20 Best 35Mm Lens For Sony (2022 Updated)

I purchased the Sony 24/1. 4 GM at the very end of 2020. I had been deliberating on the 20/1. 8 vs the 24/1. 4 for some time & not really getting anywhere with the decision. in the last few days of 2020 Sony had a cashback program running plus there was a shop based sale – the double discount prompted me to make a purchase.

I have many older, manual focus ‘classic’ lenses, that I adapt to modern cameras. I enjoy doing astrophotography & nightscapes. most older wide angle lenses I’ve tried on the night sky do not work that well, giving mis-shapen stars off the central axis, so that was one of the drivers I had for getting one of the Sony wide angles which have a good reputation for use on the night sky.

I went for the 24 over the 20 for two reasons. 1) the f1. 4 on the 24 being of value for night use, 2) In landscapes, over the years I’ve had a preference around for 24mm – I used a 17-35 zoom for a number of years & often found the wider end ‘too wide’ – its not the field of view you get, its the ‘balance’ of the relative size of objects with a scene foreground to far distance.

Around 17mm I personally found the far distant vistas were so small & insignificant that they were lost in the image. it was all about foreground interest, which didn’t suit me so well. around 24mm I personally find that you get the dramatic perspective a wide angle gives (28mm doesn’t do it enough for me) while the distance is still big enough in the image to be appreciated.

It’s just a personal taste thing I guess. So that is why I ended up with the 24 & not the 20 (hold that thought) Because of my love of older lenses, & the various restrictions that we have put up with in 2021 its fair to say I’ve not really used the 24GM sufficiently yet to really comment on its optical performance, from what I have seen myself & read about, its essentially optically ‘perfect’ for all intents & purposes (which to an old lens lover, I see as a pro & a con).

It’s a nice size, quite light, AF on recent Sony cameras is as you would expect, fantastic. although, I personally don’t really value AF that highly on a wide angle lens. I like that it has the ability to declick the aperture, I like the provision of a button on the lens.

It has a modest 67mm filter thread (I use the Lee Filter 100 system so the adapter I use makes the front much wider though). I deducted one star on the ‘design’ because compared to my older lenses I use alot, it feels obviously ‘plasticy’ vs the all metal solid construction on older lenses.

I generally prefer older manual focus lenses for anything below a short telephoto because I just know the electronics in modern lenses is going to pack up within 20 years & be uneconomical to repair.

older lenses just go on & on & on. More than this though, most modern lenses drop in value instantly & continue to drop. older ‘classic’ lenses on the other hand are appreciating, some crazily so. It feels better for me to put my money into those than modern lenses in most cases.

Also, the older lenses that have become ‘classics’ (& therefore more sought after, driving costs up), tend to have optical ‘flaws’ that give them character, that is ‘prized’ by some in certain uses. most modern lenses are all technically ‘perfect’ & lack character.

hence my personal preference to older lenses. Now, recall I mention ‘hold that thought’ above? Well during 2021 I ended up with a Sony A7S3 which among other things, I’ve been using as a handheld vlogging camera.

I found the 24mm on the camera in this use case to not be quite wide enough, especially with the stablisation on which crops the image slightly. So, when the opportunity arose mid 2021 for get the Sony 20/1.

8 on another ‘double discount’, I took the plunge. The 20 on the A7S3 is perfect for handhold vlogging, being both wider field of view AND smaller & lighter, so if that figures in your use case, go for the 20 over the 24, both are excellent.

As the nights are drawing in now in the northern hemisphere, I do hope to get out with both the 24 & 20 & put them to the test under the night sky to see which I prefer for this type of usage. Now I am just waiting for a double discount deal on the new 14mm & I will be set!.

This was my first lens purchased for the Sony Fx3. 35mm is a sweet spot focal length for videos. I chose this over the G Master after days of watching reviews online. The main deciding factor was focus breathing.

There is a clear consensus online that the f/1. 8 has less focus breathing than the 1. 4. I would also be paying a lot more for less than 1 stop in the 1. 4. So I made my choice and filmed my first short film.

Very happy. Although at 1. 8, the lens still shows focus breathing so it’s not 100% perfect. It’s subtle and probably only noticeable to any of us who are perfectionists. The internals also shift in weight when you tilt up or down, but not an issue even on a balanced gimbal.

Also, the lens strap that comes with the many gimbals for smoother operation will end up on the broad focus ring of this lens, just an fyi if you plan to use motor operated (manual) focus on a gimbal like the SC2.

The 35mm focal length is a crowded field in the Sony E-Mount (B&H lists 25 lenses as of Dec 2020), but unfortunately (in my opinion) there is no lens that checks all the boxes yet. The Sony 35mm f/1.

8 comes close: sharpness, weight, usability, nice damped manual control, good value (when on sale), and very effective and silent auto-focus. Very usable in both stills and video. It fails though in two areas: the first being rendering a blend image with a meh character, and the second its LoCa/color aberration/fringing.

The latter was the killer feature for me. I’ve used a lot of lenses and I think the fringing on the 35mm f/1. 8 is the worst by far. It is horrible. In a typical landscape sunny day, fringing is horrendous even at f/9 requiring correction in Lightroom of like 17-18 (scale goes to 20!).

Unless you’re shooting indoors and avoiding high-contrast shots, I recommend staying away from this lens.

This is my main lens. I used it paired with the Sony 6300. The 35mm is so versatile for almost any situation. The focal length is wide enough to shoot indoors and small spaces. The 1. 8 F stop is absolutely perfect for low light.

I’ve attached example photos in a low light situation. I would recommend this lens to anyone who wants to shoot in conditions with very little light or for something who wants to keep one main lens on their camera body and not switch between lenses.

Look up recent reviews on the net – everybody is going to tell you, go for the G Master lens. Not me! The older design might have small flaws, apparently there are variations, issues with decentering.

As I hate the soulless perfection of modern designs I’m perfectly fine with that. And I don’t see much of them. Works great on both Sony A7ii & smart-adapted to my Nikon Z5, great reactivity, not top notch.

On a more modern Sony body it should be even more reactive. It’s not a small lens. Overall I ‘m very happy with this glass.

I have rented from lens rentals many times and always had a great experience. Their customer service is excellent and equipment has always been high quality. However, this time, the lens just would not focus tack sharp as I’m accustomed to with my own lenses.

It was only something you would see if you really zoomed in, but that’s important to me. I rented the exact same lens a couple of months ago and it was perfect and sharp. I contacted customer service and they did answer my emails and offered some tips to try, but I just do not feel as if it was my equipment- none of my other lenses had the same issue.

It just wasn’t the level of equipment that I’ve come to expect when paying to rent. I am very picky about the sharpness of my images and some might not have even noticed the “soft focus” that I found this lens to have.

Again, service was professional, the lens was usable, and I recommend lens rentals to others …. However, I only used this lens once for the month that I rented it due to the lesser quality images it produced.

I just want to start this review by saying that I’m a HUGE Sigma fan. I own their 60-600 Sport and their 70-200 Sport and they are both phenomenal lenses. Unfortunately I just can’t get behind this lens.

When it first arrived, I can honestly say I have NEVER seen a lens with that terrible of front-focus (out of the box). I immediately put it on the Sigma USB dock and had to adjust all the focal ranges to be anywhere from +17 to +20 just to get the focus point to where it should be.

The dock was literally maxed out. Once the dock did its thing, the sharpness of this lens was unbelievably good, but I then ran into the next issue that was the final straw (and not the first time I’ve experienced this with a Sigma Art lens unfortunately – as it also happened with my 18-35 1.

8). As soon as you get away from the central focus point and go to any other non-central focus point, the lens cannot get accurate focus. There were constant back and front focus issues as soon as I left the calibrated central focus point.

Unfortunately, the USB dock cannot help with any of that and I don’t have time to try and send my main camera body and this lens to the manufacturer to calibrate the two together. This isn’t a dig at Sigma per se, as I do truly love my 60-600 Sport and 70-200 Sport, but their Art line has not proved to be as great as I’d hoped and needs a lot more done in the QC department, unfortunately.

I shoot Nikon D850 and been Pro for decades, mostly weddings and portraits. I hav lots of great glass, all nikon,including 20mm-50mm and 85mm Nikkor, as well as 70-200mm VR Zoom. Was in need of a great Nikon 35mm lens.

considered the Nikkor F/2 as well as 28mm F/2. 8. Then picked up the Sigma 35mm F/1. 4 Art. WOW, a wee bit heavy but amazing image quality and so sharp! Its truly a great lens. very sharp, great colors, and at $699 a bargain! HIGHLY RECCOMEND it to all who want really good build quality and stunning sharpness.

on a side NOTE, salesman gave me in the bag a CANON mount sigma lens NOT a Nikon even though he knew well I was shooting a Nikon, had to take 1 hour subway back to store to sort out issue. BH took care of it fortunately.

For some background, I generally do not mind lens price tags like this (I paid $1,500) if the performance is outstanding and the rendering is beautiful. For the latter, the rendering is the reason to buy this lens.

The look of a moderately wide angle combined with the 1. 2 aperture is really a unique look. Fortunately, the lens is sharp at the point of focus whether at close distance or far and whether you are focusing at the center of the frame or mid-frame.

If you focus toward the edges it can help to stop down a bit. The bokeh is really appealing: not too busy unlike other fast 35s and I personally really like the vignette it produces. As for negatives, there are a few.

I don’t mind the size given it’s a 1. 2 with autofocus, but I expected more symmetric distortion and field curvature. The distortion is a bit funny in that the correction affects one side of the image more than the other.

It’s not a simple barrel in the middle and that can make compositions on flat surfaces more challenging. The big issue I have found is the field curvature and in summary, the lens’ performance isn’t a harmonic improvement when stopping down.

Instead I find it is best at either 1. 2 or smaller than f/4. For some reason the field seems relatively flat at 1. 2, but from 1. 4 to f/4 (or so) and in I can’t get sharpness on a flat plane if I focus at the center at infinity.

Using an off-center mid-field focus point is better as is focusing at a close distance where the curvature seems to affect the plane of sharpness less. The final issue is autofocus in that in single AF it can lock focus then refocus again on its own.

I’m not sure how that happens but also haven’t seen a firmware update.

I just finished using this lens for a week on a short film video shoot. I really loved the quality of the shots, and despite the weight, I was still able to balance and use it in a Robin-S. My only issue is the focus-by-wire they put into this lens instead of mechanical focus.

That made it almost impossible to manual focus a moving subject since the speed at which you move the focus ring will change how fast the focus changes. Because of this you cannot do consistent focus pulls.

That said, it did work great with touchscreen focus pulls, but when I needed to focus on someone walking away, manually focusing was very difficult (although I did have pretty good success with people walking towards the camera with letting the autofocus face detection do the work for me.

I also used the Sigma ART 50mm f/1. 4 and it was WAY easier to manually focus and set up focus pulls ahead of time because of the mechanical focus system. Just something to keep in mind for video shooters if you are looking at this lens over the 35mm f/1.

I love this lens. Ibwas looking for a lens to start some portrait photography and after some research decided on this lens. Eventhough it is a 35mm, on an APSC camera like my A6400, the focal length will be closer to 50mm (full frame).

The lense lets in plenty of ligh for daytime indoor pictures and is great for outdoor portraits as well. If you’re looking for more scenic shots, then consider an 18mm lense. Build quality is superb, and pictures are sharp.

The lense is the perfect size for a grab and go on the fly session which is what I tend to use it for. And portraits of my young toddler.

I’m just an amateur, but I wanted to see what other lenses offer besides what came with my kit. After reading reviews, I landed on this one. The shots are beautiful. This lens very easily creates a bokeh effect, where my other lenses struggle to do so.

It’s a tighter shot, not as wide as the zoomable kit lens. But it’s more crisp and clear than the kit lens. It can also focus faster than the kit lens. On a recent trip to Disney World, I used both to great effect.

For wider shots, I used the kit lens since this prime lens has a more narrow view. But when taking pictures of friends/family, I swapped to this one and got great shots every time. I’m just an amateur, but I’d recommend using both for different reasons.

It can be tougher at a convention. This lens is great for portrait or half-body shots. But often, I want to see the whole body, including shoes, for great cosplay. This lens requires standing farther back to get the whole person, so for a con, I stuck to the kit lens which has a wider angle (since the further back I go, the more people walk in-between).

But when it’s a group shot and I’m already further back, or in a hallway with breathing room, this lens takes the cake and makes every shot look amazing!.

Premises, could have been a sample issue and I use it with a TZE adapter on a Nikon Z so no profile automatically applied, the lens it’s necked. I have compared it with the sony 16-34 f4 and the sigma 14-24 f2.

8 DG DN (the new one). With the adapter AF worked well so i did my usual tests shots. Remember, no lens profile applied because i work with a Nikon body through an adapter. With my great surprise the 16-35 GM at f4 has more vignetting and field curvature than the 16-35 f4 at 4.

Nothing that could not be corrected but. in addition my sample was slightly decentered. For a 2K lens. i decided it was not acceptable and i returned it. Compared with the sigma and the sigma has much less field curvature and vignetting than the Sony GM and it’s centered.

And it’s cheaper. It’s a touch less sharp than the sony in the center but sharper as you move out from the center (maybe because of the field curvature).

This was the lens that got me interested to switch to sony from nikon as nikon did not have a 16-35 2. 8. That focal range is so versatile and useful for landscape and even some event photography as there are many times where there is ls limited range to move back to forward.

The 2. 8 aperture, 82mm filter thread, weather sealing and awesome optics performance were the main reasons to go with this. Plus I wanted a proper sony native lens for my landscape work as I got tired of lunging around custom 150mm filter systems with my sigma 14-24 2.

8 art on my nikon d810. This lens is MUCH lighter than I anticipated and a huge relief coming from much heavier DSLR lenses. It’s performance easily competes with most primes in it’s focal range. I prefer the GM lens after having tested a few other options; tamron 17-28 2.

8 (felt too cheap, corner performance lacked even stopped down and I really didn’t want to buy filters in different sizes + 17-28 feel a bit too limiting), zeiss batis 18 2. 8 (much rather have a zoom), samyang 18 2.

8 (again, rather have a zoom and it has no weather sealing, feels cheap). This lens is a real gem for landscape photographers and is highly praised for good reasons. I still am mainly more a prime shooter so I will have other primes in it’s focal range most likely over time but still will always prefer this first because it’s so versatile.

Highly recommended!.

A bit of background: I was on the Canon Eos system for 3 decades prior to buying my first Sony (A7R3) at the end of 2017. I have used adapted Eos lenses using the Metabones & Sigma MC11 adapters. I also adapt a wide range of old ‘classic’ lenses to the Sony camera too.

I only bought one Sony native lens, GM85, when I bought the A7R3 as I wanted to have one native lens so I can better judge the camera by & compare to my adapted lenses, I went for the GM85 because its a portrait lens & the A7R3 has eye AF – it would be rude not to have gone for a portrait lens! At the end of 2019 I added the G200-600, which was on a ‘double sale’.

At the very end of 2020 I added the GM24 having deliberated for a long time between it & the 20 1. 8. A focal length of 24mm on full frame/35mm film has always been a strong preference for me photographically, so it got the nod over the 20mm, I purchased when it was also on a ‘double sale’.

I am biased toward Landscape type of photography, but shoot a bit of everything. I tell you the above to help frame my following comments about the 20mm. Why did I get the 20mm when i had the 24mm? Well, I think there were three ‘drivers’ for me.

I added an A7S3 in the first half of 2021 (separate story), & amongst other things, used it for a vlogging camera when I was out shooting, I obviously used the GM24 for this, but it felt a little too tight when at arms length, especially when using image stablisation which crops in a little.

Second, I’ve also shot the night sky alot over the past decade, with motorised telescopes & cooled mono CCD’s etc – full astro imaging rigs. These are computer controlled & once setup & going I then leave them running all night & then get out camera & wide angle lens to shoot nightscapes, both the 20 & 24 are good for this, but the 20 gives a more sky, so arguably is the better option.

Thirdly & finally, the G20/1. 8 was on a double sale for a few weeks in the summer of 2021 – that was the tipping point for me in a ‘now or never’ kind of way. The G20/1. 8 is perfect on the A7S3 for a vlogging lens, its quite light & a little more compact than the GM24.

I also see that I will use it for hiking – both for vlogging the trip & also doubling up as a light weight wide angle landscape lens, & if/when those hikes include an overnight camp, then for nightscape/astro use too.

If I am not vlogging, or not needing to hike light, then I would probably take the GM24 as it would be my preference for landscape use. Both a great lenses optically I think, the GM24 does feel slightly better in the hand, more solid/substantial, but the G20 being lighter & feeling ‘less solid’ as a result is both a pro & a con.

Just waiting for the Sony 14/1. 8 to be on double sale now ;-).

Contrast is incredible. almost best viewed on HDR monitor. Sharpness is astounding. never counted so many eyelashes. Miraculously light and compact-this can’t be understated, as this makes my A7rIIIa light and portable with amazing, no compromise, image quality.

At the same time, I don’t want to overstate the compactness because I would absolutely still buy this lens if it was a pound heavier for IQ alone. It’s been a while since a lens made me this profoundly satisfied.

Really scratches the itch!!!.

I absolutely love this lens. Super lightweight, compact and a joy to use. The sharpness is excellent edge to edge and focusing silent. I shoot weddings, and was missing this focal length as I have the 24mm 1.

4 GM and 55mm 1. 8 in this focal length area. I found the 24mm a little wide for family formals and the 55mm too to tight. This lens is perfect for the job and many other types of subjects. I’m also getting into video and having done a few test shoots it’s fast becoming the lens I’ll keep on my A7R4 for the job.

Fast AF, silent and so lightweight. Love it!.

This lens is absolutely fantastic. The colours, contrast, and overall image quality is absolutely superb, even whilst at f1. 8. I originally sold this lens to get a 35mm compact camera, and almost immediately regretted it.

I bought this lens again, and have loved it ever since. Clients love the images it produces, I love the size and functionality of the lens, and what’s best? It’s a fraction of the price of the 35mm g-master.

If you are umming and arring over which one to get, definitely choose this one.

Light, small, impressively sharp wide-angle prime lens that delivers contrasty, crisp detail across the frame even wide open, with a super smooth bokeh. Good close focus performance, extremely fast to focus, negligible distortion Linear focus response / no breathing.

On the waiting of this lens I went through Minolta md 35 1. 8, voigtlander 40 1. 4 and 1. 2 and Ultron 35 1. 7. So When this one was out there I jump into it. Impressive sharpness at 1. 8 already with very very good corners, a smooth blur background and the most important, beautiful rendering.

As I told you I did use very nice glass before this one and I will choose the sony over the others, ok, yes, if one day Voigtlander nokton 40 mm 1. 2 come out with an af version I will definitely trade the sony :).

But that is very unlikely to happen. I also did considere the distagon 1. 4 but as sone reviews out there show (mManny Ortiz for ex), is not as sharp as the 1. 8, the blur is smoother yes. but The size and weight was also into consideration over the distagon 1.

I am so glad I brought this lens. It is well built and the image quality is amazing as expected from a Sony Lens. I had a third party 35mm which I was not happy with so I bought this and the difference is like night and day.

I mainly use it for video work. Used it for some youtube work and my wife’s cooking channel and she is also happy with the quality this lens has brought. The focus hold button and auto to manual switch are some nice features.

Photography has been excellent as well with the images being sharp. Bokeh is vry nice as well.

I enjoy using manual lenses on my Fuji cameras, and this one’s a bargain. At this price point, I can hardly ask for more. I had previously used the 7Artisans 35mm f0. 95 lens, which I found too bulky and heavy, plus more than double the price.

This lens fits what I needed just right. It feels solidly built without being overly heavy, considering it’s metal and glass. It mounts and balances well on the X-T2, even better than the kit 18-55, which is mostly plastic.

The focus ring is smooth and precise and I don’t mind the aperture ring being clickless, since the aperture data isn’t transmitted to the camera anyway. Image quality is better than expected for the price.

At less than a sixth of the price of Fuji’s own 35mm f1. 4, I’d say it offers 90% of the image quality. Corner sharpness isn’t as good wide-open and of course it doesn’t Autofocus, but for non pixel-peepers like myself, this is hardly worth spending $500+ more.

My one complaint is the hood doesn’t clip or screw on, and simply falls off if turned upside down. I picked up a replacement separately. I’d highly recommend this to anyone looking for an inexpensive, manual-focus standard lens.

Using it has been great fun so far.

I don’t typically write reviews but here I am. Good picture for the price. However, I wouldn’t consider this the safest or most durable HDTV I’ve had based on my personal experience with it. Mines went out shy of the 3 1/2 year mark and most of those hours were spent with the picture itself turned off listening to music.

Had I not been awake I could have possibly had a fire as the screen got so hot it started melting the picture frame!.

I bought this a year ago and it is the most power saving TV available. The picture is better than any other Television also and can be used for smart tv with youtube and Netflix and use off it wifi as it has its own inbuilt modem.

I believe its only the need to upgrade the settings that I believe Bravia and Sony do anyway which will enable it to be a great television for at least another few years in what Sony as clearly still the best environmental and quality picture available still on the market and the mid range price for the highest quality product is what I like in my Sony I purchased.

Thank you Sony good work I recommend buying this for anyone wanting this power saving picture perfect sound perfect device. I am thrilled with my purchase I only wish it was not so much to be it should be as fast a s the fastest computer though it should happen soon in the future as no other televisions or smart televisions or computers are as fast as they technically should be with technology so I see this as the end of the high end style of electronics as to being until there’s a donminance in someother part to include in a television as this is a computer screen monitor also when it wants to be when I allow it to be as having no problem there either perfect.

The TV had a beautiful picture with great color. I had an xfinity cable man set it up for me. It worked for all of 47 minutes then went black. I have not been able to turn the TV on even after unplugging the power cord and pushing the middle of the three buttons below and partially behind the TV.

The buttons are difficult to find and because they are black with black signs on them they are next to impossible to read even with a helper lifting the set up for me.

This is my second DT16-105. The first lasted 8 years. The effective zoom (~24-160 35 mm equivalent) is extremely useful. I only carry the one lens on trips. Durable ? It came tumbling down a shale hill in 2011 (I broke some ribs).

In 2015, it hit the ground hard in a fall where I broke my foot. The lens took all the impact. It so badly distorted the frame of the UV filter it was impossible to remove. It was dropped from hip height in 2016.

No repairs were ever required, it kept on working. It’s my “adventure” camera/lens combo and has been on some pretty rough trips. Desert, sand, salt, rock climbing, tropical rains and hard 4wdriving.

Clarity and sharpness ? I also own a Canon 5D and pro lens. It’s only the occasional shot where you can say that combo is superior. Downside, it’s not the brightest lens and the biggest problem, they don’t make them anymore.

After 8 years of abuse, the auto focus drive gear failed (but I still used it in manual !). Perfect size and weight in combination with the mid size Sony Alpha’s for adventurous photographers.

Outstanding build & image quality, this spends much of its time on my A99. As a pro commercial photographer the weather sealing is a welcomed addition too. This is a premium, quality piece of glass with a price tag to match – However, as i have found with all my other Zeiss lenses, its a price tag worth paying for.

For me however there are 2 flaws: Firstly, is the supplied plastic lens hood!? – All the the other Alpha mount Zeiss lenses have high quality metal lens hoods, which not only carry that Zeiss quality to the finest detail, but also means they are more durable.

Secondly, and although this may seem trivial, there is no leather pouch with the lens, like like is supplied with the other 5 Zeiss and Sony G lenses?? When paying top prices, its these little details that make the difference.

The Sony SAL-35F14G Alpha Mount Wide Angle lens gives a closer focal point for the ILCA-99Mii 42Mp alpha camera with its 4K movie function and iA intellegent autofocus returns to the age of point and shoot cameras.

A roll around focus is possible with this lens’ depth of focus as sensors can be set for different parts of the field of view. Bordering on a medium format picture resolution, the camera and lens combo is competitive with Mamiya, Phase One, Hasselblad & studio setups.

Great deal and the lens seems to work great. I haven’t had the chance to test it completely for sharpness, but its auto focus is completely silent. Since we are using it for videoing a church service this perfect.

It captures the full stage when shooting in 4k and allows us to punch in very sharp when we stream in 1080p. In regard to the bundle, the bag is excellent and big. I don’t think I’d mount anything to the tripod other than maybe a go pro or small light.

Cleaning kit is good. The memory card is decent, but probably not fast enough for high-bit-rate 4k recording. It should handle lower bit-rates just fine though.

Im used to using telephoto style lenses and this small compact lens won me over to Sonys native line of wide-angle lenses. 28mm feels like the perfect travel lens. Great for self-portraits, video, and adding context, environment, and storytelling to an image or video.

The f2 aperture is excellent for semi-lowlight areas. Its sharp wide open and adds a subtle smooth and pleasing bokeh to the background of a subject near the lens. The price is great too for the features offered.

It does not have a side button traditionally found on some Sony lenses. Its simple design includes a focus ring and thats it. The lens hood is helpful in some instances, but not necessary in most. The auto-focus speed, depending on your camera’s custom settings and speed may vary, on mine its incredibly fast.

Almost instant in many use cases as Im using (AF-C) continuous focus, on a Sony ILCE-7RM2 (A7RII) with focus speed set to normal or fast for photos and slow for video. Love this little lens! Here are a few photos to see bokeh and minimum focusing distance.

Macro lenses are sharp by design. They usually are able to focus closer to the subject then a regular lens. Depth of field is critical, sometimes the autofocus system of the camera hunts or goes in or out of focus.

Sony purchased Minoltas Photo division some years ago and continued to develop and improve some products. This 50mm f2. 8 Macro is almost identical to Minoltas last version using the old focus drive.

The older Minolta lens is a better buy if you can find one. Nice colors as usual and good build.
