Theodore Roosevelt is best known for his time as the 26th president of the United States, but he was also a prolific writer, naturalist, and reformer. He was born in New York City in 1858 to a wealthy family, and he was educated at Harvard University.
Roosevelt’s life was changed forever when his wife and mother both died on the same day in 1884, and he retreated to the Badlands of North Dakota to grieve and to learn about ranching.
When he returned to New York, Roosevelt became increasingly involved in politics, and he was elected to the governorship in 1898. Two years later, he was nominated as the vice presidential candidate for the Republican Party.
When President William McKinley was assassinated in 1901, Roosevelt became president.
During his time in office, Roosevelt implemented a number of progressive reforms, including regulating the food and drug industries, protecting the environment, and cracking down on corruption. He also led the United States to victory in the Spanish-American War, and he helped negotiate an end to the Russo-Japanese War.
Roosevelt’s time as president was marked by economic growth and expansion, and he is often considered one of the most successful presidents in American history.
After leaving office, Roosevelt remained active in politics and public life. He founded the Progressive Party in 1912 and ran for president again, but he was defeated by Woodrow Wilson. Roosevelt continued to speak out on issues of importance to him, and he remained a popular figure until his death in 1919.
