20 Best Chalk Board Paint (2022 Updated)

One of my jobs is that I write novels. I like to have some visual planning, but notebooks are useless because I lose them. I decided on a whim that I would create a blackboard on the wall above my desk so I could put my notes on something that would then be easy to clean and reuse.

This blackboard paint went on so easily and smoothly. I used a small roller and created a rectangle using masking tape to keep it in shape. The edging was created using a tester pot of the accent colour in my kitchen mixed with plenty of Valspar paint glitter.

The lights also came from Amazon and were very carefully attached using a staple gun. I have used it so much since and each time I remove the chalk, the blackboard paint underneath looks fresh. I have loads left too.

Unable to get my usual brand I went with a small pot of this to repaint 3 small outdoors menus. Two coats went on fine and drying time was around two hours. All was well until I tried to write anything to be clear Im using chalk pens which normally work very well with usual brand.

Tries two sets of pens of different types to no avail. Impossible to write clear and legible lettering and have given up. Will just have to hope usual brand arrives in time. If using chalk pens id avoid.

I am not an avid painter dont like it and was unsure of what to buy but this was a good choice. It was so easy to use and when Id finished painting the board it looked like a job done by a professional now thats something for me.

I like the fact that the paint was not thick and gloopy it meant no thick lines and a very smooth finish. Washed off paintbrush very easily too and I only used a small amount to cover the whole blackboard.

I also used a foam roller on a smooth surface. I painted animal shape outlines so the kids could color them with colored chalk any color they wanted. They love coloring the monkey purple and the cow green with yellow spots (Green Bay Packer colors).

I used one can to paint a 36″ x 36″ area with a foam roller and four thin coats. I cured for two days and then seasoned. Regular chalk erases easily. I use a magic eraser to remove chalk marker. Regular use x 1 month so far and all is well.

It’s almost March! Bring us closer to spring! This chalkboard paint does a great job of covering up what is left over from my previous picture after cleaning. It is quick drying too.

This bottle will do a few small sized projects. The consistency is thick and spreads evenly. Per the instructions make sure to vary the directions of the strokes-up/down one coat, left/right next coat- to ensure full coverage.

My only complaint is that there are a few lines that are visible after it dried. Maybe a rookie mistake?.

This paint is great for DIY projects. I’ve used a few of the colors. I would recommend using the special chalk paint brushes if you want to avoid streaks. I noticed more streaks with lighter colors.

People have mentioned in reviews that white paint has turned yellow. It’s technically not the sealer it’s actually the tannins in the wood (google it) that are pulled through the paint. If you are painting a piece of furniture pale you need to do a layer of oil based undercoat to block tannins from bleeding through.

You also need to allow all paint to cure for at least 24hours before applying a sealer, freshly dried paint can’t be sealed straight away, it will lift that paint. So many people leave negative reviews because it’s actually their inexperience that causes issues.

I have been painting furniture full time for 8 years and this product when used correctly is amazing. But it’s only flaw is that you should never leave any areas thick, you want a thin layer as it will go white on dark colours or yellow on pale colours in the thick areas.

But a thin layer will never go yellow all over that is absolutely tannins. If you are using it for the first time get a scrap piece of wood and paint it and try it out first don’t blame products for your failure.

Used this to paint a solid oak file cabinet. I normally love RustOleum products and loved the color of this, so thought it would be a win. I used two coats, allowing 2 hours of dry time between the coats.

The final result looks TERRIBLE. It is incredibly streaky- some spots look like it actually has two different colors of paint, other spots look like they are still wet. There are brush strokes in addition to the streakiness.

After paying nearly $30 for one small can of this paint, I am NOT happy- especially because now I am going to have to buy another paint to paint over this, and spend even more time on this project that I really need to get done.

VERY unhappy.

Is very thin but also leaves a nice clean coat, when using a good quality brush, a light sanding prior to third coat left it very smooth indeed. Its thin and does not need days of stirring before application, need little on the brush at a time, so can get really neat edges, without tape assuming the person applying it has some coordination, of course.

I used this on one of the glass photo frames to convert them as chalk board. 2 coats of paint on glass and allowed 24 hrs before seasoning with chalk. They are pretty thick and adheres well…

We painted an outdoor wooden storage box lid with the Specialty Chalk Board Paint (Black). It went on nicely, easy clean up on the brushes, chalk works on it, the kids love it and so do we. We colour on it and leave cute little messages.

We painted it at the begininning of summer (in ontario), we are now almost 3/4 through summer and the paint has started to chip and peel around the edging of the lid and along wood cracks throughout.

I can see it needing to be re-applied by next summer.

If you really want you and everything you hold dear a splattered matte black mess then this is for you. If not, AVOID. Tried 3 cans – all complete failures. Drips everywhere, either barely sprays, or yeets itself all over the world.

After 5 attempts of spraying and re-sanding my piece of metal I finally have something nice. In the meantime – literally impossible to use consistently.

Let me tell you, I’ve never seen a spray can that spits like these do. I purchased two cans, and at first, I thought that the one I got was defective, but after getting to the second, I feel like these just sputter by default.

No amount of shaking, allowing a proper distance, or waiting for the stars to align seemed to solve the issue. Nice to look at if you manage not to get the overdrips onto things or spray in very short bursts.

Works just like any spray paint, and like discount chalkboard. The chalk makes a pretty loud screetching noise and doesn’t exactly go on like butter, but yeah, it works. The versatility and price makes up for everytjing else: just make sure you sand your surface first.

Absolutely love this color! Perfect for an Easter project I have going on. I love the Martha Stewart brand instead of the other cheap brands. With this brand you only need a little bit of everything and only one coat.

I noticed that with the cheap craft brand it’s very run down with water and hate it.

Put one coat on, no problem. Let it dry fro 12+ hours. put second coat on (as is recommended), it started cracking and peeling up. waited 1. 5 hrs, put a third coat on and it was literally wiping off.

Literally followed the directions to a T and was then able to scrub it off with minimal effort and a paper towel. I’d give it zero stars if I could. Thanks to Michaels for the refund and recommendation of another product.

I used this to cover a chalkboard that had a nice wooden frame. I used a piece of a kitchen sponge because I had nothing else, and it actually dried very smoothly. The chalk pen wiped off very cleanly after the first time I drew on it.

When on smooth and easily managed to get minimal brush strokes, but I used this on glass and it peeled off easily after being fully dry for days. My fault for using the wrong surface. However when putting on a second coat, the first coat came off on the brush.

Won’t buy again.

This chalkboard paint worked perfectly on the race medal holder that I made. It is dark black and not see through at all. Writing on it with chalk is a breeze.

it is very wet so have to watch out to make sure the layers are even and it will stain. I’m not sure if the date on it meant it was produced in 2021 or it expired in 2021. I used it for cardboard and clear glass.

The cardboard was easy but the clear jar took a few days to do the layers. Jar lids were also easy but I think because it wasn’t a completely flat surface there was some chipping so I had to do another layer but it worked.

Kind of would have preferred a spray since I only had small brushes.

The paint worked nicely to refresh my chalkboards. I used a brush which did leave brush strokes. Next time I use it I will try a roller. Read and follow the directions. I let it dry longer than recommended between coats.

Then I let the final coat dry overnight. Don’t forget to prime afterward with chalk prior to using it as stated in the directions.

I first used a paint brush and could not get a good even coat – it worked better with a small sponge roller. I let it dry for days (I forgot about the project) I came back and used standard school chalk and it worked like a pen loosing it’s ink – half the chalk stayed half didn’t.

I did about a 6inch circle – painted the inner circle of a plastic plate.

I was in touch with customer service because it did not come out as a chalkboard surface. The responded with a question about how many coats I used and I replied 2 and then never heard back anything further.

I’d still buy your regular paint in the future because I love the non toxic feature but this was a fail so far.

Not the cheapest paint out there but my wife and children are very sensitive to harsh smells, including those from typical paint. I shove my nose in the can and still can hardly detect an aroma if any at all.

Covers well and color was as expected. Very satisfied.

First tried Ecos to paint a beat up old train table with this product four years ago and it still looks amazing despite all the play. So we purchased another gallon to transform an old set of bunk beds.

Used a sprayer and they look amazing!!!.

Bought this for the back of a door to the cupboard in my daughter’s room. So impressed with the coverage of this paint- super satisfying! It looks so good I decided to paint the outside as well, which I was previously going to fablon.

Looks fab! Took two coats and I found the best result was with a paint pad, strokes horizontal on first application and vertical on the second. Dries a lovely matt so you can also tell where your painting on the second coat- always helpful!.

Its paint. Its black. Its very good at making boards go a very dark colour. What else? Oh yes, it dries quickly.

NOthing to add to the other reviews except to say the tin recommends using a fine synthetic brush to apply but doesn’t mention rolling. The brush method works fine (and it’s a really easy cold water cleanup) but I can confirm it also goes on really well with a foam roller.

Just made up a bunch of pub blackboards which involved rolling it on to a variety of substrates (OSB, MDF, cement board) and they all came out brilliantly.
