20 Best Teleconverter For Canon (2022 Updated)

The Canon Extender RF1. 4x is great. It is light weight and when on a lens it actually lengthens the lens less than my old EF version. The image quality of the photos with it seems better than the EF version to me and I never had an issue with the EF 1.

4x on my EF 100-400mm L ii. I mainly bought this to use on my new RF 100-400mm in order to extend my range to 560mm. But it also works well on my RF 800mm F11, giving me a whopping 1120mm. So now I have a lighter, smaller zoom with amazing minimal focus distance and over full zoom range for small birds that are close to me and my 800/1120mm for larger birds or birds at more distance.

The combination of these three pieces gives me amazing flexibility, less weight and less room in my pack. It’s true that at dawn and dusk I’ve given up some light-gathering ability, but honestly, I don’t shoot then most of the time any more.

I couldn’t be happier with the Extender RF1. 4x using my R6. It pretty much stays on my 100-400mm most of the time. It’s given me a lot of flexibility for minimal cost and great weight/space savings.

I’ve had mixed luck with teleconverters in the past. Some were decent and some not good at all. I am using this with a Sony FE 200-600mm lens and the results are outstanding, very sharp. In addition to using it while out and about I did some tests in the house at nearly 600mm (I moved the zoom ring a little by accident before starting the tests) with and without the converter.

I shot a test chart at about 25 feet from the camera. When the test shots were viewed at the same image size (the chart was the same size on the screen) the images with the converter were just a bit sharper and of course were of higher resolution.

Essentially the increased magnification more than made up for any very slight degradation of IQ. I did the test shots with the converter both wide open and stopped down one stop. I used the same f/stops for the shots without the converter.

If anything this gave a slight advantage to the non-converter shots. In any case there was little difference between the shots at the two f-stops. Well worth the cost when you get can’t get close enough to your subject.

Highly recommended. I should also mention that the FE 200-600mm is excellent in its own right. Very sharp even wide open and easy to handle. It does not extend while zooming which is nice.

The Canon Extender EF 1. 4X III is an excellent piece if equipment. Tack sharp when used with a tack sharp lens. Virtually no degrade of image sharpness is apparent. I use it primarily on an original 600mm Is Canon lens and the 100-400mm IS II, both lenses are stay super sharp with this Tele Extender.

And it allows focus point selection on the newer lens, which the prior model does not. The bundle is adequate but somewhat simple and I probably won’t use most of it but it is good for a starter kit.

Tested this TC by taking images of the same subject with and without it on a 100-400 then cropping each to the same framing. There will be at least a slight loss of image quality with ANY TC, just because you’re adding more glass elements, but this can be off-set by putting more pixels on target.

A high quality TC will result in a better image when zoomed in/cropped; a poor TC will make the final result worse. This is a good one.

work great on auto(A). buyer need to realized when you are using this teleconverter works best on auto mode not manual. on a manual mode you are the one who set ISO, Aperture not camera. on manual mode, if you move from one spot to another spot or move the camera, you have to reset all setting(ISO, Aperture, etc other wise you are NOT going to get the shot you are looking for.

way I see it, if you want to get best possible shot leave the setting on auto, make focus adjustments and start clicking away.

Very sharp pictures. I used it with my 80-300 zoom lens 10.2 mp Sony camera. At max zoom pictures are very crisp. At that focal length though the AF doesn’t work well but on manual it’s great.

It’s a waste of money. No communication to camera at all even if you use manual, result is always over exposed. Stay away with this.

The teleconverter arrived quickly and was packaged very well. It has a good feel and not very flimsy. I originally purchased the teleconverter to use with my Canon T6i and Canon 70-300, but haven’t had the opportunity to use it yet.

I did take a few indoor pictures with my Sigma 18-200 and was pleasantly surprised to find that the auto focus worked properly when it was zoomed at 200. I had the camera in Av mode – f11. It did seem little slow to focus on darker areas using only the center focus dot, but did well in lighter areas.

Looking forward to more use as the weather gets a little warmer.

This is a very light weight and sharp teleconverter for the price. On my 5D4 this converter gives my EF 70-300 IS II the same reach and sharpness as my Sigma 100-400 C with 13 oz less weight. However, the same lens + teleconverter does not work on my 90D or M6II, the lens does not power up.

Both those cameras can use lenses like the 55-250 STM and Sigma. The teleconverter does slow AF, most noticeably on STM lenses, and there is some image degradation over the bare lens as expected.

This teleconverter is doing the job. Tried it on Sigma and Canon L Lens prime and telephoto. I can’t ask much more for such a small investment. Both Canon 7d original and the 90d without issues. By the way, fast and no charge shipping to Canada.

This teleconverter allows you to increase x2 times the focal length of your lens. I purchased the Nikon mount variation, as I am a Nikon user. The image quality is no better than the lens quality you are using it with.

That is, you will not notice much loss on the image quality, but you will double the f/stops your lens is capable of. Example: In my case, an f/4 to 5. 6 55-200mm lens was used, the teleconverter went from f/8 to 11 and focal length was doubled 110-400mm.

The f/ stops lost are the trade off. Also, please note you must visit Kenko’s website in order to check if your lens will be compatible. In most cases, the teleconverter coupled with the lens will work fine in manual focus mode, so this unit is not very indicated if you are expecting quick shots on wildlife, sports or spotting.

On static or slow moving subjects it will be best suited for the combination. I have used this for spotting aircraft and am happy with it.

I found this item used for a good price. While not a genuine Nikon, it works better than a Nikon for me, because a Nikon teleconverter will not allow autofocus with the older “screw drive” lenses, and the Kenko teleconverter does.

Also, the glass in a Nikon teleconverter gets in the way of being attached to certain (most) Nikon lenses, and this has attached to each of mine. It may be that a Nikon would be sharper or more durable, but this hasn’t broken for me, and I haven’t used it enough nor been expert enough to notice that this isn’t sharp.

I received this today. Nicely packed, well protected with lots of bubble wrap etc. Original box with easy to understand short instruction booklet. I was a little skeptical whether or not this would work on my Nikor 55-300mm AF telephoto lens but when I tried it I had no real issue getting it ro work fine.

Even the AF worked, but it did take a few seconds to get the focus right, and on a couple of shots I simply went to manual focus. no problem. The Nikon Vibration Reduction still works 100%, and I have only noticed a slight segregation in picture quality and brightness, but I am sure with a little adjustments to iso and whatever else my new D3300 can do the pics will be fine.

All up, I am happy with this product. I tried it today on a few very distant television towers onto of mountains and it certainly brought them closer than without it. Since spending thousands on a 600mm lens is beyond me this made a great compromise 🙂 Happy customer.

I used this with a Sigma 60-600 lens on a Blackmagic Pocket 4K. The teleconverter prevents the autofocus from working correctly. I don’t know if I should blame the teleconverter, the lens, or the camera for that, but regardless, it doesn’t work.

Also, the built-in lens stabilization goes wonky. I thought it was bad lens. It took me weeks to finally realize it was the teleconverter that was screwing up the stabilization. I used this mostly for video, which is bit more forgiving than photography in terms of sharpness.

Even so, I found it too soft. I haven’t checked, but you might actually get better results used an AI scaling tool like Topaz Labs Gigapixel AI instead of using this converter. I cannot recommend this equipment.

The lens arrived on time and as advertised. The accessories that were supposed to be included in the bundle did not arrive with the lens. I contacted Walmart Customer Service and they found that the seller had shipped the accessories in a separate shipment.

I finally got all the pieces. The bundle included a monopod with quick release. The monopod I received has a 1/4″ screw fitting. The Sigma 150-600mm lens requires a 3/8″ fitting to connect with the monopod.

So, I cannot use the monopod without purchasing an extra bushing to screw onto the 1/4″ fitting. The Sigma lens is also heavy. The monopod had no paperwork with it to indicate the load rating. Looking at the monopod, it does not appear to be able to support this lens and a camera.

I do not understand why Walmart would include this monopod in the bundle with this lens.

I wanted a lens to capture wildlife, and this lens certainly delivers. I received it in good time, it was well-packaged, and even though it was a used lens, it looked brand new. The UV filter and lens hood came with the lens, and altogether I saved at least $100 compared to buying it brand new.

The lens functions perfectly. Since it was a used lens, it came with no instruction manual, but after a few Google searches, I was able to use the optical image stabilization and the autofocus with greater facility.

It is a fairly straightforward lens to use, and it works seamlessly with my Canon 77D. Needless to say, I am very pleased with my purchase, and I can already see how the lens is improving my shots.

I’ve had the EF Extender 2x III in the past, and used it rarely as it had a pretty major impact on image quality, generally adding a hazy, soft focus effect to most photos. This RF 2x, used with the RF 100-500mm, was amazingly good! Yes, there is some (very) minor loss of contrast, but that was easily corrected during processing with a very minor bump to the clarity or haze slider in Lightroom, or just a slight curves adjustment.

What really impressed me was the amount of detail in the images – even at 1000mm f/14. Wow, what can I say, I was not expecting this to be the case. It’s not as good as the 1. 4x extender, but it’s not much different.

It does impact focus speed, slowing it just a tad, but I could still track birds in flight. While this is not something I would have on my camera all the time, it definitely has it’s place in my bag for those times I need just a little bit more reach.

I will be purchasing this extender at some point, of that I’m certain. Highly recommended.

I have the Canon RF 100-400 mm L lens as well as a 1. 4X Canon extender. I was concerned with the image quality I would obtain with a 2X extender, but after seeing multiple images from colleagues, I decided to buy one.

WOW!!! This doubler provides very sharp images while preserving a very quick autofocus. I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to a friend. The only caveat with this lens is the limitation of the zoom range from 300 to 500 on the lens due to the protrusion of the extender in the lens (true for the 1.

4X and the 2X extenders).

I had the Canon R6 and RP. I tried the converter with 4 lenses. First, it doesn’t work with the 24-100 or 100-500, so that was disappointing. It’s expensive to only work w telephoto lenses. I felt the images w the 600 mm were better than with the 800 mm.

I felt the images with my Nikon p900 were equal to the teleconverted Canon 800 mm. It just wasn’t the quality I’d hoped for at over $1500 for the combination. I’m going to try the 1. 4, but I just wasn’t happy w the 2x.

Maybe other conditions would change my mind, but it’s a heavy lens to carry for minor improvements in range. I shot in the woods and along a river on an overcast day. I also shot some swans at the ocean on a clear and sunny day.

It just didn’t meet my expectations. I wanted it to be amazing. Sadly it fell short.

My setup for this review is: Sony A77V & Sony A77m2 + Sigma 500Ex, Sigma 50-500, Sigma 18-250 Also, to clarify: I have used Kenko’s MC4 x1. 4 for the past year in the following setup: A77m2+Sigma 500Ex +Kenko x1.

4, with good resuts. x2 Converters are known to be problematic, and this one unfortunately is no exeption. Kenko made the best effort yet (that I’ve seen) to supply a usefull product. It is the first converter that can be mounted mechanically on all 3 lenses, no problem.

It also carries through the AF, but here it where it fails!! Using the different setups, applicable to the 3 lenses and 2 bodies, only ONE combination seemed to work, and precariously at best which was the Sony A77m2+Sigma 500Ex + Kenko x2.

It gave me once or twice a good enough focus, but otherwise it missed spectacularly. Manually, It gave sharp and crispy images, but who buys the keknko to keep using MF? All in all, I put it in storage, because I cannot use it for my purposes.

Build quality is nice, but not robust ebough for my taste, seeing as it has to withstand emense shearing forces from the lense (~ 3. 5 Kg) and body (~ 1 Kg), and sometimes it absorbs the brunt of an inadvert bump into the steering wheel, when seeking wildlife, or even a full-on effect of hiking conditions, where the accessability of the phot subject is not that great.

The use of duralum (Copper hardened Aluminum) instead of plastic for the construction would be advantageous. I hope Kenko continues to improve on its products.

I wanted something to give me a little more reach. After reading the product description, I decided to try the Kenko Tokina AF converter. I coupled it to my 28-75 2. 8 walk around lens. I was delightly surprised at the reach and quality of the TC.

It gave me a nice extra reach when I wanted it. I used it for a few Birds in flight with excellent results. I also used it to photograph birds on the ground and in trees and was happy with the quality of the product.

I don’t know about other products as this is my first TC, but, I did not see any significant loss in f-stops. My photos are good in my opinion and I would recommend this product and would purchase it again.

Though I did not see any significant loss in f-stop, realize that any kind of glass placed in front of a lens may / or will affect glass quality to some extent. I am very pleased with the results of this TC.

I have been unemployed for more than a half year, and was truly hoping for a less expensive tool to help extend the zoom capability of my Canon lenses. This Kenko Teleconverter is a waste of 100 dollars.

I don’t think I have ever been more disappointed by something I have spent a hundred dollars on. Being in a position of zero income, I used precious dollars to expand my photographic capabilities, and was taken advantage of by shoddy craftsmanship, and a company that appears to be non too concerned with delivering less than satisfactory products.

The Canon 2X III Extender is an excellent piece of kit, provided you know what it does, know the drawbacks, and know where and when to use it. The Good: It doubles the focal length of the lens you use it with.

Yes, that 400 becomes an 800. The Bad: Yes, it slightly (and I do emphasize slightly) reduces image quality and sharpness. However, for the price, where else are you going to find a 400mm or an 800mm piece of glace to compete with this 2X? With a 70-200, or a large prime lens, the addon cost of this extender is very reasonable for the focal length it gives you.

The Ugly: You lose two stops of light. So if you put it on a f/2. 8 and it becomes an f/5. 6. Put it on an f/4 and it becomes an f/8. Also: this extender does NOT work with just ANY lens. The docking collars are specific, and it means that many lenses will not work with this extender.

Most of the lenses that will physically interconnect will work just fine–the autofocus and the image stabilization will still work. I have used a 2X III Extender on a 400mm f/2. 8L II IS, and a 70-200 f/2.

8L II IS, and I am very impressed with the quality. Yes, it’s not at sharp as just the lens. But I have shot polo sports and a lunar eclipse with these aforementioned lenses and I was very pleased with the pixel peeping I did later.

Just understand what this is, what it does to your lens and image, and make sure you research whether or not it will work on your lens / body combo, and you’ll have a much more realistic idea about what this extender can do for you.

Works quite well with Canon super telephoto lenses. I use this with a Canon 300mm f/2. 8 Mk. I, and while there’s a huge hit in AF performance, sharpness is still there and the image degradation is minimal to nonexistent with virtually no CA.

In situations with a lot of light (and a sturdy tripod), you’d be hard pressed at telling the difference between this and the 1. 4x teleconverter which also works extremely well. The AF would also likely fare better in the high light situations as well.

Also, if you’re into AP, I managed to see Jupiter and Saturn’s ring with this thing so yes it does work well!.

Very nearly as sharp as the 70-200 2. 8 IS II without the extender, though just a tough soft wide open at infinity. Doubles the focal length but does not affect the lens’ minimum focus distance, so even useful for some light macro work.

Fast enough focusing to catch birds in flight. Quick and easy to attach and detach. It does throw the weight a bit to the rear when rig is mounted on tripod with lens collar, so lock it in tight or upgrade your head.

Not really suitable for freehand shooting. Do keep in mind that doubling your focal length requires a faster shot to avoid motion blur. Bottom line: it beats shelling out for a longer L lens.

Great build quality, good product. You can also adapt it and use it with all your old EF lenses with some DIY. I use it with my old EF 70-300mm (140-600 with this adapter) and EF 100mm macro (200mm with this adapter) on my R5.

Autofocus works well and IS also. You lose some clarity and sharpness as with all extenders, but if you have some old EF lenses and want to use them, you can do it with with this extender+cheap RF to EF adapter wits some “dirty” “DIY.

I use it in this combination: EOS R5 + Canon RF 2X + modified RF to EF adapter (Comlite RF to EF) + lens. Comunication and Autofocus and IS all works well with my EF lenses. You may save some money and use your old lenses.

for best results you may buy RF 100-500mm but it cost quite 3000 Fr. – and with this extender it became 600-1000mm, great range for extreme wild life. here to help if you have questions on how to do it.

Another outstanding product from SIGMA, if you want to increase your ability to see things that the standard telephoto lens doesn’t reach, this is for you. Well built, doesn’t take up a lot of room in your bag and doubles your abilities.

Of course you have to take in effect your sensor size. Crop sensor sizes for Canon is x1. 6 and Nikon is x1. 5 So that being said the easiest way to look at it is this. A 100 mm lens fitted to a crop sensor on a Canon is 160 mm, and the Nikon is 150 mm.

Now add this adapter and you can see it has it advantages even if you lose an F stop or 2. Canon lens now becomes a 320 mm and Nikon a 300 mm. This can also be used for Macro work, just put an extension tube on the body and then the adapter and bingo, Macro world without having to get macro lens.

First impressions good, solid feel and compact. Seemed a good companion for 70-200 class lenses to add a little reach with out carrying another lens. Note that it has a raised front lens assembly so won’t fit many lenses where the rear lens is close to or flush with the rear mount.

Unfortunately failed after 5 weeks without any real use. (Aperture reports 00 and err1 when body triggered. ) Now back with supplier for investigation/repair so wouldn’t recommend at the moment and only 3 stars.

But have high hopes when returned.

The converter works perfectly with my Sigma 70-200 2,8. The loss of aperture stops was expected, however the focusing had no problems. Considering the price it is clear that a converter can never substitute an appropriate lens but in most cases it is a good alternative.

The delivery of the converter was a little bit delayed, nevertheless it arrived save and the packaging was perfect.

I had been using a Canon 2x III Extender with my Sigma 120-300 2. 8 OS (Also from Adorama) mounted on a Canon 7d for about about ten months and was never really completely satisfied with the sharpness of my shots.

The sharpness didn’t compare with the shots that another photographer, who used the same lens, produced. He wrote that he used a Sigma 2x teleconverter with the Sigma zoom lens. I decided to buy a Sigma 2x to see if it would make a difference.

Shortly after I received it I tested it against the Canon 2x III. What I found was that shots with the Sigma 120-300 f2. 8 OS combined with the less expensive Sigma 2x was noticeably sharper than the Canon 2x.

I believe I’ve found a winning combination.

This extender is great for use with the Sigma EX 120-300mm f2. 8-OS-HSM, it does not degrade the image or alter the AF. I use it only on digital cameras with Sigma lenses. I personally believe it works better on the Sigmas than the Canon 2xIII.

I also used it with the Sigma EX 70-200mmf2. 8 OS and the Sigma 100-300/4 EX HSM with good results. It is very rare that a 2X TC behave like this, but on the 120-300/2. 8, it is a must.

I recently purchased this teleconverter along with SIGMA’S 70-200 f2. 8 OS lens and am very pleased with the added reach. Buy using them together, I have the flexibility of doubling my focal range to 140-400mm while maintaining a f-stop of 5.

6 and the tack sharpness and consistent focus I am accustomed to. It’s nice to have flexibility without carrying a second lens for those distant shots! (Please select this teleconverter carefully, as it does not work with all SIGMA lenses).

As a pixel peeper I didn’t expect much out of this 1. 4X extender, but after my ist day of shooting birds-in-flight I was pleasantly surprised with the results. I use it primarily with the Canon 100-400mm II lens to bring it close to the long end of my Sigma 150-600mm Sports lens (560mm vs 600mm).

Now I always have the extender on that lens when I use it in the wild. Is the 100-400mm sharper without it. Maybe, but if so, not too, too much. I was equally surprised with the AF performance. Is it as fast or versatile as the naked 100-400mm – NO! Is it acceptable – Yes, and with practice it can be awesome.

With the Canon lens I mention hear I seem to get all of my focusing points, but in reality, even though it looks like they are all working, and they will grab a focus, they do not lock on perfectly. so you will get a lot of soft images using anything but the center focusing points.

As advertised, its not as fast, but it is surprisingly fast compared to what I expected. Surprisingly! Another thing worth mentioning is that it is Super easy to manually focus my combination. Ive shot dragon flies from 10′ perched on a dancing weed on a windy day and got excellent results, as well as birds-in-flight.

Yes, the experience of the photographer comes into play, but if you need that extra reach, this extender will give it to you, and with great results if you learn how to work with it.

I’ve used Canon 1. 4x II extenders with my L series lenses for about 15 years. They’ve delivered everything you’d expect from Canon’s pro line lenses. After reading reviews of the type III, I decided to buy a 1.

4x III to pair with my 100-400mm ISII lens. On receiving it, I shot some test photos under controlled conditions with the 100-400mm/1. 4x II and 100-400mm/1. 4x III combos. While both were very good, there was a noticeable difference in sharpness with the 1.

4x III. If you have an ISII L-series lens, and you’re interested in adding some versatility to your kit in a relatively inexpensive, compact and lightweight package, you should definitely consider this.

The new mark iii 1. 4x teleconverter is head and shoulders above the previous versions. I did some systematic test shots of a Coke can, two at 400mm and two at 300mm, with my new Canon 100-400mm mark ii lens and there was virtually ZERO difference between the shots with vs without the 1.

4 – it was impressive! I’ll let you decide which ones are which. I showed a friend the shots and he couldn’t pick the ones taken with the 1. 4 vs without. IF there is a difference, you must have done some scientific study.

That or its nothing a little post sharpening wont fix in short order. Auto focus works just fine. Its a TAD BIT slower with the converter, but not that you’d ever really notice. It is still pretty fast.

And you only get f8 at 400mm. Cant go any bigger. If you want f7. 1 then you gotta zoom back to around 300mm. this may or may not depend on what lens you are using as well. I recommend this unit to anyone looking to get more reach without looking to break the bank.

I see virtually no image degradation across several focal lengths and several fstops. I paid 380 for mine brand new. A used one would be an even better deal. The Coke can images were untouched. Other than cropping them to size and putting the 4 of them together into one image.

NO editing was done to any of them. They areall straight out of the camera.
