20 Best Chipmunk Kill Trap (2022 Updated)

I think this trap is a little over-priced for the quality of the metal, but it does work. I mounted my traps to exterior grade plywood which I painted with a quality exterior finish. I used a stir stick screwed to the plywood inside the trap for a bait tray.

To the manufacturer: use higher quality steel. Weld a bait tray to the center of the trap. Weight the trap so no building is required( i watched chippers try to use the handles to flip the trap). Then you will have an ace product.

To the folks who cannot make this work- mount it securely. Use a bait tray. use chunky peanut butter and sunflower seeds for bait, place a tiny amount of bait just outside and just inside the trap doors, place the trap near corners and cover where you have seen the chippers run, do not check the traps constantly-no more than twice a day, place the traps under cover or on good weather days only (prevent washing your bait away) do not leave the traps out at night unless you like catching rats and luring in skunks or possums.

My problem turned out to be voles, not chipmunks as I thought, and the trap worked sufficiently to identify the culprit! LOL. So far I’ve caught two. Unfortunately they seem very suspicious of the cage, and I’m catching more using conventional mousetraps, sadly.

P. S. There was a flaw in the trap I bought: the rings holding one of the swing doors were too tight and no critter could push through that side. I had to loosen the rings with pliers and ripped some of the rubber coating so I will probably get rust, grrr.

If you are even looking at this trap you have a chippy problem and should buy it. I am a nature lover. I don’t want to kill anything that I don’t eat, and I have respect for any critter that can survive the brutal northern Wisconsin winter where it gets to -30F sometimes.

When the chips were just digging a couple of holes in the yard I was Ok with it. Then they went into the camper and did huge damage. Then I saw one jump up into my car engine and start his mischief. The final straw was when they started burrowing under the front steps and foundation to the house.

That is when the hammer dropped. Spring traps came up empty with the bait gone. I bought the Chipmunkinator here at WalMart and it came really fast. I baited the center, and just inside and outside of the doors with some salted.

The best rodent trap so far. Used the old style wood/spring type mouse trap with no luck. Have a chipmunk problem and they would trip the old style traps and get away. Not this one. Absolutely deadly everytime its deployed.

Well made, sturdy and reasonabley priced. Excellent.

Catch mice and chipmunks (seven so far). I was going to leave the chipmunks alone, but they ruined the cabin filters in my cars and the air filter on the diesel tractor – declare war! Great product!!!

This is a really good and strong trap. Built to last and with a great quality. After a few days, no more rodents in my backyard. Recommended . You wont regret it..!!!!!

I must have Houdini the Squirrel in my backyard. I tried this trap close to 20 times. I started by going by the instructions. unsuccessfully, and then had to try other ways. This trap simply did not catch that squirrel.

At first I placed the food as instructed, but each time it was gone and cage door was closed. Not sure how he kept getting out. After that the squirrel had the trigger mechanism figured out and was able to remove the food (smeared peanut butter) without triggering it.

The food was gone and the door wide open. I give up.

I bought this to trap and relocate chipmunks that were burroughing in my new sod. I investigated after the purchase and learned that this is not legal in Ontario. The relocation subjects the critter to excessive difficulty because it could be challenging another critter’s territory and also finding food and shelter in the new environment would be difficult.

So not so humane after all. I returned the trap for refund.

I strongly recommend this product: its non-lethal and humane; it’s very sturdy, well made, and good quality; and it’s easy to use. Only one problem: the rat that we are trying to catch has a genius-level IQ and won’t go in the trap.

Not for tasty banana, delicious roast chicken, or even yummy peanut butter. It’s a complete fail so far. Oh well!.

The Havahart Small 2-Door Live Animal Trap is a great trap for catching small pests that have found their way into your home. I suspect I was hearing rats in my crawl space and got the trap to see what I could catch.

When dealing with rats, you have to wait a while before they are comfortable enough to enter the trap because they stay away from anything new. I set the trap with peanut butter because they are very attracted to the smell.

After a few days, I trapped a brown roof rat. I reset the trap in seconds and placed it back in place. Thankfully, I did not trap another rat. I found the suspected hole and sealed it with chicken wire, steel wool, and foam to prevent other rats from trying to get in.

The Havahart Small 2-Door Live Animal Trap is a great product for either rural or city living. It stores away very easily and does rust when exposed to the elements.

I received this Havahart Small 2-Door Live Animal Trap from the Spark Reviewer program just in time. Recently I heard noises in the attic and determined that it was a squirrel that was entering the attic from an exhaust fan opening that was missing the metal screen.

I placed the Havahart Live Animal Trap in line with the exhaust fan opening in the attic after baiting it with a peanut butter/sunflower seed combo bait and waited. The next day after returning from work, VIOLA, Mission Accomplished! I covered the trap and removed the squirrel from the attic and it now lives by the lake, well away from my home.

I have since replaced the missing screen to avoid future intrusions. Thank You Havahart!.

I’ve purchased more of these than I should have, if I’d have known they are so cheaply made and worthless. I’ve had every complaint imaginable, traps not locking open, bait gone and trap not tripped, bait and trap gone, and rarely do I actually catch one.

They are difficult to clean without having to get your hands into the filth, and it’s just a poor design, poor functioning, and barely capable of catching a rat. These are so lightweight that one rat is wearing one as an adornment and went about his business.

The trap and him are gone! I tried the wooden Tomcat traps and these are worse. I can’t get a package with 2 good traps in ANYTHING I buy from Tomcat, regardless of what it is. I’m so disgusted because I see Made in USA on the package, and to see this make me ill.

Is this what Made in USA means now? OMG, we’re in bigger trouble than I thought! Tomcat has ZERO Quality control or quality assurance and doesn’t seem to care. Maybe it’s time to move to Costa Rica? For God’s sake, have some dignity and respect for what you sell.

This is ridiculous! EVERYTHING YOU SELL IS CHEAP CRAP!! I’M DONE! I’ve never been so disappointed in any product!.

As fall has approached and the farmers are taking down the crops the field mice seem to love to scurry into nearby houses. As the weather drops we seem to see them around more even with getting a cat.

I am absolutely terrified of the things so getting somthing to help was a need. Having 2 dogs and 1 cat we couldn’t do the sticky traps or the set ones as the animals would set them off. We also did not want to use poison and risk that alone.

So here we are looking for more options and I see this. This is very easy to set up and we have caught 2 so far. I would like to say this has been the best trap used for us. It actually works. I like how this has the poison inside and protected so nothing else will get ahold of it.

The window is a nice addition so you can see if the bait has been messed with at all and needs refilled. Look forward to it helping out home this year and not having the pesky problem.

Kills instantly as others have said. Spiked jaws prevent rats from wiggling their way out. But plastic locking mechanism wears out after dozen or so uses making it useless.

I’ve continued to eliminate the chipmunks destroying my raspberries. I think I’ve got 6 now with just one trap. Also got a mouse/vole that was digging trails all through my perennial/bulb garden.

Hawk: 1 mouse Sticky traps: 2 mice Jaws: 15 chipmunks, 5 mice Jerry rigged box to cover back b/c chipmunks entered back way, got the peanut butter, set off trap & escaped.

I was hoping to catch some juvenile rats that have been eating from and contaminating our rabbit’s food crocks. These tramps are not as big and so far not as effective as other similar styles available.

unfortunately, I will have to go back to the brand that was successful at trapping rats.

Well, the first rat was dispatched quickly with this; however, the second rat got caught and smashed the trap to get out of it.

Bought 3 of these to help in controlling a chipmunk invasion around our house. Killed 14 chipmunks. They are easy to load (I just used sunflower seeds) and easy to dispose of the bodies. I discovered that the traps should be located under and among plants (not in the open).

These traps are also nice in that you tell easily if they have been sprung.

The first day I left this trap out I caught 15 rats in one afternoon!! If you have a serious rat problem this will definitely help put a dent in the population. So far I haven’t even had it for a week and have caught over 25 rats.

One thing I will say about this trap is that disposing the rats after catching them is not for everyone. There is one tiny little door at the bottom of the trap and you have to shake the trap around until the rats fall out into the trash.

I honestly don’t know how I have become such a desensitized monster, I guess after the last year of seeing them terrorize my ducks I have become less empathetic. Getting rid of any pests will suck no matter what you do, but this trap seems to be one of the most humane methods.

100% would recommend.

I HAVE A BARN FULL OF EXHIBITION POULTRY WITH FEED IN FRONT OF THEM AT ALL TIMES. There are bins full of TONS of shelled corn to feed them stored here also. At night, the rats crawl out from surrounding fields, tunnels, crevices in concrete, hay bales.

I have been holding them at bay with hundreds of dollars of high potent rat bait from expensive exterminators. They eat the bait, many die, more appear. First night I put out the ratinator along a back barn wall, with a poison cube and piece of sardine for bait, I caught 16 rats of all sizes! It was SO EASY and non toxic to simply place the trap full of rats,in the plastic drown tub provided , filled with barn water, and sink.

After a few minutes of doing chores, I lifted the trap out, emptied it ,and did my count. Bait cube consumption has gone WAY DOWN in a couple weeks using the Ratinator. The trap will work for a LONG TIME!!! NOT like having to buy more bait cubes every week! MONEY well spent for years to come.

Wish the TSC stores stocked these!.

We keep ducks and struggle to keep rat populations down. We don’t want to use poisons or glue, snap traps are unreliable and no one wants to empty them, as well as being potentially dangerous for other animals.

I got this trap-followed recommendation to tie the door open for one day and let rats eat the bait. Next morning untied the door and caught SEVEN rats by the time I checked it at 3pm. Gassed them all with co2 right in the trap and shook them out, rebaited and all ready for a new batch.

This is life-changing for my household!.

I don’t like spring traps so I bought a gravity drop door cage. The con to that is that the critters can get out. In my case it’s used for trapping feral cats. If the cats hit the door hard enough at the right angle the door opens and they bolt.

This fork works fantastic if you get to the trap quick enough. I use a motion sensor that beeps in the house to alert me and then I quickly go out to the cage and put a weighted bucket in front of the door.

Then I put the fork in place and lock it in position with the included clip. I also lock the door with a caribiner. If the critter has to be in the cage for more than a few hours you can adjust the fork to slowly push the critter backwards so you can safely open the door and put water and food inside.

Then close the door and lock it. You can then readjust the fork to the front of the cage so the water and food are now on the side with the critter. It’s been quite handy all around and so very easy to use.

I was turned onto Tomahawk by a colleague who recommended them to me for trapping a local cat to be TNR’d. The issue is that when she recommended Tomahawk, and I used one of her’s it had a gated opposite end (Model 606NC) which allowed you to reach into the trap and remove / install the bait on the opposite side of the slam gate.

Makes it really easy to clean out or feed your trapped TNR kitty. Problem is, that I didn’t look at the description when I bought this #106 unit, as I assumed they all had the removable end on them. My bad, obviously.

They’re stilll a great trap, and work extremely well. The trap mechanism is superb. smooth and accurate. It’s a very high quality unit, and I will definitely use it. IMO, all these traps should have a removable end for easier access, but that’s just my opinion.

I’ve purchased a number of different Tomahawk traps, but this particular one is the best for a few reasons. One of the reasons is it’s a fantastic price for the quality you get. I think a paid around $50 something compared to the $87 for another Tomahawk model a bit heavier.

The second reason I would recommend this model is that it is a perfect size and weight. I’ve ordered others that are larger and heavier. No cat is coming out of this one though!! Very nice quality. The trip plate is larger than my other traps I believe.

Dual handles add to the benefit of hauling this around. I trap quite a bit for a number of colony cat feeders plus I help the local shelter with some of their complaints for trapping feral cats. I own 8 other traps including Safeguard and different Tomahawk models, so I’m speaking from experience.

If I decided to purchase any more traps, this is the one I’d go with.

For the past couple of years, there have been 2 squirrels that play at the rear of our home every morning and evening. A couple of weeks ago one of the squirrels chewed a large whole in our screened-in lanai/porch, and was running around inside the lanai area.

I opened the screened door and chased him out. At that point we figured we would try to replace the large section of screen in the near future. The very next morning, two additional holes were made in the screen, next to the original hole.

It was clear at this time we needed to be rid of the squirrels before we replaced the screen. We bought the Squirelinator after watching a video about how it worked. We set it up in the rear yard, placing black sunflower seed and a couple of peanuts right in the middle of the cage, making sure the squirrels could only reach the food by going inside, and not by reaching through the cage.

We also set a couple of weights on top of the release door on the top of the cage, just to make sure they didn’t get out before we discovered them inside. The next morning, Two squirrels were in our cage.

I’m figuring it’s our usual 2. Since their departure, we have not observed any other squirrels in our back yard. But, we’ll have the cage ready if another problem arises.

This thing works! I had a troupe of Arizona ground squirrels making a royal mess of my yard — nibbling plants, taking a single bite out of each tomato and zucchini, and digging, digging, digging holes large and small everywhere.

Anyway, the first morning I put it out, baited with a couple of peanuts and sunflower seeds, I’d caught two before finishing my first cup of coffee. I had intended to drown them in the basin, then chickened out and drove them a couple of miles away.

Second morning, same thing: two caught within an hour, then relocated. Third morning, I caught one, steeled myself, and sent it to a watery grave. It took no more than 15 seconds to succumb. I put the sodden carcass out where scavengers could find it.

Fourth day, identical to Day 3. This thing is fabulous. Whether you intend to drown or relocate, be sure to spend a couple 3xtra bucks for the optional basin. You’ll want it to keep your prey from soiling the car as you drive them to their new home.

And of course you’ll need it for underwater demolitions too.

So far we have caught several of the non-native tree squirrels, one at a time. I didn’t expect to catch multiple squirrels at once so that’s fine. The tub is deep enough to drown them quickly, but there is so little room that it’s kind of creepy knowing that the squirrels are trying to get out with only about 1/2 inch water between their noses and the air above.

Fortunately they quickly go into torpor. You also have to fill the tub on completely level ground or it will be too shallow on one side, even on a slight incline. I had it shipped to store so it wouldn’t be damaged but the box was still really beat up, obviously smashed, torn, and opened on one end.

I might as well have had it shipped to home and saved a long drive to the store. When we fill it with water there is a fast leak at the corner where the box was most severely damaged and the water draws down pretty quickly.

So far no response from Tractor Supply on my reported damage. If it hadn’t been damaged I would give it a higher rating. The store should never give a customer a product in such a badly damaged box. They didn’t give me a receipt either.

So good rating on the product, bad rating on the store.

This is an easy-to-use terminator for rodents of the chipmunk size. After years of repairing sunken concrete pads, enlarged holes in foundations and chewed porch screens, I decided to take action. Other products, such as the gas-based so-called “giant-killers” didn’t work.

They just polluted the atmosphere without preventing rodents. Similarly, live traps required baiting and additional handling. Take these dears to a park or other location and you end up improving the chipmunk genetic pool.

Chipmunks in the woods can stay there. But, when they intrude and target the house foundation, it’s war. I use these in pairs about 2-3 inches apart, with the open jaws facing the wall. No bait is used.

The secret is to locate the traps along the chipmunk run along the house.

Very effective. Simple to operate and no mess to deal with. I placed it under a small inverted cardboard box with a rectangular hole cut out in one side and put a rock on top of it for weight to keep the trap out of the elements.

First three days caught two chipmunks. I’ve filled in the holes they made in my lawn and have yet to see any further activity. Very pleased to have the results I had hoped for after trying regular snap traps with no success.

A friend loaned me one to try out. Caught chipmunks, moles and mice. Immediately bought 3, I tied the traps to old milk crates and place these opened end crates on top. I heard sometimes a critter may not die immediately which could drag a few feet from where trap was set.

3 traps Bought and caught 3 pesky chipmunks on first day! Carried crates to trash bin, reset and now I can continue my yard work.

The trigger mechanism for this trap is faulty. I have tried many, many, many times to get it to “set” and it won’t. I have followed the instructions carefully to no avail. I even filed the place two parts come together (they are supposed to slip apart when the critter steps on the treadle but they slip without any help on their own).

It’s not a good design. It may be that the small size of the trap, with smaller sized wires, is the cause. I have a larger one that sets rather easily.

very well built cage. i bought more than one size. the only thing about the large is it is heavy. so heavy i thought, wow if i do catch anything in it i wont be able to lift it myself. not a bad thing, but when u live alone it is.

very solid cages. highly reccomend.

Haven’t set it yet because its a little stiff. I want to use it on a squirrel. I think I can file it down. I don’t want to use lubricant because of the smell. Great size and price.

The trap was excellent. I really thought that a squirrel was running around and creating havoc in my laundry room but when I set the trap,using a small bowl of nuts as bait, I actually caught a large rat! I would definitely recommend this medium sized cage if you have a rat/squirrel issue.

This is the perfect trap in every way. I’ve been waging war on these destructive rodents for forty years using every imaginable trap, repellent and poison I could get my hands on. I bought a 24 pack and was astounded at the ease of baiting, setting and re-setting.

I just ordered a second 24 pack. They NEVER miss! I’m sure I’ve caught nearly a hundred mice in and around my house, garage, motorhome, boats and shop. Revenge is so sweet. I still can’t believe there can be that many of those dirty rodents.

These traps, not only trap, but quickly kill mice. Haven’t had any empty, snapped traps. Haven’t found any live mice in traps. Have had old style traps , in my camper, for months. Only caught2 mice, but had traps licked clean, withoutsnapping.

Put 4 traps near old traps, caught 3 mice 1st night, and 3 more, next 2 day. Worth every penny!.

Awesome seller and traps. I highly recommend them. They are so easy to set and then release the mouse. I can’t stand setting the old wooden trap because of how tricky they could be and also releasing the mouse was not much fun.

Well lookie here!!! Someone has actually built a better mouse trap! Jawz traps are significantly better than the old wood and wire snap traps we’ve used for decades. The wide surface and strong spring never miss the target.

The trigger system works perfectly and easy to set. Not one cheese-gone-no-mouse yet. Super easy carcus disposal with no sticking to the trap. There is nothing I don’t like about these traps. Try them, you won’t be disappointed.

Hasn’t worked for me yet – mouse is eating the bait and triggering the trap without getting caught. The hinge on one of the traps broke after the third time it was triggered. Will be trying something else.

This rodent trap does the job! Don’t like killing critters but I also can’t afford to fix the damage they cause to my car’s interior and exterior (under the hood). No messy clean up (usually) and I seldom have to re-bate the trap – also, and this is important, bating and setting the trap is not as scary or difficult as the old-fashioned traps.

I recommend this product.

I was looking for an instant kill product. I did not like the fact that it did not kill the pest instantly. No problems with the purchase. Just not a product for me.

I have LITERALLY trapped, and subsequently released, 21 skunks in roughly 3 years. I did have to replace the plastic window on the top due to deterioration from the weather. The last skunk trapped literally broke out by breaking the trap under the window.

I now have a new trap. I would recommend this trap to anyone in need. Important note: as long as you release your skunk, further than 4 miles away, he/she will not be able to return to your area.

I always question those who give a product one star. I read the reviews before I bought this product. I watched the youtube video before buying this product and found it to be a sound design. That is not what you’re buying! Great thought with a sound design.

Manufacturing? A complete piece of junk!. Yes, it looks like it did in the video, Not the same product and does not operate the same. My review is NOT a reflection on WalMart. This is the first product I purchased, from this site, which is getting returned.

We are very happy with this trap. It was a little hard to figure out how to set it. the door pushes back and up. Not explained in any of the pictures/directions. Once set, we were good to go. We have had the trap out for 4 days and have caught 2 skunks.

Twice the trap tripped on its own during the night — maybe have been the wind. or some animal bumped it. It has a pretty touchy trigger, but it works great! Very happy with the results, and we would recommend this trap.
