20 Best Thread For Serger (2022 Updated)

This thread was recommended for looper threads by an FB group on serging and coverstitching – adds the right amount of stretch to knit seams. Just started coverstitching and the stitches are perfect.

Arrived in excellent condition and well packed.

I needed this thread to repair a pair of good gloves I’ve had for years. I’ve bought stretch thread befor, it didn’t hold. This is just perfect!

nice thread but i must have ordered the wrong stuff. I needed std maxi lock thread not the stretch like woolly product. oh well. will try again later

I have sewn with Maxi-Lock thread on my sergers for 20 years. Maxi-Lock almost never breaks or has thick spots that mess up the tension. Very reliable. Tried several other brands – easier to find, less expensive or exciting colors.

I keep returning to Maxi-Lock because I can depend on it to let me serge without problems or delays re-threading. If I need an odd color that may show on the outside of the finished seam line (serging on the wrong side), I use a spool of regular thread in that color for the left-side needle (doesn’t take much thread) and cones of a neutral color Maxi-lock for the other needle and the loopers.

If the serging will show, as with rolled or serged edges, I look for a nice complementary or contrasting color in my Maxi-Lock stash. Forget a lower quality thread even if it matches better – an edge is not the place you want to have problems and messy restarts.

I serge on both an old, fairly strong, mid-priced serger and a light-duty, inexpensive machine I bought last year. Both machines have the same results with different threads. Maxi-Lock always wins. Delighted to find Maxi-Lock available on-line from JoAnn’s in a wide range of colors at a great price.

I have been sewing for almost 60 years, serging for 20. I have noticed that the quality of thread in general has been declining for at least 5 years, including Maxilock. Older cones seem to have smoother, more consistent thread.

The ones I have purchased in the past year are labeled inside the cone as being “processed in the US from China yarn”. The quality is inferior. BUT I have purchased 4 other brands of serger thread in the past 2 years and they have all been worse.

I have had breakage with other brands, but NOT with MaxiLock. Why are the first 8 reviews that come up under “most relevant” on JoAnn’s website very negative and many very old, up to eleven years ago? They do not reflect the average Overall Rating of over 4.

They are not current. I don’t think they are a fair representation. Who decides what is “relevant? I strongly believe this thread deserves at least it’s rating of 4 out of 5. I gave it 5 because I think it’s the best that’s readily available.

I bought this for my sister in Wisconsin, who had been using a LOT of the smaller spools of thread to sew with. But, as she got to sewing more things and bigger things, she started running out of thread at an alarming rate.

It was getting expensive for her to go to the store (30 miles away) and get the small spools. So l bought these for her to cut down on her trips to the store. I also figured out that ONE cone thread about equaled TWELVE regular spools, so it was CHEAPER, too!! AWESOME value for those who sew A LOT!! She now knows that she can get the cones for about the same price as the smaller spools and can make fewer 30 mile trips to the store to get more.

Item was delivered in a timely manner and I was able to continue working on my quilt project

This thread is made to withstand the high speeds of a Serger. It does not leave lint to clog the feed dogs of my Serger.

My original choice was not in stock but the alternative suggested was very well suited and I will take the advice offered when I use Tanya again

Best serger thread at the best price anywhere. Will be getting more colors from you. I’m using it in my cover stitch machine and no longer having problems with skipped stitches. Anyone who has one of these machines knows what I am talking about.

And absolutely ruined my day. I’m new to serging. Only about my third project with my new machine. Bought two spools of turquoise for the loopers. Couldn’t figure out why my looper threads kept breaking.

I rethreaded everything several times, changed needles, cleaned the machine, even removed the needle plate to inspect underneath. Finally I examined the thread. It was cut in many places, and the thread was weak and irregular in other places, breaking every yard or so.

What a pain, and a wasted afternoon of what should have been a really fun and easy project.

Checking out the sale price of Maxilock in the Joann’s ad and was surprised to see the negative comments about quality. I’ve been sewing for years and years. Serging for the last 20 years. I used many brands of thread at first.

Never had a Maxilock problem. I sometimes use a specialty thread for a specific item but for regular sewing and quilting it’s only Maxilock. Price varies a lot.

That’s it. The best when used with superior bottom line for the bottom for a fine seam when piecing. No bulk!

I started piecing 2 different quilt tops today. This thread is thin so it helps in making finer seams. it is also very strong and very low in lint. I absolutely love it and will be using it exclusively to piece all of my future quilt tops.

It stands up very well to a hot iron. It is by far Superior to any other thread I have used.

It’s really good thread! I was able to make my whole 1920’s dress with this thread and no issue at all. 10/10 recommend. Also do you see just how much it comes with? Uh? Yeah.

I had ran out of black thread so when I saw that Michaels carried the coats come thread I was glad that I didn’t have to make an extra stop to purchase it. I buy the cone thread in colors that I use a lot of for regular sewing projects to make it fit my regular sewing machine I stick an empty spool inside the cone so it will fit and not wobble while I am sewing.

Reliable quality thread. I have 4 cones for my serger and didn’t want to move them to the coverstitch machine. Grateful Michael’s has it in stock in store as they are my closest and most convenient craft store.
