20 Best Thread For Upholstery (2022 Updated)

The threads are extremely strong. The color tone, hues, and saturation appear to be of high quality. I bought this product mainly for leather saddles, boots, gun holsters, and canvas. I rated this product 3/5 mainly because the threads produce excess lent in the bottom front load bobbin case.

This is my fault. I installed a thread lubricator, which solved the problem.

The spool comes tightly wound with no sloughing at all. It threads through all the guides and the needle smooth and consistently. Bobbin winding is tight and even with no looping. The color is completely saturated and very consistent.

I use this thread to reconfigure windsurf sails for land yachting which requires a strong consistent thread for worry-free modifications to existing sails. This type of use demands a high quality thread that you can rely on while performing this brutal task.

I’m sure any lesser thread would be unacceptable and create nothing but problems. I originally bought this thread just to try it out and was pleasantly surprised that it was up to the task. I’m sure I will be buying it again!.

It’s OK maybe good for the price, but as someone who worked in both recreational and commercial fabric trades. It is not bonded and has a tendency to unravel and kink. I setup a 1 1/2 foot high vertical pull which helped the thread pull off the spool more evenly.

If you use an 18 or larger needle you should be OK.

Great blending colour (grey). Doesnt tangle or shred during sewing. I use a Milliners needle size 11 and flat-back whip stitch. May seem fine compared to other sewing thread, but is strong. Would be good for appliqu too.

Fantastic thread to use for patchwork as well as appliqu. It almost disappears into the fabric when hand stitching. You only need this shade as it blends in with all fabric colours. Very strong and doesn’t seem to knot at all.

Haven’t used it on machine so can’t comment.

This thread is the one used by the professionals, and they use it with great results at their classes, everyone wants some when they see the beautiful outcome. I use the gray colour one mostly. I use it with small English paper piecing, I am doing my C&G in Quilting and Patchwork and miniature patchwork is a requirement for the Diploma.

This gives a lovely lightweight smooth finish to my work. Essential thread for lots of different things.

This thread is very thick and strong. Use it where strength matters or you want a visible/decorative stitch. I use it for hand sewing wear-leathers on saddle blankets and also some tack repairs. The only negative I’ve found, is because it’s pretty thick, if you are repairing something that has smaller, pre-punched holes, this might be too thick and give you a lot of trouble getting the needle through the leather.

In other words, might not be good for repairing bridles or anything with petite stitches. But this is awesome for wear-leathers, nosebands on hackamores, heavy-duty repairs, things like that.

I have been braiding my horse, and others at shows for a couple years. I probably braid about 50+ manes per show season. I bought one of each three colors last spring before show season, and I still am using them! I will be replacing before long just to ensure I don’t have a gap, but I honestly don’t expect to run out before the end of this year.

The thread is very sturdy, well waxed, and holds the braids nice and tight. I would definitely recommend this, it seems expensive, but lasts a long time and works great!.

I did not use this product for a horse. I am African American and I was watching YouTube ran across a video on African Braiding I needed a thread that I could not fine; so I thought about the horses and how the manes are spruced up so I decided to order and I am truly glad that I did.

I did not want to use acrylic yarn. This is a great substitute and it works better than weaving thread. Great purchase and will buy again.

I love this thread and so does my 45 year old sewing machine. I sew purses and bags as a hobby and it works for beautiful top stitching on pleather and cork fabrics. I like the price and that I can purchase locally.

I purchased some flannel a month ago anf I’m just loving it. Joanns always has a great selection to choose from. I will definitely be back for more. And thank you to the nice ladies at the cutting counter.

This thread does not cut when U use the cutter on ur Sewing machine, you hve to cut it with Scissors, I bought these threads 2 sew cases, I use heavy material.

This thread was strong enough to repair a small carpet that I have in my entryway of my home. It is such good quality, doesn’t fray, holds the pieces that I put it to, and blended seamlessly into the materials.

I was a little apprehensive to use this on my carpet because it does get a lot of use, however it held up without any problems. I also made some potholders and tea towels as gifts for friends and I had to use a thread that I knew would be strong enough and not fall apart.

How embarrassing would that be to give a gift that falls apart after a few washes! Those tea towels that I made are getting a lot of use and holding up just like new thanks to using it! Coats and Clark is always my go to thread for any of my sewing needs because it is reliable, strong, and comes in many colors and strengths.

It’s just not worth using a bad and cheaply spun product when you want to have the best!.

I do a lot of hand quilting and will only use Coats & Clark Dual Plus hand quilting thread. The thread is great to work with. It goes easily through 2 layers of material and 1 layer of cotton batting.

The thread is strong so I don’t have to worry about it breaking in the middle of my quilting yet looks great. I recommend Coats & Clark dual plus thread to all my quilting friends.

Wow. This was a quick need-to-fix-immedietly buy and I was thouroghly impressed with how well the quality was with this thread! I actually decided to work on a another project with it because I was having fun.

I’ve never really hand sewn anything that lasted long. This will guarantee longer life for my stitches!!.

I am reupholstering an old chair and wanted to do it right using upholstery fabric, upholstery thread, etc. so the finished product would hold up for years, which is why I chose this thread. It will hardly work in my little used old Brother Riviera machine.

the thread constantly breaks, I can hardly sew a couple inches without a strand or two breaking and the bottom thread messing up. I bought some upholstery needles (#16 and #18) to use with this thread when I bought it (I’m using the #18).

When I first put it in the machine I sewed some tests to check the tension and adjusted it. the results, when I sewed on the project, was as stated above. I don’t believe it is the machine since a year ago I turned some hand towels into wash clothes with no problems (I sewed a hem on the terry cloth fabric 3 layers thick) using regular thread.

This thread is heay duty, tho.

I make work pants. I’ve tried many different types of thread but wasn’t happy with the abrasion resistance of other so called heavy duty threads. I purchased this thread on a whim and am very happy with it.

If you choose to use this thread, I recommend changing to a size 18 needle with a relief groove. Without the groove the machine labors more than it should. Also be aware that MUCH LESS yardage will fit on your bobbin.

I consider it a small price to pay for an article of clothing that will hold up to years in an industrial environment.

Although I was seriously frustrated with the shredding I experienced, I was using a regular needle. Since I changed to a needle with a larger eye (top stitch 16/100 in my case, although I’d think most any needle of appropriate size with a larger eye would work), the thread has been flawless for my project.

Therefore, if you use a larger eye needle you should be happy with the thread.

I bought the strong thread (on 30 metre reels). The fine thread is on 100 m reels. Once I got my head round this I could then order the correct thread for me. The listings aren’t always that clear on this aspect.

Choosing the correct colour is a bit hit and miss, as the listings sometimes list the colours by the Gutermann colour code (“000” is black!). Once I got the right thread and the right colour I was able to start my work.

The thread seems to be good quality, with no lumps or weak patches, in my experience. My thread was strong enough and the colour was consistent. There were two areas which caused me slight problems, but these are probably common to all makes of thread.

Firstly, sometimes there was a tendency for the thread to twist into loops as I pulled it through, and secondly, the loose end tended to unravel slightly after many stitches. Full marks for the fantastic design of the reels, which had little locking tabs round the periphery at one end, which held the free end and stopped the thread unravelling off the reel.

This is a much better system than found on cotton reels of old. The reels themselves are longer and of smaller diameter than traditional UK reels. I do not know if this is a problem for sewing machines, as I have not investigated this.

Allin all, I think 5 stars is justified.

I love these 1000m reels from Gütermann. They are more economic than buying the smaller reels and last for ages – no running out half way through a project! A selection of greys and naturals will cover a lot of colours so big reels of these basics are a good purchase.

I also pop it on my overlocker – only on the needle stitching position, if I need a good match. All round great quality thread for most sewing.

My beloved fella had unfortunately ripped his work pants right up the crotch, giving his poor colleagues a view they really didn’t need to see. Being the self sufficient, modern man he is, he had a bash at sewing them up himself resulting in much swearing, needlestick injury and somehow sewing his pants to my current knitting project.

Nevertheless, he persisted and proudly set off the next morning with no draughty drawers. Sadly, the stitching did not persist and yet again his under crackers were on display to all and sundry. Climbing ladders became even more of a danger to both his safety and dignity.

It seemed inevitable that his pants were consigned to the bin. However! All was not lost. On a recent trip to Hobbycraft I spotted this super strong thread. Could this be the answer? Could I succeed where he had failed? Could his nether regions be finally protected and safe from the elements and the horrified gaze of the general public? Reader, yes.

So far they have survived Storms Ciara and Dennis, and a catastrophic Cabinet reshuffle with not even a glimmer of daylight visible. He’s delighted. I’m delighted. All is well with the universe.

This is the BEST HEAVY DUTY THREAD EVER!! My puppy chewed up the end of my couch and I went looking EVERYWHERE for Button Twist, could not find. Went home and fixed hole with regular thread, which did NOT hold so I gave up.

While out shopping, I went by Michaels and actually just RAN ACROSS this and HAD to give it a try. What a God send! Sturdy, holds the hole together, and the thread matches PERFECTLY – can not tell there was ever a hole there.

AND, it comes in different colors and the price is GREAT. Am just SOOO HAPPY I ran across this – would HIGHLY recommend for fixing, repairing, mending and anything you DON’T WANT TO COME APART!.

This was great. I had qn old magnifying glass that is house in a leather pouch and attached by a rivet. The leather had come apart. The old thread was no longer holding it. The leather was a dark brown and the rim of the glass is red I bought the read thread to match.

It looks great and this thread did the trick. You shouldnt use cotton thread on leather because over time it will break down.

so my boyfriend and I started this kittle project. I say little but it was becoming super stressful the machine kept jamming on the thick fabric ir so I thought. cone to find out he didnt get upholstery thread the first time.

I had to show him by feel how different they really were! This product has not failed me yet. i dont think it ever will!.

I used this thread on vinyl coated polyester fabric that I used to make new patio chair slings. It sewed like a dream! I used a leather 110/18 needle and dialed the upper tension down to zero on my 27 year old Bernina 830.

I whipped out the 3 slings in no time and my machine handled this heavy thread very well.

This is an unbonded threat that WILL NOT WORK in my sewing machine, the threat fibers divide as the needle forms the loop and the hook splits the thread and jams.

Needed some heavy thread for a nylon shoulder strap that broke and this worked just fine. Thanks

This is my go-to thread for sewing! This thread is the best quality thread I’ve been able to find. It is strong and smooth and doesn’t have the little “fuzz” that some other cheaper threads have. There are various sizes and colors that suit all of my sewing needs!.

I was recommended Gutermann Sew-All for a satin dress I am sewing. The teal color matched my fabric perfectly, so I decided to use it. I have a vintage sewing machine, and the fabric is lightweight. I have never had problems with thread breaking in my machine before.

First, I bought a spool and I could barely go 3 feet before the thread broke. I was able to easily break the thread with my bare hands. I thought it was a rotten spool, so I bought two more spools from another location.

Again, the thread broke after a few feet. I have tried with cotton and polyester fabric, thinking it was my machine. and still the thread breaks. I’ll be sticking to my regular brand, which works fine.

I needed a few new thread colors for a project I was doing in a class, and I noticed the instructor using Gutermann thread. I don’t usually get this brand because it’s more expensive, but it happened to be on sale the day I stopped in so I decided to try it, and I’m so glad I did.

I can tell the thread is a higher quality than I usually use–it feels stronger, the thread is a consistent thickness, and it was easy to find colors to match my fabric perfectly. Not that my previous thread was bad (I’ve used it for years), but this feels like a step up.

After using it, I’d say Gutermann is worth the extra cost, but I’ll still be watching for future sales to stock up on new colors!.

Purchased for a 2006 Dodge ram Cummins. I needed a pair of these. Pre charged, direct fit. Only downside, they used Yodel to deliver so the box was naturally battered to bits. But battery was undamaged and well packaged.

I purchased this thread trying to conjure a miracle. Imagine trying to attach a metal harness to straps and nothing works. Hot glue. fail. Super glue. fail. Desperately trying to complete a cosplay that involves a 3 foot long “tail” 2 nights before it needs to be worn for many hours, I was hoping for a miracle.

Finding this tread and using all of my hand sewing skills worked in a pinch. Each stitch held strong and the color blended perfectly. I broke needles before I snapped any of this thread. I fully recommend.

I love coats and clark thread. I began sewing a few months ago and noticed that thread matters! I started off with a thread that was on sale and it just kept breaking when I was working on my project.

However, I tried coats and clark and they worked perfectly. Also, the thread is reasonably priced. There are more expensive thread options that work just as well as this one. In addition, I went through my mom’s old sewing kit and I saw she had coats and clark threads that she bought years ago! I also love the many color options available.

You just found the best thread for any job. Think thread is just thread. think again. This company saw some simple issues and improved the spool design. They made the top edge of the spool detachable so you can confidently snap the thread inside it so it can weather any bottom of the purse no tangle ever again.

We all find ourselves sitting down to sew and once again forgot the pin cushion. Where can i stick my needle. Not the dangerous between the teeth method. Dual duty has a pre sliced opening ovobver the circle in the spool so when you inevitably go to stick it in there, you are pleasantly shocked they beat you to that idea.

This thread is durable and never snags. Ultimate multipurpose for any fabric. Not enough good things to say. Its the last thread you’ll ever try.
