20 Best Oil For Harley Transmission (2022 Updated)

Transmission shifts smoother and quieter than HD Syn 3 oil I was using in transmission. Once I switched to Bel-Ray I have never looked back. I change out fluids every 4k miles and even the old dirty oil retains most of it’s red color.

The fact the fluid still appears clean/new shows me the friction on my gears is minimal when using this in my transmission. With 55k miles on the transmission it still shifts and runs smoothly. Also use Bel-Ray primary fluid.

Mobil 1 V Twin 20/50 synthetic keeps my engine protected traveling across the hot Mojave desert in the summer. Even the Harley dealers sell this stuff because it is so popular and it works.

Just drained it from my Harley 6 speed with 13000 mi. on the oil and it still had red color in it. Probably didn’t need a change yet. Makes it shift smoother too. Don’t recommend it for primary, not compatible with clutch.

First fo all, it’s an awesome colour, so if you have a window in your box, then it will look pretty. Most importantly, how does it perform? In short, perfectly. Silky smooth gear changes, and some superb friction modifiers that make the clutch bit very nicely indeed.

I am running a Barnett Scorpion clutch that was a little on the grabby side with not much to play with either end. This oil has really opened up the sweet spot and still locks as good as it ever did! Highly impressive oil, good price for the results, and well worth going for.

I was running Synthetic 3, but after a year of research and reading reviews about my brothers/sisters saying that their bikes were running cooler & having smoother shifting, I have decided to switch.

The season has not really started for me yet because good ole mother nature is being a *****, but i have had it out a few times and to be honest I can actually tell a difference. This is the oil that will remain in my bikes for the duration of my lifetime.

i have been using h. d, oils in my bikes for the last 30 years. read the spec’s on this. talked to someone that uses it and now im trying it. went the full change over doing engine transmission and primary.

500 miles is not enough to tell but so far i can’t complain. smooth running thru the gears, no noise and engine purring. another 2000 miles will tell all. my last bike a 2000 fat boy, it now has 95k with no engine work done to it.

change your oils, often. it’s the life blood of the machine. pay a little now or a lot later.

I bought my Harley Davidson ultra limited in 2018. Right off the showroom floor I noticed the hard-shifting and clunkyness typically associated with HD motorcycles. After switching to Amsoil after my first oil change, I could not believe how much smoother my transmission functioned! Don’t waste your money with other brands, just go by Amsoil.

I have been hearing and reading 5-star reviews. So much hype is just that. hype. I bought a quart for my ’09 Road King. Speechless. The whine is gone from the gear box. The loud “clack” from shifting is MUCH quieter.

The biggest improvement that I wanted to see is what improvement, if any, would there be in finding neutral. Unreal. I deliberately came to stops in 2nd and simply gave a soft press on the shifter. It slides into neutral EVERY time.

So smooth and so quiet, but right in, every time. Love it.

Been using Spectro oil products for over 35yrs. Used recommended Transmission oil for Harley, but switched from Harley Syn3 to the Spectro HD 6 Speed with noticeable reduction in transmission noise and smoother shifting.

I have made up my mind and will never use anything else!!!.

It says it gets rid of or drastically reduces gear clunk, and it does not, not even close. Way overpriced, it makes one feel like they took it in the shorts.

I’m a big fan of synthetic motor oils. If you look online on any of the forums you will see the topic debated infinitely on most all of them. In the past couple years I have started sending my used oil out for sampling and have safely extended the oil changes to 9k miles on my Cummins diesel using synthetic.

The extended intervals and sampling are still roughly the same cost as oil changes at 3k with conventional oil so the switch to this Red Line oil was a no brainer. The kit was nice and included more than enough fluids to do the 1k service on my 2018 Road glide.

The fuel treatment included was a nice bonus and I thought it was kind of usess for my application being that the bike was only 6 months old with 1k miles and kept in a heated garage over the winter, however I had noticed my bike backfire a couple times the last time I rode it despite filling it with fresh fuel.

The fuel treatment when added to that same tank of fuel eliminated the backfire I had been experiencing. I also observed noticably smoother shifting and finding neutral considerably easier than with the factory filled conventional oil.

Most often changing the fluids is just a mundane maintenance task that doesn’t make a difference. In this case, it was nice to be able to have a noticable difference. That difference makes me confident that this is above and beyond what the conventional fluids are capable of doing to protect my investment.

Very complete kit to do a 3 hole Harley oil change. The funnel is particularly useful for filling the chaincase/primary and transmission. Be careful, the primary fluid supplied is inadequate by 4 ounces to fill the system on my 103ci Tri Glide.

I just bought another quart separately and 32 / 4 = gives you enough for quite a number of changes. This is my 4th purchase of the kit, I hope they fix the shorting of the primary fluid at some point.

Ideal gearbox oil for classic two strokes road or race. Good for smooth clutch operation where it runs within oil bath and to provide positive gear selection.

Worked amazing on both my Grand Prix Honda 125 and 250cc Production Suzuki race machines.

Primary oil for my Harley. This is about the same cost as HD semi synthetic primary oil and their 20-50 engine oil. This is premium oil not made on low bid, rebranded, for the highest price. Most excellent on the wet clutch for smooth shifting and catching neutral.

I think the red line is a great product my motor seems quieter and it’s shifting which smoother and easier to find neutral I believe I will be sticking with this product from now on

Many people do not understand transmission oil especially for a 2 stroke. let me explain why this is your solution: 1. MOST dirtbike transmissions are WET CLUTCHES meaning the clutch sits in the same oil as the rest of your transmission.

you will need to find this out somehow. like i said most are. 2. You 100% can run 10w 40 four stroke MOTOR OIL in your transmission. sounds strange but its totally ok. the thing you need to be aware of is, IF IT SAYS IT IS, OR ISNT FOR A WET CLUTCH! some motor oils will say it right on the bottle, a good go to is ams oil full syn.

10w 40. usually readily available. 3. THIS PRODUCT solves all your problems, yes it says 80w, but transmission oil is scaled differntly then motor oil and 80w is actually very very close to 10w40 in weight.

this product works well, saves gears and clutches and is affordable and fairly easy to get ahold of. AGAIN BE SURE TO CHECK IF FOR WET CLUTCHES OR NOT. YES, this is ok to use in a rekluse auto clutch -m-2006 YAMAHA YZ125–.

Use this in my KTM 250SX. It is not synthetic oil. It’s a bit expensive for a non synthetic but I have used it for decades in my 2 strokes. Keep on top of maintenance schedules and you’ll be fine with this oil.

I switched to AMS oil 20w50 in my 2015 Harley Davidson FLHR because both types of OEM Oils, synthetic and petroleum based, wouldn’t hold up. After 3000-4000km of hiway use I’d be down 1/2-3/4 of a litre.

Bike had 25000km on it at the time. Proper break in. Leak down test proved engine was fine ect. The OEM oil just evaporated. I’ve used AMS Oil products on/off since 1979 so I gave it a try in my HD with immediate satisfaction.

I change oil between 8000-10000km depending on my season or trips and add nothing between changes. Maybe down 1-2 cups of oil. It stands up. I have 140,000km on now(spring of 2022). I’ve have some friends experience the same with their Harleys.

AMS Oil 10w40 is going in my Suzuki VStrom prior to my 12000km round trip to northern Alaska and back. Good stuff.

After using other products recommended for my Harley Davidson for years, I began to wonder if I was taking the best care of my bike that I could. I started looking at all the lubricants available, and what people were using, and why.

First of all, I don’t like having to have a few ounces of one lubricant in the primary, a few more of something else in the transmission, and then something else for the engine oil. Next, I read as many technical reports as I could find comparing different products, and I watched a number of videos displaying the wear results of different products.

Then I compared the price for different products. I came to the conclusion that Amsoil would be the best choice, in every regard, for me to use in my bike going forward: 1- Same lubricant in all three holes.

2 – Best wear protection available. 3 – Priced competitively. Those facts are in addition to me being able to receive a substantial discount by paying a small subscription fee. And I can get online, place my order, and have it here in a few days.

All that to say, Amsoil. you’re probably stuck with me as a customer for life!.

V Twin for primary and motor. Even after riding hard back and forth from Orlando to Sarasota and back to Orlando same day. Oil pressure stays stable also seems to be a bit quieter than harley oil. Also run 80/90 Synthetic gear oil in trans.

To me anything that has gear in it deserves dedicated gear oil especially in Florida. Shifts more consistent and quiater even after 300 miles than 20/50 motor oil. Your bike Your decision. My decision is amsoil.

I use this lubricant in my 117 s&s evolution engine in a 2005 big dog mastiff and it lowers engine temps dramatically among many other good things about it. Never run synthetic oil in a wet clutch system or it will start slipping and chattering.

I haven’t used it yet on this bike. but I used it for years. it is one of the best motor oil and transmission oils that they make. never had a problem with it. It makes the motor run cooler and makes the trans shift smoother Harley clunk into gear not with bel-ray.

Ordered a gallon of this for my fall oil change. The oil is fine, the only gripe I have is with the jug. On the side of most jugs there’s a clear line telling you how much is left in it, Bel Ray doesn’t have this.

That’s the only reason I gave this 4 stars.

Great deal when you can get this on sale. Switched to this from the Harley synthetic on a 750 v twin and transmission that share the same oil. Seems to run and shift smoother. Going to run this oil all the time moving forward.

I ride a 2013 FXDC and have always used Mobile 1 V Twin 20w-50. This oil is an excellent product but I have decided to try Mobile 1 Racing 0w-50 (not the 4T). The reason for this is all HD`s Twin Cam engines run independent from the clutch or transmission just like a automobile engine without the liquid cooling, so why not take advantage of the “friction modifiers” that are added to the Mobile 1 Racing oil but not present in the Mobile 1 V Twin oil.

The fact that you can run Mobile 1 V Twin 20w-50 in all three holes because you need some friction for the clutch to work properly has led me to try the Mobile1 Racing oil for my engine only. I still will be using the V Twin oil for the primary and transmission.

Air cooled Twin Cams run hot. These “friction modifiers” should help keep wear and tear down inside my engine better than oil without them. Please understand, I am not trying to start a debate here. All Mobile 1 products are of excellent quality and the only oil I will ever use.

This is just a personal choice that I have decided to make.
