20 Best Chainsaw For Firewood (2022 Updated)

My husband is an certified tree arborist. He has been using Stihl products from the day we first met, which was in 2004. He said they were the best, nothing can beat their durability, their performance and their prices.

Well, he needed a new saw, one that cordless and a smaller blade. His other saws have 16 and 18 ” bars on them. I found the Craftsman V20 Cordless 10 in chainsaw kit and I bought it for him. He knew he got a new saw but he never really ‘looked’ at it because to him I never would buy anything but Stihl.

Well, he after using it on a small tree job he came home and told me that that Stihl must have done something new to enhance the performance of their chainsaws because the little beast I bought him was impressive.

He’s been doing tree work for over 35 years. I finally told him to look at it and look at the brand and he was beyond shocked. Never had he owned a Craftsman tool of any sort but he said he will be surely be looking into buying more of the Craftsman tools in the future.

I read to him the warranty on Craftsman products and that doubly impressed him. You got a new customer for life.

I bought this for the obvious, tree trimming. I recently used this to cut every branch off a tree as hig has I could before felling it to minimize it catching in other trees on the way down. Using it at ground level it is pretty easy to handle.

Obviously the higher you reach, the more unwieldy it gets. If you use it on a ladder, MAKE SURE to strap the ladder down hard AND use a safety harness to strap yourself in place. Even then, though, it can be a pain to use.

It is sorely missing a shoulder support strap to take some of the strain off between cuts. Overall I liked it, though. It can also be very handy for cutting up branches further once they’re on the ground without having to bend over a lot.

I definitely don’t regret the purchase, and will be using it often in the future.

Purchased this product as a kit and was a bit skeptical at 1st but this pole-saw has handled everything I’ve thrown at it for quite a while now and also stood up to a bit of abuse as well. Pleasant surprise.

Adjustment & maintenance is very easy. Handles better then a comparable gas powered unit due to lighter weight. Given the duty cycle and enough batteries I would expect it to run with a gas powered unit.

I expect to cut a lot more stuff with this setup for many more years to come.

Got this pole saw earlier this summer since a few of our trees had dead branches out of reach. I used it with and without the extension. Cut dozens of branches; some up to about 4 inches in diameter.

It had no problem with any of them. I’ve used a 4ah battery each time and it barely drains the battery. It was also a super value as I got it on sale for $99. Very easy to use. A bit wobbly with the extension, but works fine with a bit of care.

Ive owned a Husqvarna 455 (22 bar) close to a decade and its fine everything I needed, but the sucker is big and heavy and its no fun climbing trees with that thing. Finally decided to get something smaller, and after quite a lot of searching and reading reviews I settled on this CS-310.

Shipping was reasonably quick, everything in the box was new and in good shape. Added oil and fuel, checked the chain tension and it fired up on the very first pull. There are no break-in instructions, so I just let it idle for a few minutes, then ran it up and down a bit, then began cutting.

Itll chew through anything you can put in front of it. Doesnt have the grunt of the big saw so you need to be sure to let the chain do the work and not exert excessive pressure on the blade. It cut through a 10 branch no problem, besides tons of smaller stuff.

Seems to start on the first pull every time, and it sips fuel gently as compared to the big saw. I put about 2 hours (intermittent use) on the first tank of fuel. Zero concerns. I like that its light, easy to start and still gnaws through wood like a beaver on meth.

No complaints at all. Definitely not as delux as the Husqvarna, but it also cost less than half.

I have a battery-powered chainsaw, but when a historic ice storm ravaged Oklahoma, including our property, with many downed limbs and small trees, I knew I needed better. Our landscaper had been using these, and I thought I would try it out.

Boy, is it a workhorse (so am I, I guess 🙂 It starts with just a very few pulls, the operation is intuitive, and it sure can cut! I am glad I got this model, and not the next size up because these old muscles don’t have the durability for a heavier machine.

Interestingly, when I picked up the electric saw for a quick cut, I found it is fairly heavier. So, this gas-powered fella is more powerful and lighter to boot. Of course, one must mess with 3 different flammable fluids, and it isn’t as simple as push a button and go.

But for good results that I can have all day, this unit really does the job!.

I have a Solo 645 that is over 20 years old and has never let me down, but I thought it was time to get another saw as it is now impossible to get parts for the Solo. The Echo CS 400 is a little smaller but came with a longer bar than the Solo.

The Echo feels very solid and well made. I like the automobile-style air filter and the ease of getting at it. The controls are well placed, and the balance is great. I filled it up with gas, and it started after a few pulls and started very easy each time after that.

It cuts very well with low vibration, so Im sure itll be comfortable to use for hours. The price makes it a great value. I cant vouch for its longevity yet, but I have a feeling Ill be reaching for this saw for quite a while.

Chainsaws Direct also did a fine job shipping this saw. Im all set.

I own a stihl ms271 chainsaw. Problems with it not starting for 3 yrs now. Back to another mechanic for work. Iam trying someone else instead of the dealer. Dealer said i was using bad gas, not likely because all my other 2 stroke equipment start right up.

I even use non ethanol gas plus i have used their premixed stuff. There is definitely something wrong with this chainsaw, we shall see what this mechanic says. Definitely won’t be buying another stihl chainsaw.

I have a Farm Boss MS270 and MS271. Both work great. The MS270 is legendary. The MS271 works like a horse right alongside without missing a beat. No complaints and no problems. Take care of the lube oil, keep the chain sharpened, make sure you use gasoline with 2 cycle oil added and drain the fuel if you are not using the saw for several months.

Simple maintenance and these saws will be work horses for you.

Bought from ace hardware last fall. Only used it two times. Very little. It was always hard to start. Put it away for the winter. Used the gas I bought from tha hardware store. Has no gas station gas in it.

No ethanol. Got it out today and pulled and pulled trying to start it. Finally my brother came over and we finally got it going. This thing is going back. Something wrong with it. Also got my husky out and it started with two pulls.

A great saw. It’s well built and German made. Got about 10 tanks of gas through it. I run a 24″ bar and it handles it well. Not overly heavy for a big saw. The only two negatives are it loves to drink gas and is easy to flood.

Definitely do not choke it if it has been run, even from the day before. Compared to other saws in its class it’s a great value. If you don’t believe me check out what other owners have to say about it on chainsaw forum sites.

I simply adore my Stihl 171!! I am learning at the age of 45 & have been taught thru my life to fear chainsaws. I started out with an older used McCullouch so to me this Stihl is like a Cadillac. It starts like a champ and I can start it without putting it on the ground which is really saying something for this old lady! Nice and light so easy to pack in to the places we go.

Translucent gas tank is a nice touch. Simply cannot beat the price and I am able to keep up with my husband and his 455 Husqvarna for the most part. I leave the 36″-48″ stumps to him. Simply a joy of a machine.

The young sales associate at Ace hooked me up with the upgraded warranty (4 years) with the purchase of bar oil that was needed anyways. He even gased it and test started it before we left the store.

The saw cuts well and runs well, but there are a few concerns. -It is hard to start when cold and floods easily. -After picking it up from the shop the two bolts holding the bar on fell off after a few uses.

There is no mechanism to hold them on and ensure they don’t back off during use. This is definitely a safety hazard as it sent the chain flying 20 ft when the bar fell off. I should have double checked, but I was standing right there when the technician tightened the bar on and started it up for the first time in the shop.

i was going to buy something a little smaller to cut some hardwood stumps down – glad i didnt – this saw had to work for that job but did it without any major grizzles. Absolutely can cut hardwood its entire length – key to any chainsaw.

keep the chain sharp. this is a strong piece of equipment considering its physical size. along with a smaller electric chainsaw im confident i can tackle anything on my lifestyle block with ease.

looked at all the differnet models and this is the best.

I’ve owned this saw for a couple of years now and haven’t had a start/ run, problems with it. It is not a powerful saw and is suited to doing “liming” of larger stems of trees to prepare for firewood.

I do quite a bit of tree work and have many different saws, but I keep this one around because it is light weight and maneuverable. There’s better pro series saws that would do the job as well or better, but they cost 5 times the price of this one.

You will need a carb adjusting tool to keep it running well and a couple of files to keep the chain sharp. If the chain isn’t sharp, that’s ultimately what does the cutting, you will put too much pressure on the saw and bogg it down.

This saw doesn’t like to be over worked and it will make you work harder and there goes all the fun in operating a chainsaw. Always use non ethanal fuel mixed at 50 to one, and eliminate most of your running problems before they start.

Be safe and enjoy running this easy starting, quiet and almost vibration free saw. My last Poulan Pro lasted me 12 years, which is longer than some of my big name saws have.

Bought this saw several years ago and cut many trees with it. Had the same problem out of the box as the people above. Took it in to my local Rural King and the were very friendly. They got the guy that works there in lawn & garden.

I slight carburetor adjustment and it has ran great since. There is a special tool to adjust the carburetor I found on line for a few bucks. I went ahead and got one for future adjustments. Later bought a Poulan weed wacker with the chain saw attachment for limbs.

Same problem out of the box. Carburetor to lean. Slight adjustment ran great. Glad I bought the tool. Both have been very reliable and easy to start. Note to Poulan: Maybe include the carb adjustment tool and a note that it may need adjustment.

These are great little machines for the price. especially if you can find them on sale, as I did at Tractor Supply. I do quite a bit of tree felling and cutting and have owned 4 of them for the last approx.

10 years. and they all still work fine. I like to have two saws always available for the rare occasion when one gets stuck in a tree, so I’ve had two at home and two at the cabin in N. Ontario. This year I sold the Ontario cabin (with the equipment that was there including the two Poulan’ s) due to the border issues and bought a cabin in Upper Michigan.

Needing two more saws for this new cabin it was a no-brainer for me to get two more Poulan’ s when TS had them on sale. Learn how to maintain them properly and they will serve you well for many many years.

The Makita UC4041A/2 is an improvement on my old B&D. This one has an automatic oil feed system, which will take some time getting used to. With my B&D you pumped the oil and saw it appear on the chain.

This one, the oil is supposed to appear as a mist at the far end of the chain, adjusting a screw to govern the rate of oil flow. At least l won’t forget to pump now and again. A vast improvement is the tensioning of the chain.

No more spanners and screwdrivers. Just loosen the chain guide big screw, by hand, and turn a dial. Magic. There’s a brake system, which means it won’t start at all, but when off it does stop very fast.

Cable is long. Easier to clean. Conclusion: A nice chainsaw for normal household use.

Upon opening the packaging I was concerned to find all the adjustment parts were made of plastic? Considering all the other moving parts were alloy or steel, this didn’t fill me with confidence. Unfortunately after less that ten minutes use cutting small branches, the chain came off and had broken the plastic adjustment pin.

This rendered the saw unusable as the chain could no longer be adjusted. Screwfix were great issuing an immediate refund when returned. I never had a bad experience with Makita before. I would not recommend this chainsaw due to poor use of construction materials.

I did a ton of research before buying this product. The reviews and the price are what led me to make this purchase. I was concerned with the name Sun Joe. I had never heard of it and to be honest I thought it sounded like some cheap brand that one would find in a tent sale or something.

So far, I have not been disappointed. This saw works great! I was skeptical of a chainsaw being electric as opposed to gas, but the prospect of low maintenance appealed to me. All I have to do with this saw is keep the lubricating oil filled up.

The chain lubes itself as long as you keep the oil filled up. I had a tree in the front yard that I tackled with this saw. I easily cut branches that were at least 16″ diameter, maybe more, I didn’t measure.

It held up quite well. I read a few reviews about the chain coming off frequently, but I have not had this problem. As long as you keep an eye on the tension during use it will stay on. It fell off once on me and that was all I needed to remember to keep an eye on it.

Never had a problem after that. I used it heavily for 3 days now and have not thrown the chain off again. The only complaint I have with the product is that the instruction manual was confusing in a couple of places.

It stressed that the chain would continue to move for a couple seconds once you let off of the trigger, but mine does not do this. I thought maybe I had the tension too tight but that was not the case.

I was worried that maybe I was going to burn up the motor so I emailed the company and they told me that it was fine. The assembly instructions for mounting the chain were confusing for me too because I was missing a hex nut that was supposed to be holding on the bar.

Sun Joe is sending me the missing nut, but my saw actually works just fine without it. It has been over a week and I have not received the part yet, so those are the reasons that I only gave the saw 4 stars.

You can consider the saw a 5 star buy though. I doubt many saws will be shipped missing the part that I was missing. I really like this saw. I like it so much that I also ordered the Sun Joe SWJ803E-CMO Electric Pole Chainsaw.

I have a ton of high branches to cut and some 4-5 inch diameter ivy that is strangling my tree in the backyard. The pole saw has been amazing as well. ****DON’T FORGET TO BUY THE OIL WITH IT.

I really tortured it, cutting logs lengthwise since I don’t have a log splitter. The motor got hot and there was a plastic-type smell but it kept working and didn’t need to cool off. I would’ve given it 5 stars except the chain tightening screw fell out and got lost.

Easy enough to replace with a 1-1/4″ 8/32 thread screw. I cranked an 8/24 thread nut on the end so it couldn’t fall out again. Also it has a skip-tooth chain. I’ll try to get another chain for it that isn’t skip-tooth.

I ‘ve never put a chain saw together, so the gear chain and getting the tension on the saw just right took me about an hour for everything. Getting that plastic chain gear cover back on took some extra time.

But after that I went out and sawed my two 25 yr old trees into a very manageable smaller trees. I even held the saw up a bit to cut higher limbs from the ideal cutting stance. It sailed right through the wood so well.

I checked the chain saw oil and the level hardly went down a bit. But I sawed and then moved the tree parts before sawing again. I stopped once for an hours break and worked for 2 hours and 5 minutes total before the chain fell off the blade.

By then I was pooped and ready to put things back inside my house. Great Chain Saw for this 69 year old Grandmother.

This saw is a mixed bag–it has some nice features and good design ideas, but as with most products from China, is very disappointing in it’s execution. The chain tension adjuster is convenient and easy to to use; no tools are required and it works flawlessly to keep the chain under ideal tension.

But the saw leaks oil and leaves a huge mess where ever it is set down. The red color fades quickly in sunlight, making it look old and drab. The housing is plastic and becomes brittle with age, leading to premature cracking and failure.

My saw stopped working after very little use; the power switch had failed, and replacing it required total disassembly of the saw. As a long-time buyer of Craftsman tools, I fondly remember when they were proudly made in the USA, were of superior construction, and lasted virtually forever.

No more; this saw came from China and although it looks nice coming out of the box, it’s not the long-distance runner that I wanted. I bought the saw at my local Sears store shortly before they closed.

I wonder if Sears management understands that selling me-too junk from China is one reason the company failed.

This chainsaw was working good for a while, but then the part that tightens the chain started to fail (it will no longer tighten the chain). I bought the corded pole chainsaw (it’s slightly smaller) prior to this one.

Later found out it was on the recall list, saw the announcement at Lowes. I filled out the paperwork for the repair, but never heard back. While I was waiting to hear back from them I decided to just purchase this one instead.

Terrible customer service and not durable products. Disappointed.

I bought this saw as an upgrade to my 455 Rancher last month. What a boost in power and performance. It has a scary amount of power in comparison to the Rancher. It bore cuts well and the felling sights are really easy to see.

It was a bit hard to get used to the ergonomic angles of the saw itself but I really like using it. I got it with a 24″ bar and was dropping 22″ spruce trees like nothing. I only had one gripe with it and that was that the saw didn’t like the cold much, but that is understood after reading the manual.

I will be purchasing the winter cover for it when running it in the cold winters in Northern BC. My other Husqvarna isn’t any different. What else would you expect with carbs?? I love the saw so far and if it keeps running as good as it is now then I would definitely buy one again! Next time with a heated carb.

I formerly had a Stihl which I enjoyed for a dozen years before it got stolen. This Husky takes my old Stihl out to the woodshed. It cuts significantly faster and it’s smooth and powerful. It’s exceeded my expectations.

During a recent storm there were some massive oaks down on my road and my co-worker and I with the same Husky saws dominated some huge oaks. My neighbor approached us asking “are you guys from National Grid?”.

In less than an hour we had diced up 3 huge oaks and rolled the logs out of the street. It took an excavator to move part of the trunk it was so large. If you want a saw that can git-r-done look no further.

It cuts through wood angrily.

I know own my third of these saws. I use them as a weekend arborist as an in tree for large branches and trunking along as for felling. The first one overheated because my fuel wasn’t right and AutoTune over corrected and burned up the piston.

It had 5 years of hard use so I can’t argue that one much. The second was just 1. 5 years old and just stopped running while cutting a pine trunk. I wasn’t even working it that hard and it was cutting perfect when it quit.

It had never given me any problems and I had taken care of it between jobs to keep it ready for the next. Now it starts hard and won’t idle. The local shop were I bought it says they found dirt in the cylinder that got past the filter.

I have the extended warranty on it but dirt past the filter isn’t covered. The filter is a know issue with these saws and has since been upgraded to a sealing screw on type. Kits are available for the old ones too.

I can’t help but feel like the filter should have been a recall and the saw should still be covered if it was a known defect. I got another of the same saw because I like the size and weight in the tree.

I also hope the problems with the filter and AutoTune have been fixed. It’s a great saw and has only let me down twice, but Husqvarna’s warranty and service has let me down everytime.

Love the saw. It rips through wood! It was my go to saw. until it quit. It has ran perfectly for a few years but a few months ago during a storm clean up it just stopped. Was running fine and then it would only idle.

Took it to the shop and they replaced the carb and also stated they found dust in the cylinder that got through the filter. Apparently this is a design issue because they offer an upgraded filter. The carb replacement was not cheap and only can be done at a dealer.

It is my understanding that a new Autotune carb is shipped and has to be flashed to install. Now I’m afraid to use the saw for fear that it will cost me $200+ to fix again. I am currently looking to buy one of the few non-autotunes Husky still makes.

The saw cuts really fast with the supplied chain. The bar is lacking a grease fitting on the nose – why? Unexpected is the needle bearing that needs greasing requiring disassembly of the saw to reach it.

I have several less expensive saws of the same brand and none have this bothersome requirement. Starting requires first flooding and then starting choke off with a wide open throttle – the instructions on starting are useless.

There are websites that discuss how to start this particular model! Ease of starting is a major issue.

Have spent ages looking at electric chainsaws. Finally bit the bullet and bought the 140 chainsaw. Totally love it. With the two batteries, it’s no problem to cut a load of firewood. Love the fact that you can cut wood in closed spaces with no fumes.

Have used it around the farm, trimming trees, again outstanding You cut the branches, put it down, stack the branches, and move to the next one. No pulling the start cord each time. Showed a friend, and now she has bought one.

Having used this chainsaw I have to say that I am impressed by its ability to cut through the larger logs. A bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing. It will cut through logs with little or no pressure from me, I just let the weight of the machine take it through and not put any real strain on it.

I’ve used Homelite chain saws for years and never had a problem. When my last one needed to be replace I was told that I should buy a Stihl as they were the best. I bought one and could not get it started.

When I took it back to the store they looked at it and said that the it was defective and they would replace it. They said it would be easier to get the easy start version for a few more dollars. I upgraded and the saw has worked once since I got it.

The manual says it is so easy to start that w child can do it. Maybe so, but as an adult I can’t. I’ve repeatedly tried to follow the instructions in the manual and nothing happens. This product is the biggest lemon I have ever purchased.

Do yourself a favor if you are looking for a chainsaw. get another brand.

I bought my MS 311 October 2021. Same day I bought the saw I bought a saw case, file kit, 25″ bar and chain and the six pack of oil for the extra year warranty. Within a week and only half a chord worth of wood cut I started smelling burning plastic then all the sudden an awful noise from the bottom end.

I powered down the saw and took it straight to my dealer. Dealer determined it had smoked a crank bearing. They rebuilt it under warranty and within two tanks of fuel the same smell of plastic was back and the noise as well.

Took back to dealer today so they can do whatever to the POS. UPDATE: The second trip to the dealer came back with a broken oiler worm gear. Then 1-1-22 I was cutting wood and the chain started throwing sparks and the engine locked up.

I let the saw cool down and took the clutch cover off and realized the damn clutch backer was off. So I pulled the bar, chain and clutch basket and noticed the clutch was completely blued. So 1-2-2022 I took it BACK for the third time now and the c-clip and washer holding the clutch basket to the crank were gone, the clutch had four broken locking tabs broken and they got under the clutch and destroyed the oiler, worm gear, oil lines and chewed up my housing.

Called Stihl USA’s warranty department and the next time something happens they will work with my dealer in making this right. I’m so sick of this thing and wish my MS291 we’re capable of running a 25″ bar.
