20 Best Oil Furnaces Consumer Reports (2022 Updated)

Replacing an ol 95 percenter with this unit to avoid dampness in the basement, chat help was great and recommended a unit I can install by myself with just some ducting modifications. Got the unit faster than I can get parts for my car! Arrived in perfect shape and should have in installed in a while.

I will probably work faster when it gets cold! Also thank you for sending all the technical information to help me get things up and running when I finally get around to the install.

I installed this furnace myself. I am not a professional, but I have done electrical wiring, and gas connections. Alpinehomeair has an excellent YouTube on plenum transitions, using their kit which helped tremendously.

One of their techs helped me clarify the wiring as I was working with an existing thermostat and A/C. He was able to quickly ascertain my type of equipment and my experience level and I had it wired while we were on the phone.

This 80,000 btu furnace really cranks, and has significant more heat output than the 100,000 btu system it replaced.

I would have given 5 stars, but because the warranty is void if its not installed by a licensed professional i gave it 4 stars, so if you are a do it yourselfer keep this in mind. The warranty is not for people who want to save a buck or , like me, are afraid that someone might bring covid into your home while installing your furnace.

I would also add that if you don’t have any experience with this kind of installation or a knowledgeable helper best to let a pro do it. So far the furnace works flawlessly and no issues.

This item does work as intended. I have an issue with the tongs, since they aren’t the right type to hold the crucible and pour. The firebrick cracked with the first use, so that could’ve been better.

The insulation in the lid falls off every time I open the lid, but that’s not that major an issue. more a simple annoyance. Buy better gloves, guys. these transfer heat straight through and will burn the bugger out of you.

I’m leaving 4 stars because the item works tremendously well. Replace the tongs with a decent set that can be used to hold the crucible properly to pour (they’re not hard to make) and replace the gloves and you’ll be good to go.

My Vevor Smelter arrived super quick and was well packaged, no chance of getting damaged. It was easy to assemble and everything fitted together perfectly. I fired it up and made a small gold brick no problems.

I have bought other items from Vevor and they have all been quality made professional equipment and at a reasonable price. Glad I found them!!.

Crucible size is perfect for good copper pour, and less gas is required to melt it. Even though the brass pieces don’t match my country, it comes with a large hose and teflon tape so it takes 2 minutes to connect.

Although there were a few wrinkles (oops) with this furnace purchase I still rate it with 5-stars as the few wrinkles were simple, understandable, and not Alpine’s fault. First was the instruction manual oops as there was no manual anywhere on or in the unit but one call to Alpine and I was emailed the manual within 5-minutes.

The second was the stand as my installation requirements could not use the factory stand so I had one built for less than the factory stand. The third was the biggest oops because I wired it wrong and did not observe proper input polarity by reversing the black (hot) and white (neutral) wires [MY BAD!].

Alpine is to be commended here as their customer service went above and beyond as we troubleshot the malfunction (the heat section would not start or run) over the phone. Then finally I needed help connecting the Thermostat and found it was simple with the help of Alpine over the phone.

Overall it has been an excellent purchase, install, and satisfaction with a quality appliance in my home.

Home heating use. Noise level is a bit ‘louder’ than anticipated. Installation was not very difficult and Goodman instructions provided were very beneficial. Alpine’s information websites are helpful and their online chat and available contacts appreciated, though I did not need much interaction.

Reviews are very questionable!! I feel ‘product reviews’ should have 1+ year follow-ups, to provide for comments after a proper amount of time and use of an item.

It is reliable regardless some negative comment from many installers. I have installed a number of different Goodman furnaces and they are all working well without any problem. The oldest one has worked for 20 years with little maintenance after 10 year.

Many installers do not recommend Goodman brand regarding its reliability, but I do not see such issue. The reality is it is inexpensive so installers cannot charge more money due to part and labor ratio.

For self installation, thinking about following factors: You can get Goodman furnaces below $600, where installer recommended brands are usually twice expensive as or more than Goodman brand. It is low cost for practice.

Current model of new furnaces are simple and only have three major components: blower, control valve and electronic control board. The first two are relatively reliable and electronic control board is very inexpensive (~ $50).

The installers charge at least $4K-$5K (may find $3K+ in some area) for the whole package. Once you have a new furnace installed (total cost will less than $1K for Goodman, $3K less than installer), replacing it only takes a hour or two if space is tighten.

The furnace will work for 25+ to 40 years. In the worst cases, say the furnace completely dies average 10 years, saved $3K will let you replace new one for 5 times ($600 each thus total 60 years), and you always have a new furnace.

Sounds good?.

This was the second 96% efficient Goodman unit I have purchased (previously purchased an 80k unit for my workshop from Alpine Home Air). Both units have been 100% trusty and reliable. The install was easy because the 120k BTU unit I had previously had existing ductwork that made it easy to take out the old one and install the Goodman.

I only had to add some right angle pieces to the bottom vent in order for the new Goodman Unit to sit on it. Once everything was plugged in and double checked, there were simply no issues whatsoever with my Goodman furnace (has been 5 months now).

Would definitely buy again and would definitely go with Alpine Home Air for this unit. Local contractors quoted $4000-$6000 a few years ago to replace my home unit. Furthermore, I have been saving significantly on gas with this much more efficient unit, which means I can turn up the warmth a few more degrees and still pay less on my gas bill!!!.

Bought a Goodman furnace in 11/2019 March of 2020 the circuit board relay and sensor died out. Not under warranty. Then In March 2021 same thing happened again. Now yesterday March 9, 2022 same damn malfunction.

My HVAC guy was out of town , called 2 other companies for a repair …… the parts are ON BACK ORDER !!! I had it , I had a new furnace installed today. It’s 25 degrees out , I live in Chicago , am I supposed to wait in this weather for a back ordered part??? The company that installed my new furnace “CARRIER” explained that Goodman is garbage and cheap and you will always have issues.

In fact they won’t even sell them. This furnace wasn’t even 3 years old and couldn’t make it a year without breaking down. Horrible product , save yourself and refuse to buy one. Oh and the HVAC person that installed it won’t even attempt to give me a refund or answer my calls after I told him I’m getting a new furnace.

Replaced a Twenty year old hvac system. Goodman was the only product my installer offered. My teeny year old system ran better then the new Goodman system. Plastic evaporate pan. which they did a recallOn.

It did not send a pan to replace the plastic one that has caused fires. Instead they sent wires an module to be connected to the blower. Plastic still in furnace and they refuse to send a metal pan. Although they have sent it out to some people which was stated in a comment on their Facebook page.

As soon as I can this inferior system is out of my house before it causes a fire.

I am an engineer and I spent probably 40 hours reviewing all types of heaters and furnaces to heat my 2 story 1700 sq. foot house in E. Montana where the temps are routinely -25 to -35F for weeks at a time in the winter.

This old house had a wood stove and electric baseboard (expensive heating, and poor). Settled on this Rinnai EX38 propane model even though I felt the cost was excessive. Installation was exceptionally easy though I wasn’t able to use the wood stove 6″ vent and had to cut a 3″ hole through the wall with some tough masonry board and stucco.

It’s been online now for 6 days and I am very impressed. I used an infrared pyrometer to monitor temps throughout the house. The unit is installed in the 24×15 foot living room and it warms this room (too much) on lowest setting of 60.

At same time it warms the adjoining BR, bath and kitchen while increasing the upstairs temp by 4-5F on this setting. Unit has two great features: economy and setback. They talk about the economy setting but nobody mentiones the setback feature which I feel is the best feature of all.

One of my criteria was finding something that could prevent freezing when we are gone for weeks or months at a time since we travel a lot. The setback feature allows you to set a temp (minimum of 38F) with the furnace off by just selecting the setback button.

The furnace will remain off until the room temp reaches that temperature and then it will ignite the burner to prevent temp from going lower. Temp outside now is 9 degrees so I have used this feature for a couple of days and am impressed though I set it at 46F and it actually comes on when the room is 48-49.

I feel this product is worth the extra cost plus, based on my experience, German and Japenese products (and some American if they are made here) are the best. I hate buying anything new because most of the time they’re poorly made and don’t last or you have all sorts of trouble from the gitgo.

Not with this Rinnai furnace.

I bought this to replace an old Empire unit that had the same vent type and dimensions. It was packaged and shipped well- not a dent in the box. The furnace guy installed it in less than 2 hours without issue.

The pilot light is quiet but it is really loud when it heats. sound like a wind tunnel. People have commented it is a calming sound albeit loud lol. It heats really well- quickly. It has my 1000 sq ft home in about 10 minutes and the cover does get hot.

Since my heater is on a slightly higher level, I can see right inside the unit. The grill has larger square openings and I did prefer the look of the other cover. I would use that if I knew it would be safe, but with the heat output I think I’ll stick with the cover it came with.

Also, the power went out a few days after the installation and I WAS able to use it, which is very comforting in the area I live, as the power goes out a lot during the winter. The best features are the heat output and not needing electric.

The heater is absolutely perfect! I have a 1000 sq for cottage and it heats the entire place. The only downside, it was damaged on one corner inside the box

We have several Williams Monterey Furnance’s in our apartment complex and really like them. So when we needed a new furnace we did not hesitate to order another Williams Monterey. The tenant loves it and says it keeps her apartment nice and warm.

We have not had any problems with it at all.

I purchased this for the 1500 square foot home I built in Northern California 10 years ago. When I say “”I built”” I mean me as owner-builder and a team of two carpenters and a laborer, meaning I was the one who hoisted it into the attic, installed it and the plenum and trained my laborer to do the duct work.

It failed only once – solved by a new igniter around 2 years ago. Other than that, no problems at all. None.

Very simple to wire up. No issues at all with the operation fired up instantly. Good heat output. Good cooling output also.

So far it’s been in about 2 weeks. It cools the same or maybe a little faster than my older Trane unit, but is actually smaller measurement wise, not by tons. I’d say the outside condenser is actually really, really quiet in comparison to my old one and my next door neighbor’s who has another brand only a couple of years old.

Disclaimer to know is that the air handler has a little bit of a rattle to it, that makes it kind of louder. I’m sure something could be insulated somewhere in it to stop that, but i haven’t been able to find anything so far that is loose.

Also, it’s a good idea, if you get it installed, to order or go buy a filter kit for it, that has just a little flap door. That’s what i did and it made a huge difference to change them out when i need to.

Other than that if you get the whole system shipped to your house, make sure to check it before you sign off on it and i find that you want it shipped by someone like ups or fedex. The only problem i had was the air handler coil being a little bit twisted, due to material and packaging, but was easy to bend back.

By the way air handler coil is aluminum and not copper, so it should last a lot longer without leaks. Also, outside condenser is a scroll compressor, the same as higher end units. Get a professional to put it in, and go to the Goodman website afterwards and all you need is the person’s business info.

and the model numbers for all the units to enter the warranties for them all. It’s easier if you take pictures or write them down, before you install them. Other than that, the price is right, and I saved probably 1500 to 2000, based off the comparisons i was getting.

While some insist that only certain brands in the HVAC market can be considered quality. I will point out that no manufacturer of a cabinet makes their own gas valve, inducer motor,, control board, or blower motor that I am aware of.

Goodman does a great job with their heat exchanger design, cabinet design and overall compactness of their unit. Inside you will find Honeywell or white rogers gas valves (just like the competition), GE or emerson inducer and blower motors (just like the competition), and GE or emerson electronic control boards (just like the competition).

All in all they have done well assembling a solid product that is dependable and reliable. I’ve been installing for 20 years and have never filed a warranty claim.

I am a retired industrial maintenance engineer and installed myself. You can’t just rip out old equipment and install furnace without the ability to set up new furnace for proper operation. Proper air flow static fan pressure, gas pressure and cfm adjustments must be observed.

I’m running with two stage Lux thermostat and the month of December my gas bill is half of last year!.

I decide to replace the furnace myself, I have the whole Summer to do it and I will take my time. I read the Installation Instruction myself made measurements to a cramp closet and ordered the furnace.

It was delivered in the time I was told they will show up. The Young driver was helpful. after unpacking the unit I looked it over good and ordered all the accessories I required from Alpine. I replaced the Unit, replaced the vents(PVC) and installed the condensate drains per Instructions.

The Unit runs the first time I tried with one exception, I did not expect the haze in the air which I immediately evacuated using my Swamp Cooler. Everything runs perfect after that.

All in all this unit will pay for itself in short notice. With the upgrade ECM, I have increased my frequency of fan only calls from 15mins/ hour to 30 minutes/hour just to improve airflow and circulation within my existing home.

Some things to note when you are doing testing, I noticed that the unit initially calls for a 2nd stage heat process and then settles into a single stage burn for the long term unless it cannot keep up.

This concerned me at first as the temperature difference was only 1 degree so didn’t understand why the unit called for the 2nd stage of heat. Just keep looking and it will revert back to the single stage.

I used a much larger media cabinet for my furnace to sit on to help improve CFM airflow and reduce filter changes. If you are like me and looking for a way to increase the overall height to match your old 35-year-old furnace, this is a great way to ad 14″” in height, and improve flow.

The only trouble I had during startup of the unit was one of the small pressure hoses within the blower motor was kinked from the factory (or maybe I bumped it?). There was a tight 90-degree elbow and with the square tubing turning that sharp caused a crease.

I was getting an E2 pressure sensor code, so double and triple checked everything. Eventually found this very slightly kinked hose and rerouted it. no more issues. All in all the hardest thing about this job is running new PCV exhaust/vent lines if you have an older furnace that used stainless steel venting, and then any duct transitioning.

Ductwork is not easy and can consume time!! Also, always update your gas line if possible. My gas valve turn tab was literally broken off so I went ahead and purchased new heavy duty lockable valve and new 5/8″” gas line kit with safety valve.

Most furnaces at this price point use thinner sheet metal and skimp a bit here and there to reduce production costs. That being said this Goodman uses name brand components and is really well manufactured.

Time will tell how it holds up, but I’m confident this was a good choice. The ECM motor and 2 stage gas valve are working quite nicely and it’s so quiet in the basement. I had to call my hvac buddy a few times as the install instructions weren’t always crystal clear, however, this was my first solo install.

I am not happy with the lack of manufacturers warranty with self installed units, I did call a local company to perform a start up; checking the gas pressure and temperature rise and they commented on how good the install was compared to some of the professional installers even.

Alpine Air was really good through the whole process and I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Arrived boxed up box in perfect condition after opening box furnace has some minor dents in sheet metal, makes me think that these are factory seconds. Dents were noting I couldn’t live with so I installed the furnace.

I had to change plenum sizes which was some what of a challenge, also had to run combustion air intake and exhaust was somewhat of a challenge as old furnace was 80% and this is 96%. The Tech support line was very knowledgeable and helpful.

Do be aware I was unable to get any local heating/cooling contractors to help before or after the project. On that same note those same contractors wanted to sale and install a furnace that was of less value than the one I installed for half the cost of theirs.

This will also effect your factory warranty. It did take me about three to four days to complete, and I did not really work long hard days on it either maybe 8 hour days with lots of brakes.

The furnace arrived when promised. It was very easy to install because I removed my old Williams furnace, which I installed over 40 years ago, and it slid right into place. I think I got my value out of the old heater.

Overall my experience with your company was a very positive one. If my needs include any products that your company sells, I would be very happy to do business with you again. The only downside to the product was that when I fired it up it filled the house with a very bad odor, smelled like burning plastic or something such.

I have used the furnace for several days and while the smell diminishes each day, it is still present.

Good solution for an older commercial rental building we own. Heats well and is reliable we installed our first Williams Direct Vent heater over twenty years ago. This new one still had the same dimensions and I could utilize the same opening in the wall for the direct vent.

Nice when certain products stay the same and don’t try and reinvent the wheel. The first one was easy to operate, efficient, and kept the building nice and warm when needed–the 2nd seems to be doing the same as well.

I have one that was in use for about 3 years or so. The heat exchanger developed a large crack due to the intense heat of the flame each time it kicks on. If your unit makes a whooshing sound when it comes on, take off the cover and look for a crack on the heat exchanger where the flame is located.

I recommend turning the flame setting down as well as turning the pilot flame down to a minimum. These steps will make the heat exchanger last longer.

This is an excellent product and a welcome addition to our 800 sq ft. camp. After a cold arrival, and turning up the thermostat 20, the camp is warmed up within an hour. Did I mention theres very little insulation in it? The unit fit neatly between 16 inch, on center studs, and included the chimney that exhausts right out the wall, and also intakes cold air from the outside to eliminate drawing heat from the living space.

The furnace has very little intrusion into the living space. Sure beats the old rectangular model that used to set in the center of the room! Good riddance!My only negative comments are it doesnt have a provision for an air filter, and makes a some irritating cracking metal expansion noise as it warms up, and contraction noise as it cools down.

This is the second one I purchased. I use it in my family room. I use it for extra comfort. I had my first one for at least ten years, although I had one minor problem with it, I feel it was a better one.

The fan went out along with the switch, I felt it was not worth getting it repaired, so I purchased this one. The only issue I have with this furnace is the thermostat that was suggested with this furnace.

I must adjust the thermostat manually when the temperature of the room changes. Sometimes it will automatically turn on but the temperature has to fall extremely. I live in Missouri and temperature in the winter becomes extremely cold.

Another issue is this furnace is extremely noisy but overall it is a good product.

We replaced a propane wall furnace in our 900 sf cabin with this electric model. Width wise it fit perfectly. Running wire and adjusting panel was no issue. Installing was relatively easy the only criticism is the electrical housing area is very small and a female’s hand can barely work around the wires to connect the thick gauge wires providing power to this unit.

The unit powered up just fine and works well with our nest thermostat. It is much quieter than our previous wall furnace and being located in the common area that is a bonus. I’ll be interested in seeing how this affects the power bill.

Bought one year ago. Self installed with a propane conversion kit. Had Hvac company do initial startup. Everything operated perfectly and continues to operate perfectly. I installed this in a 4,000 sqf home and it heats it nicely, even here in western pa where temps can get down to sub zero.

Would highly recommend to anyone.

I ordered a gas furnace with included A coil and filter cabinet and a propane conversion kit directly from your order desk. He told me it takes 24x24x1 filters,,,,,fine. I received a bent up rendition of a basic non coil gas furnace cabinet and no propane kit.

I followed the installation instructions to the letter. I hooked this up to my existing HVAC and cold air return. I did absolutely EVERYTHING as per instructions. I could not figure out why the hot air was NOT reaching any rooms, even the kitchen which is in the next room, less than 15 feet away.

I decided to feel whether any air was coming into the vents at all. There is next to nothing. To do this, I unhooked the duct from the furnace, to see how strong the airflow actually was. I bought this to replace a much smaller wood furnace.

Let me tell you. That much smaller wood furnace, which was rated for about 1,000 sq ft, blew hot air into all the rooms in my house. When I run my oil furnace, the same thing happens. Lots of hot air goes throughout my entire house, even to the second floor.

This furnace is a total waste of money. I wish I had not bought it at all!.

Ash grate is the size of one fire brick. Too air tight. Fan to supply air to fire box seems to make no difference and because the fire burns so low after two weeks we had to clean creosote out of stove pipe.

Still in the process of setting mine up, but helped a friend set theirs up and it was a piece of cake. Nice stove and works well in my 2000 sf pole barn only slightly insulated

Opened sealed with plastic wrap , air conditioner carrdboard , found furnace cover on floor , totally stripped of wiring , circuit board , emailed explained condition , called , girl saysafter explained everything they are evaluating the situation , I explained to overnite the missing parts and whatever I don’t see missing , she said they would call me , that was early , have not received any call , old furnace removed so have no blower for air conditioning for this handicap apartment Sorry I didn’t refuse shipment.

Very good deal on a new furnace. You can’t beat the price and so far seems to run great. Our old furnace broke down and the price to fix it, was going to cost a little over what this cost. It needed two parts.

Luckily my husband went to school to install them so he was able to do it himself, which saved as a bundle. I couldn’t believe we were able to purchase a whole new furnace for a little under the price of two parts for an old warn out furnace that sense we bought the house we had to have it worked on every year.

As Landlords, we are repeat buyers for Ingram’s. Over the years we have bought several. They’ve all been good furnaces and the customer service on the phone was excellent. They are very nice and cooperative.

We will buy from them again when we need another furnace.

Unit delivered today, 7-3-2018, skid was no longer under it, side panel bottom and bottom panel dented in. Looks like it may have been dropped, driver noted on shipper damage. I wasn’t planning on install for 2 months but afraid there might be other damage inside unit.
