20 Best Gold Leaf Paint (2022 Updated)

The Gold paint is pretty fantastic! Beautiful color, great coverage, and high quality. Nice, sleek finish, and exccellent for those tiny details. Be aware though: If you want to seal your project, you have to seal it, and then apply the gold over the sealed coat.

Otherwise, if you apply the sealant very last, the gold will turn this blah, tarnished tone. But that’s because this is meant to be a finisher for details, etc. Because of this, I would not recommend this paint for any food-contact surfaces.

The Silver is truly horrible. I bought a second bottle after opening the first one, thinking that it was maybe a defective batch and not intended to be that thin and watery. Nope, second bottle from a different Michaels in my area and the same result.

Very glittery, but it doesn’t have the same sleek finish that the gold does. The oils in the paint pool along the surface and leave very unattractive splotches. It looks cheap, stinks to high heaven, and leaves me very unsatisfied with the end result.

I would rather apply 10 thin layers of silver acrylic because it would still dry faster and smell much less offensive than the silver gilding paint.

I previously used liquid silver leaf by Plaid. I couldn’t find any, but I saw this bottle in the same section, for a similar price, and with branding clearly meant to imply that it’s a comparable product.

So, desperate to finish my project, I bought it. Ever have those moments that, in hindsight, you remember in slow motion? That you mentally add a sad soundtrack and a voice shouting “Noooooo”? This product is pure disappointment in a small glass bottle.

It’s more like watery silver glitter suspended in oily fumes. The smell will knock you over, especially as you lean over the 5th coat (roughly 6 hours after the first, soul-crushing coat introduced you to disappointment) desperately hoping that this time it will dry looking like silver, not speckled oil.

Meanwhile, even painting outdoors (risking dust and grass in your work that will take five more coats to cover up) the fumes are so bad. I found myself holding my breath and vividly dreaming about removing my nasal cavity with pliers and sandpaper.

I wished I could close my eyes, but then I’d just spill sticky silver glitter over the whole project. At least if there was decent coverage I could pretend it was supposed to be solid silver, but no.

Just sticky, oily, and a bit glittery. I kept my eyes open, but then I had to see each disappointing stroke. In the interest of fairness, after 5 coats, it did finally look acceptably like silver. However.

Using it was an awful experience and the quality is sub-par. I’m throwing away the brush I used instead of cleaning it, just in case it was contaminated by contact with the paint and now thinks that’s the level of quality I expect from my tools.

If I was given a lifetime supply of this product, I would never use a bottle. I’d sell it, have a zero returns policy, and include a letter of sincere apology with every purchase.

I was hoping this could replace the discontinued silver paint from Liquid Leaf, but other than coming in an identical glass container, it’s nothing like it. This paint is so thin, almost like shiny water even though it isn’t water based.

I’ve used coat after coat, and it still isn’t covering, and it’s leaving so many brush strokes. Super disappointing. Definitely one to avoid.

The can was smaller than I expected but that only added on to how surprised I was when I bought it. It’s small but compact and it doesn’t take away from how beautiful the gold finish looks! I used it for a set of cabinet knobs and they turned out absolutely beautiful! It’s definitely worth the money.

The shade of gold is lovely, and the coverage is nice. I’ve used it on metal and wicker and it looks great on both. There’s enough for quite a few small projects. The sprayer is very functional and does not clog.

Overall a very nice option if you don’t need a ton of paint.

I love this little bottle. I just wanted to touch up a sign I had and didn’t need to spend a lot of money on a big can that was just going to sit. There is plenty of paint left, but I don’t feel like I wasted my money.

The color was spot on. It dried quickly. And I’m happy with my results.

I used this product on a clay sculpture and clay jewelry and it performed well and as expected. The only thing that would make it better is if you could clean it up with water. 😊

I needed to touch up an antique picture frame with “bronze disease.” This product worked beautifully

I have read all the reviews by verified users and I’m a little surprised. I bought Total Gold to use as coves on my Chaparral 2330 Bowrider. I applied this with a Binks Spray gun over Total Boat Primer.

The paint went on well and dried evenly. I allowed 7 days for the paint to dry completely and took the boat out for a day on the water. These are fresh water lakes and we had a great time until I put the boat on the trailer.

The Total Gold was water spotted and had dark stain marks that had to be sanded out. I would have been better off using a single stage polyurethane gold paint. The Jamestown Distributor paint advisor suggested I cover the Total Gold with their Halcyon Varnish and that worked well after extensive sanding to remove the stain marks in the paint.

I asked Jamestown Distributor management to look into other gold and silver paints.

Painted on my cove stripe about a week and a half ago. I used the gold paint to redo my cove stripe, pic attached. Came out very nice. I was very careful to make sure it was stirred thoroughly, and kept a stick in the can to stir with each paintbrush dip.

Also, using a high quality brush made a difference. The first day I was able to coat well on the port cove stripe with 2 coats. On the 2nd day I had an ok brush, but was not top quality like I used on the port side the first day, so the stbd side needed 3 coats for good coverage.

(I didn’t have the solvent to clean the brush after the 1st day, so had to use another one on the 2nd day. ) So far so good, looks very sharp. We’ll see how it holds up in the weather.

Although it is nice to have a one part gold paint to repaint the boat name, I found that this paint could use more gold flakes. I stirred it for a long time because when I first opened the can, the gold was a big lump on the bottom.

I then tried it on a test surface and it appeared to flow well and level beautifully, however each brush stroke showed when looked at from another angle, because there was insufficient gold in the amount of carrier/solvent.

A week or so later when I actually painted the boat name, I again stirred for a REALLY long time. The gold had again collected on the bottom, but not as solidly as before. Still, I could see that it might not cover in one coat because I could see the way the gold floated in the carrier.

This time, I used a larger brush size so that there would be fewer brush strokes to show. This was helpful, although one had to be very careful to stir the paint well *every time* the brush was dipped anew.

For the job, I dispensed a small amount into a cup and because the day was quite warm, the solvent started to evaporate a bit and the letters covered better as I went on. The first letters painted needed touching up with a second coat in places, the letters painted later after some solvent evaporated came out much better.

I cannot comment on the durability of the paint because this is the first time I have used it. From two feet away, the painted name looks great! It would have looked even better if I had been painting the name on with the boat on the hard instead of sitting in the dinghy tied alongside! 😉 12 inches away, you can see the problems one has with a slightly larger brush than desired at corners and points, but overall it came out well.

I recently hung 30 paintings for my holiday exhibition. In the process of getting ready for it I noticed that some of the gold on the older Illusion frames I was using had some dings in them. Because the gold next to the darkness of the recessed area was what was needed for the drama of that type of frame to work, creating a lot of interest for the painting itself, it was imperative that the frame looked its best.

That’s where the gold metallic rub paste did its work. It made the older frames look very close to the way they looked when I first bought them.

I was excited to make event awards with shiny chrome finish on new metal horse shoes. Ugh! I have grey / silver residue all over my office after bringing the dried product into the house to put finishing touches on the shoes.

The finish where painted and later (like 2 days later) touched is marred and ugly. I tried putting another coating on; and got the same result. This has been a terrible disappointment, costly, and waste of my time.

I now need to go find a “cure” in order to have these awards made in time for an event.

This is the best brand for spray painting wood furniture! I ended up buying a spray nozzle and worked like a charm. Ease of use, complete coverage, and brilliant color. Would definitely recommend using Krylon.

I used this Brush n Leaf to fix up a frame that had lots of scrapes on the surface and this product covered well (did not need a second coat and was not streaky) and it dried fairly quickly. Due to its highly combustible nature, this product needs to be used outdoors for proper ventilation.

I am very satisfied with the product and would definitely buy again!.

Seems to work O.K. I can’t make a valued judgment until my models have stood the test of time (or not) . It’s too early to comment properly

Santa bought this for my 4 year old son. He loves it! It was fairly easy to put together and seems very sturdy. The detail on it is brilliant. My only problem with it is the Papo knight figures are too big to fit through any of the door ways or to stand up in jail.

Overall though an excellent buy.

We bought this castle along with the trebuchet and prison cart for our son for Christmas and he absolutely loves it. The toys are very good quality. The castle was simple to put together and is very sturdy.

Our son already had several papo figures which go with it perfectly.

I like the gold and silver very much. The copper is pretty blah by comparison. It just looks like brown paint really. The same company makes Decocolor “Liquid Gold” and “Liquid Silver” without really letting you know the difference.

Which is: although they look very much alike on non-porous surfaces like glossy cardboard, only Decocolor Premium works on porous surfaces like multimedia drawing/painting paper. Liquid Gold/Silver will soak in and lose their sheen.

I use the Gold pen with the Chisel Tip on top of my acrylic paintings. Only requires 1 layer and is opaque, completely covering up any acrylic color underneath it. The paint flows thickly and smoothly out of the pen and the end result is a gorgeous, incredibly bright gold.

This is the best metallic paint pen I’ve come across. Superior to posca pens. It has a pretty strong odor, so use in a well ventilated area. I’m sharing a recent piece of work using the gold paint pen in places where I would normally apply metallic embossing powder.

I was pleasantly surprised by this marker. The paint itself is very opaque and has a great metallic shine. However, it does have an odor, so I would recommend using it in a well-ventilated area. It is also a chisel tip so you can get very thin or very thick lines.

I would love to get a bullet tip if they have it. I would highly recommend this for its gold shine—it is not dull at all.

I was actually very impressed that it came in a smaller container versus the normal large size. It was easy to use and I appreciated that the nozzle was constructed for fine spraying. Definitely doing an open area.

Suggest gloves if there’s any breeze that could blow it back on to you. Although it’s Christmas time at this moment my fingernails got sprayed green.

I tested it on a small votive cup and the coverage was phenomenal. The color was very rich and vibrant, just what I needed for my project. I cannot wait to purchase it in additional colors for other projects.

The painted had perfect adhesion to a wine glass I was painting as part of a centerpiece. It had a beautiful glow. The color is closer to a dark pink thank red. Keep that in mind when using this paint.

Beautiful metallic colors. Exactly what I was looking for. I create jewelry components using resin. These pens keep me from having to put my components in a metal bezel. Such a great look. These will last many years.

Just shake them till the little ball mixes the paint, then press GENTLY down on the tip. You can see the metallic paint soak into the tip. Press too hard and you get a great glop of paint in one spot.

Product’s tip is to first start on a piece of cardboard so you don’t ruin your project. I just knew I could trust Krylon for a great product. Will definitely buy again – if it ever runs out!.

Very good coverage, incredibly wonderful golden sheen, easy and great to use compared to using a metallic paint or similar item. It does sometimes get clogged but that’s to be expected with the kind of paint material it uses and it’s still more than worth it to use – and it even has instructions for how to unclog it on the packaging.

Definitely use it in a well ventilated area as it suggests – the smell is not terrible but it is noticeable and not fun to breath in after a while.

I have used this product and am learning a great deal. I am over 80 and my father and grandfather did gilding in London, They worked on frames for the galleries. I grew up around gilding but never learned how to do it.

It wasn’t for girls then. Now I am thrilled to be able to do it. The whole process with all the different metals is simplified and it is delightful. Thank you for opening this door for me. The only thing I would like is liquid adhesive and not spray only.

I had a painting that I felt would look better with a bit of leafing. I never did any leafing before but after watching a few YouTube videos I felt up to the challenge. This kit arrived promptly and in great condition and it was very easy to use.

I am looking forward to buying the silver from here as well. Tip for use: I laid my art on a rug for easy cleanup after I finished leafing because it definitely does get messy.

Ok I am addicted to this spray paint! I purchased this from Walmart to spray paint my kitchen napkin holder! And it looks luxurious! Than decided to paint my cabinet handles ! And let me tell you they loook stunning!!!!!! I can paint the entire house this colour now!.

i did buy this 3 times and needed to buy it again however for an unknown reason Walmart raised the price 3 times higher than i paid. its the color i am working on projects with and the only one i could afford.

If you haven’t tried Vallejo liquid paints, DO IT! The paint consistency is superb, the coverage great, and the price is fair. These metallics are the BEST on the planet! Remember to thin them ONLY with alcohol, water will “rust” the metallics in the jar.

This gold is amazing for DIY projects. I use it to add touches of glam on the raised points of mouldings and cormers. It’s thick and easy to control. Dries rather quickly but will need cure time like a wax product does.

Once dry, this stuff doesn’t budge. I have 4 colors which is nice when adding my own flowers mouldings onto a less decorated item that needs some drama. Then I can color in flowers or leaves but still make it transparent or opaque.

Cheaper locally however it’s always sold out. I’m willing to pay the extra to keep this product on hand. Good stuff!.

This paint performs with inconsistent performance. I am using it for airbrushing and it seems to flow perfectly for about ten seconds and then immediately just stops flowing. If I t adjust the airbrush pressure just a little it will flow again for about another ten seconds.

Very frustrating paint for using with airbrushing. And it does not help that the directions on the bottle are in French. The color looks beautiful when it does spray properly. It is about as thin as water.

But that does not account for way it does not have a consistent performance. When I clean my airbrush I use a thinner that is even more watery with no problem. It sprays through the air brush with a nice flow.

There is just something about this pain that makes it impossible to use with an airbrush.

Really pigmented liquid gold to paint the edges of your resin. Makes them look very professional.

Simple to use! Be careful since it’s very delicate. This was my first time using it (You can definitely use a gel medium instead of the expensive glue that they ask you to use if you have it lying around.

Its very hard to apply if you use mod podge, trust me. ).
