20 Best Tents For Mountaineering (2022 Updated)

The tent fly ripped on the first trip out in 20 to 25 MPH winds. I own(ed) several tents from TNF, REI and BA and they all have me served well. My TNF tents are all going on twenty years with nary a tear.

I was not expecting great quality nor was I looking for it. I have seen this brand around a lot recently and I thought I would give a try as I needed another tent for large family campouts was not looking for anything amazing.

The quality is too poor though and as I said it ripped in winds 20-25 MPH. Backcountry was great, however, and gave me a full refund.

After researching a large variety of tents, this one fit my needs – almost tall enough to stand up, easy setup by 1 person, no pole sleeves, durable floor, zippers and stitching, windows on the doors, smaller footprint for tent (no huge vestibules on each side).

I’ve camped in this for 5 nights on 2 different trips. It handled windy gusts and rainstorms just fine. I used all the guy lines and staked it appropriately with the footprint. This tent fit my needs without a huge price tag.

I bought this tent because I needed a 3 person / 4 season tent for an Arctic Refuge river trip. The issue with packing for an Arctic river trip is you never know what you’ll get. Temps can range from 20 to 80 and there is strong potential for high winds on the coastal plain – so you want a decent 4 season tent in the event weather really gets bad.

First the good: This tent is bomb. It is burly and the guy lines on all sides allow you to pitch in virtually any weather – which was nice on the coastal plain where we had constant 20mph+ winds for 30 hours with nothing available to act as a wind break.

It is also cosy and warm in cold temps – which was nice the day the temp dropped to 30 and the steady rain turned to snow. At 10 pounds this tent is in the VE-25 / Trango 3 category in that you’re either using it as basecamp tent or you’ll hauling it to really inhospitable places.

You could haul it to 17K on Denali (and I’m sure many will) but there are several tents on the market that are a few pounds lighter that can withstand 17K winds just fine. This would be an ideal base camp tent for an Alaska Range trip and you could pitch the tent and feel fine about leaving it in place for 24+ hours while you ventured on a 1-2 climb.

The built in flaps open the vestibule would block spindrift during storms and the roomy vestibule would allow you to set up a pit / cook shelf on one end and store gear on the other end. It is a roomy tent and 3 people would be comfortable at basecamp if gear was stored in the vestibule (2 if gear was stored inside).

In regards to color – the change in spectrum due to the blue color takes some getting used to – and the black cord used for guy lines should ideally be swapped out for a reflective cord – but these are minimal issues that most users won’t care about.

And now the bad: If you plan to use this tent in warmer temperatures you will be unhappy. The lack of ventilation, while ideal for cold temps, makes this tent unbearable anywhere you might encounter warm weather.

On our Arctic trip we had temps that ranged from 30 to 80 – and on the 80 degree evenings the tent was far too warm. Even with the vestibules completely rolled open and the screens down the tent lacked adequate ventilation and it was a very unpleasant sleeping environment.

It could be argued that this tent was never designed to be used in summer temperatures – however I have spent many days in hot temperatures on the lower Kahiltna and this tent would be too hot on a glacier in direct Alaska mid-June sun.

Black Diamond could have easily addressed the ventilation issue by either installation of an additional vent inside the tent (similar to the roof vents on the Trango and VE-25), installing full length screens on the doors, or installing a tie back loop that would allow you to completely roll back the vestibule on warm calm days (similar to tie back loops on the Kaitum).

All that said – given we ended our trip with snow and temps in the 30s I am happy with the tent. When the wind was gusting steadily and it was dumping sleet and snow I had zero worries about getting wet or breaking a pole.

And while being hot in the 24 hour Arctic sun was unpleasant it was something we could deal with – whereas getting wet and cold due to a lighter / more ventilated tent is something you really don’t want to worry about.

My friend has a four person mission tent, and after camping with him I absolutely fell in love this tent. I have always wanted to own one of these tents, but I would love it if you offered more colors of this tent particularly black with white logos in order to better match our tactical gear.

We both happen to be training survivalists, who agave been searching for years for the perfect tent for us. This tent is perfect for where we happen to live, and perfectly works for each season that comes our way.

However I personally think that it would draw more attention towards this tent if you offered more colors in order to please everyone’s respective personal color pallets. The same suggestion goes for another one of my favorite products you sell which is the twilight bivy.

I would be personally unbelievably happy if you would want to take my suggestion. Please think about it, and keep up the great work that you already do.

The medium sized 3P is an excellent compromise size that can be used as a 2 person palace or a cramped 4 person home. I love that the fly is attached to the tent body so when I take it out in a downpour the interior of the tent stays dry.

You stake the four corners of the rectangular floor, then assemble the poles into the structural frame before you raise the tent to attach. All these features make pitching a Mission tent in high winds and torrential rains a pleasure… at least in comparison to other tents.

Love all the interior attachment points… I think I counted around 20. I’ve always had one vestibule with previous tents but having two equally sized vestibules and doors made getting in and out of the tent much easier and made it easy to keep equipment off the tent floor.

This is listed as a 4 season tent but this tent would be tough to use in hot weather. The only ventilation to the tent body is from bug netting on the top 1/3 of each door (which I don’t recall seeing in descriptions or photos).

And of course the fly extends basically to the ground. This is a no-compromise cool or cold weather tent, more so than previous 4 season tents I’ve used which had full netting doors. You’ll need a different tent for summer, but the lack of compromise make it extra nice in cool or cold weather.

I wasn’t excited about the monotone blue color of the fly but it’s nicer in person than the photos. I will probably replace the black guy lines with bright orange line which will complement the blue nicely and make them easier to see.

The tent body is white which is nice, but everything and everyone inside is going to look blue anyway. I like my yellow tents, but mostly I don’t spend a lot of time in the tent during the day. If I had to be in a tent all day as part of a base camp I suppose blue would be easier to live with.

Finally, looking at the BD videos on the tent I was a bit concerned about how the fabric was flapping in the light winds. I have a Fitzroy single wall which has drum tight walls, and other 4 season tents I’ve use are a lot more taught than the videos of the Mission tents.

In person though it’s clearly not a problem. There are a lot of guy lines. It’s never going to be like the single wall Fitzroy, but you can make it much better than the videos. I really like the Fitzroy and an old VE-25 I used to have, but this Mission 3P is my new favorite tent for cool or cold weather.

Got buried under snow and wind at Mount Baker, held up like a dream. Took on 50mph winds at Illumination Saddle high on Mount Hood, didn’t think twice about it holding up. Been winter backpacking in the PNW the past year with it and it holds up great.

Thing is bombproof. When I set up for the night I know it can take on any conditions thrown at it. I use the BM3 for two people, very spacious. The amount of compartments to stow gear helps dry out clothes or simply organize while the weather outside deteriorates.

Love the extra large front vestibule, fits two backpacks with plenty of gear very well. The ‘half zippers’ on the inside flys help ventilate when you still need a bit more protection. Big Agnes verifies why I’m a loyal customer once again.

I am a professional photographer, and I work with the worlds top backcountry snowboarders. We seek the wildest terrain the mountains have to offer, which leaves ZERO energy for worrying about weather or not our gear is going to preform.

The bottom line is that we demand gear that is built to last, functional, and light. The Battle Mountain tent is just that. It stands up to burly storms, has dual vestibules that let two adults gear up at the same time, and is plenty spacious.

I also need to compliment the ventilation on this tent. Keeping our our gear and cameras dry is the difference between success and miserable failure, and I’ve never woken up with condensation inside the tent.

My boyfriend and I used this tent all hunting season from car camping to backpack hunts. Temperatures at night ranged from 65F to -5F. We experienced pretty much all the weather conditions – rain, snow, and high winds.

Our 3 complaints: The inside of the tent body and the rain fly ice up significantly at temps below 15F, despite venting configurations. Second, the vestibule is very small for a tent that is advertised as a 2P specifically designed for backpack hunting.

Finally, set-up instructions state it is very important to stake out all points, but you’re not provided with enough stakes or guy-lines to do this. Good traits: Windows and versatility of venting is pretty great.

Really can keep in the heat. Definitely kept us dry in the rain. It held up well, with minimal flapping in high winds and withstood about 4inches of snow piling up. The tent fabric dries pretty quickly which is helpful.

The tent length is appropriate and provides a little extra space (it could be an inch or two wider). The reflective guy-lines and seams are really awesome for finding the tent at night. Overall, how light the tent is negates all of our complaints!.

Easy to set up. Looks great. Terrible performance in the rain. First time out, it rained intermittently through the night. tent. We had intermittent rain throughout the night. The outside rainfly acted more like a sponge than a water repellent.

All our sleeping bags and gear touching the lower parts of the tent were wet. The tub floor most certainly did not provide a dry tent as advertised. Our boots stored in the outside vestibule were also wet as the rainfly was soaked.

I was hoping to take this tent on a western hunt next year but I will never trust this tent to perform in those conditions when I need it the most.

Took this bad boy to the mountain a few weeks back, it performed like a champ. I wanted to ease into the use before I started to piecemeal parts to across multiple packs. As far as performance it did it’s job well! Easy set up and tear down even I the dark.

It’s a great piece of equipment especially with a small group.

i purchased this tent based on other reviews of how this tent holds up in wind and rain. The first trip I took it rained nonstop for 8 hours. When we woke up the next morning everything was dry!! This tent fit 2 adults very comfortably, the pouches within the tent were great for the wallet and misc items.

Tried once, not during rainy season. Adequate amount of inner pockets and the space is more than enough for me as in a 5 feet and 10 inch person like me (ample of place for 2 person). Ventilation (Tropical Rain Forest) is good and the tent attachments looks good as well.

I bought this tent for myself and my two small dogs (18lb and 11lb) to go primitive camping and I love it! Perfect size for us with adequate room for my pack under the fly. I would not want to share it with another person however, as I think it would be a little too cramped for my taste.

I like breathing space! Extremely quick and easy to set up and take down. I will be getting a lot of use ou.

I bought a Bibler Tripod Bivy about 30 years ago, for use in NSW and Tasmania, Australia. The Tripod was last in action for an overnight bivy on the Tasman Peninsula last weekend. But it’s not great for a multi-day walk, and too tight to get dressed in, in the rain! So when I wanted to upsize about 10 years ago, I bought an Ahwahnee.

I was impressed by the toughness and breathability of the Todd-Tex, and I’d learnt to cope with the fiddly pole insertion. The Ahwahnee has the full size double doors, so with the doors fully down it’s a beach shelter, as breezy as the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

If there are bugs, the No-See-Um mesh is bug proof and no real restriction to airflow. For torrential rain, and we get plenty of that, the fabric doors can be left open under the transverse pole which holds up a little awning, so there’s enough ventilation in a summer storm.

For snow camping the Ahwahnee is freestanding, easy to set up in a spindrift blizzard (dive in with a head torch and mostly close the door behind you, start the poles at the upwind end), very stable with guy lines out.

The only essential accessory is a small microfibre towel to wipe up mud from your boots – you can’t leave them outside or a funnel web spider or tiger snake will nest in them overnight! The little towel can be left at the foot of the pole nearest your head, because some condensation trickles down the poles, especially if there are 2 of you in the tent.

Otherwise it’s the driest tent I’ve ever had. I have used one vestibule for 2 people, so boots can be stored in packs outside the tent. 2 people plus gear is a cozy fit without the vestibule. For planned foul-weather snow-camping I use my Bibler Tempest, slightly lighter than the Ahwahnee with vestibule, but the Tempest isn’t as well ventilated if the weather turns warm.

The Ahwahnee is super versatile, I’ve had it in +40 to -10 C, winds from zero (that’s the real test of tent ventilation) to 130 kmh (bent and kept me awake, didn’t break!). I usually use the footprint, it’s never leaked on salty beach sand, boggy river edge, and slushy snow.

It’s the only tent you’d ever need if you want one tent for any weather. All the other “4 Season” tents are one season winter tents! The other bonus is the view out the 2 huge doors. In the morning you can lie in your sleeping bag or sit on your mat, watching the mountains or the dolphins out in the surf, while you fire up your gas stove.

Over a twenty year period, I have spent months in Eldorado and Bombshelter since these tents were named Bibler. The Bombshelter from 2004 is still going strong and has been used in Scandinavia and the Caukasus.

The hardest winds I experienced during an ascent of Elbrus at some 15. 000 feet. Instead of breaking, it folded and rebounded with the assistance of the inhabitants. The poles just would not break. As to the Eldorado (purchased 2001), the tent is now on its last lap and will retire as a play around garden-tent for the small ones.

I have used it in various conditions in Scandinavia, the Central European Alps, Aconcagua, the Cascades and Sierra Nevada. The Todd Tex fabric is the key to the tents, and which makes your tents stand out of the crowds.

The interior surface of the tent is “hairy” in a way which makes frost aggregating into drops not fall into the tent before it condensate. Yes, the fabric is sturdy and voluminous. I cope with the latter by using a compression bag (Sea-to-summit).

I have two suggestions for improvement. Both relates to the Eldorado / I-tent: 1. Allow for a double set of poles to increase the performance of the smaller tents in harsh wind. This implies adding an extra set of receivers/cups for the two extra poles in each of the four corners of the tent.

2. NB: For some inexplicable reason Black Diamond has removed the two guy-lines fixed to the two long walls of the original Bibler Eldorado tent (same goes for I-tent) where the “Black Diamond”-logo shines so bright.

I am not sure what you where thinking. Just bring the removed guy-line attachment loops back. They are essential for wind protection, which – after all – is the main point of this first class alpine tent.

As you do it, consider adding a loop/fixation point just some foot beneath at the floor level (where yellow and black fabric interface), to allow for better ground attachment. As professional tent-makers, you will immediately understand why this is necessary.

I have an original Bibler Juniper tent. I’ve had it since new from the mid 1990s. When this tent was purchased, I had to go against a wave of people suggesting a single wall tent would perform horribly in the humid climate of the southeastern US in the Appalachian mountains and more specifically, the Blue Ridge escarpment.

I still use this tent for a reason! *Caveat* – I’m not a summer camper – In shoulder seasons and winter (still plenty humid down here), I do not wake up to wet (or damp) tent walls. In regular downpours, the tent doesn’t leak (except the oddly designed vent on top, which isn’t totally sealable).

It seems the fuzzy texture on the inside of the Toddtex material does what it should – capture water vapor, allowing the selectively permeable membrane to wick the water out. I’ve used this tent on nights only falling into the mid 70s to nights dropping well into single digits.

I’ve used it in lengthy weekend washouts to multi night ice climbing trips in the northeast with decent snowfall. The only water I’ve experienced in the tent are occasional spills and occasional dripping from the aforementioned vent.

I can’t speak for the current line of I Tents, as I still use the lighter weight Juniper. I LOVE THIS TENT. I’m in my early fifties now, and I prefer hammock camping to sleeping on the ground, but when the need to do so occurs, out comes the Juniper.

My son uses it for Boy Scout camping, also. The interior pole design seems strange at first, but the first time it has to be erected in the rain, you immediately understand why it’s a great idea. In short, if I’m on the ground, I’m in this tent.

Black Diamond – bring back this series so I can replace it! It’s getting old, like me – but I have more life left. The Bibler is wearing out!.

I ordered this with the 1p insert, however the item was back ordered. Hyperlite went above and beyond to get me my tent on time, they shipped it with the 2p insert insead, tent showed up the day I was needed to be on a Float plane! Thank you! Pros – Very light, easy to setup, and can be taken down Insert and Shell in one piece which is very handy in a rainstorm.

This was used for a ten day backcountry hunt in the Northern Rockies. It handled high winds, and heavy thunder showers very well. I found condensation levels were lower than my Marmot 2p tent significantly.

Cons- Dyneema fabric is VERY loud in a rain shower! Also, I am 5’7″ and found the tent to be the perfect length. Taller users might be pushing the mesh out towards the Shell. There is no Vestibule of any kind, with two people it would be very cramped to keep two backpacks out of the rain.

As a one person tent with the 1p Insert this is an outstanding setup for a balance of weight, strength, ease of use, and dry storage for gear. As a 2p i think it leaves something to be desired space wise.

Build quality is very good, material is excellent, and the service was outstanding.

Light, strong, easy to set up, versatile, and doesn’t fill up my pack — what’s not to love? I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with tents, and I’ve gone through quite a few of 3 and 4 season options.

Obviously tents are great because they keep you warm and dry in the mountains, but I’ve always hated how much space they take up in my pack and how much weight they add to my back. Bivy sacks kinda suck during a storm, and single wall models struggle with the moisture management issue.

Enter the UltaMid2. Even with the full insert (which I bought), it’s weight-competitive with single wall tents. Both layers compress into a stuff sack smaller than the included sack for either layer, and it’s laughably light.

I’ve only had it out in the mountains for a couple nights now, but the fabric seems tough and likely to last for a long time. The translucent material lets natural light in, and the full insert provides plenty of room for two tall adults (6′ and 5’10”).

The only glaring omission is the lack of a vestibule, but I’ll gladly put up with that inconvenience for the sake of a tent I don’t want to cover in gasoline and start on fire.

After 40+ nights and one year into owning this tent I’m ready to review. I’ve hardcore lived out of this Mid for weeks at time so I can now confidently speak on it. The good: 1) The simplicity, ease of setup, and versatility are next-level.

2) I trust this Mid in any environment- from humid Deep South summers to frosty high desert winters this shelter has stunned & performed in the wind, rain and snow. I pair it with the net with no floor when bug pressure is heavy and flying insects like mosquitos are kept OUT although ground crawlers may still crawl.

3) Weight and packability make this thing a delight to haul anywhere. 4) Sex appeal. What else can I say? This Mid turns heads, starts convos, and looks damn good pitched just about anywhere. The not so good: 1) Holes! I’m troubled by several small holes that have appeared around the base- troubled because there was never a precise moment where I noticed these occur and I don’t know of anything that I did to cause them.

I expect my gear to perform and can be harsh at times, however I always remain mindful and pay attention to abuse and potential damage, so the sudden appearance of said holes has lowered my trust in durability and expectations on build quality.

HMG markets the Mid as a badass backcountry shelter so random holes are NOT cool. 2) I am 5’11” tall, 170lbs w/ athletic build and when I lay flat in the tent my head and feet graze the front and back tent walls- meaning my head and feet rub on condensation, getting sleeping bag/clothing wet.

If you’re my height or taller (or just a widebody) then def take into consideration that you MIGHT NOT fit inside this thing very comfortably. I really wish it had a few extra inches added to all of the dimensions.

3) The DCF material is not very breathable, dries slow inside and can heat like a car under a hot day’s direct sun- I always pitch with airflow in mind. !) Know what you’re getting- pyramid design tents like the Mid do not have a vestibule.

Can’t give 5 stars due to the holes, but overall I am pleased with my investment in this shelter and look forward to many more backcountry nights spent under the Mid. Bonus: Running a floorless shelter in insect-laden environments has liberated me from the need to be completely sealed off from every living creature.

Free yourself, go floorless. It’s the way humans USED to live.

Ook het staggen van de tent door middel van de haringen die in systeem “dode man” werden ingegraven in de sneeuw is een stevig gegeven. De tent zelf is voldoende groot om 2 personen comfortabel te herbergen.

Om meer materiaal te plaatsen is het handig om de voortent mee te hebben. Daarin is dan ook ruim plaats om 2 stevige rugzakken te leggen. Verder hebben we uitgebreid gekookt in de binnentent – eigenlijk not done in een single wall tent omwille van de condens.

Dit was hoegenaamd geen probleem, de condens ontsnapte snel via de dakopeningen en liet geen sporen na binnen in de tent. Het inpakken van de tent was een eenvoudig gegeven, waarbij de compactheid super was.

De hele tent met voortent en onderzeil was letterlijk kleiner en lichter dan mijn slaapzak. Een stevige aanrader voor de gevorderde alpinist ! Erik Adriaenssens Voorzitter bergsportclub Alpigo vzw.

I have used this tent for high alpine winter outings in Colorado and Washington State and an expedition on Denali, in Alaska, and it rocks for a range of reasons: it’s easy to set up in rough conditions, and it shrugs off the foulest 4 season weather that Alaska and the Lower 48 have to offer; it’s roomy enough for a team of 2 to live in it without having to crawl all over each other, and it’s also small enough for a narrow tent platform on steep ground; and its yellow color creates cheerful light inside the tent on the dimmest, grayest day.

I strongly recommend getting its vestibule, so that you have a semi-indoor space for running your stove and stashing a stuff sack of snow (for melt water) and your boot shells. The vestibule also creates a really nice buffer between foul weather and the interior of the tent.

I believe I was sent a defect tent. I’ve contacted BD customer service and recieved no reply. I did a ton of research before buying this tent. The customer reviews and gearhead recommendations don’t match up with the product I recieved.

Both the front and back strut poles don’t fit into its snap points. The arch poles don’t line up with the pole ties, and when I maneuver them around to fit, the tent looks incredibly forced just to accommodate the poles.

I am no novice to tents. I followed the set-up instructions exactly, I have tried to give it the benefit of the doubt by taking it out multiple occasions, and even had a friend set it up for me–same issues prevail–it still falls short of BD’s usual standards.

I was almost going to let it go, when one of the arch poles snapped mid trip. What are you guys going to do to make this right?.

This thing feels like bunker when you’re in it. The internal poles stretch the tent out so tight that there is absolutely no flapping when the wind starts howling. If you don’t read the instructions then you’ll find (like I did) that condensation builds up pretty quickly.

If you do read the instructions (like I eventually did), then make sure to unzip the tops of the doors to allow airflow and then you won’t have the condensation issue anymore. Also, read the instructions so you don’t snap any of your arch poles while setting the tent up.

My only legitimate complaint about this tent is that my wife feels so secure in it that she makes me carry it in the summer. It’s a light winter tent but not a light summer tent!.

I purchased the original one almost 30 years ago 2nd hand from a friend who upgraded to the six person model. Initially, set up can be problematic but rapidly improves once you you have done it a few times.

Just give yourself about an hour at the first go. This tent was ideal for two adults and two kids and was used mainly for dry weather camping all over California. Set up can take place in less than 15 minutes if it is a team effort.

It performs flawlessly especially in high desert wind storms and keeps out the high elevation mountain cold. After years of use, the elastic chords on the poles and rain fly stretched a little and the water proofing seam strips on the fly came off and the zipper on the haul bag gave out.

Nevertheless with a new sealing, the tent is still totally usable and has been passed on two my teenage kids. I recently replaced it with the newer model and also purchased the optional floor liner which makes cleaning easier.

I love this tent and would highly recommend it to young families looking for a compact capable unit for remote Jeep camping where it’s weight is not going to be a drawback or to empty nesters who can now haul a pair of cots along instead of the kids.

My recommendation would be to replace the stakes with 8-10 inch landscape nails which perform better on hard ground once the original stakes can no longer tolerate the abuse. With some reasonable upkeep, the R.

O. I. Would be 20 year+ of safe, comfortable, dependable shelter in all kinds of weather. This tent is way to heavy for back packing, but is great for Jeeping, hunting horse camping, beach camping or any activity where you do not have to actually carry it on your back.

We haven’t used the new tent yet, this is the second purchase of the same tent. we bought it to replace our 16-year-old identical tent. We conservatively estimate it spent at least 400 nights island camping over that time.

It held up extremely well to storms, grandkids and dogs! We kept it going patching the occasional spark or branch hole using Tear-aid tape and did replace some poles later in the tent’s life using spares, both bought through Cabela’s.

We think it’s great that you are able to maintain the tent for almost 2 decades and only replace it when absolutely necessary. We love how stable it is in the wind, and it is extremely roomy. Nice to be able to stand up inside, and the vestibule seals well to keep shoes and boots dry during storms.

The dark green color does make it an indoor sauna if it’s in the hot summer sun. you can open the main door plus a 2nd door and another large panel for cross ventilation if needed. We have friends that have bought the same tent after looking at ours and they love it too.

It was good to review the video tutorial before setting up the tent. The set-up is pretty straight-forward. If you follow the instructions, you shouldn’t have a problem. The tent can be set up with one person, which is what I did in my living room, yet it would be faster and easier if there was a second person to assist.

The material is very sturdy, the best I’ve seen. The tent will fit 4 people and their sleeping bags without extra gear -or- it’s spacious enough for 2 people and their gear. I’m looking forward to using the tent.

I’ve viewed a video from someone who has had their tent for 8 years and spent a night in the tent during a storm with 80-mph winds and 2. 25 inches of rain barreling down on them. Whereas everyone else’s tent was demolished, this tent only suffered a minor tear in the rainfly from a fallen branch.

I hope I never have to go through that kind of experience. However, if I do, I will feel much more at ease in doing so.
