20 Best Anchor For Sandy Bottom (2022 Updated)

I got this pole along with the Power System and used it about 6 times before making a decision if I liked it or not. I really love this tool for kayak fishing! I holds your boat in position while fishing.

I’m running a single pole so best practice is to position the pole upstream so you don’t spin too much. A second pole would fix this but I can work with it. A benefit I did not expect but makes me very happy is more solid hooksets on bigger fish.

I always felt the kayak would drift on my hook sets thereby not getting a solid hold. Now the yak stay in position and all that power goes to the hookset rather then to moving the kayak.

This is a very lightweight 8’ spike. It arrived quickly from fishing online. I have seen that the top falls out after only a few uses. I checked mine and it seems pretty secure. If I notice it getting loose I will super glue it in the shaft.

I purchased this spike to use with my Hobie PA 12 and the micro power pole. Seems like this is the standard in shallow water anchor spikes if not going the DIY route.

Horrible, will never buy these over priced products again! The tip broke off the first time I used them. Sent a email, they never replied. If I would’ve know this I would’ve bought the cheaper knock offs.

Several times the anchor had difficulty setting and holding in hard sand. To resolve the problem, the leading edge was sharpened with an angle grinder. It now sets quickly and goes deep in hard sand.

Performance in other bottoms didn’t change. We’ve used this anchor for many years on our 43′ powerboat without problems other than in Soft bottoms. In soft mud so we use a Danforth.

The anchor I received does not look like the product in the photo. The casting is all pitted and irregular. It doesn’t look like any galvanized anchor I’ve ever seen, more like paint and comes off on my hands.

I’m pretty sure it would work but don’t want to this on the front of my boat. I plan on returning. Image left is the anchor on the website, right is the actual anchor.

I have a 66# Lewmar Bruce and I am going to purchase a 110# soon. I have seen the smaller Bruce style anchors work very poorly here in the Pacific Northwest where the bottom can be covered with kelp and such.

The smaller sizes just don’t penetrate through to the true bottom and therefore tend to not “bite”. The biggest of these anchors don’t have this issue. CQR style, Delta, and others are better anchors on a per-pound comparison but these Lewmar Bruce anchors are cheap enough, per pound, to afford a size or two heavier.

The other thing is that in the Pacific Northwest we often anchor in small coves in 80 to 100 ft depths so “book recommended” 7:1 scopes are just not practical. You need, instead, at least a size larger anchor than the “catalog recommendation” and all chain is always preferred.

An electric windless is obviously a must with these beasts.

I was attracted to this anchor by the marketing. i liked that it was light weight and therefor, easier for my wife, and myself, to handle. I have to lean quite away over the bow of my center console to reach the anchor rode.

Since I cannot stand over the anchor when pulling it in, a lighter anchor is easier to weigh. I’ve been disappointed for two reasons. The first is that it will not hold on a hard bottom. In the Chesapeake Bay we have many areas of muddy bottoms, but some of the most productive fishing is over hard bottoms or oyster beds.

When the tide is running this thing bounces along the bottom like it is being dragged over a marble floor. My second complaint is that the anchor has two configurations: one for mud and the other for harder bottoms.

It takes the use of a screw driver and a wrench at the same time to change the configuration from one to the other. You have to hold the anchor in your lap, or otherwise let it squirm on the fiberglass deck in order to perform this procedure, being careful not to drop the nuts and bolts.

This is very frustrating on a hot day on a pitching boat when you are trying to get your anchor to catch in a busy fishing area or anchorage.

Replaced my galvanized fluke anchor with the FX-7, for the light weight characteristics. I used the same rope and chain configurations. The Fortress anchor failed to set in my usual fishing places. After about 30-40 attempts to set the anchor in various locations, depths and bottom conditions, I gave up.

Reinstalled my original anchor and it works 100% of the time. I called Fortress for advice. Rep. offered me no real solutions. The anchor just bounces along the bottom. West Marine rep suggested I install 15 feet of chain vs.

6 feet. I don’t think that would work and will defeat the purpose of the lightweight anchor. Returned the anchor to West Marine for a full refund.

I was obviously attracted to these anchors because of how light they are. Did a ton of research on these. Here is the turning point for me. I work in Ft. Lauderdale where these are made. I actually work for the fire department and Fortress is in the area my station covers.

My first issue was because I have a bow anchor locker and the space is limited. The stock bar was to long to fit. I swung by Fortress to ask about cutting the stock so it would fit. I was advised that the stock was part of the design but you can cut it.

Since they have the lifetime warranty, the guy advised that I could always get another stock if needed. I bought the anchor (FX-7). Went home and cut it. Fit in the locker with no problem. I’ve used the anchor numerous times and this thing holds! Easiest anchor to set.

I put 8ft of chain on and this thing falls perfect every time. Look into their website and check them out. Well worth the money and I would recommend that you at least take a look.

I am using this anchor (several in fact) to help hold down deck boxes in the Florida dirt/sand. I haven’t tested them against hurricane force winds, so I can’t say fully how they did, but that’s what they’re for.

Seem better quality than similar ones that are a little cheaper. Easy enough to install.

We live in town but are lucky enough to have a huge back yard big enough to tie our dog out on a 100 foot lead. He LOVES to chase a ball. and anything else that may move fast in his field of vision. Our akita cattle dog mix is very intelligent and slows down before the rope ends but it’s so nice to know the can’t pull the tie out from the ground if something just too irresistible comes by.

My husband loves the fold down feature which allows him to mow/ drive right over it without damage!.

I purchased these anchors to straighten my fence in the backyard. I was not sure if I should get the ten inch ones or the sixteen inch. I got the ten and worked great. I have 3/16″ wire rope pulling on them and they are solid, I used a pipe through the loop and just twisted them in, It was not difficult and they are flush to the ground so you can run your lawnmower over them with no problem.

Good purchase. They worked better than I thought they would.

I have tried several types of kayak anchors and end up drifting and pulling up 50 pounds of coontails and other aquatic plants in the lake. This anchor holds my Radar 115 and my Old Town Predator Angler 135 in place.

If this anchor starts sliding on the bottom it is safe to say its too windy and time to get off the lake. Love the coating and smoothness with no sharp edges. Does not act as a week hoe and collect weeds like the collapsible grappling hook style.

The shape does not hold alot of sediment. A quick twist and any sediment comes off before putting back in the kayak. Best anchor I have found yet!.

Had a 10 lbs mushroom anchor that couldn’t quite keep a 1000 lbs SeaDoo in-place in 2 foot waves. This solved the dragging anchor concern and still allows me to throw it offshore a bit without wrecking my back.

For my use, this is for temporary anchoring while I’m nearby, not for overnight moorage, but it has held fast 100-percent of the time. Seabed is sand and beach rocks. This anchor comes with a heavy shackle bolt to attach a rope or chain to.

Nice touch.

Finally a coated river anchor that is well suited to my 20′ center console bay boat and at a nice price! I have been searching for a secondary anchor for my boat that is not obtrusive or dangerous on the deck of the boat.

You can’t beat this heavy, compact river anchor. I will still have my large “fluke” style anchor tucked away in the main anchor locker but I keep this one handy. Well pleased with the design and the galvanized anchor shackle with a screw in pin that comes included.

The shackle fits well into my SEACHOICE 1/4″ galvanized anchor lead chain (see photo).

This was a replacement for an older steel anchor of almost equal measurements. I’m using this on a 18 ft flats boat as this was the smallest anchor by the maker and the only one that would fit in the anchor locker.

The application for usage is shallow water. This anchor is rated for a smaller boat, but I believe this to be a perfect match for my boat. I am using 4′ of heavy SS chain with it. After using this set up for several times I have had no issues with using this light anchor over my older one.

My experience has been that it is a simple throw it in and it will set on its own. I have gone through a couple of thunder storms with 20+ winds and the anchor has held each time while anchoring in sand.

I would recommend this item and wish I had purchased one several years ago. I gave four stars over five stars, only as you have to assemble this anchor and its best to have an extra set of hands or a vice to do so.

I bought these anchors for a 19. 5 foot boat for anchoring at the Lake Erie beaches, which can see a lot of waves from winds and other boaters. The anchors dig in quickly and hold the boat in place well.

Not to mention that they are so easy to use with their light weight.

Needed a medium sized anchor with relatively narrow width to fit in my anchor locker. Works well for my 22′ boat. Had the chance to observe the anchor and chain in action on the sandbar recently. Quickly grabbed into the sandy bottom and held perfectly all day.

Item was as described, shipped and arrived quickly.

Poor quality welding job with spatters of metal all over the anchor. In addition, the surface finish of the anchor is irregular/disturbed. I had to do some sanding to reduce risk of scratching the boat, which will reduce rust protection, but it’s unclear how well protected it was in the first place.

Great quality hot dipped galvanized fluke anchor. Exactly as described 24″ anchor holds very well. Flukes are fully welded to cross bar. I’m gonna buy the smaller version (12′ – 16′) as a stern anchor or spare when they are back in stock.

This has a mirror polish from end to end. I could not see any difference between this anchor and tje $1,400 anchor I ordered in the same weight class. I’m sure there’s a difference somewhere but then again I could not see it and it was over $1,000 cheaper.

It is equipped with a hole at the front of the anchor for a disconnect setup if the anchor gets stuck. Will definitely order again if I need one.

I have a 29 foot Sea Ray that I just had painted and new outdrives installed. The boat looked so good I just couldn’t leave the galvanized anchor hanging in the bow. I searched the web and found this Stainless Steel anchor.

I took a chance and ordered this one because it was hundreds of dollars less than our local Marine store. It arrived quickly in perfect condition. It’s stamped as a 6kg but listed as 13 lbs. I’m not sure why because all the others sold as 6kg are listed at 14 pounds.

My only small negative is I wish the 6kg wasn’t stamped into the shaft of the anchor.

I have a 33000lb 41′ foot sport fisherman and I chose the 44lb stainless delta wing for my primary anchor. This anchor showed up on time and I was immediately impressed by the finish and build quality.

I have dropped this rig about 6 times and it never fails to set on the first time. We raft up with other boats of similar size and I feel confident that this will secure all of us through any weather or currant conditions we may encounter.

I wanted to share my experience with this product and the company that manufactures it. Excellent product. Works great. I have 2 that I made custom mounts for that mount to the stern on my 18 ft. Pontoon Suntracker Bass Buggy.

The best thing I can say is that they are top notch when it comes to customer service. I mounted my hydraulic units under my long couch seating on pontoon. This past spring I went to clean out compartment and was greeted by yellow jackets.

In my haste to evade being stung I inadvertently pulled one of my return hydraulic lines out of the hydraulic unit. When I left to go fishing I stopped about 20 miles away from home to fuel up and discovered that the pressure had bled off power pole and had lowered and dragged on roadway to the point that I was now missing around 18 inches of my pole.

When I contacted power pole to see about ordering a new one. They sent me not one, but 2 new replacement poles at no cost. I would buy their product over any others for this reason alone. It is great to see a company go to this length in their customer satisfaction.

great product for the price. I wanted something that was not going to cost me a fortune. Performed well when I took the boat out the other day. I will say that the instructions for priming the pump were not good.

I went on youtube and found a video that did a lot better job explaining how to prime it easier. Other than that only took me about an hour to install. I would recommend this product.

I like the DeckHand 25 Electric Anchor Winch. I installed it on my 15 ft fishing boat. It does everything I wanted. I can run it from anywhere in the boat with the remote or directly with the switches on the housing.

It was not hard to install but the directions were a little unclear in some areas. It is a little noisily on the first 2 seconds of releasing the anchor. I have only used it a few times so I can’t comment on how it will hold up, but so far it’s been great.

I purchased this after returning a different brand of (noisy and slow) electronic anchor. The Minn Kota is much quieter and quicker which makes a big difference. Installation was common sense – It sits near me towards the back of my 14 foot aluminum fishing boat.

I have 3 pulleys going to the front of the boat with my main pulley overhangs the front of the boat. I just simply push the button to anchor. no more hand cranking. and I’m now a spoiled and happy fisherman!.

The deck hand was easy to install. We hooked it up to battery that is already in boat. It is also very simple to use. Just a push of a button will lower and raise your anchor. It does not come with the anchor; you must purchase it separately.

Bought this Lewmar Delta Anchor for my 25 foot Bayliner Cierra, Old Danforth anchor was not holding well during tide changes in Sacramento delta, maybe it was to small. Since using the 14lb Delta have had no problems with holding in the mud with fast currents or tide changes.

I thought it might have been a little heavy for my windlass but I’ve had no problems with it going down and setting in or during retrieval. Anchor came straight up with no added stress on windlass. Also the shaft on the anchor fit going thru the loop on my anchor roller on front of boat.

So far so good with this anchor. Extremely satisfied.

Own a 34′ 12 ton fast trawler in the Caribbean. The Delta is solid, well built and simply works. I used original danforth before on my sailboat. No windlass, I would retrieve manually. The problem with the Danforth/Fortress is that the get easily stuck on rocky/coral bottoms.

If you have a windlass, you get a nice twisted mess when that happens and you pull it up. Apart from that, the Fortress is the one for most holding force. Yes, the Delta is #2 in holding power, this downside is specially noticable on mud.

Anything over 20Kts and I have to get my secondary Fortress out. This is only in soft mud. On all other bottoms, I’ve found that it will hold just as strong as anything. and the #1 advantage, pull the heck out of it straight up and it will release, no matter what it was stuck with, and it will never, ever, break or bend.

I was using the 22lbs, recommended up to 41’but I will get a 35Lbs.

You cannot find a Guardian anchor for this the price Wholesale Marine has anywhere. This is our 3rd one from Wholesale Marine. Wish the Anchors were as good as WM. One of these days I’ll step up and buy the “Fortress”.

First off wholesale has been great to me great products as well. Now the review is about the anchor not wholsesale. I was told this anchor was the best to get for my boat. I have both sand and mud botto a around.

It’s too much to constantly add or remove mudd flaps, with the mud flaps the anchor doesn’t set well in the sand. I had the anchor dragging me on a descent rip current. This anchor would be great if it had pins to quickly remove mudd flaps but8 screws is too much while out fishing.

My next purchase is power poles to avoid ever using anchor this is why I chose 3 stars.

I bought a anchor from a chain store and it what a piece of junk. I purchased the Guardian and wow what a difference. I purchased an undersized for my boat to use as a stern anchor but the excellent holding power I have been using it for the main anchor because it is so light, sets quick and digs in and holds fantastic.

I have a Seway 18 Center console.

We purchased this kit, on the recommendation of a West Marine sales person, to replace an anchor we lost on our 20′ boat. (The original anchor was a Delta plow style on a 1/2 heavy duty rope. ) The kit included everything you need to get up and running, but the quality, especially compared to the one we were used to, is lacking.

The rope is nylon and at 3/8, very slick and thin when you’re trying to pull up the weight of the chain and anchor. The rope also has a bunch of “stretch” to it, making the retrival process feel more labor intensive.

The anchor and chain itself are decent and work well. This would be an excellent choice for someone just starting out or looking for a cheap, quick set up.

The other day, as I was anchored near the shore enjoying an adult beverage and a stogie. I noticed I was drifting rapidly to the shore. Naturally. my Boy Scout knot didn’t hold on the rail with the waves and my anchor and rode went to Davey Jone’s Locker.

I never liked that anchor anyway. it never would hold. So off to West Marine. The sales rep steered me toward this package. It has a quality anchor (that really holds), lots of chain and 200′ of quality rope (I secured the free end to my locker).

Typically classy West Marine. they even put a zip tie on the anchor shackle! Go WM. 😁.

UPS dropped the ball and didn’t deliver the entire order, leaving off a life vest and an anchor. We were about to leave on vacation and needed those pieces, but UPS was useless. With a day and a half before our trip (to Canada), West said no worries, and overnighted the vest and anchor.

UPS calls me a week later, still unable to find the order. Useless Parcel Service in action. But West Marine rocks!.

jku was stuck, tried pulling straight in mud on level ground I tried multiple attempts over two hours at different set angles. Doesn’t self set period. Had two people(better than one) during those hours and standing on the anchor to dig while pulling which is dangerous, didn’t get anywhere near 12000 lbs of force advertised.

Had nearly all cable out for maximum anchor scope. Afterwards went on YouTube to see a guy testing his. His testing ended with the Jeep(never stuck) rolling down a hill in neutral. My estimate is the anchor breaks out with 1000 lbs of force far from 12000 lbs.

I think the 12000 lb rating is hooking the anchor around a tree or giant rock. After two hours I gave up on the anchor with the Jeep not moving a inch. My only other anchor point in reach was at my 9 o’clock had to go from bumper round tree to rear bumper and pull and drive at same time.

Which freed me Bottom line I went from barely stuck to upto the frame playing with a stupid anchor over multiple hours and never moved a inch. Even used a shovel multiple times to clear excess mud build up around tires.

I’m tempted to say better than nothing but it takes several pounds of force to Roll a Jeep on flat pavement. 1000 pounds of force with a Jeep stuck in a 3″ of mud isn’t a game changer. I’d expect better results from a marine mantus anchor overall, a mantus will self set and dig and dig.

Even a fortress anchor, For the size equivalent get two.

Ok so I always was paranoid about a dead mans hole. That’s when you dig a hole rap your strap through and around your spare drop it in. Refill the whole jumping up and down to pack it in. Then pray on your knees when you hook the winch up to it that the tire dosent come out! Cause if it does.

There goes three of the hardest hours you ever worked! I coulda had a heart attack under that heat. Then hope your not stuck near the waters edge and high tide coming up, cause by then(3 hours)your under the water and say bye bye baby to whatever off road rig your driving! Ok so I purchased the ground anchor and ran to the beach with my JL and ready winch to try this new device.

I followed all instructions. Set it up correctly and most of all being safe! Well it works! Jezzzzzz louwezzzz it works. I was amazed and all in under 5 minutes. 5 minutes! I was truly amazed. If your on the beach you would be nuts not to have this ground anchor with you for that just Incase moment.

People around me watched in amazement. I finally know what a stud feels like lol. Thanks for this great product! I’ll never leave home without it!.

This anchor is pretty stout. At $150 it looked like a pretty good value compared to others. I’m no welder but the welds look a little sloppy. I’m pretty sure it will do the job. However, I won’t know until I finish the work that was left undone.

Specifically the draw bar has three holes that can be used to adjust the angle of draw. The holes are not drilled out to fit the included pins! Should be simple enough to fix but I shouldn’t have to.

A bag was included. That’s a nice tough but it is pretty thin so I don’t know how long that will last. Would I buy it again. Sure. About my truck: It’s a 2020 Colorado ZR2 Bison diesel.
