20 Best Oil For Bicycle Chain (2022 Updated)

I’ve always grown up with WD-40 products in our household and we use it for anything and everything! When I had the chance to try their WD-40 BIKE® – All-Conditions Chain Lube, I was pretty excited! At first, I was thrown off by it’s small size but then I quickly realized that it’s actually perfect for spraying bicycle chains because it’s smaller it can get into the tight areas that larger cans can’t reach.

I like that they include their iconic spray extender on the can like their original product, it really helps to get in the spaces of the bike chains that can be hard to access. I used the WD-40 BIKE® – All-Conditions Chain Lube on my 6 year old sons bike, which he leaves out in the rain all the time! His chain is a little rusty and squeaky but this specific chain lube helped tremendously! I sprayed the product on very thoroughly and let it sit a few minutes and wiped it off then sprayed it again.

He was off to riding his bike with no loud squeaks and he says it’s a very smooth ride now. I’m actually very impressed by theWD-40 BIKE® – All-Conditions Chain Lube, I know that we will be making this a permanent tool in our house!.

I have been riding a long time, bicycles. road MTB and now gravel, and own, and have owned many chain-driven motorcycles over the decades. First, do not use MC chain lubricant on bicycle chains and vice versa.

They are engineered for different chains/RPMs/conditions. Second, I use “DRY” on my gravel bike, and it works just fine in all conditions. I also like to keep my chain and cassette/deraliuer spotless and lubed between rides.

I don’t clean/degrease and lube after every ride, but no more than 3 rides of 25-30kms and then its time. not for everyone, but I’m a little OCD when it comes to my maintaining bikes. I ride mostly on a mix of grushed gravel and packed dirt, and combinations thereof.

The fine crushed gravel will mess up your drive-train in a hurry if you don’t pay attention. Finaly, I am not sure of the reference of the “citronelle smell” or odour is, but I can’t smell anything from this product.

And I do not have any medical issues, so I guess some peoples noses are more sensitive than others. In summation, I would say for the price, you will get a lot of use if used as directed. It is all dependant on how often you ride, where you ride and how hard you ride.

This oil is so viscous its sticky. I found it difficult to remove the excess residue, and it picked up dirt like nothing I’ve used in the past. But my main concern is that I don’t believe it is getting inside the chain – to the rollers and pins (and maybe not between the overlapping surfaces of the inner and outer plates).

Its hard to imagine this product flowing into tight spaces. If you are mainly concerned with wear between outer surfaces of the chain and the chain ring teeth, this might be perfect. But I would need to see lab tests proving it gets inside before I would be content to continue using it.

(My 3 star rating for “effectiveness” is a guess. Correct answer is “I don’t know if it is effective”).

This is a must have for any serious home mechanic. This oil is unique, somewhere between grease and oil. It’s a super thick and sticky oil. It is really only suited for a handful of applications though.

It specializes for free hubs, brake cables, pedal bearings, clip-less pedal mechanisms, frame pivots and bearings, or any other metal-to-metal contact.

My 2oz bottle lasted me two seasons and I clean and relube my chain every two weeks. I also used this for other stuff so yea, 2oz goes a long way. 32oz should last me a while. About the lube, i’ve tried a bunch and for me (fair weather rider), this works well.

Keeps my chain super quiet and I only swapped by original Shimano chain recently that came with the bike and when I measured it, it was still in good condition. I actually kept it as a spare, later got a measuring tool only to find out it’s at 50% “use”.

Anyway, it’s a great lube. Dont use it in the rain or if you do, wipe down the grit and reapply.

This product is perfect for cleaning and lubing your chain. After every ride I wipe down my chain then add a drop of Prolink to each link. When I wipe off the excess lube it is black with the grime flushed from the inside of the chain links.

I usually get at least 2500 miles before my chain gauge shows enough wear to indicate it’s time change it. Since I use so much Prolink to keep my drive train in tiptop condition, I buy the largest container I can find.

I’ve used this in the past with good results. I stopped using it because I had tons of extra differential oil in the garage. I used that for awhile after watching FortNine’s positive review of the stuff.

It works fine, but it has far too much fling. It gets everywhere and is a pain to constantly clean. After I decided to stop using diff oil, I was determined to find the best chain lube on the market.

After seeing this product do so well I decided to return to it for off road riding.

Since 2010 I have been using this chain lube, first on my new chain which is still installed after 51k kms. I spray my chain approx every 500 to 600 kms. I dont wait as recommended at 800 or a 1000kms.

I own a street cruiser bike not a dirt bike which in comparison affects chain life substantialy in addition to riding style and technique. I attribute the long chain life mainly to this product as well to the quality of my x chain plus the fact I don’t hard accelerate from stop or at low speeds.

I do most of my spirted riding including moderate and sometimes heavy accelerating while in 4th or 5th gear. This factor helps considering my bikes 535lb mass is already in motion as opposed from still, or a dead stop then accelerating moderately or heavy up to speed.

This product is super clean and sets up to a waxy film within a few minutes up to 10 minutes, pending OAT. It sprays on nice without dripping not making a mess or waste, but is thin enough to penetrate the links and rollers before setup time to wax.

You will have the cleanest rim in comparison to any belt driven bike or another lubricating product. It stays on the chain ! It’s about the wax base lubricants that contributes to excellent lubrication and clinging to the chain with very little or no fly off.

And the best thing about it is you never need to clean your chain including wipping it down. There is no need, simply because this product is very clean and waxy and over time it cleans itself without buildup on the rim.

This of course no introduction of dust or road dirt. Having wrote the above if you get caught in the rain driving more then 50kms or so the priduct like most will wash off, hence the chain gets cleaned, but dont continue driving many kms in the rain as you don’t want an unlubricated chain !! Price point it has gone up considerably over the last few years, but if you are long term chain guy/girl I suggest buying two or three cans at one time, shopping of course for best price! In conclusion, no need to buy very expensive synethic based products which in most cases will perform the same as this product and some leave more dirt and buildup from flying off onto the rim.

I hope as long as I am a chain guy that I can keep buying Maxima ! !.

I have used Belray chain lube/wax for nearly 30 years with no complaints until I finally got a gold chain. I was using the Belray super clean and when I finally bought a gold chain it looked like a 2 year old with a box of white crayon’s went at it Everytime I cleaned and lubed the chain which kind of negates the whole reason we run gold chains(because they look better than black).

A friend of mine told me about the Maxima chain wax so I have it a shot and absolutely love it. It goes on a tan, brownish color and really wet like Belray so it soaks into the places you want the lube to be then it gets tacky after a few minutes when applied to a warm chain but after a couple hours it fully cures into a no fling almost dry lubed that nothing sticks to and just so happens to be gold in color.

The key to using this lube is warm your chain, spray or on and let it set up for a couple hours before you ride and you will be pleased with the results. This is not a spray and go lube unless you want it everywhere except the chain.

This has never been a problem for me as I always wash my bike and clean the chain before the next ride. It’s a very good lube for us track and off-road riders period. – -m-DIRT BIKE–.

Excellent product. First time we used it and husband LOVED the applicator! He was hesitate to try but said he was very happy with this.

No problem with product itself, but whwn it arrives in shipping box the lid was off the oil bottle and a good portion of oroducr had leacked all over inside of the box and all other items shipped with it.

Needed the product now so chose not to return and carefulky cleaned the other items that included food and medicine.

This applicator really does help keep the product from dripping all over your floor. I live in an apartment so not making a mess is key. This did the job and now my bike ride is nice and smooth.

Not sure why there are so many bad reviews. I’ve been an avid cyclist for a very long time, and I’ve tried a lot of lubes. This stuff is hands down the best lube I’ve ever tried. It has a great balance of not attracting dirt and longevity.

There may be better lubes for very wet conditions (but they’ll probably attract more dirt), but all things considered it performs well in the wet, and is, IMO, unparalleled in average dry cycling conditions.

As long as you are in normal conditions (no dust, dirt, and definitely no water) then this is a good lube. It does require somewhat regular applications, however. Washes off far to easily in wet conditions.

Its best attribute is that it is a VERY clean lube.

Excellent cleaner. Used this to clean my Masi road bike. The whole drive-train cleaned very well. I would still use the Finish Line dry lube after using this product. make sure you put something under the bike before applying this product.

Dirty liquid will be on the ground.

This stuff works great. Applying liberally, riding a few laps around a parking lot, and then wiping off the excess works wonders on keeping a drivetrain clean and well lubricated. In the winter I’ve been applying once every 5-7 rides, but I’m sure I could go way longer.

This ceramic wet lube is superb and actually functions as advertised. I have been loyal to and using the Finish Line Wet Ceramic Lube on my chains and other parts of my bikes for at least 15 years and the quality has remained consistent during this period.

The chemical properties make this lube very durable and over the years I have adhered to cleaning and lubing intervals of my chains every 200 to 250 miles with this lubricant. The high lubricity properties of this lube greatly help to reduce wear and extend the operational life of components where applied:chains,cables,pivot points,etc.

Before each application,I thoroughly clean the chain,wipe it dry then a drop of the ceramic wet lube is applied to each roller. After all rollers have been lubed I wait about 15 minutes for the solution to penetrate the spaces between the links and rollers then the excess lube is carefully wiped off.

I truly believe in this ceramic wet lube and I strongly recommend and urge fellow cyclist who have not used it, to give it a try;you will not be disappointed.

Appearance is often misleading and that couldn’t be more true in this lube. When I first got the lube I couldn’t believe that something this wet and runny could be a good chain lube. How wrong I was.

It’s quite difficult to put on due to its viscosity but after a while you get used to that to. I hate the lubes that send everything, including your chain, sticky black. Not with this lube. Chain is nice and clean, not black splashes everywhere and chain noise is well suppressed and gear change super smooth.

Reapplied after a couple of rides and seems to be holding up well. Ride about 70 miles a week and still the chain is quiet and shifting is slick.

Unlike that Lightening brand that leave rock hard deposits on chainrings, cogs, and pulleys. this stuff keeps your chain clean and shifting great with no hard deposits anywhere. Lasts a long time between applications in most conditions short of soaking wet.

Just like the not too dry and not too wet consistency about this Epic Ride. And the name is what I consider my rides to be, too. The roads here in upper New England can be wet or dusty, along the edge of the street.

Lots of gritty crap left over from snow plows and sand and salting. Needs a bit of scrubbing to get clean for a new coat. Use White Lightning Easy Clean Degreaser for that.

I have only used it once so far, but it did exactly what I wanted. The decreasing agent worked quickly and my drivetrain has been running smoothly for about a hundred miles since without any issues. No complaints here! #sweepstakes.

I’m glad I got this! I used it on my 10 yr old bike chain and now the chain glides easily over the gears. I had a tad of rust on the chain and I put it on thicker there and wiped over it, and some of the harder rust pieces did come off.

I feel you need to use this regularly for best results. I will use it every few months to be sure the chain glides smoother for a better ride. It’s easy to use! Just spray it on! I did wipe where it started to drip.

Overall I’m very pleased w/the results!.

I am a bit confused with the directions. It states to apply to a “clean chain”. The only time my chain was clean was when my bike was brand new! Do I need to clean the chain before applying? I don’t know.

It is the price I pay for being such a literal thinker. Anywho. Undaunted, I applied the solution to my “nearly clean” chain. And found that as I peddled, the ride was indeed smoother and quieter. Fewer squeaks.

One thing I really like is not having to use gease any more on my chain. I find it messy. This was very simple: take the top off, back-pedal, and squeese. Done.
