20 Best Child Safety Locks (2022 Updated)

My two year old is into everything! There isn’t a door,cabinet or drawer she won’t try to get into. We just had our closet redone and had some drawers put in. I didnt want to put the basic child lock on them because well most of them aren’t very nice to look at.

These magnetic locks are prefect. No one can see them and it’s keeps everyone including my toddler out of my drawers. The locks come with multiple pieces of hardware to help fit all kinds of cabinets or drawers.

I took one star off only because the key is so big and bulky.

As a new grandparent we wanted our house to be baby proof. These locks are the greatest. I wish we had them when our kids were babies. Make sure you get these type of locks. There’s another version of Safety 1st locks (online and at other retail stores) that work on the same principle.

However, the other style doesn’t have the yellow tab template which makes it so much easier to apply these locks. All you do is apply the yellow tab template to the cabinet itself. It has sticky tape to attach the template and another sticky tape they will help with the door lock attachment.

When the template is applied, you close your cabinet door against the template’s second sticky tape. Open the door and the template tab is transferred to the inside of the door. This is used as a measuring device for the lock itself.

You don’t have to do any type of measuring. All of this might sound complicated, but it really isn’t. Just a bit of advice. Make sure the locks will function thru your cabinet door before trying to apply the template and door lock.

Also, be careful buying a box that has been opened. I checked an open box (last one left) at a retail Target to see if all the parts were inside. They were. However, when I got home it appear someone tried using the template, pulled off the sticky tape, and then stuck the tape back on the template before the return.

It still worked, but it was more difficult to remove the tape again from the template and lock. They said you don’t have to screw the locks into your cabinets, but I did use the included screws. After sitting for the recommended 24 hours, the lock does appear to be firmly attached to the cabinet.

I just think over time, the tape might become loose and who wants to take a chance on that. If you’re not sure about the installation, there are YouTube videos from Safety 1st that easily explains the installation process.

I also recommend you get a second magnet key. If you misplace the key the second key will be handy. Each magnet key will open all the locks. More than likely you’ll need more locks for the entire house which will give you extra magnet keys anyway.

So far, so good! My 1 year old grandson hasn’t defeated them yet and I loved the installation tool. My only 2 drawbacks were,. 1-even with the tool I had to remove and reapply because the lock would not engage when lined up evenly with the cabinet edge.

(Hopefully the 3M adhesive will still stick for a while). and 2-I wish there was a second magnet key since I installed 2 locks in my kitchen and 2 in my bathroom. As the instructions say, these will eventually be defeated.

Never store dangerous items within your child’s reach. even behind locks. Nothing substitutes for an attentive parent!.

My garbage is in a cabinet with a door that rolls open. I have a beagle who continually got into the garbage when I was gone or out of the room. So my life has been living with a chair in the middle of my kitchen to block the door.

I did not want to drill holes in my beautiful cabinet door. I finally came upon Safety Baby locks. I decided to give them a try. They were simple to install (yes I made an alignment mistake on the first two and will have to buy more tape for those) but then bingo it was perfect.

I let it sit over night as the instructions say so that the tape adheres well. My beagle was delighted, I am sure, to see the chair moved out of the kitchen thinking she was going to have a happy day in the garbage but to her surprise the cabinet magically stays shut—she cannot get it open and she is strong and is very determined.

This is a great product if you do not want holes in your cabinet. If I, as a single retired lady, can install these, anyone can. As a ps, I read one review that said that there the cabinet opened to much when installed and her baby could reach in and pull the cabinet open, I would say that you need to put the part that clips to the latch farther back because my cabinet (after a couple of tries) stays closed and no fingers or puppy dogs paws can get in there.

To the other review that said the tape was not strong enough, did you let it sit overnight? Because I do not think that I could pull those that latch off. The only suggestion that I would have at all is for the makers to give you an option os spending a little more to get two of the unlock magnets and possibly some redo tape (something that I can pick up at the hardware store though).

This set of sliding cabinet locks are by Jool. They come in a pack of 4. These U-shape sliding safety latch locks are very easy to use (locking or unlocking), and they are very useful and effective in locking cabinets to prevent an infant/young toddler from opening them.

I have applied these cabinet locks to cabinets, and I have prevented my 18 months old son from opening them successfully. Prior to getting these cabinet locks, my son would open the cabinets and mess up the things inside.

These locks are made with plastic, and the material seems to be good and durable. I highly recommend these cabinet locks if you have an infant or a young toddler at home and want to child proof your cabinets.

I attempted this before reading the instructions and that was very silly of my because this kit is designed to be very simple for installation. There is a guide that helps install both the catch and the release lock.

It was very easy to set up once following directions. The magnetic lock works great and the key is a nice tool to use to unlock. Overall, it is unique and hides well so I would recommend it to others.

These locks are super easy to “install” – no fuss. I secured them across cabinets in my entire kitchen in fewer than 5 minutes. They prevent baby from opening the cabinets and shutting his fingers in the doors a well as the most obvious- getting into dangerous products.

I use them on my kitchen cabinets and on my bathroom cabinets. They are so helpful. I keep my nephew and he gets into everything and that’s why these are so helpful. These keep him from getting into all my cabinets where I keep my cleaning supplies.

I just love wittle products. So affordable and they actually work!!!.

We have used them on our bathroom sink, kitchen sink, kitchen cupboards and dvd cabinet. These have been very universal. We have some trips coming up this summer and will be taking these with us as they are a slim but sturdy design.

These are very easy to use, I even used them with acrylic nails on with ease. I will be buying more in the future.

These work great for us. They adhere without issue, and my son really pulls on them, but so far they have not come apart or even budged. Installing them can be a bit tricky because there is no guide to use, you have to just line them up and eyeball it basically.

But it’s not at all difficult, it just adds about 30 seconds worth of work. I securely attached the catch to the inside of the cabinet or drawer first then I lightly stuck the lock piece to the door so it stuck just enough to make sure I’d lined it up correctly but was still be able to remove it if I needed to adjust the placement.

After I was sure they were on right I pressed down for 30 seconds. Also I waited 24 hours after I installation to ensure proper adherence prior to use. I don’t know that 24 hours is necessary but I figured it couldn’t hurt and ours have remained strong.

The keys do get dropped often, and they will pop apart, but we just put it back together. Just be sure you have the polarity of the magnet facing the correct direction otherwise it won’t open your lock.

I used a sharpie to mark the side of the magnet that is supposed to face the lock so I never have to double check it before I put the key back together. All in all I’d say a great product to discreetly keep your little ones safe and out of your drawers and cabinets without ruining the aesthetic of the room.

I purchased two sets of these several years back and they worked great. The adhesive is very strong, and I’d guess that the reviewers who can’t get it to stick either aren’t applying them properly, or it’s a problem with the surface on the inside of their cabinets, which can’t be helped.

They’re a little tricky to apply, so I placed the latches very (very!) gently at first, and ensured that they were the proper distance to catch the ledge once closed, then either adjusted and tried again or applied pressure to make it permanent.

I have had to remove a few, and needed a razor blade to get the foam off, but did not need to use any solvents. The REAL REASON that I’m writing this review, however, is because of the outstanding customer service.

As I said, I have a couple of older sets, and have a new little one who is starting to get into trouble, and I wanted to secure a few more places. Upon ordering a new set, I found that the magnets had been reversed.

I couldn’t use the new “keys” with the old “locks” and vice versa, unless I held the “key” backwards. I contacted their customer service and learned that this happened when the switched manufacturers, and to make up for it, they sent me two new sets to replace the old ones.

This was unexpected, but greatly appreciated. It’s always nice to come across a company that will stand by their products. All in all, highly recommended.

I bought this item in July 2019. It has been sitting on my counter for over 3 months. Today, I finally installed it after catching my 2 year old in the snack cupboard for the 4th time. (We had the kind of child lock that gets pushed down to open and his arms are small enough to fit in the gap).

These installed in less than 2 minutes for the first lock (including instruction reading time) and less than 1 minute for every lock after that. I put the key up out of his reach and that was all it took.

No more snack stealing for him! No more worrying that he will get in under the sink with the cleaning supplies and dishwasher tabs. These are so easy to use and I love not needing the bulky white locks on the outside of the cupboard anymore.

Another huge selling point for me is that it is a 3M-type product with the sticky stuff that easily pulls off (with a little effort) if you need to move it around. No more drilling pilot holes and dealing with the worlds smallest screws to install other kinds.

I will never go back to using any other kind of child lock. I plan to tell everybody I know about this product and I’m going to order 4 more sets to do every cabinet in my house!.

The Door Buddy will be a great product when we can use it. We got it to hopefully give our two cats a place of solace in our master bedroom/bath area from our new puppy that we just got. Well, unfortunately, to be at the size we need to let our cats through, the puppy (two months old) he was still small enough to get through the door.

The puppy’s getting bigger every day and will too big to get through the open space and give the cats their place of solace, we desire for them to have. One cat is still very unhappy the dog is in the house.

He has rocked her world. The other, he’s taken on Alpha role, but the pup hasn’t figured that out yet and continually tries to play with both of them. Thank you for making this product. It’s something we wish we’d had several years ago with our border collie, which was our oldest’s service dog.

He LOVED the cats’ litter box! Ick!!!!.

We just moved (temporarily) into an apartment and although our cats arent living with us yet, we have a 1 and 2 year old that can open all of the doors and get into things we dont want them to get into.

Our doors have handles, not knobs, and I wanted something that I could install that wouldnt be permanent. I ordered a couple of other products that used but it seemed as though they were really expensive or required me to take the handles off, place the product, and put the handles back on.

That didnt work for me. A friend told me about Door Buddies and at first I just ordered 2. I then realized that they worked so well that I wanted 2 more. Let me share that when I installed the first one, I didnt fully read the instructions and I put it on backwards.

I had to use a hairdryer to take it off and use one of the extra adhesive pads to put it on the right way. To remove, it definitely takes a lot of heat from the hairdryer but once you pull it off the door or door jam, it doesnt leave a mark! Im very impressed and thats why we now have 4! I HIGHLY recommend this product, even if you dont have pets just to keep children out of areas you dont want them in.

This is 100% worth the money! When I added a kitten into my household 1 month after bringing a puppy home I quickly realized I needed a “safe haven” for the cat to be able to retreat to and also a way to keep the dog out of the litter box and the cat’s food while allowing the cat access to the room 24/7.

this was the ultimate solution. I’m able to adjust the width that I want to allow the door to stay cracked open without allowing my dog to sneak in. The door wedge is great because it doesn’t allow the door to slam shut when the a/c turns on and off.

The cat knows it can paw the door open just enough to walk through whenever it wants to. It’s affordable and less than $20, too.

At first, I purchased the cabinet slide locks. They are good, but not great. There is a pointed end that my curious baby kept stabbing himself on. So, I decided to try the Outsmart flex lock and fell in love! 1.

I don’t have to worry about my little one stabbing himself. 2. The previous lock dug into my cabinet and created surface damage. The outsmart lock does not present the same issue. 3. The decoy button is a fantastic idea.

I keep returning to the store to buy new outsmart locks and replace my old slide locks. I love this product and wish I knew there was a 4-pack sooner! The value pack is far more affordable than the individually packaged locks.

I think these are great! I’ve had other, similar styled locks, but they were trickier to unlock. These I can unlock one handed without much trouble. And they keep my 18 month old out of the cupboards he doesn’t belong in.

Funniest thing? My husband was super confused until I told him the “button” was a decoy. I think they’re great overall. I was ready to give these a 5 star! Unfortunately, of the 4 I received, one ended up defective and I had to cut it off.

Not sure if it was just something that didn’t click right, or I put the zip tie pieces too tight or what. I haven’t had any issue with the other 3,and I would totally recommend them. I’m going to assume that the bad one was a fluke and move forward!.

Work well and versatile. They are a bit of a pain to initially put on but after that they do hold up well. I noticed if you have the straps tighter in close proximity that they can be a little difficult to open.

In my case I just open the doors of the cabinet slightly while unlocking and they come right out. Maybe not the best choice for a cabinet you need to get into all the time for that reason. But they come off much easier when loosely attached like I use for extra security on one of my baby gates.

Love the decoy button, my husband even tried the button before he knew they opened differently.

I didn’t use the installation tool they give you. Some of my drawers are made a little different, so I had to adjust how far up/down to put the lock so it would latch. The adhesive theu put on these is pretty strong, but not strong enough for my toddler.

She pulls as hard as she can until she gets these open. I’ve put super glue on these to try to keep them on. Two of my drawers still have the locks on them. The other two are a lost cause. I gave this three stars because they do work and I like the ease of using the key/magnet to open them.

However if your child is as persistent as mine, these probably won’t work. Save yourself the money and get ones that attach with screws.

Thank goodness for these locks! I haven’t had a toddler in the house for a few years. That said we have several families in our social circle who visit us regularly with their toddlers. We’ve lost many a glass or dish to a curious toddler the parent couldn’t keep up with.

These are fantastic. I simply installed them (without any tools) and waited to see how our next toddler guest would do on their next visit. Of course they tried their luck but simply moved on when the cupboards wouldn’t budge.

These locks won’t be going anywhere anytime soon as they are a lifesaver. I can highly recommend them to anyone with a toddler in their home regularly.

Our autistic 3 year old daughter loves to go in the bathrooms, play with soap and toilet paper and flush the toilet repeatedly, including sometimes flushing objects down the toilet (I already had to replace one toilet!).

By the way, we first tried Safety 1st’s toilet locks, but they are worthless crap. We have two other small children and can’t keep an eye on her every second, so we installed these locks on the levers.

Wow! These are absolute life savers. She cannot open the bathroom doors and so we don’t have to follow her around the house every second. I’ve seen some reviews of people saying they can get locked in their rooms with these things — nope! The instructions clearly state you must pull the lock ALL THE WAY DOWN when you open the door.

This is not hard folks. I love these things and now have 6 of them installed on bathroom and bedroom doors in our home. TIP: you can buy single ones at Target for $12. 99 but if you order Target online you can get a 2 pack for $19.

These locks are on almost every door of the home we bought. They are near impossible to remove without damaging the paint on the door. The black adhesive does not come off cleanly, even while using a hair dryer and fishing line.

Have been trying to get the remaining adhesive off of the door, off and on, for the past two days. We have not yet completely removed the adhesive on the first door, and we still have six more doors to do.

Going to buy some Goo Gone and hope it works!.

Install Very easy to install. You just peel the backing and stick it on. It was a bit off on our door because the design of our door isn’t completely flat but the little bit that wasn’t adhesed to anything didn’t make a difference.

Use It was easy for most people in our house to use. My husband and I had no issues with locking/unlocking. My parents had a harder time. Like other people mentioned, you can lock it without pressing the buttons, so that was an issue once our son was a bit older.

During a party, an older guest got locked in the bathroom because he put the lock in place while the door was open and then couldn’t pull the lever down when he tried to come out. Removal You’ll have to use some hacks.

It was easy enough once I used some tricks. I used fishing line to “floss” between the door and the lock. Once the lock was off, the black adhesive backing stayed. I used a blow dryer to soften the adhesive and started at a corner to peel slowly until it was all off.

I kept the heat on the entire time so just be careful.

The concept of this is fantastic, as it allows you to stop little hands getting into the spirits cabinet without any visible attachments. BUT, the screws seem to dull the effectiveness of the magnets.

I thought it didn’t work at all, until by chance, it happened to work with just one of the four screws still in the main latch. The magnet didn’t work at all with all four screws in. Even with the pin attached, the strength of the magnets needs to be dialled right up.

Spent the Sunday morning gathering tools and drills. Drilled the cupboard and fit all the parts only to find that the magnet to open the latch is not strong enough to go through my standard cupboard door.

Very frustrating.

Don’t listen to the last review. I install them all the time for a child care centre. They didn’t work for him because there is a special pin that is supplied that adds extra magnatizm for the latch to work.

Hence if you don’t read the instructions you won’t get it to work propperly.

I absolutely love the idea of using a magnetic lock instead of the kind that kids can learn to open. It worked great and was easy to install. I love how unique and this item is, and the price is incredible for this since it won’t break like the old fashion kind that kids can break if they stick something in (children are smarter than we think, people! 😉 ) Anyway, I love it and I would recommend it to any parent with a curious child! The only down side is there’s only one key, and I am known to lose stuff.

maybe a spare key would be helpful; or 5 spares in my case. ;).

I’ve had a lot of trouble finding a locking fixture that would keep my toddler out of certain drawers and the oven. Everything broke within days. Not these ones! These locks stay on the surface and actually work.

My 5 year old even has trouble opening the oven and drawer with this lock on! As an adult, I can navigate it just fine at any point and I find that it makes me less worried when I’m not immediately next to my toddler when I have the oven on.

Overall, these were super easy to install and even easier (for an adult) to use. I will definitely get more of these for other areas of my house.

This is a great product. I love that I can use these in places that I can’t get anything else to fit. Like the silverwear drawer, where all the knives are. I feel much better having my toddler run around in the kitchen with these keeping him safe from sharp, pokey things.

I would highly recommend these.

These locks came in handy with my four year old twins. They love going into the bathroom and pulling out the drawers so they can stand on them. I put these locks on the drawers and for some reason they didn’t even attempt to try and unlock them.

These locks kept my kids from climbing and my bathroom clean. I will be buying more for my kitchen.

Great for keeping my little guy out of the kitchen cupboards, they have a two button system. You have to click in the button on the front and then push the larger button on the bottom to release it from each other.

Your going to have to use both hands which is a little difficult if your baby doesn’t let you put them down. You do have to use a little force to get them to click back together again and to release it but I think that’s the point of it.

If you have long nails it’s going to be a change but I can be done. It does keep them out and does it’s job. This might be a little difficult for an older couple like grandparents but that is preference.

I was a little skeptical buying these with all the reviews saying how tricky they are to open. I was able to open these easily on the first try, so please don’t let that keep you from purchasing. After showing her and having her practice a few times, our five-year-old (we bought these for our infant – not the five-year-old!) was able to open them as well.

The one downside to unlocking them is that you will have to stoop down to the level of the cabinet handles to unlock because the unlock function is quite small. We currently have the loops left loose and just slip one loop off of one of the knobs each time we want to get into the cabinets.

Our daughter is only 11 months old and hasn’t figured them out just yet. However, in trying to open the cabinets and finding they would only open a couple inches, she became disinterested and isn’t even trying to get into them anymore! We will still keep them on and tighten them up according as she gets older.

They aren’t the prettiest locks and certainly don’t blend into our wooden cabinets, but we don’t have any issues with that. These locks say, “Hey! We have a small child in our house, and they are NOT getting into the household cleaners (or glass bowls or boxes of cereal or sponges, etc.

This product works well for purposes intended. I use it to keep my cats from scavenging my pantry. I was previously using a hook to lock the pantry but they wised up and opened it enough to get in. With this device the folding doors stay closed enough to keep them out.

The device is a bit difficult to open since you almost have to unlock both portions before you can open. My fix was just removing the bottom lock so that it only has the middle lock. Now everyone can get into the pantry and we can keep the felines out.

Good product. Cheap and reliable. Using screws as fixings makes the cupboard doors more secure. Sticky labels used on other models will not be secure enough. It does take some time to fix with screws though.

Use a bradawl to make a tiny hole and screw in. It will leave holes though after you remove so maybe not be considered by all.

These are a good idea as they are hidden, quite fiddly and tight to fit. I am sure that when people forget that they are fitted, and yank the kitchen doors open, the catches will break. so get spares or buy exterior catches!!!.

Didn’t work very well I’m afraid. Our 13 month baby managed to rip them all out.

These were given to us as a gift. We use them on the bathroom cabinet (no cleaners under there) and we also keep the door to the bathroom closed. We use these mainly in case our one and a half year old is in the bathroom with us.

to deter her from going through the cabinets. I don’t that these can be completely trusted. The magnetic locks are 100% trustworthy so we use those for cabinets with cleaners etc in them. Effectiveness Depends on the type of handles/knobs you have on your cabinets.

We have fairly small knobs (about 3/4 inch to 1 inch in diameter) and our one and a half year old can pull this off of them without having to loosen the gadget. Ease of Use Fairly easy to use. They can be a pain to open and close.

You don’t want to use these on cabinets that you use often. Safety I don’t know that there are any safety risks with these. Durability They feel pretty flimsy and I think the “teeth” on ours are getting worn down and not holding as well.

These do get the job done. They are not pretty to look at, and are not the easiest to use however! We went from using the one finger latch screwed inside the cupboard to these because we are temporarily taking care of and living in my mom’s old house util she sells it, so we cannot put anything permanent anywhere.

For that reason, and that reason alone, these are great! On the other hand, I can not for the life of me undo these or do them back up one handed. They get stuck pretty easy or turn at a weird angle that where you need to turn and realign the latch while holding the “U” shaped design still.

I also don’t enjoy looking at them on my cupboards. The only other positive thing I can gather from them is that my daughter sees that it is babyproofed and doesn’t bother trying where as the hidden ones she would reef on the cupboard for a minte before giving up and depending on her mood, break down in a temper tantrum.

Atleast this way is straight forward and honest with her. Overrall, they get the job done, but aren’t the easiest to use. If you have the option to put holes in your cupboards for the one handed latch, do it! It’s worth it!.

This isn’t the most attractive safety item I have put up, but it works well. I use it to keep our entertainment stand closed. It attracts the attention of my 1 year old and he will mess with it, but he has not been successful in opening the doors to date.

It appears strong enough to do the job. Installation could not be easier. As most childproofing projects require hardware and headaches, this simply attaches to the two knobs and you slide the lock tight.

The best part about this item is that its really inexpensive. This attracted me to it in the first place. I have recommended this item to friends and would purchase again to hold cabinet doors with knobs together.

It comes in various sized packages so I went with the 3 pack. I have heard of these eventually breaking, but for the price, I don’t mind popping another one onto the doors of my cabinets. This also will not allow your child to crack open the doors, which is important as they can easily pinch fingers.
