20 Best Topsoil For Sod (2022 Updated)

Good soil for growing in pots or outdoors- good ratio of peat to compost- light and airy, my plants agree. I have zero complaints 🐷

I was so surprised to see this amazing product for sale on Ace Hardware.

Love using local brands!

It has some sand, but not enough to make this cheap garbage. You’ll have to stay on top of watering when it’s hot. It’ll hold moisture between waterings once flowers are planted and packed in your pot.

The peat is rich and fluffy! Some comments say this is topsoil (clay. rocks, sticks, mulch), it’s NOT topsoil! Is it Miracle Grow? No. But worth the money if you know what you’re doing when gardening on a budget! Large bag came in a box and VERY quickly – two days!.

Well I just received my 40lb bag of soil, only it was 28lbs, old, dried out and basically just bad. I wouldn’t bother buying from this seller unless they assure you it hasn’t been sitting in a warehouse somewhere for months drying up.

Clearly there was 12lbs of moisture and nutrients that were missing because of whatever happened to the bag. That doesn’t happen over night or in transit.

Wow im so disappointed i have used this for years and now 2021 it is nothing more then mulch. What happened? This used to be the best i always recommended now its a waste of money. Its more expensive but way less quality wish i would have known before i bought my yearly supply.

I admit, I have not had the best luck growing things. So I was reluctant to buy a fig tree. But I do believe I’ve got it now, with the help of Miracle Grow Garden Soil for Trees and shrubs. After digging the hole putting some of the soil in the hole and filling it all around with Miracle Garden soil, the tree is flourishing.

I love the rich texture of the soil coming from the bag. I have new growth sprouting and a promise of figs this year. I’m in growing zone 9A so the longer season gives me more time to plant and enjoy.

What’s next? A lemon tree, now that I have the confidence and Miracle Grow garden soil for trees and shrubs.

I mixed this soil with some other topsoil I had and used it in planting some new ornamental shrubs in my yard. It is supposed to hold moisture in but it’s a little too soon to tell if it does or doesn’t.

The shrubs are thriving so far. It will take some time for me to decide if the Scott’s is worth using again. I will try to check back in another month or 2 and report back on the shrubs progress. FYI.

2 of the shrubs were planted without the Scott’s topsoil so I can compare if the soil makes a difference.

I find this good quality, enriched soil by Miracle-Gro to be a useful and beneficial product. The soil is rich with nutrients so plants have an abundant food supply to support healthy development, and too build strong roots.

Since application to my trees and shrubs, I have noticed healthier looking plantings, and less leaf yellowing. I am grateful that this soil has Moisture Control technology for protection, since I have a tendency to overwater my plantings.

I needed some good soil for outdoors to till in with the dirt in our yard to have some nutrients in the dirt for a small garden. I never bought this kind before, but I’m glad I did. Combined with the added organic nutrients, It’s got enough of coco and perlite mixed in for a lightweight and spongy texture.

It holds water well for up to 5-7 days on long sunny days before you need to water your plants again. Overall Good soil at a Good $ price compared to others. Roots Organics has a good reputation for that which is really great.

I’m a customer for life. Im glad I found it online which is awesome, because it’s hard to find the soil you are looking for in my town other than Walmart or Lowes, Home Depot.

The 2 complaints I read were stupid fools. This is excellent stuff and make my own when I need 20 or more cubic feet, and this has everything I like in mine. For smaller amounts this is great stuff at a very good price.

I can’t make it cheaper in small amounts. There are only a few brands that rate this good and the others were to expensive so I tried this and now I’m back for more.

For me the best pre-made soil i have ever used. when I started I used fox farm but that dirt always has nats, which isn’t a big deal pretty common with organic soil but roots is like 1 out of 10 has nats fox farm is like every other bag and it burns seedlings.

roots I can put seeds right in it and no problems. been using this soil for about 8 years and the only thing better IMO would be making your own compost based soil.

The best potting soil I have ever purchased. I love putting my hands in this dark, rich soil. Some potting soils contain large wood chips and even rocks. You’re not going to find those types of fillers in this product.

Here where I live, in Texas, we luckily have two planting seasons; the usual late spring, after frost/summer season, and also the fallish season. We normally only freeze here in late January or February, if at all, living near the Gulf of Mexico.

We take advantage of that extra second planting season time. Although we have a compost pile, we usually use most of it on the first planting season. Even though I continue to add and grow our compost, it does take time to get it ready to use.

I’ve learned that if we wish to do our second garden planting, we need ready made, rich compost-like soil to have good results. I’m very impressed with the Miracle Grow Garden Soil for Vegetables and Herbs.

Some fall seasons bring rain to us, but this year, like a lot in the past, we are having many beautiful sunny mild weather days, and not so much rain. So the fact that this soil holds moisture is a huge help.

The thing I love the most, is the dark, rich, compost-like density that this product holds. I can continue to nurture my own compost pile for the spring garden, yet use this to have a healthy fall harvest.

My plants and herbs seem to really like this soil, and are doing well, so we plan to continue using it in years to come. With grocery prices soaring, we all can use gardening to not only save money, but feel good about food that we grow ourselves.

I’m thinking about adding a bag or two, of this soil to my compost pile in the spring and actually making a much bigger home garden next year So far, the plants are growing well and happy, and with a little bit of water and nutrients.

I am confident that we will have a great fall/early winter harvest once again this year. I highly recommend this soil as being dark, rich, and plant happy. Although it’s best for our outdoor garden, I also plant fresh herbs and some easy to grow indoor veggies, like green onions and some herbs, and I’m using this nice rich soil to do so, and they are also doing well.

Ruined my tomatoes. Oh, they grew like crazy and had a ton of fruit. But as the tomatoes started to turn red EVERY ONE had blossom rot due to an inadequacy of minerals in the soil. Oh and this company claims they back their product.

This is only true if you keep the receipt and UPC code from the bag. I naturally trusted what I was buying…with a photo of flowers and vegetables…including a tomato on the bag was formulated correctly.

My back yard has terrible clay dirt. I’ve been very unlucky at growing vegetables and herbs in the clay dirt. I am very optimistic to use the Miracle-Gro Garden Soil for Vegetables and Herbs. Miracle-Gro is a very popular brand.

I’ve put this Miracle-Gro Garden Soil in pots and am growing basil, lavender, mint, parsley, and rosemary indoors. The Miracle-Gro Garden Soil for Vegetables and Herbs is enriched with a blend of compost, plant food, and other essential nutrients.

I’ve always had good results when planting with Scott’s miracle grow, in fact the best results. Just follow instructions and your climate guides for planting. There are some generic brands out there, I’ve had best results with spending that little extra on Scott’s.

Lots of variety mixes available for vegetables, flowers, and other specific gardening needs. I certainly wouldn’t sow my poppies into anything that’s not mixed with Scott’s planting soil. Highly recommend.

Of course starting your own composting pile at home is best for the environment, still doesn’t hurt to mix in a little scotts.

I have a very extensive collection of plants with many being cacti and succulents. I take a lot of pride in my plants and want to give them the best soil. Miracle grow soil is the best that you can buy that is premixed.

It’s perfect for holding just the right amount of moisture for the right amount of time. Cacti and succulents like water but they like big drinks every do often and that’s it. Then they need to be dry.

They don’t do well in soil that stays moist. So this is perfect for that and it’s the only kind I buy.

This potting mix is actually the only potting soil that I purchase. It allows plants to grow full and you will notice a difference within approximately 5 days after re-potting. It also allows plants to produce some of the most vibrant blooms!! I’ve witnessed this mix bring plants back to life (recently brought my 2 flamingo flowers back) when they were at the brink of dying.

I can attest to this product being called “Miracle”-Gro!! I absolutely love it and definitely recommend it!.

Scotts Foundation makes sense BUT not if it has gotten damp. The product is very hygroscopic (moisture-absorbing) and clumps together worse than any other lawn product I’ve used over the past 40 years.

Once the particles begin to stick together, you are doomed. It will not flow, and you’ll never get it through your spreader, even at the widest open setting. You will end up discarding the entire bag, thereby wasting ~$30.

A shame, because if you get a good bag (as I have before) it is dry, free-flowing, and great for your soil. If you have $30 to gamble, go for it — but lottery tickets have the same downside (losing your entire $30) but a much higher upside.

I used this along with the Jonathan Green soil conditioner last year. No weeds this spring. All my neighbors got the dandelions. Conditioning the soil is the only thing that I did last year differently than I had done in the past.

I have to believe this stuff made the difference. You will not be disappointed.

The composition of my yard is clay. As a result, standing water is common, with a somewhat “squishy” feel to walking on the grass. I’ve always been looking at possible solutions to amend the soil, and make it less clay filled.

I tried the new Scott’s Foundation Soil Improver. The claims seem targeted directly at my needs. The application is pretty much by use through a spreader directly applied to the yard. I started to notice a slight improvement with the next rain storm we had.

Standing water was much less, and established grass seemed to grow faster. Overall, having it come in 5000 Sq. Ft. bags at the price of close to $50 would add up pretty quick for sections of your yard at a time, but the results are there.

Product works great.

I bought many hundreds of dollars of this “purple” bag Garden Soil and Raised Bed soils. I used it in freshly made raised beds AND also in grow bags cause I didn’t want too light of a soil for the bags.

Just one small raised bed took 10 bags and. and I have a several other beds that I started and plantings in grow bags. MISTAKE. My plants with this soil. veggies and flowers. just sat there. barely grew AND after a few weeks they all showed signs of nitrogen deficiency.

It is marketed to “fertilize” up to 90 days. I honestly do not think the fertilizer part is effective at all in any of the soil I purchased of this brand. I did wonder. is it only good for 90 days AFTER bagged or 90 days after planting.

I’d say less than a few weeks. I am a old gardener and grow most of my food for at least 50+ years. This is NOT dependable for fertilization and I’m not sure if it is helpful with moisture control. When I started noticing a problem I went to another brand and not a bit of a problem with my starts or direct seeding.

SO I have had to resort to supplementing fertilizers and all the signs of nitrogen deficiency have gone and plants are growing. NOW I learned not to buy more expensive soils with “fertilizer” and just buy the bargain stuff and add my own fertilizer and not depend on such as this.

Outstanding soil. I started 500+ plants this year using a hydroponic system. When ready to transplant I used this soil. They have all doubled in size in two weeks. This is excellent soil and I am using a product called Sea Magic with it.

I’ve been using Miracle Grow potting mix for longer than I can remember, 3 to 4 large bags every growing season. Never had any issues with the product until my most recent purchase. When I opened the bag the first couple of scoops seemed normal then I started getting large clumps of some fibrous material.

My initial reaction was that it was fiberglass but upon closer inspection it appeared to be some type of organic material. It was dry and hairy in appearance and seemed to have black mold embedded in it.

The further I got into the bag the more of these clumps I encountered. The clumps were baseball to softball sized, very compact and there were over a dozen of them in the bag. Each clump had to be thrown aside as they would not fit in the pots I was using, nor did they appear to look like any potting material I had ever come across.

I would have thought that the potting mix would go through a screening process prior to bagging but that is not possible as these clumps would never had made it through such a process. Long story short, either Miracle Grow had a breakdown in their processing of potting mix or they have eliminated the screening process to save money.

In either case, this bag was a waste of money. I’ve seen cheaper potting mixes on the shelves but always gone for the Miracle Grow because of past experience. I think that it’s time to sample the alternatives.

I purchased several bags of MG potting mix for container vegetable gardening. I have used this product in the past over about a ten year period. The materials in the mix just purchased are not the quality ingredients I have used in the past.

In the past the mix was more uniform with smaller bark pieces and uniform shredded peat with enough perlite to actually promote good drainage it was easily used to fill cell packs. Most importantly it drained well and did not compact.

The current mix is garbage compared to what it used to be. The stuff I got h to his year has large chunks of wood and sticks large rocks huge chunks of hard organic matter globs peat like material the size of golf balls.

The mix does not drain well and packs down tightly. There is not enough perlite to maintain a good air to water ratio when wet. The mix used to be very similar to a traditional Cornell Peat lite mix but no longer.

It does not perform well doesn’t drain well and overpriced for the quality of product.

This is the best potting soil locally available, as far as I know. Miracle Gro soils contain artificial chemical fertilizers, which are unbalanced for plants and soil. Milorganite is a travesty – using the sludge of human wastes collected from the Milwaukee water treatment plant as “organic fertilizer” deceptively leaving the buyer unaware that human feces also contain excreted heavy metals, pharmaceutical drugs, chemotherapy, parasites, etc.

, which is not what most people want on their food. Happy Frog also has the fungi that enable plant roots to take up nutrients. Just putting fish meal or kelp or worm castings or any other outstanding natural fertilizer on potted plants (which is needful, because the soil doesn’t have all of the microbes and worms, etc.

, that garden beds should if treated well), doesn’t automatically get the nutrients up into the plants. That takes the fungi. If you are growing vegetables and fruit organically in containers, this is the soil to use.

Happy Frog Potting Soil is my number one go to for most all my potting soil needs with the exception only to cacti/succulent potting medium. When unavailable at my local Farm and Fleet, I am known to drive to the nearest Farm and Fleet where product is available.

When using other standard potting soils, I must amend the mix with additional Pearlite, worm castings, horticulture charcoal, and peat moss to ensure good drainage, soil microbes, etc. Not only are these additional products costly, I have the mixing mess to clean up as well the extra time invested.

With Happy Frog, all I need to do is open the bag and start potting! All the amendments mentioned above are already perfectly blended into the soil as well additional beneficial ingredients. All I need to do is open the bag and start potting with total confidence that I am giving my expensive houseplants the best growing medium possible.

First things first, for all of the reviews complaining about a moldy layer and some gnats resulting from this soil, keep in mind there is manure and compost in this mix. It is going to need to be turned and cared for.

Use a little Neem Oil and dawn dish detergent diluted in a bit of water and you should be fine with the gnats. I would not use this soil for inside plants because of the gnats, however. Great for the garden if you are willing to do the maintenance.

Higher quality soil needs a higher level of attention. We love this soil for our gardening. This brand is hard to find at times so load up on the 2 cu ft bags when you see them on sale for less than $35.

Just my tip.

This is not even topsoil and left my lawn littered with rocks. I bought this when Ace ran out of my normal topsoil. Usually I trust their brand, but they should pull this product from the shelves immediately.

It was very clumpy coming out of the bag, and when I broke it up I found that the clumps were *dirt-caked gravel*. There was also a high mulch content and patches of pure sand that is no better than the clay soil I’m amending.

Getting my money back wouldn’t make us even. I’m going to have to go back through my yard and remove the gravel left behind. Absolute catastrophe.

This is Not dirt to fill or plant grass seed. It was wet. I dried it enought to “spread” it. It hardened so hard no seed comes up, I had to break it up, and now I’m going to the nursery to get dirt the right way.

All these bagged products are the worst ever. Get dirt from your local nursery delivered and use a wheel barrel.

We bought this because our local Ace here in GA did not have what we normally buy in stock; Cowart-brand premium top soil. This stuff had a lot more bark-type mulch material in it than the Cowart does, and incidentally was almost twice as expensive.

The Cowart is obviously a higher quality top soil, and the lower price is a bonus, so we’ll be sticking with it from now on.

This is great top soil. Took out a bunch of pavers/stones and replaced it grass. Area was bumpy and this was easy to dump out of the bag, spread, and level. No clumps of foreign material. Had enough sand in the mixture so it did not compact a lot.

Lots of natural materials. I like this product because it does not contain fertilizer. I live near a stream so the lack of fertilizer is environmentally friendly. Perfect! The grass liked it also. Grass was growing in 4 days!.

Great product that I needed. I don’t see any problems with this soil. Going back to get more.

I needed some good soil for my sad garden. Read these reviews and raced to Ace to pick up three bags. Got them home, dumped them out, and the “soil” looks no different from what I could get at half the price from big box stores.

It seems mostly to be mulch; hardly anything resembling actual soil. I hate buying stuff in plastic bags where you can’t actually see what you’re buying.

The entire bag was full of worms, all in various stages of growth, some babies so small you could hardly see them. In all my years of gardening, I have never seen such a thing, the bags were infested.

This wasn’t a case of 1 or 2 ‘bonus worms’, this was at the level of concern. I informed the store manager, he said he would “pull the pallet”, which he never did. In the day of invasive species like the Asian jumping worm and the hammerhead worm, you would think people would be a tad more concerned about what they are selling.

I reached out to Jolly Gardener too, but that’s a different review.

My wife used to grow herbs and cat grass for furry ones. Worked very and was a great mix. Has enough leftover to grow some indoor over winter. Clean product.

We bought this soil to add into the ground around new trees the we were planting. The consistency of this soil was great, and the trees are doing very well. You can’t beat the price for the quality.

I screened out the large wood chips. However, my tomato seedlings yellowed and died using this product. Will not purchase it again.
