20 Best Truck Step Bars (2022 Updated)

I love the running boards their super nice nice quality! Look awesome on my truck! The instructions were garbage! It doesn’t tell you how how to put the brackets together I looked it up from a YouTube video.

And I also found out that ithat it is way easier to install the brackets on the running boards before you put them on the truck. the YouTube video showed you putting the brackets on the truck then the running board I found that to be extremely hard.

I will give it a 4 stars out of 5 just because the instructions were terrible but the product is really nice.

My wife bought these steps for my birthday. My truck is the 2020 Silverado Double Cab 2WD LT with the 3. 0 Duramax Diesel. American Trucks needs to update their ability to choose the diesel variant. (I’ve chosen 6.

2V to get this review written). Prior to buying, American Trucks did tell me to contact Westin to confirm fitment. They came well packaged and within just three days. (Local warehouse for us). The package came well protected within and all hardware to install with none to spare.

All I used was a deep 13mm socket, small extension, 3/8 rachet and 3/8 torque wrench. Special Note: Although the brackets are labeled F, DC, PC, they’re not labeled this way in the instructions. When inspecting and dry fitting we determined that DC is the center bracket for the passenger side while PC is for the driver.

I think this is a mistake by the factory in China where these state they are made on the box. The F brackets didn’t matter and were on each side front and back. Hopefully this helps anyone else with their decision.

I replaced the high clearance steps that came on my GMC AT4 with these and I love them! Installation was quick and easy and fit looks great. There was a small issue with some weld splatter in one of the tapped holes and couldn’t get bolt started, but I was able to knock it off with a screwdriver.

I think they look a hundred times better than original equipment and so much easier to access.

These bars are fantastic! Installation wasnt difficult and all parts fit perfectly. Really gave truck a functional finished look. Very solid. Would highly recommend these and highly recommend Auto Anything.

Price was fantastic and delivery was quick.

I had one side almost installed when I found out the last set of mounting holes didn’t match up. Had to take everything back off and call customer service after awhile they realized my truck was made in Mexico and needed a different set of mounting hardware.

When this came, one set of holes was still. off just a bit but I was able to make it work but one set of mounting hardware on each side doesn’t come straight out and looks a bit “imperfect” on my new truck.

Solid bars but incorrect design for my 2020 Chevy Sierra. I also got anti seize lubricant on the bars and plastic things that hide the mounting hardware that won’t come off and looks like crap. This is from getting some lubricant on my fingers from having to remove the bars I had partially installed.

****Note**** Call and confirm they fit for your model. I have a 2020 Silverado 1500 Trail Boss LT Crew Cab. I was told since my Vin starts in a 3 it’s a Mexican Built which changed the chassis (I think) So when my kit arrived it had a “w” stamped on the inside nerf bar by the rear step.

This is the upgraded design that fits. I was lucky. If it had “b” stamped it would not fit and would need a retro fit parts from Westin. Hope that helps someone. I love them so far only been a week. Easy install, look fantastic!.

This is the second set I had to send back. One set from DZ and one from Lund. The reason being they will not go on my 2017 Silverado due to the fact I have GM mudflats installed on the front. The mudflaps made it impossible to install.

I even went as far as calling Lund to ask them if they would fit with the mudflaps and I was told YES, “no problem”. I had the same question for Summitt when I placed my order and they also said: “no problem” with the mudflaps.

I was disappointed because I was given misinformation both times. My only question, why did the outside of the package say 1999 to 2013?? No wonder they did not fit my 2017 truck!.

These were a great addition to my 2021 Nissan Titan. Bolted right on and done in twenty minutes. Very sturdy and seem to be great quality. Only been a week or so, so time will tell. Half the price of OEM and they look amazing – black matches the Pro4x trim on the truck.

So far, so good. Easy to install for 2019 Ram 1500 Classic Crew Cab. NO DRILLING necessary (whew). I’m a big guy, so I did a lot of research about bars and rails. Landed on these due to cost, reviews about no flex, and the fact there were three install/connection points.

This made me feel better about them being able to prevent flexing under load. These have zero give, so I’m pleased thus far. Time will tell, but we’re off to a great start.

Very nice quality product, fairly easy for an old man like me to install by himself. These Stainless Westin Bars look beautiful on the truck, and are the perfect height/location, even for my vertically challenged wife to use! OEM long vertical mounting bolts used in this application.

Bonus gift of extra bolts/hardware left over! All mounting brackets fit perfectly. Be sure to leave all mounting bolts a little loose, in case you need to adjust the fit before final torque-down. Be extra careful handling the bars in the shipping box, it’s barely adequate to protect the bars from dents during shipping/handling.

Mine had two small out of sight dents, easier to keep rather than return. After your bars are delivered, give them a good ‘twice over’ inspection before installation. ALSO: the stainless bars scratch VERY easily.

Do NOT step on the stainless finish.

Bars look good and were easy to install. My only complaint is the front step area should be longer. Works fine getting in, but when getting out my foot wants to step on the bar behind the step, which if it’s wet is very slick.

A longer step surface would solve this. That said, I am happy overall with the bars. Installed on a 2007 K3500 Classic Silverado.

I`ve owned a few sets of Nerf Bars before. And in my opinion Westin is the BEST. They`re easy to install fit great and the Polished Stainless material resists rust. Even if you scrape them against a rock ( as I have done ).

Ordered these nerf bard for my “new to me” 2013 GMC Sierra Extended Cab with 8′ bed from another supplier that promised “fast” shipping and they quoted me 2-3 weeks. Ordered from Summit Racing and they shipped it the next day.

They were typical quality for Westin (exceptional). Now I can enter my truck a lot easier.

I bought the Westin E Series Stainless Steel nerf bars for my 2010 Silverado Exended Cab. I did the installation myself. The instruction state that a thread lubricant such an never-seize be used on stainless steel applications.

Do not do this. It prevents you from obtaining the required fastener torque. Additionally, the center bracket does not fit when bolted up. It make contact with the cab mount coming resulting in a metal on metal noise when driving.

Very annoying. I called Westin and they confirmed that the truck design had changed and that they would need to send me some spacers to account for the change in design. I am disappointed that they had not corrected this already since this product is advertised to fit this model and year vehicle.

I am still waiting for the spacers.

Installed the Westin E-Series nerf bars on my 2008 GMC Sierra 2500HD. Placed order and arrived two days later. Only problem encountered was illustrations on instruction sheet. Light and extremely difficult to determine mounting bracket locations.

One call to Westin customer service and rep told me location of each of the three mounts, front, center and rear. After that, piece of cake! Install took just a little over one hour after receiving info.

Everything lined up perfectly and really helped the looks of the truck and makes getting in/out of truck a whole lot easier. Would recommend to anyone looking for a quality product, good price, easy installation.

Quality piece, very easy installation, I have purchased three sets of these over the years starting in 2006 and I’ve never been disappointed

I ordered my Westin E-Series Nerf Bars on a Monday Night and recieved them Thursday afternoon. The order was placed over the phone and they were extremely courteous and helpful. The bars themselves are exactly what was advertised and they look great on my 2006 Silverado.

I was cautious about getting these bars because I didn’t know if they would fit a 2007 new body style Silverado with Husky mud guards. They fit perfectly and the polished stainless steel looks awesome.

I put them on myself in no time, and I am a small woman! The instructions aren’t the most helpful, but give a general idea of what to do.

I ordered mine on a Saturday. They arrived via FedEx on Tuesday. The box was a little beat up on the end. I put it in my garage until the weekend when I planned to install them. Once I opened the box and verified all parts were there, I noticed a small dent in the driver side bar.

No big deal. Got the old ones removed and install this new one. Moved to the passenger side and found a larger dent that looks like something that happened during manufacturing since it was still neatly powder coated.

Overall they look great installed.

These Step Bars are just what I needed to assist me in getting into and out of my 2020 Ford Ranger Sport. My new truck sits a bit higher than my previous 1995 Ford Ranger, so I needed them so I can get into my truck much easier.

They help out great and look great, too! They were easy to install with the instructions provided. However, I did find a video online that helped out, as well. The first side took the longest to install which was about 1 1/2 hours.

The second side took only about 30 minutes.

Just so happened I installed dealer accessories before(like running boards) and I was mechanically inclined with my own tools, or I would’ve never figured out the slightly confusing instructions regarding installing the rivet nuts that weren’t installed on my truck from the factory.

Once I got past that the rest of the install was a breeze. Even brought out my air ratchet and impact for this. Overall I’m pleased with the fit and finish. They feel pretty sturdy as well. Definitely added a nice look to my truck.

Mounting flanges could be a little wider to help distribute weight, there is a slight flex when I put my 200 lbs on the step. Other wise I am happy with them

Parts arrived on time and in decent condition (box ends open and a small finish ding on the end). But they were a direct fit and the holes lined up perfectly. Didn’t have help so I did it alone and finished in about 2.

5 hours. Straight forward install and a very simple but clean look for my 2016 F-250. Definitely looking for more products from Rough Country soon!.

I was skeptical of these, because on my ’04 Silverado, they mount to the bolts that hold the cab to the frame. That said, they are very solid. I can stand on them to change wiper blades, clean the roof, etc.

, and they don’t budge, and I’m pushing 200+ lb. The pads seem to have enough grip for safe stepping even when wet. I do wish the pads were longer. Installation took about 90 minutes for me. It took me a bit to understand the instructions.

The second side went much faster.

Got these in the all black style to match the black accents on my 2017 Tacoma. Having purchased Lund bars before, I expected these to be a great value with good looks and am not disappointed in that regard.

Only complaint would be with the instruction sheets which are poorly presented. Installation is so simple though that the instruction sheet really isn’t necessary.

I am very pleased with the quality and good looks of the Lund Nerf Bars that I purchased for my 2007 Silverado. Installation was very straight forward if you have basic tools, the instructions are easy to understand.

It took me about one hour to install the first side (after figuring everything out) and only about 20 minutes to install the other side, total time about 1 1/2 hours start to finish. Looks are great and assist getting into and out of the vehicle.

These steps look good on my 2014 Tacoma double cab. My only issue is that while installing, the top screws that secure the steps to the middle support brackets are just a little too long. When I was under the truck, I tightened everything up (not excessively, just wrench tight) and when I got out I noticed a small spot on each side where the aluminum had been pushed out by the screws.

This caused the powder coating to crack there as well. I guess my advice is to be very careful when tightening.

I would have given these 5 stars but for one reason. The powder coating gets into the threaded holes which makes “some” of the bolts very hard to start. Also, if you have big hands like me, you will find the space very tight to get some of the bolts started.

I would suggest either chasing the holes with a tap first or at least putting the bolts in the holes and running them in and out prior to installing them on the truck. This will save you a lot of time and frustration in the long run.

Didn’t have the time so didn’t do the install myself. Shop that I had do the install said the install was straight forward and trouble free, Like the look of the Westin HDX Drop Steps over the thin tube type one; they appear sturdy and more resistant to the elements.

Really like the looks of my Tacoma with them. Price from Autoanything was great too with fast delivery.

This type is mounted to body mount bolts. If you live in a rust prone area these will be an issue to install. The original cab bolts will break off then a whole set of new issues arrive. Great look great support but a bear to install if your truck has any rust issues at all.

Check you cab bolts before ordering to be sure they come loose first, I broke a 3//4 in breaker bar on this install, Please check you bolts first!!.

Stupid how they put generic pictures up. These have 2 brackets, one on either end. The product itself is great, looks good and functions as well as you would like it too. Installation took me about an hour, alone.

Just lay on your back and hold one end up with your foot while you bolt the other in. Directions are vague but there is a youtube video of a guy who puts on the single cab ones, these install exactly the same.

Very deceiving photo. I ordered these because The picture shows a mount in the middle. I read a review that said the stability is lacking without the middle support. These, unlike the picture, DO NOT HAVE A MIDDLE SUPPORT.

However, they seem to be pretty strong. I’m not jumping up and down on them, but. so far, so good. Very pleased.

Remember these are black units, not the chrome picture shown. But very nice items, very well made. Installed on a neighbor’s 2002 F150 Harley Davidson edition and fit perfectly. 45min to remove the chrome nerf bars (kept for when a nephew gets the truck) and 45min to install step bars (he had a recent hip replacement so needs step).

Thick steel plate, sizeable bolts, overall very sturdy, fit the truck frame well, and look great on the black H-D truck. Instructions very clear and brackets stamped to location (DF, DR, etc). Very close color match between black truck and black bars (truck has been garaged since new and less than 50K miles).

I was in the market for black and effective running boards. Nothing extremely pricey. These boards did exactly that. If you’re fairly mechanically inclined, this is a good weekend project.

I love these new side steps. They look good and do their job very well! It took around 3 hours to install but that’s because I had to take my old ones off. Very satisfied with them!

These steps come packaged and protected very well. There are no spare parts/hardware, so careful not to loose any nuts or washers when opening the package. Installation is pretty straight forward if you follow the instructions.

One thing that many have noticed is that the angled piece that slides inside the steps, is upside down in the video. It should be installed with the 90 degree angle upward (flat side up). Other than that, I did this by myself, and after trying the instructions, I gave up with trying to line up the holes on the slider in the steps with the piece that was attached to the frame of the truck, so I took it apart, installed all the hardware on a bench, but left it loose so I could manipulate it and line it with the bolts on the truck.

This made it extremely easy for me. Counting the time it took me to install it and uninstall it, then reinstall it all together, probably took me 2 hours. I’m happy with the purchase!.

I highly recommend you install the brackets to the running boards prior to install. Do not install brackets first for you will be fighting putting the hardware through the nut plates you slide into the running boards.

Work smarter not harder. Loosely install that hardware so you can still slide the backets around. Once you do that you can easily life the board into place and slide the brackets to the studs easily.

These side steps are no joke, heavy duty and sleek looking. Install was pretty straight forward. Hardest part was removing the paint from the brackets that hold the steps on. A battery terminal cleaner worked very well with that.

Make sure you have a helping hand they are definitely too heavy for just one person. Overall very happy with them. I just installed yesterday so I can’t speak of the durability but from what I’ve seen so far I don’t see that being an issue.

Probably the easiest install ever. Directions are garbage but there’s plenty of YouTube vids if you require them. PC = Passenger Center, DC = Driver Center, & all other brackets are the same. Just line up the rail to your truck to figure out which rubber caps you have to pry out of the bottom of your rig.

Looks great & does what it’s supposed to do. and best of all there’s no gap as there is with all the other rails available. As long as they don’t rust within a year I’ll be happy.

I recommend this style, sharp, looks good. Easy to install. Would recommend the step sides for this type of truck. To make it even better, make it all different colors to match the vehicle colors. Fits real well from front to back at your doors on a crew cab.

These were perfect as I got the black appearance package on my truck. Also the ends are welded end caps, on previous trucks with other rails the end caps were plastic and would break or fall off over time.

I expect these to last a very long time on my truck.

These are very simple and easy to install. They do look good. And are super functional without your feet slipping. But on a stock 1500 Silverado 4×4 it only leaves you with like 6 inches of ground clearance.

I’m still in debate to take them back off. Or go with a 3. 5 in lift. Lol.

Just bought my 2017 Rubicon which came without and side steps. Not a problem. i love customize. After looking at my options, these were a good fit for style, build and price. I received the box. A little banged up, but by no means damaged.

I started with the passenger side. The instructions were a little bit confusing. It sounded like I was supposed to use 3 washers. 2 on the outside and 1 on the inside. Lining it up was a little bit difficult by myself.

I ended up using my wheeled mechanics seat to keep the back up while I started the bolt on the front. Once the front was started I pulled out the seat and started the bolt in the back. The middle mount was aligned perfectly at this point.

Instructions worked great as it recommended to get all of the bolts in then tighten when the rail was at the right position. The drivers side experience was mich different. I went through the same process.

Seat holding the back up, started the front, removed chair and started the back. Awesome! So far so good. I get under to put the bolt in the middle. To my surprise, the welded bracket didnt line up. It wasn’t close enough to start it and pull it in.

It wasn’t straight. The welded bracket wasnt welded at 90 degrees like the rest. At this point, it’s getting very late and so have one side on. So close to having these on. I used a small sledge to beat the bracket.

It finally move just enough to get the provided bolt started. I finally got everything tightened down. I wasn’t able to adjust the rail like the passenger side. Its not perfectly straight like I wanted, but it tightened down.

I really like the look of these on my jeep, but the build quality was unforgivable for a $600 part. They said it should take an hour to install. It took me about an hour on the passenger side. It took me 2 to 3 hours on the drivers side since I had to repair the manufacturer’s defect.

I have 2 young kids and a 73 year old Mom who all ride in the Jeep reasonably often. I picked these for the functionality first (lowered side step), look second, and protection third. The only wheeling I do out here in NJ is on the beach or on fire roads/trails, so losing a few inches of clearance was fine for me.

These attach in the same locations as the stock Rubicon Rails connected in and though I haven’t tested them yet, they are solidly built and my feeling is that they will take quite a few hits while offering more protection than you would expect from a “step bar”.

Given the build quality and how far they clearance out away from the body, my guess is they will offer far more protection than the stock rubi rails. Install was easy, had to use a block of wood on a jack to get one set of holes to line up on each side, just a little over an hour for both sides with some help from my son.

I really love the look and the quality of these steps! They are very sturdy and appear heavy duty. They came professionally wrapped which I was very impressed by but my steps still had a little damage (chipped pieces) to the ends of the bars.

I was too excited and had waited a week or so for them, so I decided to deal with the minor imperfections. Other than that I think these side steps will make me happy for a while. I can say that the construction and materials of these steps are worth the price!.

All parts received in the mail and no damage. Instructions are not great. On-line videos help for install and are easy to find. HOWEVER, the factory holes for the middle bracket on both sides of the truck are too small for the supplied hardware.

I had to use a Dremel to cut the body of my truck to make the middle factory holes bigger in order to fit the supplied hardware into the hole for the middle brackets. Factory rear holes are fine. Factory already had nuts in place for front brackets.

These are huge! Not at all proportional to the Bronco Sport and more for the Bronco in size. Install requires major modification and ultimately need to remove the entire underbody protection plate. Instructions were terrible and had to end up taking to a professional installer where it took them 5 hours to install.

I am short – and the step bars are out just far enough to make it annoying to step out of the car. Otherwise the quality is great and I do like them. Nothing Rough Country can do about being short.

The product came as described. Great quality! Really looks good!

After 3 months of waiting I finally received my side steps and got them installed. Overall I’m pretty happy with them. Installation is very straightforward but if you’re not mechanically savvy it might take a bit longer to decipher the poor instructions.

Another frustrating point is you can’t find any info on dimensions. I didn’t want to compromise my ground clearance too much and although these look low profile they still drop down 5. 75 inches from the bottom of the door frame.

People have also commented on the small footprint of the steps. They are a bit small but I still feel planted getting in and out. Last thing to consider is generally speaking these will NOT prevent door dings.

It will depend on the type of car and door but these steps don’t really stick out enough to catch a door from the jerk parked next to you who doesn’t know how to open a door. respectfully.

I love the way the step bar looks overall. But it has a gap between the steps and truck under body. Also the front of the steps curve downwards when my Silverado does not curve. Would like a flush line in accordance with my truck model.

I assume the curvature is meant for the tundra’s downward fender and not my Silverado. The last complaint is its functionality. when stepping onto the step you cannot put your entire ball-of-your-foot onto the step.

The bar stops your foot from comfortably stepping up or down from the truck. You have to turn your foot sideways for comfortable access. I can see this being an issue with slipping down or tripping upwards.

I would not purchase again.

Best decision I ever made. Makes getting into and out of my truck 100 times easier. A must have. I like these because you don’t lose much ground clearance. One step simplicity is the way to go. Definitely recommend.

Looks and fits great! Solid material doesn’t have much ‘bend’ or ‘flex’. They’re a little tucked which personally I liked for the fitment to help take away from looking bulky or sticking out to much.

Great item highly recommend!.

little bit of a pain to install unless you have a lift. worth every minute. best looking and usable set of steps I’ve ever owned. laid out well. foot pads are nice and big but not awkwardly big. still sporty.

hug the rockers good no gaps. overall a 8 out of 10 ,took 2 points off for install difficulty. engineers could have designed easier bracketry to install. but still these steps are amazing to look at.
