Jonas is the one to realize all of this and change it before it’s too late. His experiences as the new Giver have opened his eyes to the inhumanity of this “civilized” group of people, and he is out to change his world for better by re-introducing concepts like love and uniqueness.

I recommended this book to my friend and we both agree that it is an amazing read. If you’re wondering if your child should read this book, I say if they are 12 or older it is a must-have and a great topic of discussion.

Verity is the first book I’ve ever read by Colleen Hoover, and definitely won’t be the last. She draws you in with her writing to where you forget you’re reading–you’re just that invested in the story.

I’ve been meaning to read her books for a long time and think this thriller was a fun and wild one to start out with! Verity’s husband, Jeremy, hires a writer, Lowen, to finish writing a popular series by his wife, who was in an accident and can’t complete the series.

Jeremy also invites Lowen to stay at the house with him and Verity and gives her complete access to Verity’s office for research on the series. Almost immediately Lowen comes across an unfinished autobiography Verity was writing.

What Lowen reads in that manuscript is so disturbing, she immediately begins wondering if she should show it to Jeremy. Knowing that Lowen has begun falling for Jeremy, I wasn’t one hundred percent sure that she had the purest of intentions; however, the confessions were pretty shocking, and I found myself leaning towards telling Jeremy.

As if this all wasn’t creepy enough, the scare factor was increased by events unfolding in a way that I couldn’t tell if what Lowen was seeing and experiencing were real or not. I’ve said this many times and will keep saying it–I love not being sure about whether a narrator is reliable or not! The only reason I rated this book four stars instead of five was that I didn’t like Lowen falling for Jeremy.

I thought it was predictable and a bit sudden. Bottom line–this book was a roller coaster, the kind that goes zero to sixty in five seconds. From the first page, you are LAUNCHED into the story. I flew through the book and was brought out of a major reading slump I previously was struggling to get out of.

Things that happen in Verity are played with to where you can’t tell if you’re imagining things or not, and I love an author’s ability to do that.

I have read nearly all that Anne Tyler has written. Sometimes, I wonder on how many walls she has strategically placed flies, so rich are her observations of us humans, as we fumble, bumble and stumble our way through our ordinary lives.

With great empathy and humour, she sees how we can make such a mess of our relationships with our partners and our families, how the decisions of one generation can shape lives along future branches of the family tree.

Through her characters, she gives us the opportunity to look in the mirror.

Even though this is my first novel of Anne Tyler, I started enjoying read Anne Tylers novel because I had learnt a lot about marriage during reading this novel. This is a novel which talked about a long relationship of a family which had stand for thirty years.

When Michael and Pauline first meet each other, then they were falling in love. Because they loved, so they married. They have many disagrees with each other during their marriage, so they fought a lot.

They have three children who were growing up in a fighting family. They were often to see their parents fights. They were keeping fight, fight and fight and make each other miserable very often. That is very hard for readers, such as me, to see their love any more in their marriage.

This family has been changed suddenly when their oldest children left their family. This novel mentioned the true fact of marriage. When I was reading this novel, I had thinking about it is not a very easy thing to control a family.

Also it is kind of sad to read when their oldest daughter left their family, because I think it is a high point of this novel and their family is not going well any more. Even though they were fight a lot, they did not really realize what is going on with their family and they did not honestly see their marriage.

When their oldest daughter left home, then they suddenly found out their family was not going better any more. I had learnt something about family and marriage from their Michael and Paulines marriage.

I bought The Amateur Marriage because Im on a quest to read every book written by Anne Tyler. Having already finished five of her previous novels, I knew to expect this book to be an in-depth study of a unique set of characters that happen to live in Baltimore, Maryland.

But somehow I didnt expect, not even three-quarters of the way through this book, that I would pronounce this one my favorite. In my reading of the early chapters of this story, I have to admit that I did feel a little disappointment.

In some spots, Ms. Tylers storytelling seemed leaner than some of her previous books I had read. Some descriptions were mere skeletons with bare skin and bones, while I had come to expect a meatier fare from this author.

But even with the lack of details in some places, the story of the lives of these Baltimoreans still builds piece-by-piece, chapter-by-chapter and decade-by-decade from the 1940s and into the next century.

Like all her other stories, it came to consume my thoughts even as I went about my business of my own life. As a matter of fact, parts of this book were a little too close for comfort when compared to events of my own life and the lives of people I know.

I relived those events while reading about the all-too-real characters in this book. It may be difficult for people to read if they have experienced an unexpected and painful loss whether by death, divorce, a runaway child, or a parent with Alzheimers.

This book touches on the suffering incurred through all of these. Suffering and pain might well be the most suitable words to describe the overall theme of this book. But its impossible not to come to care for the characters as you read of their suffering and to identify with the pain they feel.

I was touched with sadness to the point of tears as I finished the last page. Perhaps that is why I consider this my favorite of her books not because its a happy or fun story, but because I came to care for the characters nearly as much as if they were my own friends and family.

This book will be used at my daughter’s graduation party. Each guest will sign their name with a message somewhere on the pages of this classic Dr. Seuss book. Not will it be a nice keepsake, but there is a bookcase/hard jacket that makes this even more special.

My son is finishing his first year of kindergarten so I thought got this for his teachers to sign and as a future graduation present to him. the quality is incredible! and I love that it doesn’t have a tacky price or bar code on it at all like the others.

One of the most entertaining books I have read in a long time. Stanley was convicted of stealing a pair of used, smelly but valuable celebrity sneakers. He claimed they fell from the sky, but he was not believed and sent by the Court to “camp.

” The “camp” is for wayward boys and this is story is about Stanley’s time at the camp. Stanley was from a poor family and his mother was pleased that finally her boy was going to get to go to “camp.

” What in the world is more entertaining than teen-aged boys. particularly wayward ones in “captivity?” You have to read the book to learn about the Holes. I loved the book. It was an easy and way too fast read.

One of my favorite debates in my sixth grade English class is why Holes is a fantasy book, and not realistic fiction. The characters are so real to kids and the situation believable in so many ways that kids forget that nothing in life is quite this coincidental! In a full-circle style, Louis Sachar’s masterpiece chronicles the life of Stanley Yelnats, who is one of the unlucky members of the Yelnats family.

Bad luck seems to have followed the Yelnats family for generations, and it all goes back to Stanley’s “no good, dirty rotten pig-stealing great, great grandfather”. Stanley is accused of a crime he didn’t commit, and is sent to Camp Green Lake for juvenile delinquents.

There, all the incarcerated boys must dig a hole each day to “build character”. The grueling work is only made worse by the cruel and uncaring staff. By resolving the family curse, saving the day for a group of juvenile delinquents, and proving that authority figures (i.

e. adults) aren’t always right, Stanley moves from “loser” to hero status. The main plot is intertwined with a flashback parallel plot, both of which come together at the end of the book. I can’t help but compare it to a Seinfeld episode, where everything seems to come together and all coincidences are linked.

The story is easy to read, and kids have loved it ever since the day it was published. I hate to see good books like this one made into movies, especially since it was a great book for kids who aren’t great readers.

Many of them just opt to see the film instead. However, the film is extremely well done, and it’s a great reward for a kid who reads and finishes the book. Sachar proves he’s a master storyteller in this one, which is light years more complex than his Wayside School series.

Great for advanced fourth grade readers–all the way to seventh.

I needed this book for my son class in school. Was a great price and very convenient to pick up within two hours.

I loved the original game with the cards with multiple choice questions, great for use in my retirement community as a discussion generator! Unfortunately, someone had taken my cards some years back; I moved to a new position and decided to order a new set, and the new game is NOTHING like the original.

I wrote to the company to ask how I could get the old cards, and have yet to hear any response. New game is useless for my needs, and as it is opened, I can’t return.

This is a pretty fun game. The basics are that you’re given five situations that you have to rank from order of “this isn’t that bad” to “this is the worst thing that could ever happen”. Other people have to guess how you rank them.

Good to play with people that you know somewhat well.

We have 4 children (ages 3-10) and we really enjoyed playing this game together. Excluding my youngest who is not quite old enough to get the dynamics of the game nor read the cards, my older 3 had a blast looking at all the “worst case scenarios” and trying to figure out how each of us ranked the choices.

I definitely have seen my children in a new light because of this game – they clearly have very different ideas about what is a bad situation, lol.

Immensely readable, but beware, the contents of this book are not for the faint-hearted amongst us ! It is extraordinarily written, offering up not just the human psyche and the degradation that went along with it, but an insight into how much a human being can be pushed when the odds are stacked well and truly against him/her.

Look beyond the obvious, though, and you will be enlightened with a truly remarkable story of human endurance, courage, will and the fight to live. I very much appreciated the author’s concise explanations throughout the book.

It is a hard book to recommend but if you do decide to tackle it you will be rewarded with something very worthwhile, written with great empathy and sympathy.

I first read Daniel James Brown’s Boys In The Boat for a book club. It wasn’t a book I would have choose on my own. I loved it, so I decided to read The Indifferent Stars Above, also by him. I enjoyed this book so much that next on my list is his 3rd book.

I knew the Donner Party was a group of wagon travelers that got stuck in the snow and resorted to cannibalism, but not any details. The author centered this book on one character in particular, so we did get more background on her and her family, but I think he was detailed with all people involved.

The research into the politics and society at the time was interesting and pertinent to the story, but not overwhelming. I have young children, so I would have liked more details on the struggle to keep children alive, but I think that could have been very upsetting.

The focus character was not a mom, so this wasn’t the center of the novel. This book reads much more like a fiction tale than a stuffy non-fiction tale, and I did have problems putting it down. Not knowing enough details, I really did want to see who lived and died.

After reading, I did go back and reread almost half the novel again, in parts, so I think if you know the outcome, you’d still enjoy.

This book is awe-inspiring in its subject matter and writing style. The author seemlessly blends historical fact and narrative into a very readable novel. The focus of this book is not singularly on the gruesome details of the Donner Party, but examines the context around which the events transpired.

Perfect for anyone with a fondness for the Oregon Trail game and Serial podcast.

I was reluctant to indulge in what I’d anticipated would be a soap opera of a novel. Another book version of the shows on Oprah’s tv network. I didn’t think it would be bad, just too dramatic for my liking.

But boyyyyy. Was. I. WRONG. I will never forget this book. The depths of emotions it provoked. The questions it made me ask. The quotes that gripped me. The language of prose that melted my heart. I found this novel not to be a story, but an exploration of ideas, feelings, growth and the nature of conflict itself.

Throughout each changing narrative perspective, challenged were my beliefs about happiness, duty, entitlement, familial heirarchy, honesty and integrity, honesty *VS* integrity, self-worth and the very foundation of the institution of marriage in the 21st century.

All characters were flawed in the rawest of human ways. For this reason, what one reader may laud or adore, another may despise or admonish in each character. But no matter what, it felt virtually impossible to feel neutral about a single individual in this story.

Jones uses letters to cover the passage of time of Roy’s incarceration, a method of storytelling I’d never witnessed before and wholeheartedly applaud. I also praise her crafting of dialogue and narrative voice that echoed in the mind with such sincerity.

Never once did I have trouble suspending my disbelief. 5 stars and my review aren’t enough for a novel this well done, but I gave it what I could. My only disappointment with this novel is that it had to end.

I picked this up thinking I’d read a few chapters today and more tomorrow since I was only on the 2nd chapter. ha ha ha. That’s not how it went. #anamericanmarriage is 308 pages of perfectly crafted words that whips up a category 5 hurricane of emotions that beats you all the way down yet finds a way to bring you all the way back up to leave you shakily standing at the end.

I kid you not I don’t know that I’ve ever read a book in one sitting (well I read 90% of it today) that pulled so strongly on every emotion my heart and brain knows. It truly is like a beautiful storm that touches your soul so deeply it feels like you finally have book hangover that you may not recover from.

If you’re looking for a traditional, feel-good love story, this isn’t the story for you. The story details the complexity of various forms of love and I loved the way it challenged me. At some point in the story, I loved and loathed each character but found their feelings to be understandable.

Not much actually happens before the climax, but it was a slow burn that I needed to get into the emotions of each character. So many gems are woven throughout the story and that’s what makes the intensity of the climax.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the climax itself, but I appreciate its intensity and symbolism. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and look forward to reading more of her work.

This book was written quite some time ago, and feels a little dated as you read it. However, the concepts presented are still relevant now for someone who is going through a relationship breakdown. I bought this book so that I could try to help my sister whose husband left her.

Before reading the book, I felt very out of my depth with knowing how to support her. After reading the book, I had a much better understanding of why relationships break down, and felt better equipped to offer thoughts and advice when my sister needed it.

If you are not a religious person (I am not) then it can be a bit overwhelming to get through all the bible references in the book. But if you are able to take these tongue-in-cheek, then you will still find the content useful and practical.

Often the “case studies” that the author uses sound a little bit too perfect, and I did wonder sometimes if he was talking about real people, or if he had conveniently made up the stories to fit in with each section in the book! Overall though, I think the author is genuine in the advice he offers.

He is clearly an experienced relationship counsellor / psychologist, and the concepts he presents give the reader some tools to deal with their relationship issues. The solutions offered in this book sound fabulous in theory, and I’m sure with persistence they could work for many people in healing broken spousal relationships.

One thing missing from the book is the “time” factor, though. There is a perception that if you follow these steps – A, B, C – all will be instantly rosy again. The book glosses over the fact that it can take months of work to even get the communication in a relationship back on par.

The steps also assume that the response from the other spouse will be “textbook”. There are so many variations in each couple’s relationship – there cannot possibly be a one-size-fits-all approach to saving a relationship.

Generally, though, a useful book for the relationship arsenal.

I just bought this book for my 23 year old son and his new bride. I hope the same great marriage for them.

My son had a jog a thon and wanted to earn as much as possible so he could get prizes. I didn’t have $300 to give to the school so looking online I found these boxes. These were perfect. an assortment of candy ( less caramello and way more kit kats are needed ) and a great carrying case.

He went door to door around our neighborhoods for about 3 weeks and was able to sell 4 boxes (208) candies. Carrying cases were great, no issues with candy packaging or quality.

We have no vending machines in our office, so we created a snack box. These are just a part of what we provide. We have an office of about 160 people (many who now work at home a couple of days each week), and last year we used the proceeds to donate nearly $1600 to two charities.

I’ve bought this in the past and usually am happy with it, but this time the chocolate did not taste right, like it had been on the shelf a little too long. Will try again one day in the future, but not now.

Growing up, I remember Hershey’s Miniatures being a treat that was for special occasions or when company was visiting. It always seemed like a more sophisticated candy because the four varieties of chocolate came individually wrapped in more subtle colors than other candy of the day.

If you are familiar with Eckhardt Tolle, this is a great read. Take your time. I’ve read it twice and gleaned a greater understanding on the second read. It’s a book you can always pick up and gain more insight, depending on where you are in your journey of awareness and being present.

A definite read for those wanting to extinguish the voice in your head of habitual hounding negative thoughts and self talk. Move into a deeper awareness of self and calm, being present in the Now.

This is the best book Ive ever read. Thinking spiritual thoughts dont make you spiritual. Kind, nice yes but not awake. True enlightenment comes when you dissolve thoughts and continually become present and stop living stories created by your ego.

Its easy to understand and needs to be kept close and reread taking lots of pauses. This is the most exciting book Ive ever read. Thank you Eckhart Tolle you are a true teacher.

I read my first Sarah Dessen book when I was twelve years old. A friend gifted me Along for the Ride for my birthday and the very next morning I was halfway into it. From twelve to almost nineteen, Sarah Dessen’s books are ones I’ve cried over and laughed and fallen in love with as I got to know, time and again, Auden, Eli, Remy, Dexter, Annabel, Owen, Macy, Wes, Ruby and all these other couples that taught me so much.

I remember myself over the last seven years through Sarah Dessen’s book, and it’s truly a magical feeling. Which is why, among the BOX FULL OF BOOKS that Penguin India sent me last week, the one I was most excited for was Once and for All.

To Sum It Up: Once and for All was the heart wrenching journey of a girl brought up by cynics who are waiting to be proven wrong and trying to figure out if putting your heart out there is worth the risk while managing chaotic weddings and bad first dates.

Long Story Short: I LOVED IT. This was definitely one of my top five Sarah Dessen books! Let’s break it Down: WRITING: Sarah has this distinctive, subtle form of writing that I’ve loved since book one that all of a sudden throws these beautiful and true lines at you.

I’ve loved this BRILLIANT author’s BRILLIANT writing since I was 12 and I don’t think it’ll ever change. PLOT: The one thing I love about Dessen’s books is that NONE of them are JUST Boy Meets Girl. There is always more to the story that just one romance, often involving a heart breaking personal journey from the girl’s side and it’s ALWAYS SO REAL.

It makes me connect with all of her characters in a way I usually don’t and I love it. CHARACTERS: I loved Louna from chapter one. I’m probably like her, a cynic until proven otherwise, scared to let what I’m feeling show.

I LOVE Sarah Dessen. I will read whatever she comes out with no matter how old I am. What I really love about her books is I am immediately taken back to 16 with every one. I thought this was a perfect summer read and very relevant to today’s culture.

I don’t really understand why no one really liked this book, I think it is one of my favorites. Also let’s talk about the names in this book because they are kind of strange Louna, Ambrose, Jilly, Michael Salem??? However, I did feel toward the end the book was dragging on.

You already knew what was going to happen and were literally just waiting for Louna to stop being such a baby, but I understand. All in all, I really did like this book and I will continue reading Sarah Dessen even as a twenty-something female.

I loved Louna’s romantic relationship with Ethan and her evolving relationship with Ambrose. These three characters and (discovering if) my hopes for their futures were the only things that made me continue reading the story.

Although the plot to the story wasn’t enjoyed by myself, I think many others would like it. My favourite part of the storyline was the ending, not because the story ended but it was what I hoped for and envisioned.

When Matthew Sutton comes into Kinsey Millhone’s office one afternoon, he comes with a tale about two men he’d seen burring something in the woods twenty-one years earlier. As a six-year-old, he believed their story that they were pirates digging for treasure, but after seeing an article about a kidnapping that took place about the same time, Matthew is certain there is a connection.

The catch? He doesn’t know where he was at the time. With very little to go on, Kinsey agrees to take the case. Will she find anything? This is an excellent book in the series. While we know more than Kinsey does for most of the book, watching Kinsey figure things out keeps the pages turning.

We spent time in the past as well as Kinsey’s present of 1988 to fully understand how things played out, and it always works. Kinsey is a fun main character, and a recurring series storyline comes back into play in this book, allowing for some growth for her.

The rest of the cast are just as strong. I knew going in that this book would have more content than I typically get in the cozies I read, but there was some stuff in the final quarter of the book that could have been trimmed without it impacting anything.

Still, overall, fans of this long running series will be happy with this book.

I waited a long time for this novel to come out. I had about given up on Ms. Grafton waiting for T is for Trespass so I was surprised when this one popped up so quick. The story has merit, but it was long in the telling and was quite confusing going back and forth between what happened in the 60’s and what was going on in the present.

Lot’s of characters, but not necessary hard to keep track of them. Also, I missed the whole Undertow premise so if someone can explain that to me I will be grateful. I kept thinking that she had to tie up all the loose ends and felt like she rushed through it in the final pages.

I got through it though and will patiently wait for the next one to arrive because I am a Grafton and Milhone fan. I’m sure she’s running out of interesting topics to go with captivating letters, V, W, X, Y and Z? I hope that we here more from Henry and that Kinsey reconciles with her relatives.

I liked the conclusion with her gramma. Maybe we’ll see a “happy ending” to the series.

While never disappointed by a Grafton alphabet book, U is for Undertow was especially satisfying, further enlightening the reader as to Kinsey’s family dynamics. right as they unfold before Kinsey’s eyes! The storylines in this book seemed myriad compared to others, yet so easy to follow.

Characters are well-defined and vivid. Kudos to Grafton for successfully implementing flashback–and doing so in full chapters. As a reader, Grafton never ceases to entertain and impress me. As a writer, she never ceases to set the bar to which I will never come close.

I don’t mind one bit.

Once again, Maryjanice Davidson hits it off with another great book in the series. I was hoping that this book would have much more action than the previous one, and I was so happy that it did! In this book.

Betsy finds herself alone for the first time since she became Undead. Although she doesn’t totally realize it right away, it does eventually dawn on her and she has to fight to the finish to save the people she loves- so she can have her wedding of course! Another exceptional piece to the series, and I highly recommend it! A+.

Another great book in the Undead series by Maryjanice Davidson. This is the 6th in the series & didn’t dissapoint. Betsy suddenly finds herself all alone. Everyone has some-what dissapeared for some reason or another & at a really terrible time.

Then theres the wedding she’s trying to organise with an unwilling groom, who has also vanished. Poor Jessica is laid up sick in hospital. Marc finally hooks up. When he’s telling Besty its one of the funnest scenes.

There’s new friends & old enemies & a revelation from Detective Nick. Hmmm. The only bad thing having to wait for the next one.

I bought this book to fill in the series and it was as great as the rest. Don’t be “spooked” by the vampire genre! These books are for people that love a book that makes them laugh aloud and want a little light romance.

Witty dialogue and a fun protagonist in addition to supporting players make this book a ‘ must read. ‘ This book falls in the latter part of the series and I highly recommend the purchase of the prior books.

It’s a stand alone, but like all series, more enjoyable when read in order.
