20 Best Tents For Snow (2022 Updated)

Packed quite small, quite light. Comes with 6 pegs (Y-shaped) and 4 Guy-lines. I plan to use 8 guy-lines. You can use up to 14 pegs, will likely used 10-12. The two main poles are hubbed in the middle which make setting up little faster but also might impede durability since they prevent the poles from engaging all the way.

Probably what Nemo was going for and poles are confidence inspiring DAC. The ”brow” of the vestibule make the fabric of the tent very thigh, enough to make you wonder if your not going to rip that part off, again probably part of the design and will surely help stand up to heavy wind/snow load.

The four main guy-out points go through the tent fly and attach to the tent fabric (I was under the impression they would attach to the poles instead). Again, wonder if that will eventually rip at some point.

Everything looks solid, materials are thin but seem to be good quality. I had a Nemo before and trust their products to be durable. I do around 50 days of winter camping, hence my questioning about durability.

Got it in sale, would absolutely recommend be it for winter or summer (zipped screen mesh all around). Would buy a 3p if going to be 2 adults. Does not come with footprint and atm it is out of stock everywhere.

Can’t really use universal footprint since tent is narrower on one end.

If you are looking for solid year round tent that can confidently provide secure shelter in most environments then this fits the bill. I do a lot of solo multi day excursions into the backcountry so I need a tent that is easy to pack and carry but will stand up to the elements.

This two person is ideal space for one. Two would be tight. Packed size is a comfortable fit in a pack where space and weight management is a premium. The near vertical walls manage precipitation and give the inside a spacious feel.

I have had many tents over the years and the word I would use to describe this tent is “ balanced “. It is not the lightest nor heaviest but puts together the features of weight, strength and size into ratio that has made it my go to tent when I want to be confident my shelter will do what it is supposed to do year round- keep me dry and out of the wind.

Cool color, super lightweight but durable. This held up on exposed beach in Homer, Alaska with some rough winds. The internal frame poles aren’t easy to set up. Helps to have a friend, so if you’re going solo, I’d practice before you find yourself in a windstorm trying to set this up.

The color is slick and identifiable from a distance. Internal pockets are great for storing those items you want readily accessible: headlamp, slippers, books, bear spray/gun. Sleeps two, comfortably.

Most ideal for a duo on an overnight trip. I’d also consider buying separate tent stakes that can fit in the existing holes meant for the rain fly/cover. This would expedite set up. The quick lock mechanism to secure the cordage to the tent stakes worked well.

I’d also recommend pre-attaching these to the stakes. The rope is very thin and on a mountain with high winds and cold fingers, this will pose a challenge. Overall, get familiar with the nuances of this tent before stepping off and you’ll be impressed by its minimalism, lightweight design, and durability.

This is a high altitude mountaineering tent. Its not great in the rain & you WILL get wet. From doing more research AFTER I bought it which was totally my fault, I might have made another choice. But I will make do.

The materials are top notch & it is VERY light. Great for back packing far into the bush/long treks. But I now know its made where your not near a water source or a humid/rainy climate, its made for high up above tree the line mountain weather where it can snow (not wet dense snow ) or set up in high winds.

Its very sturdy for its size & sets up fast. People have said in other reviews it can take 70 KPH winds. But at this price point, I was surprised to find out you have to apply the supplied sealant to the inside/outside of all seams & let it dry for 24hrs yourself.

I might consider a diff tent for other overnight treaks and use this only when weather permits.

It was a fine fair-weather tent, until we encounter the rain. It’s definitely NOT waterproof. I’ve seam-sealed meticulously with the correct sealant that came with the tent, but it turned out it wasn’t the seams that leaked.

It was the entire fabric spontaneously leaked. It looked like thousands of beads of water bubbling through the entire fabric. My wife and I took turns wiping the water and wringing it out the tent door all night, obviously didn’t get much sleep.

We were in a remote alpine area (Gunsight, WA), and luckily it was only one day/night of rain and the weather improved after that. It’s a fine light weight tent as a wind shelter but for us the tent has to be bomb/all-weatherproof from all elements.

I got rid of the tent ASAP after the climbing trip. I’ll stick with my good old trusty Bibler I-Tent, even though that’s about a pound heavier. (or replace the poles with carbon ones to cut down another 1/2 pounds, which I did).

This tent’s weight saving came with a HEAVY cost of not being waterproof. (I don’t think this fabric pass the hydrostatic column pressure test to be waterproof imho).

While expensive, this is probably one of the best 2 person 4-season tents you can find. I’m amazed it’s so under-reviewed and under-promoted – perhaps the cost? Those looking for a super-lightweight tent can find lighter alternatives (this weighs close to 7lbs), but if you want a very durable, all-purpose 4-season tent that you won’t live in fear of tearing/poking a hole in, can use comfortably anywhere and in any season, this is it.

It has all the best features of MSR’s other tents. Excellent floorspace for 2 people – as a 6’2″ guy, the extra couple of inches in this one in the length (and width) make all the difference for me- not pressing against the end walls.

I can sit upright with clearance in almost all of the tent. Two long and wide sleeping pads fit with extra room to spare. Two doors and two good size vestibules rock. Unlike most other 4 season tents I’ve seen and used, there’s a ton of ventilation, and all of it with fully zippable covers (unlike the Access 3, a tent I tried for a while and got rid of).

Unlike the Remote (another similar but more winter-oriented MSR model), this one has the XtremeShield coating too. This tent’s poles are the beefiest out there – they’re considerably thicker than the usual (already durable ones) in any other MSR Tents, and many other far more premium brands.

My previous (expensive) tent used DAC NSL Featherlites, and I was let down by them a couple of times. I don’t anticipate these will disappoint the same way. One criticism is there’s no assembly instruction/diagram (other MSR tents include it), and the twin-joint opposing pole design can be a bit puzzling to set up the first time (you need a good open space),until you figure out the method – then it’s fine.

To be fair, I don’t imagine I’m in the adventure/outdoor class of some of those who probably buy/use equipment like this regularly. But I’ve spent a huge amount of time in tents, in all kinds of places and seasons, and I’ve owned and used a good number of them for over 40 years.

As someone else mentioned, this one is the equivalent of a swiss-army knife. It’s really well-built, and for two people – very livable (unlike most other “two” person tents). A hidden gem (priced like one too!) and apparently now discontinued and discounted.

Get it while you can, if weight is not your only priority, there’s few better. MSR – build more tents like this!.

When you look at he reviews you need to figure out if the review is for the first or second version of the tent. The second version has quite a few vents to cut down on condensation. Condensation has not been a problem for me, plus when the weather turns bad and I need to close the vents on the fly I can do so from my sleeping bag inside the tent.

I bought this when the price was reduced for shoulder season canoe camping when I am guiding clients. During the early and late seasons we can have wind, sun, rain , snow and freezing temps, sometimes all in one day.

I really like the large vestibule for taking off wet clothes, drying items overnight or boiling water for dinner or breakfast when it is raining or super windy out. Even for fair weather camping you will want to bring a few more stakes than what is included to secure and guy out the fly.

When I take this tent with me on a trip I do get a bit disappointed of there is not one night of bad weather because I enjoy the comfort and confidence I get in this tent :).

I am totally thrilled with my Guideline Pro MSR Tent. The Poles are very solid and this gives me confidence that they won’t break easily like my previous ones did. This tent is a welcome upgrade from another competitors brand 2 person tent I owned previously.

The dual doors and windows give lots of ventilation options as well as convenience when occupied by 2 people. This tent really will sleep 2 people comfortably. The zipper quality is excellent and so is the heavy duty fabric.

Initial set up was a bit of a challenge as there are no instructions. Setting up the roof poles first then working the lower part into the red tabs did the trick. Not included was a tent pole repair splint, so I will be ordering one of those (not that I think it will be needed).

If you are looking for a four season tent that is durable and will house two adults this is an awesome purchase. The downside is the weight (6. 5lbs ) but I feel the quality product is worth the weight in my pack.

I used this tend for Mt. Whitney. The weather changed every 30 min. We got rain, hail, and wind and this tent held up like a champ. Easy to set up. Easy to break down. I love the size of the stuff sack as it was easy to get the tent back in the sack.

No struggling. The tent proved to be 100% waterproof in my experience. There was no issue with condensation in my limited use. The tent was also easy to set up freestanding with no stakes. I did use a tarp underneath as a footprint and to keep the tent from getting damaged.

The only oddity with this tent is the wire which holds upen the venting flaps. Its an odd design but it works OK.

I bought this winter tent specifically for a Grand Canyon River trip. River camping often has sand storms that lead to sand raining down thru the no-see ’em netting. That part worked great, though the zippers are in kinda weird places –should be able to open from bottom or top.

The cargo pockets by your pillow or feet are lacking. You need a place to put your schnadle. The “nifty” triangle add-on cargo net that hangs from the ceiling is silly. Leave it at home, it is useless.

Seems like they tried to use up leftover pieces to make it. The tent has two doors on one side and one on the other. The door on the rain fly inexplicably does not open to the one door on the one door side of the tent.

You have to reach far in to get to the zipper and crawl into the tiny vestibule to get in the tent from that side. Why not have the rain fly door match the tent door? There were not enough tent stakes for all the places to put them.

Why 11? Good thing tent stakes are easily found in popular camping spots. Also, you need a hammer or some really thick leather gloves to push the tent stakes in. They are very sharp and will cut your hands unlike the wire ones that bend, not sure what is better.

This tent is impressive. It is easy to set up due to its hub approach to the poles and colour coded grommets to insert them. It also has an innovative design converting it from cool weather shelter to very good ventilation for warm weather.

There is ample space – both floor and peak as well as storage pockets and gear loft. Overall quality seems very good (from the fly and floor waterproofing and poles). It is a really good price point for all that you get with this tent.

I had a chance to use this tent last 5 days in Okanagan region. Forecast was rain and windy over night, hot during day and cold at night. This Eureka Mountain Pass 2 person 4-season tent has proven that its usable in any environment.

It’s spacious. Also, vestibules are large enough to store your pack and boots. There is enough ventilation to use this tent well into summer. You can also close most of the ventilation in colder weather.

Seam are well sealed, there was no sign of rain water leakage or condensation at all. Its an awesome product and well made material. I am planing to use this tent it in cold weather mountaineering this winter.

I am sure this tent will be a perfect candidate.

After 10 years of hard use, my Copper Spur 2 let me down when the UV finally destroyed the rainfly. Nothing like buckling in your rainfly and having it rip down the middle. Tried patching and it just ripped more.

Since I couldn’t find a rainfly replacement that would work, had no choice but to look for a new tent. Decided to size up to a 3-person in the bikepack version. As with other tents, the 3-person is sized well for 2 people.

While I usually use as a single, I am anticipating my grandson joining me on the trail so the extra room will come in handy. Despite the extra weight, I love the interior space of this tent along with the more vertical tent walls (a nice design change).

The headroom while sitting is great for me (I am 6’2″). The vestibules are well-sized for laying out my pack, helmet, boots, and wet gear. I also like the way the doors on the tent and rainly have changed from the previous version.

Makes the ingress/egress much easier. The additional storage webbing inside should make it easy to layout gear for easy access for multi-day basecamp stays. Rainfly buckles and guylines work well for securing the tent.

Since I just purchased in late November, I really like the shorter tent pole sections as it will make it easier to store when on the go. I also like the compression stuff sack. Sometimes these things work only for the initial factory packing, but this one does the job.

I cannot give any feedback on how well the new dagger tent stakes hold up nor how the tent performs in rough weather. I only set it up to make sure everything was good to go. Yes, this tent is expensive and I am glad I could swing the cost.

Big Agnes hasn’t let me down in the past and I hope to get the same number of years out of this one. Can’t wait for the 2022 volunteer work trail season so I can give it the full test.

Brilliant tent as expected, actually exceeded expectations both in terms of wind and water protection and especially with the easy dirt removal / repellency. Note that the 4-person UL4 DOES NOT HAVE the 3-D bin / Mezzanine pocket what was a true disappointment! While the detailed description does not mention this pocket still the generic description of the UL4 says “Traditional, media, and 3D bin pockets.

” therefore I am disappointed, especially as I have to order some other organizer instead of that big pocket. Another “disappointment” is that the silicone like surface of the bottom makes air mats (S2S ones) creaking very loud due to mat vs tent bottom contact.

These mats has minimal noise otherwise, much less than competitor air mattresses. Although self-inflating mats does not have noise here but those are heavy for an UL tent. Also the ground sheet is too large, if I use that for the pegs before the inner tent then my inner tent cannot stretch to that point, so I have to remove the pegs and use the inner tent for peg positions – meaning the footprint will be loose under the inner tent.

The pouch of the ground sheet is so small that it is VERY hard to put the wet ground sheet back to that. Possible but challenging. But thus is nitpicking, this is a great tent, would not hesitate to purchase again!!! (My tent was purchased in Sweden and transported to Hungary by a friend.

Footprint came from UK, gear lofts and extra pegs from Slovakia, so I was dedicated to have this tent even though stocks are low everywhere now. ).

I have had my eye on the tent for a few years now. While it is a bit more expensive than what I have spent on tents in the past, I can honestly say that I am very happy that I decided to go ahead and get it.

The lower weight and smaller pack size of the Copper Spur UL1 made a big difference in my base weight and pack volume requirements. I am trying to get down to a smaller pack size for trips more than 3 days and the tent size was one of biggest issues.

I know this tent is marketed as “HV” (high volume), but I was honestly surprised how much roomer it feels compared to my previous 1P tent. I am 6″3″ and there is plenty of head room for me to sit up without worrying about touching the top with my head.

I really like the quality of the stakes that come with the tent. This is one of the first tents that I did not immediately replace the default stakes with something better. I haven’t had a chance to really, truly use the “porch” that you can create with your trekking poles, but I can see how that will be very useful for cooking in a light rain.

It did rain slightly on the second night of my first trip out with the new tent and I had no issues, as you would expect in that scenario. I did break one segment on the pole the very first time I used the tent.

It was 100% user error. I called and emailed Big Agnes, provided the required info, and they gave me the option to send it in for repair (no charge for the repair service) or to just have the part shipped to me, along with a video that explains how to perform the repair, which was quite easy.

I did have to pay shipping, but that was not much.

In 1989 or 90 I took a VE-25 w/yellow body and light blue fly to the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness Area of Colorado on a one week Sierra Club backpacking trip to do a handful of fourteeners. Everything was packed in to an 8,000 cubic inch North Face Snow Leopard HC (High Capacity) internal frame pack as with my stuff I was also carrying the teams cookwear.

The fifth night a storm rolled in with huge winds. My tent mate and I saw the aftermath of another tent shredded after hours of the winds distorting the other tents shape and then the tent popping out into form again.

The VE-25 was just shuddering a little, just undisturbed by the storm. And we stayed completely dry. Just remarkable. There were stories back then that the NF Vector Equilibrium 25 had withstood 200 mph winds in the Himalayans.

That sounded credible after our event up around Mount Harvard in Colorado. That tent has since been with me twice to Rainier, the Ozark Mountains, the miserably hot/humid in December Florida Trail, a Winter trek in Pennsylvania for part of the Appalachian Trail, and various parts of Alaska where I live.

Once in the Ozark Mountains (Hercules Glade Wilderness Area) we discovered in a torrential rain that our floor had increasing amounts of running water underneath. We pulled the stakes and dragged that tent with gear a distance fully pitched holding on mostly by the vestibule pole.

No problem. It was still dry inside when re-staked. And of course here in Alaska it doesn’t care about feet of snow dumping. Finally in 2017 the floor clear coating over the grey floor started to separate and flake and there was a serious smell.

Tried to make a warranty claim under the life-time warranty and was denied by The Northface as they understandably said the tent had successfully lived out it’s service life. No argument there. So looks like a new VE-25 after over three decades.

That’s value. But most of all, safety.

I love this tent! I’ve camped in heavy wind, rain, deep snow, and sub-freezing temperatures and it’s never given a bit of problems. I never have to question if it’ll keep me dry because I know it will.

I’ve never had such confidence in a tent. I generally only have two people in the tent, and given it’s so roomy we both can fit comfortably with our packs and gear inside. Due to all the pockets and the gear loft (bought separately), I can actually keep my gear organized.

The vents in the top of the tent and fly work great at holding condensation to a minimum. The tent sets up easily, though I always seem to have problems putting the rain fly on alone, especially at night or in windy conditions.

The only major con for me has to do with the design of the fly. I love how it goes all the way to the ground and has flaps to put snow on to further anchor it down making it impossible for rain to enter, and how the big vestibules offer plenty of storage for packs and gear, but the way the vestibules are designed makes this the hardest tent I’ve ever owned to get in and out of.

The front vestibule is long with low doors that open to the side which forces me to crawl on my hands and knees to get in the tent (not fun in wet weather). The back vestibule isn’t as deep so it’s easier but still hard to use.

I wish the pole on the front vestibule was on the back with the door centered and aligned with the door to the tent and two zippers down each side. That’d make this tent so much easier and enjoyable to use.

Last season — My backpacking buddy shows up at my workday’s end with my pack, his gear and a raging North Dakota blizzard. We drive through blinding misery, park, and snowshoe into the National Grasslands as dark overcomes the prairie and -72F steals your will and fractures grit.

(. you got that right, MINUS 72F degrees of windswept cold) The North Face VE-25 and rainfly setup in a minute with snow-stakes promising us a sturdy home through gale-force wind. We doff boots in the ample vestibule and wiggle into our sleeping bags to eat and eat and eat (high energy food) during tales of the day and plans for after dawn’s light.

We get “after-supper drowsy” and friendly sentences blur as our mummy bags and VE-25 protect our lives from frozenness long enough for the night to pass and a day of snowshoe trekking through Bur Oak forest and discovering “buffalo boulders.

” Though blizzard snows partly buried us, our goldenrod-colored home stood undaunted with flawless zipper function, swift setup/teardown, resilience in high winds and roominess for gear and us. My North Face VE-25 soars through tests of terrible conditions and ensures that us playful souls get outdoors and live to share.

I’ve been a loyal customer to the Marmot Brand for many years and still stand by their amazing products and stellar Customer Service!! I’ve used the Thor 2P tent for years and had an issue that the Customer Service Team classified as a Factory defect.

I worked with them over the course of a couple of weeks and they replaced my tent!! WOW, I was very impressed with the professionalism of the staff and the great deal they made to get me back in my Thor 2P.

I do an extensive amount of winter tent camping and this tent is the BOMB as a four season tent!! The layout is very well thought though from someone who has spent time in a tent and lots of little extras that come in handy.

The seams are bomber construction and easy to set up in the elements!! This tent is well worth the purchase if you spend any time at all in a four season tent!! Great Job Marmot Team!!! Customer for life!.

Have used this tent on a couple backcountry trips now and it has done very well. Staked out properly, no moisture has leaked in; is very light weight, even better when purchased on sale. Very roomy for 1 person, slightly too cozy with 2 people, though manageable.

Love the colors, but only downside is the lime green does seem to attract certain bugs? Sad that the tent package does not include a tent footprint. Due to the tapered nature of the tent, have tried altering footprints to find a more affordable option, but has been hard to get a good fit.

Will be purchasing a proper footprint that is specific for the tent soon.

Best 4-season tent! I have lived in my Thor 3p for several weeks at a time in the Himalayas, Andes, Sierras and Rocky Mountains — and it never disappoints! It’s quick and easy to setup. The 6-pole construction and fully seam-taped catenary floor and fly provides a stable structure that can withstand the highest winds and heaviest precipitation with ease and grace.

The two vestibules are incredibly spacious and easy to access with the large D-shaped doors. The 3P is ideal for two people when there’s a lot of gear. It truly feels like a sanctuary in the storm.

One tough tent. My girlfriend and I used the Crua Duo for both car camping and hiking in Iceland. We also made use of the Crua Cacoon while car camping. We could not have asked for a better tent. The insulation was great not only for thermal reasons, but also for reducing rain noise and keeping out the light since the sun never set while we were there.

The tent itself was very water proof and sturdy. Wind speeds reached high enough that at times we had to lay down to keep from being blown off of our feet. With minimal coverage in the way of wind breaks the tent was fine.

Even without getting the chance to dry it for two weeks straight it didn’t shown any signs of wear. We have had it for two years now and subjected it to several more trips. Still looks and works like new.

I recently purchased the Tri and Duo + Cocoon Tents. So far, I have enjoyed two trips of high alpine camping – both campsites and backpacking. Here is my review. Overall, bravo…job well done! The Duo + Cocoon works perfectly.

Inflating the Cocoon is easy simple. The combination of the Duo & Cocoon is the ultimate roomy crib for one person, or a cozy pad for 2 very good friends. The Duo without Cocoon is a great sub 6 pound 4-Season backpacking tent.

From the backpacking perspective, the sub 6-pound Duo is a luxury penthouse. Plenty of room for two adults chillin in their Helinox chairs (510 grams) – I am now ready to comfortably wait out the next never-ending rain storm.

I have no improvement suggestions for the Duo.

Perfect Tent for 2 People – built to last and I have taken it out twice already and it is simple to setup and take down and is genuinely one of the better quality tents I have used. I have had cheap tents before that I get one or two uses before the quality degrades but this tent holds up so well and I can already tell I have found my long term camping go to.

The best 2 person tent on the market. This is one of those items you buy and know you will just use for years. It is tough, easy to setup, warm, waterproof big enough for 2 people. It is everything you need in a tent and more.

Excellent tent for 2. Super good quality and is built with toughness. Waterproof survived a night of heavy rain with ease. Cannot wait to go camping more now that I have found this tent.

We wanted to love this tent, but both the 2 person and 3 person versions of this tents have left us in precarious positions. On a 2 week trip to the Bridger Tetons in WY last August, there was a snowstorm one night.

The tent couldn’t handle it. It collapsed on us during the night, leaving us to have to get out of the tent every 45 mins to clear snow after we more-or-less were able to right the tent. After backpacking for decades, we’ve never felt worried in a tent before this event.

The poles bent. We returned the 2 person and decided to try the 3 person. This weekend in Colorado (Labor Day) while backpacking, we encountered a hail storm – not uncommon in the Colorado Rockies. The 3 person tent collapsed bending the poles.

Others who were with us did not encounter the same issue with their non-Big Agnes tent. This tent performance in hail and some snow is not okay, especially when both weather vents occurred during the summer.

We loved the ease of the tent and the weight, but a 3 season tent needs to stand up to some inclement weather. This tent failed us.

Thanks, -MSR Customer Service My response to MSR: No. I’m considering purchasing the (near $700) tent but have concerns around the number of reviews that have made mention of returns due to pole end failures (either delamination of the pole material or breakage of the plastic end insert in cold conditions – which is basically the intended climate for the Access 2) Given the cost of the tent and the conditions I’ll be using it in, I simply cannot afford such failures.

Failures due to abuse/misuse or conditions that exceed the design philosophy of the tent are one thing. failures of 4th season gear due to construction material choices is another thing altogether. Don’t get me wrong.

I’m a huge fan and long time advocate/user of MSR gear. I have been using MSR products for decades, products that include tents, water filters, treking poles, dromedary bags, multiple stove models, & cookware.

All have been trusted companions…. bombproof and reliable. I can understand the quasi non-response I got (e. g. are YOU having trouble with YOUR syclone poles? If so contact us) but I suppose I was hoping to hear either A) We have no good evidence that under the intended conditions of use our syclone poles are subject to failure rates any higher than any of our other pole designs.

User reviews that give that impression are anecdotal and not supported by either our lab testing nor our consumer return/repair data. or B) We are aware of the issues raised by some of our Acccess tent owners and we are busy investigating and/or making the necessary changes needed to ensure our Access line of tents and syclone poles meet or exceed heightened reliability standards needed for the tent’s 4 season intended use.

When it comes to 4-season tents you have a choice of 9lb+ porta-caves (e. g. the Trango) or 3-4lb treeline tents such as the MSR Access that will support a foot or two of snow and withstand serious wind.

The Access makes good compromises to keep the weight respectable without “stupid light” choices such as mesh body or 10D fabrics (yes, I am talking about the Slingfin Portal). It is reasonably easy to set up, can be pitched fly first without contortions with the optional footprint, uses robust fabrics, and has copious guy points.

But it is far from perfect. Unlike the Hubba NX1, which seems targeted at hobbits with its 36 inch peak height, the Access 1 is 40 inches tall. However, it insists on maintaining the unreasonably short 84 inch inner.

If you are 6 ft or over your head and feet will touch the inner walls, and the unavoidable condensation there will get your sleeping bag damp. Not sure why MSR does this, it makes no sense other than to allow them to use universal footprints.

This is a particularly significant oversight for this type of tent, where warmer days allowing to dry out your sleeping bag may be limited. The door on the inner narrows where the torso typically enters and exits.

The placement of the seams dictates this choice, and despite that ingress and egress is fairly straightforward ever for someone like me who is not very flexible. There are only two pockets – one at the foot and one at the head.

The absence of side pockets in the head and ceiling areas is inexplicable, and frankly inexcusable. Have not yet used it in humid conditions, but the ventilation of the inner is provided by a single small triangular window.

In addition to limited ventilation it cannot be covered with a solid panel. Would have loved to see two windows with solid covers. Great that MSR has started using wide mouth stuff sacks, but making that from 30D fabric added a few unnecessary ounces to the packed weight.

That is one area where a lighter fabric would have been justified. The poles collapse to a fairly significant length. They don’t fall together even, with 1-2 sections sticking out both on top and the bottom and adding 2-3 inches on either side to the pole sack length.

This makes the pole sack too long to be stored in a horizontal position in the pack. I am sure MSR has tested this, but bending the Syclone poles is a nerve wracking experience – the plasticky feel makes me think that they will snap at any time.

There is no pole sleeve provided – not sure if this means that MSR thinks the poles will never break, or that a sleeve will not be effective if they do.

Initial review as we’ve used it once for winter ski camping, and selected this tent after an exhausting review of many different brands and models. We needed a 4-season shelter that will be primarily used for below treeline winter camping and this lightweight tent fit the bill exactly.

PROS: 1. Very roomy! I’m 6’2′ and not only can I sit up straight, laying on my back my feet don’t reach the ceiling, and I can “stand up” on my knees. Enough room for 3 people, and more than enough room for the 2 of us plus dog! There’s enough room to have gear on both sides of your pads for both people.

2. lightweight! we can’t believe this comes in at just over 5 pounds, considering how big it is, and the fabric doesn’t seem flimsy like other UL tents. 3. Doors on opposite ends of the tent! This is a feature we haven’t seen, but makes getting ready a roomy experience – no back to back here.

4. Door/fly zippers – The door and the fly are both easily operable from inside and outside the tent, with a single hand. The doors look a little small but they’re not. I can sit up straight at the entrance, something rare for a big guy like me.

5. Ventilation – despite other reviews, we experienced zero condensation on the inside of the tent despite low 30s temps, high humidity, zero wind, and the tent zipped up. There are two small windows above the doors that can’t be closed, and there are two vents at the ends.

Be sure to prop out the fly on the because we didn’t on one side and it resulted in some dampness, but not on the side that was guyed out. However, the fly itself had some condensation, to be expected.

6. Massive gear pockets 7. Vestibules – decent size outside each door and big enough for expedition packs. We watched the MSR video showing how to dig a pit outside each door, so you can sit normally when donning/doffing boots and such, and provides ample room for gear storage.

8. Storage – instead of a stuff sack with small opening, this tent comes with a roll bag with cinch straps, making storage easy and quick! CONS: 1. The single tent pole is a little cumbersome for one person to negotiate, but hey, if it was just you, you wouldn’t be in a 3-person tent, right?! We likely just need more practice.

2. My partner had a issue with the trapezoid-shaped gear pockets when retrieving an item from the deep corner of the pocket where it resulted in tugging on the opening. No issue here but something to be aware of.

This is my winter tent, and I love it. I do more than half my camping in the winter, from the Sierras to Moab and the Rockies. I’ve camped in this tent in temps down to 0° comfortably. With me and 2 dogs, we stay quite warm.

Setup is simple once you’ve done it a couple times. The color coded clips and poles help a lot. The clips are secure but easy to manipulate even when your hands are ice cold on snowy mornings. In weather above freezing, it has ok ventilation with the fly attached.

I’ve actually never used this without the fly, just bad luck I haven’t had warm temps ever for this tent. The large vestibule really helps when it’s muddy or damp. Condensation has never even been an issue for me in this tent, which is surprising given the cold temps I’ve used it in.

The only cons I can think of? It can be a little hard to line up the fly correctly with the plastic window over the tent window when setting up in low light. I also wish the fly window was more transparent.

It’s not a useful window except to let in light. Overall, a tent that allows me to camp fearlessly in winter.

I wanted to love this. I got it for snow/bad weather backpacking. I used it on one trip and I’m returning it, for the following reasons: – with the sleeved pole design it takes too long to set up and take down; not suitable during inclement weather – it was raining when I set it up, and the rain just falls into the tent when entering/exiting.

Needs the vestibule to prevent that – also needs the vestibule for stowing pack and boots overnight; I had to take them inside with me, which exacerbated condensation; the walls and my sleeping bag were damp in the morning – finally, needs the vestibule for cooking/eating protected from the elements.

I agree with some of the other negative reviews. I have a Mountain Hardwear Tent where the floor pulled right off the walls when I last set it up as the glue had dried up and crumbled apart. Surprisingly there was no backup stitching to hold it together.

A brief but of research on the internet revealed that many of them fail in this way around the 10 year mark. We tried to have this addressed under warrantee but we’re surprised to learn this wasn’t a real lifetime warranty, but a « LIMITED LIFETIME » warranty.

The tent was returned to us and we were informed it was beyond it’s expected lifetime. I have two cheap Coleman tents that have outlived and outperformed this so-called expedition grade « bombproof » tent.

I know it’s old but if even a cheap Coleman (which has been used way harder) can outlast it, that’s a pretty limited lifetime. When making expensive or mission critical purchases, you may want to think twice about Mountain Hardwear and whether you are assuming or relying on a great warranty.

There is none.

After using this tent for two early-April camping trips in northern Canada, two inadequacies immediately became clear, preventing a four-star overall rating. 1. The vent in the tent door, a triangular patch of mosquito netting, cannot be zipped closed.

When turbulent wind batters the tent it has the potential to kick and carry spindrift underneath the tent fly, which filters through the vent as fine powder over time, covering gear and sleeping bags.

It doesn’t take long for the powder to accumulate, making for a miserable night and wet morning. Indeed, the vent in the tent body is in dire need of a non-permeable flap — alike the tent door itself — that can be zipped closed from the inside, sealing off the interior from blowing snow.

This wouldn’t add much weight. 2. The second, and less critical, issue is related to the ventilation openings at both ends of the tent fly, a feature that sets the MSR Access 1 2. 0 apart from the older 1.

0 model. Also composed of mosquito netting, these tent-fly vents are held open by small jambs / latches that are held in place by square velcro patches. When in use, the inner side of the jambs, which are sewn permanently to the tent fly, poke into the tent body sharply.

The ends of the ventilation jambs are rather pointy and there is no reinforcing strip to prevent them from making contact with the tent body. The vents are super important, however, and the wind is absolutely essential in preventing condensation from accumulating inside the tent, either in the form of water vapour, or, when the the temperature is cold enough, hoarfrost.

Given that this tent is designed for colder weather and the tent body has no cross-wind ventilation design, users will almost undoubtedly experience some form of condensation on calm nights when wind is absent.

The guy lines included with the tent are ultralight and incredibly strong. But given the minimal weight and footprint of the Access 1, it is imperative to anchor the guy lines with heavy (and preferably smooth) rocks as intense wind gusts will rip tent stakes from the ground — unless used as dead men in snow.

Am personally just shy of 6’ tall and when laying down in a sleeping bag both my head and feet make contact with the gear lofts at either end of the tent body. Overall, this tent performed very well at 1,850-metres elevation amid late-winter alpine conditions and has more than adequate interior space for one person and some gear.

The Access 1 is very similar in size, shape, design (including vestibule), setup and dismantlement to the MSR Hubba (the best tent I’ve ever owned), though it is burlier, heavier, warmer and stronger.

I’ve been using this tent now for two years in all seasons in the Canadian Rockies and interior mountain ranges (Cariboos, Monashees) on ski touring and backpacking trips. On the plus side, it is very light and quite easy to pack and has held up in some pretty adverse weather and wind conditions in summer and winter.

It’s even held up when it snowed as much as 40cms on some winter trips and was half buried by driving snow. I do have to admit that I’m not a huge fan of the single pole. It seems a bit complicated to take apart to be able to effectively pack it up after use.

Also, it’s a small two person tent so it’s pretty cramped with two people and gear. Because of that, I tend to use it for myself so that I have some gear storage, especially in the winter. I would advise anyone looking at this tent to seriously consider getting the three person version for two people.

There’s not much weight difference but the extra living space would be appreciated. I wish I had done that. Overall, this tent has served me well and I have no big complaints.

This review is for the Trango 2, but the design is nearly identical. The tent itself performed well early on, seeing use high on Longs Peak and Mount Whitney. It’s very heavy for what it is, the stakes are of poor quality, and the guy lines are easily tangled.

However, it’s a sturdy, very roomy 4-season tent. Unfortunately, Mountain Hardwear does not honor their warranty. I recently noticed that the fly was flaking laminate everywhere off all the seams–think epic “tent dandruff.

” I sent in the fly at my expense ($20), only to have it show back up on my doorstep a few weeks later. The only communication I ever received from Mountain Hardwear was my return tracking number–that’s it.

No discussion of a repair, no offer to replace the fly, no discount on a new fly. Nothing. They stated only that the product was beyond its useful life. My tent was used a grand total of perhaps 15 nights out.

Zero long-term sun exposure. Always stored dry and indoors. If you charge a premium price for serious mountaineering gear, your warranty should mean something. Potential customers should know Mountain Hardwear does not honor theirs.

I own UltaMid 2 and UltaMid 4 HMG tents. I believe HMG tents are the perfect combination of low weight, durability, and weather resistant (survivability). I also own the respective inserts with DCF floors which pair well with tents.

Design for attachment of inserts to tents makes attaining bathtub shape for insert floor quite easy. keeping groundwater out when it rains. Achieving bathtub shape for floors of other, non-HMG, tent inserts is not intuitive and takes some extra effort.

I also like adjustability of optional HMG tent poles; since I’m not yet hooked on trekking poles.
