11 Best Cat Scratch Deterrent (2022 Updated)

My cat was all over it as I was unpacking it from the shipping box. He proceeded to spend the rest of the evening attempting to get the scratcher out of the box. He loves it. The cause of my mystification is two fold: The packaging indicates to remove the shrink wrap prior to use.

The scratcher was not shrink wrapped. I paid $12. 95 for the scratcher. I looked at the listing today (4 days after I ordered it) and the price is $9. 99. There is no indication the lower price is promotional.

What is the price supposed to be?.

I LOVE this scratcher, and so does my cat, Pumpkin! It’s so sturdy, she doesn’t tear through it like other ones I’ve tried, which means longer lasting fun for her AND less cardboard bits for me to clean up around the house.

The actual scratching insert comes out for easy cleaning, I usually just use the vacuum on it! I highly recommend this scratcher, don’t miss out!.

I wanted a scratcher that would fit inside a wooden scratcher-container-box that I have, and this appeared to have more or less the proper dimensions and wasn’t crazily expensive. However, the quality was terrible! Although Chewy doesn’t list the dimensions, I found the dimensions on another site that had the exact same product, and the actual scratcher is a good 1.

5″ shorter and 1″ narrower than the listed dimensions— Maybe the size listing on the other site wasn’t correct, but even if I ignore the smaller-then-expected size, it’s not a good product. The scratcher itself is very thin, and flimsy—mine actually arrived with 3 of the horizontal cardboard layers separated from the rest of the scratcher, straight out of the box.

The only good thing I can say about this product is that the cardboard is of the softer type that my cats like sinking their claws into—-the scratch pad that came with the wooden enclosure box is of the super-long-lasting type—-which is great, but it’s also so hard that my cats don’t enjoy scratching on it! I’ll be trying another brand next time to try to find a happy medium between acceptably scratch-able cardboard and acceptable quality.

I will not be purchasing this brand again.

My kitty is a little strange. She was clawing the rug, so I bought this for her. She loves her vertical scratcher, so I thought she’d like this flat one too. She has used it for scratching a little, but mostly she lounges and naps on it.

and by the way, it’s right next to her new bed! It’s a good product for normal cats–if they exist!.

My cats love these. We place them around the house and they use these instead of the furniture.

Sturdy enough and long enough for my XL kitty. I was afraid it would be too small because the former box that I used was an inch larger in width and length, but she fits! She sleeps on too.

It was very easy to put together and my cat hopped inside before I even got the chance to clean up from putting it together. It’s very sturdy and I am very pleased with this purchase. For the price, I’m hoping that it last a little while.

If I am able to get some good use out of it or shall I say if my cat doesn’t destroy it immediately before having to replace then I will definitely be buying again. It’s the perfect little hide away/scratching pad for him.

Very pleased so far. will update on its use and durability after some use.

Holds up well (>1 year use by 14 pound cat). Favored by my cat to traverse across the room without touching the floor, and to side-swipe unsuspecting passerby’s feet. Excellent for controlled steps from high surfaces like beds and the tops of furniture.

I was expecting something that could work for a coffee table or side table. This scratcher does not come assembled. The assembling instructions are confusing. Furthermore, my adult cat 10-11lbs does not fit inside.

She walks in barely has space to turn and jumps out because it is so cramped. Disappointed. I like that it is made with recycled materials but it’s not big enough and the walls come undone if the cat jumps at the top.

I was so disappointed when I opened this! It is narrower than advertised AND the cardboard around the ends takes about 2″ off the length. If you try to take the ends off. the whole box falls apart. Super poor quality and it was not inexpensive.

My very first ‘Chewy fail’ ever. I would not have given this item ‘one star’ except I couldn’t submit my review unless I did. :(.

I have a fussy cat who prefers my doorway trim to most scratch posts/pads. She doesn’t like wedges or waves, oddly she doesn’t like standing ones (though the door jambs suit her just fine) and she won’t mess with narrow ones she can’t sprawl out over.

This is the perfect width and length to her liking. I barely got the saran wrap off before she was rubbing on it and pawing it out of my hands. She’ll run over to it and claw away for mins before laying on it for hours.

She loved the included pack of catnip you can pour on it. Saving my door jambs for now, and saving my pockets as it’s much cheaper than the others of same width.

Having had an expensive carpet covered scratching ‘tower’ that was well used by one of our cats, Tigger, but another, Sara, preferred one of our lounge chairs or the solid maple dining chairs. We tried all sorts of things to dissuade Sara including the cardboard scratcher.

She did use it but the damage was done. Tigger and Sara are both gone now and we only have Geordi. He has never scratched any furniture and was not interested in the tower but he is obsessed with the cardboard scratcher.

He really punishes them and he loves to sit and sleep on them. I buy 5 at a time because he goes through them so quickly.

We adopted a small cat several weeks ago and she has begun to scratch on the rug in “her room”. Since I have never needed anything with cats on the past I wasn’t sure what to get. I thought since she was using the rug a pad seemed like the best to try.

But I didn’t want to spend a lot on something that might not work so I went with this. I’m so glad I did! I put the catnip on it, put it done and called her over. Literally, within 2 minutes, she went from smelling it, to laying on it, to rolling on it, to scratching it.

I was quite disappointed upon receiving the 2 cat scratcher corrugated pads ordered, they were narrow even though the description said wide which they definitely were not. I should have paid more attention to the measurements given for the wide pad instead of just the description of wide.

Wide in the past meant the wide size which is what I always ordered. I won’t purchase them again; I wish I had a kitten that could use these, they are a perfect size for a kitten, but I don’t have any kittens.

I think my large adult cats would be uncomfortable using them so guess I will donate them.

I tried using sisal mats, which cats are supposedly happy to use for sharpening their claws. My cat ignored them completely, and scratched on the rugs NEXT TO the sisal mats. Nothing would deter her.

As luck would have it, Chewy’s cat scratcher mats with catnip solved the problem. I bought four of them and placed them in various places around the house. My cat took to them like it was Christmas morning, and she uses those mats several times a day.

Bottom line: Over the course of two months not once has Charlotte sharpened her claws on my rugs.

We were delighted to find a scratcher made of all recycled materials. Cats being cats, one of our cats loves this (with or without catnip) and the other can’t be bothered. But it’s affordable and sustainable, especially since it’s reversible.

The cardboard bottom can slide, so it may not work as well on very smooth surfaces unless you attach something to the bottom.

So my cat tends to destroy traditional scratchers quickly. Not just because she is a big girl, but she is very vivacious in her clawing. These are great because she gets in her scratch fix and they are easy to replace/recycle.

They also are double sided which also is a life saver when they wear down. They also have been good at helping her shed old claws/nails which has helped with nail management. Only draw back is you may have some cardboard bits on the ground around the scratcher but it definitely is worth it.

Within minutes of setting this seat up, our cat was a fan. The cardboard was a little wigglier than I expected but that’s not a downside, just unexpected. I love that the bed is a replaceable cardboard because our cat isn’t a fan of soft surfaces (he brings his own fluff around with him) and absolutely loves scratching surfaces.

I’m still keeping it lower for now in case it falls but I’m really impressed with how well it stuck to begin with. If your kitty loves being tall and scratching cardboard, this is definitely worth trying out!.

The suction cups seem to work and hold so far. But frankly I think I have better scratchers around the house. My cats actually get very physical when scratching so that’s something that makes me hesitant about this.

The sill is loose just sitting on the metal frame so I can see my cats moving it all about if they really started scratching it like they do other scratchers. Plus I’m not too sure how this will handle my cats having to jump up onto it to use.

It is somewhat unnoticeable in the product photo with the darkish tortoiseshell cat. But the side support arms don’t leave much room to access this sill from either side. So my cats really have to jump up onto it from the front OR I have to make sure there is some sort of “steps” leading right up to it.

The “steps” being a table top or other furniture. That is just not going to work very well for me. I do have a cabinet below it but doesn’t come up very close to it so it means the cats have to jump onto it to access the perch.

Which I’m hesitant about it holding. I also doubt, due to narrowness on sides with support arms, my cats would jump on it from the side. One cat didn’t seem to mind it and even scratched a bit. However I actually placed her on it to get her familiar with it.

But not sure she will go out of her way to jump up on it. I think the support arms just don’t leave a lot of room around the cardboard perch itself. And it wasn’t quick and easy install as the cardboard perch is loose and trying to keep it in place and level while dealing with the suction cups was tricky.

One of Wally’s established “safe places” is another K&H product, a double decker window penthouse. I decided to try this for my bedroom window, which gets more sunlight. I specifically chose this one because (1) it can fold up, so as not to protrude from the drapes when potential suitors come over (trying to balance super commitment to Walt’s well being with fear of getting labeled Eleanor Abernathy JD MD from the Simpsons) and (2) it is scratch-friendly, so Walt please stop going after the vanity chair.

I haven’t had a potential suitor over, so it has remained in a non-upright position since installation and Walter still scratches my vanity chair. HOWEVER, he really, really likes it and has vacated the window penthouse.

Walter is a big boy, 15. 23 oz as of date of review. The suction cups are solid and there’s enough surface area to support all of Walter’s surface area. I honestly am going to purchase another one to add above and opposite to the first one—so that Walt will have jungle gym with a view and choice of altitude in his tanning bed.

I have two half grown kittens that are tearing my house apart, climbing curtains, etc. I figured I was probably throwing money away buying a piece of cardboard, but surprise! They both love this thing & use it continually for a scratching post.

Also, love take turns laying on it & enjoying the catnip its suppose to be infused with. The small “play” attachment, which was just plain cardboard with two “wheels” disappeared under my furniture quickly, & haven’t been seen since, but that is pretty minor.

I’ve paid a lot more money for scratching posts, beds, toys, etc. to help entertain my housecats & keep them from tearing up my furniture, but this really works! Who knew a piece of catnip-infused cardboard was the best buy of my life with cats.

I barely got this out of the box! Kitty was so excited. I had to go into another room to set it up! It didn’t take long, super easy set up. When she finally got to scratch and play, she was in heaven.

She rolled around and sniffed (it has catnip infused) and played for a long time. I’m fairly certain she drooled on it just a little bit. It’s sturdy for cardboard. It has a nice compact design too. My cat isn’t overweight, but I imagine it would be good for heavier cats that need stimulation as well.

Miss Melly and myself recommend Petlinks Scratcher’s Choice Corrugate.

She wouldn’t engage with the scratched while in its box with extension of cardboard toys. When I disobeyed directions and opted to lift the scratcher out of its holder, she used it as she has other similar scratchers.

This one is significantly more expensive than similar companies’ models. My hope is it will last longer. Time will tell. Other more playful cats might love the cardboard toy extension. Mine isn’t interested.

I have two large cats. I’ve always bought the LARGE/WIDE SCRATCH BOARDS for them Chewy advertises theirs as LARGE/WIDE, but they are actually the smallest ones on the market. I have complained to Chewy about this and they sent a replacement (TWICE) but they are ALL THE SMALL ONES.

Very disappointed and wish they would change the description to TINY SCRATCHER, but they never will.

We have two of these, because Spike loves them so much! We put them with the curved part on the bottom so he can run up, scratch the side, then jump on top and scratch again. So much enthusiasm from a kitty who is almost 18 years old! His life is improved, honestly, from this product.

Those with structural complaints might try setting it against something solid, either a wall or a piece of furniture.

I have 5 cats and this is my THIRD hammock purchase. When I buy items for them, I always buy hoping that most of them will like it. My youngest, who is almost 4, took this hammock for herself and no other cats will go near it.

The first one she had, she played too rough one day and jumped off a table and right onto it, which busted the hammock. She is currently on her second one but it’s days are numbered, so I went ahead and purchased this third one expecting to use it any day.

I don’t care what the kitties like or how much it costs. as long as they LOVE it, then I’ll keep buying it!.

My cat Lucy likes cat hammocks. They last over a year. She likes to lounge on them. Just bought 2. I find they are two small. Lucy overflows width an height. She looks like a circus act. She probably has been through 6 hammocks.

The last was larger and a perfect size. I would like one like that. I am not sure where I have gotten the larger ones. I thought Chewy. Great concept ,Gbj.
