20 Best Thin Wool Socks (2022 Updated)

I first purchased the Day Hiker Crew and it has been the best sock in this weight I have ever owned … I wore them daily during the winter and they are very comfortable and extremely durable. I purchased these, the Mountain Heritage Full Cushion Micro Wt for a summer work and activity socks … and WOW, they are great! I’m an old man with a wide foot and have had several foot surgeries.

I have tried numerous wool socks … wool is comfortable and durable. These are by far the best wool sock I have ever owned and I have tried all of the name brands I know of including SWool, Cabe…, Colum…, Bomb…, as well as all the hunting / outdoor and athletic name brand socks.

In short, I love them. Note: I have a short wide foot and ordered a Large … it fits snug when first put on but feels good all day. … ADDITIONALLY it may be worth noting, I always wash my wool socks on either warm or cold settings and always air dry and never put them in the dryer.

Truthfully I am a natural fiber nut. I worked in the textile business all of my career, most of it in the cashmere business and came to appreciate all natural fibers. Wear synthetic things is like wear plastic bags for me.

Of course I love cashmere but I spent a lot of time with wool, silk cotton and other beautiful natural fibers. As much as the plastic/synthetic fibers try to imitate them, nothing comes close to natural fibers.

Before my retirement I wore mostly wool dress socks or cotton socks. After I retired last year and with Covid, I began to play golf virtually every day and cotton and wool dress socks just didn’t work.

My wife acted on my complaining and bought me a bunch of Bomba wool socks and my near 7 day a week 4 + mile walk on the golf course wore them out pretty quickly. Next I tried Smartwool. They performed about the same as the Bombas but they too sprouted holes within the first couple of months of wear.

Then I tired Minus 33 Bought them in February and here on August 25, no holes in the heals or toes or any sign of significant wear & tear. They’re comfortable, easy to take care of and durable. I’m now a Minus 33 devotee!!.

I have owned many wool socks from many different companies, and I would easily say these are my favorites. Their fit is delightfully snug without being tight, their very high quality, they are very breathable, they are warm without being stifling – even in the warm weather, and in my case they are the perfect height for the boots I wear.

The only thing I cannot yet speak of is their longevity. I’ve had mine for three months now and they’ve retained their shape and integrity exceptionally well. I would highly recommend them, and although I already own half a dozen pair, I will be buying more.

If this was the only sock I owned, I would be happy and content.

This is the second time I have bought these socks. They keep your feet from getting so wet in summer and warm in winter. They keep there shape well through many washing. A note: The color black is mostly gray.

Brown would be brown but still grayish. I recommend them highly if you are wanting a good pair of socks. I wore cotton socks for years but now only the wool will do.

The socks seem like a good deal. Lightweight is a moving target. They are not heavy boot socks, but I would call them medium weight. I’m just in my first wearing and washing.

Having recently discovered Fun Toes Socks, I now have happy feet! These socks are the best Ive ever worn! They are super comfortable and very breathable. They wash as well as they wear! I ordered 12 pair! And, you know, Ill probably order another dozen! Fun Toes, Thats ALL I wear now!!.

I purchased several different brands of wool socks in preparation for winter up here in the north. Most of the brands labeled “wool socks” are only 5% wool, THESE socks are actually 85%! They are comfortable and the small size fits my women’s 9.

5 foot. Perfect mid weight sock, wish I could find for heavy weight! Now that I know these are the real deal I’m going to order a whole bunch more for myself and friends. They even come in a very nice box perfect for wrapping as a gift.

Totally brilliant. Merino Wool is by far the best socks for long distance hikers. These are well padded, a nice height and well constructed. Have put about 35 miles on them so far just to test them out for an upcoming expedition.

Getting more of them before leaving!.

Fit great, spandex makes them stretch good, but not tight. Keep feet cozy and have great cushion for hiking. Will buy more.

I purchased the PURSUIT Ultralight socks specifically for gravel and mountain bike riding. I live and mainly ride in central Alabama, but I make frequent trips to Georgia and North Carolina. I have multiple pairs of the normal PURSUIT socks that I wear as everyday socks, but I do not like the thickness for riding.

(But I really, really like the normal PURSUIT socks for year round everyday wear in Alabama. ) Prior to the introduction of the PURSUIT Ultralight, I purchased Swiftwick’s merino wool dress socks from Swiftwick’s clearance section as an experiment with the hopes of wearing them for mountain biking.

I found the dress socks to be really comfortable for mountain bike riding. However, I’ve started wearing holes in the toes and heel of the socks after approximately a year of regular use. I suppose this should be expected since the dress socks were not really designed for physical exercise.

The pair of PURSUIT Ultralight socks fit very well, and are even more comfortable for riding than the dress socks. I hope that the reinforced toe and heel will solve the issue of wear in the toes and heel.

The 7″ PURSUIT Ultralight will become my go to socks for gravel and mountain bike riding after I wear out the four pair of dress socks. It should be noted that I wear Swiftwick’s 4″ Aspire socks for road riding, and I have never had any issues with holes developing in the Aspire socks.

However, I developed a preference for taller, light weight wool socks for mountain biking because I typically ride more trail as the weather becomes cooler. I also got my first gravel bike in the winter months, and I started wearing the dress socks for gravel.

Even as the temperatures got warmer, I stuck with the dress socks mainly because of the 8″ height. The thin merino wool socks are very comfortable year round, and I plan to stick with the 7″ height PURSUIT Ultralight socks year round for gravel riding and mountain biking.

They feel good and they stay dry. They caused blisters. Blisters — never had blisters before on my feet. These have caused big blister on front bottom of right foot. I’ve had to stop walking for the last few days trying to heal.

I am a walker and I use trekking poles. Blister started, I guess looking back, about 1. 5 miles into a 4 mile walk. I purchased 7 pair and now I am not sure how to proceed. I washed them in cold water when received.

Let air dry. I have walked for 12 years using Speedo water shoes and Walmart MediPeds. This walk I used Speedo water shoes and Aspire One Military Compliant socks. Ended in blisters. A niece said to use moleskin.

I don’t know what that is and looking for other solutions too.

I am fussy about cycling socks, which I did not realize until I had a large collection of socks that I like for the graphics. but they just didn’t FEEL right! I kept buying more and more, looking for perfection.

I spent many hours googling every cycling sock under the sun, and the reviews led me to Swiftwick. I ordered two sizes of the Aspire to try; on paper I am an L but the M ended up being perfection. Cushy, short, not constricting.

I am still devastated that the Bianchi green was discontinued, but I am sure there will be cool colors going forward. And I honestly cannot imagine buying another cycling sock at this point. (I do need something in the rich red line to match that kit please!).

I bought a pair of these socks, a few years back, as I wanted a good “no show” sock that would stay up and I also wanted to give a wool sock a try. I think wool is super cool as it’s both a natural material and has good insulation characteristics.

Anyway, the sock worked out well. In the past, I’ve had issues with cotton “no show” socks like this fall back down, under my heel, but I haven’t had this problem at all with these FITS socks. I liked them so much I recently threw out all my older cotton socks and bought a bunch of these FITS socks.

They make up my entire collection of short socks now. They feel fine throughout the day. My feet tend to run hot but I haven’t had any issue with these socks.

Fits socks. The ONLY socks in my socks drawer. Found these at a local shoe store a few years ago. At first I was taken back by the price tag but decided to dive in anyway due to the feel and construction of the sock.

I have not turned back The light runners are great for summertime wear, general walking, and (for me) treadmill time. I wore these socks on all my vacations over the past few years. They’ve included cycling the Erie Canal, a hike in the mountains of northeastern New Mexico, a hikes at Glacier National Park, and recently, a vacation to Denali.

Fits socks go with me everywhere and the low, light runners are perfect for the warmer weather.

I called before placing my order online. I asked the customer service representative about any sales. The rep denied knowledge of any current or upcoming sales. Less than 24 hours after placing my order, I received email notice of a 20% off sale.

Arghh. RE: Ultra Light Runner No Show the chose on Website called Minimalist/ Packaging received calls it Women’s Style — The website says 66% Merino Wool content. The stickers on the packages I received (2 pair of these socks) says 73%.

The pair I purchased previously also says 73%. Which is it? — what the website says or what the sticker say? I use the FITS socks to manage symptoms of two vasospactic disorders I have in my feet. One of the disorders is very rare.

FITS socks are the only socks I am able to tolerate wearing for any signficant period of time.

Bought these as my 16 month old grandson does not stop running around on our tiled floors and we were so concerned about him slipping. They are lovely and warm and a good fit and do the job perfectly.

The only downside is they are too large for him to wear with his shoes so we have to put on normal socks when he goes out in his shoes.

These are great, they wear well, look cool – my son likes wearing one red and one blue at a time! You don’t seem to stock the red stripe anymore. We’re hoping the brand will increase the sizes available as my son grows into a teen.

(practically the only type of sock he has in his drawer).

These are the best baby socks. They have great elasticity even after washing so they stay on the feet all day. High quality, feels lovely and soft with non-slip grips on the bottom. I will be buying again!.

Excellent breathability and wear. Great6 all year round, even summer. I used to be a nothing button will do, kind of guy. But after wearing these wool socks for a few seasons, there’s no comparison.

Stay put in my western boots … don’t slide down. Just the right thickness. I am very happy with these socks.

I purchased these socks when they were on sale and I am very pleased with the quality and warmth. I use them for hunting as well as everyday wear.

These are definitely cold weather socks. They are thick, soft but not heavy. I had him try them for fit. he wears a size 12 shoe and these fir snuggly but not tight. Merino wool is the best for maintaining heat.

These will be great for skiing and other winter activities. Keeping your feet warm and dry is imperative in the cold. These socks are perfect for that purpose.

I’ve bought over 8 pairs of your socks. Great product. My only feedback would be to add tab to back of the ankle socks to help them from moving down to the heal when I’m running. If they had that feature I would probably never buy another brand of socks.

Good job on making a quality product. Very few companies do these days.

If you had seen me waiting for my 8 pack of wool ankle socks, you’d think I was a kid at Christmas waiting to unwrap all my goodies under the tree. Getting ready everyday can be a hassle, but the best part of my routine is putting these socks on my feet.

It’s the perfect mix of comfort and performance. They’re soft where they need to be and structured everywhere else. Being able to wear them all day with virtually no foot odor and come out the other end with dry feet is a HUGE plus as well.

I can’t recommend these enough.

I hate to give this style/size a 1 star but it caused me great discomfort. I’m a size 10. 5/11 (US) and it was recommended I purchase sock size Large. The sock is amazing, top shelf quality, BUT, the sock became extremely loose as my feet got sweaty during my run and shifted all over the place causing several blisters.

Very disappointing. I also own a size Medium which requires a bit of stretching before I wear them but they actually have a nice tight fit afterwards and stay in place nicely.

These have been my partner’s favorite socks for about a decade. I know it sounds crazy, but I think the manufacturing process or blend changed because nothing else in the way he wears them or washes them has- yet they’re riddled with holes after less than one month.

Perfect for my volunteer work on trails all over Colorado. Comfortable, wicking on both warmer and cooler days. Good stuff!

I’ve been using these socks for over 5 years. They give substantially the same ‘feeling’ as a pure wool sock, but with much greater durability. They’re quite nice to use either on or off the bike. Highly recommended !!.

They seem nice but I haven’t worn them a lot yet so I can’t give them a full 5 star review. However I wanted to let people know these run big!! I wear a size 7. 5 so I ordered a size medium and they were way too big.

I just got the size small today (which is labeled for womens size 4-6. 5) and they are even still just a smidge big. I think they might work up to a size 8!.

It’s so tight on the calve that it leaves deep marks. I wear 9 and got the L which is marked 9-11. 5, so you’d think that it’ll fit pretty loose. Can’t say anything about durability and comfort as I cannot wear them.

These are my new favorites! They are perfectly lightweight but warm, cute, and functional. Great for style, lounging, hiking, walking.

I bought one pair of these socks and really loved the fit and feel initially. They were very comfortable. I was hoping to buy more. but I am so glad that Myles didn’t have any more in my size (L/XL), because by the time I wore the socks ~8 to 10 times, they were wearing so thin.

I’m 1-2 wears away from full holes on my heels and the balls of my feet. I love a lot of Myles products, and really want to love these, but I’m basically paying $2 / day for these socks before they aren’t useful anymore.

That just doesn’t cut it for “athletic” socks. I should note, that I only wore these on one run. I have really just worn them as a casual sock to work.

I had a couple pairs of these socks that I took to Disney. It was 90 all week while we walked miles. The temperature regulation and quick drying capability of these socks were night and day to my “standard” store bought socks.

I bought a few more pairs while waiting in lines for the rides. They’re not cheap but if you’re feet are going to be hot and sweaty, put these on. You can thank me later.

I have tried all kinds of merino wool socks and these have possibly been the best. Many merino wool socks just don’t have a lot of stretch, but these hug my feel just right, and they are super soft. No rubbing seems, or sagging areas.

Thickness is on the medium thin side, so not for hiking, but great for casual wear. Length is just about over the ankle bone, which is where I like it. I have to admit that I added these to my cart just to make the free shipping minimum, but now I think I might have to get a few more pairs.

These are the most comfortable wool blend socks I’ve owned. Love the length and the extra comfort band around the arch. I wear these around the house constantly when the weather is cold and they last longer than many other national brands I’ve tried.

These became my go-to for chasing BIG Longbeards. My anklefits were digging in bad when walking long distances and I was getting blisters. These sock solved that issue with total comfort. and in a three pack!.

I’ve found my go-to wool socks! The Merino wool is soft and warm, the built in support is comfortable around the arch. Easy care wash and dry. Wish they came in a 7-pack. A+

The quality is up there with Darn Tough and they are great for normal wear. They still look new after 6 months of wear (I only wash on cold, never use fabric softener, and hang dry, just like all of my other merino wool).

I am only giving 4 stars because once boot season started back up, I found out that the cushion on the heel is nearly as good as Darn Tough on my 4 mile-a-day walking commute to work. My heels were on fire from friction– any more walking and I’d have had blisters.

That being said, these are far better than 95% of the socks out there and are great for most uses. I had them nearly 6 months before discovering that they are less than optimal for me walking in my boots.

Maybe the Duckworth hiking sock is a better fit for me– I may order a pair next time I reload on Duckworth underwear. FYI: I size up on these– I also size up on Darn tough, so If you are among the minority of people that need to size up on Darn Tough, than the same applies here.

Super soft and feels great on feet–zero itch. Subtle, dark blue stripes look great on the black. No odor after hours of wear, multiple times–turned inside out and aired them each time. When they smelled like feet I washed and machine dried (forgot if I was supposed to dry ’em that way–had a momentary panic) but they came out great–no shrink or pills after half a year.

(Honestly, I don’t care if wool pills, it’s flippin’ wool–come on now!) I should mention that Duckworth’s socks all stay up on my legs, no matter what the length. I love your product, Duckworth.

I’ve been wanting to transition into merino socks but haven’t been able to find something worth the full switch yet, especially for warmer weather hiking. Well look no further, these feel like you’re walking on clouds.

Light enough for your feet to breath but thick enough along the base to provide great padding. I will for sure be buying another set for longer trips into the back country to rotate pairs. Duckworth makes an incredible product, look forward to trying out more of their clothing!.

I’ve been converting most of my cycling clothing over to Velocio over the past year. I purchased two pairs of Winter Wool Socks. They felt great out of the box and loved the high cuff height for winter (and preferable height).

However, after one wash they went from 8 inches in height to about four inches. Still love the foot sole padding and would give them five stars if they didn’t shrink so much.

I ordered two pairs of socks (night and ultramarine) in small/medium. The socks are very different sizes. The ultramarine sock is a good fit but the night sock is significantly larger and does not fit well.

The photo is of the socks brand new. They have not been washed. But, they are final sale, so I can’t return them.

The sole has the perfect thickness and is warm enough for this year’s mild winter (no need for toe or shoe covers). I was disappointed that after one wash they went from 8-inch cuffs to about 4-inch cuffs.

It’s not a problem with leg warmers, but shorter-length socks are not my style if wearing shorts or knee warmers.

These socks are touted as “non binding”, “soft” and “comfortable”. WELL. They are a bit tight around my “skinny-normal” calves; they are certainly not soft and only reasonably comfortable. That said, I just ordered another pair.

Why? Well, my experience in trying to buy soft, comfortable, non-binding around the calf, wool socks is that I can’t find anybody that makes them like that. Mostly, the problem is that they are so narrow that they are impossible to get on, and then they strangle your calf.

THESE socks, are not perfect but much better in these areas mentioned, hence the second pair. In short, after much looking over time, these are the best (wool) socks I have come up with. The very best COTTON socks are VCS’s “diabetic” dress socks.

They are really great and I am not diabetic. In fact I don’t even see why they call them that. So, again, these wool socks in question are “pretty good”. Recommend you check them out.

I have bought these for years and they are wonderful. I am a 66 year old girl with very wide feet. I wear a tH9 or 10 in women’s shoes when I can find 100% leather. My cowboy boots are men’s 71/2 D. I take a large in these socks.

They are thin (giving me more room in my shoes and boots) yet warm. Here in Central Texas I find them too warm for summer. I do have to take a seam ripper to the top to remove 2 little elastic threads at the top.

The socks stay up fine without them. My 45 year old son wears a 9B and the large also works for him, but he must wear thicker wool socks in the winter to keep warm.

My husband has developed edema in his feet in recent years and all his socks had become uncomfortably tight and restricting, because his feet are now larger due to the fluid accumulation. So we set out to purchase various brands of socks and knee highs, but none met all his needs until we came across these “Goldilocks” socks, because they meet his needs 100%.

He wears size 10 1/2 EEE shoes and the Extra Large socks are a perfect fit for him, after laundering. The top of the socks is truly non binding and yet the socks stay up all day. Great none itching Merino wool, great color and great design.

My husband finds these socks very comfortable. We are very pleased with this purchase and will soon order more.

OK full disclosure, wool socks in the summer what are you daft? Boy was I wrong! Quick back story purchase a non-no fly zone version of this sock three years ago by mistake they sat in my sock draw ever since.

Got behind on the laundry was heading out on a hike and these “wool socks” were my only clean socks [got a thing about wearing clean socks]. Fast forward after a day of hiking about 15 miles my feet were cool and comfortable.

I was amazed. Purchased six more to test out my find and again great results. Purchase a laundry load and never looked back! These socks are laundered with hot water and heavy cycle and the ware so far has been outstanding as has been the fit and finish.

Kicking myself for not trying the miss-purched pair earlier! Highly recommend trying a pair.

I rarely ever write a poor review of LLBean products, but I was disappointed in these socks. My husband has been wearing this style for some years, and they have always held up well, until recently. The two or three pairs we’ve bought in the last year have worn out quickly, especially on the heels and ball of the foot areas.

Probably in less than a dozen wearings, they are worn out. We also bought a pair of ragg socks a few months ago, which he wore about 3-4 times around the house (on carpeted floors) before they developed huge holes in them.

Not sure what’s happened here. The quality of the past is very much lacking. I can’t recommend them, as much as I would like to. On the plus side, they were comfortable, and the size fit well.

I ordered three pairs of these lightweight quarter socks in XL sizing. LL Bean characterizes XL (extra large) as fitting sizes 13-15. I wear a size 13 shoe and these “extra large” socks were far too short straight out of the bag.

I washed one pair inside-out, in cold water, and dried on ultra low heat. The result is a sock short to the point of being entirely unwearable. These socks might honestly qualify as Large but never as Extra Large.

Adding insult to injury, LL Bean expects me to pay for the return shipping of their incorrectly sized product!.

These were too big for my feet to begin with, with the toe box area especially wide, and the calf area especially tight (even though I don’t have much there?), although I followed the size chart. I washed them as instructed- inside out, tumble dry low, hoping they would shrink a bit, and one of them shrank.

Just one. ! How does that happen?! So one fits better, and the other stayed the same. There is a seam *inside*, above your toe line, that happens to be the burnt synthetic material. It’s hard and scratchy, not something mildly annoying I can look past, as I would have to stop and adjust while hiking if it rubbed up against the wrong place to prevent blisters.

I have not worn them out due to this. My socks also do not look like these colors close up- the stitching is more random with blue in the grey and grey in the blue. Overall I’m disappointed in the construction of this product.

I will update if the performance is anything to note. IMO, if I’m going to pay $20 for socks shouldn’t have such a harsh seam, and they should fit my feet! #bummed.

I recently decided to restart hiking, after over a decade of not. I need all new gear and thought these socks would fit my needs. First, they’re inexpensive compared to wool socks. Second, they’re synthetic.

Third, they look cool. Anyway, I tried them on in the store and they fit. I also tried Darn Tough socks but their sizes are not accurate. Regardless, I purchased the REI co-op socks and washed them. After one wash and not wearing them, they are already fuzzy.

This indicates to me that they’re not as high quality as I hoped. If they’re already coming apart after one wash, how well will they hold up on a weekend or longer hike? I’m a bit concerned and don’t think I’ll use them now.

Thankfully, REI will take them back. I’m not sure what I’m going to do now because the Darn Tough socks are either way too big or way too small, at least the socks I tried on were. Anyway, these could be an affordable and quality pair of socks, but given the indication they’re already coming apart I would not recommend purchase.

Maybe I just got a bad pair? Who knows.

I’m 71 and bought these boots for wet weather fitness hiking. Surprised how comfortable they were first time out right out of the box. After 2 separate hour long walks it was time to play golf so decided to wear the boots for 18 holes.

On the golf course it’s 4 hours on my feet walking and hitting golf shots, the boots were tremendously comfortable. Two days later played golf at McCormick Woods wearing the Cross Hikes. McCormick is a tough hilly course to walk in the summer when its nice and dry.

The course had standing water on most holes and was mostly saturated. Walked right through several winter time creeks and all kinds of mud. feet stayed completely dry. The Cross Hikes are great for hiking and I’m quite sure I’ll never buy another pair of golf shoes! Come April I’ll buy a pair of low Cross Hikes for summer golf.

Bombas are my favorite socks. I was gifted some after I had showed interest in them and I have been obsessed ever since. It’s been probably 7 years now at least since I was gifted a pair and I still have them and wear them regularly once a week.

They have no holes or seams ripping apart. They are not thinning either. So durable and comfortable. Yes, they are pricey, but clearly it’s because they are meant to last unlike most socks on the market.

In my opinion, they are worth the money. Either buy these and they last you as long as they’ve lasted me or spend the same amount of money replacing your current cheaper socks once a year or so. No brainer for me.

I will continue to buy Bombas.

These socks are truly no show. They have a nice amount of cushion on the bottom, which is hard to find with no show socks. They also have rubber grippy material on the back so the socks will stay put over your lower heel.

This socks are a bit pricey but they are worth it to me. They are very good quality. I recommend them!.

These are the perfect summer socks. They are true no shows with cushion to them. Plus the extra cushion on the heel helps protect your ankle. The medium fits a little more snug than the regular ankle socks.

I sized up to a large for a better fit. My shoes size is 9. 5 to 10 in women.

These are very nice socks, comforatable and warm. They wear quite well and my feet don’t sweat. My biggest problem is that they have gotten tight on my legs. They are not stretchy enough and very hard to put on! I have 5 pairs and all are not very stretchy.

I have tried to return, but they have no warranty to speak of – I am ashamed that they are made in the USA. I have boughten 2 pairs of Red Wing boots per year, for the last 33 years and been very happy with them.

I pushed at my company to include Red Wing as an option for all employees.

I have a singe pair that was added to my boot purchase. These are the best socks I’ve ever had. Five years later, they’re still in great shape. They have a small hole at the big toe (because I don’t keep my nails clipped) otherwise perfect.

I’ve tried to find cheaper alternatives, but nothing I’ve tried works as well. I’m back ordering another pair, now.

If you know, you know. There really isn’t much better than this. Insanely comfortable, good in all weather, durable and long lasting. Will only ever wear these for hiking and work.
