20 Best Oils For Mosquito Repellent (2022 Updated)

We live in the woods and take long hikes with our small (low to the ground/tick attracting) dog Bandit twice a day. The mosquitos are awful; the ticks are worse. We’ve tried quite a few natural flea/tick/mosquito repellents over the decades and this product is the best for repelling mosquitos and ticks.

We’ve been using it twice a day on ourselves and Bandit’s harness and collar for about 2 months. He is protected with a once-a-month topical, so we do not apply this repellent directly on him. It really works and Bandit doesn’t mind the “scent” nearly as much as other products we’ve tried.

Having gone through about a dozen bottles so far, it’s important to note one unfortunate downside to this product – the spray pump leaks at the pump head, locks up in the unlocked position, and inconsistently delivers repellent unless the bottle remains upright.

To avoid that frustration, we transfer the product into a spray bottle we bought solely for the purpose of dispensing the repellent. Pump hiccups aside, it is an excellent product and we will continue to use it in our never-ending battle with bloodsuckers.

We have a couple of natural insect repellents that we try (we live on a ranch, in the mountains, in the rain forest and there are a ton of mosquitos. ) This one actually makes a difference in the amount of mosquito bites I get.

When I lightly spray this on myself before going outside, I end up with one or two bites. If I forget to spray this on myself, I end up with more than 10 bites. (I’m one of those people that gets completely devoured and then I end up with huge, allergic welts.

) So, in my opinion, that means this stuff works. The smell is extremely strong- almost like strong alcohol, and my whole family coughs and chokes on the smell when we spray in in close quarters. But, we just spray and walk outside right away to prevent breathing in the lingering particles.

I wish this would be back in stock soon because our bottle is running low.

I love Murphy’s Naturals Lemon mosquito repellent spray. I have shared with many friends who ask where they can buy it, saying their repellent does not work. Just as a test, I will watch mosquitos come close to me, hover a bit and fly off.

and, I must mention the salve! I love it too. great for the bed side table when you hear that little buzzing in the dark. I rub the salve on my ears, my hairline, on the sides of my neck, and behind my upper arms.

and murphy’s smells so good too. Mosquitos have been really bad this year. I am very happy to have my supply of spray, salve and incense stick!! thanks Murphy’s!.

As someone who attracts mosquitoes like a magnet attracts iron filings, having an effective mosquito repellent is a must for me. I hate using harsh, toxic chemicals like Deet or Picaridin, as they irritate my sensitive skin.

I’ve tried several all-natural repellents, but this is far and away the best I’ve found! I’ve been using it for more than three weeks and have only gotten three bites–which is amazing, considering my job requires me to be outside in shorts at dusk four nights a week.

As long as you shake it vigorously before applying, it goes on light and has an absolutely wonderful scent–my co-workers tell me it smells just like birthday cake (and they’re right!) It hasn’t stained my clothing either.

I also love that I can buy it in a large, 8-ounce bottle, because I go through a lot of it. You do need to re-apply it frequently, but that’s par for the course with any natural insect repellent. Trust me: this one is a winner!.

I’m always a bit skeptical of all-natural insect repellents. I hike and need something reliable to minimize the chance of tick bites. This is one of the best natural repellents I’ve found. So far, it’s proven effective against mosquitos and ticks, and it smells amazing- sort of vanilla-ish, not like a bug spray at all!.

This is by far THE WORST repellent I have ever used. Sprayed some on before going on a walk with my dog and OMG mosquitos were all over me! I was better off without a repellent than with this! I hate off spray because it feels tacky and sticky, I was really hoping this would work but it is a NO GO! Will return and NEVER buy again!!!!.

This product is one of the best I have used in my life. It really works! I got it for my mosquito bites and it stopped the itch very quickly!

I had some older repellent that worked okay. But my new batch works extremely well. With the recent mosquito plague of no see ‘ems this product is a must.

This is our second order. Not Oily and dries fast…and it keeps the bugs at bay. My husband sprays it on and goes out to mow the lawn…

This is a nice smelling candle with essential oils. It is a nice idea. It didn’t work for me. Perhaps because it was a breezy day that the power was gone and eventually it blew out the candle. It didn’t bother the cats.

There were several mosquitoes flying right by me so I brought the candle right by me but the mosquitoes stayed flying in front of me even with the candle right underneath them. Well I don’t think those landed on me but when I was still in the perimeter of the candle one mosquito landed on me.

Perhaps it would work better if the wind wasn’t blowing and I had lots and lots of candles in an enclosed area.

We live in South Florida and mosquitoes are a nuisance when outdoors. We purchased two of these repellent candles in hopes of a new defense. Lit both candles on our patio, went indoors to cook dinner.

Not only did the candles burn out (dispute the advertised “burns up to 40 hours”) but each had a dead bumblebee in the melted wax! We certainly are not interested in killing bees, found this reality very disheartening.

Lemongrass, I learned afterwards, actually attracts bees.

I cannot say enough good things about this mosquito repellent. We can now enjoy our outside patio into the late evening hours. And while sitting outdoors, and our doggies want to go in and out, these candles provide protection for the inside as well when we prop our patio door open.

I realize this is a mosquito repellent but we have noticed we now do not have the June bugs and moths either that we had been having. Interesting. I love it and will not be able to be without it.

The smell of this product is just so bad that it will stay will you for days. The mosquitoes were basically laughing as the they continued to bite everywhere I sprayed. After the 10th bite I decided to spray the mosquitoes themselves and they literally flew right through the mist and bit me again.

DO NOT BUY the stink juice. Make sure you have something with DEET in it. I have officially learned my lesson.

Found this while shopping and saw the ingredients especially the lemongrass and peppermint oils knew the work for mosquitoes, I’m hooked this stuff works I’ll be stalking up on this! My kids are allergic to the deet in the other products I’m so glad this works we are ready for the summer outings.

The smell of this smells really good not over powering.

Got my bottle today and so far they are staying away from us would for sure buy again!! And LOVE being able to spray my puppy with it he always gets bit and so far they are leaving him alone

I bought this product to hopefully prevent mosquito bites on my dogs, rather than using heartworm medication – my dogs are Australian shepherds and I refuse to poison them with heartworm products when I don’t live in an area with a huge mosquito problem.

I have personally had an issue with a non-ivermectin based heartworm drug, supposedly safe for the collie breeds, that cost me over $1000 in vet bills. So, I tried this stuff and it does repel. It comes out in a very fine mist.

I sprayed it on my hand, then wiped it on my dogs’ faces, then lightly misted their bodies. My one dog hated the smell and did her best to rub it off in the dirt and grass. The other one didn’t care.

I would have rated this a 5, except for the smell that bothered the one dog. Otherwise, I do think it works. I sprayed it on myself too and the mosquitos left me alone.

I have a 10 pds Cavachon (Cavalier Spaniel/Bichon). I keep her hair short. When We take her for 1-hour walk every day, she loves to role herself on her back on the grass. She is 8 YO and for the first time last year she started getting fleas.

She wore an all natural product collar and I also sprayed her with an all natural product both from Dr. Mercola. These did not work last year. I started her on VB Natural Mosquito Repellent and that did not work either.

What does work is the VB shampoo to kill the mosquitoes. That product is good. I do need to leave the shampoo on for about 10 minutes. Actually, it doesn’t kill them per say but it does knock them out so I can pick them out and throw them in the toilet.

Unfortunately, I am going to have to start using some chemical collar that repels the mosquitoes and ticks. I did not have any problems with ticks last season though.

Vet’s Best Mosquito Repellent has a really strong lemony aroma that some people might find overpowering, but I find pleasant. The intensity of the aroma does seem to dissipate quickly, as the product dries.

Mosquito season is almost over in my area, so I didn’t have a chance to test the efficacy of this product on my beagle & cats. I live in southern Michigan in a wetland area, & mosquitos are a real nuisance during the summer months.

I will test this product thoroughly next summer (2020), and update my review with the results. I did apply the repellent to my beagle and several indoor cats to see how they tolerated the strong aroma.

The dog was indifferent to the smell, and was happy to receive a treat for his cooperation. He has skin allergies, but didn’t seem to have a reaction to applying the product to his fur or skin. The cats were very curious about the aroma, & really wanted to sniff it.

I spritzed the product on my hands & rubbed it into their fur, since my guys are spooked by sprays, even quiet pump sprays. They didn’t try to run away when I applied it, & sat around sniffing each other.

No allergic reactions from the cats either. I hope that the 2 strays that have moved into the feral cat shelters on my property will allow me to apply this product on them. All of my resident cats are treated monthly with Revolution for fleas, ticks, & heart worm, but that product does nothing to protect them from mosquito bites.

The outside cats really need some help during peak season!.

Went to an outdoor event and was warned that the flies were biting. To no avail, everything was tried prior to my arrival. Luckily, I had packed my No Natz. It worked!!! Everyone wanted to use it. You’ll smell like furniture polish, but it’s worth the smell.

I ordered more to give to the host.

Does exactly what it says! It works! It keeps gnats away! Smells so so so strong though!

First squirts streamed out, then it changed to mist. Haven’t used it enough to check it’s effectiveness.

when dealing with an infestation of insects of any kind, it truly wears on one’s sanity. I dealt with spiders & fleas. Your product combined with D. E. rid my home of fleas. This is the 1st time in more than 30+ years there’s not been a flea problem here.

(The home I have, is my childhood vacation spot with my grandfather. Though I LOVED visiting him, I hated the fleas loved it too. I was their long lost love! REALLY!! I got attacked shortly after arriving an went home each visit with multiple bites.

Not as much as I should, but it’s so breezy here, often. I have found myself wearing it more than the shrubbery. At least I know after being dosed, insect life find me non appealing. Kudo’s for me! I like it, though, when I can get it on the ground.

It saves my horticulture from insect meals. : ).

Love the ease and effectiveness of the flea and tick yard and garden spray. It hooks up easily to hose,smells and works great. My dogs love to lay in the grass. and occasionally will eat it when they have stomach issues.

I just can’t see using anything that is toxic knowing this. Have recommended it to friends and family. I also use the Home and Garden Insect Control for ants both inside and outside the home. Again, safe, smells great and works without dangerous pesticides on home surfaces and garden.

OH! and I LOVE the exfoliating soap for me! Especially after a long day at work and in the garden. Removes the sweat and grime and leaves skin feeling wonderful! Long time and future customer! : D.

When I visited my little place in SC and sat on the front porch, my ankles were ate up with fleas within seconds. I quickly grabbed the hose, attached the Wondercide dispenser and sprayed the entire front porch – over, under and around.

When I went back to check it out 2 hours later, there was not even one flea. Honestly, I didn’t expect it to work that well! I have 5 dogs and we’ve had quite a flea problem this year (we’ve used Advantage, Advantix and Frontline, all with no success), so I’ve also been putting a few tablespoons in the mop water and using it to mop all the floors.

It doesn’t work as dramatically as it did outside because the dogs keep picking up more fleas on our walks, and the fleas lay eggs and on and on, but slowly we’ve had much fewer and the place smells great! It’s also gentle and safe enough to mix with water and spray the carpets and furniture even.

I found this on clearance for $1 so why not. The first thing I notice is the scent smells just like a citronella candle. I shook it well then sprayed some on myself first. It does not come out as a mist but as one blob wherever you choose to spray so it needs to be rubbed in.

One squirt covered most of my leg so a little will go a long way. My reason for removing 1 star is because I find it to be super greasy. So much that’s like I put oil on – skin shiny and all. Anyway, I tried this on myself, my 4 year old and my youngest and it does seem to keep the bugs away.

Especially those pesky gnats. It claims to be natural and serves its purpose so overall I’m happy with it.

I used this all summer long on myself & my son! We are O- blood so the chiggers & mosquitos love us! And being in rural Missouri doesn’t help! It’s made out of natural oils, no deet, and doesn’t smell terribly gross like other bug repellents! It also doesn’t leave u sticky like other repellents! 10/10 highly recommend! I like to cut back on unnecessary toxins as much as possible, so this is one of the very few products I will actually use on my child without worry!.

Myself and my baby had a terrible allergic reaction using this. Our skin lit up with hives. Worse reaction than getting bug bites. Immediately needed to wash off. I am not allergic to essential oils usually but perhaps the concentrated quantity was too much for my body.

Be careful using this as too much essential oils can still be toxic. Perhaps test on your baby or child’s skin in one area before applying everywhere. Never had a reaction to the DEET kind of mosquito repellent :/.

We live in an area of TN with lots and lots of ticks—our backyard is full of Lone Star ticks in particular. Every time we’d go outside (our two little girls included), we’d end up with them crawling up us even when taking all precautions (and having our yard treated with Lemongrass Oil).

Since using this spray, no more ticks! Except in the off instance someone forgets—my husband forgot to spray himself before going outside yesterday and found two ticks on himself this morning. More proof of how amazing this repellent is!.

I have been using this spray for some time now – every day on my walk through our maritime forest. We have mosquitoes, no-see-ums, ticks, horseflies, black flies, bottle flies, deer flies, horse flies and – well, you get the picture.

I carry this bottle (pocket-sized!) and spray my hat, neck, arms and legs and it keeps the bugs away. The buzzing flies buzz off! It has a pleasant smell and no harsh chemicals and in fact, I am ordering a boatload more for this summer.

It doesn’t stain clothing or linger forever. In short, it just works, period!.

After spraying the numbers of bugs definitely went down, and the smell was great. After spraying the second time I had no bites, nor any bugs bothering. Then it rained, and rained, and rained. Some of the little blood suckers are back after days of rain, but I believe the reduction is effective, and I will be ordering more, in a larger quantity, for extended use.

Lots of mosquitos here in Tennessee and sprayed this all over the balcony. Needed a safe solution as my cat frequents this spot and the best part is it smells great. Definitely effective.

I like this mixture because it allows me to mix up a spray bottle with water and drops from only one bottle of essential oil, instead of using multiple ones for a natural bug deterrent. This is ant and spider season here in NE Arizona plus we live amongst the Ponderosa Pines and the bugs love this environment! I’ve mixed up several 8-ounce bottles and sprayed around all the windows and doorways.

I have noticed less spider webs on our deck and no spiders inside since I sprayed. YAY! It works!.

I used the neat blend to make our natural bug spray and it works great! I used the recipe I found on RMs website. The bugs here are awful, we’re very close to the Dismal Swamp so we have tons of mosquitoes, deer flies and yellow flies, which seems to be immune to everything! Works great for the mosquitoes but we do have to reapply frequently to keep the deer and yellow flies away.

I don’t think most people have to deal with them so this neat bottle should work great under more normal conditions ?? I will definitely purchase again when I need more.

I have been using essential oil insect and tick repellents for about a year — absolutely required in the Hudson Valley. They generally all work, but the scent is usually not very good I guess the specific mixes work great but don’t blend well for the nose.

This one works great AND has a delicious smell thanks to the vanilla.

So glad to have found a natural insect repellent that actually works AND smells good without being oily. So often the smell is worse than deet and leaves me greasy. Worked great in the Midwest against mosquitoes and gnats.

Lavender is my favorite essential oil, however some give me a headache. This one is great and smells amazing! I will purchase again. I love it.

I wanted an essential oil to fragrance my hand gel. I decided on geranium as its one of my favourite flower fragrances. I added about 10 drops to a 500ml bottle of hand sanitizer. My hands now smell lovely and when my sister came and used it she asked me where I bought the lovely sanitizer.

I will be buying again.

I’ve been buying essential oils as gifts for family members as they are so versatile, and these ones are my favourite so far. The scent is strong and they are reasonably priced. I ordered for home delivery and they came very fast.

I received this Skeeter Hawk Bug Repelling Carabiner Clip for free to test out. I live in the South and I’ve ALWAYS gotten ate alive by mosquitoes. They love my blood so much. If I go outside for even a minute I will get bit by one unless I’m wearing bug spray.

Since I go outside every morning I figured this would be a great thing to use without having that nasty bug spray smell on me every day. It was super easy to put on and I love the clip option. Everything was super convenient to use, but it did not work! I instantly got ate by mosquitoes and had at least 5 bites after being outside for about 10 minutes.

I was wearing pants and a T-shirt, so I figured that would help more. Nope. Did not work. I’m definitely disappointed because I wanted something that would make my life a little easier. Overall, I would not recommend this product if you have a problem with mosquitoes.

Maybe my blood is just too sweet and they don’t care about this repellent.

I received this wearable mosquito repellant band free of charge in exchange for me review and feedback. I was skeptical at first, but I have worn it while gardening, outside after recent heavy rains and while my kids’ outdoor sports practices and games.

Each time I’ve worn it, it has done its job! I’m often overwhelmed my aerosol insect repellents, but the citronella oil tabs used with this bracelet are mild in scent, and are very effective in keeping mosquitoes off of and away from me.

It’s easy to wear and has an adjustable, Velcro band, so it can be worn by kids and adults. Highly recommended for anyone who spends time outside, gardens, etc.

I was gifted the Skeeter Hawk Bug Repelling Carabiner in exchange for an honest review of the product. I was skeptical about this product at first, because it seemed like a gimmick, but I was actually quite impressed with the effectiveness.

I used the carabiner on a few different occasions. I used it a couple times while walking around in my front yard, and it did a great job at repelling mosquitoes, however, it didn’t work as well when I used it during a hike in a dense forest with an abundance of mosquitoes.

So, I would recommend it for areas where the mosquito population isn’t so extreme. All-in-all I’m pretty impressed with it and I would recommend it to others.
