20 Best Chainsaw Blade Sharpener (2022 Updated)

I purchased this unit to sharpen my chain saw chains myself. I have 8 used chains that need sharpening frequently and at $5-10 per chain each time, it can get a little spendy. This unit is very good quality and very easy to set up and use.

Never having used one of these before, I was set up and sharpening in less than 30 minutes. I had to do a little research to learn what chains I had with respect to cutting angle and size of wheel to use.

Once I had this figured out, I set the machine at a 55 degree wheel angle and a 30 degree vise angle and started sharpening, Each chain took about 15 minutes. The true test of the quality of sharpening is actually cutting some trees.

I cut down 5 large pines trees and the newly sharpened chains cut through them like a knife through butter. I highly recommend this unit to any serious wood cutter.

There are good things to be found about this grinder, though I was a little disappointed with a couple of specific items. The vise is the biggest limitation of this unit. It does not hold the chain well.

The cam concept is great but not very well implemented. The contact surface of the cam is so small that it only grabs the drive link of the tooth you are trying to sharpen by the corner. This allows the tooth to tip during grinding even after pulling the chain against the stop securely as indicated in the manual.

A slight redesign where there is a larger contact area by the cam would be a great help. The second issue is the depth stop is very flimsy and because of it does not stop the head consistently in the same place.

Even when using a light touch can be very difficult to “feel” when the head has reached the stop because of so much play. Because of these issues I can’t say I recommend it at this point, but if Oregon makes a couple of small improvements I think this would be an amazing grinder for sure.

Wow, I really like this unit. It does a nice job of renewing my chains. I’m in the process of removing over 100 tree stumps. I dig some dirt away from the stump, then use a pressure washer to remove the balance of the dirt from the stump area I’m going to cut.

This Oregon sharpener is saving me many hours of labor. When I say many hours of labor, I really do mean many hours. I really can’t find a problem with it, except the package really should come with a thumb drive with demonstrative instructions.

The instruction booklet has detailed instructions, but I couldn’t absorbed it? I searched the internet for a video on it’s operation and after finding one, the booklet made sense. Anyway, I really do like this unit, it’s extremely easy to use.

Just wished that I purchased one many years ago.

The file guide keeps the correct angle on the cutters and makes it easy and quick to sharpen anywhere. The depth guide ensures that the rakers are filed to the proper height. Proper use of this kit enables the saw to cut better and more easily which should provide more life to the saw, bar, and chain.

Lastly, the saw operator does not need to work as hard.

My Stihl MS170 got pretty dull after cutting 6 or 7 cords of firewood – this sharpener did the job fantastically. Almost felt sharper than a new chain>

This is an excellent chain saw sharpener – much better than the inexpensive ones I’ve used in the past. The motor runs quietly and smoothly and it never bogs when grinding the chain. If you’re careful and only use short “chirps” on the tooth, it won’t overheat the metal, but that’s definitely a risk with the vitrified wheels that come with it.

Oregon provides excellent tutorial videos and there are many other videos available from users online. The results with this sharpener are much better than I’ve been able to get in the past with less expensive units, and the 1/4″ wheel makes grinding the rakers super easy and much faster than doing it by hand with a file.

I only recommend it to those who need to sharpen a lot of chain. It does work, with a bunch of fussin around. I expected much higher quality for the money. The middle of the unit has flex to it when you get to the stop.

If you don’t tighten the swivel base down with a huge amount of torque it will slip when you go to tighten the chain lock. I had to debur the chain guide because the chains kept getting hung up when pulling them to the next tooth to be sharpened.

The swivel for horizontal angle is made very sloppy. When you go from one side of the chain to the other it will take more off from one side than the other, requiring adjustment every time you switch sides.

And last it has a super cheesey handle. Made in Italy, but I was beginning to think it was made in China.

Good: Delivery on time. Adjustable angles and stops to match any saw chain sharpening spec. Structure is strong enough to prevent deflection when grinding-resulting in very sharp cutting edge. Includes set up for grinding rider height.

Adequate power, low vibration. Not so good: Instructions are okay, could be better. #72 chain data does not match Oregon square chisel skip tooth grind shown on box, (even though this grinder is supplied through same company?).

Max. tilt from vertical is 45 degrees, but scale goes to 40. Just enough tilt to match the Oregon square chisel tooth profile. Profiling 1/4″ grinding wheel for rider set up is a very slow process.

Easy to use. sharpen the chainsaw quickly. The 30 degrees angle guide marks are very clear and easy to follow. Awesome tool.

Works great, make sure you have the right size file, and make sure you know the angle the blade should be sharpened at, and this kit will give good results.

There are enough YouTube videos describing this tool just search for “best chainsaw sharpener” (like I did). It’s quick and easy to use, sharpens the tooth and adjusts the raker at the same time, it’s inscribed with the angle of attack and the direction of travel, comes with three nice sharp files, and is small and light enough to keep in your toolkit.

Shop around and you should be able to buy (new) for under 30. I wish I’d discovered this tool years ago!.

I never had much luck trying to sharpen by hand so I took em in to be sharpened. This thing is as good or better than professional machine Sharpening and it takes less time to sharpen a chain or two than it takes to drive to the shop to drop it off.

It will pay for itself pretty quick and they’re is no reason to ever cut with a chain that isn’t 100% sharp.

Bought this as I was pretty sure my sharpening technique wasn’t doing my chains much good, meaning I was replacing them well before they were actually spent (as I could not really get them sharp again).

Great purchase (at about 25 or so) which really helped me get a good consistent result with chains, even in the field (ie away from the house). Pretty easy to use too if you follow the arrows and the vids on YouTube too plus ensure you brush out the files regularly and also change them when it feels like they are not biting any longer.

you get the feel as you get more experienced with it. All in all, well worth the money to get much more out of each chain (until the teeth are virtually gone – which I never managed before).

Good solid machine suitable for lots of use and should last many years. Sadly the one I got is not bi-directional with the wheel direction. But I was very happy to pick this one up for a great deal and when it arrived I found it was in excellent condition.

I read that the early 511A models still had the forward/off/reverse toggle. No confirmation if that’s 100% true. I do know I got one that still has the metal toggle style switch and newer ones went to a plastic rocker switch.

I also know some of the later models with the plastic rocker switch had a built in light up under the clear plastic at the base of the motor shaft. I may try throwing a 3 position toggle in mine and see if I can wire it up for forward and reverse to keep that creepy burr off the outside of my teeth.

Once again, read about it being pretty easy to do that on the early models. Anyway, great machine. Really stoked to have it.

I bought these for my ez file. I wanted to make sure it was an exact fit. Hard to beat the price.

There is no doubt that these are the best files made, sharpen more chains faster than any other file I’ve tried.

The files are brand new and if good quality.

I have a lot of different chain saw blades. This fits the bill. It has files for my old chain saw from the 60’s, a craftsman ps to my Stihl ms 390. I have B & D battery operated saws (4) craftsman plug in electric.

Mac 120. All can be sharpened with this kit of different sized files. I have used the sharpening files so far. The flat with the different guides, I have not used yet. The product seems to be great. The time changing blades and the cost of buying new chainsaw blades.

This will save me time and money.

Basic kit is all you need to keep your chains in super sharp shape! Works well with automatic chain sharpeners too. Great kit for the price!

Sharpened my chain blades great. You can feel the file working and testing the chain saw after sharpening was great. Be sure to use the correct angle; mine was 30 degrees.

I bought this tool for sharpening my chainsaw. I thought this will take a while. I was really happy, sharpened my chainsaw in 10 mins and it was like a new blade. Perfect. Really happy with the product and swift delivery also.

Oregon brand is plain and simple good quality period. I’ve been able to sharpen their chains easily and consistently. Files I’ve used cut well without huge pressure needed. I tend to cut a bit of the Handel spike to shorten, but only enough to still get good purchase in the orange Handel’s by them.

Like the angle Guage on these free hand file handles.

You just can’t beat Oregon tools. The handle fits the hand nicely and makes using the cut file much easier. These files last a long time as well. I highly recommend this kit. If you’re a woodsman or novice you need this.

Blades get dull. If you get this kit you are set. A sharp blade is a safe blade.

Compared to the worn out ones that I had, they are great.

I’ve sharpened a LOT of blades with my cheap little Harbor Freight chainsaw sharpener. While it may be a little flexible, with a good eye and a steady hand, you can get consistent sharpening grinds every time.

This blade is a perfect replacement for the inevitable wearing down of your old blade. Consistency varies blade to blade in overall size and grit just a little. It’s minuscule, but enough to notice side by side.

Granted, it makes little difference in the end results as long as you pay attention. Once worn about half down, it’s time to replace, as they start to get brittle and will come apart. Still a great time and money saver, as I don’t have to take a whole day and drive into town to take 20 chains to the hardware store.

I bought this wheel to see if it would fit a chain saw sharpener I have from another company. The real reason I bought it was to see if it could be used to sharpen by saw mill blades. The bottom line, I ended up buying the H, which I tested to see if I could sharpen those bandsaw blades on it.

YES, with some modification. Having already sharpen half a dozen on the big grinder, it will have to wait for some time in the future. The idea here was to see what you can buy from the local HF and make it work for some other purpose.

Some guys are really good at that. The future will tell how well this will work out.

After a 140 mph derecho, most trees in our city were severely damaged, so many people went out and bought chain saws. After the chains got dull, there was a long wait time at shops to get them sharpened.

So I offered to sharpen chains for free for the crews and individuals in my neighborhood. Then word got around, and soon I was sharpening hours a day. I turned the original disk over to get a better profile cut, and ordered two new disks.

I have lost track of how many chains I have sharpened, but am impressed with the durability of the disk. “Business” has slowed considerably, but I would guess our city has one of the highest per capita chain saw numbers in the country!.

Most of us are guilty of using a round file that was actually too small for the chain, but we used it anyway, and most likely got into the wrong angles, having shaved into the chain in places.

Many of us are just not methodical and end up buying too many new chains. This Kit saves you from all of that. It’s simple to use and it’s precise. It sharpens better than I ever could with my past rudimentary ways.

This Chain Saw field kit, comes with just about everything you need for sharpening and filing chainsaw blades while you are in the woods, or away from your shop. It comes with 3 chainsaw sharpening files of different sizes; 5/32, 3/16 and 7/32.

The kit comes with a file guide. The files press into, which help to control the line and angle for which to sharpen chain saw blades. There are marks on the guide, that indicates the correct angle for each specific blade.

It’s real simple to use. It comes with a depth guide so that you can use the flat file, to sharpen the tooth and depth gauge of each chainsaw link. You just can’t mess up with these tools and they take all of the guesswork out of sharpening.

The kit comes with a handle, that fits these tools and it makes the job easier. All of this comes in an Orange pouch, which roles up conveniently.

Bought one several years ago- the Italian made version, and once you get the hang of it, does a respectable job. If you have a work bench ( I use a Workmate) where you can comfortably sit, you need a way to stabilize the bar and saw.

I use a small 4″ clamp-on vise, and clamp the bar with a block of wood under the saw to get the top of the bar level, as the bar tilts upward when the saw is sitting on the table. The key is to make sure the clamp that holds the chain steady is clamped properly, centered, and just over the rivets – just tight enough to keep the chain from wobbling.

The back clamp that holds the device to the bar may need a little more than finger tight, but not a lot. Remember that the file stroke should be from the inside of the cutter, and DON’T file on the backstroke or you will dull the file very quickly! Wear gloves as well since as you pull the chain though, it can and will nick your fingers.

I use a small dab of touch up paint to mark the first link I do, so I can tell when one side is done, and I then adjust the guide to do the opposite cutters. It also helps to set the depth nut- mine looks like a black acorn nut, to determine how much the file takes off.

Set it so the file just touches the tooth you are sharpening, then adjust it so the file engages the cutter. If the chain is not nicked or chipped, it will only take 8-10 light stokes to get the edge right.

You don’t have to be too aggressive- let the file do the work. The file should be positioned so that 1/5 of the file’s diameter is above the cutter- if not, and it is less than that, the cutter will be “hooked” and can kick back very easily! I thought I would write this as over the course of 40 years, I have made just about every mistake you can make with a chain saw, and still have all ten fingers and toes! I’ve used this file guide with good success, and a properly sharpened chain will cut well for quite a while before it needs to be sharpened again.

The reason for only 4 stars is that I have an older Oregon sharpener and it is all metal construction. It has been very durable. This new unit is half plastic and even the angle guides are plastic. Over the long haul I think it will self destruct.

I know it will never hold up like my all metal unit. If you don’t do a lot of cutting and don’t have to sharpen your chain every day like a logger the unit will be OK. I wouldn’t want to depend to this unit if I was a pro cutter.

The good: This shows the correct angle to file with respect to the bar, and with respect to the chain. The are many ways to adjust the tool such that it matches the chain type and pitch. This is best used as a teaching tool such that later you can better hand file to ‘touch up” the chain.

The not so good: It takes a month of sundays to sharpen a chain this way. It may of course be worse if the cutters need substantial re-shaping. One must watch carefully that the tool doesn’t move on the bar during filing, even with the thumb nuts tight.

The slider binds on the rod it slides on, especially at first. The angle setting hardware is sloppy, even with the fasteners tightened, the angle can be changed slightly. An annoyance, the file handle does not grip the file very well, keeps slipping off.

OVERALL, a useful tool that does require some practice to use. I’d buy it again. Wish quality/precision was higher.

The machine works great. China is doing better copying name brands like Oregon. The company sent me two 3/16″ grinding wheels and they would not admit their mistake. I won’t order from the company that sold me this product again.

I ordered a 1/8″ grinding wheel from Laser, and the wheel is made of better quality than the cheap quality grinding wheels they sent with this machine. I’m happy I got it, because it works great. Other than that, the grinder’s built in light is not sufficient enough, so I have to use another light.

After ordering another wheel and using another light source, It works great for sharpening saw teeth, and knives, scissors.

I bought a chainsaw sharpener about 30 years ago and it worked well for me. After giving it to my brother in-law, I purchased another, thinking it would replace the old one. They don’t make them like they used to.

Pros. – The disc trims evenly and the narrow width makes for tighter cuts. – The large on & off switches are mice and the light is well placed. Cons. – The product is cheaply made and all the adjustments are are very hard to move comfortably.

I bought the unit about 2 months ago, I had several chainsaw chains to do, I was disappointed after the second chain. The movable parts are difficult to adjust. As for the chain clamping device, I’ve had to take it apart and tighten the bolts several times.

In my opinion, spend a bit more money and buy a quality product.

Tried all o5her sharpening devices over the last 20 years. All of them had some sort of compromise, either too hard to use, took too much time or simply didnt work. This sharpener is hands down the easiest, quickest and best value way to get maximum life out of your chain.

Best part of is that it files the rakers as you file the teeth! Keeps the blade feeling like new all the time. Been a long time since I bought a tool/gadget that actually worked. If you got a chain saw you need this sharpener.

Not cheap but if you have problems sharpening a chainsaw chain this device will help. There are at least 3 sizes of files to choose from so make sure you get the right size for your chain. The correct angle is shown on the bar of the sharpener and is easy to follow.

The PFERD sharpener has the advantage of filing down the rakers to the correct level while at the same time sharpening the cutters. This sharpener enabled me to get a chainsaw chain to cut well after a lack of success with a file and guide.

I am left wondering why someone hasn’t thought of this simple solution sooner. This sharpener does a far better job in my opinion than the expensive electric units that in my case broke.

I’ve come up with a theory that I must have done some bad stuff with a blade in my last life. God said I could get another shot, but no knives. I’m cursed when it comes to trying to sharpen ANYTHING.

Can’t get my chainsaw sharp. Kitchen knives? Nope. Straight razor for my face? no way. Not allowed to sharpen anything. No devices work. back to the point, I’m sure this is a really great kit, comes with all the stuff you need probably, I’m just too big of a ***** to use it apparently.

Price was fair, basically fairly low. The guide clamp fit loosely. It was usable and sharpened the saw well. I dont believe this is a multiyear tool. You should view a youtube video for clarity on the proper way to sharpen.

I would call it useful for a homeowner that does not use the chainsaw much. Sharpening makes a huge difference on ease of cutting, so it is well worth it. Three stars as the bottom spring clamp came loose after about ten minutes of use.

It is critical to hold the guide in place for accurate sharpening. You also need to know your saws teeth size and cutting angle that can be found in the manual.

Hello amazon shoppers!! The way I reviewed the products I buy in Amazon is pretty simple from 1- to- 5 stars, 1 being horrible, 3 being ok, 5 being amazing. Let’s begin!! Check my pictures for reference, my advice and warning.

This is an easy and affordable sharpening kit to sharpen chains in a chainsaw. Is not perfect. But trust me it work for me and I am basically a Newbie when it comes to chainsaws. You just need some elbow grease and it will help if you have a vice.

But, I sharpen my chain without a vice and it works just like the new chain I bought. My rating for this product is 5 stars because I love how affordable and easy is to use. Use tips/advice: instructions aren’t the best.

So please watch a couple videos in YouTube before using it. I found out that when it comes to sharpen the chain. You must remove equal amount of metal from each teeth and keep your hand firm and level when sharpening from left to right.

Also sharpen in a 44 degree angel. Once again watch videos. Advices: use leather gloves and goggles when using this product. And chainsaw protection when using this product. A vice will help. But not a must.

For the price it’s pretty awesome, better than I expected but not without a few flaws. Overall the main chassis and motor assemby are as solid as can be. It lacks in the small metal parts that hold the chain adjustment, not very well put together but can easily be made better if you have basic tinkering garage skills.

I just added a small spring to pull the arm down onto the chain and some small washers as spacers to keep the arm centerd on the chain, done. Once you get it dialed in it’s all business, you can get a chain done fairly fast.

I’m just an average firewood guy who does about 10 cords per year and general work in the woods. I got tired of the junky ol weak sloppy HF sharpener and came looking expecting to pay $400 for a nice oregon unit, I’m really glad I found this and did’nt pay the extra $$$.

Compared to the HF sharpener this one is about a billion times better and should be more than enough to suit the needs of the average chainsaw dude.

It has a few flaws. base knob is difficult to get tihgt. plastic shroud should have a hole in it to access hole in motor shaft. the steel that grips drive lengths is to stiff ,cannott get it to tighten down on.
