20 Best Tires For Commuting (2022 Updated)

I’ve been running the previous iteration of these tyres on two bikes for at least two years without any issues – in that time I’ve used two or three anchovies. When I replaced my worn rear with one of these new Evo TLEs I had a puncture onf the first ride (which sealed with Orange Endurance) and a 1cm gash on the second ride – total failure.

In the hand they feel thinner and more supple than the previous version, Schwalbe boast about the lighter weight but I’m unsure that’s a good thing. They may feel supple on the road (I didn’t notice TBH) but if you’re using 28s and low pressure, does this matter? I’ve replaced the split one with another Evo which I’d already bought but I have a bad feeling it will also fail or puncture frequently.

So I’m gonna buy some Continentals or Hutchinsons as back-up. Bye bye Schwalbe!.

Note: This review is based using inner tubes only! I have not given any opinion about the tyres tubeless performance. I bought these on 28/11/20 and fitted them to my Pinnacle Arkose and have since cycled circa.

945. 4 km. I live in Norfolk so cycle around the country lanes where flint is abundant. I have had about 3 – 4 punctures with these tyres since fitting. I think these tyres are probably best when used with sealant as the punctures I’ve had are tiny therefore may have been sealed if sealant were used.

(I guess that’s why tubeless tyres seem thinner because the sealant will, in theory, plug any gaps?) When I inspect the tyres after a puncture I often pull out tiny pieces of flint/sharp stone/quartz which easily pierced the thin carcass.

Apart from the puncture protection, they feel fast, smooth and supple however the tread is non-existant so I would not recommend for muddy conditions (kinda obvious). They fit onto my wheels fairly easy too! Though maybe a struggle for your wheels.

So my review is aimed at those who are planning to use inner tubes and then maybe move to tubeless later. I’ll probably switch to tubeless in the near future – just haven’t got round to it yet. Also, the tan sidewalls are very easy to clean.

Had the 38C version fitted on my bike for a bit over a month. They look great and feel great on the road. Rolls very smoothly and didn’t feel any slower compared to the 28C tyres I had previously. However, these are extremely puncture prone especially more so during the wet season.

Had 5 punctures total so far which is utterly astonishing. Never in my life had so many punctures in such a short period of time. From my trials I have learned that these tyres should not be ran on WET TARMAC and MUST BE UNDER 60 PSI.

I played around with the tyre pressure a bit and found out that small flints and road debris get just stuck in the treads at higher pressures. My current setup is with inner tubes and given how thin the casing is I would never run these tubeless.

Buy if you want delicious looks and comfy ride feel but don’t mind a ton of punctures.

As stated I love these tires, the set up, the tread pattern, the durability of the casing and overall performance are exceptional! But I just wish they lasted longer for the type of riding that i do.

Additionally it would be fantastic if there was a taller knobs offering in this tread pattern. I’m located in Northern California and the trails we ride are not traditional gravel for the most part it is technical single tack and some fire roads.

I believe the taller knobs would assist with some of our crazy steep and loose climb’s and also improve the lifespan of the tire. (currently only getting about 3-400 miles on the rear, and about double that for the front).

They are they are my go to tire and will continue to be for the forseable future. Also adding a skinwall option to the 45 size would be nice. Skinwalls for the win in my opinion for road, gravel, or mtn.

Between my wife and I, we’ve ridden four sets of the 700x40c 120 TPI EXO Ramblers. We love the traction they provide on lose gravel, while also being light weight, long wearing and fast rolling. My only complaint is that every tire has had leaky sidewalls, when run tubeless.

Eventually I’ve been able to get them to hold air well enough, by adding sealant and letting them sit on each side for a time. I’ve had to switch to a tire that holds air better for endurance rides like the 240 mile Day Across Minnesota.

Also, I’d love a Tan Wall option in a 120TPI 700X40C EXO. Do that and fix the leak and you’d have a perfect gravel tire for just about anything!.

This is a good rear option for riders in dry conditions, where it does shines. It corners well with very predibtable drifting. It took a couple rides to get used to the loose-ish feeling in aggressive corners, but it was so pleasantly consistent.

But as soon as the trail conditions got soggy all predicability was gone. The tread packs up and slides all over harder wet surfaces. It would be nice to see some 3C options. However, I acknowledge this tread is specifically designed for dry trails so I can’t knock it too much on those two point.

It’s just something to keep in mind if you regularly ride in diverse conditions. I find the Dissector to be a better fit for me.

I bought these for my commute bike. It was a slight leap if faith in terms of clearances on my Genesis Equilibrium disc, as I run mudguards all year round. They fit a treat though and they are a wonderful ride.

I was running 28mm tyres, but panniers and potholes can make for a bumpy ride on west London’s clogged and pitted arteries. Hence this purchase. The extra volume has certainly made my backside happier, but what’s great is I don’t seem to have traded much in terms of rolling resistance.

I can still make the same speeds on familiar stretches. I’m possibly a little slower off the junctions, but not frustratingly so. And as I’m only troubled with 50 meters of climbing I haven’t felt the weight penalty.

As a further plus they are doing really well with the glass that litters the gutters and road edges and is often impossible to avoid. If your bike has the clearances to take them, then get some. So far – 6 weeks in – they’re the best commuting tyres I’ve used.

Bought this to replace my back Mavic Yksion Powerlink tyre after a side wall puncture. With winter coming, preferred choice was to prioritise puncture resistance over other factors. I am extremely pleased with the purchase.

No issues with rolling resistance at all and combined with my front GP5000, I am still getting good acceleration from it,.

Fitted to Ribble CGR AL on Mavic Askium wheels with 17mm rims. Come out at just over 32mm. Run at 85psi. Absorb rough road surface vibrations without feeling squidgy and no greater drag than 25mm. Tread inspires confidence on slippery surface even though all in the mind! Have used 4 seasons thru many winters and find them more puncture proof than even gatorskins.

Great tyres, highly recommended.

Excellent tyre- a bit too pricey I bought a pair of 25 mm as soon as it was in stock here after release and have a few good months of use on them. The low weight is definitely a bonus and hopefully will become a standard for road tubeless.

It was easy to mount and easily attaches to the bead with a track pump at home. I unfortunately lost my front tyre due to a sidewall puncture caused by getting the wheel in a road drainage grill. However, the sidewall has regardless proven to be weak since on 80 psi i found it to be look mostly deformed and flat on the road ( I weigh 70 kilos).

The grip is excellent and confidence inspiring even during the rain, and even when on 40 psi whilst forgetting to pump back air, i haven’t had a single puncture, except for my foolish accident. Great tire, hope it gets a bit more affordable and more often in stock (i am aware of current times…).

I had a really good experience with the previous model (GP 5000 TL) in a 28mm on my Cannondale Topstone gravel bike, mounted on a DT Swiss CR 1600 Spline road wheelset. I’d been waiting for REI to stock the updated version, in a 32 mm, but figured I’d go ahead and try the 700 x 30mm as soon as they showed in stock.

The GP 5000 S TR mount even a bit easier than the previous mode and form a very strong / secure seal. Setting up for tubeless was quick and painless, and after a couple hundred miles on them I’m very happy.

I use the tire for my commuter ebike( 22 mile one way). The bike weights 55lb and myself over 220lb( just for having an estimate of the weight stress placed on the tire). The rear tire has lost its pattern after 2500miles along the center strip of tire.

The front one still has it at 3000 miles. Otherwise the tire has a good rolling resistance( I can do 17 miles/h without motor on flat terrain and no wind), good grip( holds well in rain) and good resistance to flats( one flat in 2500 miles).

Placing it on the rim and taking it off(especially to replace a flat tube on the road) is a major challenge- had to change to steel levers after I broke the plastic ones and bent the aluminum ones.

I’ve ridden both the 35c and 40c versions. Great grip, excellent rolling resistance on pavement, secure cornering. The casing is supple and offers a great ride. I’ve ridden these on a torture test course in Western Rhode Island.

They excel on pavement, packed dirt, grass, fine gravel, chunky gravel and rocky rough stuff. Not best tire for deep mud. I’ve used them in CX races too.

Of all the round tyres out there – these by far are the greatest. With superior traction you get good control on the rough stuff – but without loss of speed on the road. The went up tubeless no problems; and the 45 size is just super.

I wish these tyres onto all cyclists so they can see the glory of such good tyres.

A nice improvement in comfort and speed. I’m pleasantly surprised going to a larger sized tire would show a noticeable impact in comfort and speed. These are excellent tires for the mostly dry and not extreme gravel paths that I ride.

Rolls very well. Big upgrade from standard tyres on my Giant Revolt. Very easy tubeless setup as well.

I have these tyres on three different bikes of varying widths. I have experimented with many brands and keep coming back to the Schwalbe Marathon. Puncture protection and longevity is key for me and they have never let me down on those fronts.

There is also minimal compromise on grip and rolling resistance.

Installed on my Trek Gary Fisher cycle and have about 100 miles on these tires. Balance is good, they are holding up great, installation isnt bad if youre experienced with wire bead tires and Ive had no punctures yet.

Theres a couple of install tips – I used reusable zip ties to hold the tire in place when I got a section of the bead seated (see photo). I also used a bead lubricant – water based golf grip solution.

Soap and water would work as well. Id buy these tires again.

I’ve been riding for the better part of 15 years, doing rides for good causes and just riding for overall health. I’d say I ride maybe 150 miles a week, my bike of choice in that time has been the Specialized Roubaix and the tire of choice till now has been the S-Works Turbo.

I switched to the Continental GP5000 over a month ago and I have to say they are FANTASTIC!!!! I ride on all surfaces from maintained trails to country roads in the Northern part of the Twin Cities.

I typically would get one to two flats a month on the Turbo’s, but since I switched “knock on wood” I haven’t had a flat yet. Very fast tire, sticky in the turns and a much smother ride at the same PSI which I always ride at 100 front and back.

Do yourself a favor, get a pair and you will not be disappointed!.

As far as the ride quality goes, these are sublime. I am running a pair of 25c tires, usually with pressures between 70-85 psi, and they roll fast and grip well in the corners. Above 30 km/h it is a breeze to maintain speeds! The tires even measure at close to 25 mm, so you won’t have to worry about clearance.

They feel more comfortable, but it is possible that’s a placebo effect. I haven’t had a puncture yet, but I’m just coming up to the 500 km point with the pair, so I can’t speak too much to that. However, I need to talk about the reason why this absolutely amazing tire only gets four stars: these are an absolute pain to mount! For reference, there is a known challenge when mounting these on smaller rim widths.

I was attempting to mount these on a pair of Cosmic Elite UST wheels, and I took about 90 minutes of trying before giving up and handing these to a mechanic to mount. The mechanic agreed, and they noted that this was the hardest tire/rim combo they have ever mounted.

You may not have this issue! The GP 5000 TL has thicker beads in order to ensure a better seal. The theory is that for tires with shallower rim widths (I was working with a 17 mm rim width), the larger bead of the tire is not able to sit in the valley of the rim, making it harder to mount.

An additional note is that this tire will not work on a hookless rim. This is becoming more common, so be aware when purchasing. I still recommend these tires! If you have a wider rim than I did, you may never run into the issues I had.

Last tyre had a puncture and was near end of life so decided to go for a new one. I have had good service from Schwalbe tyres and the price was excellent. I prefer traditional tyres rather than fold flat as I find them easier to fit.

Will have to see how well it resists punctures. Went for the 23mm as that was the original fitment and gives better clearance under mudguards. People say they are harder work and give a rougher ride, can’t actually tell any difference.

No problems with wet or dry grip so far. I always shop around but consistently find Halfords to be competitive with online stores and eBay.

Recently replaced my racing bike thin tyres used Schwalbe Lugano. Unlike many slicks these have light tread pattern giving side and corner grip. Surprisingly these were much cheaper than Amazon! Despite the reputable name, like many nowadays actually made in Far East.

But quality & grip!.

While it rolls better than the regular addix the installation was a pain. They call it easytubeless but this has by far been the most difficult tyre to seat in the bead. Despite brand new take it keeps losing air pressure every 2 days.

Might have been better if running this with a light-weight tube. Other than that looks cool.

5 stars! This tire is very supple – up to ~1cm roots, rocks and sharp edges essentially disappear. You have to adjust your expectations because the suppleness is like having very low pressure, but actually I use ~1.

8bar. It’s a godsend for a hardtail. The rolling resistance is very low. On road or dirt I use 1 gear higher, so I estimate 5-10% faster than the normal casing. This also applies to climbing. It feels very fast.

The braking traction is good. On the street, the tire can skid slightly before expected; on the trail there are no surpises. Durability seems really good. I use the 2. 35″ version.

When comparing side wall colour with same brand tyre (RacingRay) purchased from another retailer, there is a noticeable difference in appearance. Expected better quality and consistentcy from this brand.

Dissapointed.

This is the third set of these Goodyears I have had on my truck (2013 RAM 1500 Reg Cab Tradesman- 265/70R17) and every time I come back to Walmart for this tire because for my needs, it simply cannot be beat.

I had 74K on the first set with regular rotation and could have easily drove them past 80K but I prefer good inclement weather performance which had degraded significantly by 74,000 miles. The last set was on for only 45K miles with again at least another 30K left on them save for one tire that was unevenly worn- I did not rotate and balance this set like I did the previous set (thanks to shutdowns in the name of covid for nearly 2 years).

So, that’s an average of 61K miles per set and with regular rotation and balancing, you can add another 30% to that easily; its an 80K tire on my truck. The OEM Highway tires on my truck didn’t even last 40K and I was forever slipping and sliding around even in the lightest of rain.

These Goodyears provide excellent wet weather traction even in torrential downpours and flash flooding which we get in this area frequently (Middle Tennessee). Light to moderate snow traction is also excellent in my experience and this is from someone who spent 20 years driving in northern Illinois/ southern Wisconsin.

The off-road traction is also very good and makes my rear-wheel-drive truck seem like it is 4×4 at times, passengers have thought it was on multiple occasions. For comparison, I was nervous to drive or park on flat grass with my original tires because if it was at all wet, I may be getting stuck in someone’s yard.

I had this happen more than once, talk about embarrassing. As soon as I put these Goodyears on, it was like I had a different vehicle. I could now drive all over my wooded property and straight up severely steep, grass covered hills without a problem.

I still routinely drive off road and in the 6-7 years I’ve been using these tires, I’ve only ever gotten stuck once and it was in deep snow-covered mud going up a steep embankment with no room to maneuver that would have had 99% of 4x4s stuck too.

For years I had a 2 hour commute at speeds between 65-85mph and these tires are very quiet on road, quieter than many very expensive tires I have had on cars. Combined with the naturally smooth ride of the RAM 1500 these tires help to provide a superb ride quality that my dad insists is much nicer than his Cadillacs and Lincolns, which is saying something, and honestly, I have to agree with him.

These tires are very sure-footed, composed and give you the confidence to take curves at many times the “recommended” speed and reward you with even more confidence for the next time. There is no “squishy” or “squirmy” feel to these tires as is sometimes apparent in a tall tire even under hard acceleration.

BOTTOMLINE: These are possibly the best truck tire for the money made!.

These are great tires at a fair price for what they are. They are good all season standard load light truck and SUV highway tires, 6 ply. Great for normal light duty city and highway all season use when not hauling heavy loads or pulling heavy trailers.

Good highway performance in all weather conditions including snow and rain. They are essentially the same tires that came stock mounted from the factory when I first purchased my Chevy Avalanche a few years back.

They performed well on highway use for the life of the tires, around 60k miles, before needing replacement. What they are not is true all terrain LT tires suited to any serious off road driving. Occasional off road use on smooth dirt or sandy roads they’ll do OK, but you’re not going to want to try and use them for any serious rugged off road use involving rocky, extreme deep mud, or back country driving,.

their ply and load rating make them too light for such use. For my current situation living, working and playing in a remote and rugged mountainous region of New Mexico, 70% of my driving is off road in all kinds of hard core road and all season weather conditions from heavy snows to torrential monsoon rains and deep mud.

Thusly, I require heavier duty tires in the E class 10 ply range for reliability in such conditions. Based upon the product images for this tire (which are the incorrect tire shown BTW), customer comments and reviews, and speaking directly with the auto center manager at my nearest Walmart Super Center before ordering these tires, that’s what I thought I was buying.

Only upon delivery did I discover that the tires are not 10 ply but rather only standard load 6 ply tires. Unfortunately in my present circumstances – with two blown tires and another with a major sidewall belt separation (a different tire set than these)- returning or exchanging them now is not an option as I had to mount them to get me back on the road and to work ASAP.

I will use them and expect them to perform well enough for a time. However, given the demands of my daily off road driving conditions as previously stated, I don’t expect they’ll last more than a third to maybe half (if lucky) of their warranted tread life, if that.

I’ve been driving for over 45 years in all imaginable highway and serious off road and all weather conditions – primarily driving 4×4 trucks and other SUV’s – and have used many types and brands of tires.

So I know my stuff when it comes to tires and their quality and capabilities. I repeatedly come back to using Goodyear tires because I know for the price they are good quality tire brand and consistently reliable.

You can almost never go wrong choosing Goodyear in that regard. For what they are, as mentioned, within their class and ratings for everyday highway use, these are very good tires at a decent price. Just be aware that in spite of the photos and what others incorrectly state here, these are not E class 10 ply LT tires, they are 6 ply.

For highway use a good buy.

Only ridden a few times so far, however, tires feel light and fast. The ‘R2’ version has little nubs on each shoulder of the tire which seem to grip the road grip in a turn. Price was nice and REI bike shop did a great job with the install (and a ‘spring’ tune-up of my whole bike).

While I had no problem with grip, these tires have gotten so many punctures. They came on my Trek Émonda SL6, which I love, and I read reviews saying that they were horrible about punctures and not durable.

I decided to give them a fair shake to see for myself, but I have been getting flat after flat after flat. They have little holes everywhere and a few bigger ones that required the dollar-bill-in-the-tire trick.

Never had these problems with the Continentals I’ve always used, so I’m going back. And upgrading to tubeless after all this mess, thank goodness the rims came tubeless ready!.

So far I’ve put roughly 500 miles of mixed terrain of light gravel to downtown Atlanta roads to bike paths and country roads. I’ve only encountered one flat but that was a pinch flat from the inner tube, simple fix and a common occurrence.

There’s a few cuts here and there no more than a cm in length which poses no problems but I highly recommend these tires – great all rounder for the price vs others.

Having ridden pretty much exclusively on Vittoria tyres for the last 6 years, I’ve not been at all disappointed with the latest version the G2. As a relatively high mileage rider targeting 12,000KM each year, I particularly enjoy the comfort these help achieve.

Also I completely trust the level of grip in both wet and dry conditions. I did have a brief experiment with the Continental GP 4000 series, but for me they didn’t give anything like the same level of comfort.

Although the majority of roads I ride here in the South of France are very good, I inevitably do venture onto very poor surfaces at times. As with the Vittoria Open Corsa of old, then the G+, I have very few issues with tyre damage or punctures.

I’ve only ridden the recent G2 for around 2,000 KM, but have had no punctures nor do I expect the durability to differ from previous versions.

I tend to use the Schwalbe Marathons as the yardstick to compare other tyres to. These Panaracers are lighter, softer rubber and therefore grippier, and WAY easier to get on and off the rim whenever you get a puncture.

And that isn’t often – I managed to courier these front and back for a whole Spring/Summer/Autumn season without a single flat tyre. That said, a screw that some kind stranger left in the bike lane went straight through the back one after 10 months’ without a flat.

It made such a large hole that the tyre was an immediate write-off. I still have the Panaracer on the front wheel though (with a Marathon on the back). It’s a good set-up with the softer compound providing front-end grip while the Marathon on the back offers more puncture resistance where 75% of my ever-growing weight is.

I ride this combo through to the first snowfall that settles, then switch to my winter set-up.

I’ve only had a few rides but I really like the soft ride, much softer than I’m used to with Continentals, but no complaints with the Continentals. I had a little bit of trouble mounting these on Mavic MA40 rims but was totally worth the effort.

I’ll buy these again for another classic steel frame bike.

40 Years of riding bikes and pleased I found this make of tyre 5 years ago. Most important is the flexible side wall rather than a cheap tyre with black rubber all the way around the tyre. Not a heavy weight touring tyre but great for leisure and club riding.

I have these tyres on three bikes – carbon, audax and light weight touring bike with mudguards sizes 25mm, 28mm and 32mm. Please do not stop producing them or I am in trouble.

Our Roll Elite came with this tire, and despite the BlackBelt, it went flat 10 minutes into the first ride. A tiny thorn punctured the tire and tube. The thorn punctured into one of the narrow grooves between the.

Ig tread blocks. Maybe Blackbelt is only under the thick tread blocks. I’d like to convert to tubeless. Is this tire tubeless compatible?.

I absolutely love these tires. They grip so well in corners and do well on technical single tracks here in BC, Canada. I was looking for high volume tires for my 4 days gravel stage race and they definitely are a perfect choice, measuring 42mm for 700×40.

I have been riding everything from smooth gravel, super rough gravel to single track and Alluvium has proven to be excellent.

I got a pair of 700×40 tires, mounted them on 22 mm internal width rims and at 40 psi the casing measures 43 mm wide. That was a bit too wide for my frame to clear. So I got a 700×35 tire and mounted it on the same rim and at 40 psi the casing measures to 33 mm wide, too small!.
