20 Best Trailer Light Kit (2022 Updated)

The instructions do not make sense, they were clearly written as blanket instructions for several light kits. It talks about attaching grounds off the amber lights with the white wires provided however there is no white wire, the ground was a tab built into where it screws into the trailer (when you mount screws it pushes the tab flush with the trailer).

Same with tail lights. The mounting bolts act as the ground to the trailer despite being instructed that they had a white ground wire. The wiring harness provided was shorted out. Had to buy another harness elsewhere to correct issues.

Save your self ALOT of trouble and stay away from this garbage. It was just out of return window before I got around to installing it.

After having bought a minimum of six sets of these lights, I can attest to their quality and excellent value! The light housings are well constructed. The wiring is of a substantial gauge and looks like it will last for years! And the included harnesses and components make installation a snap! I get professional looking results, every time! For under $20!! I highly recommend this lighting kit! If you’ve been putting off installing new lights on your trailer, just do it! For a few bucks and an hour or so of your time, you’ll have a trailer that not only looks better, but is safer, as well!.

Great quality. Couldn’t believe the low price. My only complaint is the tag bracket is plastic but they may all be and at least it came with one. The installation was quick and easy and works like a “new” one.

All in all, this setup is a cost effective trailer wire & light replacement kit. However, it does have many downfalls. I installed this kit on a 16 foot flatbed. 1. Depending on the length of your trailer, and how the original wiring was routed, you may come up short.

I had to extend 4 of the wires to install correctly. Thankfully I reused portions of the old wire harness, but had to purchase butt splices. 2. Requires 5 grounding points (each light plus the connector), rather than tying all together and grounding in one location.

I see this being an issue down the road. 3. Side marker lights are added into the harness via suitcases or piggyback connectors. Most trailers have the same tongue length, so the manufacturer could have easily had them prewired into the harness.

Also, the wires are about 6 inches, so required extra wire to tie into the harness. More butt splices. 4. The left taillight has a clear plastic bottom to shine light on your license plate. The plastic insert had a gap large enough to stick a #3 common screwdriver in, so before install I sealed all around it with clear silicone.

5. This kit does not come with any sort of protective sheathing for the wire. I knew this when I purchased it, so went to Lowe’s and got 40ft. of plastic flextubing. Unprotected wires is why I had to replace the original setup.

So yeah its a good a starting point, but know that you will need extra hardware. Took me 6+ hours to install, including 2 trips to Lowe’s. Finally, be prepared to drill some holes in the metal frame of your trailer, both for the corner light mounting, and for grounds.

After 10 months with this kit, I am happy for the most part. There are some complaints of the kit not being all LEDs, but mine is. As fast as them being submersible, I couldn’t tell you. They seem to be sealed, but I don’t trust any of the lower priced sets to be able to stand a dunking.

Therefore I mounted my lights high on my job boat trailer. The lights are nice,bright, and fully functional when they have an electrical connection. There lies the problem. Every time I have a problem with them, it is in the wiring.

When I start stripping insulation back to reconnect, the wire is corroded to powder. No saltwater, so I couldn’t tell you what is causing the corrosion. Looks like corroded battery terminals inside the insulation.

I just happened to find some trailer wiring of heavier gauge at a thrift store for $4. Lucky me. The lights are worth it if you can get some better wire. Other than that you might want to spend a little more, because it will probably cost you a little more in the long run.

Lights worked fine, but wiring is absolute garbage. Wired these lights up in July when I had some time to an old landscaping trailer. Install went fine, tested the lights and everything worked properly.

Didn’t actually drive trailer until October, it literally never moved an inch in the driveway. I went to haul some limbs off and hooked it up and no lights! Checked the ground on the trailer and the wire actually just disintegrated in my hand.

Tried cutting it short and putting in a jumper wire, but you can’t even strip the wire it’s so brittle. Not to mention, the actual wire inside the coating is corroded and crumbling as well. I assume that the lights work fine, but there’s no way to know because the wires are horrible.

I don’t think I could have found a worse wiring kit if I had tried, this is beyond worthless.

Works great. Very bright. Easy to install. A little loose in the socket.

Direct replacement for the old lights in my older trailer. Working great so far.

Like the brightness of LED over incandescent bulbs. I have Hopkins LED lights on a utility trailer and they are very bright. Bought these low-profile Hopkins submersible lights for a boat trailer. Haven’t installed them as of this writing.

When installed and used, if found to be not water proof, another review may be forthcoming. Expect, however, they will work and perform as designed.

We installed these on a railcar that we need to travel to Minnesota for repairs. They are bright enough to be seen a half mile away. They were installed directly to a power source and are controlled by a toggle switch.

Easy installation.

Wire leads on lights were very short making it tedious to attach to wire harness. The wire harness itself was too short for my trailer and needed to be extended. Otherwise, they seem to work as they should.

These were supposed to be waterproof and so I was confused that there was a large hole in the back where the wires come out and the red lens doesn’t have any kind of seal. There is a kind of drain hole in the bottom also.

So, I wondered if I should have gone for something higher end as I was unpacking them to install. But, since time was short, I went ahead and installed ’em. They’ve been immersed in water multiple times and worked afterward, so I decided that there is an internal portion that is sealed.

We still unhook the electrical connection from the vehicle when backing the boat trailer into the water, but we’ve had no issues with reconnecting the electrical plug and driving away after a boating outing–lights have worked great.

They’ve also be in rain and didn’t seem to fail (we didn’t get out to check, but can see the side-lights glow on the boat body).

I bought these on impulse when i saw them on the shelf. I had been looking at other similar products online for around the same price. I figured I would regret buying these locally for such a good price, but I actually been very happy with these, and I like that they come with an actual ground wire, instead of being grounded through the mounting bolts.

This way I can run a ground wire from the lights, directly to the plug at the truck and not have to worry about whether or not the lights are getting a good ground. This had been a big issue for me in the past but isn’t anymore.

I will definitely be buying more for my other trailers as I’m working on getting rid of all the incandescent lights.

1) All the Trailer Lights kits I’ve bought in the past included the cable; this one did not, so I needed a. second trip to the Marine store 20 miles away to get wire. Once. installed 2) Even the Insteuctiins say to use the Lock Washers on the Studs, but there were no Lock Washers in the kit.

Lights look great. nice and bright compared to my original incandescent bulbs. The only problem is the wire wasnt long enough for my 18. 5 boat trailer. We had to add a few feet to each run to connect the lights to the back of the trailer which means 8 more connections to go underwater and possibly fail??????? Seriously.

they couldnt add a few more feet to the runs!?!?!? Not like I have a 26 boat! Its smaller than average and there wasnt enough wire! Thats ?? ??!!!!.

Excellent. Perfect fit replacement for my boat trailer lights. They’re bright too, easily seen during the day. I like the way the bulbs are sealed within the enclosure. I added stainless steel washers under the nuts to be a little more secure.

I’ll update this post in a year to let everyone know how they handled salt water immersion.

Easy direct replacement for older Optronics incandescent lights that came on boat trailer. Used heat shrink butt connectors (not included) and liquid electrical tape for all connections. Direct replacement for older units from same manufacturer.

I purchased these lights to throw on my small boat trailer. They were very easy to install. Unfortunately, the passenger side lights did not work. I thought it might have been my trailer wiring, but my light tester showed I was getting power.

I rate this a two star for now. I am just assuming that I might have gotten a faulty light which happens sometimes. I will swap them out in hopes that the new set works.

Bought a used trailer that had broken lights on it and had been looking at replacement lights at other places when I saw these in the Academy Newspaper Ad. I was a bit skeptical because of the super low price, but after reading the other reviews, I decided to give them a try and I was happy I did.

I got these put on my trailer (after also replacing the old wiring) and these lights work perfectly! I am very satisfied and would purchase these again, if needed.

I looked on the package for anything that may indicate these were not suitable for saltwater, but found nothing. So i purchased them and installed them on my trailer. They lasted a total of 3 launches and 3 recoveries.

After that the interior of the brake light area was so corroded the bulbs would not work, and could not be removed from the bracket. While trying to get the bulb out, it broke and cut my thumb because it was so corrossion-welded into the bracket.

Upon checking the brackets, the area the wires go into the lights, had holes at least twice the size of the wires. So much for the term “Submersible”. I wasted my money, and am writing this review hoping it saves you from wasting yours.

This is probably the 4th set of tail lights I have purchased for my trailer. The problem with all of them, including this one, is not the water/moisture getting into the inside of the light but the way that the bulbs are seated.

The problem is that the bulbs come loose over time or build up corrosion. The sealing of these lights seems to protect against the moisture getting in and causing corrosion, however, the seating of the bulbs is not the best.

But all in all this tail light is much better than the non-sealed versions.

My bulb type trailer lights quit working so I decided to replace them with some LED type lights. LED lights are supposed to last longer and have fewer maintenance issues-only time will tell on those features.

This particular set is seemingly well made and sturdy looking even though they are very affordable compared to all the other models I investigated. Many similar LED light sets are twice the price and more.

I had to make some mounting plates as my trailer was an older model with the classic round lights so the mounting tabs were not wide enough for these new style lights-you may have this problem as well.

They work great-very bright compared to the old ones and I like the side markers that are built into the lights. Overall, they are a well made product that Academy sells for much less than the several other sellers I checked.

Nice choice if you need new trailer lights and want to upgrade without spending big bucks.

I didn’t get these on sale. You can probably find comparable lights for less but the return policy and convenience of Canadian Tire are hard to beat. The lights do not seem to need to be grounded to the tow vehicle as the ground lug attaches via a wire to the trailer.

I just connected my ground wires to the bolt that affixes them. It has a license plate illuminator that works well. Lights are bright and seem well built but the bolts to attach them can be pushed through pretty easy if you aren’t careful.

This should be owned by all utility trailer owners that loan the trailer or actually use it. Lights get broken, bulbs burn out, it’s a great set for adding brand new lights from scratch, or repairing any broken lights.

Just switch it out and your on your way. I would use better connections like heat shrink butt connectors myself or solder. Those “scotch lock” parts are junk don’t use them.

Poor quality. I purchased this item for a re-wire on a utility trailer, after a couple of hours modifying the trailer to accept the side markers and doing the complete install. Tested the light system on 2 separate vehicles, but half the light functions did not work.

Install was done per instructions and even checked the online videos, and followed same procedure as covered in the install videos. One of the vehicles has a test adapter for flat plug setup, and no matter where I grounded the indicators flashed error for short somewhere in circuit.

All connections were done with crimp butt connectors with heat shrink, not the cheap push connectors provided, so the connections/wiring was not the issue. I assume the short is somewhere in the plug assembly, since I checked all wiring, with all connections tight, and wiring runs were undamaged.

As I read the other reviews, I realized after I installed the two lights what the real issue was. It is a grounding problem. I had exactly the same problem as others described (poor, dull or no lights) so I replaced the 4 lock washers with star washers in order to get better ground connections.

You can get these at any hardware store. The lock washers that were provided with this unit does not guarantee good ground connections. Another way to fix this problem is to scrape the paint where the lock washer makes contact with the trailer.

The star washer solution is a much easier fix because it digs into the paint as you tighten the nuts. Problem solved. (As mentioned above, the two screws projecting from the rear of each fixture need to be well grounded.

The manufacturer should supply these instead of lock washers) I still feel that $25. 00 is a great price once the unit is properly installed. , Hope this helps other readers.

These lights were a perfect fit for the ones that I replaced. I’ve only had them for about a week. So far so good. I used barrel connectors instead of the supplied wire nuts. Don’t forget to buy heat shrink to put around the connectors to help keep water away from the copper wiring.

I purchased these lights to replace conventional bulb lights. They are just as bright as my van lights, perhaps a bit brighter, but not glaring. It is nice that you can test these with a 9-volt battery at the plug – easier troubleshooting.

This was an easy replacement for the incandescent lighting on my utility trailer. Installation was easy and the quality of light is amazing. No problems with visibility and, crazy as it sounds, they are just fun to look at! Highly recommend.

Popped the defective one off the passenger side of my truck and then popped the new one in the socket. It illuminates when signal arm is activated, when I turn on my hazard lights or press the brake with my foot.

I was worried that this wouldn’t fit as my existing light was actually 6. 5 x 2. 25 inches. This light is also 6. 5 x 2. 25 inches and was a perfect fit! It came with a wiring harness as well if you’re retro fitting this, but my trailer was already wired the same so I didn’t need it.

After getting the lights I replaced one on my jet ski trailer. Same hook up no rewiring. I got two so I could have an extra. No sooner did I turn around to check my snowmobile trailer lights and one was gone on that trailer too.

I was lucky to order two. Easy peasy.

We pull a lot of stuff and these lights are as handy as a pocket on a shirt. They will stick to anything metal and have a red side and yellow side. The plug into your existing flat trailer light plug and work exactly as they should.

We keep a set in our trucks just in case we have trailer light malfunctions. Easier than a roadside repair. They are cheap but will save your ass in a pinch.

Arrived early plug them up stuck them on my trailer and away i went very very good product cheeper then harbor freight highly recommend these

Very cheap. I broke it while pulling it out of the packaging. I just cut the wiring and wired up the trailer with existing lights

Bought this kit and wired it up. The running lights and turn signals work both sides, but only when the vehicle lights are on. When the vehicle lights are turned off, the turn signals still work a little but the bulb is dim.

No brake lights at all, lights on or off. I tested the truck on another trailer (coincidentally with a very similar if not the same light kit) and everything works fine. Returned light kit and exchanged for new one, same model C6423.

Rewired, plugged in, same exact issues. Tried other trailer again. Still working fine. So it’s not the truck. Could it be that I bought TWO defective light sets in a row? Out of time and patience. Returning this set and buying a different brand.

I haven’t installed yet but expect from other reviews it should be easy. I do have to comment however that the information online. The description describes side lights with the kit and the picture shows amber side lights in addition to the sidelights in the tail light assemblies.

If you’re expecting there to be amber sidelights with this kit you will be disappointed. The description and the photo should be changed for this item.

Great lights, they were a nearly perfect fit for my old trailer, I only had to lightly ream the bolt holes, easy install. Th one thing I would have appreciated that was not included – a simple guide to the light wires – of course I figured out which was which, but a little note on each color would have been handy.

also, though the two lights i the set look identical the are not, the bill of lading in the box was the only clue the only one of them could be used one the side with the license plate – they both look the same with the clear lens on the side for the plate lamp, and they have the same wires but only one will do other job.

Again, a little note would have saved me time. Again, overall a great light set – I would recommend and I would buy again if i had another application for this type.

I pulled an old trailer out of the pasture to repair it and get it back on the road. There was a tight fit to install these lights in a tube and the dimensions on the web site were accurate. The lights fit perfectly, easy to install and they work great!.

They installed easily (once I figured out that the mount bolts were the chassis electrical ground connection). If you hook up the wires and don’t have the lights bolted to the metal trailer, they won’t work.

The white wire That attaches to the car outlet must also be grounded with one of the ring terminal lugs crimped on the wire and bolted to the trailer chassis. I used putty to seal the trailer light hole where the wire enter the lights to keep moisture out).

It didn’t look like the wire openings were sealed (a little putty did the trick). I’m happy with the lights so far (hope they last a long time).

I bought this kit after giving up on trying to fix the wiring on my 25 year old Snow Bear utility trailer. It took me about an hour to install, and then I had to run a separate ground wire for one of the taillights which wouldn’t flash properly.

The instruction covered this. The kit is very complete with lots of connectors and wire. I probably have enough wire left over to do another trailer. The most difficult part was removing the old taillights; I had to grind off the nuts.

The new lights fit right into the holes on the bracket. Also, it helps to use the old wires to pull the new wires through. I wouldn’t use the license plate bracket; it’s made of plastic and looks flimsy.

But I didn’t need it anyway.

Everything about this kit was really good except for the connector to the vehicle. It was made of very soft rubber and was really hard to connect to the receptacle on the vehicle. With previous connectors I did not have to crawl under the car to be absolutely certain that connector was lined up perfectly.

smaller- flat design-not old-style w/p led with bolts fused into plastic- to save materials,-nice test battery switch- mark your wires , instruction always connect ground wires -to the ground. -You could do better with their larger kit! not standard threaded bolts.

-don’t lose/even 1 bolt or nut. with square head, bolts slide into Slots. only 2 directions. had to make new mount brackets. short wires, -mounts only one way-or your liscence plate loght does not lign up.

Every year when I get my boat trailer ready to go and get it inspected, I had a problem with getting the lights to work. The culprit was corrosion caused by immersion in acidic river water. Ever hear of acid rain? Well, it ultimately ends up in our river.

Every time I launch the boat he light sockets get wet. On the old lights th lamp sockets are cheap sheet metal stampings that are hard to clean to get good electrical contact between the socket and the lamp.

These LED lights are sealed and, as a result, I have had no more problems.

These lights do not work properly. We wired and grounded the wire. Tester showed 11 volts. Lights come on but blinkers and brake lights do not function. I will not recommend these to anyone. We haven’t opened the third box.

I’m sure it’s the same.

nice, everything you need to do a great job of wiring. great quality( just like other guys that cost four times as mush). Very happy with my light kits. YES Kits, I have now bought two kits.

Bought this to replace my trailer’s broken tail-light- it was an exact replacement. I take my trailer off-road sometimes and this one time I ended up hitting the tail-light on a stump. Installation was a breeze.

I spliced the old feed wires to wires of the new tail-light- pushed them inside to get the splice out of the weather. Didn’t need to use the 20ft of wire that came with this. This new tail-light works better than the original.

I like the window at the bottom used to light up the license plate (the old one didn’t have that). Everything worked out great!.

Bought these to replace the original lights on an old folding 4×8 ft utility trailer. Worked great and easy to install. Don’t twist the wire nut too hard or it will break off the end of the twisted strands and be jammed up.

I had a couple old wire nuts I could use instead, or just go with electrical tape. I didn’t reconnect to the sidelights on the trailer, and those aren’t included.

All as shown. FYI, not marine grade, not waterproof but all as shown. I bought it for the wire harness and license plate holder and it was great for that!

I only needed the two individual Trailer Back Lights to upgrade to LED style, but got the entire kit on Sale for cheaper than buying them each individually. I will keep the extra parts as back-ups in an emergency.

Nothing could be easier to install, and I am not an electrician at all. You need to match the wires by color and make sure you ground with the white wire. The white wire has a ring connecter on it that fits over the mounting bolt making that easy also.

To make sure I had a good ground the white wire, I did scrap a little paint off around the bolt hole. I used a flat tip screwdriver and just scrapped a tiny bit of paint off, not enough to show once covered.

I then put the light into place, slipped the washer onto the bolt and then put the white wire with the ring over the washer. Tightened the nut down while holding the white ring wire in place so it did not spin and break until snuggly tight.

I do recommend putting the washer on first before the white ring wire so the ring lays flat with as much contact as possible. The washer is what actually is touching the metal of the trailer where you scrap the paint off.

Then attach the wires to the correct color. The only time I hesitated was when I was attaching the driver’s side and needed a YELLOW and BROWN wire. At first glance I thought my trailer had a WHITE and BROWN wire.

I stopped for a second and thought I would just treat my white wire as a yellow and see what happens. But when I pulled the wire to cut it as long as possible, I realized my wire was Yellow where protected from the weather, and the white color was just a faded Yellow from being sun bleached.

Another thing I recommend before clipping your trailer wires, is to plug the trailer into your vehicle and verify that the old lights are working. That way if you install the new lights and have a problem, you know it was okay BEFORE you messed with something.

Of course that is assuming your current lights work and you are upgrading to LED trailer lights.

I needed to replace an old set of incandescent lights because I had to fiddle with the bulbs and sockets everytime I used the trailer. I saw these and read the 1 & 2 star ratings before buying. The negative reviews pointed out the following problems; poor quality trailer wiring harness, lights dim or inop, taillight housing breaks and light falls off trailer, license plate bracket breaks.

I decided to give them a try anyway and figured I could return them if needed. Here is my experience installing them. The conductors in the wiring harness are so thin that substandard doesn’t begin to describe them, I kept the original wiring harness in place.

The back of the taillights do not bear against the trailer frame because there is a nut holding the mounting stud to the light housing. This nut is all that bears against the trailer and I can see where this will allow the body of the taillights to flex up and down and eventually cause the housing to fail.

The bumpier the ride the sooner they will fail. I made some spacers from lexan scraps to remedy this. The license plate bracket is plastic, my old one is metal. I kept the old one. Once installed and wired up the lights are bright and work perfectly.

Maybe some reviewers got defective lights or had wiring/grounding problems? Some reviewers complained about the side marker light in the tailights not being an LED. All my lights are LEDs. Other observations; The pigtails on the lights could’ve been a little longer for my installation.

One can shorten them easier than lengthen them! Maybe HF has a reason for a separate ground wire? Grounding the lights internally to the mounts seems to make more sense to me. The connectors supplied were not the best quality, hard plastic shell and wire piercing bridge were not as smooth acting as the 3M or other equivilents I’ve installed.

I used the provided connectors and they worked, just an observation. I’ve had the lights installed for about 2 months and have a couple hundred miles on them, overall I’m very happy with them, time will tell if that changes.

These issues make it hard to recommend or rate higher. They could have earned an easy 4 or even 5.

I purchased the kit to rewire an old trailer I had and never got around to installing it. The other day my neighbor needed a trailer redone so I offered to use my kit. The components were high quality and a near exact match for the old parts I was removing.

Everything installed smoothly, the wiring length was not quite long enough for the large trailer I was installing it on but would work for most trailers up to about 15-18′ in length. Only thing I’m not a fan of are the Scotchlok type connectors included with the kit so I did not use them.

I soldered most connections or used my own crimp connectors. I also did not use the flat 4-way trailer connector as this trailer needed a 7 pin blade plug but I saved the 4 way connector for another time.

If you need a trailer lighting kit you can’t go wrong with this kit. Highly recommended.
