20 Best Channels For 5Ghz (2022 Updated)

*There are know issues with this Router that I did not know at the time of purchase* Review is based on approximately 3 weeks of use, I run a home network with a NAS and connect to remote computers regularly, so I have a fair handle on operating routers networking basics.

Wifi Range and the most basic functions seem fine. Overall, this is an attempt to make a feature rich device that unfortunately seems poorly coded and designed in practice. The two most important issues in my experience are: 1.

On the web interface: The network map does not show all connected devices. This is can actually be a security issue for obvious reasons. That aside, it also creates quite a frustrating experience if you need to use your network map for reserving ip addresses, and other features that require selecting a connected device.

To be clear, this router IS serving IP’s to these devices, but they are not present in the list of connected devices. The workaround to this is completely unnecessary and requires opening a guest network, which again, is its own set of issues.

2. Wan Port speed (internet connection): Apparently a known issue that i was not aware of is the auto-negotiating (switching) of 1000Mb/s speeds to 100 Mb/s speeds on the WAN port. Obviously, this means if you have a cable\fiber connection, you may find that your speeds are choked due to this router switching for unknown reasons.

The fix for this requires some comfort with command line interfaces and is probably more than the average user wants to worry about. The router does of a good set of features that any router in this range should provide, though I am confident a different make would prove much more stable, im personally looking into a TP archer series.

I already had one of these but wanted to establish a entry point into a working wifi mesh without spending a lot. I’m not happy with the current state of pricing for mesh offerings plus I had one of these units already.

This was a POC for me (and became my daily driver) and I was waiting for Asus to establish something stable with their aimesh offering. Now they have. Well, for me and my house this works and I have to recommend for someone who is wanting to vet mesh at their own place.

But I would go a step further in that if you can also hardline these (for backplane communications), then it is very much worth it. I also wanted to establish a mesh on a router that worked / behaved like a normal router with all the features (like vpn server/client, sharing a usb device, port forwarding and firewall rules etc.

). I didn’t want to lose those features and pay more. 3 of these fit the bill for me. My problems started with having my provider’s router in the basement. I needed an efficient way to more accurately distribute that access throughout my house (basement, main floor, top floor) and this unit fit the bill without me having to spend 400+.

And I don’t even have established cat5 wiring. I an using the (eth over power) copper extender from tplink. This shortcuts my full access to all of my fiber bandwidth, but allows my routers to stay in communication without having to sacrifice my 5ghz band for intra-router communications.

So normally you need at least a triband and use one of your 5ghz (or existing eth wiring) for intra router communications. Even if you just want to experience/test a mesh in your household, use these to vet it all out.

Obviously things stand in the way of signal and you have to decide where your compromises are. But for me this all works out great. It will be even better once I have true cat5 or 6 wiring in place. So if you’re looking for a solid router solution but also an entry level mesh, I can’t recommend them more especially if you already have the wiring in place.

I just had to work with what I had so far. All mesh work aside, this is also a very solid router. My main unit I have had in place since probably 2015/16. It has remained rock solid all that time and Asus continues to offer firmware updates.

(for Aimesh as well). I use the vpn service as well to vpn into home when I need to as that was a very important feature for me. Their UI has always been straightforward for me and if you’re comfortable with that (even if you’re not, there’s a ton of docs online) these family of routers from asus are great!.

The ASUS routers have been pretty reliable for me. I replaced my older ASUS AC56 with this one. While multiple Linksys routers seemed to die on me after 1 or 2 years, I had my previous ASUS for almost 5.

I was using it as a cheap NAS for my 8 Tb RAID via the USB 3. 0 port, but when I increased the disk to a 12 Tb RAID, the previous router just couldn’t handle indexing the larger disk. I had hoped a more recent model could.

No such luck. The AC66 is unsurprisingly not much of an improvement from the AC56. It also couldn’t handle my RAID so I just gave up on having a NAS. There are a few enhancements to the ASUS firmware for port forwarding and such and there are three fixed external antennas so the router is forced to lay flat (the AC56 had one internal antenna and could save space by standing vertically).

The placement of the USB ports also changed and their indicator lights removed. The AC66 uses the same processor and has the same memory capacity as the older model but adds AI Mesh support. However, since I don’t use repeaters in my small home, I’ve observed no major changes in network reliability or performance and in fact saw some erratic behavior from some of my networked devices.

A minor concern, but I expected better from a newer router. Out of the box, it’s probably fine for a beginner but my custom network had manually configured IP addresses and I had to spend a hairy time reworking the router’s configuration back to recognize my devices since ASUS used a different class C subnet from the previous router.

Anyway, it does the job for a bargain price and you get what you pay for.

I used this product to replace a Netgear Nighthawk that was the main router which I used to DHCP the wired stuff in my office, which I had a Google WiFi 3-pack Mesh attached to that provided WiFi. Not being a “networking person” I didn’t realize it would make the wired and wireless units not visible to each other.

So I replaced the Nighthawk with this upgraded Nest pair and meshed all 5 units. But before I “joined” the original Google WiFi units to this NEST mesh, I did a bunch of testing and I was blown away by the speed of these WiFi units.

I have 100Mbps Cable Internet with 10Mbps upload. Using my cell phone and the built in speed test in the Google Home app, I constantly got 110Mbps down and around 10. 5-11Mbps upload everywhere in the house.

The tough spots were out in the garage, the driveway, and backyard, so I added the other 3 older Google WiFi units and now I have wireless that I believe is comparable to being wired. There are a few wired devices in my son’s room which are now using the older Google WiFi unit and they’re all just as fast as the wireless units.

We used to use a Powerline adapter with a switch for his wired stuff and the speed was terrible. That’s no longer the case with this router and the mesh. The best thing about this product is that it’s Google Home Aware, so if you’re “hey google” and not “alexa” it’s a great choice.

Plus the bonus with the WiFi Point is the built in speaker and Google Assistant. We replaced a tablet and bluetooth speaker with the Point in our kitchen and the sound is amazing. It’s not designed to “crank up the volume” but if you want some background music in your home then this thing will satisfy for sure.

All in all, I couldn’t be happier with it. I took the Netgear Nighthawk out of service and now it’s Google WiFi all the way.

I have self installed this product and used it for a few weeks. The Google Router is my primary router for my cable internet connection. I receive the full speed of my purchased Internet connection of 200Mbps Down/100Mbps Up without any issues.

The product provides WiFi coverage through my entire house with the two WiFi points deployed. This provide coverage in my previous dead spots. The AP’s use a signal network name for both 2. 4Ghz and 5Ghz making it easier to connect and move through the house without loosing concoction.

The Guest WiFi network is not great. When set up it works but I found it often dropped my guests. The main network doesn’t have this issue. Sharing my devices like the xbox or printer worked well when the guest network was running properly.

My guests could share minecraft with the Windows 10 computers and Xbox without issues. This is likely a software issue that will be resolved with updates. The software to control the network devices is on your cell phone.

This can be Google WiFi or Google Home. I already have google smart devices so this was an easy add to my home. When my cable connection goes down I lose visibility into my network. This is a huge drawback compared to my previous router.

Luckily services in my area are very reliable and this will not be an issue often. The inability to control the device without an active Internet connection and the glitches in the guest network knock a star off the product.

I would buy this system again.

Designed as a wired base router with a pair of wireless remote nodes the Nest system was easy to install and the configuration was straightforward tho not automatic. This system (2200 series) will operate with the earlier generation 1200 series.

Easily supported 200 MB service. For my use the only downside is the 2200 series does not permit Ethernet backhaul from the main router to the remote units. For that reason I added a pair of 1200 series nodes as the previous version does offer wired backhaul.

Management and configuration is done via an app, and mine performs well on my iPhone.

I have other TP-Link products that I have been satisfied with, so I bought this router to upgrade the speed from an older Netgear router I was using. It is pretty much an upgrade on every level. The range is much farther.

I can now get wi-fi signal out in my detached garage. It can handle network demand of three TVs, two gaming PCs and half a dozen other phones and tablets. My work PC’s wireless connection speed went up 157 Mbps after upgrading from a wireless N adapter (Wi-Fi 4).

And it cost me about $70 as of Feb. 2022, so it definitely didn’t break the bank. The reason I didn’t give it five stars, despite being a pretty great upgrade, is the fact that it just would not work well with a previously 100% reliable and working TP-Link Wireless N USB adapter.

All the other devices in my house use 5 GHz, but this older adapter could only connect at 2. 4 GHz. On Win10 64, it would connect and say it had internet, but then pages wouldn’t load and apps that needed internet wouldn’t work.

Sometimes it would reconnect itself somehow, other times I had to manually disconnect and reconnect to get it working again. This would happen every two to five minutes. The adapter was for my work computer, so I need consistent and reliable connection, and this was obviously unacceptable.

Router has latest firmware, turned on/off OneMesh, changed 2. 4 GHz channel, relocated router and adapter. nothing would stop the adapter from losing connection every two to five minutes. A quick google search shows that it’s not just me with this problem.

pretty common issue with their 2. 4 GHz support with newer routers. The next day I went out and bought an ASUS AC1200 USB Wi-Fi adapter (another $30) that has 5 GHz support. It works great and it’s way faster, but I was mainly concerned about a reliable connection, which it also has no problems.

I’m just a little ticked because it feels like I was “forced” into upgrading because something that previously worked fine with LESSER hardware was made non-functional because of this “upgrade. ” So my main point is that if you are planning on upgrading to this router from a wireless N or older model router, you might have to plan on upgrading your wireless adapters, too, if they can’t use 5 GHz.

Otherwise, a very good value for the upgrade to Wi-Fi 6.

I bought this as a replacement for my Telstra router and despite some initial hiccups I’m glad I did. Pros: * Speeds, WiFi 6 and WPA3 support are great. * Can actually change the DNS settings to whatever you like.

* Has support for static routes and WPA2-Enterprise which is a nice bonus. * Has a decent advanced config page with a good amount of settings to mess around with * Has an app that lets you configure your network from your phone, however I haven’t used it Cons: * Setup OOTB was a bit of a pain.

It pays to read the manual even if you’re technically inclined as the settings required for a HFC NBN connection are different than FTTN and FTTP. Namely I had to set the MAC address to “Clone current device address” for a connection to a cable modem (i.

e HFC NBN) to work. I wish this was documented in the setup wizard as well. * IPv6 support: Furthermore, this was also difficult. TP-Link’s terminology doesn’t seem match up with the documentation that most Aussie ISPs provide for v6 support.

In particular on my HFC setup I had to set the IPv6 WAN to Dynamic with the “Get IPv6 Address” set to “Non-address” and the LAN set to “SLAAC+RDNSS” for it to work. Failing to do the former would seem to generate IPv6 addresses on the LAN side but prevent routing out to the internet.

* WiFi range is a bit less than I’d like, however this may the result of “Smart Connect” (band steering) being enabled. Overall I’m extremely satisfied with this router even with the above issues.

I purchased this router a few weeks ago, it has exceeded my expectations. I bought this to replace an existing Archer 1750 router, as we needed something that could keep up with 20+ devices and 4k streaming with minimal issues.

This router handles the demands of my household with no issues. Some of the reviews mentioned the lack of customizing the settings. This router has the ability to modify down to granular settings, by default the Admin site is set to basic, you’ll need to toggle to advanced to open up all the settings.

For example, I wanted a dedicated SSID for my bedroom TV so that it would be the only item connected to ensure seamless streaming. I went into advanced, turned off the tri-band and now have three SSIDs available to connect to, the 2.

4, 5g, and the secondary 5g. This router is also mesh ready, I paired it with a TP Link extender that was mesh compatible and now have a solid connection throughout my home without having to switch between router and extender.

TP-Link customer support is solid as well. I have fiber internet and wanted to use the router directly from my ethernet wall outlet, without the use of a modem. After receiving my PPPoE credentials from my internet provider, I called TP-Link and they talked me through the settings to configure this router saving me a modem rental fee.

First off, I’m not a techie. have enough back ground to build my own computers and navigate through most technical devices but far from an expert. I bought two of these. The first was as a router and the second as an access point.

Both were easy to setup without any issues. I ended up buying two because the router was placed in an office on the far side of the house in a wooden entertainment center. That effected the strength of the signal, so I opted to buy a second one.

I hardwired it running Cat 6 in the attic and dropped it down in the living room to create the access point (you can do it wirelessly as well but want to get the full signal strength to the living room).

I thought about buying a regular access point, but when you start comparing the data speed and number of bands, you basically end up spending $300 anyway and getting less data speed compared to using this as an access point.

Plus, by treating this as an access point, it gave me 8 LAN ports to hardwire all my devices in the living room, so I thought it was a better deal. Also, fyi, I recycled an old 10 year router at best buy for a 15% off coupon.

When this went on sell for $319, I used the 15% off and picked it up for $271. not a bad deal saving $78! I won’t get into all the data speed measurements as it varies on usage, but what I will say is by having two of these on opposite sides of the house, I get my full 5gz/2gz speed through most of the house.

I also love the fact you get the option of splitting the ssid between 5gz and 2gz or combining it into one as well as the access point uses the same ssid to be able to hand off when walking across the house.

I have only started to use the product but enjoy the ease of seeing which client devices are connected to your network, the data usage of each device, the ease of turning on 160mhz on the 5gz band, etc.

I still need to play with the guest network, parent controls, and other security features. The only drawback for me is it didn’t have WPA3 or a WAN that supported larger than 1G speed. But, I figured the WPA3 is just a security feature and the likely hood that I would ever get (and afford) over 1G of internet speed is highly unlikely in the near feature.

I think I saw Comcast offering 2G for almost $300 a month, ouch! Anyway, this router find my needs and both units have been working flawlessly since purchase.

I bought AX88U because I can’t stand for the random reboot from Netgear’s RAX120v2, which is otherwise a fantastic router. I used to own AC86U, so I was hoping AX88U to be a familiar, stable and highly customizable router.

It didn’t disappoint. Unlike RAX120v2, this is a full Wi-Fi 6 certified router. I believe RAX120v2 lacks “Target Wake Time,” so it isn’t Wi-Fi 6 certified. Though I do want to point out that RAX120v2 offers much better throughput and noticeably lower latency on both wired and wireless connections.

AX88U also lacks a 5G/2. 5G LAN/WAN connector. These were in fact the reasons I bought RAX120v2, but it’s simply too unstable to use. Imaging waiting minutes just for the router to reboot.

The connectors for the power adapter and network cable is under the unit instead of the back of the unit, which puts a strain on both the cable end and power connector due to the tight fit, and tight bend the internet cable and power cord has to make.

On top of that the wire is too thick for the power cord, and the rubber boot is too large. If they used the same power adapter as the AC2200 it would relieve 75% of problems they might have. That adapter has a thinner cable, smaller hot shoe, and smaller boot on the connector that will allow the cable to make the bend it needs to without putting a strain on the unit.

Also the connectors needs to go on the back of the unit since underneath the unit there is not enough space to hook up two CAT 5 cables, and a power adapter. Reset button and the power button is also in this cramp space.

I do not know how the speed is on this or the range due to the power going off on the unit three times during set up. First Node I could not get to stay on to even get the APP started. Last but not least, put the identification label on the back of the unit as well.

Hard to read the set up pass word trying to turn this upside down to read small writing. I would not recommend this device to anyone until they do a redesign of the units. I cannot imagine that an electrical engineer was involved in this design.

You never put cabling in any situation that it will put a bind on the cable or connectors. This design puts a bind on both.

I have had this system for over a year, bought to replace my aging Google Wifi. I had to stop using this and go back to Google WiFi as the Velop kept disconnecting and would not auto reconnect without unplugging and plugging it back in.

So these just set in a box for the majority of the time I have owned them. I contacted support several times and the suggestion was to go through the setup process, which I ended up doing about 5 times before I just went back to the old Google WiFi setup.

I just moved into a new house which has fiber and decided to give these a try again. They do seem more stable now, and seemed to be working well for about a week, but if they ever lose connection getting them to connect again is a manual process.

I am also getting very poor speed over Wifi, at the router it is great, but on my phone and computers its terrible. All this and I haven’t even gotten to the garbage app. IF it works (ie: actually allows you to connect) it is OK, not great, still a one star compare to Googles WiFi app.

It is just very frustrating given the cost of these. They are priced as premium WiFi devices but in reality they are far from it. Avoid these and buy literally anything else.

First I purchased the hydra plus ax6600. Non of my apple devices would connect. I had to change several settings on the devices and then had to separate the SSIDs for 2. 4 and 5 networks. I returned it after two weeks and purchased the Velop ax5300 two pack.

This worked great for a little over a month. Then the child node would connect to the parent node. Four days on the phone with tech support, tried resetting and repairing the child. Ode with the parent node didn’t work.

I finally got it to connect myself without tech support but the light would then turn yellow indicating bad signal strength. The unit was in the same location it worked great in since day one, but now it had bad signal strength.

Tech support had me switch the parent and child nodes. Same issue. Child node light only stayed blue for a short time. Then they had me move the child node closer. It is 16’ away and I still have a yellow light.

Devices plugged into the child node have horrible data speeds and the location is completely useless for a whole home mesh network. What’s the point. For four days I have been told The tech has to go back to upper management and see if they will approve a replacement.

System worked great until it didn’t. Ow it’s just a modern looking paperweight. Should have gotten a netgear.

Mijn problemen waren hiermee veel eenvoudiger (en goedkoper) op te lossen dan ik had durven hopen. Het instellen van de router is zeer eenvoudig, maar voor mensen met minder ervaring kunnen de hoeveelheid instellingen wat afschrikken.

Er is een mogelijkheid om een stappenplan te volgen voor de basisconfiguratie, welke al meer dan voldoende is voor de basis gebruiker. Dit kan vanaf je laptop en/of vanaf een APP. Eenvoudiger kan niet.

I setup my router just 2 days ago, but so far everything is great. It seems to be well designed and built, and the QIS (Quick Internet Setup) software worked flawlessly. I especially like that the button for resetting to factory defaults is recessed, so it’s nearly impossible to press it accidently.

The one shortcoming so far was the included documentation. There were two different printed Quick Start Guides and a full PDF manual on CD. These documents contradicted each other concerning the order of the setup steps.

I was able to figure out a logical sequence and made it through the setup just fine on the first attempt. The problem was only with the written documentation: once I was into the QIS program everything was very straight forward.

Once the router is fully booted and a computer is connected via an ethernet cable, the QIS software loads automatically. There were numerous parameters mentioned in the documentation that I didn’t need to enter.

Apparently the QIS software was able to determine those things on its own.

This router replaces a Tenda 2300 that was in service for about 4 years and finally failed. I selected the Asus router due to it having a good price point, good reviews online and reported signal range.

The router has a very large physical footprint and requires a large surface to set it on. The setup was rather difficult and the Asus support was marginal (at best) and I was hung up on which is totally unacceptable.

The range was not as good as my old Tenda. And even through the Asus has four antennas as compared to my old router having three, the range was not as good. I had to widen the channel bandwidth to the maximum to get whole house coverage.

So the bottom line is that I am a little disappointed with the purchase and do not recommend it to others.

I purchased this router on January 19, 2022 from Amazon. I received an email from ASUS telling me I could receive an additional 90 days of warranty for my honest review. I replaced my older Linksys router with the ASUS.

This what I found. My wifi coverage weakened with my old router as soon as I would get 40 feet away. My entire home has great wifi coverage with the new ASUS router. I am getting triple the speed when measured with Speedtest with my new ASUS router.

I would not need to be given extra warranty to state these facts but this ASUS router is far superior to what I had.

I wrote a 1 star review for the first router I received (which is still posted). I ended up exchanging that router for a replacement. This one worked perfectly out of the box and was easy to set up. The extenders I have I really don’t need, but use them for my printer and other equipment that requires ethernet.

Streaming is instantaneous on any of my equipment and, while I am not a gamer, this router handles all of my home network service traffic and printers with no problem at all and it worked out of the box in less than 15 minutes of set up to assemble and configure it with all of my network and extenders.

So hopefully you get one the first time that isn’t a dud. What other reviews have said about TPLink Support is accurate. I sent over an hour trying to get the first one working and never got the email follow-up I was promised to finish troubleshooting.

The lady I spoke to kept asking me about which LEDS were lit (There is only one big symbol LED on this thing—I told her this repeatedly and told her it was a C5400X gaming router. she kept asking if the world LED was lit up.

there is no world led. *sigh*) So when it works, it works very well. when it is not functioning as expected, I suggest you just get it replaced if it is a recent purchase. B&H replaced my router in a week with the RMA process and even though that was inconvenient, it was still easier than dealing with TPLINK support.

I bought the ASUS AX3000 to replace the single-band, WiFi 4 router that is built into my AT&T modem. There are simply too many 2. 4GHz networks bleeding over into our house from the neighbors, and the AT&T router is too weak to get the full circuit bandwidth anywhere beyond about 10 feet from it.

The AX3000 is incredibly easy to set up. Before starting, I Googled how to shut off the built-in wifi radio and put the AT&T modem/router into pass-through mode. The ASUS router app is really nice, but I preferred using the on-board interface to set things up by wiring in our desktop PC.

I set up both 2. 4GHz and 5GHz networks using different SSID’s so that I could tell them apart. (I am not a fan of the “Smart Connect” feature that uses a single SSID and can move devices between 2. 4GHz and 5GHz to try to optimize range and speed.

) Two devices in the house only support 2. 4GHz, but the rest are all on the 5GHz network, including iPhones running WiFi 6 and a variety of devices including Apple TVs and Roku sticks using WiFi 5. Using a speedtest app on my iPhone 12, I then methodically checked every room in the house before connecting all the other devices.

We have a 3000 sq foot, two-story home with another 1000 sq ft in the unfinished basement. The AX3000 sits in the loft near the center of the second floor (great central location). The results? I got the full bandwidth of our internet circuit in every room of the house and in the basement, despite the signal strength sometimes being as low as 35%! This router has great features, a good user interface and a nice companion app.

But it’s the combination of WiFi 6 and other advanced tech that makes its performance shine. I have even noticed my Chromebook getting better battery life now that it can operate on 802. 11ac (WiFi 5) along with a stronger signal.

The AX3000 is not the cheapest home router, but if you need range, throughput, and the ability to support a fleet of modern devices, it is a great investment.

So, decided to cut the cable BUT use some of the money to subscribe to a VPN. The VPN company stated the ISP router would not be adaptable unless I did a bunch of tech stuff like flash it. I can build PCs, I can do very basic things and when shown or told I can pretty much make anything work.

Chose Asus because I like their product, just built a PC with an Asus mobo (Z490 ROG Strix E) and an Asus monitor (PA278) This router is supposed to work well with the VPN company I chose. First upon the simple (and it is simple) set-up, I received no signal from the modem to the router.

Called Asus and they helped me get a signal. I was willing to put that down as perhaps I made a mistake. Tried to install the VPN and when VPN was activated a loss of internet on the PC but not the 2 Rokus.

Contacted the VPN company who worked on it from their end and couldn’t find an issue. Contacted Asus again and again, they helped but when the VPN was on the PC was offline EVEN hardwired into the router.

Had a professional come in to set up the network. He did but VPN drops download from 200+MBPS – >50. He told me to contact the VPN company again. they had me run some configs and nothing. I would call again, but and I know it is something that companies do to keep prices down, but when I can’t understand a single word the phone help is saying (because I can’t be online if working on the internet with possible outages, due to the working on it.

) So, I won’t call them, asking them to repeat and talk slower makes me feel embarrassed. I rarely complain about the telephone outsources because it is what it is, but Asus’ by far the worst. So, while it FINALLY, gets me signals to everything I need the fact that a hardwired PC’s download speed drops 75% is frustrating and I would return it but with the market the way it is with stock on shelves down (bought the last one) and the need for one that handles wifi6 AND VPN there may not be anything else available.

It breaks my heart to have to write this review because as I stated I truly like Asus products.

You should have bought a router for YOUR TI purposes only!! this is a router that’s meant for maybe an apartment or a 2 possibly 3 bedroom home not for an office building! it’s no wonder it didn’t give results like you wanted and it failed.

this is a entry level Wi-Fi router you should have kept with the Netgear nighthawk or something similar. IT ALSO SOUNDS LIKE YOUR PLACEMENT OF THE ROUTER WAS ALSO A BIG REASON TOO. These are 101 facts and you claim to say your I.

T if I was in your position there would have been no way in hell would have bought this router I would have went with something higher in for my “clients”. this router performs exceptionally well with a range of probably 150 to 200 ft with obstructing walls I haven’t had any issues and I’ve had this router for almost a year now the AI protection software works perfectly and blocks what needs to be blocked.

The ASUS router app it’s perfect, easy setup, only took me about 15 minutes it also supports AI Wi-Fi mesh systems so any other Asus Wi-Fi mesh routers you can connect to this and it’s Wi-Fi 6!!! unfortunately as far as the price is concerned I bought it when it was $70 now it’s 159 on Amazon highly recommend this router and remember, if you have a long house an older home that’s brick or anything with thick sheetrock look somewhere else.

Possibly look in to an AI mesh system.

The VPN feature of this product is useless if you want to access your internal network. The product has the option for enabling it as a “VPN Server”, but doesn’t allow access to your internal subnet range.

Having read forums of similar issues, responses from TP-Link have been that the VPN traffic once connect to the router is still treated as “external”, so you have to open up ports using NAT and expose your internal network, as you do not have any control in the NAT options for where the external traffic is coming from.

If you could choose the source as the VPN traffic it wouldn’t be so much of an issue, but this cannot be done. This makes the VPN server feature of this router totally pointless. There is a hack for manually creating a route on your VPN connected computer to access the internal network, but this has been flakey to get operational and inconsistent.

Having chatted to TP-Link support directly about it, they claim that “This router is a VPN pass-through only”. Yet the router clearly has the option for enabling it as a “VPN Server” and is spruced as being VPN capable.

If TP-Link allowed you to issue IP’s to VPN connections from your internal address range, or allowed routing between the two networks, this would fix this issue. Yet the request has fallen on deaf ears.

Don’t buy it for its supposed VPN capabilities, you will be disappointed.
