20 Best Tamper For Espresso (2022 Updated)

This tamper is nice on the outside and easy to use, the weight is ok, it fits nice and easy on the 58mm filter. The inside is other story, my complaint is the low quality of the internal mechanism, mine comes with a spring, a very rusty spring, this going to reduce the life of the tamper for sure.

I don’t know if other calibrated tapers with more quality comes with similar mechanisms but this one is very simple, try to compare others before making your decision. What happens after a while of using it, is that you get used to the amount of pressure needed.

Good for newbies or enthusiasts, is true that almost removes the variable of pressure from the coffee puck equation.

I bought this tamper because it was calibrated, but turned out this tamper has closer tolerances (width) than most tampers I’ve used. While most users wouldn’t care, I discovered there was little if any grounds built up on the inside of the filter wall after tamping.

In the past I would have to lightly tap the side of the portafilter to knock those grounds off the filter wall. This was a real plus for me. This was true for the 58mm. I can’t say it would be true for other sizes.

If you’re looking for a replacement of your 54mm tamp that came along with Breville Barista Express. “THIS DOES NOT FIT WELL”! I suggest you look elsewhere. I just don’t know why some people here commented that it fits perfectly! it doesn’t.

OF CAUSE IT”S A 53MM. my fault. should have look on the numbers instead of others comments! But if you really don’t mind a little gap on the side. This will surely give you a consistent shot everyday! Ive never got a headache since!.

I bought this tamper in July 2022 and now in September 2022 it is not longer working as it should. Specifically, it depresses but there is no “click” which means that its not regulating the pressure to 30lbs before the handle gives.

Notably there is whole FAQ devoted to this issue on the Espro website. Unfortunately, I only found that now. Contacting WLL support they told me there is probably coffee oils in the tamper so I need to take it apart and clean it.

BUT it isn’t a tamper that can be disassembled. Hopefully Espro will honor the 1-yr warranty and exchange it per their policy even though I didn’t buy it directly from them. WLL should understand the products they sell – know what the quality issues are – and stand behind the products.

Not just tell people to “probably just clean it”.

This is the perfect weight in two senses: it is a calibrated tamper, and helps me tamp with consistent weight everytime, and feels satisfyingly heavy. Light tampers are weird, in my opinion. The handle is not perfectly “smooth”, as it has very small ridges.

I imagine this helps with grip. If it was made with a lathe, it might also be part of that process. If I was to give two suggestions about this tamper, I don’t really like the sticker on top. Just a personal preference: it is a different texture, and looks only okay.

I am also not sure how I feel about the texture of the handle, as I have liked perfectly smooth tampers in the past and never really had a problem with grip. But pretty small issues in the grand scheme of things.

We liked these because it evened the playing field between two very different tamper operators. The feel great in the hand and have a satisfying click. We’ve had two of these–first one took a trip down the disposal and stopped clicking–mia culpa.

Second one lasted 25 months and stopped clicking. A reply from Espro customer service: “you may purchase another one at 20% off!” as the warranty is only good for a year. Not even an offer to repair it.

So disappointing a $90 tamper is bricked after two years.

My family bought a small Breville espresso machine, but it shipped with a terrible plastic tamp-on-a-stick that doubled as a scoop for ground coffee. It was unusable, as there was no way to get a grip to apply pressure evenly.

We ordered the 49mm size, and the wooden handle on the Motta tamp made it easy to hold comfortably and tamp evenly. If you use the plastic tamp your home machine shipped with, do yourself a favour and upgrade to the Motta tamp.

Really high quality tamper. Reassuringly heavy, lovely feel to the wooden handle, and a perfect fit to precision baskets. Can’t recommend highly enough!

Heavy, well made and sturdy. Note that this is good for 58 mm but if you want an exact fit you may need 58.3mm or 58.4 mm depending on your port a filter size.

I purchased a Dedica Espresso Machine, which came with a plastic spoon and tamper. The plastic tamper was ok, but I knew there was better out there. I welcomed this tamper into my espresso making routine, and I’ll never go back.

Perfect fit. A few months ago we purchased a DeLonghi Dedica and have been extremely pleased with the machine. Our current instrument, a scoop/tamper, was just not doing the job well. After purchasing the DLSC058 tamper, we are quite pleased with the fit, weight and handling feel.

This dual-sided tamper is an excellent addition to my espresso making. I own a Delonghi EC155M espresso maker, which is a basic, beginner’s espresso maker and has an attached tamper that cannot be removed.

Though the attached tamper works it is difficult to get an even and uniform tamp to the espresso grounds. I often get a beveled surface, rather than a smooth, level tamp, that I’m looking for. Also the steam from the machine leaves moisture on the tamper, since it’s right next to the tamper, creating a caking effect on the espresso grounds as I’m tamping, often pulling chunks of grounds out.

With the new tamper I am able to put even pressure on the espresso grounds. The tamper is of good heft and quality. When viewing pictures it is difficult to determine the weight of the tamper. I was worried that it would be too light and, perhaps, of poor quality, but I’ve found after several weeks of use that, at least for my skill level, is a perfect compliment to my espresso making.

This is a good step-up for me and I don’t think I need to purchase a calibrated tamper model just quite yet.

Simple tool for tamping coffee into the brew cup. I had to modify mine to fit my slightly smaller than 50mm cup. My cup was 50mm at the top, but tapered to a smaller diameter at the bottom so the tamper would not go down far enough.

I reduced the diameter with a sander until the fit met my needs. At the price of the item, this was not a huge issue, but is the only reason I gave it four starts instead of five. Tamped brewing allows for stronger brew, so less coffee can be used to brew the same strengh cup.

After watching YouTube videos I decided to order this. I don’t know why they have to make so many sizes of baskets. My machine didn’t come with one.

I needed a 49mm coffee tamper because the 50mm tampers are too large. This one is nice and heavy and very beautiful. It was also a great price. I’m very happy with it.

Overall product is solid and well constructed with a good balanced weight. My only complaint is that the handle should have a larger diameter at the top in order to fit more comfortably in the palm of your hand.

I haven’t used many tampers but this one seems very high quality. It has attention to detail in the construction.

This spoon gives the smeg coffee machine the sophistication it deserves. Love it.

Absolutely love this tamper – heavy, attractive and perfectly-sized, it has really improved my coffee making in terms of results (less channeling from a ‘halo’ around the puck), and more of a pleasant and quicker prep process.

The significant weight of this tamper means less effort needs to be made to balance the tamper and press down. I absolutely love it and will likely never replace it ever again!.

The 53mm works well with my Breville Barista Express! Feels nicely weighted and durable. This is certainly a much needed improvement to the small, light, plastic tamper that is provided with the machine.

A quality tamper makes a huge difference, and this Reg Barber is really good. It feels perfect; a nice weight, well balanced, right size for my large hands. I hesitated at the price, but now I’m glad I got this.

Did I really need one to tamp down my coffee, as opposed to using the back of a teaspoon. not really. but I couldn’t resist. It is a lovely solid and satisfyingly tactile product and I simply love using it.

Seems to be good. Doesn’t fit silvia. The silvia basket probably is 57mm. It does fit gaggia classic though. They say it’s better to have tamp weigh 1 lbs at least. This one weight 12. 9 oz. I dont know how much difference it makes.

I mean it’s online so if you’re not an educated consumer about the product you’re ordering, it’s kinda your fault. With that being said, the summary of the aforementioned product on their website was exactly what they said (1lb, stainless, ABS handle) and delivered within their promised date.

So it really satisfied my visual (shiny, clean, and simple) and tactile (hefty and dense) expectations for a sub-$100 tamper. I’d mos def buy from Whole latte love again. Dig the vast array of products for the coffee gadget guy/girl, javaphiles WLL has to offer.

Beautifully made, especially considering the reasonable price point. The substantial heft of it feels great in the hand—the coffee practically tamps itself.

Snug fit, leaving no space between the edges of the PF basket and tamp, allowing all grinds to be pressed down flat and evenly. The chamfered edges on the bottom of the tamp give a good guide as to how deep to press the coffee puck down.

It’s as good as a Pullman Big Step, but at a fraction of the cost. Nice and weighty, too!.

It doesn’t have the fancy handle, or the imposing name but this bad boy won’t break the bank. Great design and comfortable in your palm. Save on the tamper, buy more beans. Simple.

This tamper has a very comfortable ‘fit-in-your-hand’ shape and lovely weight so hard pressing is not required. The size (48mm) is perfect or my 50mm basket. Cant live without it now.

Item is awesome in an advanced barista hands or someone with time to mind every tamp. I’ve used it and feels awesome. Although, I would add some weight into so it would have a better weight feel to it.

Excellent quality and does an amazing job. The spring tamp system is very satisfying to use. The tamp removes many variables so anyone in the family can do the perfect tamp.

I’m delighted with my tamper – so much better than the stock one that came with my Breville Dual Boiler machine. It has excellent heft, and makes getting a good tamp much quicker than it was with the very light stock one.

I opted for a convex bottom this time which I’m not sure I would do again – but that’s a personal preference thing, not related to the product! idrinkcoffee’s price was fair, as always, and their service/shipping time exemplary.

The tamp comes with a Cafelat silicone tamping seat which was a small but appreciable bonus. The 58. 5mm is a snug fit in all my 58mm baskets with my Gaggia Classic Pro and on none was it too tight. It helps a great deal making sure that one is level too and I really enjoy the tamping sensation in my hand and the precision of the pressure I’m applying using my tumb and index on the sides.

My coffee pucks have come out whole and compact and I have been improving my tamps a lot to the point where I don’t feel that I need anything else. Convex tamps, concentric circles, calibrated pressure all sound like nice features which I have tested on more expensive tamps than this one but I have felt like I made progression going with a flat base of 58.

5 mm. You don’t need a VST basket to appreciate it either, it works just as well in the IMS Baristapro baskets or the stock ones that came with the Gaggia Classic Pro.
