10 Best Tip Up Line (2022 Updated)

I am giving this flyline five stars for the value alone. Let’s face it this is not Rio or scientific anglers flyline so it’s not going to be the best. But, for what it is it’s pretty darn good flyline.

I have only fished with it on a few occasions thus far and am pleased with it’s performance. I am using this line for targeting blugill ,and it works just fine. Having the backing already attached is a nice bonus.

The welded loop sure does make it easy for attaching leaders. Great line for the budget conscience angler. I hope this review will help.

It’s still early on, but I love how smooth and accurate this line casts. Also the price for fly line and backing made this one from KastKing a no brainer. I bought this to go on my backup reel when I take people with me, but after testing it out it has become my primary.

I am more than pleased with the KastKing Propel fly line!! It is an excellent value compared to other brands and it even comes with backing ready to spool! Also KastKing incorporated the biospool that’s biodegradable!! That’s a big deal for me!!!.

Really helps turn over larger and more water resistant flies on my 4wt with a commando tip. Keen to get a few more of different sink rates to add to the collection.

I needed to find a set of micro tips in a range of sink rates for fishing a mini Commando head on a single handed rod. thought I was going to have to make up my own when I found the OPST set available from an excellent on-line shop, fine-flies, in Germany.

Perfect!.

I was really excited to get this shoe/slipper. But, I couldn’t take two steps without them flipping off my heel, making them impossible to wear. Bummer! They run true to size as I own several pair of Sanuk shoes.

But, the heel fabric is soft and with the Sherpa lining, they just don’t stay on.

this line has been the perfect addition to my 6wt TFO deer creek switch rod. the pair work amazingly together and don’t overweight the rod. from the smaller flies to the big streamers it does it all.

I was reccommended this line system from a friend of mine. And once i learned to cast with it. Wow talk about a nice casting set-up. I have mine paired with a 12′ switch rod and really enjoy using it.

This is the smoothest casting line that I have ever bought. I was able to make some of the longest longest,most accurate casts of my life. I was fishing for trout on a river in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

The water was low,cold,and clear. At first I worried that the line would be too heavy, and that it would spook the trout that were clearly visible in the cold, clear water. I needn’t have worried, Yes, the trout swam away from the line to avoid it, but they then turned to attack the wet fly that was trailing behind ! All in all, I caught, and released ,7 nice rainbow trout in the space of less than an hour.

It was an awesome day, and I can’t be more pleased with this line. Another fine product from the people at Scientific Anglers !.

These are great lines. I use them in multiple line weights and densities, from 7wt on lakes to 10wt for river predators. On note: they don’t take up much space on the reel, so they are best used on reels with lots of backing.

Looks a little sparse when I swap it on my reel that usually houses a Titan Long.

nice specialty line. use to fish shallow in weedy lakes right over weed beds. compares well with the Rio brand weight forward float/sink tip line called the “streamer tip” which appears not be produced any longer.

dont know why?? floating line with 10ft intermediate clear sink tip. slightly stiffer than the rio and slightly more memory, but a very nice line. this line has a 15 ft clear tip vs. the old rio”s 10 ft clear tip.

Great easy casting like line. Pairs well with my fast action rod and doesn’t feel clunky. Has worked great for bass fishing from a boat and I’m sure it will work well when I fish trout !

Great line for Stripers, bluefish, and other aggressive cold water species. It is capable of throwing large flies long distances. More importantly, it sinks well, allowing the angler to fish where the fish are.

This line is set up perfectly for salt water fly fishing in cold water. Ive been fly fishing for 3 years, so I’d consider myself a beginner. This line casts very easy and smooth. What I like is that the line glows in the dark, so when I’m fishing for stripers at night, I can see where I’m casting.

I had an all around good experience purchasing from this company. I ordered online and when I realized I had only ordered 1 of the 3 sink tips I wanted they were able to combine shipping on the second order with the initial order.

I am excited about using single handed skaget casting for smallmouth this summer.

Having a dodgy shoulder, means I need an easier option to push the flies out further, and into wind etc. This sort of approach kind of blew my mind – easy pick up & single back cast, and it punches out 40 – 50 feet no dramas.

It;s not subtle, and it does make some noise on the pick up, but the idea is to bring it in to the beginning on the shooting bit before you lift. Anyway, I tried it on the flats just practising, and now (once the lock down is lifted) it;s off to the lakes.

Next purchase will be some floating tips for this line and put some big dries out there.

The line is excellent and suits my 4wt Redington Hydrogen Trout Spey rod well. Great service from Tom’s Outdoors with a very quick delivery time.

Excellent casting line!!!. Weighted tip helps to shoot the line Out…Slow sinking rate is ideal for the surf as it sinks below the surface waves.

I’ve been running this on my 7wt Helios 3d for the whole season, mostly with streamers on lakes, and have officially started looking for a different line. To be fair, this is just what the Orvis guys set me up with at the store when I got the rod, and I should have done my homework.

So firstly, I like a line that allows me to do a short ~20’ roll cast pickup and then aggressively shoot a good 30-40’ of additional line without having to false cast. This line is definitely not it.

I find that I end up having to compensate by using longer roll casts and then can shoot maybe an additional 20’ max without issue. Too often, though, I either have to false cast once, which is a messy prospect with any sinking line, or let it land short of my target.

I think probably the two main reasons for this are an ineffective taper design, at least for my rod, and a surface that is not so smooth against the guides. I can often hear it whistling through the guides and feel the friction during my retrieve.

As far as the overall design, I like the idea of three separate weights, but having a 30’ head section with almost no variable taper negates any advantage that would give. Even if the middle section were floating it probably wouldn’t affect how it fished.

Realistically I would like a more aggressive front taper with 15-20’ of heavy sinking then another 15’ or so of 3ips, then intermediate running. Good concept, but it needs tweeked. Lastly, I wish the color difference between the head and mid section were better.

The dark gray next to dark green looks pretty much the same unless you are really looking closely under good light. But then again, the taper is such that I never really feel a “sweet-spot” for shooting like I do other lines, so in the end the transition is irrelevant.

Overall I would not recommend this line for the Helios 3D, and probably not for most other setups either.

I love this fly line, which might be why it’s saddled up on literally every fly rod I own. I’ve used several competitive brands and, simply put, this line out performs them from an accuracy and drag perspective.

It floats well in various conditions and has an appropriate belly for the kind of casting I like to do. Having said all of that, I’ve had to replace this line more than once within a season on more than one of my fly rods because of cracking and separation at the welded loop.

It’s very likely a result of something I am doing during the cast, but I’ve (we’ve?) got to get to the bottom of what’s causing it. I still think this the best fly line I’ve used; just need to figure out how to avoid spending $130 on a fly line more than once inside of a season.

Me and my buddy have been Orvis fans for decades, and still are. We have tested the #6 PRO Trout – Textured on lakes and rivers with the Helios 3D rod (a perfect rod !), and sadly we cannot agree with very positive comments this line has received.

Pro’s Flies in the air perfectly, very nice end loops Floats high on the water, easy to retrieve. Makes a nice noise through the runners from the textured (personal preference) Low resistance on the rod runners while retrieving Cons It just does not cast ! There is something wrong with the weight and the balance of the sections.

We needed considerable effort, and even then the distance was mediocre. We tried it on a different selection of #5 and #6 rods, and the result was not much different. After half a day of strenuous casting, sore shoulders had us give up.

Take for example the Hydros Bank shot, maybe not as elegant in its flight movement and landing on the water, but with just one back cast, we could cast further than four to five back and forth with the textured line.

Conclusion This line is now retired, and definitely not worth the nearly double of say the Bank shot. It might come out for showcase swimming pool casting, but not for catching trout.

It needs a thermal cover. I’ve seen some that you can buy but I think you could make one out of construction foam. My tip-up froze up so quickly on a cold, windy day that it created a problem. It had froze the shaft and the fish spun the reel and tightened to top nut (spring) so far that it wouldn’t spin.

I discovered that it needed to be loosened quite by accident. I wish there was some instruction on the cover to show what to do.

I live on a lake and I do quite a bit of ice fishing, and this is my favorite tip up. It’s simple, can be seen from a long distance, and I personally have never had one freeze up. I’ve never caught a really huge pike on one, so time will tell if it can handle it, but so far no problems.

I’ve bought and tried one of the round insulated ones, and I hated it. I’ll just stick with this one.

I have been using these tip ups for over 25 years, I have 6 of them, and 4 of them are over 25 years old, and still work like new. It’s by far the most popular with all my friends and relatives, and, it’s the one you see most often here in southern MN.

There’s reasons for this: rugged, ease of set up, compact storage, adjustable trip tension, inexpensive, and they don’t freeze up and not work, or freeze down to the ice. I check my tip ups often to make sure my bait hasn’t been stolen, so hole freeze over is not an issue for me.

A great product that works as it should!.

I contacted OPST customer support with my switch rod make and model. They pointed me towards the OPST commando head and this floating tip. Product is working as expected per OPST advice.
