20 Best Cfexpress Card Reader (2022 Updated)

Five stars. It does its job. It’s fast, the card fits in the slot. What else is there to say? But here’s what really makes it five stars for me: it is heavy. It looks like a cheap piece of plastic, like anything else, but when you hold it in your hand, you can FEEL it.

I honestly wondered if SanDisk just put a weight inside of it to make it heavier. You know how things feel cheap and untrustworthy if they are TOO lightweight? I TRUST this card reader COMPLETELY. This may sound like a weird review, but seriously, it makes a big difference.

From an ACTUAL functionality standpoint, and not just psychological satisfaction, the weight also matters because it helps keep the reader in one place on your desk and not skidding around all over the place every time you bump the wire or adjust your computer screen.

The supplied cable is compatible with my Windows PC. Importing photos to Lightroom works flawlessly. The CFexpress Type B card inserts into the reader with a reassuring click and ejects with a simple press to release from the reader.

The transfer runs cool to the touch.

One might assume that all card readers are largely the same. This is true to a point, but for CFexpress Type B cards, heat can be a limiting factor. This reader does indeed stay cool, even after fairly extensive downloading.

It also looks great on my desk!.

Transferring my videos becomes very fast.

Very bad experience. I consider seriously to move away from WD-SanDisk for my photo and video works. I am currently replacing my cards by SONY cards and now, I am looking for a new functional card reader.

Love this card reader because it supports faster speeds than the previous version, even in a PC that doesn’t supports those speeds. My workstation only supports Type-C USB 3. 2 Gen2 not the maximum speed of 20 Gb/s USB 3.

2 Gen 2×2 standard. I have the previous version but I decided to get the newest one for traveling with it. I was curious about the claims of faster transfer so I copied the same file from my card to my SSD.

In theory, I should not see any difference since my computer doesn’t have USB 3. 2 Gen 2X2. I was shocked when I saw that the same file of 200 GB was copied on half the time it took with the previous version (Angelbrid CFexpress Type B Mark I) Try it for yourself.

The build quality and performance of this reader is top notch. Testing had it delivering full-rated performance (1734MB/s read, 1462MB/s write) to/from a Sony TOUGH 128GB card consistently. One caveat, though, is that according to Angelbird support, that level of performance is NOT possible with their own cards.

Specifically, at least, with the AV Pro 1TB MK2 card, where performance is limited to less than half that read (712MB/s) and much lower on write (934MB/s. ) To obtain better performance with Angelbird’s own cards requires a Thunderbolt card reader (per their support.

) This is still my go-to reader without question, just not when using Angelbird’s cards.

This reader runs incredibly hot, too hot to touch while it’s transferring files. Labels on my cards melt and have caused cards to jam in the reader, particularly SDX cards. Pulling out jammed cards occasionally pulls off the whole front section of the reader.

It can be popped back on but this is not ideal. The dual slot interface is poorly thought-out. This should be two slots, not one gaping hole. Contrary to what another review claimed, this reader does work with Big Sur.

However, when the reader is hot, the card/reader will sometimes fail to eject via the operating system / transfer utility (I’m using Catalyst Browse). Yes, it does transfer files, quickly, so it’s not a complete fail, but it could be better.

I feel like 4 and 5 star reviews are for hyperbole products that go WAY beyond their intended function. But alas, this lowly pricey card reader for insanely pricey memory cards functions fine. It does NOT make my coffee.

The reader is of great quality. Sturdy metal body quite heavy in the hand and comes with both usb-c and usb-a cables. The only reason I rate 4 stars to it is that it’s quite expensive compared to other type of readers of alternative brands, and that there isnt any alternative yet as this is the only reader that work with the CF type A cards that the sony a7s3 use.

Sony takes advantage on this and charges you $$$ for their cards and reader. Surely in the future they’ll go down in price when ProGrade and Lexar get their cards out in the market. Though I must say that the build quality is 10/10.

Hi. This is good product and worked for what I needed it for: Transferring images from my XQD card to my iPad Pro into Lightroom mobile. This is accomplished via USB-C. One thing I noticed is I had to connect directly to the USB-C port on the iPad.

I could not connect via the port on the Magic keyboard. Transfer is fast as expected with XOD. There are probably other manufacturers that do the same thing, but I went with SONY since I use the SONY XQD card which are equally reliable.

Other benefit: Much easier to use than connect directly to your camera. Transfers with the camera drain your battery in a quick manner and are slow.

I didn’t want to buy this one because it’s the most expensive CFE reader I’ve seen, but. I tried this one and three other brands of CFExpress card readers. This is the best of all of them. CFExpress cards are notorious for getting hot.

A Sandisk 128GB CFE card inserted in this reader would get up to an internal temperature of 136 deg. F at idle (data was read from the card with Crystal DiskInfo). The other card readers had lousy heat dissipation and got much hotter (bad for the card).

At idle one of the other readers had the internal temperature as high as 172 deg. F. When writing data to the cards, the same reader that idled at 172 got hotter and automatically throttled its speed down to a useless 28 MB/s.

This Sony reader never got hotter than 140 deg. F when writing a full 115+ GB of data to the card. It also has the benefit of being able to read XQD cards (which I also have). The other three readers I tried ONLY read CFE.

I tested the reader with Crystal DiskMark and the same Sandisk 128GB CFE card and got a very respectable read speed of 766MB/s. I’m only giving it 4 stars because I think it’s very overpriced at $99.

When I purchased my z7II I noticed that it could work with it the faster CF express cards. These look just like the XQD cards that I’d been using. I initially thought that the CF express cards could be read using my Sony XQD/SD reader, but quickly realized that this didn’t work when my camera arrived.

Then, after some research, I learned that the CF express cards are quite different , though similar externally to the XQD cards I had for my D850. I Then ordered this CF express/XQD reader and it works well for both XQD and CF express cards.

I did leave a CF express card overnight in the reader once and the card was quite warm, so I’m glad the reader has ventilation ports for cooling. This device has worked very well. My only wish would be that it would also read SD cards since my camera has both SD and XQD slots which requires separate reading devices.

Please be aware, that the Sony XQD/SD reader won’t read CF express as well, even though the XQD slot fits the CF express cards. Be sure any reader you get for CF express isn’t just an XQD reader.

So, I also have a couple copies of Delkin’s other reader, the DDREADER-54. That reader is almost the same except it only reads CFexpress cards, where this one (DDREADER-56) also reads SD cards. I have tested this several times just to make sure, but this reader transfers files slower than the only-CFexpress-reader does, by about 200 MB/second.

It may not matter to you, but when offloading 200-300 GB of photos and video the extra time really adds up. Same card, same USB-C 3. 2 Gen 2 port, this reader is just slower. Honestly, unless you really need the SD reader and can’t connect your camera or whatever device to your computer via USB already, I’d recommend the cheaper DDREADER-54 with the came metal housing as this one but faster speeds.

I thought this would be nice so that I could easily clear JPG backups of only certain shoots from my SD card after copying and backing up RAWs off the CFexpress, but I’m not saving any time with this.

I’ve run some tests and determined there is an issue with Delkin’s card reader, model DDREADER-56. I own both of the Delkin CF Express Type B card readers; one reader has a SD V90 card slot (i. e. , model DDREADER-56) and one does not (i.

e. , model DDREADER-54). When copying files from my 512GB Delkin Black CF Express Type B card to my internal Samsung 980 Pro PCIx4 M. 2. SSD using Model DDREADER-54 with both the USB-Type C and the USB 3.

2 Gen 2 connections, I achieved write speeds of 800 MB/second, for each connection. When performing the same tests with Model DDREADER-56, I only achieved write speeds up to 471 MB/second for each connection.

Note: In all of my tests, I copied the exact same files from my Delkin Black CF Express Type B card to my Samsung 980 Pro M. 2. SSD and then deleted the files from the Samsung 980 Pro M. 2. SSD after each test run.

Cool ! Needed to extract cf express ! Fast too. But some uhs cards can’t be read on it. Idk why. Most would but some won’t (I don’t have the brands in mind) maybe due to the age of the card

Direct na ontvangst van de MRW-G1 de inhoud van de CFexpress kaart in een map op mijn pc gezet. Dat waren er een paar honderd, en dat ging in een razend tempo. De naamgeving is dan een dingetje, want de EOS Utility maakt een bestandsnaam met datum en volgnummer, afhankelijk van hoe je dat instelt, maar op de geheugenkaart staat iets heel anders, even uitzoeken dus.

Ik heb daarna de CFexpress kaart in de EOS R5 met een Low level format geformatteerd, en deze werkt nu al weken weer normaal. Kopiëren met de MRW-G1 via USB C naar een laptop ging met ca. 2. 8Gbit/s.

Wat een minpunt in mijn situatie is, is dat de kabels kort zijn, korter dan 50cm. Voor gebruik met een laptop prima, maar met een pc is dit veel te kort. Gelukkig heb ik ook nog een één meter lange kabel liggen, maar houd daar rekening mee als je deze kaartlezer koopt.

Kortom, heb je nog geen CFexpress kaart lezer, maar gebruik je in een camera wel een CFexpress kaart, koop deze Sony MRW-G1 geheugenkaart lezer, ter voorkoming van verlies van foto’s.

USB3. 0 schon, aber eben langse Datentransfer. Mit einem anderen CFexpress lesegerät(usb 3. 1 Gen2) konnte ich ca. 70GB Fotos innert 3 Minuten auf den Mac transferieren.

This is a very fast reader: I measured it at over 300 megabytes/second copying 21 GB of data from a Sony G series XQD 64GB card on a 2020 iMac, which was probably limited by my hard drive speed. I had been using a Lexar USB3 reader that came with their cards so many years ago, and while it wasn’t too slow, this reader is much faster.

You do need to install a Sony driver from an all-Japanese Sony site, which is a little scary, but straightforward: just follow the Atech instructions, and look for Win or Mac at the bottom of the page for the right driver download.

Build quality is pretty heavy with a thick metal case that makes it easier to eject the card (you push in the card to spring it out) without moving the reader too much. The red LED that lights up when a card is in the reader is too bright, so you might want to cover it up with some tape.

The reader also comes with its own Thunderbolt 3 cable that looks like it’s a little under 2 feet in length. I highly recommend it if want the fastest possible upload speeds from your cards!.

This is the second XQD reader that I buy. The previous was from another brand. I connect it to my brand-new Mac and it won’t read it. It says to go to the manufacturer’s homepage from where you are redirected to Sony’s page (all written in Japanese) from where you are supposed to download the driver.

I went to all Sony’s pages worldwide trying to download the driver, but the button on their page won’t work. I wrote Atech to help me out. Haven’t heard back yet.

I copied about 272 RAW files from a my Canon EOS 80D from an old SanDisk Class 10 SDXC card to an SSD in my Win t0 laptop with an older USB 3. 0 card reader plugged into a USB 3. 0 jack. The transfer speed averaged 6 MB/second.

Took half an hour, plus a minute or to for a readback compare. (The copy software was TeraCopy. ) When I received this reader today, as a test I repeated the copy of the same files, from the same card, through the same USB jack, into a new folder on the same SSD.

This time the entire process, including the readback compare, took four minutes. The transfer speed averaged 50 MB/second – much faster than 30MB/s speed rating printed the card. Can’t wait to get the R7 I have on back order so I can see what speeds are like with the pair of ProGrade 128GB UHS-II V90 cards I’ve bought to use with it.

It makes the media get very hot. Hotter than anything I’ve ever experienced with readers in my 20+ years of doing digital photography. Minus that, everything else about this reader I really like. Cards go in very smooth, magnet makes it nice to stick to the side of something.

Know the effects of magnets on various things because it is a strong magnet. Writes and reads very quickly and efficiently. Jus that darn heat thing is my only complaint, but it’s hot enough for me to dock it one star.

This worked with my Lexas card from one Canon R5. Not with the Lexas card in my other R5. So, I am still stuck loading pictures directly from the camera to my laptop. Same issue I have had with other brands.

Ordered this because the SanDisk CFexpress reader had a lot of negative reviews. I had never heard of Wise before, so I was prepared to run into issues. Fortunately, no problems so far after a few weeks of use.

Reads 512GB cards from our C500 Mark II just fine (using Windows 10).

I bought this for my Sony 512GB CFexpress THOUGH Type B. It works perfectly with my card. It’s the first time I use this type of cards and I don’t want to go back to SD ones. The USB-C connection coupled with the speed of the card is incredible.

I have recently started shooting with Compact Flash memory cards again. I had two readers-one CF only and one combination. When I started shooting large capacity/high speed SD cards, I went with a Lexar Professional SD-only reader.

What I noticed when I got a more modern CF card for the newer camera was that the bigger files loaded s l o w l y. So, I did some research and called on my experience with Lexar and chose this one. I noticed immediately that it was a beefy item.

That has nothing to do with function, but as other reviewers have mentioned, it stays put while in use. What it does do is load the files onto the computer MUCH faster than the older readers. To date, I’ve had no issues with file corruption.

Overall, I’m very happy with this reader, and would readily recommend it and buy it again.

Works great on MacBook Pro with USB-C ports. It’s a USB 3. 2 device and works well on newer machines ports but computers with the older pre USB-C ports cannot keep up with it so it will appear to be slow but that’s the computer not the card reader.

Has a solid feel and a foam ring on the base that helps keep it from being tossed around every time a cord is wiggled. However weight and size make it less portable so my MacBooks bag gets the small reader while the Lexar will be the desktop reader.

The style looks incredible among the clutter that accumulates around my computer LOL.

I got the Lexar Professional CF Express Type B Reader after not being happy with the ProGrade CF Express Type B reader. The Lexar gets mildly warm, the ProGrade gets extremely hot. The Lexar is faster than the ProGrade.

I use a USB-c to USB-c cord. The Lexar does not have an SD slot like the ProGrade. I have a Lexar USB 3. 0 reader for SD and my old CF cards. I highly recommend the Lexar Professional CF Express Type B Reader.

I suggest avoiding the ProGrade reader.

small but sturdy, it still weighs for its size. to the touch it has a good finish, especially with its silicon cover. In use it has a good transfer speed. and above all it does not heat up

This is easily the best of the four brands I have used. Good price, solid construction, very fast, and it doesn’t get hot to the touch after extended use like the others. Also, its footprint is slightly smaller than the others.

When I transferred the 83GB image on my prograde cfexpress 256GB card on my macbook pro 13″ m1 computer, it would altar in exactly 2 minutes. I learned that the macbook pro m1 supports 10gb/s and 40gb/s, if it did not support 20gb/s, I think it would transfer faster.

I found this cFast reader to be very fast and work without issue. If you have ever used a CF reader you will love the speed difference in these newer readers. My Large files transferred quickly with no issues.

A simple usb connection there is not much to go wrong. The cable length is great for a laptop, If i was using my desktop I would need and extension or something longer. Overall Great little Cfast transfer.

Is nice and fast, but not designed for travel. Work as a DIT and packing it up for travel to next location day after day resulted in the wire becoming fussy. After 3 weeks of daily use I couldn’t touch any part of the reader even slightly without it ejecting itself from the computer.

Not good.

I’m surprised smoke doesn’t blow out of this with the speed it transfers from a C-Fast from USB-C. It was like something out of the Matrix watching 50G of photos transfer in seconds. I thought it crashed and copied everything again just to be sure.

Nice weight and feel. Has rubber feet for bottom. Has really cooled down some of my hotter CFEx type B cards. It’s designed to fit into the Sandisk pro dock 4, which is pretty pricey. I’m holding off buying the dock until I see more format support.

They also need a pro blade adapter that fits the dock. This reader is arguably a bit big for a portable laptop reader, but the heatsink and cooling of the cards is worth it for me.

After recently purchasing my first CFexpress card, I was hoping to find a card reader that supports both SD and CFexpress cards. I’m very happy I chose Prograde. It’s super small and compact, which is a great benefit for me, as my post-processing station also acts as the family kitchen table and space is sacred.

The speed of this reader, along with the speed of a Lexar CFexpress card, is beyond what I’m accustomed to. Ridiculously fast in transferring my image files! While it wouldn’t be the end of the world to not have a dual card reader, it certainly makes it very convenient to have this level of versatility in one card reader.

Having previously used my iMac’s SD card reader, I’m happy to get away from reaching around on the back of the computer to insert the SD cards. My only concern-which was also mentioned in other reviews-is the heat generated by the reader.

When I pulled my CFexpress card out, it was quite hot. While the card seemed fine, I do wonder what applying that degree of heat to the card is going to do to the longevity of it. Time will tell, I suppose.

This CFexpress type B card reader is awesome, it will only be capped by the speed of your card. Just make sure to always use it with the included USB-C cable, if you switch to your own cable, doesn’t matter how good you think your cable is, it will not perform nearly as good as with the included cable.

The reader also has a bottom magnetic pad, making it easy to stick to any metallic surface with a strong hold. It will also read SD cards at ultra fast speeds, and it doesn’t get hot, at least not for me.

The only thing that would have made this reader the absolute best in the planet, is if it would also read XQD cards, but it does not, and doesn’t claim to either. I recommend this necessary accessory for CFexpress cards.

I prefer to use a card reader, than connecting my camera to the computer every time I need to transfer content, over time, the USB-C connector in the camera will wear and get damaged, just like with any phone out there.
