20 Best Centipede Grass Fertilizer (2022 Updated)

When I was 18 or 19 I lived in a house with a neglected lawn and for some reason decided to try this. Yard was full of clover, dandelions, and other weeds. Had large area bare spots of N. C. red clay around trees.

I put it down heavy just once and it killed off about every weed. Big patches of weeds became bare spots then the grass filled in and thickened, turned a nice darker green. Grass started spreading to the red dirt spots.

Neighbor across the road could tell a difference from her house a good distance back from the road away from ours and asked me “what did you do to your yard? It looks good”. I’d recommend putting it down a bit heavier than instructed if you have a serious weed problem as long as it won’t run into a creek or other water source.

Be ready to mow the yard because it will make your grass grow.

Have had good results with Scotts Crabgrass Preventer. Its finer texture seems to provide more even application compared to the larger granules in other brands. It claims to be “season-long” protection vs.

3-4 months as mentioned by some competitors. I just applied it a few days ago, so only time will tell if the current product works as well at preventing crabgrass as it has in the past for me. My frustration with the product solely lies with BJ’s.

I discovered that a special/reduced price on the website was only for online orders. In- store pricing was $5 higher. NO WHERE WAS THAT MENTIONED in the online posting. I had to place an online order, then return to do a store pickup.

I sprayed more than half of the solution about 5 days ago. Looks like the grass is changing from yellow to green. I wish there was more in the bottle- I have a large space to cover. Definitely recommend.

My centipede starts to grow and a late spring freeze knocks it back. So it goes into summer with yellow areas and large yellow spots. The more normal green/yellow has been restored in 24 hours, not perfect but more than good enough to keep the HOA off my back.

Booster has helped very much. (what has not worked) usual fertilizer, liquid iron, lime, re-sodding in spots, top soil,.

After scrolling through the aisles and buying countless products, I finally found a product that works. My lawn was embarrassing, bright yellow! I applied this product on a Saturday morning, by Tuesday, my gosh, the difference, green!!! Finally a nice sight as I pull into my driveway!.

Nothing disagreeable about the smell, works well for encouraging healthy green growth. My experience is that it may indeed discourage deer. Can’t swear it’s true, but there are a lot of deer in my immediate area.

They randomly eat whatever isn’t fenced but don’t seem to touch things that have Milorganite scattered around. I use light feedings more frequently. Would give 5 stars except for my concern for what household chemicals could have been dumped down drains.

Maybe my thought is outdated but just the same, I don’t use it directly on my vegetable garden. Instead, I use it on the extended field/yard and use the cuttings for compost and mulch. The Milorganite does a good job keeping the field productive.

I’ve been lawn guy for more than 45+ years. I’m passionate about how my lawn looks. Always had one the best, if not THE best, looking lawn in the neighborhoods I’ve lived. Read all the rave reviews about Milorganite, so a couple of months ago I thought I’d give it a try.

My lawn is about 2,500 sq. ft. Applied nearly a full bag with my hand spreader, and waited to see the lush green appear. Didn’t happen. Only a minor change. Then the record breaking heat came in brutally.

High nineties and triple digits every day and has not let up. Everyone knows a healthy, nourished lawn will withstand that kind of weather much better than a weak lawn. Then the brown areas began to appear even with stepping up watering.

I even resorted to supplemental hand watering those areas. Still looked pretty bad in many areas and pale green. Tried applying a little more Milorganite and watered well every morning. No change. My lawn was weak, malnourished, and suffering from the heat.

So, I went a bought a bag of my old favorite, Scotts Turf Builder All-In-One Lawn Food and applied it. A week and half later, my lawn is thick, lush, and deep green again, and the brown areas are coming back to life and looking good again.

I have even cut back on the watering and it’s still looking like it should. Healthy, deep green, nourished and strong. So, sorry Milorganite. You’re just weren’t up to the task nor my standards. Oh, BTW, your dark black color makes it impossible to see where it’s going when applying by hand spreader!.

I ordered this bag of Milorganite in the Eufaula, Ala store. It was shipped to me directly with no shipping charge. This is my second bag of Milorganite. I am using it as recommended to me by Pike’s Nursery staff in Marietta, Ga as an effective deer deterrent.

I spread the first bag about a month ago around azaleas and camellias, which have been heavily hit by the deer, this past winter. I notice my roses and daylilies, which were also being eaten, are now growing normally.

The azaleas are putting out new growth. I hope Milorganite is repelling deer, but also realize the deer have new spring growth to eat in the woods. In any case my friend has been using Milorganite for years on his lawn with great results on his grass.

Last year he didn’t use it and they had a lot of deer damage in the yard. They hadn’t put the two together. I have high hopes.

Second season using their 2 step subscription program ( spring/fall) My lawn was in rough shape after the 2020 drought. Applied the Spring treatment in 2021. and we had a record rainfall. so I had very green grass that grew very fast.

But I had much less crabgrass and weeds. I then applied the Fall treatment. This spring( 2022), my lawn came in and greened up really fast. with very few danidlions. Applied the Spring treatment. the few weeds I had have disappeared.

and the lawn has stayed green through some dry spells. So far, so good. the best fertilizer I’ve ever used. Although. that darn grass does grow faster! LOL.

This GreenView Fairway Formula Spring Fertilizer with Crabgrass Preventer works great. It is a good quality lawn fertilizer. It made the lawn greener and thicker. My yard needed help and I have been impressed with how much and how quickly this has helped it.

I love that it has the crabgrass preventer in it, so I don’t have to use different products. It prevents crabgrass for 120 days, and provides slow release nitrogen for extended feeding up to 12 weeks.

It was very easy to use too. I would definitely recommend it.

This product worked really well on my weeds killing the dandelions and eliminating the patches of clover I had. I haven’t treated my lawn in a few years so the weeds were very noticeable. I put this product down on a wet lawn and watched it work.

The next day I could see that it was working on the weeds, not just the dandelions and clover, but the other stuff too. It rained two days after I applied the weed & feed and that’s when I really noticed my lawn start to green up also.

Overall, very happy with this product and will buy again for next year.

My house is in a new build subdivision and I have right at a half acre. Like most subdivisions the land is old pasture field and had tons of weeds. The builders only sod about 50 feet and the rest they lay seed and straw.

They did not treat the soil to my knowledge before laying sod. We closed in November of 2020 so the next spring our yard was basically a weed field. So we turned to tru green’ our first mistake. Their weed and feed is an awful mixture, it really did not work as they described and we just had a bad experience.

So fall of 2021 I decided to take care of the lawn myself. I bought the bio advanced weed and feed and laid the first application and by mid October our grass looked great. So this spring I have used it again and our grass is healthy and very few weeds.

I just pull them up if I notice them. I will apply two yearly from hear on out. It takes about 5 of the big bags to do the whole lawn. Takes care of crabgrass and dandelions, basically any standard pasture weed.

I will definitely recommend to anyone looking to stop using lawn care services that charge a fortune for low range results. Our grass is green and healthy and one of the best in the neighborhood.

We applied the product and watered it in gently for two days following application. At the time of application, the lawn was a bit stressed in areas due to sustained dry days with no watering. The lawn had several spots of crabgrass emerging and starting to grow rapidly.

There were some, but minimal weeds present. Within four weeks the lawn had greened up nicely and began to fill in the stressed spots. There was visible evidence the crabgrass was starting to struggle with its growth.

The weeds that were present were either gone or showed signs of struggling. At observation seven weeks after application the crabgrass had completely died off, weeds were not evident, the lawn had thickened up and was a beautiful green.

We are thoroughly satisfied with the benefits that this product had promised and has now delivered. The one negative feedback would be the odor. Following application, it was difficult to have windows open in the cottage, sit on the patio, or spend time in the yard for at least a week due to the strong odor of the product.

I am giving my review for the 5 in 1 weed and feed I received. I had to put it down a little late in the season because I had already put down a fertilizer prior to hearing about this. It seemed to kill all of the weeds except the ivy that I have.

I don’t blame the product as nothing seems to get rid of ivy so I didn’t expect it to. We had a bad drought this year and I do not have lawn sprinklers for watering. So I didn’t see much difference in how thick the grass got.

I suspect it is still in shock from the unusual summer we had. I also suspect that my soil may be acidic and in need of some lime which would have helped the fertilizer work better. Overall I think it would have worked better if I could have waited a couple more weeks before reviewing and was able to put it down earlier in the season.

I have had luck with Bayer products in the past and would still give this a shot next year. I think this year’s circumstances were unfair to the product. being tested. An update to this review: after a few more weeks my lawn looks nice and green, supporting my previous claim about it being in shock from the drought.

The ad came around so I got a free sample off the website. I just started seedlings so followed the instruction and add some to my young starter. Within 2 days, I saw significant growth; tomatoes grow thicker stems on some plants and more true leaves on the other.

Onion and leeks grow thicker stems as well. Quite impressed so far. I will update reviews when I start fertilize the more mature plant. So far, it convinced me enough to go for it this year. Very good product.

As it pointed out, plants reacted fast on this feed.

For several years I have been spraying liquid humic acid on my yard. I love how humic acid is helping to amend my soil. In the attached soil probe picture you can see how the top three inches of my clay soil is becoming darker and much more porous.

Spraying takes a fair amount of time. I was able to apply the entire bag of HumiChar in about twenty minutes including washing my spreader. Purchasing a 2 gallon (256 oz. ) container of humic acid cost approximately $66.

The liquid I used was 12% humic acid or 30. 72 oz. of humic acid. So the liquid humic acid cost approximately $2. 15 per liquid oz. The HumiChar on the other hand costs approximately $93 for a 40 lb.

bag and at 30% humic acid would mean that each bag contains 12 lbs. of humic acid or $2. 00 per dry oz. Now here is where the savings come in. You are getting all of the biochar (about 17 lbs. ) as a bonus.

Easier to spread and cost effective. I will be using HumiChar from now on.

I tried this on a lark and boy was I surprised! It helped my yard become the envy of the neighborhood! Thick grass with very few weeds left (you can’t kill all the weeds). I put it on my lawn in the late spring and early fall and it has done wonderfully.

I’ve been looking for a weed and feed for my St. Augustine grass that really works well. I wasn’t very optimistic for this product. When I used it my lawn did a complete turn around for the better! Deep green color, great root growth, lasts for three months and my lawn is the best in the neighborhood.

Will be purchasing more in the near future.

Applied to Zoysia grass. Grass looks incredibly better in 24 hours. Wow. Totally impressed.

IšverstiShow in original languageI got this Greenview Fall Lawn Food to put on my (rather small) lawn. You do have to apply it with a drop spreader so that you don’t end up with too much in one place.

I also got it more at the beginning of spring versus the beginning of fall. I live in Michigan so our weather is pretty crazy. It does work really well as long as you follow directions. You’re going to want to apply it to a dry lawn, on a nice day (thing 60 degrees or more), and water well for a few days at least (don’t overwater though).

Applying in fall would certainly have made it easier. As we are approaching the middle of spring here, I can already see my lawn starting to look more lush and green. I’m so excited to see how it looks as summer comes!.

IšverstiShow in original languageThe fertilizer is easy to spread. Directions are clear and helpful. It’s tough to tell year to year how well the product works. If nothing else, all else being equal, I think the grass feels a bit more robust this Spring than previous springs.

So maybe chalk that up to the mix? Definitely follow the spreading instructions. A little goes a long ways. I did like the weight of the mix – it was easy to apply but didn’t blow around in high winds.

It appeared to find it’s way to the earth well. All in all, I’m fairly pleased.

IšverstiShow in original languageI got this to try on an area of my yard that we are having problems with. The area was dug up 2 summers ago. We planted new grass there but it hasn’t done very well and gets burned up by the sun very easily.

I went out and applied this to a portion of that area right before it rained. I went back out to check on it about a week later. The grass in that area did have a darker color to. It seems like it’s going to help my grass.

The lawn food is kind of pellatized. It was easy to spread ( I just put it in a bucket and scooped it out with a cup). I didn’t notice any kind of smell to it when I was spreading it. I plan on putting this on the rest of the yard this weekend!.

This is a top of the line total lawn fertilizer. I strongly recommend this product. The smaller particle size dissolved quickly, and spreads more evenly. It kept my lawn green for over a month. Excellent complete fertilizer.

I have been using PGF now for a little over two years and have found it to be an outstanding product for my Bermuda grass. I have used several different products over the years but none has preformed as well as PGF.

Even now in the middle of December in central Florida my grass is still green while all my neighbors is brown.

I purchased four bags of 16-4-8. I was only able to spread 1 of the 4 initially. The other three were very lumpy and so wet that it stuck together would not fall thru the spreader opening. I broke up the lumps and split a bag into two boxes hoping it would dry enough to spread.

Finally I was able to spread a second bag. I tried a third bag after working on the lumps for 20 minutes. It still would not fall thru the spreader opening even after I opened the opening to ten which is the widest opening.

I should be set on seven. I am at a lose as to what to do. I will not buy fertilizer here again.

The fertilizer was excellent. I fertilized established grass it worked excellent. The pellets never clumped and it made a great difference immediately in the grass growth snd color. Bermuda seed: I planted this in bare spots and I am yet to see a sprig of grass in over a month.

Love the fertilizer, but I am really disappointed in the seed. I had high hopes. Phil Maples, Louisiana.

The delivery was prompt but unfortunately, the seeds are bagged in paperbags. We had a downpour on the delivery day and the wet paperbags simply tore open. We lost close to 2 bags of seed in total. so would suggest more durable bags.

The verdict is still our on the seed growth, but it looks optimistic at this time.

We had trees cut down in the front yard and some bare spots in the backyard from where the dogs did their thing and this helped fill them spots in. We raked the dirt, sprinkled some Pennington TifBlair Centipede & Mulch, raked it in and topped it with pine straw.

We watered ours daily and the seedlings started showing in 1 1/2-2 weeks. The ones in the backyard did not do as well although some sprouted, but I think it’s more of human error because I DID NOT water it as much as I should.

We do not have a working sprinkle system in the backyard either. But I do recommend this product if you need to fix you have bare spots in your yard. Also I wanna add that you need to check your weather and make sure there’s no rain on the days you are planning to put this on the ground so you dont waste it.

We applied Turf Nurture Natural Base Lawn Fertilizer about 3 weeks ago and are finally starting to see a difference in our lawn! Applying Turf Nurture Lawn Fertilizer was very easy. The application directions were easy to read and follow.

I can appreciate the label giving specific lbs. per sq. ft. based off of several different typical spreaders. This made it very easy to set our spreader setting correctly. Turf Nurture Fertilizer was easy to spread and absorbed fairly quickly after the application.

We love that Turf Nurture is supplied with natural and organic nutrients that are better for the environment compared to other brands. This helps us feel as we are doing what is best for all of the kids and pets we have running through our yard daily.

After 3 weeks of our first application, we are starting to notice that our grass is coming in greener and thicker. We have had a slower start to our growing season because VA temps have been lower than normal for this time of year.

But we are starting to see the spring growth and can’t wait to see how healthy our lawn will look over the next few weeks! We plan on using Turf Nurture Natural Base Lawn Fertilizer every 3-4 months throughout the rest of year.

I have no doubt that our lawn will stand out in our neighborhood as one of the healthiest and BEST looking lawns!.

Turf Nurture natural base lane fertilizer works but takes sometime. I first tried a spot with out aerating my lawn, that didn’t seem to show results. Which it does suggest to aerate your lawn. When I did any missing patched areas that I aerated.

My lawn started to show some new growth in the bald spots. What I love about this product is that you can apply it spring,summer or fall. That way I can get a head start on keeping a healthy lawn. You definitely want to water it the first time applied because it will take longer to show any kind of difference.

I was sure to try a spot that I aerated but didn’t water. If you follow exactly what the directions say, it makes the whole process a breeze and not too much fuss. Can’t wait to see my lawn in several weeks to see it to it’s full potential.

This really works. Used it a couple of times and spring-early summer seems to work best (better than fall application in my opinion). Very easy to apply, no odors, no fuss. It is best to time it so it rains afterwords; this way there is no need to water it in and granules do not get blown around.

Like this product a lot and it does help our lawn to grow thick and vibrant. We do not even bother aerating anymore; just a couple of treatments and grass starts looking healthy and downright luxurious.

I do enjoy gardening, but really do not like to spend too much effort on the lawn. So as long as it is passably thick and green – it’s enough for me. Excellent treatment and great value. Highly recommend.

Since we moved to a new house, this is our first time experiencing patchy spots around our lawn where grass doesn’t grow. Not being familiar with a lot of grass seed brands or planting grass seeds, I may have selected the wrong type of seed for our soil and issues.

However we are still excited to give Pennington Centipede Grass Seed a try since this grass is great for low maintenance and excels in full sunlight, so hopefully see some results soon! The directions were easy to read and understand with only 4 steps and pictures to indicate what they meant.

If there’s still any doubt, Pennington even has video tutorials on YouTube to help further. One five-pound bag covers around 2000 square feet, so it’s a very good value, too. We are looking into trying other seeds from Pennington like the Smart Seed Sun Shade Grass as well and eventually fill in the bare spots under our trees as well.

Had minimal detectable effect [i. e. browning] after two weeks, and then only on fine spiral-bur clover. Had no detectable effect whatsoever on all other broad-leaf weeds like Dandelions. Just followed up today with spray on weed killer.

Over the years I’ve found most any brand of weed and feed nearly useless on lawn weeds in Central CA, valleys or coastline. You must fertilize, then spray for weeds separately to have any significant effect.

Lawn green-up was also minimal after two weeks.

Comparing this to Scotts Turf builder: Ingredients are similar N/P/K is 29-0-4 compared to Turf builder’s 32-0-4 It costs a fair amount less As Scott’s says; their pellets are all in one. I can see that as a potential benefit as their fertilizer will be a 32-0-4 mix everywhere it is spread.

The Ace brand does have separate pellets, so if they are not evenly mixed, it will not be a 29-0-4 mix everywhere it is spread. BUT to my eye, it was evenly mixed. AND the pellets did not stick together like what happens with Scott’s fertilizers I have used.

Another reviewer complained that it did not work well with his Scott’s drop spreader. For my Scott’s hand held broadcast spreader, the fact that the pellets did not stick together made it work better than Scott’s fertilizers for my spreader.

I am going to stick with this.

Usually, I buy the Scotts 4 step program, but, this year I decided to try the ACE brand since it was cheaper. My Review isn’t really based on the effectiveness of the product as that is yet to be seen, but, more about the application.

I have a Scott Elite spreader that is 1 year old. The step 1/2/3 use 3. 5 for spreader settings. I didn’t change this when adding the ACE crabgrass and very little was coming out. The yellow crystals appear quite larger than Scotts.

The bag says to use setting 4, but, that was even low. I ended up bumping up to 4. 5 to get correct distribution. So word of caution is to increase your number if coming from Scotts.

This product gives you very thick healthy grass choking out most weeds. I have tried other products and keep coming back to this one. It has no weed killers and pets can enter after using. It is safe for the environment.

A great alternative if you don’t want to use chemicals on your lawn! For dandelion control I use IronX. It works great!.
