20 Best Ammonia Free Hair Dyes (2022 Updated)

My hairdresser uses this, but I am not sure the exact shade my hair is tinted dark brown, but I recall him asking the assistant to mix more than one Inoa colour so I bought this 3 and the shade 2, plus the peroxide developer massive 1L bottle back in May, but I was reluctant to use it in case I didnt get it right it didnt cover my white roots properly.

Important to know that unlike the usual brands of hair colour you can buy from a chemist or supermarket this is just a tube of colour. You need to buy the Inoa developer peroxide separately and it needs to be the strength required for your colour i.

e. for dark hair It is 20. After waiting for a long time my roots were c. 3 long and pearly, blinding white I finally decided to colour my own hair today, as I couldnt look in the mirror anymore, but I am still not confident enough going out Postlockdown and coming in close contact with people in a salon.

Messy and time consuming as per brilliant advice from a fellow Perfumes of London shopper, best use a kitchen scales to weigh 60g of developer peroxide once you have squeezed the 60g tube of colour or half of each tube, as I did into a bowl the result was salonlike and my hair is back to normal It has freed me from having to wear a wide Lycra band to cover my badgerlike roots during video calls or going for walks.

My husband keeps saying that I look 10 years younger bless. I should have done it a long time ago prepandemic, I had my roots done every three weeks, but I hadnt been to a hairdresser since 12 March until doing the colour myself today.

I have now ordered a couple more tubes, for when those pesky roots start showing up again and I dont feel like having to wear a mask to have my hair done. The advice from fellow Perfumes of London shoppers on what strength peroxide developer to buy and the weighing of the colour developer right proportions was brilliant and invaluable.

Excellent product. I purchased a 6. 1 ash blonde for a brown hair effect. Its sold as a blonde but IS NOT A BLONDE you mix this to the exact same amount of activator. so 50 to 50 of each. mix well and leave it is quite an ash colour, which is perfect, as so many browns are orange, but note that does depend on what its going over if you have orange issues use a blue shampoo to accompany.

I left my colour on for 25 minutes not the 40 recommended. This was long enough to colour any small greay areas, and make the hair go medium brown. I find if its left on for 40 it can go black but my hair is pourous I have purchased this colour many times with the 20 activator and would buy again.

Great product. I have been buying it for more than an year from Perfumes of London. Its always good. Colour lasts. Hair looks shiny. No extra greying. Though my hair has grown thinner but cant say its due to hair colour or other reasons.

Overall great product from loreal and excellent service by Perfumes of London.

This is the color line my salon uses. I love the Demi permanent line for its gentleness, but I love the permanent line for its staying power. The colors are beautiful, work well with my darker natural tones, which now have significant streaks of white.

Either line covers my white hair and helps me live in denial a little longer 😉.

I’ve been using this color for several months now after testing it at my hairdresser’s. I’m a total fan! Brilliant, good hold, beautiful finish. The only downside is that the color is darker than indicated on the package (I am a dark brunette and use light brown for my roots).

I like this product. So far no adverse reaction to my scalp or skin. However, I wish the box would contain the hair conditioner from the same company. I seem to look for some other conditioner after coloring my hair.

I’ve used several hair coloring products in my life. I haven’t used anything in the past few years. I read the directions twice before beginning and used a timer. Well, my hair broke off where I applied it! I am NOT a happy customer and thought people should be warned.

I also have very think and healthy hair before applying this product.

In the process of trying to lighten my colour treated medium-dark brown hair. The day before dying I used “Malibu C Quick Fix Hair treatment”, a cheap and natural crystal product to remove previously applied dyes.

I then used this Naturigin colour, easy to apply, good instructions, pleasant scent, organic etc. It does tend to dry out my hair, even after using the included conditioning treatment, but the colour is fabulous! (Very close to the examples shown on the box).

I recommend using an intense Argan oil type conditioner the next day, this really helps. just my 2 cents!.

I have being dying my hair bright, vibrant red for just over five years now, and Arctic Fox has been part of my color maintenance routine since day one. Vibrant red hair is not easy to maintain and keep from fading quickly, which can very quickly do serious damage to your hair if your only using ammonia-based chemical dyes every time you need to refresh your color.

Arctic Fox doesn’t damage hair at all. In fact, it helps undue the damage caused by permanent dyes because it doesn’t have any harsh chemicals that strip hair. Arctic Fox is actually GOOD for your hair and works just like a conditioner, not like a hair dye.

I add Arctic Fox to my regular conditioner (sulfate free of course) so that every time I wash my hair I’m also keeping my red looking vibrant and even healthier every time. I always wash my hair using the coolest water I can tolerate and after I shampoo I apply my premixed bottle of 3/4 sulfate free conditioner, 1/4 Arctic Fox Wrath + a dollop of Violet Dream and let it sit on my hair secured on top of my with a claw clip while I finish the rest of my shower routine, just like I would do with a nourishing hair mask.

Once my routine is done, I rinse out my hair thuroughly in cool water and towel dry it only so I get the most out of conditioning my hair, and viola! My looks, feels softer and healthier than before I washed it, plus my red still looks like it did the day I first day I dyed it.

It’s a win win. Not only does Artic Fox keep my red looking great, but it leaves my hair healthier every time also. Plus the custom colors you can create by mixing different different Arctic Fox colors together are endless! I was amazed at the color i got by mixing Purple AF + a touch of Aquamarine! It sounds crazy to mix aquamarine and deep purple together, but the color came out a multidimensional dark blue/purple-ish color that changes color depending on how the light hits it.

It’s my new favorite color! It does come out very dark, so I apply it (no conditioner added) to the bottom 1/3 of my hair and lightly pull the color upwards into my red to get a perfect blended fade from bright red to deep blue/purple.

I get compliments on my hair every day and people always ask me how I keep my color looking so bright all the time. Arctic Fox, that’s how! =).

I have been using arctic fox for almost a year now. I have used to it maintain my hair in various shades of blue, purple, pink, and turquoise. I switched over from overtone because it was staining my hair, esp the dark blue.

Arctic fox does not do this, but it also needs to be refreshed a bit more often. If you have bleached hair and want to switch colors somewhat frequently, this is the best I’ve found. My hair stylist can get my base back to blonde for when I want a change, while this was not achievable with other brands.

Blue in particular tends to be really stubborn to get out, but so far my hair stylist has no complaints about Poseidon or Blue Jean Baby. The color holds on WAY better to the bleached part of my hair (I have my stylist fade the bleach out so I don’t get abrupt looking roots, but I still get good longevity on all my hair by using this process: -Wash my hair with clarifying shampoo (do this a couple of days in a row leading up if you use dry shampoo a lot like I do) and DON’T condition -let it dry completely, the dryer the better.

-apply arctic fox color to dry hair -leave it on for 2 HOURS (the bottle will say 30 min – this is not enough time) -rinse the color out with the coldest temp you can tolerate (I have nerve damage so I use lukewarm water) – you should be good for 3-4 weeks as long as you do use your normal shampoo in your hair, especially not with a non-color safe shampoo.

Dry shampoo is your new best friend (I love Batiste’s products for this). Shower with a shower cap on if you take daily showers, and when you don’t, rinse your hair out and just use conditioner. I only use actual shampoo in the shower once a week or so.

This is what causes the most fading. If the idea of not shampooing/washing your hair in the shower frequently appauls you, maintainable fashion shades are not for you.

Wow. Just blown away!! I’ve been coloring my hair for well over 30 yrs, but have been different shades of Purples/Pinks for about 3 yrs now; The only 3 brands I ever use/trust are Arctic Fox, IroIro & Punky.

For those saying it dyes everything but their hair, I doubt that seriously, unless you do it wrong: If going LIGHTER, you MUST bleach it first, or yes, it won’t do much of anything. If you already have a naturally lighter color, it will show up, but if you want the EXACT color on the box/label, you’ve got to start w/basically ABSENCE of color, which is basically bleach blonde, & I always use Manic Panic’s AMPLIFIED Flash Lightening (Different than just Flash Lightening, it pulls a bit more color off, especially good for medium/darker browns, etc).

Kind of a no-brainer, actually. As far as ppl saying it gets everywhere: Use your head & PREPARE properly first, & that won’t happen. Use Vaseline around your face, & have PLENTY of old rags/towels laid out (in case of cast-off).

Remove all carpets from bathroom, etc. DON’T rush, & once it’s in your hair, cover it w/a shower cap or even a grocery bag; It helps it work better & also provides protection for anything you may rub against.

And always keep handy some rubbing alcohol (or ashes work, too) for quick clean up of hands, forehead, etc. Invest in some GOOD color refreshing shampoo in your desired color to keep it vibrant!! Really hope this helps.

All I know is that for a LONG time, I’ve somehow been able to do intricate things w/this brand among others, & in VERY bright, vibrant colors, such as ombre going purple, magenta to dark pink. I just don’t understand all the ppl having such issues.

This is finally the colour i was searching for! When your skin undertone is neutral and you like warm blondes, finding the balance between orange and beige is not easy! It’s the perfect colour match for me! It’s a beautiful warm blonde, with little to no need for neutralisation! It’s AMMONIA FREE (YAY I LOVE YOU L’OREAL) so it doesn’t smell like Voldemort’s defeat! I use it with the 20% vol l’oreal and it does the job! I have quite light hair naturally, so if you have very dark hair and want to go platinum blonde.

Don’t use it. Application is easy as well and the texture is perfect!.

Not a huge fan of this hair color product. It’s ok, but from the professional ones I prefer L’Oréal’s [brand:majirel]. Though I want to praise the tool that I still have from [brand:inoa]. It helps to squeeze out the cream from the tube to the last drop.

I love this dye! After having my hair blonde for the longest time, I was ready to go back to my roots. My hair was dry and brittle from all the processing, especially after trying to go brown with a harsher product that ended up drying out my hair even more.

Olia helped my hair do a 180 returning the shine and moisture back. When it comes to the shade, it’s on point. My roots are naturally dark tho, so results may vary depending on your color. This might not be the best shade to go with if you’re platinum blonde and need a stronger formula or more pigmented shade per say.

I wasn’t impressed with the quality of the packaging, which is the reason I’m not giving this product 5 stars. However, the results exceeded my expectations. You can definitely tell the formula is oil infused, which tends to have a more gentle and liquidly texture that facilitates the application process, especially on long and/or brittle hair.

I’d definitely recommend this product to those who are looking to restore their hair after a series of dyes; this is rly the best route to go. I did see some comments about people complaining about the formula being too runny and oily, but then again that is the catch of this product and how it’s been advertised.

So it might not be for everyone, but if you’re looking for something to bring the moisture back while giving you a fresh natural shade, you won’t be disappointed.

I started out with natural brown hair at my roots and i had old blonde ombre at the ends that has been colored several times before that was coming through. So i bought the 1. 0 black color hoping to darken all of my hair.

I liked how the formula had no harsh smell. It was easy to use and applied nicely. However, it kept washing out everytime i washed my hair. I only wash my hair 1-2 times a week. For some reason my roots turned lighter but my ends held in the black color.

I thought it wouldve been the opposite, since my roots were natural brown before i dyed it. I wont purchase this again. I bought the natural blue black in revlon colorsilk and it is dark black all over !.

Olia is perfect for people that color often and want to keep their hair healthy. I color once a month, more if I switch to a new shade, and my hair is still soft and healthy. Warning, this color is what the box shows, red! If you don’t want a bold red pick another shade.

If you do want to have some fun and be a bold redhead this color is awesome, I’m having a lot of fun with this shade and getting many compliments! Another warning, it will bleed for about a week but will stop with regular washing and does come off of clothes and towels without any struggle.

I wear an old white robe each time I color and the dye washes off easily every time, even with the red dye. Thank you Olia for a gentle product that lets me have some fun with hair!.

I was so excited to try IGK’s Permanent Color Kit because they are a cruelty free brand and the product is clean and vegan. My normal hair color is dark brown and I tried the color Back to Brown (5N).

To be honest, I had gotten kind of lazy with covering my grays (which somehow seemed to multiply rapidly during the pandemic), so I was in dire need of coloring my hair. The first thing I noticed was that my kit didn’t include gloves, which must’ve been a mistake since the instructions specifically say to put on gloves before applying the color.

Since I didn’t want to have my hands stained dark brown, I ended up having to ruin a pair of rubber kitchen gloves, which ended up being pretty bulky and cumbersome during the process. The kit also didn’t include an applicator brush of any kind, but thankfully I happened to have a spare applicator brush from an old dpHUE hair color kit because there’s no way I could work the color through my hair with just the bulky rubber kitchen gloves.

My grays are pretty stubborn so I left the color on for over an hour (the instructions say 35 mins but 45 mins for stubborn grays). Aside from the color, the kit included packets of Protect Color Block Barrier Gel, Erase Stain Removing Cleanser, and Post-Color Treatment Mask, which were nice touches.

However, the instructions say to cleanse with your favorite IGK shampoo before applying the Treatment Mask, so I was confused why they didn’t include a sample packet of shampoo as well. I didn’t have IGK shampoo on hand at home so I used a different brand of shampoo for color-treated hair instead.

Unfortunately, the end result was pretty disappointing. Despite letting the color process for over an hour, the grey coverage was awful. I don’t know if having to use bulky rubber kitchen gloves was to blame, but I could still see plenty of grays peeking through immediately after I completed the process, which you can see in the before and after pics.

The missing gloves, lack of applicator brush and shampoo packet are inconvenient but nothing I can’t work through. However, when I don’t even have complete grey coverage afterwards, there’s no point even using this product.

There are other cruelty-free brands out there with better results so I wouldn’t recommend this product.

I must admit that I’ve never had my hair professionally colored before and trying this IGK Hair Dye I think is definitely the closest I’ve ever gotten to it. When doing my survey I picked the color 1800 Espresso which is like a warm brown color which is exactly what I was going for.

Upon opening the box some things looked similar like I would get in a standard drugstore hair dye box, until I saw the COLOR BLOCK BARRIER GEL. I will say that one of the worst after effects of dying your own hair, is all the dye stains you get on your ears, forehead, and hard to reach and see places like the back of the neck.

I definitely knew I was in for a different experience when the box came with a protective gel to use so the hair dye stays on your hair only and away from my skin. I’m a big skincare junkie and ingredients are always super important, I’ve never thought about it with hair dye but now I do.

This formula contains Squalane, which is extremely hydrating so it naturally adds shine to the hair m, Orchid extract which acts as a natural moisturizer as well as Bamboo extract which keeps your strands healthy and strong.

After applying the dye and letting it sit, if you still got some on your skin, another savior is the ERASE 5 STAIN-REMOVING CLEANSER. Instead of usually having to scrub away any remenants of hair dye from my skin, this simple cleanser took care of it, easily.

The last step which to most of us drug store hair dye gals is the conditioning treatment, which is never enough product to saturate the hair and rarely feels like it deeply conditions. Equalvilant to that step is POST-COLOR TREATMENT MASK which is the exact opposite of what I’m used to, not only did I get a big enough portion for my hair, it felt like it was deeply conditioning my hair as well.

I wanted to the let the color sit for a few days before I did the review, but I must say my hair has never looked shinier, nourished, healthy after dying my hair. The IGK Permanent Color Kit is truly a straight from salon to your hands hair dye and I won’t be using anything else anytime Soon.

I’m thinking when I selected this color as one I would like to try I was thinking about my hair being prelightened before I colored it. My hair was not prelightened really although it was a lighter shade than my natural color bc I use Sun Bum products to naturally lighten my hair with UV light from the sun.

Needless to say my hair did come out with a reddish/orangey looking shade and not so much blonde or even almost blonde but that’s to b expected with darker shades of hair color! It specifically says not recommended for dark brown or black hair colors! No matter the color that I got wasn’t blondish but it was not an ugly color at all quite the contrary actually! There was NO strong ammonia smells the only odors were pleasant! The usual and expected shedding and obvious to the touch, right after use damage, was not even a part of this home hair coloring kit! Yeah no ammonia smell and no dehydrated brittle feeling hair.

from a box dye!! That’s super rare in my experience! My hair did feel a bit dry at first after washing the color out but after 1 application of their conditioner that’s included in the kit, and all signs of any super dryness just disappeared! Despite not being the shade on the box exactly it came out a not unpleasant color and ALL MY GREYS WERE G O N E!!!! Not a grey in sight since I used the coloring kit and it’s been 3 weeks tomorrow.

I would recommend this coloring kit for anybody who just has to dye their hair right now at home using a box kit because I think the instructions are so easy to follow and the product works well without extreme damage to ur hair like most of the box dye kits that are available.

👱‍♀️👱‍♀️👱‍♀️👱‍♀️ I have been growing out my natural hair for over a year now and was VERY apprehensive about coloring it, particularly because a lot of blondes have had a bad experience with this particular brand… 🚨BUT @schwarzkopfpro has listened to their customers and reformulated the Simply Color line.

🚨 I was offered an opportunity to try it again, and this time…. I actually did it! (See my previous post) @influenster ▶️SWIPE▶️ for before and after!! I will say that my hair was already kind of gray and on the ashy side to begin with, and it did make it a bit more golden.

But the final color matched the description on the box, I found the conditioner to work well, the products were easy to use, and I have no adverse side effects. I appreciate that this line is formulated with gentle ingredients, rather than harsh chemicals, because I’m very concerned about hair breakage and fall out right now.

I will say that the color didn’t seem to grab on to my grays as well as it could have, but that is probably because the hair was so much lighter than the color result was supposed to be. I do enjoy that it left in my hair is natural color variation, rather than dying it all one flat monotone shade.

I would try those hair dye again, and I am surprised I’m saying that. 👍👍👍 I suggest doing some research yourself on the ingredients, if turning to a less abrasive chemical die sounds good to you. They also have a complementary staff of professionals that will help you pick the perfect product.

I Used the intense expresso shade 4. 0. To begin my hair was a dark warm brown on the ends from previous dye and my natural medium golden brown color at my roots-mid lengths. the hair color covered my hair pretty evenly which was surprising! the hair color doesn’t smell bad and was so easy to apply! The formula of it is easy to apply and not super messy! The only thing I didn’t particularly like was that the color tube was so tough to squeeze the color cream into the developer!! The packaging on the color tube was very stiff and just so hard to squeeze it all out of the tube into the developer I wasn’t able to get all the product out into the developer it was rough this is one thing I wish they’d change to make the packaging easier to squeeze the color out of.

The actual applicator bottle is great though and so easy to use!!! My hair is below my shoulders and one box was JUST enough color to cover my entire hair and so if you have long hair 2 boxes may be better but you may be able to get away with just one.

The hair color shade itself is BEAUTIFUL! It’s a super dark brown that appears ALMOST black—- but it’s not black! It’s a dark gorgeous rich shiny multi toned dark deep brown that changes tones depending on what lighting your in! It’s that perfect dark brown that’s nearly black you see on women and think wow what is that shade!! but it has the pretty brown/ warm tones in the sun and certain lighting that makes it so perfect! If you want that perfect rich shiny dark brown that’s almost black but isn’t this is the shade your looking for!! It’s so shiny and such a very natural -yet exotic looking beautiful unique shade!! It’s perfect 🙂 if your on the fence just try it I promise !! I truly love the shade so much ! I also enjoy that the dye is free of ammonia alcohol ppd and ppe and I love that it has healthy ingredients in it! :).

Schwarzkopf Simply color VoxBox 💕When I received this Schwarzkopf hair color I looked them up and was happy to see the emphasis on a 100% recyclable carton being used for hair color. I also saw that Schwarzkopf Simply Color is available in many shades and some gorgeous blondes of course for the #SimplyColorBlondes 👱‍♀️collection.

Color results are pictured on the side of the box, 1 thing I would improve is to have the color results picture be a little bigger. When I shop for hair color I like to make sure that it is ammonia free.

This one is and it is also silicone and alcohol free✅. This all helps with keeping it gentle on my hair. The explanations for use are easy to follow✅. The post color Nourishing conditioner is a generous 1.

7oz, which I appreciate having long hair. It says it is 4 applications. I left it on a little longer than the suggested 2 minutes and it felt really smooth and conditioning to the length of my hair. Inside the lid is a reminder note✅ of your shade # and for when to buy your next box, I thought that was a nice touch💕 @SchwarzkopfUS #SimplyColorBlondes.

My hair is naturally really dark brown but has been bleached heavily to get platinum so very damaged. I used this dye over faded dark red brown and I’m in love. It’s more red than my previous red which I adore because I didn’t think it would be vivid like the box said.

It definitely is. Colour payoff is excellent. Easy to use, instructions were straight forward. The smell is really nice I think the conditioner you get with it is the smell that stays in the hair and it smells like a standard nice conditioner.

The red dripage from washing it did get everywhere but it washes off with water. Took longer to wash out than to apply. Ignore the rinse out instructions just cold water shampoo twice then use conditioner.

If you don’t want it to fade always wash hair with cool water not freezing and definitely not hot. Try to wash your hair once or twice a week no more so that you won’t need to dye it as much. My hair is so soft it’s still somewhat dry but that’s because it was bleached a couple months ago.

The only transfer I’ve had was on my towel when drying it but haven’t had any more transfer so far so I think I’m safe on that. I used two boxes on waist length hair, one on roots other one on mids and ends.

I have used Olia a few times now so I know how it works. I had previously used very intense red 6. 66 on ash blonde hair and let it wash out 80% to 90% before putting this rose shade in. I naturally have Ash blonde and grey hair in my 50s.

I used 2 boxes on mid shoulder length hair of this pink shade. This did lighten my hair to a very peachy, candy floss faint pink that was really patchy. There is only about 10% pink colour. It’s definitely not what is on the box, considering I did let my previous colour wash out to very light almost blonde again.

I am in NZ and had it shipped over from Australia as this colour isn’t available here,but I won’t be using it again. Quite disappointed really. I will wait about 4 to 6 weeks and put in either a red or a light brown to cover this.

For now I will have to just disguise it with a messy ponytail with long side strands or some beach waves made with my ghd. I don’t recommend this product at all. I even googled videos of people reviewing this product before using it too.

Most didn’t like the result. I don’t think there is enough colour in this product in the end. I think it has actually wrecked my hair sadly.

The Silver Violet Rapid Toner has a strong purple undertone, which is great if the hair has been lifted to a yellow tone (levels 8-10). However if you lifted the hair past the yellow tone and the hair is now white (levels 11-12) or has white pieces, the white pieces will show up with a hint of light purple*.

This isn’t good or bad. Just something to be aware of when coloring hair. Purple tones are used to negate unwanted yellow tones (think of traditional raw highlights before they have been toned) this is where this rapid toner would fit in! This will give you a cool blonde and can even bring you to a silver sister grey color.

Just be sure NOT to apply this color to natural, porous white hair because it could pick up purple on porous white hair. It’s a color deposit only so it will not lift color to a lighter shade, however, when toning yellow, blonde or raw highlights, this toner will give the appearance of a lighter, brighter, cool toned blonde.

*Over time the light purple will fade out, as this is a toner and toners fade over time. A clarifying shampoo will speed up the process of removing unwanted purple tones. !.

There is virtually no instructions on this. It says leave on anywhere from 5-20 minutes and doesn’t give you time tables based on the color you already have. I’m very surprised this is a professional brand for the lack of instructions they have.

Just because a toner says on the box “tones in 5 minutes” doesn’t mean people don’t need more instruction. I’m also not a licensed hair professional I do nails so I get my friends to help me with my hair.

In the pictures you can tell I left it on way too long. The gray faded fast and easily but my roots were a bright purple. The color did end up growing on me but I was very upset the first few days. Very disappointed that a professional brand doesn’t have more directions for people to understand.

Not everyone has excellent reading comprehension (hi it’s me).

This is a great little toner. I did take off one star, not because of the formulation or performance, but because I feel if you are going to send a toner that claims it is “specially formulated for use with Kenra Color Demi Permanent Coloring Cream Activator 9V to provide consistent reliable results,” then you should be sent that 9V activator.

Other than the absence of the specially formulated activator, this toner was brightening and it provided the silver, ashy, beautiful tone I was looking for following a heavy blonde highlight. I love that it is formulated with out ammonia, I didn’t miss smelling that AT ALL, as well as it being a “rapid toner,” providing results in just five minutes.

This is a HUGE bonus for professionals, as it means less time off of your clients’ appointment waiting for the desired results. I will use this toner again for sure, on clients as well as on my own blonde hair!.

I rotated the 5 MM shampoos for several weeks, plus did the Zen Detox prior to applying the two step grey hair henna process. I wanted to make sure my hair was healthier prior to applying the henna. Here are the steps I used: 1.

Hair had not been chemically treated for approximately 12 weeks. I have medium brown hair with grey coming in mainly on top of scalp and front hairline. 2. Washed hair the night prior to the morning of the red henna application.

2. Used alma powder (2. 5) with whole red henna package. Used distilled water for liquid. Mixed up at night and let sit covered for 12 hours 3. Applied and let sit on hair for 1. 5 hours. Note: The video on website says to leave red on for only 1 hour.

The instructions say 1-3 hours. Sprayed head with fine mist of distilled water to moisten before covering head in plastic wrap and a towel. I have shoulder length fine straighter hair. I did not need the whole package.

4. Rinsed off with not much trouble and my hair was red. The greys were well covered. I actually kind of liked the red color. It did get somewhat darker over the next 72 hours but it was still red. 5.

Mixed up 1/2 package of the light brown henna. Added 1 T of alma, a few drops of Euro oil, and almost 1 cup of warm distilled water. Covered and let sit overnight. 6. Next morning took 1/2 of indigo included in light brown henna package, mixed with distilled water to that yoghurt consistency and added to the light brown henna mixed that was mixed up the night before.

I have a kitchen scale that I used to precisely measure out the henna and indigo into half increments. 7. Applied to hair like I did the red three days earlier however left it on for 3 hours. After rinsing, my hair was now a medium brown with a deep auburn red undertone.

It actually looks great and all grey was covered. I am glad I followed the suggestion to go a shade lighter than what your hair color is. The light brown henna resulted in a darker brown than my original hair color.

Note that I did not wash after each henna application for at least 30 hours. I did apply some Euro oil very sparingly on the pieces of hair that had been previously chemically highlighted. I really like the results but have to admit that the process is a bit time consuming.

I definitely will continue using this method. It feels great to not be using such toxic chemicals on my hair.

I used the red henna as a first step for gray coverage. I used cooled black tea and two tablespoons apple cider vinegar to mix it up, and I let it sit covered in a bowl for 11. 5 hours overnight for dye release because it was a chilly night.

I had help to apply it, it took us about an hour to get it all applied. I used one whole package for my shoulder length hair and it was plenty, my helper glopped it on really thick. I covered it up in plastic and a towel and let it stay on for 5 hours, a little more than the instructions say because I wanted it to be dark.

On the first day it was a beautiful red, and my grays were a bright glowing red! 72 hours later it all darkened up and got more subtle. I like it a lot. Tomorrow I plan to apply light brown henna + amla as a 2nd step for gray coverage, so I’ll see how it goes, I’m guessing it’s not going to be very light though.

One note, the tiny bit of hair that peaked out of the plastic shower cap in front of my ears did not end up with as much color, and I think it is because it dried out since it was exposed and didn’t stay moist the whole time.

Next time I will cover those spots better with plastic wrap too.
