20 Best Telescopes For Kids (2022 Updated)

This is a good ‘scope for the money. It is a full length real Newtonian, with full equatorial mount, fine-adjustment knobs and all. It’s not the most solid mount I’ve seen, but adequate, given the (light) weight / small size (4 inch — that’s small for me).

It does take patience an some understanding of how the earth turns to use the mount right, but once you do, it’s worth it, for tracking at high magnification. The ‘scope has way more light and clarity and magnification than other ‘scopes in this price range.

I got this for a beginner, but it’s not just a toy — you can see some serious space objects out there. The finder scope is sharp, but the mount for it is not really stable — you have to be more careful than most people are.

I may just put tabs on the top and bottom of the main tube, or figure out how to really secure the finder more tightly. I’m happy with this purchase.

Plastic EPs, flaky mount, quality too poor for anyone to grow into a learning experience. I know that bottom end purchases in astronomy are not the best but this scope really scoured the bottom and for an experienced observer trying to school two boys on the joys of observing the stars this scope came up empty.

It should not be sold at any price no matter how low. Why didn’t I return it? I had it sent to folks who lived literally a thousand miles away. And they decided that I should be the one to open it for their kids since I was scheduled for a visit and had experience in observing, they didn’t.

It was a visit that was past the returns allowable date. Solution: I’m giving them them one of own my scopes on my next visit that is not a Celestron (not my first Celestron experience. ) but another branded combo.

This scope is ok the eyepieces are ok and are usable but I recommend upgrading the eyepieces. I saw the moon with it. It was excellent and the Orion nebula was ok. The finder is plastic but works well.

And it has a Bird-Jones focuser and a spherical primary mirror. But that has not affected the view. I recommend it for a person who is confident in polar alignment for a beginner who does not know anything not so much.

Polar alignment might be a pain like most equatorial mount telescopes. But overall it is good also this telescope has shown me more objects than my other scope, a 70mm refractor.

When the item arrived, I wasn’t sure who was more excited for this item – my husband, or my kids! When we opened the box, I was impressed with the quality of the construction of this telescope. It came with several pieces, so I would encourage this item for more responsible kids.

I think, based on how this item looked initially, everyone in our family had very high expectations. It was difficult to see or find objects with the telescope. This could be due to inexperienced operators.

However, what we could see was really fun. For the price of this item, it is a fair value. I think with more experience, we will be able to see more. I think this is a great gift to provide family involvement.

A sturdy product that my 8 year old grandson loves now that we have put it all together. I have only given it 4 stars because it took 2 adults quite a while to get all the parts in place. I can see no reason why this telescope could not have been sent out complete with no self assembly required except for perhaps connection to the tripod.

It should also have been made clear on the box that you cannot see anything through the telescope unless you are focusing on something at a great distance.

Having been in astronomy since 2018 I have various Telescopes like the Orion GoScope III Telescope and the Celestron Travel Scope 70 Telescope and the Celestron First Scope. I am going to save my money and buy the Orion Fun Scope 76 mm Table Top Reflector Telescope.

By buying this Telescope from Orion I believe it will be excellent addition to all my other Telescopes. And I also believe that by having this particular Telescope I will enjoy using it.

We gave this telescope to our 5 year old grandson for his birthday. He loves everything to do with outer space and is thrilled with his new telescope. Being that he is only 5, his dad sets it up for him.

Once he’s older it will be easy for him to use. They told me they recently looked at the full moon and he was excited to see it up close. It’s a great telescope to begin exploring space and he will have years of fun.

Having received my Orion Funscope about a week ago I, at the tender age of 66, for the very first time, saw some stars while looking through my own telescope, the inexpensive but very capable Orion FunScope! I saw what I think was Merak in the Big Dipper.

It looked small, but bright and clear. It twinkled and danced nicely. When I looked at it out of focus, the center was black and the outer part was a circle with dancing dots that was really quite beautiful: I’m guessing that it had to do with the atmosphere.

It was a very very windy night with the clouds swirling and obscuring the stars and moon from time to time and then moving on to reveal stars and moon once again. I used both the 20mm and 10mm eyepiece for viewing this star and the moon, which were very very easy to locate with the scope by using the red dot finder.

The moon also looked great with both eyepieces. Unfortunately, though I live miles from a city, my neighbor has THREE bright streetlights on his property so there was a good deal of light pollution. Nonetheless it was great fun walking all over my front and back yards with my little scope on a firm tripod and beginning the initial process of learning a tiny bit about the night sky.

I think starting with something this portable and easy to move around is a great way to get started!.

I have the Celestorn First Scope and I after using other Telescopes I found that the Celestron First Scope is easier to use. The Telescope is very easy to use, I have a piece of wood that is flat and hard and I put it on my Tray Table.

I just put the Celestron First Scope on the piece of wood and then I put it on my Tray Table. I just put an Eyepiece in the focuser and then I start focusing it and I saw the stars and star Constellations.

I used an H 20mm and then an H12. 5mm Eyepieces. I didn’t yet use my SR 4mm or my H 6mm Eyepieces yet. I also bought a Celestron First Scope Accessory Kit and it has two eyepieces a H12. 5mm and a H6mm Eyepieces plus a moon Filter.

And a Nylon Carry bag, and a 5 X 24 Finderscope and a Bonus CD. The Celestron first Scope comes with two Eyepieces an H20mm and a SR 4mm Eyepieces. I also am going to buy a 2X Barlow Lens which I am going to use with this Excellent Telescope.

One thing when you buy this Excellent Telescope is you don’t have to get a Tripod. And I like that very much.

The Celestron FirstScope 76mm tabletop “Baby Dobsonian” is normally listed as a beginners telescope. It is easy to use, but there are some minor issues with the design. First, the location of the focuser.

In the earlier design, like this one, it is located perpendicular to the altitude axis. While this seems like it would be easy to use, in fact it isn’t; you have to lean over the instrument to look into the eyepiece.

On the later models this was corrected by rotating it 45, which makes it far easier. The other issue with this version are the included eyepieces, a 20mm H and 4mm SR. While the 20mm eyepiece is somewhat usable, the 4mm is not.

For a “fast” (that is to say, short) telescope like this, you want lower power eyepieces (also, due to the mirror’s shape you are somewhat restricted). While the literature that first announced this telescope said that it was capable of up to 180x magnification, in practice that is far from the case.

I would hesitate to take it above 50x, which means using a 6mm eyepiece. However, when used with lower power eyepieces, such as a nice 20mm Plossl or Kellner, the views are good. Even a 6mm Plossl will allow you to see Jupiter’s Galilean moons and Saturn’s rings, though of course not in great detail.

There is also no finder scope included, though there is a mount for one. My advice when purchasing this telescope is to buy better eyepieces, perhaps some inexpensive Plossl’s and Kellner’s, with no less than 6mm focal length.

and no higher than 25mm. The newer models rectify some of the design flaws, but there are still plenty of older ones out there, and with simple changes, it has the potential to be a nice little sky sweeper.

I bought this early in December as a Christmas gift for my child. I ordered online for pick up and the process as the store was very efficient! Unfortunately, I did not notice that the box had already been opened, seemingly already opened and returned, until Christmas Eve.

After opening, my son loved it, but the quality seems very poor. I wish I could return this item.

I purchased for my two adult children Who moved to a house with a beautiful view from mountains to city views. It’s perfect for them they now sit on their front porch and look far into the mountains.

They also plan to take it camping so they can watch the stars. I purchased online and delivery was prompt. I feel it’s good value for the money.

This telescope completely sucks. The stand is so unstable that it makes it next to impossible to focus and if and when you do , it is so fuzzy and unclear. I bought this junk as a alternative to a spotting scope.

Spend the extra 20 bucks and get a spotting scope. I tried to use it to look at the moon and the cheap spotting scope worked WAY better. I have a old cheapo tasco that is better. If there is a slight breeze then it shakes way to much to view.

Don’t waist your money , it’s terrible. I’m the king of making cheap crap work and there isn’t much hope for this one. I regret spending money on it every time I look at it. Heck , my rifle scope has a 12 time zoom and i can see the craters on the moon much much MUCH better than this so called telescope.

Forget about looking at any planets. Not sure how they get away with selling junk like this.

Bought for my 3 year old grandson who loves to watch farmyard animals from his home. Was very impressed with the strength of the lens. Great mini size for small hands and fairly robust too. Highly recommend.

Bought this for the grandchildren to use on a forest holiday. Very impressed with the telescope and how clear it is. The grandchildren are going to have lots of fun using it.

The website states from 3 yr. However, when I unpackaged the telescope it says in large letters on the front 5yrs. Now I have a quite unsuitable present and will have to start all over again.

We bought this a Christmas gift for our five year old, but the entire family has been enjoying it! It is very simple to put together and to use. Our five year old could use it straight out of the box without issue.

If you follow the instructions they provide you should have no trouble using this telescope! Shipping was very fast and made with plenty of time to spare for Christmas. We LOVE our purchase from AmScope and will definitely be using them for our next telescope!.

Very disappointed. Was a Christmas gift for my grandson, I wasn’t expecting a high quality telescope, just a beginners for a 12 year old. Could not see anything through it, even have a friend come check it for us who has telescopes.

He could not either. I’m going to try and return it. Do not recommend.

This scope has very few helpful instructions and even less description of how to use it correctly. The legs are too short and needs to put on a table even for a 5 year old to use. The stability is bad.

This was a waste of money for me.

Purchased as Christmas present. Arrived quickly, well packaged, grandson delighted with it. He said the sheep on the hill looked really close. No idea if it’s any good for looking at the night sky, but he’s 6, and more likely to use it for playing pirates.

My 9-year old grandson found it vey clear, and it’s easy to adjust. He would have liked it to be more powerful. He hasn’t read the book yet, so can’t review it.

I brought this for my grandaughters has there dog passed s they was very upset we told them rex is now a star in the sky. every night before bed they look up to the sky with the telescope and tell rex how much they miss him but they are happy cause nanny got them a telescope so when they are sad and miss him they can look up in to the sky for him and it makes them happy 2 happy little girls.

This is a great Scope with a well collimated mirror and really solid focusing rack. I believe the tube is made of steel or aluminum and is fairly thick. The quality you’re getting here is better than most other reflectors in this price-range.

The EQ mount that came with it is great quality. The Finder Scope is decent (fairly typical of most Finder Scopes that are included in Scope package deals these days). You have everything you need here to get started.

Now it’s up to you (the Astronomer) to put it to practice!.

I’ve had it a few days and I’ve been lucky to have clear skies and a very bright moon to get acquainted with the telescope! I love it! Can’t wait till the sunset to get back at it!! Great buy! Only issue which is a minor one, the assembly instructions are horrible.

I used the picture on the box and a little patience. Got it together in about 10 minutes.

We bought this telescope for the deck on our new home. We are away from all the lights of town/the city and our boys wanted to get one. This one was so easy to get together, easy to find stars and other objects in the sky and the lenses work great.

I was a little skeptical because the price was low but I am more than happy we chose this product. The kids use it all the time and the adults do too!!.

The telescope is way better than expected. Though it’s cheap, it can show great views of planets like Jupiter, Saturn and Mars. The moon looks beautiful with it. Only thing being that it has to be viewed on a very low magnification since the image becomes blurry with higher magnification.

This is a great telescope for kids, as the tripod adjust short enough for little legs, and the tripod itself is sturdy (no accidental tipping). The three eyepieces can just be rotated through, so there is no time wasted screwing in a different one like with some telescopes, and it has a phone holder.

I like that this telescope came with a bag for storage and transport.

I really love my new telescope, I am quite impressed with the quality and workmanship of the scope and the tripod. I have not had time to stargaze but I have used it for surveillance and the results are impressive.

I did have a little trouble interpreting the user guide, and the print was a bit small. I also would like to have a case for the telescope and accessories but I did not find one in your catalog.

This is my first telescope. When I ordered this one from the catalog, it said this particular telescope was for beginners. It may be but the manual does not explain how to put it together or use it very clearly.

The telescope is put together but I am unable to give a review because I have not used it yet.

After a lot of research purchased this telescope because it was recommended for beginners and great for travel. Like many people, we live in an area with a lot of light pollution so to really see the stars we need to travel.

I recommend reading the directions carefully and practice a few times at home before taking it out at night. Our first time using at a dark skies location, it was approximately 26 degrees out and the wind was really blowing.

Knowing how to assemble in the dark was paramount to success out there. Can’t wait to for the next adventure.

I love the Discovery Mindblown – Toy Telescope with Tripod. This is a great beginner telescope for kids of all ages. It has a quick and simple set up and is easy to teach kids the process of setting up a telescope.

I love that it comes with 2 different lenses that can be changed out in about a minute. I love that it has a smaller magnifier lense for finding what you want to look first before using the actual telescope itself.

The view through it is great and is very clear. Also the tripod can easily be adjusted to different heights so it can be used by children and adults of all ages. I highly recommend this for a beginner telescope for kids.

My son was so excited to experiment with this telescope & it did not disappoint. It’s simple enough for my 11 year old to figure out & independently do by himself. Set up was super quick and easy with simple instructions.

It is made with quality materials and does feel cheap & its not heavy. It a pretty good balance of weight especially for children. He was so amazed at the quality of the view of scope and so was I. We were able to make out some star landmarks, planets, and the moon.

The Discovery Mindblown Telescope with Tripod is awesome! It is super easy to set up, took all but a few minutes. It’s a great size for the kids, my daughter was able to see through it with no issues.

The tripod is fully adjustable with pan and tilt. Comes with 50x and 100x lenses. There are also glass optics for the best view. It was a lot of fun putting it together and using it as a family. We all got to see the moon and stars, something I haven’t done in a very long time so it was a nice treat.

I would definitely recommend this product, it is a great educational toy.

I know it’s a toy, but I thought you would be able to see something (ANYthing) through it, but you can’t. Even if it was just being able to see regularly and not closer up would have been better. I was disappointed, but am keeping it because I needed it for a pirate treasure hunt.

It will have to be just for looks. (pun intended).

I got this to display in my sons room, it’s a pirates theme. I didn’t really expect much when I ordered it but it turned out to be better than expected. It was bigger than I thought it would be and it was very well made.

It zooms in and out like a real telescope and it will make a fun toy for my son when he gets older and learns what it is.

Great toy . Sturdy. Kids love it. Good size for toddler to use.
