20 Best Pasture Grass For Horses (2022 Updated)

This fine-fescue blend worked very well for us in a half-shade backyard. If you like fescue, this is definitely IT. We are trying the seed again on a different yard that’s even shadier. A lawn full of fescue may not appeal to everyone, it has its own look; but as long as there’s not too much sun (will burn it out in a year or two), this seed is excellent, in our experience.

I received this product but have to wait to actually use it. But everythinf in the website was good and the shipping was fast! Will diffently order again! My bees will love it!

I like this seed blend because it grows solid blades; it has a dark, lush color; and, it looks very stately and intentional (not just some wild grass growing where it wanted).

Good stuff. Wild bunnies and birds like to run around and eat and play in it. So happy to find it on Walmart. I use this outside my clover yard and it helps keep everything eating outside the fence.

I bought a bag for my chickens ’cause grass just doesn’t last long and getting a mixed bag of seed to make everyone happy seemed a just and worthy expense. I set up a planter box with hardware wire over the top and with 4 days, greens were already popping up and somehow unaffected by the early spring frost.

Used this seed for years to bring back good greens for my chickens to eat. It sprouts and grows well, and the girls love it!

You can’t beat the quality from Standlee hay pellets. Tried Dumour when TS was out of the other. What a mistake. The color of the pellets were brown and you could tell they were old, crumble in your hand even though the date was fine on the bag.

If there ever is an issue with Standlee they are great to deal with and stand behind their products 1000%!! Been using them for many years and will never change.

Wish there were more consistency between bags. Some bags are crumbly, some appear as if the pellets are actually “coated” with a waxy substance and don’t soak well. The last bag I opened was actually a combination of the two – you can see an obvious difference in the pellets.

I feed these to my OTTB gelding and donkeys as part of their daily ration, along with low starch feed and ration balancer. I put a lot of thought and money into feeding them, and wish the quality was a little better for the price.

I do like the convenience of the TSC app and curbside pickup.

Always drain the water with a colander,The pellets this time are all mixed with a large amount of sand and soil. amount of pellets soaked in water was completely different from before, and corn was also mixed.

This variety of ryegrass grew ok and produced fairly good leaves. My horse eats it just fine. However, it does not grow as vigorously as the previous version I normally use (out of stock). I tried this as an alternative since the regular variety I purchase was out of stock.

It did grow and produced OK, but the other version seems to be more hardy. I will switch back and order earlier in the season next time.

Great! I got a bag to test a totally bare sand half acre that was destroyed horses. Took only about 3-4 days to start seeing the blades growing. Came in wonderfully thick. Ordering 3 more back for the rest of the pastures.

Located in the Piedmont region of Georgia and planted this ryegrass on October 12. It is now day 10 and have a bright green hue of ryegrass sprouts across my pasture. Overseeded with this and crimson clover.

Very pleased with what has occurred so far. Finger crossed, hoping for solid forage production this winter.

Best hay for ur pet bunz I have a terribly picky hay eater & well we can’t have that now can we so I set out to try n find one he would even look at & I’m happy to say after about 20 or so diff brands THIS IS THEE 1 & ONLY TRUE WINNER HE LOVES THIS STUFF WILL ONLY EAT STANDLEE PERIOD!! I don’t blame him either cuz from the looks & smells of it, shoot I’d probly only eat it too lol! This was a first time purchase for this hay. Over the last 6 mos or so hay quality for everyone has been going down hill. So I just started to shop around. This was in my price range and reviews were pretty good so I gave it a try.

When I opened the box, there was none of the normal fragrance. The color was very pale and it was very dry. I was rather disappointed, but then, I have never purchased ‘foraging’ hay before, so this may be normal.

My bunny didn’t seem to care for it, but after a couple of days he was eating more of it. I think I am going to order another box so I can compare the two. Maybe this was just a bad box. So I guess we’ll see.

My chinchilla will not eat this ” so called hay “. It is more like straw than hay. I’ve been feeding him hay from Standlee for about 2 1/2 years now and it was always good till I got this box. I don’t know if was a bad crop but this was money lost.

I’m looking into other companies. I don’t know if it will be any better , but I have to find something he’ll eat. Good luck to anyone willing to give it a try. Oh , and it is very dusty.

This Fairway Formula Perennial Rye-grass Blend by Greenview is an excellent choice. This Rye grass blend is perfect for the patchy areas in my back yard. I also used it to over seed a few areas near my walkway and driveway that tend to get damaged due to being high traffic areas.

This is the most beautiful package of clean seeds I have ever seen. There is absolutely no fillers, no clumping, no dirt or dust, or any debris in this bag. It is the cleanest, most uniform package of grass seeds I’ve come across.

It’s been about 2 weeks and I definitely see improvement in my lawns fullness. Since these are pure, uncoated seeds, I seeded the lawn right before it rained for two days. I am happy with my results and think this is an excellent choice for over seeding lawns.

Put seed down about 3 weeks used top soil mixed together raked in,not a blade has come up. Followed directions with watering. Never used Jonathan seed before, heard great reviews but not what i expected.

I have been trying to grow grass in my shady yard for many years. The manager of a local lawn company recommended that I stop using his seeds (that are made for sun and shade) and change to dense shade seeds.

I did — and am so excited over the Jonathan Green dense shade grass that is coming up all over my lawn.

I planted Black Beauty sun and shade in the spring. I was not impressed on how it can up. I may have got half of it to come up. It also took a very long time to germinate. The front and the side came up.

Nothing in the back or the other side. I dethached and aerated too. I bought 7 bags. So I’m going to give this grass seed a satisfactory rating.

Overall a decent orchard hay for a 2021 crop. Hay quality will vary year to year, so this review may not apply to future crops. My guinea pigs enjoy it. The bales are so compacted that the straps pop when you cut them off! Serving this in clumps will frustrate your pet.

You really need to fluff this hay up before serving so your pet can enjoy it strand by strand, without having to struggle with untangling the bale themselves. The strand lengths are semi short to medium.

Considering how compacted the bale is, I’m impressed that the hay isn’t just crumbs. It goes to show that the hay isn’t overly dried, but soft and flexible. The shorter strands make this hay more prone of falling out of traditional hay holders, so I prefer to serve it in grass baskets (which are sold as woven grass beds if you’re looking for some).

The color is green, another indication of the freshness. The blades on this batch are narrow which is likely an indication of growing conditions, not low quality.

Bought the 10 pound box for my 2 young guinea pigs. It was really good quality and they go wild for it, especially mixed with dry herbs they can forage around for. The box was also very small, which is handy as I don’t have a ton of storage space.

Will definitely be an ongoing customer if the quality stays this good. Grass was green and fresh, smelled great, very very low dust.

I’ve ordered this hay several times in prairie and orchard. I will say my bunnies tend to like orchard more for whatever reason. However my experience here is it has low dust, compared to regular of the shelf brands.

I have purchased seed from your company for a number of years, but I will not buy any more going forward. I purchased Bahia seed early last fall and again this past spring. You already received a call several months ago when the spring Bahia mix seed did NOT germinate.

Basically, I was blown off and told to wait longer. Well, I waited for the planted areas to sprout. The rye grass died off, and the seed finally began to germinate. Only the grass that came up was NOT Bahia but Crabb grass.

It has grown, spread nicely covered the areas where the “Bahia” seed was planted in my front pasture. In the back pasture, I’m still waiting for the Bahia (or any) spring seed mix to sprout. The Rye grass in both fall & spring varieties germinated; but the Bahia seeds have NOT.

The only reason this notice, my second attempt to contact you, is delayed is because I have had major medical problems. Total dissatisfaction with your product.

Received quickly, grass is coming in as expected on second 2 acre pasture. We used Hancock seed for our first 5 acre pasture and it’s still going strong. I will keep using Hancock seed just because their product has proven itself with us.

Used this in SW Florida to overseed pastures. I used other mixtures for the past ten years but none have performed as well as this in our soil (basically sand). The pastures have come up thick and lush while holding up best to the horse hoofs of all previous mixes.

This summer Warm Climate Mix is definitely a winner, Overseeding twice a year I will be using the winter blend in the fall.

This pasture seed works great to fill bare spots and to make pasture fuller. I use in spring when we get plenty of rain.

I do not see any signs of this grass coming up. Some of the seeds spilled next to my porch steps directly on the ground and just laid there even after several rain showers.

Works very well and very efficient! The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. We will definitely be in again.

Planted seed took a little while to germinate. Once it rained it came in well.

This is a long review, but this seed is expensive and I hope my experience will help others get their best results. Started over by having my wonderful hubby spend a full day repeatedly roto-tilling our old, weedy front lawn, just shy of 5,000 sq.

ft. Then I spent two weeks pulling up and removing all tilled up grasses and weeds. I tested the soil ph, added the recommended amount of lime and watered it in. Finally, on June first, after leveling and applying Scott’s starter fertilizer, I applied the seed and lightly raked it in.

I kept the ground moist by lightly watering repeatedly through the day for the first two weeks, never once letting the soil dry out. After only 4 days, I could see a few tiny blades emerging. There are a very few assorted weeds, which is to be expected, and I am quite sure these are from weed seeds already existing in the soil and NOT from the grass seed.

(This is just one of the reasons it is best to seed in the fall when weeds are dying out – but I just couldn’t wait. ) I should add that we have nice loamy soil. Perhaps that makes a difference. After reading reviews stating lawns appeared thin seeded at the recommended rate, I spread the entire 25 lb.

bag. Double the recommended amount. Glad I did as I agree the lawn would have been thin at the recommended rate. The only place the grass is thin is around the drip edge of our clump river birch. The water from the sprinkler hitting the leaves and running off the downturned branches either moved or drowned the seed.

My takeaway from that is that while it is imperative to keep the seed moist at all times don’t over water to the point of puddling. I had to mow after only 16 days. It is now one month later and we are mowing twice a week! It was A LOT of work but so worth it.

Our new lawn is beautiful!!! Looks like something you’d see in a magazine! I can hardly wait to tackle the back yard in the fall. And I will most certainly be using the Black Beauty Ultra again.

After several other brands of seed failed to take I bought a bag of this Black Beauty Ultra to cover several bare patches in my back yard. I raked, seeded, and raked again to setup the seed. Watered maybe once a day (or every other day to be honest) and I was shocked to actually have grass in about 2 weeks.

I was so happy that I bought two more bags to address the front yard. The only difficulty I had was timing because small birds love this stuff. After losing a crop to a flock of foragers I covered a second application with straw netting and had no issues.

I did a total lawn leveling and reseeding project this past fall and I couldn’t be happier with the results! With any grass seed the key is to always keep the soil moist. Once the seed dries out it’s not going to grow.

Depending on the weather outside I was watering at least 2 times a day and sometimes 3 on the couple hot days that were left. I tried the recommended spreader settings but it did not seem near enough seed so I went a little heavy on the seed doing multiple passes.

I had to buy a second bag to finish my lawn of a little over 5000 sq ft. The 25lbs bag says ‘coverage area: 10,000 sq ft’ and I’m not sure how that is possible. I’ll see what my grass looks like in the spring but I’m very happy and relieved that everything grew in!.

I have a fair amount of area where two huge male mulberry trees create a ton of shade. It’s been a love/hate relationship given I love the shade trees but, hate the bald dirt area underneath them. Within 5 days after spreading the seeds, I noticed the grass had already grown at least 1 inch. The area was filled with thick lush green grass within one month. NO LIE! I was not paid or given any sample this product to write a positive review.

This review is being written solely because this product deserves every ounce of praise it has coming. Sure, some reviews may not be positive however, I can assure you, the negative was likely due to an inability to follow instructions (like planting in off season or poor soil prep, etc.

). If you plant this seed (w/ suggested starter food) there truly isn’t any way it will not grow. Honestly, this seed grows like nobodies business. Also, I’d like to add. where I planted the seed is at my weekend retreat home so, I am only there watering this grass once a week.

I’ll be clear in stating, I used a timer to water the grass in its first stages but, once the seed took off, I’ve been watering only once a week and the grass has continued to thrive for nearly a year now.

I recently moved from Pennsylvania to Central Florida. Let’s just say that taking care of your yard down here is wayyy different than up North! I was excited to see that Pennington had grass seed that was specifically targeted to grow in my area.

I don’t know much about these things but my husband tells me that this was a good score. The heat had our yard looking a bit patchy and the grass had been dormant. We caught the rain and got the seed down just in time.

I waited a couple of weeks to post results. So far it’s definitely looking like it made a very nice difference!! I would definitely buy this again!! I posted before and after pics. there’s a definite difference!! The little bag is convenient but big enough to make a big impact.

I wish I had read the other reviews before I bought this garbage grass seed. I spent nearly $400 on seed and fertilizer and spent hours dethatching and preparing my yard. Three weeks later, still no GRASS.

The seed is rotting on the soil. It never germinated and now it is too late to put Scott’s grass seed down. So now I am stuck all winter with A Muddy Mess of a yard! Pennington doesn’t care, not their time, money or muddy mess.

What a shame that a company can get away with selling garbage!!!!!!!!!.

I like the seed, the bags reads 8 to 21 for germination. That’s true, I planted my yard with seed half the grass seed did not grow. Was thinking this must be bad seed. But being a farmer I had the agronomist do a soil test.

Found out my top soil I spent good money on was why off. I fixed the problem with some lime. But was told by agronomist that spring and fall was the best time to plant grass its cool and wet. I new that but I needed grass in July.

So I planted extra heavy the ground was blue with seed. Than my wife said ” online it said to cover or work in seed”. Lol so I had to go out and rack all the seed into the soul. Than last I was told to rack it all in evenly by my 85 year old father.

So you get even emergence. Than I watered lightly every day for almost 21 days. Wish I wouldn’t have put so much grass seed down. I’m mowing 2x a week now but it looks nice. My only complaint is why cant I just throw seed on the grown and have it grow.

Simple live right. Lol.

This is the fastest germinating grass seed I have ever planted. It is thick and bright green. I am ordering more for more area’s of my yard.

Check shipping charges, The shipping charge cost as much as the grass seed. When I placed the order it said free shipping. I called wallmart and they said it was from a third party vendor that is why I had to pay for shipping.

Just tried this dense shade area of my back yard and I need to wait and see what comes up. I hope this works as I have tried everything in the past.

I usually try to overseed our yard each fall. Since we have a fairly good size yard, I try to get a reasonably priced grass seed. For the past several years I have been using seed from TSC. I have used the DLF KY-31 Tall Fescue several times now and have been pleased with the results.

The most important things to me are the germination rate, the germination time, and the durability. I am very pleased with the results in these three areas. Even though Middle TN tends to get quite hot and often dry in the summer, the DLF KY-31 tends to do quite well, even though fescue is a cool season grass.

This brand my die back a little during the hottest times, it tends to come back nicely when it starts to cool off and the autumn rain begins to fall. I am well pleased.

I have bought quite a bit of this grass seed over the years, typically 2 bags per year(100lbs total), and it seems every year i get less satisfactory results. This past spring i overseeded and planted some new areas only to have patches of this grass die after a couple weeks.

I came up great but went downhill from there. I tried more water and less water in hopes to figure out what was happening but it didnt help. I just overseeded the current lawn and planted a new patch with fresh loam and while it came up great, after a couple weeks large, brown patches of dead grass started appearing.

This might be my last year buying seed from TSC since i’d rather spend twice as much and end up with green grass instead of brown patches of dead grass.

Bought this seed in spring of 2019. Did not apply the seed to my lawn until late September early October here in the upstate of South Carolina Greenville. I bought a dethatcher for my riding mower. Dethatche the lawn then applied seed.

I watered the lawn every day with my irrigation system at 4am, 10am, 12pm, 3pm, and 7pm. I set the sprinkler system to only water my lawn for 5 minutes at each time programmed, except for the 3pm time.

It was set to water for 10 minute duration at 3pm. I stopped that watering schedule by late October and then let mother nature take over at that point. I applied Scott’s starter for new seed when I seeded the lawn and did a follow up feeding early November.

Within 8 days I had growth. And by the middle of October I had to cut the lawn. Then cut the lawn again in November. I also made sure I kept the leaves off the lawn all winter long. On March 10th 2020 I put down Scott’s triple action fertilizer with crab grass preventer.

Reactivated my irrigation system on March 20th and it now waters the lawn on Saturday Tuesday and Thursday at 4am for 15 minutes and again at 5pm for 15 minutes. And I have to say my yard looks AWESOME! Very good seed.

These compressed bales are perfect for my senior pony with aged teeth. 🙂 Due to the compression process they have been chopped, cut in multiple directions and then compressed into small, tidy, tote able bales.

This does produce more dust or “fines” as Standlee calls it, so I do soak the hay before feeding but I would do that for my senior regardless of what forage is fed. The quality is very consistent and if there is an issue with any of their products Standlee is always happy to make it right! The bales are expensive so it is not an economical choice for a full sized, hungry horse, but they are convenient and come in handy for the right situation.

I highly recommend for unique feeding scenarios.

I planted the seed according to the directions on the package. I did not put down fertilizer with the seed since the directions discouraged this as perhaps negatively impacting the germination. I watered it diligently to keep the seed bed moist and I was very careful to make sure that the seed had adequate contact with the soil as I always do.

This is the worst outcome I have ever had with grass seed. I’ve always had germination in the past with other seeds. so disappointed, a big waste of money and effort!.
