20 Best Tippet For Trout (2022 Updated)

I rarely leave a review because, well, it is just one more distraction from my daily to-do list. But these guys are really worth it. I was very pleased to find MFRC when I was looking for some unpopular supplies.

They had exactly what I needed, at a great price and I loved the free shipping. By far the best deal I could find. Even better, it was shipped the same day and I got it fast. I really couldn’t ask for more and I will certainly use them again.

Not my favorite premium quality 6x fluorocarbon tippet to date. Its very strong, it holds knots very well, its a little more supple than most fluorocarbon tippet materials. However it tends to get curly easier than other fluorocarbon tippet.

I use 6x 90% of the time so I am careful with my knots and even unspooling tippet because I hate curling tippets. I even took off the silicone band around spool and replaced with the soft ponytail holder type band, the silicone band seemed to cause the tipper to come off the spool with waves in it.

Its not so much from knots but any hard stretch or twist of the tippet puts a curl in it that cannot be completely removed by further stretching or friction. This material would probably be outstanding in 4x or stronger as its supple and would probably be hard to curl at that thickness.

Been on the river 4 time now and still using the same leader with the same tippet ring. They are small, float with the fly and unnoticeable. Absolutely had no impact on strikes and hook ups. These tippet rings will save you dollars and dollars on tapered leaders.

The 2mm rings are hard to thread when they are on the snap swivel and you are on the water. The good news is that they work!

Strong, handles the shock of explosive runs and solid strikes. Doesn’t shimmer on the surface when casting dry flies and is soft and supple to give a natural drift. Well worth the purchase

After trying several different brands of tapered leaders and tippet line I’ve settled on Rio Powerflex Plus. It is by far the strongest while retaining the same diameter dimensions of other lines. It very supple and knots hold well.

This makes buying tippet and leaders easy, I don’t have to decide what brand to purchase,.

In my humble opinion the best dry fly tippet on the market. Very soft and supple so you get those drag free drifts. Also has great knot strength and doesnt kink when you pull up the knots.

I like this product a lot. Much of the time I fish in tidal impacted water moving very slowly. Target fish range from 12″ cutthroat to 12# coho. Flies are sz 8 up to sz 4, often made with water absorbing materials such as wool bodies and very soft hackles.

And I prefer to fish with either a 4 or 5wt rod. Turning such flies over with comparatively light rods requires a very stiff tippet. This material does the job. Knot strength seems to be good. My blood knots seem to hold up.

I use a double turle knot to attach the fly. The turle knot, most often, seems to fail at or above listed breaking strength of the tippet.

Does what it needs to do, fluroflex all the way. Get a 4x and 5x and you’re covered for any water. Sinks much quicker than monofilament and strong as heck

I picked these up at my local fly shop since the Orvis SS were out of stock in the size I needed. I figured why not? I know Rio has great fly lines, and thought I’d give their leaders a whack. Well, huge mistake.

Not really sure why Rio would slap their brand on some low quality junk leaders like these, but they have. First of all, the line they use for these leaders are just terrible. The line is very firm, easily gets scuffed, and will NOT hold a knot.

Not only that, but the rating on the packages are very wrong. The 6 lb felt more like 2. 5. Along with that, the taper isn’t very consistent. It barely even gets smaller until the last few feet of the leader, so once you’ve snipped off 2-3 feet of a 9′ leader, you’re now working with 16 lb line! The memory is also terrible.

Overall just terrible leaders. I ended up tossing the other packs I bought, that’s how disappointed I was.

Need a strong abrasion resistant leader when fishing for Great Lakes steelhead. This is by far the best. All RIO products are first class.

I cram my creel with these as they are simple to use effective durable and hold my flies and my fish. I’ve used these for years and rely on them for my front and back country trips

I already submited a review. but I had multiple purchases. I tested several major brands of tippet to see which ones would hold the best knot strength. I tied the perfection loop, and the surgeons knot.

Orvis Supper strong plus held the highest knot strength hands down. The regular Orvis Supper Strong, did not have the knot strength necessary to be in my tackle, it had to be the PLUS.

first time using this line during trout openers this year. I was unable to land a single fish due to the line giving out and snapping, lost roughly 12 fish. I purchased my usual 6lb test for rainbow trout fishing, but your line felt alot more like 3-4lb test line.

Never buying this tippet again and am sticking to raven line products. ruined my trout fishing experience.

There’s a reason they call this “Super Strong”, because it is. I do a great deal of my fly fishing in a river that has a very stony bottom. There has occasionally been times that I have gotten my leader snagged on rocks, and more often than not while trying to un-snag, either the leader, or tippet will be cut, and I end up losing a fly.

I then read about Orvis Super Strong leaders and tippet, and decided to try them instead of the brand I previously was using. After switching to Orvis, my salvaging a snagged leader and fly has greatly increased.

I’d also like to give mention to how well the tippet will hold a knot. I highly recommend this product.

Seriously great quality. “Saving” money on less expensive tippet continually left me disappointed. Most reading this review have invested a LOT of money in fly fishing gear, and possibly travel in pursuit of fish.

Not always the price, but the value that matters most.

I’ve been fly fishing for about 40 years; seriously fly fishing for the last 14 years. I have tried all sorts of tippet material from several companies. I like Trouthunter the best! I bought 3x, 4x, and 5x spools and they lasted all year.

Realize Trouthunter comes in 55 yard long spools. This tippet holds knots really well, lays out nicely when fishing dry flies and is really strong. I rarely break off a fish anymore since switching to Trouthunter.

I had my best year of fly fishing, catching more than 1,100 trout on a fly. A good part of that success comes from switching to Trouthunter tippet.

The pound test of this product advertised on the internet differs from that printed on the product. For instance I have the following tippet sizes: 3x, 4x, 5x, and 6x. The advertised pound test (on the trout hunter website) of these lines is 8.

6lb, 7. 1lb, 4. 9lb, and 3. 7lb respectively. However the pound test printed on the spools that I received is 5. 67lb, 4. 81lb, 3. 24lb, and 2. 31lb respectively. In short, the pound test printed on the spool is about 65% of that which is advertised on the internet.

great price for high quality tippet. Winter weather, haven’t tried them, but umpqua is a well known manufacturer. I bought a second set after receiving my order.

Not quite as good as the Cortland indicator but does the job. landed a steelhead on the 2x

The strongest and thinnest tippet out there! I use 4x and 5x here in NY for steelhead, it’s the absolute best for our fishing, ties good strong knots and has no problem landing the big dogs!(12–16lbs).

Cortland Ultra Premium Fluorocarbon tippet is rated significantly stronger than other brands at the same diameter. That’s what sold me.

Small diameter for its strength. Perfect for Czech nymphing. Sinks quick and is plenty strong.

This is a sweet all around leader from streamers to dries. I only use trout hunter leader and tippet nowadays.

Borden hooked me up with a few of these leaders for my trip to Louisiana. The 10ft 20lb leader was ideal for pulling on those big bulls.

SA leaders are great – used these ones on a bass set up. Very happy with their performance turning over poppers.

This was the tippet that made the difference. I wouldn’t have caught any fish with a different brand, LOL. Really, it’s a tippet, it did what it’s supposed to do. But I did learn that these tippet rolls can be snapped together.

I learned that from a fishing guide in Montana. Helpful.

I bought this product brand new and took it on a remote fly fishing trip. This tippet caused me to lose every fish over 12 inches. I lost 2 fish that would have been my personal best because of the failures of this tippet, I know my knots were good and once I figured out my tipper was bad I borrowed a friends tippet.

After that I was not losing fish and all my flies.

I’ve been fly fishing for 20 years and have used many different brands of tippet material. I bought two Rio Powerflex spools of different size. Both were terrible. The line broke easily, twisted and tangled, and frayed constantly.

It is terrible stuff. It is not even suitable to fish with. Save yourself some money and frustration and buy a different brand.

As an avid fly fisherman who ventures for days down the river for chrome Steelhead and King Salmon, I can assure you that this is a vital piece on my vest. I have a dozen Fishpond products and plan to stick to their line.

Many years ago I recall questioning whether to spend money on fishpond (they arent exactly cheap), flash forward, now I dont even question it. You get what you pay for. As for the tippet, i love how its the PowerFlex Rio Brand and have been using them for years as well.

This came ready to use. Very nice stuff

I used blood run leader material on my downrigger rods this year, rather than straight mono. This difference took an August trip from washing lures, to landing the first salmon on a new to me boat with my father and close friend.

The leader absolutely did.

I use this leader for multiple species and does a great job at all of them. I run the 20lb leader for my walleye fishing for short leaders and leaders on lead core. I use the 30lb for leaders on copper for steelhead and salmon.

Finally, I use the 40lb for.

Great stuff! I use the 50lb as fly leaders trolled behind flashers on Lake Michigan. The 100Yd spool is convenient and should last me a full season.

I have, in the past, typically used leaders by another popular manufacturer. Recently, however, I elected to try the 2-pack Mirage 5x leaders. I applied them to two rods with different line. In both cases the leaders will simply not straighten.

I have tried several methodologies, consulted search engines and popular videos posted by gurus who all seem to claim to have the absolute fix. Nothing has worked. The plan is now to replace them and use them as cork screws.

Keep you posted. Orvis is typically a great company with terrific staff. Always helpful. I’m guessing that the leaders I recieved are anomalous and probably from a bad batch.

I have been using Orvis leaders for at least thirty years. They perform perfectly. To be fair, I also really like Dai Riki leaders. They are hard to find these days and Orvis leaders are very close. Orvis super-strong tippet material is the best there is.

I spent a lot of money trying the new ‘best of the best’ material and it is my opinion it is all marketing hype. Bottom line, these are reliable, well designed leaders. I emphasize reliable.

This is the only nylon line and tippet that I use now. Even purchased 4-6x for my two twelve year old grandsons that have started fly-fishing and fly-tying. I use nylon for dry flies, as flurocarbon sinks instead of floating.

I do however use other brands of flurocarbon on wets, nymphs, and streamers.

I fish all year around here in Pennsylvania. Some of the water gets a good bit of action , and therefore the trout can be leader shy. I have good success using Mirage fluorocarbon tippet material for my nymphs , which offers three advantages : Greater strength Less visible to the fish Faster sinking and therefore a more natural drift Love the Mirage material !.

I bought this for nymph fishing this winter in Oregon. I have used Rio Fluroflex primarily in the past and have been happy with. it, but I use Orvis Super Strong for dry fly fishing and have always been very pleased with how it ties and stretches out.

So a comparison is in progress.

I’ve been fishing Orvis tippet for the entire 2020 season as a guide in Utah and here are my findings: I will be switching over completely to Orvis over my previous brand of tippet! I found I can fish 5x mirage tippet on nymph rigs and catch as many fish and lose less fish than I used to.

With my previous brand of tippet, I needed to fish 6x to give guests and myself a chance at hooking up but used to lose bigger fish because of the low breaking strain. The same goes for the other strengths, I find the Orvis 4x works just as good as my previous brand 5x and so on! This makes a huge difference in my guiding because guests lose less fish!.

Maybe considered old fashioned ‘mono’ but this Double Strength has yet to let me down, when fluorocarbons (some expensive) have failed at the knot too many times. It’s also thinner diameter, pound for pound.

Confidence counts for a lot when fishing.

This flourocarbon is great. Easy to straighten if it gets a pig tail ot twisted. Also I like the knot strength. I’ve used other brands in a similar diameter and test strength and constantly break knots when tieing on a fly or making leader to tippet knots.

Togens Tippet material works as well for me as the more expensive brands. It performs very well at a great price. Great service from Togens as always! Thanks guys

Always been happy with Togens selection and delivery. Unfortunately between fly fishing peak season, so demand from fly tyers, and Covid issues, stocks were depleted. Looks like they’re back up with lots again.

Let me caveat by saying I’m new to fly fishing but have been trout fishing for years. This tippet seemed quite stiff and did not hold a knot (yes I know how to tie my knots). I lost two flies as soon as I hit the water.

Cut this off and tied on mono. Never had another problem. I will try this one more time the next time I am on the water but do not have high hopes. I can honestly say this is the first and only bass pro product I have been less than enthused with.

However, for the price point it’s worth a shot.

Purchased this after reading the reviews, and agree that this is a very good product. and the price makes it even better. I used it for the first Columbus Day weekend, and landed numerous salmon and brown trout.

The biggest salmon was 19 pounds on 8 lb test. The 8 lb tippet was pretty frayed after being pulled over and around rocks in the stream by the salmon, and yet held until I was able to land the fish. Also landed a couple over 14 lbs on the 6 lb test.

In addition, caught two brown trout, 11 lbs 3 oz and 11 lbs 12 oz, on the 6 lb test. Very impressed by this product, and will definitely buy more for my next trip to NY in 2 weeks.

Just got back from fishing for Lake Erie tributary steelhead. I broke off about 10 different steelhead on the 4x-6lb tippet. This should have been more than adequate for these fish as I’ve used much lighter tippet in the past, but the water was stained so I stayed with the 4x.

Sometimes I wouldn’t even get past the initial head shake. All broke at the knots. I used uni’s, polymar, and improved cinch and it didn’t matter. Maybe it was a bad batch, or it was an old batch. Probably should have stopped somewhere to buy fresh, but thought maybe it was something I was doing wrong.

Either way, i’ll not get it again. The plus side is that it was very supple and easy to work with.
