20 Best Tires For Ice (2022 Updated)

I loved these tires so much that I bought them again. I live in the country and have to drive up a steep driveway. I could not make it up or down with any snow or ice on the driveway. I had to park at the bottom and walk up the steep hill, in the cold and lugging supplies for our home.

The. Symptoms tires made all the difference on that hill. I also was able to drive on the roads without slipping all around. I love them so much that I kept them on in the summer. They really helped when I drove on all the back and dirt roads I need to drive on.

They even saved me from getting stuck a few times. With my other tires I would have been stuck, but now with sumitomo, I get to where I’m going safely. Thank you.

Put a set of 4 on my AWD 2011 Durango Citadel, and my wife and I loved them. Excellent traction even on the wet slushy and mealy snow we get in NY. They also performed fairly well on icy roads without the optional studs you can get with them.

Only complaint i have with them is the road noise, but honestly with an aggressive snow tire like this your bound to have some road noise. This is also our 3rd year i have installed them and there still better then half the life of the tire left after putting nearly 20k miles on them.

I work as a mechanic so i have seen MANY different types of snow/summer tires go out of our shop. Many of our customers run the Blizzaks but i have talked to a few customers who switched to these Sumitomo Ice Edges for the main reason of “They were nearly half the price of the Blizzaks”.

Each one of them said they would glady buy another set because of how well they performed especially at the price point. I will also buy another set when the time comes. very satisfied with this tire.

I drive 400 miles per day / 5 days a week in Central/SE Wisconsin at 60-80 mph almost completely on rural highways and freeways in a 2012 Chrysler Town & Country minivan. I’m mostly out before the plows, and end up driving on some pretty crappy roads.

While these tires perform admiralty in heavy snow, lower Wisconsin doesn’t have a lot of that. What we do get is a lot of black ice! I bought these because of the deep tread and ice rating hoping they would live more than a few months (which the did), but linear stability is very poor as they do not have any deep, straight grooves or tread bars and no defined shoulder blocks.

I ran a Nokian WRG3’s before theses,and they are a much superior tire in all aspects of winter driving in Wisconsin and I got 2 seasons (65k total) out of them to boot. I run dedicated summer tires. I run winter tires November – late March.

UPDATE: 04. 12. 2020 After moving these tires to a 2016 Subaru Outback (same size tires as Town & Country), they perform admirably on the Outback! After 2 seasons on 2 vehicles, I still have 65% tread left! I just bought another set for my 2011 VW Golf Sportwagen.

In October 2020 we would soon need new snow tires for both of our vehicles so I started looking around at what was available. I previously had General Altimax Artic winter tires on my vehicle and even after 5 years they were still great in winter conditions but I figured it was time to replace them.

On our other vehicle we previously had Continental WinterContact SI Plus tires. My wife does more driving than me so I was not surprised these tires were wearing a bit faster but had provided excellent traction for three winter seasons.

According to Canadian Tire the Michelin X-Ice® SNOW was the top rated winter tire, just ahead of the Continental WinterContact SI Plus. (For some reason the General Altimax Artic tire had no CT rating despite having excellent customer reviews).

We purchased two sets of the Michelin tires and assumed they would be great in winter conditions. When winter weather finally hit we were shocked to find both of our AWD vehicles were sliding (fish-tailing) at the slightest sign of snow, slush, or ice on the roads.

Neither of us drive aggressively and had experienced no sliding of this type in similar conditions on our previous winter tires. These Michelin X-Ice® SNOW tires are the worst performing winter tires I have ever owned, especially considering their premium price.

Michelin touts the tires long tread life in their ads, saying that you can get an extra winter out of them compared to other brands. I have no doubt that this is the case but I’d rather have three seasons of excellent winter traction than four seasons of poor traction.

I wish we had went with the Generals or Continentals again. I don’t know how CT rated these Michelins as the top winter tire, They must have tested them on bare, dry roads.

With increasing gas prices, I decided to keep my car three more years so I took advantage of an end-of-winter sale and replaced my older Michelin x-ice tires with a new set. My car is hybrid-electric, so when it’s running strictly on battery, it’s very quiet.

After a month of driving, I cannot believe how much more quiet this tire is compared to the previous generation. I got a good price, a highly rated Michelin tire, and I’m set for the next three or four seasons.

The sales team was a bit of a fast-talking crew, promised a few things they did not deliver, like a Michelin rebate directly from the manufacturer, but overall, I am pleased and would recommend this tire without hesitation.

Replaced these tires on BMW 431 ( had Pirelli snow tires on ); There is roll at corninrind , feel slike going to loose traction; On snow and ice; 10% better than summer tires. Only good thing about them is less tires noise.

These tires are the best we’ve ever had. They plow our little car through deep snow with no problems and they stick to ice better than we ever expected them to. The last set of winter tires we had couldn’t hold a candle to these tires.

The noise is much quieter than any others we’ve had and the way they handle on corners is much better than we would have expected from a winter tire. A big thumbs up to Michelin for these tires!.

Great winter tires. I realized that I was basically stuck in my driveway trying to use all seasons on an incline to exit the driveway. These tires are FANTASTIC. The traction on them is amazing and for country and highway driving, I’d definitely recommend.

No need to build up speed just to get on the road anymore.

I was leery at first. I have always heard you get what you pay for but I rolled the dice on these and I couldnt be more impressed with these tires. I literally have never seen a tire that has the straight stopping power that these do in snow and even on glare ice! These tires have not disappointed me in any aspect.

I would recommend them to everyone looking for a great but affordable winter tire!.

Compared to the stock all-season tires, these tires are a significant improvement. I’ve driven these since October 2021, and these tires have given me the confidence and stability that I simply did not have with the stock Continental tires that Tesla puts on by default.

I cannot vouch how well these compare to other snow tires, however, for the price (almost half as much as the other brands), I am 100% satisfied with my purchase.

Ordered these based on the picture posted. couldn’t find much information about the tire itself online. Not sure if that’s because its unpopular or new. Bought for my 2020 Toyota Camry awd. My factory tires even with awd aren’t the best in winter.

Haven’t put the nexen tires on yet but promising. These nexen tires look really good. Only disappointment so far is I couldn’t ship these to the nearest store.

these tires were very cheap but I bought them for winter driving. it’s almost false advertising as these tires DO have a winter tread pattern, but are made of HARD rubber and weigh much LESS than my previous winter tires that cost more.

I guess the only positive side is I can run them year long because of the harder rubber so they won’t lose tread as easily on summer pavement and because they were so cheap who cares right.

So far, great tires. Much better wet traction than the more expensive Hankooks I had on my car, previously. Better overall handling than the Hankooks, also. No Complaints at all.

On a Cadillac SRX4 these have been the worst winter tires I’ve ran in 17 years driving. I drive around 30k km per winter in the worst conditions imaginable as an oilfield worker, so I know a good set of tires.

Bought these for my wife’s vehicle based on positive reviews. The other reviewers are obviously driving in mild conditions at best. These tires are junk. Got a flat from gravel on a highway in the first week, rock penetrated the tire.

They don’t evacuate slush at all, the tread blocks are too tight to evacuate snow or grip in loose snow/slush, and they are terrible on ice, both starting and stopping. They are so bad that after only one winter we are running them all summer to wear them out so we can buy a better tire for this coming winter.

My wife drove my truck with Toyo Open Country CT’s on it all winter instead because she hated these tires on her CUV so much. Save yourself the money and buy anything but Goodyear or Michelin winter tires.

Absolutely garbage tires.

North Dakota winter. Not cold yet with no sub zero temperatures but a lot of mist and foggy days icing the roads along with some sleet. No more than 3 inches of snow so far but some drifting on our gravel and farm to market roads.

On the icy roads with sleet these tires are working well. Not quite as well as the studded snows on my two pickups but much better than the snow tires we had on the Chrysler van last winter. They are still new and our gravel roads will wear on them over the next few months.

Then we’ll see how they hold up. For now they are doing a good job. The bit of snow I have been going through, drifts to a foot, nothing deep – they are working fine. Without them I would not have tried the drifts.

No shortcomings so far. Hydropaning resistance? Can’t say as we are not warm enough for rain. Ice traction was on the sleet as well as on a couple frozen lakes(22 inches of ice) with patchy snow covered areas.

Could stop and start easily on the ice in temps that were warm, right near and just above freezing. As it gets cold – minus 20-40 I think it will only get better. Would never go a winter without winter specific tires here in North Dakota.

Studded on my pickups – big 89 GMC 4×4 and small VW diesel pickup(front wheel drive) and non-studded on my wifes Chrysler Town & Country van. They make a world of difference. The GMC is a farm truch and sees winter fields a lot and the studded tires make going across them and ice fishing lakes much easier.

On these Ice tires without studs? Yes, I would buy them again for the van. Our driving is at least 70% pavement on the van. More gravel roads with the pickups. “city and highway” is not accurate here with “City” being 100-2500 and 9 – 22 miles away.

Going to and from is often farm to market roads with no pavement for that distance. So, country gravel roads mixed with highway is more accurate.

This is the first set of winter snow/ice tires that I have bought in my 30+ yeas driving in upstate NY that I am really pleased with. I have had many different auto’s and many different tires and brands over the years and these out preform them all.

Having 4 young children in the daily driver I needed a good set of tires , These fit the bill and being that they are GoodYear that is a bonus. Easy starts on snow and ice. Handles wet and dry roads nicely.

I felt very secure driving on these. And the price for the quality cannot be beat. The ride is smooth and quiet as well as very comfortable. If you live where you get snow GET a set of these tires you won’t be disappointed.

These are the 3rd set of Falken snow tires I have used on cars in my household. They are a great value tire which perform as well as much more expensive ones from other brands, such as BFG Blizzaks that I have used before.

Most any others at this price are just not worth a Falken.

Havent hit the snow season here in Northern IN but the tires are great thus far. Beefy treads, nice ride thus far. 2018 Subaru Outback.

They look good, ride good and mounted up well. Grip the road good and not too loud. Great option for Toyota RAV4

Tires, so far, have been great in the snow and ice. I was a bit surprised that they came with only 9. 5/32 tread new, especially after adding the “snow” to the tire name. I’m hoping that the tread is durable enough to get me through at least four seasons with that.

Today, I noticed that they are definitely prone to hydroplaning in moderate to heavy rain, so be careful. I would assume that possibly a slightly deeper tread might reduce that issue. If it wasn’t for that aspect, it would have definitely been a five star rating.

Long time Michelin X-ICE winter tire owner and we bought a new set for our Honda Ridgeline and these are great tires. Recently had accumulations of snow on our roads and these tires handled it like a champ.

Going from a dead stop to safe speeds is pretty much instant with little to no wheel spin. Braking is also great and as long as you RESPECT the weather and road conditions, you shouldn’t have any issues navigating through snow build up, corners or slippery bridge and on/off ramps.

Great tires and would highly recommend these if you’re looking for a winter tire.

I’ve had many different winter tires over the years, several of them were very good, but each had at least 1 flaw. I’ve had the Michelin X ice snows for a month now, and they have been excellent. Fuel economy is exceptional for any tire, let alone a winter tire (My Nokians were great too) They will literally pay for themselves vs my previous ones.

Very smooth and quiet, which is important to me since we usually don’t get much snow and therefore drive on dry pave more often than not. Braking is excellent too as advertised. I haven’t seen ice yet or deep slush, that’s tough for any winter tire but these should be decent in those conditions as well.

If they last as long as Michelin says, I’ll definitely be buying them again. My favorite winter tire so far I’ve used.

I just had these tires mounted on steel rims for the winter. I’ve had the same tire on a previous vehicle and was very happy with the performance. They also have very low road noise for a winter tire.

We haven’t had any snow yet so I can’t give a honest review on performance on snow or ice however with my previous set they worked well. My vehicle is a Mazda MX 5.

I have these on my 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV AWD and they are great. The vehicle was new a few years ago and the original tires were all seasons and they were terrible. I can really stop well, which is where the originals failed.

My tires are 19 inch and they are rather pricey and so are the steel wheels they are mounted upon, its an odd size.

Rolling resistance is a big deal on an electric car and these are only a little worse than the OEM on my Hyundai Kona. And they are probably the best winter tires for traction I have ever owned. The noise is not noticeable either.

But be warned, driving at highway speeds on snow covered roads in sub-zero temperatures with the heater on, your range will plummet by 30%.

They are designed to function well in snow as well as perform well on bare roads. It is a balance that the Perelli tire has nailed. I have had snow tires that function well in snow, but the road noise on bare road is too loud for normal cab conversation.

These have good traction, even in deep snow, quiet on the highway with out all that sway that typically comes with the softer tread of a typical snow tire. This is my future tire of choice and the purchase process with TireBuyer.

I really like these tires, but I would not buy them again, simply because Pirelli is phasing them out. Some sizes are already unavailable. So if one of the tires on my vehicle gets damages, what would I do? I would have to buy a whole set of new tires.

Not a good deal.
