20 Best Tape For Painting (2022 Updated)

If you’ve ever needed a straight line while painting, you should not go without this! While you’re at it, pop on some Silverchair while you work. This stuff is amazing for cutting in while painting and isn’t too tacky that it damages a surface, but also bonds so well you don’t get bleed through…AND…did I mention how great Straight Lines are? The Silverchair song especially…it doesn’t tear when you remove it like that god awful yellow one also sold at the Bun.

Go the Scotch blue, you won’t regret it.

Received the FrogTape delicate surface painter’s tape-yellow 1. 41 in x 60 yd. the other day. Used it on a painting remodel I was working on. I like that it is made with PaintBlock technology which is a super-absorbent polymer that reacts with the water in latex paint and instantly gels to form a micro-barrier that seals the edges of the tape to prevent paint bleed.

I also like that it is designed to work on delicate surfaces such as fresh paint, wallpaper and decorative projects that is perfect for when you need a lower adhesion level to help prevent surface damage.

I actually used this on old wallpaper around the window frame I was painting. It was easy to apply and to remove and did a wonderful job of leaving a crisp, professional paint line without any bleed over on the wallpaper and did not damage the wallpaper when I removed it.

I will be buying more of this to use on the other windows and have already recommended it to friends and family. This is a great product. I do like that it is recommended for use on finished wood, fresh paint (dry to the touch) wallpaper, veneer, laminate, vinyl and drywall (primed only) and removes cleanly from most surfaces for up to 60 days.

I also like the tape canister for clean, protected storage.

his is for people who don’t paint much. I don’t have the time to learn how to cut-in (painter-speak for painting a straight line freehand), so I use this. It works. It takes a long time to apply. It’s a pain in the butt.

But it’s worth it if you want a straight line. You have to put it exactly where you don’t want paint to go. You MUST press it very firmly along the edge so that paint doesn’t bleed through. A finger with a short fingernail works well.

(Don’t expect any recent manicures to last long. ) If the surface you are pressing it on is freshly painted, you should wait for it to dry at least two days, preferably more, before you put the tape on.

You don’t want to ruin the paint you have already done! A couple of tips after reading other’s complaints. Do not overload your paint brush. More paint is not better. You only need enough on the brush to put a light layer on.

Let that dry for at least an hour and then paint a second light layer. Don’t jam the brush against the tape. If you do, you are more likely to break the barrier and the paint will bleed through. More importantly, I don’t care WHAT the label says.

DO NOT remove the tape until the paint has dried! JUST DON’T! And remove the tape carefully, pulling it off at a downward angle so that you don’t also pull off the dried paint. I hope this helps.

I was happy to get my FrogTape® Delicate Surface Painter’s Tape because I was looking to paint the frame around my air conditioner but I didn’t want to get pain on the AC or the wall next to it. There’s 60 yards of tape so there’s plenty of tape to use for a big job or multiple smaller ones.

I got the yellow tape but the color doesn’t really matter to me as long as it prevents paint from getting through or underneath it. After painting, the FrogTape peeled off nice and easily and no paint bled underneath it.

When I peeled up the tape, it left a professional looking paint job. I don’t think anyone will be able to tell that I didn’t have a professional painter come in. The tape seems to be made well, with quality materials and a special Paint Block technology that worked when I did my project.

I would definitely recommend the FrogTape® Delicate Surface Painter’s Tape and I will be purchasing it for my future painting projects.

I really love scotch brand but ended up getting the knock off version of blue tape first when I began painting. It was a nightmare! The tape would not stick and paint was going through it. I went back and got the scotch version and it eliminated all those problems! This tape actually sticks to the wall and holds up when you’re painting.

I posted a picture of the wall I painted with the tape. Do yourself a favor and don’t bother off brand. You will just end up cursing and going back to the store for this tape instead.

Recently purchased this tape. Spent 2 hours applying tape to wood moulding the night before the painting was to begin. Even prepped the wood prior to applying the tape according to instructions on the 3m website.

On the morning the painting was to begin, I discovered about 90% of the tape had peeled off. What a waste of time, energy and money. This time I purchased the original blue tape and started the process all over.

Would not recommend to purchase the Scotchblue ultra sharp lines tape.

Similar experience to the review from “K Paul”. I had purchased this tape to keep paint off of my stained wood crown moulding and baseboards. Applied it last night so that I could get up this morning and paint.

I woke up to find half of it had fallen off of the crown moulding, and that the edges had lifted off of the baseboards. I had even gone to the trouble of pressing and smoothing all of the tape onto the wood to make sure that it has adhered well.

Yes – the surface was clean before application. Maybe this “plastic” tape is better suited for smooth flat painted surfaces. It is definitely not well suited for angled edges. I’m going back to the original blue tape.

This was disappointing.

I just painted my bedroom and used this tape. It works great! I have a lot of trim in my bedroom so I have to have a good quality tape. I love Duck brand tape. This tape didn’t let any paint behind it so I didn’t have to worry about scrubbing all the paint off my trim like I’ve had to do with other brands.

It took me two days to finish the painting and the tape peeled off easily and didn’t leave any sticky residue behind. The tape came off the roll with no problems and was very easy to tear off when I came to the end of a trim board.

This is really nice quality tape.

This Duck Professional Painter’s Tape is great. This was my first time using painters tape. I used it to cover and protect the wood trim and baseboards while painting my bedroom walls. The rubber-based adhesive worked very well.

I was happy that no paint bled through. The removal was easy. It can also be used on ceramic, metal, glass, carpet and vinyl. I would recommend this painters tape.

I am not a professional painter so I need all the help I can get when it comes to painting a room. This Duck painters tape works great. I was able to tape off everything I needed to and when I was done painting the room, the tape peeled off easily and left very clean lines.

There wasn’t any bleed through and the tape didn’t leave any residue behind. I’m glad it came in a pack of six because the room turned out so well i will be ready to tackle a few more rooms now. Great product.

This tape sticks SO MUCH BETTER than the thicker colored tapes one usually buys. I use it on my watercolor paper to tack it down and make margins. IT STAYS PUT so my pain! doesn’t get under the tape! the colored ones lifted up so easily and I had used it for decades.

Then i saw a tutorial from an artist I like because she’s very particular about supplies and saw her using it so I bought it from Dickblicks. comandit worked out beautifully!.

Does exactly what its supposed to plus more. I do a lot of my drawings on paper then trace onto canvas however painters tape, scotch tape, and other tapes would always lack on either the canvas or the paper.

This works perfectly on both the canvas and the paper. The length is rather short for the price and becaus i use various drawings per canvas i typically go through a half a roll for one piece.

I have used this tape on everything-not just painting- when I didn’t need it to be permanent. I have even used it as a name tape on a water bottle sent to school. My daughter loaded the bottle into the dishwasher with the tape still attached.

The tape and name looked brand new and didn’t mess up the bottle. I highly recommend this tape as a household staple.

I’m very happy with the results. This tape worked great for me. I had no issues with paint bleeding through at all and it gave me very crisp lines after removal. Those of you that are having this problem, make sure you’re really pressing the tape down and go over it with some sort of putty tool or something like that to make sure it seals.

As for it removing paint/stain, it does say on the container that there are certain surfaces you can’t use it on and that it must be removed immediately after painting and reapplied between coats. If you follow the directions, I don’t think you’ll run into any problems.

Purchased to cover new walls. These were plastered last year, mist coated and then two coats of dulux. masked walls so we could varnish oak skirting. Decided to spend the money on this product instead of masking tape.

HAS PULLED OFF LOADS OF PAINT. Now have to pay decorator an extra days work £180 to rectify. may even have to re-skim some walls othewise paint will have dips in it where there’s different layers. AVOID!.

Bought this as fed up of using cheap products and getting cheap results. Read the label and noted that paint must be cured to avoid damage. Left the walls 2 weeks before masking off to paint new coving.

Destroyed the paintwork. Massive patches pulled away meaning that gaps in paintwork now needs to be skimmed with filler and repainted. Going to stick to working by hand. Utter waste of money, time and effort.

Had high hopes for this tape. It was easy to work with and loved the clean tear feature. However, it is advertised as clean removal for up to 7 days. Today was day 5 and as I removed the tape part of the adhesive remained on the areas I was trying to protect.

Now I will have to spend extra time on the project and come up with a way to remove the adhesive without damage. Not sure I can recommend this to anyone that needed to leave it on more than a couple of days.

I bought this tape for painting our back patio after reading that it sticks on with moisture. Here in Florida we have a lot of humidity. Not only that, we started to paint and we couldn’t finish because of an afternoon rain storm.

We started back up the next morning and were surprised to find the tape sticking everywhere we applied it the previous day. When we finished up that morning, we were totally shocked to see that none of the paint we applied both days had gone under the tape.

Now that’s great sticking tape!!.

This tape is horrendous to use and doesn’t work. Don’t buy it!!! First, it doesn’t tear properly and requires the use of scissors. Secondly, curls in all directions (lengthwise AND width). These issues make it very difficult to position accurately.

Thirdly, it doesn’t work! After 10 minutes, it was peeling itself off my skirting. I do not understand why this product exists.

I’ve been doing a lot of my own painting and used various painter’s tape brands. I noticed if I was taping up the trim to paint a wall, then most of the brands I used worked fine and peeled off easily.

However when I used a nice blue tape brand to tape the wall in order to paint the trim, it failed to peel off cleanly and I had to carefully use various methods to pull off slivers of tape left behind.

Based upon reviews for this issue, I decided to use this brand to tape off the rest of the wall from the trim I was painting. It has peeled off wonderfully so far. This one is a little more expensive but it has been worth it for this project.

I will continue to use the other less expensive brands, as well as this one, but each will have their purpose. If there is doubt about whether the tape will cause an issue, then I will use this one.

First time I used this product and couldn’t be happier. It worked better than that “blue tape” and resulted in clean lines with no bleeding between baseboard, molding and ceiling after I painted the walls.

Harbor Freight had the best price in town!.

We are painting an entire house, installed new drywall throughout. This tape is a great time saver and keeps ultra straight lines with no underlaying seepage. Not quite finished with the project but will use this for the rest of my project.

Every time I take on a painting project I always grab my frog tape! It’s durable and does exactly what it says it will do! Love using it!

I love Frog tape because its adhesiveness bonds to all surfaces I work with. The Frog tape Blue bonds to wood baseboards, wallpaper, metal, plastic, stone and yes the rubber molding baseboards found in offices, churches and some residential areas.

In the 40 years I’ve been painting residential homes, commercial businesses and Dr. offices, I am blessed to learn of this product! The “other” Blue tape I have used does not adhere to the rubber molding and that incurs more time in cleaning up.

I used this tape to paint stripes on my daughter’s wall. The tape rarely stuck to the wall without supporting it from the ceiling or from the baseboards. I had to make sure I pressed the tape down before painting over it on every line.

Often I would get paint on the tape and it would curl up and ruin the lines I was making. It made the job much more difficult and it would have been easier to just use regular painter’s tape. As long as you did everything just right it would leave a good looking line and did its job.

Great product! This REALLY IS worth the extra cost over the regular blue stuff IF you are painting onto it. It really does give a much better edge when you peel it off. It IS NOT a gimmick, it really does work better.

A few tips, make sure you prep and clean the walls / surfaces well before putting the tape on, it does help. Make sure you press the tape down well to get a good seal, particularly along the edge where you are going to be painting onto.

If it isn’t adhered well, you can still get runs. Use a straight edge and box cutter or exact-o knife to cut clean corners and edges on the wall, tearing and folding it will not give you a good edge.

It’s the little details that make a difference when painting. Also, make sure you remove the tape before the final coat is completely dry, peel it when its around 80%. You can do multiple coats, as long as you do them within a day or two and peel it off while the final coat is still drying.

Waiting a week will not give good results, trust me. Lastly, you should STILL buy a cheap roll of the blue stuff, you inevitably will need to tape something that you are not going to paint over and you don’t want to use the expensive stuff to tape drop cloths or paper to the floors, etc.

It is at least twice the cost of the regular painters tape, so only use your good roll for cutting edges, use the cheap stuff for everything else.

My go to tape for painting. In the process now of repainting another house. The instructions say the protective gel will react and expand to the paint. This seemed a little like closing the barn door after the horse has left but, I followed those instructions in the beginning and there was some seepage.

So now, when applying the tape, I use a new small sponge (straight out of package – no wetting). New sponges are very pliable (not dried up and stiff) to press in the tape edge closest to side to be painted.

This improves of the ever present divots in drywall. Then, just before painting, I lightly run a damp (not wet) cloth along the tape edge against the area being painted to expand the gel. No need to damp the whole tape (and not recommended as it could cause issues).

This has given me perfect lines every time. Don’t forget to remove tape while paint is still wet.

When we decided to refresh our store with some new paint, we needed some painter’s tape. The tape in the hardware store was expensive, so I looked for a cheaper option. I found this 1″ painters tape, and decided to order it.

I have not been disappointed. It has held up to our painting, and stayed on the walls until we wanted to pull it off. It made nice lines and didn’t stick to the new paint. I would recommend it to anyone starting a painting project!.

This roll of masking tape by shurtape is a nice quality painting tape. Has an eight day release meaning you can leave it on until your paint is dry and you shouldn’t have any trouble getting it off. Great for masking off areas you want to protect.

The green painter’s tape was a huge find when we remodeled our business. The tape went on easily and helped us paint in professionally. When we were done the tape came right off. A great product.

I have yet to find a tape that can be manipulated and make smooth curved lines. I used while painting with acrylics. I went to multiple stores looking for this stuff, and finally found it at Joan’s, thanks Joan! It is definitely time consuming but worth it.

At first I didn’t varnish the tape enough, which caused some paint bleed. Then I got worried so I rubbed that tape down like no body’s business, and caused the illustration boards first layer to tear.

Therefore after some trial and air, a perfect mid-ground of varnishing the tape with your finger nail works great, no bleeding or tearing. I do wish it was thicker in width (to cover more area, but it’s possible that it could not curve as well in small areas if it was thicker? I’m not sure, that’s just my assumption.

It’s great tape for small curved areas when painting! I do recommend, the scotch curved tape does exactly what it advertised.

Read the description and reviews. Bought it. Tried it today on my Canson All Media sketchbook (90 lb. cold press watercolor paper). It was on maybe a couple hours. Tore the paper when I tried to remove it.

It obviously has some uses, but on paper is not one of them. Wish the description and other reviews had mentioned NOT to use it on paper–and this is paper that takes gesso, glue, watercolor–not cheap flimsy stuff.

This tape can create a tight curve by lightly stretching the tape as it is pressed onto the tubular surfaces of the frame, providing that the surface is clean and at room temperature. For creating linear curves and striping this is the best product out there in my opinion, especially when considering the speed at which you can work with it.

The capacity for this tape to stretch requires a somewhat delicate touch as it can quickly elongate and then the line is lost. It then must be patched in with a second piece or entirely removed and the line done over again.

A definate five stars on this product from my experience with it.
