20 Best Boot Gaiters For Hunting (2022 Updated)

Ok, so, i live in southern west virginia, i bought the solitude set coat and bibs, and the furnace set tops and bottoms. So, my experience was ranging from 50 degrees and sunny, to 30 degrees and snowing with high wind, i only wore compression underneath as my base layer, nothing else.

The 50 degrees day was hot, and i was stripping down to my base layers through out my day, this set is super light weight, i spent my hunt on the side of a mountain in which i had to hike up and down, this is probably the best INVESTMENT iv ever made, i was skeptical at first, because spending that much money on hunting gear, You kinda have to justify it at times.

So i pulled the trigger on the sets. Im super happy with the money spent! I was in thick brush, briers and steep steep mountain coal county terrain. It suited me 110%. I have no thread picks from the briers, the zips on each side of the coat are amazing for when you start to sweat, and need to dump heat quickly to cool off, the front zipper pocket on the coat fit my iphone 12 pro maxx perfectly, with my hunting tags and picture ID.

I also bought the neck gaitor. This thing is hands down amazing, i thought when i pulled it out of the plastic, that it was thin, and wouldnt hold up in the cold, i wore it with my orange ball cap, and i was nice and toasty for my hunt.

Bottom line, if your a skeptic like i am. Don’t think twice about buying this set up, it holds up extremely well, i put it through the ringer this past week. The zippers are extremely well made, its soft, does not make noise by any means.

And you will get hot in this particular set up before you get cold. If you have doubts about your sizes as a first time buyer, it would benefit you to take a couple quick measurements for your body, give it to your support team member, and they will fit you to a T.

I was extremely impressed with the customer service. Fantastic customer service, fantastic gear, extremely well made, hands down, amazing stuff!.

I’ve had merino wool neck gaiters in the past from other companies and though they worked great at first, after a half hour or so they would get wet from breathing through them. This moisture would never dry so I would end up having to spin it on my neck to get to a new dry spot only to repeat the whole process again within an hour.

They worked, but it was annoying. This piece is amazing! Keeps your neck warm, let’s you cover your face, and does not build up moisture quickly. I’m not saying it does not get some moisture, but it is not horrible.

And, I also was playing around in the stand this past weekend and realized if you open your mouth and inhale with a long, slow breath about 5 times, it will dry the moisture. This also did not work with the other companies.

Midweight Merino Nec Gaiter is comfortable and not itchy. It runs a little large for me and has a tendency to slip down. It did not shrink in the wash, following the laundering directions (which I thought it would).

Also, the neck material bunches up around the throat, and I would like to see a larger or flared neck opening, more like a firefighter’s flash hood. This is more of a stovepipe design. Overall, I like the garment and it keeps me warm on chilly days.

I would need additional/thicker layers on days below 20 degrees. This is one size fits all, but review would not submit without picking a size and this was not an option, so I picked medium.

These are soft and comfortable and go well with my olive green Hunter boots. I generally wear a size 5. 5 or 6 shoe. The boots at size 6 were a little big and these socks make up the difference, so the boots fit comfortably now.

The one thing is that even with a size M sock, there is still some bunching around my ankle because my feet are still too small for the socks.

These fleece socks are supper comfortable and great quality. They are warm and comfy in the Hunter Original Tall Rain Boots. They can be removed in warmer conditions making the boot more versatile than the insulated boot version.

I highly recommend these socks.

I bought these in October and they are soooooo comfy and warm. Great to bee-bop around NYC. Easy slip on and off and the small heal gives more support as opposed to the flat sole Hunter boots. Can walk in them for hours.

I have not purchased the Hunter boot socks that go with them so will have to get a pair for when the weather gets colder.

Color is as bright as pictured, and the fabric is soft and smooth against neck and face, yet helps block wind somewhat. Gaiter is long enough to cover my neck and chin, plus bottom half of nose if desired.

I purchased this for fall/winter bike rides so chose the bright safety yellow color. In a pinch, I could also “flatten and smooth” the gaiter and layer it over chest area, underneath a shirt/jersey or jacket to add a bit of warmth to core.

We’re old snowmobilers and rode for 3 decades before our bodies listened to our brains and said enough. After a decade of not riding, we purchased motorcycles and have never looked back. What fun! HOWEVER.

cold weather attire has evolved since our riding days and we’re in the process of updating. We’ve found the 21st century style clothing is lighter, less bulky and comfortable. And speaking of bulky – – our old neck gaiters about strangled us so we replaced them with the Condor 221106 Tactical Thermo Neck Gaiter Neckwarmer Mask Microfleece.

It’s lightweight, soft, comfortable and versatile. It can be used just to warm your neck or you can pull it up further on your face to cover your nose and/or cover your ears. Needless to say, we are impressed and very satisfied with our purchase.

We have bought two of these and love them! It fits our 8 year old daughter and my 75 year old mom. It is great for keeping warm while sledriding, at an outdoor sporting event, or at outdoor Christmas light displays.

It is typically used as a nose and mouth warmer but can be worn lower as a neck warmer. The elastic band sets this version apart from similar versions without elastic since it holds it tight to keep the cold out.

I have a half dozen different balaclavas of different weights and materials which are essential for cold weather riding. The Sealskinz all weather head gator can be worn separately or. over any of them.

Cycling, it’s long enough to keep rain out of my neck. Off the bike it pairs well with a jacket with or without a hood. Surprisingly comfortable and adjustable. I’ll probably buy a second one.

Bought for the girlfriend but we havent used it yet but upon looking at it I’d have to say its nicely put together and has a cool look to it if that matters at all. I think it does to her. Hiking clothes seem to be part fashion and part enjoyment of getting out there.

We have been caught a few times in in the mountains when a storm has whipped up some windy and sleeting weather. The look on her wet wind and cold reddened face prompted me to try and rememdy that for the next time.

Without even trying it Im thinking it should do the trick lol. On a side note I ordered a pair of sealskinz men XL gloves and they are on the very tight small side I always buy XL gloves and its usually just right but guys if youre ordering gloves go one size up.

I really suffer from cold round my ears on rides here in the Brecon Beacons and this is warm, soft and comfortable, even on a long ride. The usual superb Sealskinz waterproofing means that it does away with the need for a waterproof helmet cover.

I would definitely recommend.

This is lightweight mask that fits your face perfectly. Love the total camo design with the tight mesh design on the mouthpiece. Light but helps keep the wind off the face on those windy day outings.

Will be perfect for the spring turkey season as well. Great product.

I really like the design and features of these gaiters, but you need to buy these gaiters based on calf circumference, and not shoe size. For example: The medium gaiters have the correct fit for my shoe size, but the large gaiters have the correct fit for my calf circumference.

I bought the large and so there is a bit of trade-off; you calf comfort while the fit around the shoe is a bit loose. I think the Hillsound needs address the shoe/calf fit issue; I suspect the fit issues are turning away potential buyers.

Maybe they could have a new sizing system such as: Medium Medium, Medium Large, Medium Extra Large. etc. That said, the things I like about the Super Armadillo Nano Gaiters: 1. Zip down waterproof zipper.

[my old gaiters have Velcro closures, which tend to pop open] 2. Waterproof and breathable. [after hiking around for 3 or 4 hours in warm 20c/68f weather, my legs were not sweaty] 3. Cam buckle top closure.

[my old gaiters have a stretchy draw string with cord-locks that constantly need re-tightening] 4. Stretchy upper section. [which helps with the calf fit issue as noted above] 5. The secure hook that faces upwards.

[this makes it almost impossible to unhook from your boot laces].

I had high hopes for these gaiters. They look well built and sturdy. I also ordered a pair from another brand; in comparing the two, my worries were: 1. the zipper – eventhough it looks very well made, the thought of it somehow freezing made me unease, as it is exposed, contrary to having an additional velcro cover to protect it.

2. the buckle strap at the top – contrary to the other model I got, which had an elastic rope, I also feared I could have a malfunction with the buckle. Again, because of this, I decided these gaiters were not for me based on the type of deep snow activities planned.

That said, other than those 2 points, the gaiters do look to be well made and with high quality materials. Also to note, these gaiters are a bit heavier than other models.

My previous gaiters would continually slide down my calf, but these are a more rigid material and stay in place. I used the size guide on their website and was on edge of being a small and a medium; I purchased the small but really should have sized up to a medium.

These are tight, but not uncomfortably so. Wearing extra base layers or thick pants makes it difficult to do up the zipper. So if you’re on the cusp of a size, definitely get the next size up as there’s adjustable straps.

Outside of the sizing though, these have been bombproof with the west coast rain and mud. Two thumbs up.

I want to be as fair as possible in this review. Used hard for one spring black bear and fall moose season. The fit is great over all my leather and nylon Crispi boots. Love their ability to keep moisture and water out of my boots and socks and it protects my shins from abrasions that my Calor pants weren’t designed to do.

However, they only held up for this years’ season. stitching that holds outer and inner layers came undone. Rips and fraying in the lower panels render it less than waterproof. Seam tape along the inside seam have come undone.

probably as a result of the external rips and fraying. The only other gaiter I can compare it to is the OR Expidition Crocodiles that I’ve owned and used hard for over 7 years. Not a single issue with those.

Recommendation to Badlands. use a cordura nylon lower panel for durability and longevity. Remove that triangular piece featured on the main velcro closure because it gets snagged then ripped and frayed.

Truth is I’d buy it again because it does the job, matches my ensemble (gotta look good doing it otherwise what’s the point right?), and that unconditional lifetime no questions asked guarantee!.

These gaiters are great when I get to wear them. My wife seems to snag them before I get the chance! We wear these hunting in Colorado and love the fact that they help protect your legs while tearing through the brush and crossing downfalls.

They also help well with keeping debris from entering your hiking boots. The straps and material has held up well. The quality is great as always from Badlands. They fit well but I do recommend the larger size if you plan on wearing heavier pants.

I just got done on a late cow elk hunt here in Idaho. Tagged out 12/28/2021We had 2ft of snow on the ground and it was -4 the day I tagged out. These kept the powder from getting down in my boots by the way, I only wear ankle boots.

My feet stayed dry and comfortable. I’m amazed how blood does not stain the things. A handful of snow takes it right off no stains. Even missed getting some blood off and it was DRIED on after a 3 hour trip back with the heater on.

Simply put them on a gentle cycle and everything came right out. I’m thoroughly impressed!.

How is everyone breaking buckles after one hike, while others have been using these gaiters for years without issue? After breaking my pair after one hike, returning them, getting another pair, and breaking the second pair after the first hike as well, I contacted Outdoor Research support to ask directly, and I got an answer.

See attached screenshot. It turns out Outdoor Research knows that the buckles are breaking and continues to sell these gaiters made with a “production error”. They have not recalled them, have not announced the error on their website, have not pulled this product from trusted partners like REI or even their own online store.

They’re just crossing their fingers that your defective gaiters wont ruin your outing. As you can see in the reviews, these are, when not made with a production error, apparently robust gaiters that will get you through many extreme conditions.

No wonder people with years of enjoyment with these are wondering “how folks are managing to break the buckle after 1 hike”. The answer is simple: we’ve been sold a defective product. You can see from OR’s support person, that the corrected models with non production error buckles will apparently be available in the Spring models of 2022.

But if one were to order a pair of these in Spring, how would one know if they are getting the “fixed” new version that wont break or yet another defective pair from the old inventory? If they’re okay with selling defective gaiters to you now, what makes you think they won’t be okay with selling you the rest of their defective inventory before the new models are made available? I cannot recommend these until for sure all the bogus “production error” models are out of circulation, and without being able to tell the difference between defective and fixed models, your guess is as good as mine as to when it might be safe to buy these again.

Shame on OR for identifying a production error resulting in broken products and continuing to sell them.

Just received yesterday. Not only was the service impeccable, the product itself is the best “buff” I have had since they came into inception. The quality is premium and feel is perfect to leave on for a whole day’s trip.

Normally I have to remove my “buff” for periods of a time during the day. This one is very cooling, glasses don’t fog up, and comfortable without you feeling as though you are in some sort of neck and head brace.

Mostly super happy with the purchase. Have used them twice in serious mountain settings. The durability, breathability, and material stretch/comfort is awesome. One the critical feedback: The range of boot size that these accommodate is more limited than I had thought they would be.

For my slimmer alpine boots, they work great, but for my old-school leather telemark boots, they seem to struggle to fit, with the under-strap being almost to the last pinhole. Also, the top closure buckle barely cinches down tight enough while wearing several layers.

I have legs on the skinnier side, and am wondering if these will work for me on warmer days when I’ll be wanting to wear minimal layers or even shorts. In the end, I’m happy with the purchase. I read about the manufacturing defect on the OR Croc gaiters and am glad I went with these instead and look forward to getting many more adventures out of them.

I am a firm believer in having gaiters in one’s hunting inventory. There is little else worse than having wet and cold feet while out in the field. I wish I would have known about the virtues of gaiters much earlier in my hunting adventures.

The Yukon gaiters from KUIU are the best I have used. They achieve the difficult balance of keeping exterior moisture out while also being breathable enough to avoid interior moisture build up. They are also quite durable.

I would recommend these to anyone.

These Kamik boots seem as if they are perfect for my 3 years old- the inside is so soft, warm & fuzzy. Seems like they would be waterproof for our East Coast wet snows- however, I didn’t realize the sizing would be off- small by one size.

Took a chance with the size 8 (which is what size he wears) bc of the sale ($22) – but will have to return bc he actually needs a size 9 (that’s not available from REI- I did order from elsewhere and the size 9’s work well with winter socks) Would’ve been nice to know there is a full size discrepancy- as well as a $6 return shipping cost deducted from final return amount- so maybe these size 8’s will just be donated to our local ‘Baby Pantry Food/supply bank’ (as this winter is expected to be “unreasonably frigid & cold” in Virginia).

I’ve purchased these boots in several sizes for both my boys. They are wonderful for younger kids because of how easy they are to get on. They open wide so you don’t have to try to push their foot through a small opening.

I purchased other brands before these and they were so difficult to get on little feet! Love these and highly recommend.

I bought these last year for my toddler and was so happy with them! I bought them again for this winter. They are relatively light for a winter boot, warm, easy to wipe clean if it gets muddy but most importantly easy to slip his feet in and secure.

The price point is also good for the quality. Will buy again in future.

I got these for my mare who is recovering from her second hind limb torn manica surgery in two months. Her surgeon recommended them after the second surgery and I immediately bought a pair. Her left surgery was first and much more complicated.

We were left with some significant residual puffiness in her fetlock area which the vet felt would either never go down or take a long time. I started using these about a week ago and the swelling in her left has gone down faster in that time than four months in standing wraps.

It blows my mind how effective they are. The right hind didn’t have nearly as much post-op swelling but I’ve been using these to stay ahead of her healing. They’re a little difficult to get the hang of initially but once you figure out how to put them on, they’re much quicker than standing wraps.

I have a 15’1 mare with somewhat petite legs. I had to buy the 16 inch because that’s literally the only ones in stock and while they’re a bit too big, they still fit fine. I’m not sure the size smaller would’ve been much better.

I wish I’d bought these two months ago after her first surgery. They are a godsend.

Product is fabulous. I paid expedited shipping but smartpak was having trouble in their store room and they were 2 weeks late. The team helped me ship them to national competition in Montana. I didn’t get tonuse them for the 4 day haul up, but did get to use them at the show and on the way back.

I noticed a nice difference, as my horse seemed to like them and he didn’t stock up on the haul. Everyone who helped at smartpak was kind and thoughtful! Though I think they are priced for the name brand (and I would be interested to see how competitive brands like smartpaks answer to these operate) I feel like the ease of them made it worthwhile.

My mare has been getting stocked up in her stall overnight and I bought these to help. While they do their job OK, I’m really disappointed after washing them (following the recommendations). I found the pillow material to be extremely sensitive to the Velcro material attached to it and even when I washed the pillows separately they got damaged.

These photos are after one washing. I’m not sure how to clean them without damaging them besides hand washing, and given how dirty they get overnight that is not a feasible solution. Product is good as long as it doesn’t get dirty! They also are just a touch too wide and I need to overlap the bulky material to get a good fit.

I hope this doesn’t cause too much pressure on the front of the cannon bone. I’m trusting BoT to make a product that won’t cause more harm than good!.

These TUBEs are the most comfortable and best for skiing or biking in cold weather. They are warm but don’t make your face sweat. They are not too thin either that would make your face cold. The material stays nice after many washes.

I have tried other tubes but had to dispose of them after using the Blackstraps. I have a few Blackstrap facemasks and love them. I would highly recommend these.

This tube is excellent. As PNW skier (frankly I snowboard, but for all intents and purposes I’ll just say ski) this is the only tube/gaiter I use when skiing. This can be worn off mountain during cold weather as well, though personally I would go for a fleece gaiter due to comfort but for example when unstrapping and loading up the van to go back home it makes no difference.

If you buy it, you’re using it on every trip up.

It’s compact, soft, very warm, great at blocking the wind, and somehow they’ve nailed the fit. Just stretch enough. Not too loose; I can pull it over my mouth, or nose, or just my chin, and it STAYS! But it’s not too tight; there’s plenty of mobility and overall comfort of being warm without having a bulky scarf or loose fitting neck gaiter.

Highly recommend with any set up.

Patagonia quality as expected. Soft fleece feels great on my neck and face. I am looking forward to testing it with colder temperatures as winter sets in, however, the fleece is a nice weight so I expect it will well insulate from the cold.
