be honest, Mobil 1 saved a race for me onetime and the car ended up winning. Upon teardown I was expecting to see pretty severe damage since the oil ended up being hotter than 360 degrees F for the last 20 laps of the race.

Only showed very minor heat pads on a couple of the bearings. we were all amazed. So trust me when I tell you that you can’t go wrong with Mobil 1 or the Redline.

This oil is specified by GM for my 2019 corvette. The price is very high but the car warranty requires this oil. I only have 1300 miles on the car and the change oil message came on. I am told that this is due to time (1 year) verses mileage.

I would hope that this high priced synthetic would last longer than a year.

I have been using Mobil 1 synthetic oil for over 25 years now. I just switched to Liquid Moly for the last year and a half for my European cars. No complaints so far. Only time will tell how good this oil really is.

2002 Boxter runs great on 0-40. Purchasing the oil change kit is super convenient.

Started using the Ultra Platinum 0w20 in my 2016 Accord Sport over a year ago. Initially I thought it was no different than a previous leading synthetic oil I had been using. After the first oil change using Ultra Platinum, I had some burn off and needed to add a little oil after 3500 miles.

Contacted Pennzoil about burn off in my 2. 4 direct injected engine and they recommended changing the PCV valve. I changed the PCV valve at 25,000 miles on the odometer, changed the oil again with Ultra Platinum and I have not needed to add any oil between oil changes.

I Check the oil at every fill up and it seems to stay exactly on the full mark when hot. I have to be honest here, I haven’t experienced this with any other readily available leading synthetic and I was a loyal M1 fan until now.

I will stick with the Ultra Platinum, it’s good stuff! Also my fuel economy seems to be more consistent compared to other synthetics I’ve tried in my car over the long run. Really glad I stuck with this oil and started using it at a low mileage.

Thanks to the Pennzoil Team for answering my concern and pointing out to change the PCV Valve and look for leaks. Changed my spark plugs too after switching to Ultra Platinum. Had some white looking ash on the ground electrodes and occasional hesitation to start.

New plugs, new PCV valve, staying with Ultra Platinum oil and occasional 91 fill up with Shell V power keeps this car running top notch. I’m a believer and a fan of this oil. I won’t use anything else.

Hope Pennzoil keeps making this oil.

Installed the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-20 SN-Plus oil in my 2016 Accord (2. 4L) in JAN 2020 with about 28,000 miles on the odometer. I was very curious a to see how this hyped up oil would perform.

Seemed good for about 3,000 miles, then the oil started burning off excessively when summer hit and temps outside rose to 108 to 110 degrees in my area. After 3,000 miles on this oil, I was not expecting that much burn off to the point I was out of oil for the next top off.

Mind you this oil is not readily available on shelves and has to be ordered. I’m no scientist or oil chemist but, it seems to be a no brainer that the flash point of Gas to Liquid (GTL) base stock in Pennzoil Synthetic oils are much lower than PAO (Group IV) base stock oil.

Numerous additives have to be carefully balanced in the process to make this Pennzoil GTL oil work and compete with PAO base stock oils. Further self analysis revealed that GTL base stock is between a Group III (hydro-cracked) and below a Group IV (true synthetic) base stock.

Similar in structure but not a stable as PAO based oil. Your engine won’t notice the difference between GTL and PAO true synthetic oil until it gets low on oil from burning off and that my folks is what I’m worried about.

Where is it going? Is it changing back to a gas form and evaporating in extreme heat (at the valve guides and piston rings)? This can be the best oil known to man but, if I have to constantly monitor oil consumption and order oil that is not on shelves, then I need to move back to PAO based oils for reliability.

Truth be told, marketing hype is at its finest here with the Pennzoil GTL products. Pennzoil Ultra is a hard to get oil off the shelf and just makes people want to try it (like me) and see what all the hype is about.

, It’s not Dexos 1 GEN 2 certified to guarantee performance. So what makes it soo special? Regular Pennzoil Platinum out specs the flagship Ultra. Doesn’t make sense. Also getting tired of Pennzoil not controlling their documentation updates online for their products.

PDF information documents dated 2018 but the Platinum oil is API SP rated as of May 2020. CUT & PASTE corrections. What about Ultra Platinum? is it going to be SP rated? When is that document getting updated? Next Year? That’s why I don’t care about this hyped up GTL based oil that does not have a mileage guarantee for XX,XXX amount of miles between oil changes like other Group IV true synthetic oils.

That 500,000 mile engine warranty does not mean squat to me when the oil burns off and I’m going through 6 quarts of oil during an 8,000 mile oil change interval on the oil life monitor and my car only holds 4.

4 quarts. That’s poor performance and probably why it does not meet DEXOS 1 GEN 2 standards. Nice product but, needs a lot of work for me to come back. I don’t trust it.

Bought this from a Napa Auto Parts. Came in a grey bottle, says ultra platinum, but date reads 25 APR 14… is that the manufacture date or the expiration? My other Pennzoil bottles are yellow, exceeds newer requirements than the ultra platinum… is Napa selling oil from 2014? Either way I’m not putting it in my vehicle.

I’ll happily go get standard platinum. Waste of my money and time.

Been using the Purple for many years now, and have NO oil related break downs, race cars, dirt & asphalt, drag, RV’s, trucks, light duty and heavy, and even motorcycles, touring and drag, with the same results, the oils and lubricants of today work much better that the oils of the past.

this 0w-40 is for our personal vehicles, and so far have 160,000 and it runs great with normal maintenance. Highly recommend this!.

I have been using Mobil 1 synthetic for my cars for the last 30 years. This allows me to change the oil once per year thus saving the environment (and my pocket). In the early days, Mobil used to advertise the oil as being good for 25K miles (I remember the ads stating you could drive around the world) – nowadays they have dropped those claims – I think to pad their pockets.

I lived in Germany for 3 years and bought a new BMW 3 series while I was there – I drove about 50K kilometers during that time – only towards the end did the BMW dealer recommend an oil change because of the synthetic oil that was in the engine.

In Europe they hardly ever change the oil less than 2 years unless there are a lot of miles on the car – in the US, we waste a lot of oil and damage the environment because of the marketing pressure to change the oil at less than optimum levels.

I would strongly recommend using this synthetic oil as they are the ones who started it.

Provides slightly better fuel economy than Audi’s recommended Castrol, about 1 MPG better on the highway. Never had an engine problem using it in my 1999 and newer Mercedes cars for the past 15 years.

Not a good choice for the the older classic cars that need sulfur in the oil (dino oil) to expand older engine gaskets so that they don’t leak. Bought my used 1958 Mercedes off the Mercedes-Benz dealer’s showroom floor that was covered with oil; apparently they had put this oil in that car when it was traded in; drove it home, put in conventional oil and the leaks stopped.

I feel secure driving my car when I’m using Mobil 1 full synthetic oil. I also compared the price between Costco and AutoZone. Fellows I was surprised that AutoZone price was cheaper by a few cents. Good job AutoZone.

After buying my last new car, for the first time I started having my oil changed at the dealer with the recommended regular 5w30 oil. Well, I decided to start changing my own oil again, partly to save money, and partly to start using synthetic oil in my engine.

I see all these new viscosities 0w-20 and others designed for cold climates. My OEM recommended is 5w30. Then I see Mobile 1 offers a 0w-40 specifically designed for European cars. 0w-40 sounds like the like a great choice for any climate and gasoline engine.

My car has 100K miles I always followed the OEM guidelines of 5w-30and changed oil every 5K miles. I haven’t had any major issues, but I have noticed recently that my engine seems to not run quite as smoothly, even after an oil change.

I switched to this Mobil 1 0w-40 and my engine smoothed right out. Knowing it provides superior lubrication under “any” condition this is my new oil. When on sale this is the best you can buy.

This is the oil my sportsman called for so that’s what it gets. Sales staff was amazing on answering my questions about the oil plus a few other questions I had unrelated to this purchase. Staff has always been been very helpful in giving me tips that has saved me time and money on past purchases.

Even when they are busy all the staff works together to get me tips, tricks and never make me feel rushed. I have been to other stores Intown but hands down. They are my go to spot for parts and questions.

I’ve got an 05 Dodge Sprinter 2500 and when my first Oil Change was to happen at 10000 miles. I switched from a Multi Grade Non Synthetic to a Synthetic Mobil 1 0w40. I have had an overhaul of crank shaft bearings and a new cylinder head, water pump, drain and fill service of coolant with heater plug installed.

I recommend Mobil 1 any day.

The castrol engine oil is the number engine oil I personally recommend for your oil change. Is a full synthetic and quality oil. Since 2015 , I moved from Germany to Michigan I always use this castrol full synthetic oil and all the vehicles I used this particular oil drives good nobody even came to me that there vehicles have a engine problem.

This is the recommended oil for BMW and I highly recommend it. The individual quart size is made in Germany.

if you own a vehicle with a turbo engine / a mercedes. this is a very good oil to use. flows nicely in winter, but still gives you that upper temp range coverage. i have used many oils, this one gives you a decent bang for your buck.

this is pretty standard for castrol edge / full syn oils — i haven’t used the high mileage or conventional oil for this brand. i’m sure they’re pretty good too.

I ve been a Castrol user since I could first find it. I used to be very involved in Italian Auto journalism. I remember wondering about Castrol since its name was everywhere in European racing and motorsports.

However, I was disappointed that I couldn’t find any here. When it first showed up state side, I used it at every oil change with great success in all my autos. Being young and into European auto racing I drove all of my vehicles ridiculously hard and at high rpms.

I am happy to say I have never had a single car go down do to engine failure or wear. All my cars were driven that way to at least 200K miles. The advantage: Castrol and 3000 mile oil changes. When the synthetic came out I was on-board.

The first thing I noticed was the engine ran 10 degrees cooler. Better lubrication even at the highest RPMS. You can take a synthetic multi-grade oil to higher mileage between changes; say 7,000 miles.

HOWEVER, You should change the oil filter once between and with each oil changes. Lets say 7000 miles between oil and filter and oil filter every 3,500 miles. Synthetic oil doesn’t break down as fast as conventional but microscopic fragments of metal and combustion blow-by still get into the oil where the filter must remove them.

I have taken a Toyota Camry to 300K on that system and that Camry is still going strong *. 0-40w synthetic is the top of the game in the states (even if your car manufacturer calls for 5-30w) and in my opinion with over a million miles of driving – Castrol is the Best.

I only wish they would start carrying the Castrol 5-50w synthetic (theoretically better still) like most volume outlets did prior to 2014. * One word of caution. Talk your the dealer before switching from a conventional oil to any synthetic in a car older than 13 years old with high mileage.

It could start small oil leaks past older high mileage engine gaskets because it is so slippery.

1998 Tacoma, I used to drive this truck for 250miles/day, Using Castrol-GTX/3000miles. Soon as it reached 1500miles, gpm went from 20 to 17. I tried every things that people recommended on the internet to improve gpm.

sparkplug changed every 25k-30kmiles(do not use Bosh Platinum, just OEM Nippon Denso plug). Nothing worked. Soon as I switched over to Mobil1 Sync with OEM oil filter. My truck drove better, smoother, quieter and gpm remain @20gpm until the next oil changed which is 10Kmiles.

You can see the Viscosity of the oil remain the same, just darker. So I switched all my whole family vehicles(5 Toyotas, sedan-truck-van-SUV) to used this type of oil since 2000. Since I maintenance all vehicles myself, this 10kmiles oil change save me a lots of times and $$$$.

Let me tell you an impressive story about this oil. I gave my son the truck for his college years, in 4year. When the truck did not run(because of the MAF sensor clogged), he called me to come checked the truck, there was no oil on the dipstick.

DRIED!!!! Soon as I cleaned the MAF, I cranked the engine, it started right away. there is no issue with the engine. I still driving it now. over 200kmiles/24yrs still running like new. why buy new vehicles since mine run and looks like new plus paid off.

Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5W20 until 75,000 miles then Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5W30. My wife’s 2016 KIA SOUL would crank and run with no issues right up until someone hit her from behind on the Interstate and totaled her car.

She was going about 55 mph and they were going at least 80 to 100 mph. The care was folded under, but the engine was running like normal while the Highway Patrol had to pry her out of the car and the Tow Truck guy had to open the hood and disable it to get the engine to stop running.

My wife suffered no injuries. We went and purchased a new KIA SPORTAGE and are using Mobil 1 Full Synthetic Oil in it. Who ever buys that car for the engine is getting a solid KIA SOUL engine. At 200,000 miles we started using Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 20,000 mile oil.

That Soul would crank and start like a new car. We have a 2001 Ford F-250 V-10 Triton Crew Cab and 2002 Ford F-250 5. 4L Crew Cab 4X4 and they both are above 200,000 miles and we run Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 20,000 mile oil in them.

I have used MOBIL 1 SYNTHETIC in all my Porsches (street and track) since the 80’s, but that is another story. This story is about a lawn mower which I bought new and ran “wide open” as a residential “bush hog” for 32 years.

I changed the oil every spring with MOBIL 1 SYNTHETIC and noticed each year the oil while dirty (because of the atrocious operating environment) the engine used no oil and performed flawlessly. I became fascinated at about 20 years when I realized this lawnmower was falling apart in every way, wheels, carb, housing sheet metal, studs and bolts backing out of the engine, it was a complete wreck EXCEPT: it burned no oil and suffered no mechanical failures after running for decades and thousands of hours wide open (wished I had a HOBBS).

To say the least, I loved this mower, my friends and neighbors howled at my eccentricity, but I paid them no mind, I know and understand true devotion, PLUS I had an ongoing SCIENCE PROJECT which I was going to push (literally and figuratively) to its conclusion.

At 30 years the mower deck was “fully ventilated” and was probably dangerous, it needed its third set of wheels and the whole affair was just simply “string and bailing wire”. None the less, I was not giving up on “The Red Devil”.

I had owned this mower half my life and I was beginning to wonder who was going to be the last one running. I had hoped to open the engine one day and examine the wear index. However, at 32 years my better half insisted that “The Red Devil” had to go.

I presented it to a young ARMY vet (who had admired it from afar) with the understanding that he would only use MOBIL-1 SYN and contact me IF the engine ever needed to be taken down as I wished to see the mysteries within.

In great solemnity he assured me he would honor the terms and nervously loaded The Red Devil it into his truck. I take great comfort in knowing that if there is a heaven for lawn mower engines, “The red devil” is holding court! I concluded years ago that The Red Devil’s longevity was 100% due to MOBIL-1 SYNTHETIC.

To this day, I can not hear a mower run without harking back to all the good times with The Red Devil. In spite of all my pleas, my attorneys say I do not have a case against MOBIL and have suggested therapy.

This motor oil is specified for the C8 Corvette. It is very hard to find on the shelf. Mobil has changed the name to Mobil 1 Supercar. The formulation has not changed. Walmart had it in stock, and at the best price.

Used this in my 2018 Camaro 1LE. After GM changed what they recommend, there isn’t alot of 0W-40 Dexos 2 to choose from. Mobile 1 is great oil anyway, just a little pricey.

Generally speaking, you aren’t going to notice a difference between oils while riding. What I like about this XPS oil is the bottle. It is easier to pour from this than a standard oil bottle.

Best price I could find on the market and from what all my friends that have Can-Am;s have told me I was impressed with this product. Will buy from again. I live in a high climate cold area

Been using Amsoil, exclusively, for decades, in many vehicles. Never one oil related issue. Currently have a 2020 Ram 2500 6. 4 gas engine. Those engines are known for cam/lifter issues. Most “tick”, some experience cam and/or lifter failure.

My truck has 21k miles on it so far. I change oil & filter every 7k miles. Engine is not showing any sign of typical failure. No tick whatsoever. I have been an Amsoil dealer for 20+ years, and mostly only for my own needs.

Amsoil is the best IMO. Also, check out PROJECT FARM on YouTube if you need further proof.

I have used Valvoline engine oils since I owned my first car when I was 18. Before that my old man has used it since as long as I can remember. I have gone from Maxlife blend in my older higher mileage cars (88 Dodge Caravan and 96 Hyundai Accent) to SynPower, now known as Advanced Full Synthetic in my newer cars (2009 Suzuki SX4, 2016 Toyota Rav4, and 2022 Cadillac XT5).

In all my years of using these oils my engines have always ran like the day I have taken the car home brand new with never any issues related to the engines themselves regardless of the engine manufacturer.

This oil has advanced well throughout the years getting better and better and has always done a phenomenal job in maintaining the reliability in all my car engines. I give my car oil changes every 6 months before the extreme seasons of winter and summer so they have a fresh batch for the coldest and hottest days.

Best protection for extreme temperatures. I also started using other Valvoline lubricants for other components like the differentials for the AWD system and the transmission fluid. Valvoline is a safe bet and among the best of the best you can give your beloved workhorse.
