Transmission fluid is a lubricant that helps to keep the moving parts of your transmission cool and operating smoothly. When your car’s engine is running, the transmission fluid is circulated through the transmission where it helps to lubricate the gears, bearings, and other moving parts.
This helps to prevent wear and tear on the transmission, and can also help to improve fuel efficiency.
Most cars will have a specific type of transmission fluid that is recommended by the manufacturer. You can usually find this information in your car’s owner’s manual. It’s important to use the correct type of fluid in your transmission, as using the wrong type can cause damage to the transmission.
When it’s time to change your transmission fluid, you can usually do this yourself at home. The process is relatively simple, and only requires that you have the correct type of fluid and a few tools.
You’ll need to locate the transmission dipstick, which is usually located near the engine. Once you’ve found it, you can pull it out and check the fluid level. If it’s low, simply add more fluid until it reaches the “full” line on the dipstick.
It’s also a good idea to change your transmission fluid every few years, even if you don’t think it needs it. This can help to prevent problems down the road, and will keep your transmission running smoothly for years to come.

2. AMSOIL MTFQT-EA Manual SYNCHROMESH Transmission Fluid : 5W-30 for BMW
AMSOIL Synthetic Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid is a premium-quality synthetic lubricant designed to surpass the most demanding lubrication requirements of manual transmissions and transaxles where non-extreme-pressure fluids are used.
AMSOIL Synthetic Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid protects gears and bearings in extreme temperatures. It outperforms conventional oils and delivers outstanding performance from -40°F to 300°F, and it maximizes energy efficiency and resists the effects of heat, oxidation, sludge and varnish deposits.
Unlike its mineral oil counterparts, AMSOIL Synthetic Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid prevents the thinning effects of mechanical shear for stable viscosity, superior film strength and excellent anti-wear performance.
It protects against corrosion, keeps seals soft for long life, and is compatible with brass synchros for smooth synchromesh shift quality.
Our Si had 25,000 miles on it. Wanted to do the transmission service. Looked into different choices. Read tons of positive reviews on the AMSOIL Trans fluid that were very positive on other websites, particularly Civic forums.
We gave it a shot. Considering it could be a placebo effect, I immediately noticed better shifting. If you are familiar with the little characteristics of your respective manual shifter, you might want to consider giving this a shot.
I will not go back to the stock fluid for it. The Si was fun to drive to begin with but a few of the shifts got finicky. This seemed to resolve each one immediately, and made it more enjoyable to drive.
Needed to replace my clutch. With my model car it has a natural high rpm near lockout in 3rd gear. Several years ago I read about this issue and experienced it over and over again. In turn grinding at times.
Because of the rev hang. Put a new oem clutch back in. Added Amsoil synchromesh. Its Blows my mind how the down shifts and just over all daily im and out of gear. Its what I call getting a better version of my car I always wanted.
Only regret is not doing it when I bought the car.
I’m sure this is the best to be bought. Too bad the company building my reman transmissions can’t produce products this good. 2 uncorrectly built trannys in a rowand won’t surprise me if this third one goes.
Ive have had to buy this fluid 3 times in the last year for a whopping 1800miles. Gets a little pricey paying for someone else’s failures. Anyways after a little break time on this transmission I will be back here buying another 8 quarts and will always use amsoil.
These are the exact original equipment manufacturer (OEM) fluids that your vehicle came with. When you select a genuine OEM fluid, you can rely on the high quality and effectiveness of the product and brand without having to if the product will work in sequence with your vehicle.
Protecting your investment is important and choosing the right fluids can be challenging. Improved shift quality. Lower fluid friction. Better fuel economy.
If you live in Canada right now, the shipping took an entire month basically! For a fluid that is essential for your car this just way too long. I cant find this stuff in stores and the dealers would charge a lot.
Personally now I would just go to the dealers to buy this stuff. shipping is just to slow and way to expensive for this.
Doesn’t get any better than OEM Honda MTF. Put down that 10w30 and put real transmission fluid in your Honda / Acura! I would definitely purchase again, or recommend to a friend. Real Deal!
Designed specifically for use in GM manual transmissions. This product has excellent lubrication properties and does not break down. Withstands high temperatures and functions well in low temperatures.
Amber-colored, light-bodied, partially synthetic manual transmission fluid. Excellent as a lubricant. Withstands high temperatures.
I had a synthetic tranny fluid in my 05 gto. Once I changed to the 88900333 fluid I can certainly tell the difference in smoother shifting in my Tremec T-56. I can feel the difference in slickness with my fingers.
Tt”s like liquid Teflon. It is worth changing to. Lonnie.
2 quarts of gm syncromesh 2 quarts of redline high temp Atf. 2015 ss camaro TR6060 transmission shifts great even when cold. Have ran it this way for 15000 miles, no noises, no shifting issue, no particles in fluid when drained, and i run the car hard.
My worn out T5 (in a 2002 Firebird) now shifts way smoother than when I used regular Dex3. I can actually shift into second gear without letting the engine come to an idle now. I have used Royal Purple’s fluid before this, which worked well also, but this works just a little better.
I will be solely using this after the transmission is rebuilt.
Red Line’s Manual Transmission 90W Gear Oil is most popular in Nissan, Toyota and Mazda manual transmissions and transaxles as well as other selected applications. This is a 75W90 GL-4 Gear Oil that’s slightly heavier than MTL and provides excellent protection of gears and synchronizers and its balanced slipperiness provides a perfect coefficient of friction, allowing easier shifting.
Red Line Oil’s MTL and MT-90 allow proper shifting over the entire temperature range which the transmission will experience due to its wide viscosity. The synthetic base oils used have a very high viscosity index which provides relatively constant viscosity as temperature changes.
MTL is a low 70W at very low temperatures and a high 80W, nearly an 85W, at elevated temperatures, providing adequate viscosity to prevent wear and deaden gear noise. MT-90 is a thicker 75W90 version of MTL.
The shear stability and oxidation stability of these products are excellent, thus the physical characteristics of Red Line MTL and MT-90 will change little with use.
If you need GL-4 this is one recommended brand. Of course you can buy OEM, but Red line is one recommended brand. GL-5 will destroy your transmission if it has bronze or copper parts in it. The additional EP additives in GL-5 will eat apart bronze and copper parts.
GL-5 is typically used in front and rear differentials and GL-4 is typically used in transmissions. We have 4 different MT vehicles and they use different fluids in different places. One vehicle uses GL-5 in the front Diff, GL-5 in the rear Diff, GL-4 in the Trans, and ATF in the Transfer Case.
Different fluids are used in different places, so read your OEM manual carefully.
Redline has a reputation for quality. Experienced transmission technicians will often recommend it. For my lowly Toyota MR2, the group experience has been that MT90 is well regarded. Who am I to argue or protest? I drained the old MT90 out.
I think it was there for ten years of low mileage use. The new MT90 went in and nothng bad happened. Everything continues to work normally.
Basically, 75k fluid change for the manual transmission. Oil has been in the thing since September of 2006 (manufacture date) and over the past few months I could hear the transmission in driving speed.
Shifting was getting a little rougher than I liked and I studied the different oils out there. After some research I decided on the Red Line here though I debated heavily with the AMSOil counterpart.
The deciding factor was many different reviews of the MT-90. I can say the change was more than worth it. Transmission is utterly silent and the shifting is as smooth as the 5000 mile mark; possibly better.
If you’re debating on this stuff; rest assured it is well worth it. I’ve used the stuff in the past and must say I think I’ll stick to Red Line when it comes to the lube for my cars.
V-Twin Primary Case Oil Red Line’s new V-Twin Primary Case Oil is designed specifically for †84-to-present V-Twin American motorcycle engines, including aftermarket engines of similar designs. Similar to our MTL, this product is for use in the primary chaincase with wet-diaphragm spring clutches.
Designed to operate over a wide temperature range, this Primary Case Oil improves clutch operation while reducing wear and temperature. Where most synthetics are too slippery for clutch operation, this friction-balanced product is balanced to provide less slip, smoother operation, and helps to apply more power in modified engines.
V-Twin Transmission Oil Red Line’s new V-Twin Transmission Oil is designed specifically for †84-to-present V-Twin American motorcycle engines, including aftermarket engines of similar designs. When only the best will do.
Red Line V-Twin Transmission Oil will keep your V-Twin Transmission cool even when you’re burning up the pavement.
Keep your car running at its best with the Valvoline Transmission Fluid, Amber, 1 qt. This product number 811095 works well with Chrysler vehicles and will keep the parts of your transmission well lubricated as they work.
The manual transmission fluid has a flash point of 220 degrees Fahrenheit and a pour point of -42 degrees Fahrenheit, so you can use it in harsh weather conditions and it won’t freeze. The amber-colored formula should only be used in manual transmissions to keep your ride running smooth.
The synchromesh transmission fluid has enough in the bottle to top off any small leaks and keeps your shifting seamless while driving.
Top quality manual transmission fluid for yellow metals/synchromesh. Test drove 5-speed Jeep Liberty next day. Perceptible, but unmeasured, improvement in quietness and smoothness of shifting. Very pleased buyer.
So so far so good. I put this in my 89 Chevy truck with a 5-speed. It calls for synchromesh standard transmission fluid that you can only get through the dealer. This stuff says it’s an exact replacement for the OEM synchromesh.
I’ve been running this about a week and so far it’s performed well. It shifts smooth there’s no noise at all beat of all I didn’t have to pay that outrageous dealer price. Only time will tell though but so far so good.
It was hard to find because of all of the automatic transmission fluid they had on the shelves. It was literally on the bottom shelf pushed to the back behind automatic transmission fluid.
Red Line Oil’s team of chemists and blenders formulate fully-synthetic gear oil and chemically-advanced additives using only the world’s finest base stocks. This makes Red Line Oil the premium product on the shelf.
It’s not designed to be the cheapest – it’s built to be the best. Rather than cutting cost by blending into polyalphaolefin base stock for it’s motor oil, Red Line Oil only uses superior polyester-based products – resulting in lubricants that are extremely stable at high temperatures while providing superior film strength at lower viscosities where more power can be produced.
The world’s top racing team and most discriminating enthusiasts use Red Line Oil products exclusively. There may be a different sponsor on the outside, but chances are it’s Red Line Oil on the inside.
Red Line MT90 is 75w90 viscosity and provides excellent low-temperature shift ability and improved gear protection at high temperatures. MT90 can be used if 90W GL-1, GL-3, and GL-4 gear oils or SAE40, 10W40, or 15W40 motor oil is required.
This stuff is brilliant. My Mx5 gearbox was a bit crunchy from second to third, especially when cold. This has completely cured it. Its been in for several thousand hard miles and is stiil excellent.
This is GL-4 and they quit making this. Making it more expensive. The dealership replace transmissions now with GL-5 which is not good for yellow metals and causes corrosion. Since its cheaper for all to use GL-5 thats what dealers/mechanics are putting in for transmission flushes.
I bought this 75w-90 GL-4 at a good price and its definitely worth putting the correct fluid in a high heat tranny. Especially when your manual states to use GL-4 only so yes I highly recommend using GL-4 75w-90.
This is the Motul Multi DCTF Technosynthese Transmission Fluid. This particular transmission fluid is intended for modern vehicles that come with Dual-Clutch Transmissions (DCT) made by the likes of ZF, GETRAG, or BORG WARNER.
This is a great option for those of you who want a suitable fluid without having to invest in factory fluids that can cost a small fortune. Please make sure that your vehicle is compatible with this fluid before purchasing.
Although it is compatible with many makes and models certain car manufacturers have to use fluids that contain special properties in some cases. Otherwise, the Motul Technosynthese is an amazing fluid that will deliver optimal lubrication qualities for your transmission at your next major service interval.
I’ve made the mistake of buying the cheapest gearbox oil come service time on a couple of cars and lived with gears that are hard to engage. Motul oils were recommended on car forums, and i thought I’d give it a shot because it’s cheaper than a new gearbox.
This is now the second car that has been saved with this oil. Highly recommended if you are struggling to get it into first in the morning.
Used in a 2018 Ford Focus ST with 16,000 miles. Night and day difference, much smoother shifting and no “notchiness” that I first experienced with the stock oil.
Synchromax is a manual transmission fluid that increases performance and the life of your equipment. It improves shifting, reduces gear noise and increases power transfer to the wheels. It also lowers operating temperatures and provides outstanding wear protection for longer transmission life.
This is for manual transmissions that specify an automatic transmission fluid. Its also ideal for 4×4 transfer cases and motorcycle gear boxes. This is fully compatible with all types of friction materials.
It provides excellent corrosion and oxidation protection without affecting the soft metals commonly found in manual transmission synchronizers.
Fluid works as good or better than the original in my Toyota. These days, with manual transmissions becoming obsolete, it is hard to find proper fluid. I did a lot of background research before buying it.
Transmission fluid for synchromesh transmissions has to do a balancing act between providing wear protection for the gears yet low enough viscosity and friction characteristics so the synchros can quickly synchronize gears speeds during shifts.
Royal Purple is expensive but works. Unlike other oils that are manufacturer specific, it is one of the few that will work in all car and light truck synchromesh transmissions.
Improved synchro engagement in all gears, I only have 500 miles with it so far, but it made a noticeable difference in shift times both for upshifts and downshifts. My synchros weren’t bad, but they are much better now.
Overfilled my NV5600 to 6 quarts and I’m never looking back.
Haven’t gone off-road since changing my crankcase fluid but engaging 4WD on the street is smooth as expected. It’s reassuring to have some quality fluid in there when I need it.
Less slippery low sulfur formula compatible with brass synchronizers – Stable at high temperatures in performance applications – Also available as higher viscosity like MT-85 and MT-90Satisfies gear oil viscosity requirements of 70W; 75W; 80W; SAE 30 5W30 10W30 motor oil – Popular in Acura and Honda; BMW; Ford; Dodge and Jeep – Model # 50204,Vehicles & Parts > Vehicle Parts & Accessories, red line.
This stuff got rid of my notchy shifting. RedLine’s MTL is less slippery than the Honda MTF so your synchros have a higher coefficient of friction with the gear they’re on. This makes the synchros slow the gear down more effectively/faster compared to Honda’s fluid.
This then makes shifting smoother and also theoretically makes it so you can shift faster without causing as much wear on the gears.
New transmission fluid along with new transmission mounts has made shifting a lot better. It’s thicker than you’d usually want if you live somewhere with long cold winters though. At around -15C, it can be hard to get into first gear the first 5 minutes of driving or so while the fluid warms up, after that it’s smooth.
I have used Redline MTL in 2 different Jeep Wranglers with manual transmissiins. One was a TJ and now a JK. This fluid makes a nice difference in smoothing out the shifter and takes out some notchy feel.
Manual transmission gear lube 70W80 GL-4 that offers quicker shifts, improved coefficient of friction, and better gear protection. Also provides better cold shifting and works with high and low mileage vehicles.
SINCE 1979 In 1979, Red Line Synthetic Oil began creating lubricants for the racing industry. TECHNOLOGY Using cutting edge technology, Red Line responds to the technical challenges of today’s performance industry.
Red Line products perform and protect better than any on the market. No compromises.
Purchased the Royal Purple Synchromax fluid for my 2015 Mustang. I was VERY tired of the clunky nature of my MT82, and have been looking at different shift kits to try and smooth it out. Ran across the reviews on this fluid, and even though I was VERY skeptical, I thought, for $50 it’s worth a try.
Holy cow, I cannot even believe the difference it makes! It’s like someone poured all new liquid guts into my MT82! Totally smooth and different feel! Thanks American Muscle and Royal Purple! So even if you just changed out your fluid, HURRY UP and get your Royal Purple Synchromax from American Muscle today! On a side note, I found lot’s of conflicting information as to if I needed to use Ford’s transmission friction modifier with this fluid, even 2 Ford dealers didn’t know.
I ended up contacting Royal Purple’s technical department, and the answer from them is NO, Ford’s friction modifier is NOT needed for the 2015, S550!.
noticed the the MT 82 trans on the Mustang GT is a little noisy and this is on my car with 1700 miles on it. So took a chance and changed out the fluid with the Royal Purple product. Have to say it does run smoother on shifts and at low speed around the neighborhood is quieter.
Turned on the quiet exhaust mode to really listen and yep less whine. For those of you thinking about doing the change of fluid, I did a setup that might make it easier to fill then the lame 1oz pumps on the floor.
Just get a piece of clear tubing about 5 foot. Take one end and put it in the fill hole take the tubing and zip tie it to the exhaust( yes it has to be cool, duh) this will anchor the hose into the fill hole.
The other end jam on the bottle tip after nipping off the tip and just invert the bottle and hold up at your side. Gonna need to pop a hole in the base of the bottle once inverted to allow air to fill and let the fluid out.
all said and done it took less then 20 mins to drain and fill.
Protects against increased heat and pressure Outstanding cold-flow properties Protects brass synchronizers Friction-modified Excellent seal compatibility Inhibits rust and corrosion Long service life | Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube 75W-90 in 946 ml Easy-Pack (12) Count by AMSOIL.
My 2010 VW Golf 2. 5L Manual Trans was hard shifting. The problem was worse in warmer weather than cold weather. At first, I thought it was a hardware issue. I proceeded to change all the worn-out plastic and rubber bushings on my shifter, shifter bracket, etc.
Then I finally changed my manual transmission fluid. It was missing nearly half a liter of Trans fluid! I’m guessing that my petroleum-based Trans fluid had burned off. Big lesson. Check your manual Trans fluid first and go synthetic.
It changed the fluid 4 times until the shifter felt better. From now on I’m changing my Trans fluid every 5-10K miles with synthetic.
Very slick and direct feeling shifts in 2019 Mazda MX-5 compared to OEM fluid when warm. After a few hundred miles the cold shift quality has become a bit firm and requires a bit of patience compared to the stock fluid for the first few minutes of driving.
I don’t mind this as the shift feel is more direct and much slicker when warm. This fluid doesn’t offer the same perfect shift quality when cold as the OEM Mazda fluid but feels much slicker and satisfyingly notchy and direct when at operating temperature.
It literally falls into 4, 5th and 6th and I like actually feeling the synchromesh engage through the shift knob. The lively shift feel from a Miata transmission with this fluid is really amazing and leads to more accurate foot work and will likely aid in transmission longevity.
Ok when i was using regular gear oil for my transmission, the one recommended from dealer or autoparts. I was noticing the my engine was a bit under load. ¿How I noticed that ? Because when I press the clutch pedal in neutral the car actually moves a tiny bit , acting like it was on gear at idle , like on an automatic cars you put in D and it will start move if you release the brake pedal, well my car felt it the same but in very small amount of force hardly noticed when you pressed the clutch but it shouldn’t trying to move nothing at all if is in neutral by pressing and depressing the clutch.
Mine did Also RPM i can see it the needle slightly move up and down by pressing and depressing the clutch, so the motor was receiving some load from transmission gears even in neutral at idle, felt it more when was cold oil was heavy! So I ordered the amsoil and drained the gear oil i was using it.
The load disappeared immediately, not more rpm needle moving when i was engaging or dis engaging the clutch , RPM needle remains in the same spot at idle , other things the I noticed was the i had way smoother shifter and milage in my car increased by 1to 3mpg more or less, i can coast in my car way longer in neutral and im a guy the loves to get the most mileage out of a gallon of fuel.
I fully recommend it. My car is a 2002 vw wagon TDI 1. 9 ALH motor.
Synchromax is recommended for manual transmissions that require either automatic transmission fluids, multi-viscosity motor oils or straight grade motor oils. It is also ideal for 2-cycle motorcycle gear boxes.

Formulated with Royal Purple’s proprietary Synerlec technology, Synchromax is the top synthetic transmission fluid for protection and an all-around smoother ride.
Put this in an E46 BMW with 5 spd transmission. Actually very impressed with the consistency of this oil. It’s not as smooth as some other oils such as the redline products but it’s much more consistent.
Whereas other products seem to become quite notchy over time, the RP Synchromax seems to retain its first day performance. Also doesn’t seem to be as affected by temperature variations as other products.
Great alternative to the to the Toyota 75W transfer case fluid. Shifts are much smoother than just gear oil alone plus the added protection with all the additives in this fluid.
Really improves smoothness of shifts. Used on my E46 M3. Last fluid install was red line 75w90, so I wasn’t too surprised that the syncromax would immediately feel smoother, as it likely is thinner.

Castrol Syntrans is a fully synthetic 75W90 gear oil for use in manual transmissions, transaxles, transfer boxes and final drives where an API GL-4 lubricant is specified. Designed to improve gear selection in cold weather and to reduce noise levels at high operating temperatures Castrol TAF-X offers increased protection for your transmission at extreme temperatures.
I bought this product to refill the gearbox on my car after replacing the reverse light switch. When the old switch was removed I knew that the existing oil would pour out of the gearbox, and fresh oil would be needed after fitting the new switch.
Having topped up the gearbox with the Castrol oil and driven the car, the performance of the gearbox was much smoother compared with before. I have used Castrol engine oil for many years and I know how much better my car runs, so I am impressed with the gearbox oil.
Wasn’t able to collect. I was refunded the purchase price but disappointed that the collection fee was not refunded despite being previously told it would be.
Oil 10 years old but I am willing to take a chance in a ten year old high mileage car to save a few quid. Notchy gear change and slight bearing noise very much improved. Works a treat in Daewoo / Chevrolet boxes which don’t seem to like cheap oil in my experience.
30. 000 mile box oil change essential in these cars.
The conclusion of the transmission fluid manual states that the best way to ensure proper transmission function and longevity is to regularly check the fluid level and condition, and to change the fluid and filter according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
