20 Best 5 Gallon Diesel Can (2022 Updated)

Bought this to haul fuel for our loader tractor, a 55 HP Massey Ferguson with the fuel cap 5 feet off the ground. The only thing I can say is that the California Air Resources Board must really like things that spill fuel all over the place and are next to impossible to use.

The first experience with fuel spillage was just filling the can at the gas station — The strainers that are inserted into the can spewed the fuel back out onto the ground unless one has the fuel dispenser just barely pumping fuel.

Using the full container to fuel the tractor was even more entertaining. As mentioned, our fuel cap is 5 feet off the ground, and about 2 feet in from the loader and other support structures. So the instructions about “use thumb on green button to remove pressure” and the “two fingers here” instruction for the dispenser were bad enough, but all of the fuel seeping around the cap while trying to do that little ritual 5 feet off the ground made that approach to using this a non-starter.

I wound up just getting a funnel and taking off the cap after doing some minor surgery on it to remove the adult-proof cap lock mechanism. Even then, the lack of a vent hole caused some amount of spillage as the can had to suck in air to allow fuel to be removed.

Problem is, there don’t seem to be any real alternatives to these fuel spilling, fuel seeping, impossible to use containers.

Nice can. Easy ‘fast’ consistent delivery of fuel. Cap/delivery mechanism sturdy. Some similar from other providers come off easily. Not this can. Only improvement would be side/back handhold. Currently needs a resting ledge to push button and hold can with other hand.

Otherwise a five star can.

I like these cans a lot. While they meet federal standards for leakage and vapor control; they do it in a way that makes the use of the can easier. Other types of can actually fail often, and make using the cans almost impossible.

We have diesel, kerosene, and gasoline fueled equipment and I like that these are available in red and yellow so they can be identified as to fuel content at a glance. Easy to lift, easy to fill and easy to pour, these are great.

My only complaint is they are a bit pricy.

Since the government years ago instituted all kinds of different “safety” rules on fuel cans they have actually gotten unsafe to use with frequent spills from all of the “spill proof” different containers out there created to meet the government regulations.

This is the first can I have found in the last 15+ years that actually works safely and efficiently. These are more expensive but definitely worth the price. Living in a hurricane zone for the first time in our lives we found ourselves wholly unprepared.

We purchased 2 five gallon gas cans and 2 five gallon diesel cans and these work flawlessly and SAFELY. I will definitely be purchasing more and getting rid of any of the other older cans that leak and spill when using them.

If I could rate this 6 stars out of five I would.

I always had trouble filling up equipment with traditional gas cans when they are full and heavy. I would either tip it down too early and spill around the opening, miss the opening when trying to pour from a position above, or spray gas when I tipped the can back up at the end.

It sounds like a bad infomercial but it happens to everyone. I bought this SureCan Fuel Can last spring I haven’t wasted a drop of fuel since. I can put the spout in the opening before I even start pouring the fuel.

The trigger allows you to adjust the flow so you can slow down as it gets closer to full. Plus, you can stand upright while filling equipment on the ground which is nice when the can is full and heavy.

Well made fuel can built so you can dispense fuel without spilling any. Shutoff valve works positively and the size of the dispensing tube is appropriate for small engine fuel tanks. Fuel can is thick and tough to take normal wear and tear.

Fuel caps tighten securely to allow spill free transporting in a vehicle interior cabin. Price is about 20% too high or I would rate it a good value. All in all a great fuel can.

I have (4)JUSTRITE cans of various sizes that I have purchased on zoro. com over the years. I feel these cans are very safe and I feel confident on the rare occasion that I have to take fuel somewhere or even going to fill up the cans at the gas station in order to do yard work.

For me, I do not take chances with flammable liquids, it only takes a very slight error to be life-changing/ending. I always take care to move the cans outside and squeeze the handle slowly in order to let pressure out (especially on hot days).

For me, I was taught to always place the can on concrete and keep one hand on the can that’s being filled and one hand on the gas dispensing nozzle. This is how I was taught to dispense fuel in order to maintain proper grounding.

These types of cans have a stainless steel flame arrestor, which is important. I was also taught to never fill a can more than 95% but during hot times of the year, 90% or less. I keep my cans in a flammable cabinet that is sitting on concrete and is bolted to the wall.

Everything I said here may seem a little much to some, but there are many people that do not know better. I would encourage anyone and everyone to take a few minutes and lookup safety considerations with fuel and consider how you are transporting and storing your fuel.

I have seen people that have been terribly injured from burns and burns are very difficult to manage. infection and hyperthermia are brutal. Aside from an injury or death, don’t risk destroying your property.

Modern day plastic gas cans are a disaster and we all know it. The ones from 30 years ago weren’t anything to brag about either. The metal ones were marginally better. This is a different animal all together.

No need to remove a cap to fill it. No need to remove a cap to pour from it. It doesn’t vent fumes in direct sun or a metal trailer or collapse in the cold. UV proof. It’s a self extinguishing safety can.

Takes 10% of the time to empty that the plastic ones do because of segregated vent and large pour spout. Easy to use with zero spilling. Zero! Stable center of gravity. I feel comfortable leaving it in the garage.

I believe the service life will be indefinite. I think plastic tanks are false economy. Ease of operation for everyday user justifies the premium price over all other tanks. Longevity justifies the premium price over all plastic tanks.

This Justrite 1 gallon 7210120 type II safety gas can is the best safety gas can I have used so far. I like the flexible spout and the fact that it is very hard to tip over. Just all around better than the non safety plastic ones.

While it cost 2 to 3 times what a non safety plastic can costs, it handles direct sun, does not tip over, is highly puncture resistant, and has a flame arrestor. The pouring mechanism is sturdy, pours quickly, and is very easy to use without all of the finicky fiddly bits that constrict the flow and are difficult to use.

I also have the same justrite 5 gallon cans in red for gas and yellow for diesel. One of the best investments I have made.

What can I say about this fuel can? It’s bright yellow and it holds the diesel I need for my tractor. 20L is a decent size, not too heavy to lift and hold while topping up the tank. Of course my tank is about 38L so I need 2 of them.

I never let the tank get below 1/2 full as ther4e may be times I need to use the tractor and I don’t want to be caught lacking fuel. The venting seems to work well enough, just remember to have the vent tube at the top when you are pouring.

They’re a better deal when on sale, and if you can catch a sale as well as extra bonus coupons it’s even better. I think every farmer, contractor, construction company, landscaper and those that want to be any of the above have at least a couple of these on hand and it’s because they are basic, simple and do the job they were made for.

It is a fuel can, designed to hold diesel. It works & doesn’t leak – not sure that performing its intended function warrants 5 stars though. there isn’t really anything exceptional about this type of product.

The service in the store where I bought it (couldn’t find the product initially as didn’t know where it would be & I was shown to the location by staff) was exceptional though.

Ruggedly built and good design features. I bought the “dumpy” model as I can fit it in my cockpit locker. It’s also lashable on deck. I can rest easy knowing no diesel’s going to leak!

I bought the yellow, plastic F-15 spout that attaches to it. Works fine. Some fuel, like a teaspoon, did leak from somewhere during pouring of about 2. 5 gallons into a small tank. I found no real trouble holding the spring-loaded cap open while pouring.

Had to use the lowest nozzle pressure at the gas pump when filling this tank and be ready and quick to cut ‘er off when it gets to full. 4. 5 gallons by the pump meter seemed full enough. So it must hold just barely 5 gallons.

Very light when empty. about 35 lbs when full. that’s due to the weight of 5 gallons of diesel. Not very likely to tip over. Plenty strong enough, not ‘tinny’.

It isn’t easy to find good steel fuel cans these days. This one is well made, much easier to use than the plastic government mandated “safety” cans which are practically worthless. This does have a spring loaded spout which requires holding it open to pour fuel, provides safety without impairing use of the can.

I bought the yellow can for diesel to avoid misfueling my tractor. I highly recommend this can.

An Eagle safety can for the price of a plastic container? Close. I don’t know who designs the current crop of fuel containers. How “they” think they/we are protecting the environment with the supposedly improved new generation of containers that are so spill inducing? Enter these.

Simple. OK, you really need a funnel, but I prefer to filter my fuel through a Mr Funnel to keep out the water. (“They” improved the gasoline, too, by adding alcohol. ) This is for diesel, but I filter that, too.

One other thing, squirrels have attacked my plastic spouts, too. No plastic here.

Sturdy can that won’t accidently tip over makes for easy and safe transport. Easy to transfer fuel without spilling. Comfortable handle, easy to control the tilt while filling. When you let go of the handle the can is closed, no cap to get dirty or lose.

Attached funnel is like the icing on the cake. They cost more than the plastic cans but as you can tell I am very pleased with my purchase of 4 cans.

This Eagle gas can is is the perfect solution to all the post-functioning gasoline cans of today. Stop trying to find a gas can at the home/hardware store that actually pours and stores gas! They are gone.

Thanks to Obama, the EPA and CARB, those days are over. Fortunately, Eagle Manufacturing has come up with a alternative that still pours and stores, but somehow also satisfies the “Nanny State,†too.

I have tried other cans to use to fill equipment like a skid steer or my truck. I hate the kind of cans that have the little safety piece that you have to make push in against the opening you are filling.

I just end up frustrated and with diesel all over me. These cans are easy to use, do not leak when using, and a clean way to refuel.

Thankfully a gas can is a rare purchase. So rare for me that technology has changed since I bought my last one. I’ve always had the spouted type of gas can. I wasn’t even sure how to use this one until I bought it and used it.

This has a push button feature where it safely vents gas fumes. One issue I have is that you have to hold that button in while pouring – unless there’s a shortcut I’m not aware of. There’s a handle on the backside of the container so you can adjust your grip while pouring from a full can.

Another thing I would like is for a longer spout. It would help for someone like me who has back trouble. It’s hard to suspend the container while pouring when the fan is full. If the spout was a bit longer, it would help weaklings like me.

I recommend this container.

I picked up the 5 gallon NO-SPILL can and I was actually shocked by how easy it works ! Put in the car and went and filled it up. I took the time to look at the cap and saw the strainer. Knowing beforehand how well those back up when trying to fill the tank, I pulled it and topped it off.

Because of the weight, I transferred 2 1/2 gallons to my smaller filling can. the push botton control worked as advertised ! No spills, no leaks and very little fumes ! This can is money wells spent as far as I’m concerned !.

In general, I detest the new EPA-mandated gas cans. I had one in the past I liked for a while. that ended up leaking, which is why I ditched it for this one. This one is better than any others I’ve seen as of late.

Why? It is easy to control, fast flow, and has an optional extension end available if you need to use it. Seals nicely when not in use, and easy to figure out and get going without making a mess like some others.

Nice and sturdy design as well.

I have no idea how this is getting such good reviews. I purchased two of them. The first one leaked immediately. I thought it was just a bad unit and returned it to ACE. I kept the second unit. I think I’ve filled it three times.

It now leaks when you use the fill spout. I truly MISS the old metal gas cans. They lasted for 50 years, and never leaked.

Bought 2 5 gallon cans a couple months ago and filled it maybe 3 times. Walked into my garage this morning to a mess, with gas everywhere. I don’t trust this product. If it leaks, it is a disaster because it will drain while sitting upright.

Best gas can on the market. I have four. Doesn’t leak a drop. Only negative. Wish the cap had a safety lanyard as I use for my boat and now have to see if I can purchase a replacement cap. Without a doubt best gas can I’ve ever used.

Durable plastic can, easy to fill at the gas pump with the screw on lid. Very easy to use pull out nozzle to fill yard machines with fuel. Economical because you are not losing gas by pouring it all over your intended equipment due to an unweidly and/or difficult to handle spout.

Should’ve bought this a long time ago. The flip spout is con isn’t and easy during fill ups. And the no spill is actually no spill! I was able to fill up lawn mowers and generators with ease with the swivel spout.

I am going to buy two more. Don’t think this is the gas can to get.

Best non-metal gas can I’ve used. I used this for a 14 day road trip and had minimal issues.

It’s a fuel can. Holds fuel well, but the nozzle has a “feature” that requires some force to depress to allow the fuel to flow. This is nice in that it prevents spillage when you’re first putting the nozzle in the tank.

HOWEVER, you have to apply same-said force to the nozzle, BUT if you let the entire 30 pounds sit on the nozzle, the plastic nozzle will deform and cause the gasket on the flange to curl around, thereby NEGATING the effectiveness of the seal, resulting in fuel leaking down the car.

The ONLY way to prevent this is to offset the weight of the can by about 20 to 25 pounds while fueling, that is, you have to HOLD the can up WHILE the fuel is draining into the vehicle tank. If you can deadlift 30 pounds and hold it for a few minutes, great.

My friend was stranded 20 miles from a fuel station due to a malfunction in the fuel gauge on her new pickup. I bought this fuel can so I could haul diesel fuel to her. We could not pour the fuel into the tank because the fuel can spout was too short.

Also, the spout safety closure was not positioned correctly to keep the spout open. Another friend brought a separate funnel and we had to insert it into the tank and pour the diesel in using the funnel.

This fuel can should come with another type of spout or a separate funnel. The employees at Autozone were very helpful.

It would be good for an emergency but I would not rely on it for repeated use. It got the job done but it was a little hard to hold it up without handles. Five gallons of diesel is pretty heavy and you have to hold it up chest high to fill my vehicle.

Also, it would not drain completely. I do like the fact that it won’t drain until you engage the valve but I worry about breaking off the plastic trigger.

Spout sealing disc is smaller than the hole in can. there were 2 loose discs that had fallen into the can and the one on the spout fell in when I unscrewed the spout. Not at all effective or useful for sealing purposes.

The spout pouring function is clumsy, and the can could use a retrofit upgrade to something that works better. Additionally needs an airvent to pour consistently.

Ordered because it has the 2nd handle on the spine. Forgot to be sure it had a vent. I’ll drill & plug my own. I’m going to order an old school spout that actually pours because this can comes with one of the myriad new innovative spouts that won’t pour.

Containers structure and molded integrated handles appears sturdy for its intended function. Also with its separate breather tube discharging fuel into fuel tank was fairly quick and not like some other fuel cans I’ve used.

As with so many cheap plastic fuel cans, you cannot tighten the nut holding the pour spout enough to keep it from leaking. I tried reassembling/reinstall 3 times but the leak continued. The mating parts seem to be smooth enough but I suspect the gasket is unsuitable.

The durometer (hardness) of the material is too hard. Basically, it cannot be compressed enough to provide a good seal between the hard plastic pour spout, the hard plastic nut, and the threaded connection molded into the can.

I’m 62 years old and these are absolutely the best gas cans I’ve ever used. I purchased one a couple of years ago, and even though I have several other brands that are perfectly fine, I’ve replaced all of them with Fuelworx.

My only complaint is that they’re rather expensive, but the first time you use one, you won’t regret spending twice as much as cheaper brands. No more glugging, aerating, or holding the can at odd angles for long periods of time.

I’ve bought three of these gas cans and they are the best I’ve found with the safety features. Flip it up hit the air vent and fill up your tank in no time. I struggled with the cost at first but after spending the money it’s totally worth it.

You’ll save money, with these gas prices by getting gas in the tank and not dripping an spilling gas like other cans.

I needed to carry extra fuel for my trip. I selected this can because of the handle. I am not sure I can get all the fuel from the can to the truck because the handle gets in the way. Also the safety spout is difficult to use.

I had to go to utube to get instructions. I may get a basic nozzle if I get around to to.

I was able to fill my tractor without spilling any diesel. The red tab on the spout, which releases the opening mechanism, was a little hard to press in the first time. After that it has been fine. Just insert the spout into the tank with the black tab on the spout resting on the lip of the tank, press on the red tab, and let the weight of the can slide the opening mechanism upwards towards the can.

Fuel then flows at a reasonably quick rate.

These are great cans. I have had the metal gas cans for a long time and they still look brand new. Got the diesel cans knowing they’d be the same way. I don’t mess with the plastic cans as my Husband, Dad, and Brother’s can be rough on things skip the crushed, hole poked, white crease line, slow flow safety funnel plastic cans and invest in some metal ones.

Love the safty cans made by Eagle. durable and dependable. Did not like that the diesel can was more than the gas can sewing that they are the same in every way except in color. It is high way robbery.

It’s a fuel can. Works a lot better that the plastic “no spill” cans. It you can’t pour fuel without making a mess let the ones who can do it

Works great and no drips if you remember to move the can to its side some so it can drain out. Showed others and they like it and would get it again. Seems a little high for price but worth it. Use on a Kubota and keeps it clean.

Only one thing I would prefer for the diesel tank. A bigger pour spout for more flow. Gas variety cans are perfect as they are.

This Midwest gas can is great, but the spout is going to get someone hurt! In all of my 64 years, I’ve never seen this level of engineering stupidity! Have your attorney on speed dial, because this product is one of the most negligent designs I’ve ever seen! Don’t buy any of these products that are using this type of spout.

Great steel gas can. Heavy duty. I will buy again.

Decent container BUT the moulding burrs around the neck initially caused a leak. Do check the neck for any leftover bits of plastic on yours and do yourself a favour by removing them before you fill it.

It’s a lot harder once it’s full of diesel. Leave the burrs on and the cap seal will not save you. I was pleased it was made by a British company but disappointed with this fundamentally important and safey critical (after all, diesel is combustible) bit of finishing.

Once de-burred it was fine. As far as recommendations go, this seems to be a common flaw with a lot of these containers.

I’ve had similar fuel cans before but, Toolstation beats them with this one. The can is sturdy and the filling nozzle is a decent length for my van. It gets 5 stars from me.

I had to return the item since the stock photo used showed that it included a funnel when it didn’t. There was no description of the contents of the box so it lead me to believe that it was included.

This product would have been great if it had been labeled correctly on the walmart site and a correct picture was used. The picture used only misleads customers into thinking that they are buying a safety can with a funnel when they are not.

I bought 20 of those. 5 of them gasket leaks. Often the gas flows out when you handle it. Look carefully the gasket is incomplete, misplaced or damaged. I am looking for the gasket so I can repair them.

This is stand out quality for a plastic jerry can. Why, because the breather actually works and is safe, the filler thread is precise. The only issue for some is that the fuel filler nozzle won’t work on some Euro diesels as it is too small a diameter to open the safety flap on the car filler.

but that is also the case for most other cans. A great product.

Nozzle doesn’t reach far enough down inside tank. I get a fuel kick back when I use the fuel can. A small indentation at the bottom of the leading edge would also provide more grip while using the fuel can.
