20 Best 2K High Build Primer (2022 Updated)

Able to lay down a thick layer of primer mixed 4:1. Definitely need 2mm gun for that ratio. Current siphon gun not really set up for that, which caused some sputtering of product. Cranking up the pressure only created ripples in the surface.

Dialed the pressure back down and narrowed the fan. Still sputtered but able to get a thick coat. Garage is cold (45F) so set-up required >24 hours. Used radiant heat lamp to speed up curing which seemed to work well.

Awaiting HVLP gun w/2mm nozzle for next application. Can also use as sealer mixed 4:1:2.

A great product for a reasonable price. Works just like it says, I use this as a filler, surfacer, and primer. It’s thick enough to work well in all three scenarios depending on the amount of thinner you use in it.

Also a great high build filler. Although on fiberglass such as Corvette’s if you need extreme film build a polyester would work better. If body work is very good, this Upol would be great on fiberglass also.

I am a machinery builder and use this primer to coat the bare steel frames of our fabricated parts. I use a spot filler afterwards to fill any deep gouges from grinding or plate clamp bites. Sand to 120 and coat with industrial enamel.

Leaves a very good finish and the fast cure time of the primer lets me do in 1 day what use to take 2-3. AWESOME.

I had no problem with the primer but the clear coat I did. It does not say anything about cleaning the nozzle before 2nd or 3rd coats. It splattered starting with the 2nd coat and nothing I could do could stop it after that.

I didn’t even use the whole can. You have to turn it upside down and spray out the clear coat in the can in between coats and clean off the nozzle and it doesn’t say anything about that on the can. This is the first time I have done this so I didn’t know the importance of doing that.

Next time I will but I’m going with a cheaper brand.

2K paint in a can that sprays like a gun without the clean up. win/win! Quality product with professional results. Sure it costs a little more but this primer is awesome for coverage and sand ability.

One can is enough for the hood of a car, or the top of a mid-sized sedan. I did 50% overlap, plus some extra attention to edges, and a few early layers for some deeper scratches. It dries nicely. Wet sanded with 600 grit, and it looked the same, minus the insect and random specks.

The finish was perfect. It stuck very well to metal, filler, and residual paint. The new top coat stuck very well to this, and looked great. Honestly, this flowed better than the topcoat. This stays put with any of the types of paints and primers I’ve thrown on top.

Most importantly, it does not drip from the nozzle. The fan is nice, and I don’t have to worry about special handling when priming flat surfaces. There are enough solids in this that it fills and builds well.

It’s better than the grey high-build and enamel filler primers I’ve used as far as hiding stray 120 grit swirls. But it’s a primer, not a filler. If you have any gouges, dents, chips, etc, you should dress those prior to priming.

I bought this aerosol paint to cover some bare metal before laying down some SEM seam sealer. I had some self etching primer but SEM didn’t recommend it under the sealer. I tried to wet sand the blend edge of the primer to the painted area after spraying the area and letting it dry.

Unfortunately, the paint wouldn’t feather, it lifted. I’ve used this primer successfully when priming an entire part. I would use a different primer in the future for a spot repair. This was my experience and am I’m just providing my experience with the product.

Someone else may have a different experience with it.

I’m painting my boyfriend’s truck (’94 F150). The primer went on great, no spits from the nozzle. I painted 2 coats and the last coat I used black so I can see where I sand (and so his truck doesn’t look horrible while I wait for the color paint and clear coat).

Prepped by sanding with 150 (lots of paint down to the metal, and some rust), then went up from there, washed with white vinegar/dawn/hot water mix, then wiped down with alcohol.

Touch up small areas instead of mixing primer and hardner. Worked great.

I used this to coat the window channels after replacing rusted sections. Sprayed nicely, Flows well, dried smooth. Read the can, shelf life is short (about 24 hours) once you pop the catalyst so make sure all your parts are ready to go.

I got two wet coats on front and back window channels and the front windshield cowl out of one can. It’s great for small repairs but don’t think you are going to epoxy entire panels with one can, you might get one coat on a quarter panel or fender.

2K epoxy primer in an aerosol is just a great idea! For small projects, instead of setting up a paint booth and gun and everything that goes with it, you can save a lot of time and skip the effort. This stuff cures hard.

I sprayed a truck fender about 5 years ago – my daily driver – and it still looks great, with no rust-through. With the proper abrading, it forms a good mechanical bond. The adjustable spray tip provides a good fan and is adjustable from vertical to horizontal.

The OEM reps really take care of their customers. Also, this gray is pretty light in color. I wanted white but it wasn’t available in the US. this color is the next best thing. Two cans completely covers the outside skin of a door.

I got two cans but only needed one. Good stuff and great coverage. Filled in 400 grit scratches on a fiberglass Harley fairing. Sprayed a two tone waterborne metallic base coat and a urethane metallic base coat over it and it came out great!.

Was needing some black 2k primer specifically, and reviews led me to this. I have been most pleased with the quality; a bit on the thick side – I’d recommend juicing it 10% or a bit more to help with spray-ability.

Seems to build quickly; 3 coats thinned a bit will fill about any sand scratch in the 80 grit range, but YOU won’t prime that soon, right?! Sands like many less expensive 2k primers (Montana, etc. ), and easier than some.

Makes a good sealer, as well. Hard to beat the value here, and I will be buying more.

Pros: PRICE! Quality seems good, I’ve used much more costly products this seems on par with them. Imperfections won’t bleed through. The black doesn’t need a guide coat, it dulls where sanded and leaves a gloss where missed.

Cons: Very thick! Even with my 2. 5mm prime gun it needs thinning. Also a bit hard to sand initially but once the surface is knocked off it sands quite well.

I purchased this black primer initially to be a sealer over gray epoxy primer. It did an excellent job for that on the black 2018 Silverado which I painted both sides It also did a very good job on the last dents without the epoxy base The product is thick but smooth,without much overspray or strong odor.

It sands very easily and feathers nicely. I have been doing body repair for 46 years. It takes a lot to impress me.

high solids. good build. reduce down for sealer. great product. have used many primers. one of the best and definately the best for the money.

This is a great high build primer. Its easy to sand. Ive used this brand for years.

I read some of the reviews and feel a more objective review is needed for this product. I have traditionally used WAY MORE EXPENSVE 2K primers and felt I wouldn’t try a less expensive product with the thought “cheaper is not better”.

Well. I was wrong. 1. This is a thick product but all are! Lets be honest, you need to know your gun, you need to know how to use a gun and how to apply. If you are using a junk Chinese gun well, no wonder it isn’t working for you! You need to know the size of the feed nozzle.

duhhhhh! 2. I mixed the product according to package recommendation. I did not use a reducer and the end product turned out very well. In fact I was surprised how well it turned out. I had to adjust my priming gun a bit but nothing that problematic.

3. Sanding this product was fine. I laid on 4 coats on a hail damaged/repaired deck lid. Wet sanded it with 320 and then 400 grit. Please understand, this is not “liquid mud” so don’t think you’ll fill dings and poor body work.

Do the body work to perfection before priming. 4. This product seemed to cover minor scratches from the repair work nicely. I haven’t finish painted the deck lid because I still have the roof to repair but I believe it’s “ready for paint”.

I’d recommend knowledgeable people to give this a try.

Originally I left bad feedback after raging over a bunch of runs in primer. This was the first time using the product and I followed the instructions on the can and added some reducer. This primer is a good high build primer that cures quickly.

Shoot it with at least a 1. 8 tip. Blocks good with 220 followed with 400. I do high end restorations and not production quickies. Quality jobs dont have to have the the most expensive products. everything is in the preparation.

Budget filler, primer, paint and clear hold up fine when applied correctly.

Excellent cover over raw metal, existing paint, plastic filler and putty – all of which were present in a rehabilitation project of a rough life 1995 Dakota work truck. Primer provided a complete hide and excellent adhesion on all those surfaces.

Each coat dryed fast (10 minutes) and sanded easily with a single uniform surface color for the whole truck. Extra spot coats were applied to high build and even out body work imperfections. Very good product and if I need to prime amy other project, this primer is what I will use.

I sprayed using a 1. 4 tip HVLP elcheapo paint gun ($10) and a 21 gallon 2. 5 HP compressor ($150), both from the freight in the harbor store. Primer flowed flawlessly straight out of the can.

The only thing I dont like is the time it takes before you can sand. Once it is sandable …it is the best promer surfacer I have used. Sand paper wears out before it plugs.

Good Price, Flows well, high build, easy to sand, long pot life. I have shoot more than 5 gallons this past 12 months with great results. also very little shrinkage, i usually wait 72 hours before i apply any top coats.

The primer worked, but the container it came in failed. Items were not properly packed & no.10 lid lock was not in place which created a nice little mess.

It was time for Geoman’s Metro to get a 25th Birthday paint job and this Rustoleum sandable primer helped prep the body. Dents were filled and this primer covered bare metal perfectly, sprays evenly does not spit out and nozzle does not hurt the fingers like the cheaper ones sometimes do, important after a day of bodywork.

The Birthday paint job looks great by the way.

Used this with the primer to paint my engine and accessories. On the first night I painted the block which went great. I cleared the nozzles and then the next day got my valve cover and vacuum pump ready to paint.

The cans say you have 48 hours to use them, I waited around 24 hours before spraying the other parts. The primer sprayed out terribly and left a dusty sandy finish. It also sprayed out paint globs so I had no shot at a decent finish.

The paint can behaved similarly. So now I am left needing to sand my valve cover and vacuum pump again and repaint them, either with another 80 dollars worth of eastwood paint or with something from a local store.

Very disappointed. Use it all at once and you be very pleased. So ignore the cans instructions or else you will be wasting lots of money and time. You would think that paint which costs so much would have reliable instructions.

Tried to spray a flat aluminum aircraft instrument panel but the spray made it difficult. The spray pattern is very large for a spray can and you have to push the nozzle down all of the way to get full pressure from the can or it splatters.

Also, if you are pointing the can at the piece when you press the nozzle, it splatters as it starts spraying. I shook the can for more than the recommended two minutes before and after releasing the catalyst.

Stopped after seeing it wasn’t working that well.

I’m in the process of restoring a 1970 Harley Aermacchi Rapido. The bike was painted black and I’ve used the Eastwood Ceramic Engine Gloss Red on the gas tank, front and rear fenders. I was kind forced to do this way because I don’t have spray gun and Eastwood doesn’t sell its auto paints in an aerosol can.

The can said the “pot time” is 48 hours so I shook the can for two minutes and during the spraying. Towards the end of the can I noticed it was spitting pieces of paint. I had to lightly wet sand the front fender to remove the pieces of paint.

I didn’t have another Eastwood Ceramic red gloss paint and at $27+ shipping and tax I was not going to buy another can. Beware if you try to use the full spray can.

This sprayed out this primer with a 1. 4 tip and it was thick. I further reduced it about 10% with the recommended reducer and it sprayed much better. The only drawback, so far, is the long cure time.

I tried dry sanding the primer after a few hours, per the instructions, then the next day, and it still loaded up my sandpaper. I recommend waiting 24 hrs. and to use a a quality paper like Summits Carborundum Gold paper.

The worst thing is to have to work too hard to sand primer. I was using a different sandpaper that loaded up too quickly. Otherwise, this primer laid out well and built up nicely. After letting it dry completely, and after the initial sanding, I’m pretty confident this primer will do a good job as a primer surfacer and will level nicely.

Great product for the price. I tried to force the primer unreduced through a 1. 4 tip, knowing it was going to spray out way too thick. I just wanted to get the product on the panel knowing that most of it was going to be removed through block sanding.

It did sand very easily and leveled out well. I will purchase a 1. 8 or larger tip for my spray gun before applying more of this primer in the future.

Great product. Have used several gallons in the past. Great light color. Seals and covers well. Sands easy without clogging paper.

This product is heavy and pretty much needs reducer added to get it to spray. As others have stated add about 1 part reducer to 4 parts paint and 1 part activator, then it sprays pretty decent. Don’t expect it to cover scratches real well ay this mixture.

It seemed to spray a bit smoother from my old siphon feed gun than from an HVLP. It does sand very well after a day or two. For the price point it is a good product.

This stuff is tuff. Builds up great. Instructions say mix without reducer. After having to clean out gun from clogs added some reducer (medium) layed down better. Wet sands great. Ratio 6-1-1 did best.

Being an auto body and paint pro for the last fifteen years, I’ve used almost every product out there. This stuff beats the rest in terms of sprayability, thickness building and blocking. Don’t waste your money on the name brand stuff.

Been using this on my 47 Chevrolet. It has deep pitting and all the usual bumps a 60 year old car has. Four coats covers up some of the worst pits. It sands well and sticks well. Follow the mix directions PDF and you will not have any issues.

Happy to recommend. But as with all paint stuff it is only as good as your prep.

This 2 part primer is a very good product at an excellent price. Sprays nice, sands great after a day or so. The can arrived looking like it was dropped more than once , really beat up. My other complaint is no spraying directions, what is the mixing ratio with the hardener? What is the drying time? Time between coats? I had to Email tech to find the mix ratio.

Working on a restoration of a 73 Ford F-100 and needed a better color for the engine bay area. While rust treating the bay, picked up a can of High Build Primer and was happy to discover it has a nice bluish-grey tint to it perfect for replacing the original Ford baby blue in the engine bay that I do not care for.

The goal is to get the engine core with its darker Ford Blue to pop up visually within the bay, but still keep everything looking like it was “Ford-true. ” The High Build Primer complements the two tone exterior blue of the truck nicely.

Will coat with Clear Matte from POR-15 to finish it off.

This is by far the worst self leveling primer I have ever applied by brush. It leaves bad brush streaks, if you thin it to try to get the primer to fill in, then it runs everywhere. I applied this over top of two coats of the rust preventative paint.

I now have a mess that I need to sand off completely.

I’ve used a lot of different brands of primers over the years, I mainly restore farm equipment. By far the best adhesion to metal and it does get rather hard, fills good. I will buy again
