20 Best Translucent Polymer Clay (2022 Updated)

SO GLAD that Sculpey FINALLY brought back their OPAL ACCENTS clay. It is so pretty, & I use it for jewelry and decorative accents in faerie houses and cottages, etc. The one thing that I’d say is that it DOES have a tendency to DRY OUT.

I was set to lose the work & cost of several bricks’ worth! The cracks in my work were quite noticeable. : ( Since I’m horribly allergic to the Sculpey clay softener stuff, it all seemed lost and I was severely bummed.

The store brand of oven-hardening clay is pretty good, and IS quite soft, but unfortunately, the product line tends to lack as great a range of Crazy And Awesome Colors and Effects! So I remained **bummed out** for a long time.

But <3 LUCKY ME! <3 ~~my gal-pal gave me the inside track on a fix-it for crumbly clay problems~~HUZZAH! It's cheap & amazing: 1)First, U gotta snag one of those heavy duty zipper freezer bags, the bigger ones of like a quart or even a half-gallon size, that will REALLY stand up to some squashing & coshing! 2) THEN, U break up or slice the clay into slim, sorta-same-size pieces.

(4me, there were plenty of CRUMBLY BITS, so B ready4that!) lol 3) NEXT, U dribble a few drops of unscented mineral oil over the top of the crumbles in the zipper bag. WELL, GEEZ, GUYS~~I ONLY HAD BABY OIL! The Fates were apparently cool with it~~AND IT WORKED!! Turns out Baby Oil & Mineral Oil are practically the same thing! 4) Anyhoo, U zip up the bag AND, after letting the droplets sink in for a little while, massage, Massage, MASSAGE the bag, BABY.

Whew! My fingers got a work-out. But they stayed pretty clean. AND they didn’t break out in welts, which is my usual reaction to the alternative clay softener product. : ( Aaand. I managed to SALVAGE MY OPAL CLAY!! Good On Sculpey for making a clay that stands up to hard use, I say.

Sculpy Premo is by far the best polymer clay on the market. I’ve been working with polymer clay for 15 years and this is my favorite!! It holds shapes very well, it’s easy to create details that stay sharp.

Premo conditions quickly and is easy to manipulate. The colors are vibrant and mix well; offering you an endless spectrum of colors. Premo bakes well, and pieces stick together with no issues. You can rebake if needed to add embellishments.

Premo is great for making bowls, ring dishes, jewelry, and anything you can create. It works well with alcohol inks, mica powders, stone and crystal embellishments, and can be painted. Premo polymer clay has limitless possibilities!!!.

Premo colors are fantastic for mixing, and so easy to work with! Everything sands to a nice finish and takes textures really well. Sometimes I make them softer/more matte by mixing them with Sculpey Souffle colors and I have had no issues.

I also mix Premo and Liquid Sculpey together to make more “paintable” polymer clay and that works well too! Premo is surprisingly strong and flexible after it is baked, and really delicate pieces hold up well as long as they are baked at the right temperature.

The only color that I have found less convenient to work with is Translucent; it is often more crumbly than the pigmented clays and requires a lot of patience to get it fully conditioned, but it’s worth it!.

I have used this fimo for years. About 7 years ago, they changed the color. it used to be a beautiful deep ruby glitter with a lot of sparkle. Now it’s more of an opaque solid red dusted with glitter.

It’s still good, just not the same effect. It’s also a bit harder and takes more conditioning, but oh well.

I’ve always used Fimo and I haven’t ever been disappointed – which is still the case now! Good quality products as always. Really pleased I will (and have purchased more already) use again. Recommended!.

Haven’t used product yet but expect it to be as good as other Fimo products I’ve used. Plan to mix with other colours to get the translucent effect.

Color is pinker than I thought. Was hoping for a more neutral bone or ivory color, lighter than ecru. Will have to keep on doing my own mix. Of course, quality of the clay itself is excellent, as always.

When will more Premo inventory be available?? Shortages have been ongoing for nearly two years, and Michaels stores in New York City are migrating to Fimo and their cheap Craft Smart brand. So disappointing.

I would like to start by saying that I love Sculpey and I have purchased from their site several times and have never had an issue. However, this time when my translucent Sculpey premo arrived it was STIFF.

Had no give at all, which is fine, I am familiar with Sculpey and I know sometimes you need to give some clay more conditioning love than others, however it was so brittle. It crumpled, I added some Sculpey conditioner oil to it and it did not work either.

I unfortunately had to throw it away. Normally, I would give Sculpey 5 stars which is why I’m giving 3 this time, because it is not typical of them. Just this one instance with my clay.

Great quality polymer clay. Softer than Kato brand. Great for molds. I just put the full mold in the freezer for ten minutes so removing doesnt deform the clay. Havent had any baked pieces break. Also soft enough to hand condition the clay without spending copious amounts of time doing so.

Highly recommended. I love the stuff!.

This clay is cool because it glows in the dark and it is reasonably durable. It’s very stiff and hard to work with, you have to warm it up for a long time with your hands so you have to be pretty motivated to use it, it’s not exactly pleasant to work with.

And it leaves kind of hard to get off residue on your hands. They reformulated regular FIMO to make it softer but for some reason don’t seem to have made a softer version of this. Sculpey makes a softer one but it is almost too soft, not as nice color and doesn’t glow as brightly.

I ordered Fimo for it’s hardness and beautiful hues. In this case, glow-in-the-dark and sparkly. It can be blended. I got clay softener from Sculpey, because this clay is too hard for children. It worked well, if I blend it into the clay and warm it in my hands.

I have been working with Fimo for over 30 years now. I love the ease of working and conditioning the clay and how durable it is after it has been baked. I have tried other brands but always come back to Fimo.

I am loving the effect clay. It allows me to add a little pazzaz to the jewelry I make.

These are hard times for polymer artists. We have shortages due to the pandemic. But I wait until Premo Sculpey becomes available. There is no brand that compares to Sculpey, both Premo and Souffle. It is the most dependable and diverse brand.

And between the free shipping and the rewards points it is worth the wait. Sometime I make out like a bandit, especially if I use Michaels Pro. So be patient with the shortages. My routine in the morning is now to feed my dog, get my coffee and check Michaels for availability.

I also appreciate that Sculpey is made in the US.

A big thanks to Nicola in Dundee Hobbycraft for helping to source noses for craft gnomes I’m making. I didn’t want wooden or polystyrene beads and there were no wooden balls in store small enough. She then suggested baking beads which are sadly not always precise in their roundness.

She was so helpful & bounced lots of ideas off me & then asked if I’d be happy to make them from Fimo as it was easy to do. And she was right – I have plenty of gnome noses to keep me busy & quiet!! She was very helpful & made the visit enjoyable so thanks Nicola.

I really did find Fimo very easy to use.

The last time Inised Fimo was when…. well let’s just say 35 years ago!!! It’s as good as I remember it. Plasticine which cooks harden for life. What better than your own creations for small ornaments.

I can’t believe it’s not a well known product. Kids would love making their own models. Get promoting !.

This clay is very good value for money. It comes in small packets, but you can make a lot out of the clay, particularly if you are making small pendants or beads and charms. It is by far the cheapest place to buy fimo clay I have found on the internet, and it comes with free postage so I don’t have to worry about extra costs.

I have bought clay through this company using this particular product many times now, and it always turns up earlier than expected in good condition, and if you order several clay products through the same link, they all come together in a plastic bag which is great for storing the left over clay blobs! I have made many different clay items with this clay, and have had no problems with baking it and you can leave it out over night and it doesn’t dry out! I have found no faults with this item, and I really like the many colours available.

The only downside I can think of is if you make larger models and items, then you go through a lot of clay, and so its not that great value for money.

I use this product for a lot of caning that goes into mounting clock faces, special pieces of jewelry that need to be sanded down, geez, clay building, caned bowls, I just go crazy with an electric pasta machine as a clay press.

I love the easier to soften formula, that is saving my hands. The dye however is so strong that I would suggest caution while building! Doesn’t come out of fabric!.

I use Sculpey III to make my Whimsicans! I started a little over a year ago and I am very pleased with Sculpey III’s performance in my craft. I appreciate all the different colors that it comes in. But it blends well when I want something a little different.

The baking is very uniform and I don’t have a problem with cracking.

I purchased a variety of colors for my first ever Sculpey projects. The colors were accurate and bright. Baking was easy and I’ve had no issues with my creations! I even purchased additional colors at my local Blick store since I was making so many things.

Great translucent clay. Bakes much darker than the colour seen. Great for mixing with other clays to create a jade effect. Very firm to work with, but does soften.

Sorry, but I will never be buying Fimo again. It gets too soft and won’t go through my clay roller smoothly. i would prefer scullery premo.

I like Fimo Polymer Clay! Specially like Fimo Effects- Transparenct clay. Easy to work with , intesting effects. Highly recommended!

Good range of colours in store. Well stocked. I have worked with FIMO for a long time (since I was at school). So easy to use. Sculpt and then bake in the oven. Will be continuing to buy FIMO from hobby craft.

Really pleased with my purchase. It’s a very versatile medium that can be mixed with like kind clays and mixes well to make other colours. Only your imagination is required when it comes to what you want to make.

Earrings, bangles, pendants, rings, bracelets, little figures, you name it. Enjoy it. It’s great for crafting and creating.

This product does EXACTLY what it says on the tin (or plastic if you’re literal). Roll, sculpt and bake. It’s as simple as that. Pair with the Fimo brand gloss and you’re good to go. I’ve made earrings, pop sockets and cases for my phone and other useful everyday items that you wouldn’t be able to find in shops.

10/10 Fimo!.

I ordered 7 bottles of this, all different colors, and the cap on the black was loose so the whole bag and all the bottles were covered in it. Michaels very promptly replaced them which I appreciate.

The lid on the black bottle on the replacement order was also loose but thankfully nothing leaked. As for the liquid clay, it is top notch. It is great for sealing my clay pieces or using in molds. I love it.

Love this product! It is so easy to use with any silicone mold. The tip of the cap is small enough to fit in small spaces of the mold so I know I’m getting great coverage. I also love that I can control how much of the liquid sculpey is coming out by how much I open the cap.

It’s a great product overall.

I Have been Using Fimo since 1994 I found it incredibly useful for making little sculptures with embedded color not allowing color wear off. I am still using this product for relatively the same aspect.

Now though i build scale Models that i use to get a better definition of Light on my Characters, and Structures. Over the Years I looked for suitable replacements, quite a number of times, and found I could not compare quality at any time, and price most of the time, I would love it if Fimo Had some other products in which to enhance the Building/ sculpting experience Though I am content with what is here right now.

I like the product but it came pretty hard and took a while to soften!

First time using this translucent liquid clay. It was extremely easy to use. The instructions are easy to follow. I simply chopped up my clay and added a small amount to adhere all of the clay back together before cutting and baking it.

Would highly recommend. Can’t wait to try all of the different colors.

i really prefer fimo to premo. It’s slightly tougher and needs a little extra handling to make workable, but is worth the extra effort. I see significantly less feathering when using clay cutters, and it handles better when making 3-d forms.

I’m new to polymer clays, I’ve tried sculpey III before this and I experienced all the issues with sculpey III the more seasoned polymer clay artists have described, that said, FIMO is excellent. Cures hard, doesn’t leave excessive amounts of fingerprints and the colors are vibrant.

Although, I could tell for sure that some if the colors I bought had been sitting on the shelves at the Blick warehouse quite some time. The champagne color crumbled so bad and it needed to be conditioned so many times it was silly, as opposed to the white color clay that was so soft it was like working with butter.

If you’re a noob like me the FIMO feels rock solid to work with (compared to Sculpey III) so get a conditioner (pasta machine) but don’t be discouraged, the hard work with FIMO is worth it for colors and the durability of the cured product.

I’m knocking off one star for the inconsistency in freshness of the clays.

The clay (in all 3 colors I got) is so hard to work with, and so brittle, it breaks into little pieces. I tried to condition them but still hard to work with – not usable basically. I switched to Premo and Soufflé from Sculpey and they’re so much easier to work with.

Won’t be buying Fimo professional any more. Also overpriced compared to Sculpey products.
