20 Best Outdoor Rat Bait Stations (2022 Updated)

As fall has approached and the farmers are taking down the crops the field mice seem to love to scurry into nearby houses. As the weather drops we seem to see them around more even with getting a cat.

I am absolutely terrified of the things so getting somthing to help was a need. Having 2 dogs and 1 cat we couldn’t do the sticky traps or the set ones as the animals would set them off. We also did not want to use poison and risk that alone.

So here we are looking for more options and I see this. This is very easy to set up and we have caught 2 so far. I would like to say this has been the best trap used for us. It actually works. I like how this has the poison inside and protected so nothing else will get ahold of it.

The window is a nice addition so you can see if the bait has been messed with at all and needs refilled. Look forward to it helping out home this year and not having the pesky problem.

I always have rodent traps set in my barn. Until now, I had to be careful not to accidentally step on or set off the conventional rodent traps that snap shut. With this new Tomcat Rat and Mouse Killer Refillable Station, I don’t have to worry about that.

The refillable station also has a window right above the bait so I can see if there is any activity at the bait or if the bait needs changed. With the conventional snap traps, the kill is instant and the rodent can be removed before it decomposes.

With the Refillable Station, it is possible for the rodent to eat the bait, crawl into an inaccessible spot, die and decompose without the opportunity to remove it. All the while having to put up with the smell.

Having said all that, I am going to stick with the Refillable Station because I think it is far more convenient.

We got this bait station to use in the crawlspace of our new mountain cabin. It is starting to get colder so no doubt the rats and mice will make their way into the crawlspace to warm up and nest in the insulation.

Because we won’t always be at the cabin to unload them, we didn’t want to use the spring loaded kill-traps since they have to be unloaded before another rat or mouse can be killed. This bait station is very easy to load and while not a problem at the moment, I like that it’s child and pet proof.

As advertised, the see-through window makes it easy to monitor the amount of bait left in the station. The bait station is guaranteed to kill rats and mice; however, because the station doesn’t actually trap them inside, they eat the bait and go off to die elsewhere.

So, unless you actually see the carcasses, you are left to trust the poisonous bait is doing its job.

I guess everyone has seen the outdoor bait boxes by Tomcat to thin the herd or nuisance rodents. I don’t know about you, but I will never display such traps at my home, so I have gone so far as incorporate structures to hide them amongst flower pots and the like.

I live in the country amid many acres of corn, so rodents are an issue and I don’t want them coming home to my house, certainly, and also my sheds, and I’d rather them not be roosting elsewhere in my yard and garden.

Invariably then will and have found a way indoors when it’s rainy and cold. The Tomcat Rockscape Bait Station uses the same tried and true mouse and rat irresistable feed as the bait, but houses it insige a virtually tamper-proof plastic rock that looks like it belongs amid other rocks ornately or functionly placed around the lawn and garden.

Rodents are very rare inside guests anymore. I know they are visiting the bait stations because I need to replace the bait every other month or so. I also think the ground moles and voles also take the bait, because their tunneling is under control.

I recommend the Tomcat Rockscape Bait Station as your mainline defence against invasive rodents that do property damage and will invariably try to cozy-up in your comfortable home.

Bought 3 packages, sat them on counter & went to family house to eat. come home & rats already chewed into one bag & took all the poison out of it, there was no sign of the poison anywhere. so, I left closed bags on counter & next day another bag was chewed up & poison was gone with no signs of it anywhere.

I know we still have rats, because they are still roaming the house. We have spent over $300. 00 in rat bait, & rat traps, still they. re everywhere. Never had an issue with these rodents till neighbors cleaned the junk out of their yard! I don’t know what more we can do to get these rodents out of my life.

I am not saying the product did not work, just saying they are for sure eating it, but we haven’t found any dead.

I thought the blocked worked decent. It was easy to setup and did get quite a few mice in it at first but then the mice decided that the block wasn’t better than my home in the end. Right when it started getting a bit chilly outside.

The product looked and for the most part worked like the big boxes that come from an actual pest control company. I have used those before and I feel they work about the same as well. Im a female. I would recommend this to a friend.

I ised this product for about a month. Im around the age of 30.

So here’s what I think I’ve learned: 1. Put it in a mouse path 2. Check every four days, to see if anyone is actually eating the bait. (If I find that this isn’t true in the kitchen, I’ll move it to the basement.

) 3. Replace the bait as needed, wearing gloves. I have used mechanical mouse traps before, and kind of like them in the sense that you know whether or not you killed a mouse. Using this product instead means that the dead mice could end up anywhere.

Alas. But I’m going to get more of them, so off I go. Although I think the mice mostly live in the basement, I’ve opted to put this in the kitchen on the floor between the fridge and the counter. I read the instructions and warnings over and over again to see whether this was considered unsafe, but I think I’m good.

the bait is enclosed, etc. Overall, no more mice or rats and I can sleep more peacefully. This mouse station has done the trick and has kept the mouse problem from returning. Since there are no mice in the cabin anymore, (we sealed every entry point we could find), we placed the bait station underneath the cabin in the crawlspace.

This has helped eliminate the mouse problem and we are now able to enjoy the cabin without having to deal with mice and worry about the diseases they can carry. Time will tell on how well this holds up and works.

I recently got the Tomcat rat & mouse killer child & dog resistant, disposable station for use in a shed where we have issues with mice, especially in the fall and winter. I’m in central PA. We use the shed to store patio and other items during the winter, along with bird feed, seed, and other yard care items.

While I tried to seal the shed as well as I could and ensure that any food sources (e. g. , bird seed and feed) are properly sealed/stored, I still end up finding mouse droppings and bedding each spring when I take patio furniture, etc.

back out. I tried humane mouse traps (placing them along areas where I know, based on scat) that mice travel. Despite baiting them with some tasty treats, the traps didn’t work. It was time to move to more drastic measures.

While I haven’t placed it in the shed yet (it’s not quite time for fall storage here in central PA, it’s getting close), I’m looking forward to seeing just how effective this thing is. Some points to note.

Obviously, when handling this station, use disposable gloves and wash your hands with soap and water after handling. Also, this is not a trap. Nowhere that I saw does the station’s label indicate that it’s a trap.

This is a bait station that contains 0. 01% bromethalin… a lethal nerve agent… and, it is NOT humane. If you’re looking for humane, look elsewhere. I tried humane methods. They didn’t work. While I don’t like the approach this station uses, I’m forced to use it at this point, as all other measures have failed and the mice (not an infestation, but a nuisance just the same) are chewing holes in my shed’s floorboards.

The time for playing nice is over. Would I use this approach in any living space? Not, unless absolutely necessary. You have to understand, the chemical slowly kills the rodent. That means that it ingests the chemical, walks away, and dies.

Where it dies remains to be seen. Hopefully you can reach the dead rodent before it decomposes. Otherwise, you potentially have a whole other set of problems. For use outside, in a shed, where there are no cracks or crevices in which to crawl… yes, I’ll chance finding a dead mouse where I might not otherwise expect to find it.

Also, while the chemical concentration is enough to kill mice, rats, and other rodents, it is not nearly enough to kill cats and dogs (or people)… although they could get mildly sick from the dosage, according to trusted sites.

Do the research on this chemical (using medical/trusted chemical sites) if you’re worried. FWIW, the station is sturdily built. It would be very difficult for any large animal (or person) to get into the housing without mechanical means.

Worth purchasing? That remains to be seen. Based on reviews on other sites (with 10s of thousands of reviews indicating that this device works as designed), the Tomcat Rat & Mouse Killer Child & Dog Resistant, Disposable Station appears to be safe (for non-rodents) and effective.

While I wish humane methods would’ve worked, they didn’t. It’s time for other measures. Based on all that I’ve read about the effectiveness of the chemical (and the concentration) used in the station, and how well I can personally tell you that the station is built (ensuring that nothing gets into the station other than what it was designed to allow), I’m going to give it a four-star rating.

You’ll see lower ratings provided by a few. However, read the ratings closely. The lower ratings are generally offered because the station doesn’t offer a professional-grade chemical and/or because it uses an inhumane lethal nerve agent.

A) Consumers can’t legally get professional grade chemicals… for very legitimate reasons. B) the chemical and concentration used will do its intended job. And, C), you have to go into this purchase knowing that the method of killing the rodent isn’t humane.

Based on my very thorough research, this station will work for my use case, which is why I’m giving it a solid four-star rating.

i set this up before going to bed and in the morning a rat had already eaten half of a poison cake (housed inside the unit). we haven’t seen this invader since, and no more signs of any varmints at all.

Amazing! in ten hours, my rat problem was gone. In the intervening week, no signs of further rats, and no further gnawing on the poison. This may be premature, but i think this worked far better than traditional traps, which i have now thrown away as useless.

I will continue to monitor the poison thru the see-thru window and move this unit around the house and yard. We originally thought we might need several units for our small house and yard, but this one may just be good enough.

This is the first time I have tried a bait station to catch rats that made the mistake of entering my backyard. My neighbors have a chicken coop next to our shared fence and the rats love to steal the chicken feed.

I’ve found several running along the fence line and wanted to make sure they aren’t taking up residence in my yard. I’ve never been a fan of regular mouse traps and I figured if the bait station style of rodent control is good enough for commercial businesses, they certainly would work for my needs as well.

I love that the boxes can be set horizontally or vertically and used both inside or outside. They are also resistant to tampering by children and dogs. The clear lid makes it extremely easy to keep track of how many rodents have been caught by the trap.

So far, one rat has met its demise. Super simple disposal and a product made in the USA are 2 more reasons these bait boxes are my new go to product for rodent control.

I was in true denial that I had mice in my garage. Well, after laying this down under something, and only a week in and boom it was there. I checked the trap, and they had eaten some of the block. I couldn’t believe it.

After just two weeks of buying a couple other traps of the same brand, since I know it works ( i have bought others and never noticed anything) There is less poop in garage, But my only issue is if the mouse just ate the poison about how long does it truly work? And does that mean I could have dead mice somewhere in my house now? But whatever, I will jump that hurdle next.

I really like how well this mouse bait station worked. I have seen a few mice in my garage and after a few days of using this product I haven’t seen any mice or droppings since. I was very surprised at how easy this was to setup and use.

I really like that this product is not messy and doesn’t require any extra clean up. I also really like that you can easily refill this product. The bait station is small and can easily fit into small areas.

Raccoons were destroying our box style rat bait stations. Initially they would drag them off and clean them out. We anchored them to concrete block and they would still reach in and rip out the pins that hold the bait.

After regluing the pins multiple times, we started looking for alternatives and found these. (You can also make something out of PVC pipe but these are prefab and lower cost than diy). I like how they have baffles at each end to further discourage non-target animals.

We secure them to 3′ stakes with ss pipe clamps. The stakes are. 5″ zinc conduit which is cheaper and easier to handle than rebar. You could also zip tie these, but I wouldn’t trust them if you have raccoons.

I was advised by animal rights and the DC Government to stop just simply placing pesticide bars out for mice that were using my garage as a hotel. Both organizations recommended this rodent station to bring me into compliance and do the job.

I purchased a case of them and they’re out there doing the job. I occasionally refill them and pick up a dead mice in my yard. Highly recommended!.

I bought a station and bucket of bait blocks, set it up in my barn where I’d seen daily rat activity, and 2 days later there is NO activity at all. WOW I cannot believe it worked that fast! Also on that first day, I tossed several blocks into the loft where there is no feed but where I’d heard a lot of rat activity.

All afternoon I could hear the rats moving the blocks around. This Tomcat bait is the best bait I’ve found for speed of kill and apparent palatability to rodents.

We have been buying these for years. They are the best bait boxes out there. We tried a few others and were always disappointed. We drill a little hole in the lip. Had problems with critters moving the bait boxes around.

I think there’s a hole there, but it goes through top and bottom. We drill a hole such that we can open the box while messing with it as little as possible.

It might work very well. if only it came with freaking BAIT! And the TSC doesn’t SELL the dang bait that fits this trap (you know – with HOLES in it to be able to slide down on the rod that keeps the bait in place).

And I can’t find the bait anywhere. So, I wasted my money, and now have to put up with a rat in my house till I find something that will work and have it SHIPPED to me. very disappointed.

I tried the Tomcat Child & Dog Resistant Disposable Rat & Mouse Killer station. This is a good time to put out bait with the weather getting cooler. I like that the poison is contained and cannot be easily accessed by pets or children.

However, it still has the caution that the rodents that eat the poison then go out and can be eaten by other animals, which may kill them. This station is compact enough to easily place around the house and can be placed horizontally or vertically.

It had a good design and you can easily see how much bait is left in the station without needing to touch it. Once the bait is gone, you can just pick the whole thing up and throw it out. There is little worry about little crumbs of poison that the rodents will carry out of the trap because they have to maneuver out.

I would recommend this trap for anyone who wants to put out poison to get rid of mice.

This is a review of the Tomcat® Rat & Mouse Killer Child & Dog Resistant, Disposable Station. First let me say that I don’t know that I have a rat/mouse problem, but it doesn’t hurt to be preventative.

I do have a cat though so I wanted to use something that wouldn’t harm it. The disposable station pretty much solves that problem as the cat wouldn’t be able to get to the bait inside the container. I decided to place the station in the corner of the garage to see if maybe I do have a rat/mouse problem.

Placing of the disposable station is pretty straight forward – with gloves just remove from box and place it where you want it. There is no opening, placing the bait, etc. It’s already setup to be placed.

So, it really can’t be easier. Now from an effective perspective I can’t really tell if it works or not since if you look at my picture the bait has not been touched after 7 days. Once again this is more of a preventative measure than an active measure so it’s hard to tell if it’s working or not.

Only time will tell.

It was exactly what I needed. Its low profile makes it easy to slide under other things to keep out of sight. Our dog totally ignored the ones out in plain sight. They are easy to load with the poisoned bait.

They are strong and give you an option to add a second lock if needed.

Very good station for the price. Set 6 of them around my acreage and started seeing results after several days. Keep them cleaned out and replace bait every so often. I placed a paving stone on mine to keep lager animals flipping them.

These were shipped quickly , they were large and had two options for bait assembly inside , Plus extra rods for bait placement. I like these better than other brands I’ve purchased in the past. These are very sturdy easy to use , and I won’t ever need to look for anything else.

My husband told me one evening that he thought he saw a rat where we store our trash cans outside. I didn’t want to believe it but we looked closer and found some fresh animal droppings that looked like rat droppings.

I did some research and the Tomcat Rat & Mouse Killer has great review so I thought I will give it a try. I have a dog and it is super important to us that we only use products that are dog friendly especially if it could be poisonous.

The Tomcat rat & mouse killer included a kid and dog resistant station. The station is indeed hard to open and I feel that it is dog proof. The box included one refillable station and 15 blocks of bait which is plenty.

Each block kills up to 3 rats! The bait station has a little plastic window that lets you see inside to check if you caught anything and to see how much bait is left. I was not sure what to expect but it worked and it worked super fast! We caught a rat the first night and another one the next night.

They have been out for about a Month now. I especially like the clear viewing window, makes it easier to monitor the bait. Using around multiple buildings at our church. Seven around sanctuary four each around bus garage and four around activity building.

I was sold on the fact that they were child and pet tamper proof and could be used outdoor as well as indoor.

Had this for a couple of years and have gone through a LOT of bait. Nice feature is that it has a viewing window on top so you can see when you need to replace the bait. In July and Aug I was having to replace the bait every day.

So if they are taking the bait it must be working. Recommend buying a buck of the bait blocks that fit when you get it so you won’t have to come back to the store for more soon.

I like the way the poison blocks are secured in the box. Rats & mice like to grab food and carry it away. This forces them to consume it in the box. Also a clear window to verify if it’s time to add more.

I used these bait boxes because of my dogs. I’m also concerned about the wild life. It’s easy to use and stays in the spots you decide. Every 2 months or so you need to clean it out and add more bait in them.

These bait stations are simple to use and very well made. They should easily last decades. My recommendation to homeowners placing them outside: make sure to weigh them down either at the base or on top.

Raccoons raided two of my bait stations, knocking the units silly until the bait blocks broke and came out the station entrances. Weights would have prevented that.

I love the Tomcat Mouse Killer, refillable station. This is and has been one of the upmost effective rat trap, effective poison. The best part is that no nasty smell is ever lingering around. The blocks them selves work great but the trap helps with the clean-up.

I learned that you keep all water away from the area you are treating because they drink it after chewing on the green block and it helps pass the effects out of their body. But no water no mice around.

What a great item to use when no cat is available.

I’ve purchased more of these than I should have, if I’d have known they are so cheaply made and worthless. I’ve had every complaint imaginable, traps not locking open, bait gone and trap not tripped, bait and trap gone, and rarely do I actually catch one.

They are difficult to clean without having to get your hands into the filth, and it’s just a poor design, poor functioning, and barely capable of catching a rat. These are so lightweight that one rat is wearing one as an adornment and went about his business.

The trap and him are gone! I tried the wooden Tomcat traps and these are worse. I can’t get a package with 2 good traps in ANYTHING I buy from Tomcat, regardless of what it is. I’m so disgusted because I see Made in USA on the package, and to see this make me ill.

Is this what Made in USA means now? OMG, we’re in bigger trouble than I thought! Tomcat has ZERO Quality control or quality assurance and doesn’t seem to care. Maybe it’s time to move to Costa Rica? For God’s sake, have some dignity and respect for what you sell.

This is ridiculous! EVERYTHING YOU SELL IS CHEAP CRAP!! I’M DONE! I’ve never been so disappointed in any product!.

This rat trap WORKS! I suggest adding peanut butter, or part of a banana on the bait section. It snaps on the neck/head. It usually is instant death or about 1-5 mins for the rat to die. This is actually more humane than those sticky traps.

which can mess up rodents legs. Some sticky traps’ glue isn’t strong enough for rats unless you get the large sticky traps from a pest control service. But, then you have to be concerned with how to exterminate the rodent after it is stuck on the sticky trap.

I have removed mice and a rat from stickies and allowed them to go back into a wooded area, but you have to be too careful so you aren’t bitten. It just is too upsetting to use sticky traps. The snap trap is superior.

So far i have gotten 7 rats with the traps but not all of them died right away and they run off. You will have to look for the trap and maybe dispatch the rat yourself. One of mine was caught by the tail and ran under the stairs.

I had to try to pull it out with a stick and it got free from the trap. Researchers have found evidence that rats are capable of metacognition–that is, they can possess knowledge of their own cognitive states.

This ability, which can also be thought of as the capacity to assess or reflect on one’s own mental processes, was previously only recognized in humans and other primates. Basically this means that that rat now knowns that that trap caught it and that most likely means this rat wont be caught by another trap like this.

Rats have been known to learn from other rats by watching and understanding.

The mouse love it. It is keeping them well fed and alive. Doesn’t kill them at all. It’s been a week since I’ve started feeding them – they are thriving. The only thing I will do with this is to use it as bait for a snap trap.

Snap traps at least kill the mouse.

Storage building overrun by rats, be patient doesn’t kill immediately. They ate up 3 blocks in 1 week. Kept baiting them this is 3rd week , so far at least 20 found dead, plus nest of babies. Keep baiting until they quit eating.

This is the best rat and mouse thing to get rid of them. The feed store where we got it don’t sale it anymore. My grand daughter lives in town and they had them bad. I gave her 1 block she put it out and now they have not seen any running in yard and didn’t hear any in house.

I had mice getting into my first-floor crawl space between floors. They are eating and scratching the rubber air conditioning insulation on the cold side copper freon line. That is causing condensation buildup and dripping on the ceiling sheetrock and ruining it.

$2000 worth of work later and I declared war on these little varmints. Tried the electric trap for about 2 months and never got a mouse. Birds and mice were somehow eating the peanut butter without getting shocked.

So, I saw the Victor Fast-Kill Brand Refillable Mouse Bait Station and gave it a try. I can see the bait station has moved a few times, but had not found out if it got the mice. But I will keep putting it there as recommended until I am sure that I have finished or put a dent in the mice issue in my condo.

As with all bait products, the mice are probably eating the bait and going somewhere else to die. Kind of like that better than handling a snap trap or glue trap with the dead mice or rat on it. The bait station is very well built and easy to change the bait out.

It is small and a rat could not get to the bait, but my battle is with mice for now. Mice can enter from either end of the bait station. Also, the way is it designed, it is very safe for pets and children in that they cannot get to the bait.

This product is also very well priced especially when compared to other methods and product to eliminate mice and rats. I definitely recommend this product as a preventative or if you have a known mice issue.

I received this Victor Fast-Kill Brand Refillable Mouse Bait Station u2013 10 Baits product for free through the Walmart Spark Reviewer program. I’ve been having issues with my outdoor storage shed and rodents shredding my boxes and practically getting into every last thing I put in there.

I’ve tried other ones to control the issue and I seemed to be getting a decent amount of rodents out but the problem still persists so I was glad be able to try a different method. These ones were easy enough to set up, I like that you get to refill it once it’s empty.

Though, the other types I have tried have trapped the rodents in the box and then you get to dispose of them later. This one I have noticed the bait going missing fairly fast and then not finding that many rodents left behind.

So either a couple are scarfing down the bait and dying or multiple rodents are eating the bait and getting a fair distance away before croaking and I just haven’t found the bodies. Which kind of sucks.

The bait is easy enough to refill and you get a good number of baits but I would rather stick with the traps that actually get the killed rodent stuck in there so I can dispose of it. Either that or its just taking a lot more for the rodents to eat and die than what I imagine it would take.

Brilliant. I bought two of these and used the bait sachets rather than blocks. Saw the rat looking at it on first day and second day saw rat entering 4 or 5 times and removing the bait to feed on / feed young later.

Saw the rat the following day and the day after that found it dead behind a water butt. Very effective but have replaced the sachets with solid block bait which is threaded one he metal bar inside the bait station so it cannot be removed as could be a risk for children and pets.

Overall a brilliant and effective and cheap solution to my rat problem. Rat has gone and I’m protected from any others coming in. the garden. Would recommend.

Good enough. Same sealed bait box at a fraction of the cost. Bait quickly Dias appeared as rodents are initially attracted to feeding frenzy until they’ve all fed and taken enough bait to work. Therefore check and top up bait more frequently than Rec seven days.

Don’t worry as once first surge had been met rat population should start to fall as they’ve all fed! Sadly others will eventually return as they follow old urine trails so expect to Re-treat in future.

My dog simply watched the rats and had remained both safe and unaffected but no longer has rats to watch!! Only wish public could buy more potent poison to kill more quickly.

I have 2 small dogs so wanted something safe to use and this fits the bill. After the November exodus from the fields the rats had their eyes on moving in under my fibreglass fish pond, their tunnels causing it to tip down one end, so it now resembles the Titanic a bit, so a big job in the summer to straighten it up.

In the meantime I have two bait stations to kill the blighters off before they gnaw through the pond itself. I hate killing anything but needs must in this case as some of my fish are in their second decade now and quite large so I have to protect them.

Id recommend these kits, the blocks slide onto a rod which is secured inside by a clip, so when Roland and his family chomp on the bait blocks they cant work loose and drop onto the ground for birds or other wildlife to get at.

I bought the weatherproof blocks to go in these as they last longer in damp weather. The lid is held in place with a tamper proof lock the key clips underneath the box but Ive brought mine indoors and keep it safe in a drawer.

Id say theyll last for ages, but theyll be going away in the shed come summer when Roland and his family go back to the hedgerows.
