20 Best Cheap Chicken Coop (2022 Updated)

We recently bought a new home and needed to find a new coop for our chickens fast. After some shopping around, I bought the small OverEZ coop based on its sturdy-looking design and ease of assembly. Unfortunately it wasn’t worth the price tag, as there seem to be several quality control issues with it.

First, many of the pre-driven screws were bent and wouldn’t drive correctly, requiring me to replace them with my own. Also the “catch” for the nest box lock is so loose it won’t stay connected to the handle, making the locking mechanism completely useless.

I ended up screwing down the door so that predators can’t easily enter through there before I can find some other locking solution. In addition, the lock on the “man door” isn’t positioned correctly, so the door isn’t held flush when the door is locked–there is about 1/2″ of play.

It’s not enough to let a raccoon in, but still not ideal at all. The window also leaks (bad dealing), and the screen (which should be hardware cloth to be honest) came out within a week of putting the coop together.

There are other design flaws as well. I personally find the coop too small even for my three chickens, though I suppose if the chickens only sleep in it it is big enough. Otherwise, though, it’s too cramped to provide food and water while keeping them inside.

The “man door” is also very narrow, and cleaning out the coop is a real chore as a result. A full size door would be much more convenient for changing bedding. The roosting bars are only 2×2″, which is too narrow for chickens to comfortably stand with feet flat as they prefer.

It would be better to have 2×4″ perches with the 4″ side up instead. I went ahead and just screwed the provided 2x2s together to make one perch for my three birds. In the end, I feel that even with higher prices on lumber right now, it’s possible to build a much better coop for the same money or cheaper.

Unless you need a new coop fast and are willing to have to do a lot of fixing to make it work, I would steer clear of this one.

Once it is put together, it is a very good shelter for our flock. However, it was not as easy and simple to put together. Some of the pre-drilled screws/nails were not at the right spot, some of the wooden panels did not match up properly with the dotted lines and instructions.

So, because of this, it took us a much longer time than expected to put the coop together. about 3. 5 hours. My husband and I were quite frustrated and disappointed with things not fitting as it should and having to piece the parts together through trial and error.

There were also 2 screws missing. The nesting boxes also have a large gap because the wood did not line up as detailed in the instructions. We had high hopes for this coop, being that it is amish-built and thought that it would take the headache of building our own from scratch away.

There should have been more precision in the measuring and building of the pieces. Like I said, once it is all put together and standing, it provides a water-proof, safe and comfortable shelter for our flock but putting it together was just a big pain in the neck.

I bought this coop in September of 2021 in the brown and black colored version they sold temporarily. It definitely does not hold 15 chickens. Maybe 6-8 maximum. My 4 gals fit fine but this coop won’t hold 15 unless they are packed in there with no room to move.

The pieces were sturdy and it was fairly easy to assemble, though very heavy. We needed 3 strong people to lift each side. The front piece with the windows was not cut to the correct size and so we had to cut a piece of wood to cover a large gap in one side of the coop.

The roof arrived damaged; bent and scratched. The coop also must’ve been packed while the paint was still wet because removing the packaging caused lots of the paint to peel off, so I was glad it was shipped with extra cans of paint but slightly annoyed I had to repaint so much of a brand new coop.

It’s not easy to clean since there’s no removable pan and it’s too short to get inside to sweep it out, and I’m a pretty small person. If I had to do it over, I’d buy a shed from a box store like tractor supply and just add nesting boxes yourself.

cheaply made. Only 3 weeks old and the piece of wood that attaches the roof is cracked. The roof is now just sitting on top of the coop. It’s 5° and snowing. I went to check on the chickens and the coop is full of snow.

The snow comes in where the nesting box connects to the coop and the venting holes on each side. So I now have wet cold chickens. I’ll be taking it apart and returning it.

Completely satisfied with this product. It was easy to assemble. I had another person to help but I think someone could put it together by themselves. Being able to open the top of the main compartment is very convenient.

I’d recommend this product.

The box looked like it had previously been opening and taped back up. Missing all the hardware and two sides to the coop. We were very disappointed in this purchase and returned it. We will not use tractor supply again.

This is an amazing product. I’m using it for 2 rabbits. It’s super easy to access all the parts for cleaning, there’s plenty of space for the rabbits and multiple hay/litter boxes, some toys and tunnels etc.

The rabbits are really happy in there, it’s very good to access the rabbits too as they tend to come to the top box for feeding, then you can slide the door shut and trap them in there so you can grab them and handle them etc.

It looks very sturdy and well made, it doesn’t look out of place in my garden. The wire is a little weak and I’m not sure how fox proof it would be for chickens, luckily I’m in a rather foxless area and the coop is right outside my back door against the wall and under a patio roof so relatively safe.

By far the best coop/hutch I’ve owned or seen, extremely practical and great size and design for the animals. It also lets a lot of light in and the top is sturdy and good for storing things on top of (I have a rabbit carrying case and some hay bags etc up there in a storage box) Definitely recommend for rabbits/guinea pigs.

Great Coop & Run. We keep 3 silkies in this. They roam free by day in our garden, but if they don’t through winter, I wont feel so bad. Enough space for them in here. Good build quality. Easy to pop together.

Takes an hour or two with a drill. Caging decent quality, wood decent quality, screws good quality. Be aware holes for the screws in the roof are already there. Took me a while to realise they were pre-drilled.

Just hard to see. Also roof over the run area doesn’t open up. But no biggie. Good value for money! To save the wood for longer and ensure your chickens don’t become chicken dinner, consider bedding a timber rectangle into the soil and screwing your coop and run onto it.

I was slightly hesitant when I read some reviews, but when it came I was surprised at how easily and quickly I assembled it on my own (I am 76). I bought it to keep quail in and it is ideal for this purpose.

Negative point water can get into the nest boxes but a plastic runner soon solved this. For quail you cannot have the whole roof lifting as one, for if they are in the coop they can fly out and if they are in the run they can also do so.

I did not join the roof as one but left it in the two sections, one over the coop the other over the run, problem solved. I have 16 day old quail in the coop, with a 12 inch 40 watt tubular heater in, temp is at 25 to 30 degree centigrade.

On sunny spells I let them out into the run (which is on grass) and they come back in when I want them to, also the water and food is in the coop, another reason for them do do so. This coop and run is Ideal for my purpose, anyone wanting a superior product can do so but at a much higher price.

Do not purchase this item, it is listed as a chicken coop but is not suited for any animal. In the one month that I have had this item it has started to deteriorate. The wood is absorbing moisture, even after taking 4 hours to put it together correctly and with care it is shifting and separating from the wood breaking down, the roof material is flaking off and swelling up from the wood below.

I would love to return but fear that taking it apart would end with it in bits. Even if this home did stay together and wasn’t made of thin, cheap materials, the size and shape is not conducive to chickens once put together.

There is little ventilation, only a small gap where the roof comes together. The nesting area is too low, the roosting sticks are too low, the run is taken up by the fold down door and leaves little room for even a single chicken to live.

It is just a disaster and I am out 200 dollars and will have to build my own chicken house. Buyer beware!!! Do not purchase!!.

Cute little house. Roomy for our 3. Could easily add a 4th chicken. 5 would be the limit. We use it as their sleeping/ nesting quarters. We left off the run portion because we have it inside a large wire enclosure.

Good quality and sturdy. A great deal for the price. Recommend a mechanically inclined person assemble to avoid frustration. My machinest husband assembled and he had to drill a few holes and straighten up a few “off-set” areas in the roof.

Some of the directions are vague. But, once it was together the chickens checked it out immediately. I looked at dozens of houses we could afford and this was a great fit. Would buy again. :).

I like how its made but the unit itself could be better. The stain or paint job is poor and the wood used is soft. Could have extra latches on each latch door. The top is the worse to build and screws aren’t long enough to hold it on tight.

You can build it and customize it according to what you need. Otherwise you get what you pay for a cheap unit for little over $200 price. I don’t love it, but I do like it. I personally think it’s about $50 too high for what you get.

It is flimsy! We got this to our pet chicken and I will have to reinforce the whole thing. We use it as an extension of her chicken run and we let her free range when we are outside with her, otherwise it would be too small for even one chicken alone.

3 stars because it is a good place for her to sleep after we adder a roaster!.

I read all the reviews and knew this was a gamble. I just needed a place for my 18 teenager chicks to be. This was fine for that. But it is not sturdy, and even for your one or two full size chickens, this wouldn’t withstand much.

Pieces aren’t flush, and quality isn’t good.

We ordered this to move the wife’s chickens to a new area. We looked at several coops and it came down to this or the OverEZ. We choose the Snap Lock for price and ease. First, shipping was super fast! It was delivered to us within 3 days of ordering.

Second, assembly was a ‘snap’, literally. We assembled the coop within 30 minutes. The instructions are written very well. We even had to partially disassemble the coop to move it. We had initially thought of putting outside the new run, but then the wife decided inside would be better.

The reassembly was just as easy. We are only giving 4 stars due to the flimsy base. Many other reviews mentioned it and we were aware, but it is very thin. Snap Lock should figure a way to make the base as sturdy as the rest of the kit.

We also used the included screws to secure the roost posts. They were too easy to knock out of the wall slots, so we figured the chickens would do it as well. Overall, we are very impressed with the coop.

Let’s see how the chickens like it.

We did a lot of research on coops before we got our flock, including talking to friends that also kept chickens. One thing everyone agreed on was the pre-build wooden coops are trash and need modified right out of the box, and degrade in less than 3 years.

We new we didn’t want a ‘disposable’ coop (which is what most pre-builts amount to), and we didn’t have the time or resources during a pandemic to build out own that would suit our cold winters in Northwest ohio.

With that in mind, we liked the idea of this coop despite it’s very high price point. It was easy to put together, which was nice. It also included plans to built a stand. YOU MUST PUT IT ON A STAND.

The base is too flimsy to support the wieght of the empty coop let alone with birds and litter. this is problem #1 Problem #2: Be prepared to file down edges and seems. Even with a rubber mallet we had to file down plastic seems to get the interlocking joints to fit.

I already had files on hand from my job, but be prepared if you don’t. Problem #3: Roosting bars are loose and fall out. You’ll need to modify them out of the box. When I confronted the manufacturer about it they just told me to drill holes and use screws to fix them in place.

It’s a design flaw they don’t seem inclined to do anything about. Problem #4: It leaks. We get water that collects under the liter pans. The manufacturer told us the coop needed to be completely level to keep leaking to a minimum and even then there may be water under the liter pans.

It’s a health hazard for the birds. We were told to just drill extra holes in the plastic bottom. However, this is sure to compromise the integrity of the base. Problem #5: Gaps. There are small gaps in the snap-together panels.

Considering you should have a draft-free coop, this will be a problem in winter. We are most likely going to have to wrap the coop in insulating material to cut down the drafts through the gaps. Problem #6.

The next box pans slide out about 2 inches all the time. I’m going to add non-skid material under them to prevent this, but it’s another design flaw. Problem #7: Roost bar placement. If you use the lowest roost bar, the birds poop in the nest boxes all night.

Their butts hang right into the nest box, so be prepared to clean them more frequently. The solution to this is to not use the roost bar placement closest to the nest boxes. Problem #8: It’s NOT Raccoon proof.

It’s a plastic coop, so if a tenacious raccoon wants to chew through the vents, they could do so in a few hours (this is my assumption, we haven’t had it happen). Problem #9: Defective Parts. We had a nest box lid that collected water in the plastic void out of the box.

The manufacturer DID send a free replacement set of lids, but now we are checking the coop weekly to make sure something else isn’t defective. THINGS WE DO LIKE: 1. This coop is super easy to clean. Everything slides out and we just dump the litter right into the compost bin.

If it’s extra dirty, we spray it down with the hose. 2. It’s light. So if one person needed to move it they could (but 2 is easier due to size). 3. It won’t rot, so there is little maintenance needed.

4. Eggs are super easy to collect. The nest boxes are easy to get into, and if you use the stand design you don’t even have to bend over. 5. It looks nice for a pre-fabricated coop. Our neighbor even likes the look.

CONCLUSION: Would I recommend this coop at it’s current price-point? No, probably not. It’s very expensive for what you get, and the whole point of it is to have a coop built for you and basically ready to go without needing to be handy.

For this price we expected to get this coop, pop it together, and go. Instead we have spent countless hours modifying it to make it work or make it better for our birds with numerous calls to the manufacturer (including getting replacement parts).

Honestly, if you like the idea of this coop and are handy with tools (or know someone that is) you would be better off buying a used kids’ plastic playhouse and modifying it to your flock’s needs. It’ll be cheaper, and will pretty much be the same thing in the end.

I was expanding my flock and didn’t have time to build something. This coop was the perfect answer. The designers thought of everything: trays on the floor that pull out for easy cleaning, nest boxes with “privacy screens,” carbiner locks on every door (and each carbiner attaches to its door so you don’t lose it!).

Every part of the coop can be opened for easy access, then locked up to keep out predators. I’m not usually a fan of plastic, but it sure is easier to keep clean than wood. It was simple to put together, but required a bit of muscle to make some of the pieces snap into place.

My son and I built it in about 20 minutes. Note that this coop doesn’t have room for feed and water. You’ll need to give the girls a covered area outside for that.

Just like camping tent makers, chicken coop makers can not be trusted on number of occupants. This coop will fit 3 large chickens at most. Reasons I chose this one: I wanted a walk-in. There are very few coops out there with this feature.

I like the aesthetic. Fits my style. And here are the things you might want to know about this coop: It is unfinished, which they tout as a perk. What it really means is that there is about 15 hours of painting in your future.

And because of the way the hardware cloth panels are installed, it is impossible to actually paint all exposed surfaces. It is also impossible to not get paint or stain on the hardware cloth. As far as assembling, you will need two people to put together.

I technically did it by myself (with the aid of a patio chair), and it would be much easier with a helper. It took over 2 hours with a power drill. The instructions are basic, but it really isn’t that complicated to put together.

One major note: if the outside 4 walls are not at the correct angles (90 degrees), the roof panels appear not to fit. Make sure everything is sitting on the ground straight. Predator proofing: Needs work.

I added hardware cloth to the underside of the roof panels as there is a very large gap all the way around. Easily big enough for snakes, mice, rats, smaller birds, etc. I also recommend updating the latches if you live in an area with raccoons, as they will quickly figure out the slide bolts.

This coop definitely needs hardware cloth across the bottom of the run or an apron. The nesting box floor is a thin piece of wood just sitting on brackets. Anything of size (cat, raccoon, dog, possum) could easily push this up from under the coop and get inside.

I intend to screw this down or make it unmovable. Roots: the 2 internal roosts where about 1/2″ too long to fit into the brackets. They are also basically on the floor of the coop. There is room for a higher diagonal roost, if you are at all handy with building.

Ramp: the ramp is very steep. I do not know if all chickens would feel comfortable using it. Additionally, it ends almost right against the wall of the run. Feeder/waterer: no good options for hanging feeders/waterers.

All of the framing pieces are 1. 5″x2″ pieces that would not support that much weight. Probably not enough room in the coop for a feeder with 3 birds anyway. I installed a 2×3 frame under the drawer to suspend a waterer from.

Drawer: not sure how they envisioned this feature working, but it is very flimsy. The metal sheeting bends easily because there are no supports under it. I added a frame of 2x3s underneath to help support, as I plan on doing sand and/or deep litter.

I don’t want it to break under the weight of the litter and any chickens. Overall, I think this could be a good coop if you put some work in. If you just set it up straight out of the box, I believe there would be water damage and predator loss within a very short time.

I did find an old review from 2021 that lists this coop at 2/3 price of what I paid. So in less than a year it has gone up significantly. I am not allowed to say the price, but will say that it was a lot more than other coops I looked at during my research.

I feel that is outrageous for all the work I had to make this thing functional. And of course, no returns.

I spent months researching when it was time to replace our coop. This one was super-cute, appeared to be sturdier construction than others we found (boy, was I wrong!), and had great reviews. We purchased in January, as we had extra money available then, but did not assemble, paint, and move the chickens in until June.

I spent days building, painting, sealing, and adjusting to make it just right, and I wanted to love it, but I simply don’t. The first major issue came at the time of assembly. Let me start by saying my husband and I are both pretty handy.

We can fix things and make adjustments to just make things work. We discovered that the “precut” holes to attach the roof to the frame panels were not cut in the correct location, and one was missing entirely (there was a peg, but not hole for the peg to go in to).

If we used the holes as they were drilled, the roof panels would have been offset from each other by over 2 inches or more and the peak cover piece would not have fit to close off the top. No 2 of the 3 panels lined up evenly.

We were able to re-drill the incorrect holes and fill the in the old ones in order to get the peak panels in place in a way that lined up so we could attach the peak, however the layer box roof still does not align properly to the peak, as we didn’t want to modify more than was absolutely necessary.

That one fit on its pegs, but is still off by about an inch. Issue number two- the walk-in door. When the frame was assembled, the door was a bit tight but functional, but under the weight of the roof, the frame bowed and compressed and the door absolutely would not open or close.

My husband had to grind up to 1/8 inch from parts of the side and bottom in order for the door to function, as the roof caused bowing in the panels. Even now it is very tight, but we have it functioning and didnt want to grind more than we had to.

Problem 3: door latches! The door slide latches did not line up with their receivers. We had to move one of the two on the walk-in door, one of the two on the back drop-down door, and the latch on the small coop door in order to be able to lock them.

Fourth issue- the layer box area. The box dividers are very flimsy and not cut to align with their “slots” properly. When sitting on the layer box floor, the dividers fell over because they are not squared at the back, thus they don’t reach the grooves meant to hold them up.

We had to add extra shims to make a deeper groove so they did not fall over on the girls. Next up: the layer box floor. It is VERY thin, cut too small to fit properly, and held in place by two small wooden L-shaped brackets with ONE tiny nail in each.

Consequently, those brackets pivoted on the nails which caused the bottom to DROP OUT of the layer box about 2 weeks after we bagan using it! Fortunately none of our chickens were hurt, though we had a few broken eggs.

We added extra nails to the brackets so they could no longer pivot, but the floor is still not as sturdy or well-fitted as I would like. This morning when i went to open them, the bottom had dropped out again so we will need to create a more stable way for it to sit in its spot and we will likely replace with actual plywood if we don’t simply scrap the coop and start again at this point.

With all that said, there are things I don’t hate. The coop stays dry for the chickens through rain storms, the little window is great for nighttime air circulation, the slide door and ramp for the to go in and out are fine, the tray works well and is deeper than most I’ve had in the past, and it is still super cute.

But it is small, way too small for the number of birds it is rated for, as my 8 chickens are way too cramped. We have an additional run that is connected for them to have extra space because the run is SO small.

I just hate that I spent money on a new coop that I have had nothing but problems with. Six months in I am still fixing manufacturers issues that should never have been mine to fix. However because I purchased it in January and didn’t assemble until June, I’m kind of stuck.

My recommendation is do not buy.

This coop was very easy to put together, and worth the extra $ for a sturdier structure than less expensive coops. Take the advice of all the other reviews and paint / stain / seal BEFORE assembling.

Those are the positives. Negatives are that the enclosure is VERY small. (Again, it does offer more than less expensive coops, but still) I have 2 Silkies, and they manage to bump into one another in the enclosure.

I don’t know how they think this coop is large enough for any more than 2-3 birds. Also – despite being heavier than less expensive coops – it’s very light. ANCHOR it somehow, or the first gust of wind will send it flying.

I dug an 18″ deep trench and buried hardware cloth, then stapled it to the structure, so it does double duty to deter digging predators and to anchor the coop to the ground. I had to modify the roosts to make them a bit higher – they are barely an inch above the nest boxes – Silkies are notoriously broody, so I raised the roosts another inch or 2 to discourage sleeping in the nest boxes.

I also had to modify the ramp to make the angle a bit less steep – the ladies slid down it like a ski slope! So I cut off a couple inches and attached it to the bottom of the coop, which helped. Overall an decent coop, but you should be ready to make some adjustments.

This is a really cute little coop. It went together very easily. It only took me about 20 minutes to snap it together. I think this would fit 5 regular size hens or 6 Bantams or Silkies. It seems to be pretty durable.

We are going to put ours on a stand with some cement support. It can sit on the ground but I think it will be more servicable elivated. The only complaint I have is that the cover for the nesting boxes does not line up very well and I can only close one of the locks.

I think I will be removing the two existing closures and installing a bigger one that lines up better. Overall I am very happy with this coop and am glad I purchased it.

It’s quite expensive for the space you get but I think it’s worth it. Easy to put together and disassemble and not too heavy to move by yourself (as a single woman. ) the stand is kind of a pain in the butt or build, I sincerely wish that they sold a stand with it rather than just plans because I would pay a lot for the convenience of having a premanufactured one.

However once the stand is a part of the coop it’s life changing. The coop has decent ventilation, though you can’t ever have enough, and the coop is easy to clean. I would at most put 4 large breed birds in there but that’s just me.

Maybe even 3, truthfully. the girls love the nesting boxes as well.

I just bought the smaller coop. I bought it because it can be easily accessed and cleaned and it went together like a breeze. 3 complaints: 1-the holes for the carabiners are really small and some of us chicken keepers are women with nails and it is really hard to get them in there and mine didn’t come with those loops to attach them so when I accidentally drop them finding them in the grass is quite hard, 2-the bottom tray can only be accessed by taking out the nesting boxes (divider walls and base) and then pulling the tray up and out-a pull out tray like the other coops have would be sooo much better, 3- the bottom piece is really thin-this is my main gripe, the side of it are already bending outwards.

If it was meant to sit on a base it was not made clear at the time of purchase, now I have to build a base and quite quickly, but the base skirt has already curved outward on the skirt part because it is sitting on the grass.

I do like it a lot except for these 3 reasons. On a different note, customer service from TSC was EXCELLENT! It arrived at the store fast, they helped me with questions and supplies and when I found that it went on sale a week later and emailed them they credited back the different in about 3 hours at 9p that night, amazing!!.

So I purchased this coop for my daughter who is in $-H and wanted to show a chicken. It’s very cute, but NOT sturdy at all. Put it together wherever you want it to stay, as it will literally fall apart if you try to move it, even just a few inches.

Be prepared for the wood to split when you drill the screws, so I recommended making the pre-drilled holes just a tad bigger. Also, try using wood glue to reinforce. This will make a good temporary home for 2 pullets, but I would not want to make 2 full sized chickens live in this.

The run under the actual coop becomes a nasty mess in a very short period of time and your animals would be at a much higher risk of disease if not cleaned almost daily. We plan to use it for our chicks as we introduce them to the rest of the flock in our new much larger coop purchased after we discovered how flimsy this one was.

Oh, and it doesn’t really give you good protection from predators either, as the doors can be easily pulled open even when locked. On a positive note, the pull-out drawer is nice, and the nesting boxes are plenty big, but the floor of the nesting boxes has gaps, which is again dangerous because they’re easy targets for predators.

I wanted to give 5 stars but the ladder that our chicken is supposed to climb up and get to the roost, is difficult to get to and it is way too narrow. It is located all the way to the back wall and ends at the foot of the right side wall of the coop.

The ramp leading into the coop from the outside is located directly in the middle. So, Sweetie is supposed to enter, turn far right and then go up a very narrow stairway, She’s a free range farrell Ameraucana, full grown chicken we rescued from the cold and we bought her her new home after trying to locate the owners for 4 months.

We may have to make some modifications to make it work, such as widening the interior ramp and somehow adjoining it to the ramp from outside. That part is very disappointing as she doesn’t know how to go up into the roost.

I’ve only had it a week so we’ll keep trying to train her or modify the ramp. Otherwise, it is very pretty, lots of room for her to roost and nest. The run is short. 72 inches in length. We love the real shingled slanted roof and the easy entrances for us to get in.

My husband made a 2 X 4 platform and nailed the coop to it so it wouldn’t rest directly on the dirt ground. This will probably help it last longer after rains. Also, we found it a lot difficult to put together as some of the pieces didn’t match the diagram, unlike other reviews that found it easy.

This coop came in two boxes, one with main coop, instructions, and bolts and screws, the other with nesting box and smaller pieces. My husband and I put the coop together in less than an hour. Husband said the instrustions were less then detailed but I put the structure together without it.

South Florida summer heat is awful so I’m blaming it on that! Overall the sturdiness, look, feel, and space is perfect for our 2 Reds. We could fit one more Red but I believe 3 would be max. 4 is stretching it but possible.

The roost is not ideal so that’s my only complaint, it’s a round rod close to the floor so we will be installing a 1×1 bar a little higher up for better grip and higher distance from floor. This is a perfect starter to 3 year coop and we will definitely purchase a larger one in the future!.

In short, it does the job but is not good quality. This is to be expected given the low price but this represents something of a false economy. We bought this is a stop-gap until we are able to build a more suitable coop but I would not recommend buying this for long-term use.

Some specific issues are as follows: – The wood is thin. This is fine for the most part but when attaching the hinges for the nest box there are no pilot holes and so the wood panel immediately cracked.

– The roofing material keeps crumbling away and falling into the coop when the nest box is open, this in turn may pose a health hazard for the hens if ingested. – The slide out tray is a good idea but doesn’t work well in practice.

It is very close to the ground so awkward to get out anyway, but the bigger problem is that the tray is so shallow that removing it when there is bedding in the tray is difficult and usually results in most of the bedding falling out under the coop.

On the plus side, it is cheap and easy to assemble.

On a recent weekend morning, we learned that after a nasty thunderstorm the night before, we had a chicken in our yard. It apparently blew in on the wind, because none of our nearby neighbors have chickens, and we’re in an urban environment.

Anyway, the chicken has a name now, and needed a place to live. The kit arrived intact, no broken parts. It went together pretty easily, with minimal hand tools. 2 minor complaints: 1. The wooden parts are not labeled.

2. The latches included in the kit for the door and the gate are a waste of time. Made a trip to the local hardware store for a couple of latches, problem solved. All the hardware was very clearly marked, which was a big help.

When it comes time to buy another, I’ll be back.

Although a bit lightweight it’s of functional design and easy to assemble. Roof doesn’t lift for additional red mite cleaning, but coop is light enough to turn on side for pressure washing inside if needed (tip: put cleaning tray in situ before roof assembly to make sure everything is square).

We did strengthen with screws some of the weaker bits of structure put together with staples. But it’s a hen coop not living room furniture. It’s good value for money. Customer Services good too, quickly sorting out a discount issue.

Price is right. Pretty well made. Assembled in less than an hour. Has a thin stain, but should be re-stained prior to use. Is mobile, can be lifted by two people easily. Recommended for 3 or less chickens.

My four, full size, chickens love it! They totally know it’s there space, it’s easy to clean and simply construction. It’s sturdy and the materials seem pretty weather resistant without a sealer; however, ours is in covered area since we live in a desert like climate, so I may be biased.

I would definitely suggest a sealer if you’re not planning to put this in a shady area. The fenced in area and the dowels did require additional security so they don’t fall off/detach.

Its a little smaller than expected. Definitely wont hold adult chickens, but will be good for my chicks while I build something else. Locks need some reinforcement to keep raccoons and things out. Otherwise, its very nice to look at and very convenient.

Easy to put together once you get the pieces in order!.

It was pretty easy to put together, it took me 4 12 hours and it looks good. A little smaller than I originally imagined, but my 4 little girls love it.

This coop was a decent price when I was in a bit of a pinch. I decided sort of spur-of-the-moment to get chickens. I knew I wanted a coop with a walk-in run but the prefab ones were expensive and did not have good reviews.

I was overwhelmed with what I wanted to build myself and just needed to buy myself a little time with chicks in a rubbermaid tub in our sunroom. I decided to get this coop as it would buy me a little more time in the event I couldn’t make a decision on what to build.

We also plan on putting this in the garage for the ‘teenage weeks’. It went together easy and it is very cute. I do agree with some people that it might not hold up super well, but the instructions to recommend sealing the wood if it is going to be in the elements.

I’m going to keep this as a spare coop in the event I need to tend to a sick chicken, am having pecking-order issues, or just need to move them somewhere for maintenance on the main coop. I could also see it being useful to introduce new chickens to the existing flock.

It was right for the price and speed, but I wouldn’t recommend this as a long-term option.

The specifications mention this fitting 4-5 full grown chickens. We had 4 so we thought it would be a good fit, it’s much MUCH smaller than the picture portrays. We thought it would be a little sturdier as well for the amount we paid.

it’s definitely not. Definitely a coop for MAYBE the first 6 months when they’re little, but other than that I’d invest in a bigger coup.

If you live in a climate where the weather is diverse (truely all four seasons), and it’s out in the elements, don’t plan on this lasting more than 1 year. It’s cheaply made, and won’t last. It’s painted mearly primer that comes off when wet, or rubbed roughly enough.

May have lasted longer if I would have put a coat or two of outdoor paint on it. The tray under coop is handy, however it’s SO close to the roosting sticks, half the time they just stand on the tray- leading to poopy feet, which leads to poopy eggs.

The nesting boxes are on the same level as the roosting sticks, which isn’t ideal. I take the tray out in the summer to help with ventalation b/c the two little doors just don’t cut it. I did put chicken wire in the red door so that I could also keep that open for venting in the summer.

Would not recommend putting more than 3-4 chickens in it if you don’t have an extended yard for them. My hens pecked and broke some of the glass in the cute little door, and it can’t be taken it apart with out difficulty, so it’s just stuck in there.

Most things are great, it’s so easy to put together, this comes in especially handy when wanting to take it apart for jet washing. The plastic is very strong and easy to clean and maintain, especially no wood to preserve and red mite cannot live in the plastic.

The layout is great and the inside is easy to access from all ways when needed. It looks fantastic in an urban garden. However we have been miffed with the fox wire that goes around the bottom, the wheels (if you purchased them) need to sit on top of the 2 side pieces so you cannot just up and move it all in one piece, a small re-design would easy solve this.

The roosting poles inside are wood so do not clean down as well as the rest of the plastic and will maybe need replacing well within the 25 years that the rest of the coop is guaranteed for. The steps are a bit cumbersome for the chickens to use, a ramp like on the smaller models would be better, although when they are trying to get up and down (after a very long thoughtful time of staring at them) it does have comedy value.

Quite expensive as there are no direct competitions for this brand (you cannot compare eglu as the features are no where near the same) but I imagine when more come on the market (which they will as it is an amazing bit of kit that will be copied I’m sure in some way) the price might come down, but for now this company is the top choice.

I bought this ark for my Indian runner ducks and specifically wanted this one to future proof for more ducks. It comfortably accommodates my three ducks and has a good amount of head space for them being ‘tall’ ducks.

It would probably easily fit 6+ ish runners overnight. I love the fact the roof comes off and can easily clean inside. The roof is quite heavy but manageable just. It’s sturdy and well made, there are the odd little tiny gaps around the edges in places which would let some drafts in but not a big deal.

I love that it is plastic as I wanted this for infection control and cleaning. It would be good to be insulated more as the inside temperatures tend to stay very similar to the outside ones. Perhaps next winter I will trial it off the ground.

My only disappointment with this product is the door. It is not predator proof in any way. It’s very loose, rodents could easily get in and a fox would easily pull it off. Thankfully my ducks are already in a fox proof run but I do place a heavy stone across the door overnight for extra piece of mind.

If the designers could make a moderation and a more secure door this would be a perfect product, it’s a bit of a shame. It would be great for larger or taller poultry (runner ducks, geese, turkey etc) with a secure predator proofed door.

I was about to give up my hens, a hobby I have loved for years,red mite had got into my old wooden hut, it was one I’d built myself, many places for mite to hide. After battling all summer, relying on powders , putting Vaseline on perches ect , I decided to call it a day,I’m giving up my lovely pekins!, I looked up online to see how others coped with this problem, there I see these plastic coops and how there wasn’t any hiding place for mite, could be washed out, seemed a miracle cure for problems, so ordered one.

Assembly was so easy, ample clips were provided,by the time I had assembled it, I’d forgotten about the cost, everything about was designed brilliantly, even the adjustable air vents were genius, just decide where to turn them , so easy.

I re sited when the hen house was which gave many other benefits, so all the improvements put together, I’d never had it so easy ! It’s a solid construction, ours is positioned out of wind near house wall, but have no stability issues at all Cleaning out is a pleasure, not a chaw, sounds strange but I actually enjoy the little bit of daily cleaning out, I think it’s because you know your hens are happy and more importantly, healthy and mite free Any sign of a bug and it’s roof and back off and straight in with high pressure hose , just isn’t possible for mites to hide anywhere I’d like to say thanks and a huge well done and congratulations on designing and producing this product, it really is a game changer ! As I’m slightly oversized for birds I have , now gone from giving up to getting a few more.

If you don’t have a heavy-duty battery-powered drill, don’t bother. It’s a BUNCH of screws! Also, if you are doing this properly – know you will have about $200 worth of shingles and drip edge to purchase (required) and about 10 tubes of caulk ($3 each) + 2 cans of oil-based primer ($17 each) + any paint you want.

This does not come with steps. You’ll need to build those, as well. Time – it took 1 full day to get it together, another full day for shingles and caulking, another full day for painting. I like it’s size.

Easy to stand straight in and clean up. Very good size nesting boxes. (NOTE: If you live in climates that snow, you will want to build your own roof extension over the nesting box area; otherwise, you will have snow on top of them.

)The window, door/lock, vent, and chicken exit worked properly. (I did have to redo the latches, as they were not lined up, but that was easy. )When putting together the nesting boxes, it will talk about predrilled holes in the wood.

There were no pre-drilled holes. If you don’t predrill them yourself, the wood will split. Very durable. Will last a long time. I am SO GLAD I went larger. I will probably section off part of the left side to use as my chick hatchery in the spring.

It also is large enough to really have a heat lamp in it for winter usage. It’s large enough to also use as a good shed if you decide not to do chickens anymore.

Decent value for the price and seems to be fairly sturdy. I have 3 hens and a rooster and it’s a good size for them, but I wouldn’t suggest keeping any more than maybe 5 chickens in this coop. The description says up to 12 chickens, but you will definitely not get 12 chickens in here.

We bought this coop as we were tearing down the old one, and I needed somewhere to keep them before the new one gets built. This is a good starter/temporary coop but probably not a super long-term solution.

The coop is as I had hoped and houses four hens. They love the sheltered area and have lots of space inside the coop. I’ll probably raise the perches as they prefer to be up higher. I was able to put this together myself.

I purchased this coup two weeks ago and assembled it on the same day. I found the instruction illustrations easy to follow. Am very satisfied with the quality of the coup. However, I have been reading several reviews related to leaking problems and wood deterioration.

In light of these reviews I have performed a few DYI jobs that I hope will avoid weather deterioration issues as follows: 1. I sealed all outside wood surfaces with wood sealer. 2. The unassembled panels are framed in a metal channel, which is “U” shaped.

This makes the coup’s structure very sturdy but it creates a way for rain water to enter and gather. The wood panels are made to resemble T-111 siding, complete with vertical grooves. Wind blown rain will run down these grooves and siding surface, and wind up laying in the channels (more on this later).

I ran a bead of silicone sealant along the channel/wood joint and made sure that the openings at the vertical grooves were also filled. I used a putty knife to work the sealant into the joint and a flat blade screw driver to work the sealant into the grooves.

It should only be necessary to do this along the bottom frame of each outside panel. However, there is a flat plate along the front and back coup panel that runs from soffit to soffit, just below the end vent.

I sealed the top of the plate/wood joint at this location as well. Please take note of a gap in the channel at the mitered bottom corner joint of each panel. I think this gap will tend to drain water out of the bottom channel frame and should be left open.

Also, it is important to NOT work the sealant into the joints too deeply as you don’t want to block the channel bottom from draining the water that does make its way in. 3. When attaching the nesting box roof, please take note that the edge opposite the locking hasp has a square tube with a continuous angle welded to its side.

The horizontal surface of this angle is intended to be pushed beneath the short nesting box panel above it. I believe that this angle is intended to help prevent water entrance along this junction. Also, after attaching the rubber flashing, I worked silicone sealant between the back of the flashing and the rear nesting box wall.

4. Now to the roof of the run and nesting box: There is a channel that runs along the sloped edge of each roof panel. I worked silicone sealant into the joint between the channel and shingle surface, since these roof slopes are rather shallow.

I didn’t use sealant on the steeper coup roof but you may wish to. I believe that the joint between the ridge cap and the shingles needs to remain open for ventilation purposes. Sorry for the length of this posting, but these fixes only cost me a few bucks and a little time.

I’m hopeful that they will improve the life of my new coup.

This is not a cheap coop. We spent more on this coop thinking we would be getting better quality and design—but after a year we are very disappointed. My husband is an engineer—setup was in fact pretty simple, that’s a pro.

But it leaks like a seive in anything more than a light drizzle. There’s ZERO ventilation, we had to add ventilation and then cover with mesh. The roost is incredibly sharp and obviously uncomfortable—sanding the sharp edges helped a bit and the hens use it a bit more now.

I think because the roost is so close to the walls they don’t feel comfortable hopping on or off which leads to them often sleeping in the nest boxes. The entire “predator proof” design hinges on incredibly close fitting metal doors which if they get a single shaving inside, refuse to close.

You will constantly be cleaning the tracks on the doors in order to be able to close them because there’s less than half a centimeter clearance and chickens aren’t tidy. I would never advise more than four chickens, and that’s if you’re allowing free range time during the day.

We have two silkies and two Wyandottes and I feel we are certainly at max capacity with them only going in at night and being let out in the early mornings. I had initially planned on adding a wheel base and frame, but the metal run is obviously not sturdy enough to allow for any kind of movement after setup (setup exactly where you plan to keep it! For a small coop it’s very heavy and I would think of it as permanent)—but it was not advertised to be used as such and I can’t fault it for that.

Just know that it’s not a good candidate to be turned into a tractor type coop.

I needed a brood house quickly and didn’t have time to build one from scratch (I thought). Overall this coop is better than most “prefab” coops, but still has some serious (correctable) flaws. One, the wood is in serious need of sealing.

We used spar poly on the outside and tung oil on the inside. This should keep it solid for 5 years. All exterior wood including the roof is in steel channel. This is great for eliminating warping and increasing strength.

However, water in the channel will be wicked into the wood. This is especially concerning on the roof. So we used roofing tar to seal all areas where water would be able to get in. Otherwise, the wood would rot out from the sides in a matter of months.

The hardware cloth is welded on the inside of the enclosure. To keep my monster chickens “IN”? It should be welded on the outside to provide better resistance to predators (think board fencing – the posts help keep the animals from pushing through.

). This is a smaller issue, but for the price, I would expect a better design. As other reviewers have mentioned, the latches are lacking for raccoons and probably others. Finally, the roosting bar is suitable for chicks or maybe bantams.

Never a large breed. A stout 1. 5 inch diameter hickory branch with the ends slotted fixed this. I got the coop on sale and promptly spent the savings on sealers, caulk and latches. This will be a wonderful brood house and with the “upgrades” I expect it to last 5+ years.

Out of the box I would expect it to fail within 2 years as designed.

#ChewyTeamRated The coop was easy to assemble and move around the yard. The nesting boxes are a great size! The chicken I have in it right now feels so comfortable in there. Chickens are such strong and yet fragile creatures.

I’ve had chickens under a year and have tended to a dog bite, prolapsed vent, and bumble foot. During that time, I used an old dog kennel as a sick bay. This coop is a huge upgrade to my sick bay / quarantine zone.

It is easier to clean and simply much more functional for chickens. Crazy enough, I found a chicken in a parking lot today. This coop is a great space for the chicken! It has space for it to walk around, peck the ground, and hide when it gets scared.

I have no idea how long this bird was out on it’s own, but this coop is now its safe place. I definitely recommend this coop. The only negative thing is I had to adjust the alignment of the latch on the nesting box to get it to latch.

It is easy to assemble & light enough to move around if need be. The removable tray makes it super easy to clean & the nesting box makes it easy to collect the eggs. The fact that it’s waterproof and has a raised perch helps protect my chicken from the weather.

Great buy! I wish the door latches were more secure, but otherwise, it’s great. Easy to assemble and strong material. I don’t think it’ll fit 8 chickens. They’ll be cramped. We use it for 6 quail and it’s good space for them.
