20 Best Travel Chess Sets (2022 Updated)

Small and compact Chess set for my granddaughter to keep for her own. She says she wants to play with all four Queens. So much for monogamy !! But she has taken to Chess with her brother who has his own Chess set for his birthday.

This is a cleverly designed travel / analysis set and board- small enough to take anywhere but large enough to see and play on. Well constructed and the pieces have strong magnets. Excellent value for the money.

Everything was packed neatly. The chess board itself is beautiful, and the pieces are just as pictured. Also a convenient travel size. I would highly recommend this set.

Nothing about this set is made of wood, it’s 100% injection molded plastic. The hinges and board itself are all one piece with the hinges already stretched to the point of losing color. The board will definitely snap in two simply from regular use.

The squares on the board themselves are just a large printed sticker. I figured maybe the pieces themselves might be wood but no, they’re also injection molded plastic. Everything about this product is a lie.

The photo primary shown isn’t the set you’ll be getting. If you want to see what you’ll actually receive, check out the second photo. Even the title for this product is written to mislead. Natural Boxwood Chessmen is a bald-faced lie.

They aren’t wooden, they’re plastic. You can see the injection seams down the sides. Marrakech Decoupage Chess Board, while an accurate description, intentionally leaves out the word plastic to make it sound fancier than what it actually is.

I want to clarify that I don’t blame Walmart specifically for this. They shipped it swiftly and are handling the return wonderfully. I wish they’d tighten down on sellers who are clearly misleading shoppers as it ruins an otherwise great experience.

The set itself is decent; however, it does not look anything like the main photo (looks like the second photo). Additionally, the description says 17 inch board but this is 11 inches. Also, the pieces are nowhere near as tall as the description states.

Finally, even though the pieces are magnetic as described, the magnet under the pieces are not strong enough and the pieces would still shift if not played on a completely stable surface.

I ordered several games and this is the first one I received. It arrived in perfect condition inside a box with paper. The game box itself has a manufacturers plastic wrap, which is great for protecting the box corners, etc (very nice especially for gift giving).

The game board folds and snaps closed to store the game pieces inside. There is a slight magnetism to it which aids in keeping pieces put. The pieces are good for small and large hands. There is a brief instruction sheet with a small image of the set up of pieces to the board.

My only con would be the instruction sheet because for new players, the image is very small/faint and we don’t know what a rook is or which is the bishop and so on. I did set it up correctly but I also went online to view images to make sure I did.

I’ve always wanted to learn to play chess. Better late than never. Games are rather pricey today and this one worthy of the present $14 price point. It’s especially good for children and for those such as myself, just learning to play.

Additionally, I believe its good for everyone wanting a simple chess set for home or away. I’m very pleased with it.

This little roll is nicely made. It is a good size – and the flexibility allows it to be packed easily.

I gave this to my husband as a gift because we love to play board games and be outside. This two for one makes it easy and convenient as we spend time in the outdoors or traveling. Not to mention we LOVE the design.

Bought this as a gift and they were thrilled. An adorable set they can’t wait to take camping. Made with the usual Pendleton quality we have all come to enjoy and expect.

I was surprised with the quality and craftsmanship. It has a royal or noble feel to it even though it was less than $100. Really quite beautiful. I am happy I bought it.

Chess sets as described. Not of fine quality, but what I expected for the price point. I was very pleased to see that there were piece holders inside.

It is a really awesome deal. I love it. It is exactly as description.

I ordered this for my grandmother to give my uncle for Christmas. He loved it so much. We weren’t expecting such great quality for the price. He loves chess and collects them as well. After all these years and the different ones he has he said by far this is the best one yet.

Its magnetic which is what I was looking for so we can play this while traveling, camping, on the bed, picnic table etc. However, the magnets are so weak the pieces barely stick to the board. And I mean barely as in dont accidentally bump the board or sneeze as the pieces will fall over and roll away.

Its not much better that a regular board to be honest.

Comfortable size and durable. My son and I have played a dozen games on this and both really enjoy the quality. Doesn’t have a strong magnetic feel, but can actually hold the pieces if the board is tilted upside down.

I bought this for my preteen when he started going Boy Scout camping. It was a hit, and he has since decided that this is something he always wants in his daypack for hikes, camping trips, and track events.

The magnetic pieces stay put so you can play almost everywhere and it’s easy to pack. At the last camping trip he organized a chess tournament, and managed to finally lose a pawn. Luckily, GSI customer service is amazing and a replacement piece is on its way!.

I bought this item as an impulse buy but I am 100% satisfied with this purchase. I just recently started playing chess in the last year and being able to carry this around on any occasion. If I’m floating on the river or if I’m just playing at home or the bar with a friend.

I get my fix.

We’ve had a different version of the GSI chessboard for a while that was multiple different games in one. We really only play chess and the board in the other version rolled up with various other game pieces to keep track of.

We really like this set as everything is contained in the chessboard itself, it’s more compact, and the board lies flat.

So light and little; magnets keep the pieces in place. We bought it for camping, and have been surprised how much we also use it in the living room! Means we can play chess cuddled up on the couch, no need to worry about pieces sliding or moving when someone reaches to grab more snacks!.

This is the best portable chess set. Well-made, magnetic, small. Perfect to pop in my young son’s backpack and take on a hike or picnic to play at the top of the mtn.

Excellent, small enough to travel everywhere and goes in my purse!

Small size, good for a quick game or traveling.

This is a perfect starter set to use as you learn the placement and moves. The magnetic feature is excellent and keeps you from spilling your board as your arm and hand move around. It is well made, for the money, and the pieces easy to handle.

The board sits flat with no ridge in the middle. The one thing that would have been nice is if the board had a carrying strap. it does not. Once closed up, you have to carry it like a box.

This is a really nice chess set. There is a small design flaw with the canister that holds the pieces, which is a cardboard tube lined with leather on the outside. The leather folds over at the top of the tube, creating a small lip that the pieces get caught on.

This makes them difficult to remove. The other small annoyance is the Umbra logo on the board (see photo). If I orient the board so the logo is readable, the board is not oriented correctly for chess, the bottom right square (H1) should be a white square.

So when you orient the board correctly for play, the logo isn’t oriented towards either player. Not a big deal at all, but a minor oversight perhaps.

First of all, this is just the neatest checkerboard/chess board you will ever see! I have one son who loves to play checkers and one who prefers chess. I love that this gives you the the ability to play either one.

One side is plain for checkers and the other has images of the chess pawns. It’s compact, portable and all the pieces get tucked away tightly when you’re finished playing. It’s a perfect design! I love products that are functional, but also pretty enough to leave out as part of your decor.

This Rolz checker/chess set has been the best addition to our game room at home. I love the design and leather board. It looks great sitting out but packs up easily to take with us for road trips. It’s great to play in a hotel too.

As always with Umbra they have combined functionality with a great design. Not only is the roll up feature great but having the cylinder for the pieces that fits in the middle of the rolled up board is genius.

Looks great and build quality is good. Magnets are not strong so mostly I don’t find use for that. In one or 2 boxes magnet repels the pawns, so they won’t stay in the center of the square. Otherwise the board is very compact and does the job.

It is suitable for the offered price. I hoped the magnetic is more robust within the center of an of the square. The design is excellent.

Quality piece, the board and the pieces are nice quality and simple for a new player. bought this for my granddaughter to start out on, was looking for basic pieces not “artsy” and was not disappointed.

Great little electronic chess computer. It’s a little small for my fingers (but I purchased it for my nephew who is ten years old. ) It has a lot of different levels starting at the lowest level of “Fun 1”.

I am not sure of the rating of Fun 1, but I’d guess about 800-1000 USCF would be pretty close to accurate. I was able to defeat this level and I’m about a 1200-1400 player.

The game is portable. It doesn’t take up a lot of space and has many levels of play. Brand new as advertised. Smaller than my other one but I like it a lot. Better price than I could find anywhere else.

We live it. Great to learn with. Good size. Great buy and entertainment for the family.

It is nice looking compact and cute chess set. I bought it for my 10-year old grandson in the hope to have time to play chess with him. Had no chance yet but looking forward to it.

The pieces are mismatching in size. And they wobble and are not sturdy. Get it for the board which Is nice for $16 at most. But you’ll have to buy new pieces.

The description is misleading, the whole board is not walnut. Only the thin board on top, the body and drawers are composite/plastic When I got it there were already chips in the composite of the body.

Very sad.

I love to play chess! Mostly I spend evening with my hubby playing chess together. This wooden chess is my favorite. Whenever we play chess my 3 year old daughter loves to throw the pieces here and there.

As this is wooden i am at ease that it won’t break and she not get hurt. Plus it folds into a box making it easier to store all the pieces together.

Recently, in a conversation with his sister, my husband told me that she was hoping to purchase the above item for her granddaughter for Christmas! Well, she lives in Pittsburgh, while we live in Florida! I told him i would try to find the item online.

After visiting the local Target to see what their availability was, I went online and purchased what I had seen in the store! And, to my surprise, shipping was free! My husband’s sister, who is homebound, was absolutely delighted with our efforts to help her with a small part of her Christmas shopping! It was easy for us!.

Bought this as a Christmas gift. the box originally came dented, however, the vendor (OJ Commerce) was so gracious to send a replacement. The friendly experience with the vendor is why I rate this game as a 5 star.

The board is cheap plastic, came as partially bent, there is no way I can flatten it. The pieces are cheap plastic, very light-weight, and because the board is partially bent, the pieces have tendency to occasionally slide off.

Not worth the money!.

Very cheap material; the board is be turned slippery and the chess may fly over the board given its light weight. The red/black color is an odd design but it is useable.

for a n advertised “quality” item, I expected better storage of pieces. the moulding is cheap, the rooks do not fit the moulding space for them. otherwise the item is good. The pieces themselves are quite light in weight.

in all, not the quality expected for the dollar paid. I have now ordered another set. maybe this one can be a gift !.

Der Filz unter den Schachfiguren ist teilweise bisschen verschoben dran geklebt. Erwähnenswert, jedoch absolut im Rahmen des Toleranzbereichs. Empfehlenswert für Hobbyspieler, die ein klassisches Reiseschach suchen, welches auch bei Wind bespielt werden kann, da es magnetisch ist! Viel Spass und en Grüess.
