20 Best Cheap Birding Binoculars (2022 Updated)

I received these for my birthday and I love them! The clarity is amazing. I am very happy with them, and would highly recommend them for viewing birds and wildlife in the back yard, on the trail or on the ocean.

I cannot get these lenses to focus properly. I was really looking forward to using these. When I focus on an object is anything but clear.

They seem compact enough to carry around my neck on an upcoming cruise. Although with the extra iPhone holder you may need a tripod to take photograph to avoid a wobbly photo as when viewing from distance with phone camera it needs to be very still.

Over the years I’ve purchased some very cheap binoculars. This year, with a trip to Yellowstone coming up, I decided enough was enough and to purchase a true pair of binoculars. I’m so glad I did. Binoculars are those kind of things where you feel okay buying a pair for $10 at a big box store and you think it’s good enough.

Then you try these binoculars and you realize what you have been missing. Crystal clear optics. No fiddling with each eyepiece and eye fatigue. Just a clear image. There is one dial in the middle that adjusts for both eyes at once, making it easy to get in focus.

I have an astigmatism in my right eye, but had no issue seeing anything clearly with these. These worked very well for Yellowstone. I was to watch some wildlife from across a valley and get some good details.

With that said, I wished I would have spent a little more and gotten a higher magnification set for Yellowstone, but these worked very well. I started using them for bird watching, which these are very well suited for.

But if you want something to take to a national park, get Nikon with more power. I’m still pleased with these, and it has taught me that your really get what you pay for.

It was slightly less robust than the Bushnell Legacy WP 10×50, and, I assume, the discontinued Bushnell 8×42, and the warranty is somewhat less helpful. However, this Nikon Aculon 8×42 binocular’s quality for the price can not be beat by any other available model.

My wife finds it easy to use. The case is junk, wo a strap, and too small to add closed-cell blue foam/ensolite padding to the inside. Find a strapped shoulder bag with a real zipper (not spiral type) AND a flap/strap with a clip to backup the zipper for safety.

Use a Ziplock bag inside to keep the binoc dust free. The binoc strap plastic adjuster is NOT secure, despite my very careful following the installation steps. Experiment (carefully) to find the best length for you, and sew the strap to that fixed length with durable thread.

The eyepiece cap is good. The objective caps are useless because they can not be fixed to a cord/the binoc, and will soon be lost.

Have been using these for a few weeks now and here is my feedback. The optical quality is excellent for the money with a fairly wide field of view. Not too heavy or bulky for a full sized nitrogen filled binocular.

I get the impression that corners may have been cut slightly with the build, the white branding is already rubbing off after only a few uses, and the bag and straps are also pretty basic. That’s not to say they don’t feel well made – the binoculars have a solid feel to them and it’s clear that Celestron have focused on making the optics as good as possible.

The image clarity is exceptional and with the 42mm lens the brightness is great even in low light, which makes these perfect for birdwatching. I would highly recommend these binoculars for anyone looking for a decent set without a premium price tag.

PROS – Excellent optics – Bright, clear image – Precise focusing – Good value CONS – Superficial rubbing away – Case and strap not the best – Focus wheel squeaks slightly on occasion.

My rating is based on quality/price ratio and at just over £100 for the 8×42 these are never going to be the best binoculars out there, however, at this price point I think they are excellent. I bought these for my son to use on wildlife walks.

I opted for the 8×42 as I felt anything with more magnification wouldn’t provide a steady enough image for him. I had also read that they fold close together so would be ok for his smaller head and they do fold close enough for him to use comfortably.

They seem fairly well made and the image is bright and easy to focus with little chromatic aberrations. Overall I think these are very good for binoculars of the price and would be excellent for beginners.

I would be less sure if they were at their full price of £160 as there might be a better options at that price point.

Just received the Celestron UpClose G2 7 X 35 Binoculars. I like to say that these binoculars which I am going to use for Astronomy or Terrestrial Observing will be great. They are very easy to hold and they are not as heavy which makes holding them for long periods nice.

The Binoculars have a very handy carry bag and the Binoculars are great in the carry bag. The carry bag is great it will make storing the Binoculars in an excellent manner. The Carry bag will keep out the dust plus the Lens caps are great too it will keep the objective lenses clean and no dust will get on the Objective Lenses.

It also has a cleaning cloth which is great and an Instruction manual which is very handy. I love these Binoculars and I am glad I bought them from High Point Scientific.

I have bought the Celestron 7 X 35 UpClose G2 Binoculars – 71250 and I like it very much tonight was the first time I have seen the Moon and it was really nice to see it. I used these Binoculars and when I have seen the Moon I was steady, no shaking and the image wasn’t jumpy.

during the day I have seen little birds, a Chimney and trees. I have other Celestron Binoculars but these are my favorite Binoculars. When I have seen the Moon I feel that I can touch the moon and also I have seen Stars and star Constellations.

Both the Moon and Stars I feel that I am really upclose and I can really touch the Moon and Stars and Star Constellations. I am really very happy I have bought these Binoculars from High Point Scientific and I am going to buy another pair.

5 stars for value for the money, Celestron takes a page from a popular phone/tablet maker’s playbook by setting the stage via product presentation. The high-end and highly functional (product protection) packaging exudes the sense that Celestron is a mature company that knows what it’s doing.

The binoculars themselves did not disappoint. Solidly built, we selected this model over the higher magnification 25×70 because of the included/integrated and much needed tripod mount. These binos are very large so get a tripod that can handle them.

We use our job-site laser level tripod which is just sturdy enough. Did not notice any issues with optics as per some other reviews.

Can only be used on a tripod and thats not easy either. You need to be sat down and have binos at a workable eye level height. But they are hard work to use and very tiring at the same time. Poor focus.

Totally useless for astronomy!!!!!! Pathetic carrying bag and the lens covers are hopeless. Recently saw them outside at the Minehead RNLI station as a prop for a fund rising dummy to be looking through.

Just left outside in the rain! Thats the problem – they look good but they are rubbish. However to be fair to the makers they are cheap so what do you expect. A fake Rolex looks good but its not a Rolex.

I fear to get a useable binocular of this spec you would need to buy Zeiss or similar and spend over 3000. 00. Probably a lot more! As always in this world, the quality of what you buy depends on how much you spend.

My advice, for what its worth, its to buy an older quality second hand 7 x 50 pair of binoculars which is easy to use and will last a lifetime of properly cared for. Aim to spend around 200. 00 and you will get quality.

This is the first pair of binoculars I’ve ever bought. I’ve only ever used my dads old pair of Miranda 10×50’s and just assumed all binoculars were roughly the same. I wanted a pair with higher magnification to view the moon.

I was blown away by how much better these are and how crisp and clear the view is. They are very heavy and with this magnification they do suffer with image shake so I will be investing in a decent tripod.

My only criticism is the bag they come with is very flimsy with very little padding. I would have happily paid extra for a much better quality and more protective bag.

These binoculars are a little bit bigger than the miniatures. They feel substantial in your hand, and have a little weight to them, but not too heavy, as in the full size field glasses. I like that the field of view is larger than in the miniature ones I’ve had in the past.

The included neck strap is very comfortable, and the lens covers just flip down, but are attached, so no fear of losing them.

Top quality binoculars! I will recommend to my friends. Compact but slightly heavy. Seller exceeded expectations!

Clear view. Focus wheel and diopter are very smooth.Compact.They seem rugged have not been through abuse yet. Only flaw is that the lens cap covers fall off easy.

Simply Amazing. I have used almost every model of binocular and this is one of the best values for the money. Nikon glass is amazing, providing clear images and the construction is sturdy. Add the waterproof feature and you have a real winner.

This is great for backdoor bird watchers. If you are reading this review, chances are that you don’t need anything fancier than this set. No need to look further.

I compared these binos side by side to some Vortex Diamondback 12×50 binos that belong to my girlfriends dad. Both he and I thought they were identical in clarity and magnification. Furthermore, these Nikons are smaller and lighter.

Vortex does have a better warranty but I’d take these Nikons over Vortex Diamondbacks due to their performance and lower price.

I wanted a reasonably priced low-power pair of binoculars for searching out constellations and night sky objects prior to looking at them with my telescope. The Nikon ProStaff 3s 10×42 binoculars are outstanding.

They are lightweight, easy to transport, have a rubberized exterior for water-resistance and durability, and the 7 degree (TFOV) fits my needs perfectly. The eye cups can be adjusted to change eye relief if you wear glasses, there is a diopter adjustment, and the view through them is just excellent — bright and clear from one edge of the field to the other.

I absolutely love these binoculars! They are a great value.

I was pretty impressed by the write up for these binoculars and numerous 5 star reviews I read online when researching so duly ordered a pair of these primarily for bird-watching. I have been using for a couple of months now and here is what I’ve found.

They are that they are fairly lightweight, decent build quality, and the image clarity is brilliant. Not as bright compared in side by side comparison with more expensive pair one of my companions has but a feel a lot happier about replacing these should there be any mishaps! Excellent value for money if you ask me and a really good buy!.

This is a great pair of binoculars at an incredible price – Quite an improvement over my old 7X50 Bushnell’s. I thought that I was going to miss the toggle focus on the 7X50’s, but the 10X50 dial is handy and easy to move and holds its place better than the old glass.

Being able to use them as close as 9 feet is fabulous for seeing fine detail. The inter pupil distance stays set. The grip is sure and comfortable. The diopter setting stays in place and the eyepiece adjustments for eyeglasses are wonderful.

These 10X50’s are no harder to hold still than the 7X50’s and with the Nikon ProStaff Suspender Harness Binocular Strap, they don’t get in the way when they are not being used and require no effort to carry.

But more importantly, as a birder, the harness allows me get the binocs up to my eye fast without looking or groping for them. So I don’t have to take my eyes off of what I am looking at and trying to not loose sight of.

The optics are amazing – only one time have I had violet fringing and that was right at sunset. Haven’t had the same thing happen at sunset or under any other conditions since. They are used every day.

A roll of arts and craft heavy duty twist tie material will keep you from loosing the lens covers when the twist tie keeps them anchored to the holds for the straps. The same twist tie material will make them easy to attach and detach from the harness.

This is a superb scope and ideal for my HW99S. I originally had a Hawke Vantage 3-9X50 AO on it but it felt a bit big on my rifle. The 2-7X32 has had no affect on my accuracy on my 25m range and for some weird reason the 7 power magnification seems to have calmed down the wobbles as subconsciously they must have affected my trigger finger.

I have Hawke Vantage scopes on all of my air rifles and I think that they are great value for money. The optics are more than most would need for sensible air rifle distances ranges. I also found the illuminated reticle really helpful as it makes the cross hairs and mil dots really stand out on darker backgrounds, quarry or targets.

This scope has green or red illustrations and I prefer the green on its lowest setting. I would definitely recommend Hawke Vantage scopes and I would have bought an Airmax if it werent for the illuminated reticle options.

As a point of interest I also have a Hawke Fastmount 4-16X50 IR AO. I had it on my HW97K but it was just a bit too long and interfered with the loading port. Anyway, the cross hairs on it are thinner and in my opinion a bit better than on the Vantage (even though the Fastmount is cheaper) as it allowed for greater pellet position ad bigger scope magnifications.

Buy a Hawke Vantage or Fastmount if you have budget constraints. They are well made scopes and great value for money.

If you don’t have big bucks to splurge and need a very decent Binoculars, this is the one. Great optics, solid build quality. I had a 10X42 from another vendor. I was quite happy with those. Got these and took them bird watching, compared them side by side and decided this to be my go to binoculars.

The loss in magnification wasn’t much. But allowed for crisp viewing experience with less shake. Lower weight allowed it to be used for hours without fatigue. And the bright aperture allowed viewing till light was completely fading out post sunset.

Holds up well against light rain and anti-fogging does show it’s merit. Cannot get better than this.

Nice and compact and lightweight. Good clear image however it does degrade a bit when on maximum zoom. It goes a bit dimmer and needs a slight re-focus. Still good enough to use to identify something though.

Obviously also a bit wobbly on maximum zoom. Easy to change the zoom level while looking through them. I am using the 12x-16x the most which is much better than most binoculars you can buy. Would recommend.

I BOUGHT A 20 X PAIR OF BINOCULARS BUT I SENT THEM BACK AS THEY WERE FAR TOO BIG AND HEAVY. THE NIKON PAIR ARE AN EXCELLENT COMPROMISE AS THEY ARE POWERFUL AND COMPACT. AS A RESULT THEY CAN BE CARRIED EASILY AND WILL BE USED REGULARLY.

THE LARGE PAIR I SENT BACK WERE BETTER QUALITY BUT I WOULD RARELY OF USED THEM.

This is my first pair of binoculars. I selected them based on researching and comparing models online within my pricerange (under $. ) I also have tested out a few other models owned by others. I don’t have great vision but I love nature and wildlife so I wanted binoculars so I could see things that are farther away better than I could otherwise.

I suppose this is what binoculars are for but I’ve tried a few friends binoculars out before and it was almost not even worth using them, the image I saw through them would be darker with a small field of vision and it was a headache to track things with because they seemed more likely to be shakey (including a pair of $ + 8×42’s.

) However, this pair of 10×50 binoculars was everything I hoped it would be. They do everything I want. The image quality is extremely good, bright- even in low lighting conditions, and the field of view is generous.

I also find it much easier to track birds in flight and whatnot. All of this i’m sure is due largely to the 50mm lens, allowing for the great field of vision and light to come in making the image bigger, better, and easier to move around steadily.

I haven’t used high end binoculars to compare these to, but I feel no need to, these do exactly what a want. for a tradeoff. The porro design and the 50mm lens defninitely make for a large pair of binoculars.

This doesn’t bother me, I don’t plan on backpacking with them or anything, just taking with me on day trips and whatnot, if I ever found myself wanting for a ‘better’ pair, size would be the only real issue, as image quality is wonderful with these.

I also liked that they were fully multicoated and water/ fogproof for the pricerange. I haven’t tested the waterproof capabilities, and their durability over time remains to be seen (they feel really solid though,) but thus far I am extremely pleased.

The rubberized texture also makes these easy and pleasurable to hold. I guess another thing not so great is the quality of the carry case and strap. I’m glad it came with those things but I can see upgrading these in the future perhaps, but for the how much these cost ($) I’m not bothered by that, I’d rather have a great pair of binoculars with a cheap case than a cheap pair of binoculars with a good case.

All in all excellent and exactly what I wanted for the price I wanted to pay, I already have two friends who like them so much they’re going to get some too).

I bought this for field view. It has a very good grip. Lense quality is very good. However my wife complained that she could not focus properly(bispectacled) or may be she is using it for the first time.

I was looking for BAK-4 lenses but they are bit costly comparing to this. This one has BK-7 lenses. This is not a water proof,fog proof model but works very well. I feel under $40 this is worth buying.

Apart from the binocular I would like to mention about the free shipping. It was really fast and I got it in 3 days. Packing was good and a nice pouch included in that. Thanks to BinocularsPlus. com for the pleasant,secure shopping experience.

I’ve been carrying a Nikon aculon 10×50 hunting the past few years and each time I try to find moving game it’s impossible. They’re great for just sitting and scouring over a large area but do not work for finding a deer or elk on the move so I got fed up and bought these barsksas.

The size was recommended for spotting moving animals and the price was great and the reviews were good so I got them and they’re just so nice and clear and heavy as in well built. I really like them.

If I didn’t already have the Nikons I probably would have convinced myself to buy some high dollar unit but I definitely like these and the price was excellent and I’ll for sure consider Barska from now on for optics.

Either the binoculars were improperly constructed or they were dropped at some point. The left and right images would not converge. I plan to donate these to Goodwill.

I’ve had these for about a month and taken them to the woods probably a half-dozen times. They are easy to use and focus, and the image is bright, clear, and sharp. The focusing dial has just the right amount of resistance and absolutely no free movement / wiggle.

The open bridge seems a little odd at first but actually makes them much easier to grip. Solid rubber lens caps cover the lenses tightly and then swing totally out of the way and don’t obstruct the view.

I was sick of cheap flimsy binoculars and was willing to pay a little extra for a good, large set that produce a great image and would be sturdy enough to last many years, and I feel like this was the perfect choice.

I will say they are just a little heavy around the neck on a longer hike, simply because they’re big, but they’re significantly lighter than other similarly-sized sets I’ve used in the past. They’re also quite easy to carry in the hand.

Very satisfied with my Carson 10×50 binoculars, and the ‘free gift’ of a carrying case. The image is very bright and clear. Focusing is very smooth and progressive. An excellent binocular which can hold its own against some more expensive models.

Wow. Very handy bino! I have come to favor Porro binoculars. And to me the king of all binos is the 7×50 Independent Focus, Marine/astronomy models. (Fujinon, Nikon, etc. ) Clearest, most distortion free, easiest on the eyes.

And, to me a solid chunky feel. Of course, I use the tripod for astronomic viewing. (hunting and hiking, that’s largely behind me. ) However, when I looked at the 8×56’s, with the good fully multi coatings, and phase coatings, the smaller size, and the balanced look- I noticed.

By that I mean the Bushnell Trophy Xtreme roof prism. With the big 56mm objective, yet not a huge bino. Also, the Price! We all know that Bushnell is a quality brand. At less than two bills, I decided to try one.

Glad I did. It does everything right. Even the center focus is nice and firm-it actually works right! I forget that it’s not Independent focus. Competes well with the big porros. This product may be discontinued, which might be behind the low price.

Other sellers charge more, and some are out of stock. So, my friends, Get them while you can! They seem sized well even for hunting and hiking. No regrets!.

Not too big, not too small, light enough to carry around your neck all day. The optics are quite clear with very little fringe distortion. It is solidly built and has a good ergonomic design. In daylight these are as good as my best binoculars.

They are ok in subdued light but weak once the sun sets. The objective lens flip covers are great and I like the case too. In fact I cant think of anything con about these little glasses. They are awesome.

Having read glowing reviews about the Bushnell Trophy 10×42 Bone Collector binoculars, the only complaint I read was how big and heavy they are. I bought them anyway. – and they are perfectly compact and not heavy – of course these things are subjective.

Jacobs Digital were great too. Super quick delivery.

I purchased two of these binoculars for my grand-kids Christmas because they like to “hunt” in the woods with their daddy. He has a nice pair and they wanted their own pair to copy daddy’s equipment.

And if they lost them somewhere, it was no big financial loss. Actually I was surprised by the quality of these inexpensive binoculars. The field of view adjustment is more than adequate for little eyes (big ones too) and surprisingly the brightness through the lens is pretty fantastic.

So is the focus and clarity detail. I would use them in a heartbeat. They are small enough to make great opera lens but with a much better visual magnification and field of view. i would definitely recommend these binoculars to parents who want a pair for their young ones.

Please don’t consider these as “play toys” either because they are definitely worth the purchase. Vivitar is known to build good cameras and lens by the way.

I didn’t check other reviews before buying. I assumed that these were roof prism binoculars but they’re not. The box claims in the specifications that they are porro prism, which is also false. These binoculars have NO prisms; they are non-inverting opera-glasses.

They only magnify about 2X and show a lot of spherical distortion. The lenses are un-coated plastic and both sides don’t align properly, giving a double-image of what they do show. I only wanted them for a low-precision informal use, but these are so cheap that they aren’t even useful for that.

Returning them isn’t worth the hassle considering the price paid. These are not worth stealing, and Wal-Mart shouldn’t be selling them with false specifications present on the box.

I work in a factory that has high warehouse shelves and items stored on these shelves have hand-written labels. We were having problems reading the labels, and we were spending a lot of time retrieving the items, only to find they were not the items we were looking for.

I saw these on WalMart’s site, and thought for the price of just $6. 00 it would be worth a try. I bought 3 of them for myself and two co-workers. Wonderful! We can now tell for sure which items are where, and only unshelve the right items.

The make the labels readable just like if they were right in front of us, not 25 feet in the air.

I bought these binocs for ultralite backpacking and sea kayak camping on the Cascade Marine Trail system in the Salish Sea. What I desire from my binocs are: 1) Water proof/resistant for use in heavy rain or around my neck when I am paddling my kayak 2) Compact volume 3) Lightweight 4) Good optics, especially in lower/flat light conditions when I am looking for a place to land my sea kayak in overcast seas or as the day darkens into night 5) Robustness These ATB 8×25 binocs met all of my needs.

The Nikon optics, as expected were the best in gathering light and sharpening contrast, and maintaining good focus across the entire field of view. They were the best of the four or five binocs I compared.

They are also lightweight and compact. On a recent multiday backpack trip along the Washington Coast, which I wanted to do as lightweight as possible, I consider these binocs to be the only non-essential thing that I packed.

I wanted to get my starting-out pack weight down to 25 lbs, so I debated whether to take them or not. But because they are so light and compact, I brought them along, and was glad that I did, as it allowed me to assess several route options, camping choices and the ability to look at bald eagles and other life up close without disturbing them.

My only criticism, and it is the reason why I rated the item 4 stars instead of 5, are the rubber caps for the eye pieces. They are loose caps, and constantly fall off the ends of the eyepieces. I don’t like NOT having my eyepieces covered when the binocs are not being used, but there is no way that the caps would stay on if the binocs were around my neck.

They should be like many other binocular eye caps: hooked together and attached physically to the binocs when not in use (or at least have that option). I have almost lost the end caps numerous times, and they have fallen into the sand, which I then have to carefully clean out of them before replacing them over the eyepieces.

It is a small thing, but it is really, really annoying!.

I wanted a small binocular with good optics and a case. The Nikon 8X25 Trailblazer is great and let’s me see things clearly. I have macular degeneration and my vision is blurry at a distance. With these binoculars, I can see the faces of dancers or actors in the stage as well as clearly see wildlife and birds.

The caveat is that the covers to the eye pieces are not attached and did not fit snuggly. They fell off easily when I was putting the binocs back in the case or taking them out. I cut a thin strip of black electrical tape and put it along the rims of the covers.

I wish the covers were attached but they do not come off easily. I now have to apply a little pressure to remove the covers which is a good thing.

My mom and I always take our binoculars backpacking. I have this pair, she has something else. These ones can do something cool that hers can’t: I can magnify things that are very nearby, like little critters in the water near the bank of a shallow lake, or a bird on a nearby tree.

With hers, she can’t get close-by things into focus. These binoculars have done well for a number of years now, and I use them at home too, and the ballet, and can easily bring them anywhere else I think I’ll need them.

The housing is not degrading at all like in that one review, it feels and looks very new still despite me setting them down on rough rocks all the time and stuff. I think that pair must have been exposed to high heat or something.

These stunning binoculars have a level of optical clarity and construction that belies their price. They are beautifully made with an accurate and smooth focus mechanism, a very ergonomic and armoured body and eyecups that actually stay in position.

The field of view is perfect for bird watching and the amazing depth of field minimises the need to constantly re-focus, the view takes on an almost 3D effect. Eye relief is excellent. Compare these to any Alpha binocular from the most prestigious manufacturers and you will be amazed at just how good they are.

The title says it all. These binoculars are superb quality and great value. I previous owned an optical device made by the same manufacturer which I was pleased with. These binoculars live up to the same quality and expectations.

The viewed image is sharp and clear. The magnification and object lens are a good size and ideal for my primary use of bird spotting. The binoculars are not too heavy so are easy to hold steady for long periods.

They are also light enough to keep hanging around my neck, especially with the wide and padded neck/shoulder strap. The construction of the binoculars is a good, tough plastic that is nicely textured to give a good grip and prove good protection from the odd slight knock.

They also have built in lens caps that cannot be readily lost and are easy to remove and replace after use. The binoculars come with a tough and hard wearing bag that has a carry strap and belt loops.

Over all Im very impressed with the binoculars and am happy to recommend them to anyone that need a good quality pair at a reasonable price.

I bought these in December 2020 at the Burnley store (which has been my camera shop of choice for over 30 years – I’m sure I exhaust them at times but they never seem to weary of my incessant questions and determination to research everything to a point that’s often redundant given my strictly amateur enthusiast status) after having been using a friends far more expensive pair of Leica binoculars, and have been thrilled with them so far.

I’m hugely impressed with the image clarity and can’t objectively perceive any significant difference between these and bins that on paper would cost at least 4 times as much. The accessories all add to the feeling of a quality and well thought out product – the semi hard case, strap, built in lens caps etc are all perfect and more than I expected for the price.

Really pleased! (bought two pairs ‘hubby and wife’). I had done quite a bit of research and in the end did NOT spend to my upper price limit. Hawke binoculars even have a no fault (no blame) lifetime warranty for extra peace of mind if you register them with Hawke.

We had a small manufacturing problem with one pair which Wilkinson’s sorted very fast with over night shipping of a replacement. Great service, great communication and great binoculars.

I have a narrow face and have had a hard time finding binocs I can use. After some research, I narrowed down my choice to these–and they are perfect. I’m a beginning birder, and the optics seem great–although I don’t have much to compare them against.

The price was very reasonable. I’m superhappy to have binocs I can see through with both eyes! (For reference, my IPD for my glasses is 53, although I understand there’s not a direct correlation between IPD for eyeglasses and that needed for binocs.

).

I use these 10×50 Discovery WP PC binoculars mostly for bird watching and general nature viewing. While mostly I find 8×42 or 8×32 binoculars more useful I do have a place for a higher-magnification binocular and these seem to suit that purpose nicely, without being so costly as to break the bank.

These Discoverys are quite compact for a 10×50 binocular and have an unusually wide field of view for the format. They feel good in the hand and offer a decently sharp view over most of the field and good (though not great) contrast and colour saturation.

The focus wheel is precise, though lightly-weighted and, I think, perhaps requiring too little movement for large changes in focus point. They seem quite resistant to flare, but do suffer a little from loss of contrast due to veiling flare when viewing near the rising or setting sun or under bright overcast conditions.

Their one major optical sin is suffering perhaps too much from chromatic aberration (purple and/or green colour fringing, especially on high-contrast edges) which is present right from the centre of view and becomes progressively worse off-axis.

Nonetheless, while CA is present it is well-enough controlled that I can live with it (note, though, that I’m not overly bothered by CA and can usually ignore it: those who can’t should probably avoid these Discoverys).

The strap and case supplied are pretty basic, though quite functional. The rubber-band-and-cap objective covers fit well. Both one-piece and two-connected-caps rainguards were provided. I found the one-piece guard fit well, so that’s the one I use.

The two-caps guard also fit but too snugly for my preference. Overall I find these 10×50 Discovery binoculars pleasing to use, though I’d possibly prefer to spend a bit more for something with better control of CA if they were my primary binoculars, rather than a higher-magnification supplement.

If I could, I’d probably rate them 3. 5 stars, rather than 4 (based on view and value for money) – but I think 3 would be too low a rating.

7×42 is becoming a rare thing in binoculars, especially at the budget end. These are compact enough to fit into a large pocket, without feeling too cramped in the hand like some 32mm type compacts bins can do.

The build quality is high, with no significant flaws in the glass or housing. The view is wide, bright and neutral, although the area of sharp focus relatively small, with blurring at the edges. CA control is good at the centre, although can be found if looking for it (branches against overcast skies).

Recommended for travelling and bird watching.
