20 Best Oil For Oil Change (2022 Updated)

I have a 2009 Saturn Sky Redline that recommends 5w-30 synthetic oil. After reviewing different brands of oil and determining Mobil 1 5w-30 annual protection met my engines requirements I decided this was the best choice.

These automobiles are unusual in that they have a 2. 0 liter motor with a dual scroll turbo and 20 psi boost that is much higher than most turbos. This engine will produce almost 300 horsepower and at the time of production this engine has the most horsepower per cubic feet of any engine at 2.

1 horsepower per cubic inch. I have driven this car in short trips in cold weather and on the highway aggressively at 120 mph or more. This engine has never consumed any noticeable oil no matter how I drive the car.

I work at a company that changes oil in cars and this is somewhat unusual and I note many of similar motors do consume more oil than I think they should. This oil does not break down with hard driving and it protects the turbo and engine under extreme conditions.

I highly recommend this oil. At my last oil change, the technicians who drained the used oil out of engine remarked about how good the old oil still looked and how pure the new oil looked going in. This engine makes extreme demands on oil but they are no challenge for Mobil oil annual protection.

It’s interesting reading the negative reviews, especially regarding how it is bad oil because it turned ‘black’ after only however many miles. Sure, if you’re over fifty years old, you might remember gauging oil condition by its color.

That’s because oil inferior additive packages and were paraffin based oils that allowed contamination to settle in the oil pan, which left oil “looking clean” longer, despite actually causing sludge buildup.

Today’s oils “hold” contaminants in the oil, which causes a darkening in color, however the protection of the oil remains. Oil is not “bad” until the oil is ‘saturated’ with contaminants. And the only way to determine the level of ‘saturation’ is via oil analysis.

Trust that Mobil has determined a safe mileage interval. I can only assume they wish to avoid lawsuits by suggesting harmful mileage intervals. Also, oil consumption is ‘normal’. Just read any owners manual.

Oil consumption doesn’t mark a fault of the oil. Higher mileage, previously infrequent oil changes, engine wear, vanish and sludge, carbon on piston rings, are just a few reasons oil consumption occurs.

Short trips, operating below normal engine temperatures, stop and go, hard driving, are operational causes. The molecular composition between oils can also cause differences in oil consumption characteristics.

None of this means the oil is bad. I use this and several other versions of Mobil 1 in my vehicles and the oil gets very very dark, especially as the miles rack up, however, my engines are clean internally and show no signs of wear (yes, I inspect several of my engines periodically; such as my stock Coyote 5.

0, 568hp LS3, 487hp Oldsmobile 350ci daily driver, ecotec 2. 0L) With many miles on the Coyote (frequently run at 5000-7000rpm, and Oldsmobile 350 (frequently run beyond 6,500rpm), neither show varnish, sludge, or wear after “extended*” intervals.

*extended is an inaccurate term. Modern oils simply have change intervals that are longer then previous oils.

Folks, first off any review claiming that this oil is not 100% synthetic base stock is lacking a lot of knowledge of base oil and refining process operations and knowledge of test methods for product certification using various forms of analytical chemistry techniques.

As a competitors employee, I run the synthetic base oil process engineering division and quality blending to meet the desired specifications for our synthetic oils finished product. This Mobile 1 Annual Protection, Mobile Advanced Protection, as well as the original Mobile 1 oils are created by a synthesis reaction process and yield a full synthetic base stock.

The Advanced version is a more refined version, and is self explanatory. In addition to the normal synthesis processing, the advanced goes through another series of refinery processing and separation equipment, which yields the “higher quality finished base stock” (you must prove this with American Petroleum Institute (API) test methodology) for all of the finished product quality specifications, for every single batch produced and released for customer shipment.

The analytical testing of the finished product is what determines the API specification. API test methods are simply operational and stability tests created by and used for comparing the quality of huge variety of oil products.

In short, most people have no idea how oils are produced, how they are tested, how the testing is performed and how/what they are certified for. – I will not say who I am, but only that I am a (Mobile competitor) who is a process engineering manager and finished product blender.

thats saying something. i also use mobil 1 in all my personal trucks, small engines, bikes everything! it hasnt let me down yet in fact when u tear somethin down after running mobil 1 its amazing how little wear there is ,metal against metal should just eat itself alive.

n not only does it not do that but u cant even tell they were mating surfaces half the time. the only thing i like more than mobil 1 oil is lucas oil stabilizer, that stuffs almost cheating its also a whole different class tho so no disrespect to mobil.

IšverstiShow in original languageI used this on my GM Performance Parts crate engine, & am about to use it in my wife’s new LS engine. This is a non synthetic SAE 10W30 oil. Works great for breaking in cams & for the initial engine break-in period.

For best results I switched over to royal purple full synthetic after the break-in just as its stated on the bottle. I highly recommend this for new engine break-in procedures.

IšverstiShow in original languageAnyone running a flat tappet cam must use oil fortified with zinc and other minerals that have been removed from oils over time to extend catalytic converter life. If you don’t, you will likely prematurely lose the cam.

Do your homework, Royal Purple is one of the few that has the right amount which has been tested and verified by independent labs not paid for by Royal Purple. The break in oil is also mineral based rather than synthetic like their other oils which aid the break in process.

IšverstiShow in original languageIt looks dirty going in but seems to clean well and lubes well. I believe I’ll switch after 500-5000 miles not sure when I will. Worked well for my break-in looks like good oil.

Think I’ll go to a cheaper 100% synthetic clear oil. I loved seeing how well it cleaned however think I’ll switch to cheaper clear oil and use the this more expensive oil now and then to keep things very clean.

I’ve always used Pennzoil in all my vehicles since the late 60’s and also in the vehicles I serviced in my foreign car repair service. Currently I restore old Dodge stepside pickups and always use them in my personal trucks.

These trucks mileage range 200K to 600k miles on the original engines. My only concern is the unavailability of straight 40 weight and straight 30 here in South Texas. That 5w, 10w etc may be good for those up north but NOT here in Texas.

When I was a teenager my Dad always used Pennzoil. We would change oil in the car in our driveway. When I turned 16 and got my own car, a 1973 Monte Carlo. Loved that car and my Dad told me we needed to change the oil.

When we went to get the oil he said it had to be Pennzoil. I ask why Pennzoil because all my friends used Valvoline motor oil. He said Pennzoil was the best and it would never fail me. That’s been 31 years ago and I still use it and my Dad was right it has never failed me.

This brand is top notch for your vehicle. It has a proprietary ingredient that elevated it’s performance above the others. It will properly lubricate your car, prevent the viscosity from changing to a disadvantageous thickness.

Cleans your engine. Works while you put your vehicle under stressful working conditions or if you are a daily driver. Helps engine to last much longer. It really works. If you haven’t been using it by now, start.

You will notice a difference. The price you pay for this is worth it down the road when you don’t get a CEL costing your hundreds, if not thousands. Helped my old 03 pilot get to 316650 miles with OEM tranny and engine, that’s a rare sight with that year.

My girlfriend at the time had a Hyundai Sonata and was long overdue for an oil change. This oil along with the ExxonMobil brand gasoline is the only motor oil/ gas that goes into the motor. As a result I’ve noticed slight gains in the maintenance time-frames; I’ve also seen a dramatic difference in how the motor idles and performs under high pressure and excessive use.

As a Dasher this is the only oil I trust to keep me in the race!.

I have a 16 year old car and I have been using this stuff to add and top off my engine oil, as it is normal for the Saturn S- Series engine to consume it. Pennzoil Gold is the only bottle that I have come across that states, in its label, that they use at least 50% synthetic oil.

I’ve tried Castrol SynBlend and it does not seem to be as good. High-mileage oil, I am still on the fence since I have heard it can cause old seals to swell and make things worse. However, with the Gold, my engine seems to run better and cleaner because of this oil.

I still like this dino blend, as opposed to a full Synthetic in my old car.

I have used Pennzoil Motor Oils ever since I started driving since 1979. I still have my first car 1969 Chevelle SS396. It has 194,000 miles on the 396 turbo-jet running nothing but Pennzoil. My 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.

3L gets nothing but Pennzoil. Thanks Pennzoil for making 100% Pure Pennsylvania Oils years ago, and now making the best Synthetic and Synthetic Blend Oils.

I have been using the Pennzoil Gold Synthetic Blend in my GM vehicles for years and it seems like it has been discontinued. Walmart and other stores seem to have pulled it from their shelves and I just bought the last 3 in stock online.

My GM vehicles recommend using a Dexos Synthetic Blend motor oil. I have choice this oil over other products because of the quality provided for the price.

I’ve been using Mobil Super 5000 motor oil in my 2013 Dodge Charger R/T Daytona since it’s very first oil change. Whether I’ve been driving in bumper to bumper traffic or blasting down the highway, when the engine oil is drained it looks clean.

That right there is evidence to me that this oil is effectively protecting against mechanical engine wear.

I was looking for an oil that performs well while still being affordable for our Jeep Commander we had purchased new in 2008. Mobil Super has more than fit the bill. With regular oil changes at 5000 mile intervals, our Jeep is still running like it is brand new – ten years later with over 125,000 miles now on the odometer!.

i’ve tried other oils for my truck 186000 mile,like hi mileage oils and such.With Mobile 5000 my comsumpion has when’t from 1 qt. every 1000-1500 to half a qt. every 3000. I buy a bunch on sale

Great reasonably prices synthetic oil brand for your car. Synthetic oil is great for your car but if you have a high mileage car, definitely look into quaker states high mileage synthetic formula which is around the same price maybe a few dollars more.

I love the consistency of the oil and can definitely tell the difference on how smooth ur engine and car runs on good synthetic oil. Again, I prefer high mileage synthetic oil because it seem like the oil is clearer and lighter on the car which usually is better as ur car gets older.

Good thing Quaker state also carries high mileage synthetic! I got a great discounted deal in store on this product but in general cheaper than the particular brand I buy. Take care of ur car and use synthetic blend and make sure you check ur caps which usually tell you what type of oil u should buy.

I use only full synthetic oil in my car since the beginning. It’s a 15 year old car, going strong still. I’ve realized that the benefits of full synthetic oil far outweighs the conventional oil. This product meets or exceeds the quality standards of any other full synthetic car oil in the market today.

So far since changing the oil in my car, I haven’t noticed any issues. As a matter of fact, after an oil change I usually feel that the car has suddenly gotten a boost, and it was a similar feeling with this oil change too.

Also worth mentioning, it was very easy to find this in store.

This one is their Premier Product in the MOBIL 1 engine oil line – you can be guaranteed it is great ! ! !I witnessed two BMW 318i vehicles run on Mobil 1 for over 1 million miles back during the 1990s and when the engines were torn down afterwards, the lubricated parts all appeared actually like brand new – still had the original machining marks ! ! ! Now that is great testament to a great engine oil ! ! !.

Been using 5W-30 Advanced Durability conventional oil in my supercharged Buick Park Avenue for 25k miles since owning the car. Not one single problem and the oil runs quiet and smooth. No matter if it’s 100 degrees above or below zero in the dead of winter, car starts and runs smoothly every time! What’s better is QS oil is priced a lot cheaper than the rest and works just as good! I expect to get several more thousand miles out of this car and engine before it gets traded in for something else.

I plan to keep on using QS for the foreseeable future! Have to try some in my lawnmower and snowblower as well. Use this oil with confidence, your engine will love it!.

Starting from the beginning. I own a 1997 Chevy Camaro. I just had the engine replaced about 1 month ago. Drove 500 miles and changed oil with Castrol GTX. After 600 miles my engine developed a loud chatter.

This engine has a roller cam and I should hear some noise but louder than usual. I came to the conclusion that this oil sucks. Changed oil again today with 10w30 Advanced durability Quaker state and what an impressive result! Very quiet and smoother operation.

Ok, just an update today. I changed oil today at 3000 miles with Quaker state Advanced durability 10w/30 in my 1997 Camaro. Engine is running even smoother now. Truly unbelievable. I must’ve have gotten rid of that Castrol once and for all that was in the lifters and bearings.

Great oil at a great price.

I use this oil in all my vehicles. It is certainly my choice over the rest and I don’t trust any other brand as much as I trust Mobil 1. Being synthetic, even in high and low operating temperatures, this oil performs amazingly by providing a constant viscosity(thickness) that provides lubrication and protection.

A conventional oils viscosity changes are influenced by the temperatures greatly and in in turn does not provide the protection that Synthetic does because the thickness and lubricating properties of the oil constantly changes.

Synthetic Mobil 1 provides that constant protection I need for my vehicles. There’s a reason why Chevrolet dealerships choose Mobil 1 synthetic for their Stingray Corvettes!!! I use the high mileage because the additional additives help keep my engine clean and running smoothly in my high mileage vehicles!!.

We got another Chevy Express, this time with the V6 and 140,000 miles. Intake gasket dumped coolant in the oil at 168,000 miles, driven about 40 miles, severe chocolate pudding. When you see temp start going up slightly and oil pressure going up at the same time.

pull over and check your oil if it’s a GM with this design. Changed filter & oil at home, cranked it up and listened to lifters rattle for 3 minutes(full of coolant & oil pudding) until it quieted, drove it to the shop for the gasket fix.

Changed oil and filter again after the repair. It now has 247,000+ miles on it and going fine. Thanks M1 !!!.

I love Mobil 1 because they actually stand behind their product. Mobil 1 is used in racecars and is holding up so why wouldn’t you use it in your engine. This is a great motor oil for John Deere tractors.

My tractor is liquid cooled and i wanted to keep the engine even cooler by using Mobil 1 Extended Performance. If you put your finger in the oil and then roll it in between your fingers you can tell a difference than with conventional oil.

It made my smoke problem that i had in my tractor go away. That is a good plus. It has about 366 hours on it and i thought this would be a good time to switch. The other good thing is that it runs very quiet and at idle the rpm’s are faster than with the oil i had in before.

This is way better than John Deere oil by a long shot. This is a good combination with a Purolator Purone filter. My tractor uses a PL14476 and it fit perfectly. I was amazed. Thanks for the great product Mobil 1!.

I have a kia sorrento 2012 and I decided use mobile 1 oil ( it requires 5w-20). after about 2000 miles it started to show me the engine light with P0014 code. In the beginning showed it rarely and still took that of buy it self.

I take it in different shops but they couldn’t find what it was. And by the end of 5000 miles of the oil it kept the engine light on all the time. I got worried because it looked as a big problem that no one can find what it was and everyone was “experimenting” with what it might have been.

He after 5100 miles I changed the oil of the car and this time I tried Castrol. The car hasn’t done the problem even once after 3000 miles with the new oil. I even googled if there is a known problem about that but I couldn’t find it, BUT what I found was that a lot of people that had the P0014 code had used Mobile 1 oil.

Very disappointed especially when you know how much you have spent to find out what was wrong with you car but that actually was just a bed and expensive oil. Never again Mobil 1 products.

Mobil 1 Synthetic is the only oil I have ever used in my motorcycles. Being that the same oil lubricates not only the engine but the clutch and transmission also, this primo quality product gives me peace of mind.

I’ve never had an engine, transmission, or clutch issue in any of my bikes that have exclusively run on this oil. 68,000 trouble free miles later, they run like new. The only thing that has worn out are the tires.

I use it in my 2011 Ford Fusion also (in a different viscosity), and that engine has 131,000 on it, doesn’t burn any detectable amount of oil, and doesn’t even make it very dirty at the 10,000 mile change intervals I do.

In this car the camshafts are visible through the oil filler cap and they have no visible deposits or sludge on them. Nothing. Well worth the extra money in my view. I don’t see ever using another brand.

Use it in my boat as marine engines run full load all the time. When cruising, that means 60-80% throttle, and occasionally 100% – something you’ll never find in a car over time. I change it annually, way before its time, just because the boat is stored for 6 months.

While 70% less plastic sounds like a great idea, the devil is in the details. It’s basically a flimsy bag full of oil contained within a flimsy cardboard container. The cap on the bag did not line up correctly with the cutout in the top, causing me to spill nearly two of the six quarts.

It’s also very difficult to measure how much oil remains in the box/bag. Great idea, but terrible execution. The engineers need to spend a bit more time on the packaging design. I won’t be buying this again.

My pickup takes 6 qts of oil. In the past I had to buy a 5 qt jug and a separate qt to change my oil. Now I can buy one container and be done. It also saves on waste because the oil is inside of a bladder inside the box.
