20 Best Cheese For Sauce (2022 Updated)

Ragu has ruined a good product, and lost this customer as a result. They changed the packaging from a resealable jar to a box and bag. You can’t reseal the new packaging. It also contains 1/2 ounce less product, but the price went up nearly a dollar.

The new foil packaging gives the sauce a metallic taste, which has been widely reported in reviews. This used to be a great sauce fo mac and cheese, etc. , but I refuse to buy it now. Everything about the brand seems to be going downhill.

First of all, just look at the reviews on their own website. NOBODY likes the new boxed packaging, which contains less product at a higher price. Everyone consistently says that they preferred the jars for a number of reasons.

Another common complaint is that the new packaging has changed the taste of the product for the worse. As I looked at the product page on the Ragu website, and the description clearly states “Available in 16oz jars”, but the photo shows the new box packaging (which states 15.

5 ounces on the box). The “find it” button doesn’t even work on their product page. If they can’t be bothered to keep a basic website up to date- what does that tell me about their food? Ragu has ruined a good product, and I’ve lost faith in the brand as a whole because they don’t respond to their customers.

I have lots of other options to fill my needs in the pasta aisle, and that is what I will do. Sad to say they have lost a lifelong customer because someone made a terrible maraketing decision and messed up a product that was a true staple item for me.

Meh. It’s a good lowish cal starter if you don’t feel like doing to flour/milk/butter thing (I never could get the hang of this and my sauces end up either tasting like flour or burnt. ) I use 1/4 cup mixed with one slice of Velveeta (the singles type, torn into tiny pieces) and about 1/6ish cup (just eyeball it) of unsweetened almond milk.

Heat it up in the microwave then whisk. A little salt and pepper. Boom. About 140 cal for decent diet cheese sauce that’s cheap, super fast and super easy. Honestly, though, if you don’t add anything it doesn’t have enough flavor to stand on its own.

For $2 and 100 calories/serving, I can live with needing to give it some help, but if you’re unwilling to do that, I wouldn’t recommend it.

I had the opportunity to sample Ragu Double Cheddar sauce recently and was very impressed with the flavor and texture of the product. I typically make my own cheddar sauce to serve with steamed vegetables, but in efforts to save time and avoid costly mistakes like the sauce curdling or “breaking” I was excited to find this pre-made version that is stabilized and equally tasty, if not better than my homemade cheddar sauce.

I had heard of Ragu brand prior to sampling the cheddar sauce, but had never tried their dairy sauce line before. I would recommend this to my siblings that like convenience and who eat dairy products on a regular basis.

I would buy this product again to make casseroles, cheddar base soups, or as a drizzle on chili cheese nachos. Overall, this is a great product with a creamy texture, balance taste, and versatility.

For over 60 years I’ve enjoyed the creme taste of Velveeta Cheese, but I believe a serious miscalculation with your Cheese Sauce has been made. I purchased this particular product to pour over Nachos and was extremely disappointed, the sodium contents of the tortilla chips which is 115mg per 9 chips along with the 1380mg of Sodium per pouch in your Velveeta Cheese Sauce was totally unpalatable, your cheese sauce alone is much too salty as consumers have become more and more heart conscious.

Please reconsider lowering your sodium levels to a much more palatable level. I that I’m giving you such a poor rating But without feedback from consumers like myself I’d hate to see this product fail.

So I had never had any kind of velveeta cheese/Mac and cheese before, so my husband wanted me to taste it, because from what he remembered when he was a child it tasted pretty good. But because it was on sale the day we where purchasing it we couldn’t get the regular version because the store we where at was out, so we grabbed this one thinking that even though it has jalapeños it should still be the same just spicy.

Wow we where so wrong. As soon as both of us took a bit, we spit it back out, ok I am not big on spicy foods but I will still eat it. But this was ridiculous, right when this touched our tongue it immediately started to burn.

I don’t know how anyone would want to eat something that is this hot. So needless to say we didn’t eat any of it and just threw it in the trash. Something that was even crazier to us about this was that most of the time you see children eatting velveeta mac and cheese, not adults, so who in their right mind thought about making something that spicy that might go in to a child’s mouth.

Anyways if you like spicy and want to burn your mouth to the point of not tasting the food your trying to enjoy then I recommend this product.

This cheese tastes so good! I’m so glad I went with this one instead of the cheddar. Makes the nachos and pretzels better. Puncturing the hike to put in the hose was a tiny bit difficult, but now I know.

Will be using this for years to come!.

Jalapeno nacho cheese looks the same as the regular nacho cheese but has nice heat to it. I really like it, I actually would get this over the regular nacho cheese.

This nacho cheese is delicious! We use this in the carnival king cheese warmer. Our customers love the taste and quality of this cheddar cheese.

The product is great but the shipping option is horrible, I use this nacho cheese for my food truck and I order large quantities. Sometimes they will ship up to 6 cans in the same box. This is too heavy for some people and the cans get absolutely destroyed.

Some you cannot even open up. I also have noticed in a few cans that there are orange/redish particles in the cheese. Not sure what it is I just throw the cans away to make sure I don’t have a lawsuit on my hands.

Seems like every can I have ever bought in store though was perfect and amazing. So unless your like me and constantly having shipments of this coming in on a daily basis do not use shipment on this product!!.

Makes awesome chili cheese. I have a recipe that I make chili cheese fries gonna share here. Throw some frozen Arby’s curly fries in the oven and follow their cooking instructions. While there cooking I take one pound of lean ground beef and cook it on the stove in a medium skillet.

After its cooked I add one pack of Taco Bell original seasoning Packet and about a half cup water and cook till the water is gone. After that I add a can of hot rotel and sauté for about 5 minutes. Next I add the Rico’s nacho cheese and set to medium and simmer for fifteen minutes and stir every minute to avoid burning the cheese to the bottom of the pan.

After times up and the fries are done put some fries on a plate and top with the amount of chili cheese you want and dig in. This will be a favorite easy dinner recipe of yours also after you try this I swear.

You can change it if you want and put it on top of nachos or Doritos. You can top it with lettuce sour cream tomatoes and pico de gallo and jalapeños if you want to as well. It’s got a really popping flavor and is made with non expensive ingredients that anyone can make and everyone can enjoy.

Can severely dented. This is my first time purchasing this product. Using an electric can opener, could only open about 1 inch of the top. Used a screwdriver to pry it open enough to get some contents out.

After trying it on nachos I’ve determined that the cheese is not that bad but not as good as I had hoped. In all fairness, the problem steming from the difficulty in opening the can could lead to my dissatisfaction with the product.

This is the first time I’ve purchased this cheese sauce. And I’m extremely pleased I did! It has a wonderful creamy, cheesy flavor with just a very tiny bite to it. We made mac n cheese casserole with hamburger and onions and it was wonderful! I think this sauce could be used in many ways.

We’re getting two huge meals out of this caan. We have two big eaters. So this really is a value buy. I’m going to use it to make a filling for hand pies next! Would be great with chips, mac n cheese, baked potatoes, veggies and much more.

We will be buying it frequently.

I stood in the aisle way too long looking at which price was better. I could buy this one for 3. 84 or a block for 4 almost 5. 00 I already had noodles at home so ultimately I went with this one and I have to say,it had to be the cheapest and greatest choice! I didn’t know they came with theee packets originally but I was so excited when I found out they did.

We enjoy these products very much so! They taste delicious because they are tasty and addicting to eat! We enjoy items that are easy and affordable. We purchase these from Walmart and yes, I would recommend these to others!.

If I had all the cheese in the world to choose from then this wouldn’t even be considered, but ya know… Again, I’m glad there IS an option though. It’s got the worst greasy looking consistency tastes a little like powdered cheese mixed up with a bunch of salt.

It’s not great but it’s “creamy” ish helps when you are making something that needs it. There’s no way I could pour this all over a plate of nachos though, it’s more of a dipping consistency.

This is quite possibly the grossest thing I have ever tasted in my life. Not only does it smell like plastic it tastes like chemicals. I actually started dry heaving after it was in my mouth. We threw the entire dinner in the garbage.

Do not buy this.

I agree with previous reviews that this was maybe one of the worst things I’ve ever tasted. I had to go dairy free while breastfeeding my youngest and tried a lot of dairy alternatives and this one was one of the worst.

I didn’t end up eating the meal that I made with it and tossed the rest of the box 🙁 It definitely does not taste anything like a traditional alfredo!.

Not my favorite cheese dip, but not too bad for an on the go take along cheese dip. My neighbor at Farmer’s Market loved this dip with her fresh jalapeno peppers! She just dipped the raw pepper in and ate it.

She said it was AWESOME!!!.

The Muy Fresco sauce cups are perfect to serve with nachos, pretzels and other snacks. The taste is very good and its much more convenient than to warm up a can because we end up wasting most of it. I highly recommend this product and would definitely purchase again if needed.

This is the most disgusting thing I’ve ever eaten. The consistency is like water and there’s absolutely NO cheese flavor at all. There’s a particular taste that at first I couldn’t put my finger on then it hit me.

It’s that taste you have leftover after puking. Sorry not sorry but that’s what it makes me think of bcuz you have a burn from the spices and the watery consistency. It’s just gross!!.

I bought this at the price thinking I can handle disappointment for less than $4. After heating it up in the microwave (the “outer layers” get warm before the “inner layers”) and getting the Tostito’s Scoops ready Upon impact and taste I was amazed.

It was delicious. Had a good level of spice. Tasted like the movies over a decade ago. Every warm bite was spot on. It was so good the other packages needed to be rationed. I never used Nacho cheese for anything past nachos and cheese, but I might be tempted.

On another note. I’m ordering more.

I like the Rico brand, but this is a lazy idea! First, Wal-Mart does help comparison shoppers: no side by side of sizes, no “We don’t have this, but ‘they’ do (other Wal-Mart stores nearby or the competition).

My old-fashioned, ‘new’ solve for replacing this: buy the cans and reusable snack cups, helping declutter the refuse centers, while doing more recycling. Another idea would be Reusing smaller baby food type of jars to carry this great brand’s product(s) afield.

Absolutely, I recommend Rico cheese products (cheddar or nacho), just be waste aware.

I wanted to know the difference between Rao’s Tomato & Basil and Marinara sauces, so I found out and will share the info here. The ingredients are the same, but the ratios are different. In this one, there is more basil, less oil, fewer calories (80 vs 100 per serving–which is significant), and the sauce is smoother (Marinara is unexpectedly SLIGHTLY ‘chunkier’).

In other words, the “Tomato” part of “Tomato Basil” seems spurious; there are no ‘chunks’ of tomatos in Tomato Basil. And both HAVE basil, Tomato Basil just has more. You can visually see this, comparing two jars.

So, they should change the name from “Tomato Basil” to “Extra Basil” in my mind, lol. And yes, you could add extra basil yourself. Also, I noticed visually that the Marinara had more onion, even though the two list them at the same place on the ingredients list.

Side-by-side, I can actually visually see the Marinara oil globs in the jar, while I don’t see any oil globs for what I’ll call now the Extra Basil version. Deliberating on whether it’s worth the extra money (it’s already extremely expensive), my partner and I are considering the extra money might be worth it just to have fewer fat calories (pay more to get less, in a way).

My partner hypothesized that they don’t need to add as much fat to get a good flavor in the Basil version, due to the extra herb. It’s logical, but I don’t know. All I know is I didn’t miss the oil in the Basil.

Tasting both blind (I’ve tried both versions in 2 days, so it’s fresh in my mind), I would have actually said the Extra Basil has more fat, just by the flavor and texture. Taste- and texture-wise, the Extra Basil version tastes to me more like a pizza sauce (I love pizza sauce).

Though you could use the Marinara as pizza sauce too. I’ve tried many bespoke pizza sauces that didn’t taste as much what I think of as ‘pizza sauce’ as the Basil. When you open the jar, it smells like ‘a good pizzeria’.

I’ve never had a pasta sauce I could just eat with a spoon, until now. I joked with a friend: “I can just skip the pasta!” Rao’s does make a pizza sauce, and I either haven’t tried it yet, or I can’t remember when I did (I think I’ve tried every pizza sauce sold here).

Rao’s pizza sauce has tweaked ingredients (adds carrots and cherry tomatos, probably for sweetness and tartness). But I’d venture to guess the biggest difference is the size of the jar, as you supposedly need less sauce to make a pizza (not in my book).

I’d have zero hesitation to use the Extra Basil version instead, especially if I were needing more than 1 jar of regular pizza sauce (and it would actually save money). While I’m at it: Cento is the budget leader in pizza sauce, Rao’s is the quality leader (in my book).

Cento, while very good for canned sauce, and while having the exact same ingredients, to my memory is less flavorful, seems ‘waterier’, and more like a straight tomato sauce. Rao’s is just something different.

I’ve also found opened Rao’s to stay good in the fridge for a long time, something you can’t do with cans. Speaking of ingredients, Rao’s uses real olive oil, and doesn’t add sugar. Actually so does Cento.

Both Marinara and ‘Extra Basil’ are incredible sauces–either is by far better than anything prefab I’ve ever had. In fact, that’s true of all Rao’s tomato sauces, although the variations are less-obvious.

For instance, I just shrugged at the ‘Vodka’ version, and its extra cost (“tasted like Rao’s”). The Arrabbiata version seems to be just “Rao’s” with red pepper flake, for heat. Although with Tomato Basil, the differences go a bit beyond the extra basil.

If you’re balking at the price, try 1 jar of either. If you want a sauce more like fresh stewed tomatos made on your stovetop, where tomatos are the star of the show, get the Marinara. If you want something SLIGHTLY ‘thicker’/smoother and a LITTLE more emphasis on spice (not heat), more like a pizza sauce or storebought pasta sauce, or you just want less fat, try the Marinara.

Can’t go wrong with either.

This is my typical to go so sauce when I don’t have time to make my own. I loved the flavor and trusted the brand and ingredients used. Yesterday I went and purchased 2 cans to use. When I opened them at home, some weird dried flaky stuff fell on my hands and all over my pasta.

When I looked closely it looked like dry worms or some type of small, dried up bugs. Dissapointed and slightly disgusted as this has never happened before. I always check my expiration dates and it looked good.

I usually trust this brand anyways. It was frustrating I had to throw away all my food. I went back to the store to report this. I initially asked if I could replace the bottles with 2 new ones instead of a refund so I went the aisle and when I grabbed a new can I noticed it also had dried up bugs on the lid and bottom.

There were at least 3 more bottles that looked the same. I checked their expiration date and it was for the year 2025 so it was odd they went bad. I decided to get a refund instead. Careful when purchasing and hopefully the sauces have all been checked and taken off the shelf.

A little discouraged after this experience to repurchase this brand. Thank you to target employees for the assistance.

Every year on my childrens birthdays, I ask them what the want for their birthday dinner. They all say the same thing. “NACHOS”. I WAS getting this sauce at the bread store. Well it closed when Hostess went out.

My daughters birthday was being planned, she is now 25, has been having nachos on her birthday since she was around 8. She starts literaly panicking over how is she going to have nachos without her special cheese sauce she now calls her birthday cheese.

Really does make the best ever nachos. I lay everything out for everyone to put what they want on them and we always have to have a huge pan of cheese sauce. Tortilla chips, hamburger seasoned with fajita seasoning, sliced ripe olives, tomatoes, onions, jalepinos, salsa, sour cream and of course BIRTHDAY CHEESE.

This cheese sauce mix is so good. You do not even have to make it into a sauce always. I boil 2 cups of dry macaroni until tender, drain, and add about1 to 1 1/2 cups of milk and 2 TBS butter, then sprinkle a packet of the cheese sauce mix right into it and stir until blended.

You may have to add more milk as the cheese sauce will thicken and the macaroni tends to absorb it. You can also add a can of drained tuna to this. It is very good.

A family favorite. Just add Tabasco for dipping chicken fingers or chips. Add salsa for a cooking sauce. Crazy good.

only I eat dishes with sauce such as cauli or pasta cheese. I bought a pack of this sauce mix to ‘save the bother’ of making just a bit from scratch. It was quick and easy but was thinner than I usually make: even cutting down on the milk it did not become thick enough to sit on top of the cauli as I like it.

The taste was also different, reminded me of processed cheese slices more than ordinary block cheese. I will be going back to making my own with my ‘cheat’ method of mixing flour and milk, boiling it up like custard till thick and cooked, then stirring in the grated cheese to melt with the heat of the sauce.

Takes just a couple of minutes in the microwave plus the effort of grating a bit of cheese. But in fairness to the product, if you like a pouring sauce with a tangy cheese taste and need 2-3 servings, this is the one for you; which is why I give it 4 stars and just take off one for my personal preference.

I like this cheese sauce. The ingredient list is more friendly than some others out there and it tastes good too. It’s the right size can. And – the price is reasonable.

I use this in so many dishes and a variety of ways it is super cheap had good flavor and good consistency it melts down well and isn’t too greasy. Good value for the price and adds good flavor to your dishes.

I have developed a reaction to MSG. I can usually tell when a food contains MSG without even reading the ingredients. Many people are OK with it. It is delicious but I just can’t eat it.

I thought I had tried every Nacho Cheese out there. Was I ever wrong! Our Ladies Bible Study did a Nacho Bar recently. I tasted the best Nacho cheese I’ve ever had! The flavor, the texture, are perfection! I learned I was eating El Mexicano Nacho Cheese! I’m sold! I will never buy any other brand!.

Excellent nacho cheese! I love that I can get it in the 6 pound can. 6 friends on movie night can get through half a can.

This cheese sauce was the perfect addition to my menu planning. The consistency was perfect, it was not overly salty and it heated perfectly to add to my meals, I used it for a total of 21 separate food dishes and I can’t believe how well all of it came to use.

Most of the meal planning went to the freezer but we kept one meal out for the kids to try immediately. The Mac and cheese turned out perfect and the consistency was excellent. This review was collected as part of a promotion, and the opinions are my own.

Usually we by ready-made cheese sauce or even frozen cauliflower cheese, but decided to give this a try especially after reading such positive reviews. Made it up with with milk, then poured it over some steamed cauliflower and popped it into the oven until golden brown.

I think next time I’ll just pour it over the cauliflower and give the oven bit a miss, as the sauce went ‘really’ thick, not appealing to me but the others seem to really enjoy eating it. Other than that all good.

I find it difficult to find good cheese sauces, but this one shocked me at how good it was. It’s very easy to make, and works well with a lot of foods! It has a good texture which makes it that much more enjoyable.

Also, very good value for money for how many portions it does.

Simple to use. Just add powder, add the boiling water and stir. I will use this use this for cheesy chips and cauliflower cheese as it tastes great. Not quick as good as home made sauce, but when in a rush ideal.

Ordered online. Fedex delivered. The box looked like it had been drug behind the truck! Three jars of the Queso dip was slammed so hard they were unsealed. The Nacho cheese was dented so bad luckily it didn’t have a hole in it as it was needed for a party the next day.

Fedex is the worst delivery company ever!.
