20 Best Golden Retriever Books (2022 Updated)

My daughter got the book and can not wait to share it with her friends when school starts back. There are so many wonderful lessons that all kids and adults can learn. Everything from accepting the differences of others to caring for those who at their end of life.

And to make it even more exciting for her and her brother ( who never gets excited about anything) they got to meet Tricycle and friends in real life. And all I got to say is these people are awesome for the love and caring they give these animals, even when they are given a very little chance of survival.

Full disclosure that I am the author. I would like to take this opportunity to let everyone know that our book is based on real life rescued animals. Tricycle is a three-legged true life Golden Retriever who resides at our rescued animal sanctuary Horse Creek Stable in the north Georgia mountains.

Tricycle and the other rescues in our book are therapy animals that are visited free by children and adults alike. Please enjoy his story.

We bought the original printing of this book for our granddaughter and she loves it. We were lucky enough to actually spend time with these wonderful people and their animal friends which are featured in this heartwarming true story.

The book teaches us that animals are not just pets, but partners in our life walk and a true blessing for those that take the time to care.

This was the first bait cast reel I have ever owned. With that said I was expecting some learning curve. After a few casts and following the settings it recommends in the user’s manual I am on my way to becoming a skilled bait cast user.

The real seems to be functioning fine. I would caution you that if you cast with you left hand it may be worth it to get a left handed reel so that you don’t have to swap hands after casting. I prefer this on my spinning reels that are easy to swap over, but the bait cast reels are not “swappable”!.

I bought it when I got.my puppy. Third lab I have owned. I have always been fair at training but this book filled in my gaps. Very helpful.

I really liked the easy to follow instructions and accompanying pictures, lots of pictures and the more pictures the better. I hope to have a retriever one day and want to know as much as possible about what it takes to turn out a great one.

Mr. Dokken’s book I believe could be used to accomplish that goal. My one concern was that he felt it necessary to use an E-collar.

Richard Wolters changed the bird dog training world forever with the publication of Gun Dog. This tome is still useful all this time later. Should be on every birders bookshelf.

I was so glad to find a copy of this book. I have a friend that has a pup and I highly recommend this book in order to train his dog. I have used it on two of my own and they were both great dogs and very easy to train with the instructions in the book.

I had loaned my copy out to someone years ago and never got it back. I bought a copy for myself and another for my friend with the new pup. Absolutely the best book I have ever seen with great results.

SHORT AND SWEET! BEST BOOK WRITTEN ON TRAINING A BRITTANY PUPPY (IF YOU WANT A WELL TRAINED DOG). I’VE HAD 5 BRITTANY’S IN THE LAST 30+ YEARS, USED THE BOOK (FAITHFULLY) AND IT WORKS! GOOD LUCK!

This book includes false talking points from the Labrador Retriever Club, an organization which once thoroughly investigated silver Labrador Retrievers, concluded that there was no reason to believe that they are not purebred, and then reversed its position not because of newer, better information, but because of pressure from LRC members who did not have silver puppies to sell.

First the LRC said silvers are purebred, now they say they are not, and they even got a veterinarian on their board to contradict genetic scientists by claiming Labradors do not even have the gene necessary to be silver.

Literally thousands of DNA tests all show that pedigreed AKC Labs are purebred, the LRC’s own multi-year investigation shows that they are purebred, thousands of DNA tests show they are not inbred, yet the authors of this book repeat the LRC’s new talking points that silvers are inbred cross-breeds and not purebred.

None of these talking points stands up to scrutiny. Why does this matter? Because it contributes to the bullying of silver Lab owners and the less-than-stellar car of silver Labs by some vets who buy into the unfounded prejudice.

I haven’t had a lab puppy in like 12 years. Hazel’s dad has never had a puppy. It was a great refresher for me. He has literally highlighted and dog eared sections on this book like it is a text book.

It doesn’t cover rescue/adopting enough in my opinion and can be overwhelming that’s why it got 4 not 5 stars.

The fear response stage?! I had no idea this was a thing but it explained why my pup all of a sudden wouldn’t walk down the stairs. This is an excellent stage by stage guidebook that addresses all of the essentials (potty training, feeding, socializing) as well as unique topics specific to monthly development.

Fantastic content with easy to follow instructions. Whether you are looking to train for Trick competition, or just have some fun with your dog, this is a must have book. I started the training with my 8 week old mini poodle, and through following the steps in this book he has mastered 2 tricks and is well on the way to polishing 3 more in just 10 days (in addition to all the basic rules and obedience training puppies need to learn).

The step by step instructions make it easy for him to understand what I want, and the pro tips and troubleshooting help me to get it right. I have recommended the book to my family, and they have used it with their adult dogs to keep them engaged.

Whether you are a complete novice, or an experienced dog trainer, this book is a must have resource.

Excellent book. Ideal for my really intelligent Bordoodle (Border Collie Poodle Cross) who expects lessons everyday. He was already doing some of the tricks by himself, like Peekaboo, so it was just a matter of naming it.

The book arrived promptly in spite of the travel restrictions of reduced airfreight because of Covid 19. Plenty of action photos, and clear instructions, this book is easy to follow. Recommended highly.

Theres trouble shooting and pro tips, plus little challenges to make the trick harder. It also goes through visual and verbal cues. Highly recommend this book.

If you have a dog that needs training, and more importantly, if YOU as an owner need to know how to properly train, GET THIS BOOK. I’ve watched the Lucky Dog show for a couple of years now and was always impressed with how this guy trains these wonderful dogs that some jerk through aside like trash.

His methods are humane, easy to follow and deliver results. We’ve always had dogs and recently adopted a sweet rescue puppy. It’d been many years since we’ve had a puppy in the house as our other dog is 12 and our 16 year old recently passed.

Because I’ve seen the respect and patience this man has and the results he gets, I thought I’d give this book a try and am so glad I did. If you have time and patience, this book will make life a lot less stressful for you and your dog.

If more people were responsible owners, took the time and had some patience to work with their dogs like this book teaches, a lot fewer would end up in shelters. Highly recommend.

Dog language is so different from human language. So many time we think and say one thing and the dog hears and thinks something completely different. When this happens we get flusterated because the dog does not follow our instructions and may even act in a behavior that makes up upset.

We do not know how to get our point across to the dog nor know how to stop the annoying behavior our dog has gotten go at. This book has your answers. These solutions work if we follow the instructions and are determined to follow through.

There is no need to feel flusterated when you have an answer. To be able to see what we are actually saying in dog language, no wonder the dog acted as he did. Well worth every dime!!!!.

This book is very thorough. He has great advice and many answers to questions a new puppy owner needs. My husband and I decided to get 2 Dobies and we were learning by trial and error. They are 4 months old now and we really don’t want to mess up, so we refer to the book often and have been taking them to training classes.

However, I really think the instructors have a copy of this book because I see similarities except Brandon explains the why of how we train the pups. He also tells stories of the many dogs he’s trained and how they react sometimes with amusing outcomes.

Try to catch his Lucky Dog TV series, worth a watch and you will get hooked.

this book has some cute tricks in it but the name is a little bit misleading. Some of the things in it are basic obedience commands and are not tricks at all, such as “come” that is not a trick, it is an obedience command.

Calling it a trick relegates the command to frivolity but in actuality it is a lifesaving command NEEDED for all puppies. Some of the “tricks” such as kisses can make some people feel disgusted at the idea of their dog licking their face.

All in all the book is well written and has some fun things in it, I just wish there weren’t basic commands listed as tricks.

the book covers basic commands such as sit stay leave it as well as advanced tricks such as opening and closing doors. it has a lot of pictures to explain the command with tips and troubleshooting. troubleshooting is an example of a common training challenge and how to resolve it.

i wasted money on group classes. my dog listens to me better with Kyra’s trainng style! you may find some unnecessary commands but that is ok.

While I would like to believe that my puppy is a genius, it is apparent that this book is amazing. Started training my puppy at 8 weeks. Would not have believed she could have learned these tricks so fast.

Great guide for the beginner. Start your puppy on the right track early. Well worth the money.

I have been reading Dean Koontz for many years. Yes, I’m old enough to have read his early books when they first came out. lol. I picked a copy of this up at the library and thought, “What the heck. it’s not his usual genre, but I’ll give it a try”.

Anyone who has read Koontz is familiar with Trixie. I felt like I knew her just from seeing her with him on the jackets of his books. Well, I didn’t expect to be wowed by this book. Yes, I love dogs, but I thought this would be another “aren’t dogs great?” books.

So not true. this book made me belly laugh out loud, and cry like I just put my own fur baby to sleep. You will grow to know and love Trixie as much as her papa did. Sappy? Not at all. Koontz knows how to draw you in.

you know this if you’ve read him. You won’t be sorry. Read this!.

Dean Koonz has always been my favorite author. I own every book he has written in hard cover, not one has ever disappointed me, and I anxiously await for his latest. This book I found to be my favorite, the great little insight into his private life/world, his true love Gerda who is his high school sweetheart, some of his childhood secrets I knew nothing about and Trixie.

Dear, sweet, loving Trixie, how I love seeing her name and picture in his books. Anyone who has ever had the JOY of unconditional love from a Dog is truly blessed. I could not put this book down, I laughed, I cried (happy & sad) and I will always remember him talking about the unbearable pain of losing a beloved part of the family.

On the importance of the human/Dog bond and on the reason why we give our hearts to them knowing what is to come, a character in his novel “The Darkest Evening Of The Year” says this; Dogs lives are short, too short, but you know that going in.

You know the pain is coming, you’re going to lose a Dog, and theres going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with them, never fail to share their joy or delight in their innocence, because you can’t support the illusion that a Dog can be your lifelong companion.

There’s such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware it comes with an unbearable price. Maybe loving dogs is a way we do penance for all the other illusions we allow ourselves and for the mistakes we make because of those illusions.

What a heartwarming book. I couldn’t put it down. You would love to know Dean Koontz,straightforward, honest, no baloney and fun. What a lucky bonding between man and dog. You love how he thinks from the dog’s perspective.

It was nice of Mr Koontz to give a us look into a writer’s life. Who ever thought a writer’s life would come with crazies. Yikes. Mr. Koontz is such a generous man. Can’t wait to hear adventures about Anna.

I picked up this book in a second hand shop because the premise seemed intriguing & it was a short read. WOW! I read it all in one night. The next day I told some of my coworkers of this & they too ran out to purchase the book.

Before too long many of my fellow associates had read this & we all agreed it was amazing. It truly was like you were seeing the world through this stray dogs eyes, from her point of view. It pulls at ones heart strings & I believe it will open peoples eyes to how humans deal with ‘strays’.

I bought this book for my 10 year old daughter but started reading it myself. Loved the gentle, beautiful storytelling, written with emotional intelligence and warmth. A wonderful book! My daughter loves the fact that it is a hardcover version of the book.

Would make for a lovely gift for a 9-12 year old.

My grandaughter’s favorite book. She is 14 now, and has read this book several times. She loves the story, as do I.

A trainer recommended this to me. This book is well written, cute and easy to follow but some of the tricks are now outdated. Stuff like picking up the phone and grabbing the newspaper don’t really apply anymore but they’re still cute tricks.

There’s other stuff like climbing a ladder that I’m afraid to teach my dog in case she starts doing it all over the place. Overall I’m maybe only going to work on 15 of these tricks but the book was still worth the buy.

My entire family loves Labs, but–as most people who own Labs know–this breed requires an iron hand in a velvet glove when it comes to training, whether you want a housepet or a hunting dog. I originally purchased this book new from a bookstore in 1965 and have used it to train every Lab puppy to cross my threshold since then (five in all).

The last Lab we owned came to live with us when she was 13 weeks old. She’d lived with a littermate until then, and had some habits (like excessive barking) I’d never encountered in my six-week old puppies.

Since she grew to be a very large Lab (90 pounds of solid muscle), it’s a good thing I had “Water Dog. ” Like most Labs, she was eager to please and within three weeks we’d cured the barking and she was obeying the commands: Sit, Stay, Come and Down.

She became a beloved housepet and was my youngest child’s most faithful companion for more than 12 years. Over the first six months, this wonderful Lab learned an impressive variety of commands, including “Wait, Hide, Seek, Back, Shake and Over.

” I credit “Water Dog” with creating such an absolute joy out of a Lab who could easily have become a problem dog. If you own a Lab (or any large breed, in my opinion), do yourself and the dog a favor and get your hands on this book.

When the Lab I mentioned above passed away two years ago. I still miss her. I loaned my original copy of the book to my married son who had just been gifted with a Lab puppy. I ordered this second copy for my son-in-law who also owns a puppy from the same litter.

If I ever own another Lab, I’ll buy another copy of Water Dog for my own use again.

I have used the book Water dog to train 4 labs. It is unbelievable how easy it is using this book. It really brings out their intelligence and their need to please. The book even has humor. I have also trained rottweilers and German shepherds using the methods in this book.

I bought this book years ago to train my first Lab and gave it to a youngster to have to train his dog. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has intentions on hunting your dog. It WORKS!!!

Not having read the author’s other dog-centered books nor seen the popular movies already out that are based on these novels, I thought it was about time to discover for myself what all the fuss was about.

As a person who has rarely lived longer than a few months at a time without a dog in my life, I was immediately drawn into the narrative which was told from the perspective of the main character–the dog! If you’ve ever wondered what your dog thought of some of the many things we as humans do you should read this.

If your heart is easily broken by humans who don’t place a high value on relationships & companionship, you might want to skip this read. However, there is an overarching story of love & loyalty that will give the intrepid a sweet reward.

Now maybe I’ll go see the movies!.

You have to be prepared to stretch your imagination and believe that a story told from a dog’s perspective will include being able understand their human owners when speaking. If that’s fine then be prepared for a self-absorbed mother who doesn’t watch her own child wherein the caring dog saves the child multiple times only to be punished and blamed.

Let’s just say it it’s not my taste and I feel no inclination to read a book where I’m going to get annoyed with one of the secondary characters throughout the book and for good reason. There are other ways to make the main dog character sympathetic and heroic.

I saw the movie first and loved it. However, like the first book, A Dog’s Purpose, the book and movie were different. I loved all of them!

I was looking forward to reading this, and was thoroughly disappointed. Luckily I only bought the e-version which is cheaper. it’s like a scientific paper written by vets for vets. Not an easy read, and I didn’t really learn much, other than dogs should be fed properly (ie raw), need a lot of exercise and supplements to live longer.

At least that’s what I think is the gist of it. I sometimes tuned out. The layout of the e-book doesn’t help either to keep the reader engaged. A bit frustrated too how they make raw feeding dogs out to be a complicated thing when it’s not.

I absolutely love the book it gives facts based from science and years for research it’s very easy to read and you don’t have to read it from start to finish you can easy got to end of each chapter and they give a summary/ takeaways from each character and it’s full of accurate information that will shock you and help your fur baby live the longest happiest healthy life possible I look forward to seeing more books like “The Forever Cat” and “The Forever Dog recipe Book” from these wonderful intelligent authors!!! please publish these other books soon !!!.

The story is simple and age-old. man meets dog and they live happily ever after. The circumstances of their meeting were unusual and pretty soon the world learned their story. The book is aimed for young adults but older adults (I’m a pensioner) will love the book too.

Gobi is the canine hero and is utterly delightful; Dion the human hero, is likeable and lives up to our hopes for a hero. The book is told at a good pace and is hard to put down. Really enjoyable and highly recommended.

I love this book because, it is like you are a person in the book. It is like a fiction book but it’s actually not. So over all I loved the book!!!

My grandson listens to every single word. It has become a favorite bedtime read as it was for my daughter, and myself. This book has been enjoyed for three generation in our family. I can hardly wait for him to begin reading it to me.

This is a thick book with several of the ORIGINAL stories in it. Fantastic way to read the old classics to your kids! This book is and looks amazing! The gold trim on the outer of the pages gives such an elegant touch. Having all 9 books together makes story time so much more convenient!

An absolute joy to find childhood memories in one book! A treat for all grandparents and great grand-parents to introduce their little ones to the Golden Books.

My husband loves this book, He always looks up the DVD’s in there to get an idea of how good the movie will be, what the story is about and who the actors are, as often on the DVD cover the writing is so small it is hard to read.

He had a 2010 book, so of course could not find out about all the newer movies, so he is thrilled with this newer one.

I love movies, and I don’t think anyone should live without the Videohound’s Golden Movie Retriever. Although I don’t think it’s necessary to buy the new one each time, it is published once a year and includes all the new releases from the previous year, in addition to practically every movie made in the U.

S. (and some foreign films, too)! This book rates movies according to “bones” (hence, the name. movie retriever, videohound). What it does is take an average of all the major critics’ ratings and rates each movie.

I’ve found it to be pretty on-target in my limited movie experience. (Pulp Fiction has four “bones”, while Showgirls gets a “Woof!”, i. e. , no “bones”. ) One great feature of the book is its categories index.

If you don’t remember the name of a movie or the actors in it, you can look up movies by their subject matter. There are also indicies for actors, Oscar winners, directors, and many more. This is a book any real movie buff can’t do without!.

This is a great book for movie lovers to own. I had the 2003 version, bought this one to update. Refer to it all the time. Has separate sections for movie titles, actors, directors etc.

If your a dog or animal lover, you’ll love this book. In fact, everyone should read it and learn something!!!

This is the second of two books by W. Bruce Cameron. The first, A Dog’s Purpose, leads the reader through a series of lives of the same dog. As one dog’s life ends he is immediately born into another dog’s body.

His breed changes as does his gender. The one unique aspect is that’d our dog remembers aspects from previous lives including smells. All the while the dog is learning from earliest moments of life the wonders about him.

From the trials of avoiding the dog catcher, the wonders learned from a highly enhanced sense of smell, his interaction with other dogs, to trying to figure what his purpose is. A Dog’s Journey leads our dog further toward his quest land culminates by the end of the book.

I have bought4 copies of each book and given them, in pairs, as gifts. These are two of my favorite “warm the heart” books.

This novel is the sequel to “A Dog’s Purpose,” and happily I had read that novel before reading this one, and pretty much knew what to expect. Here we have the further adventures of the canine who was the protagonist of the first book, except he’s now taking care of the step-granddaughter of the boy/man in the first book.

The story, told completely from the dog’s point of view and with the dog’s understanding of things, does include dialogue among the human characters so we have a good idea of what’s going on with them, as well.

This is the third doggie novel I have read by this author, and I highly recommend it to anyone who feels that dogs take care of us as much as we take care of THEM.

This is so sweet and incredible and heart-warming! Good for everyone. I almost cried a few times but it was worth the emotions. Such a great feel-good movie overall. I loved it.

It’s the first book I can ever recall ever reading from ‘cover to cover’. It is so inspirational and is helping me to prepare for the arrival and delivery of my GSD, next year. I’ll definitely be re-reading it at least once more, so I don’t miss anything! Can’t wait for their training book to arrive in the mail.

Awesome book with very insightful information on raising a dog. The training might not be for everyone as it encourages the use of “constricting” dog collars and physical/verbal training. Even if you are not interested in those techniques the philosophy behind the training and raising a dog is highly valuable and I would recommend this book to anyone getting a dog.
