10 Best True Crime Audiobooks (2022 Updated)

Oh my goodness! You absolutely will not believe the horrors that went on when you read this book! It grabbed my attention right away and I read it in a couple days. It was so good and so incredibly sad at the same time.

It will definitely leave you questioning how something like this went on for so long and who did no one say anything. Easily the best book I’ve read so far this year!.

So it’s been a while since a book has really grabbed me, and I am a true crime nerd. The accounts mentioned in here about Shelly Knotek is absolutely horrifying and you just simply will not believe what you will read.

This book is not for the faint of heart but absolutely worth it if you are into non-fiction and true crime.

What a great book!! I like true crime stories! It does go into detail about the abuse that took place which can be cringeworthy at times but makes you feel connected to the victims in wanting justice for them all, It makes you sad, and angry at the same but it does come to a satisfying end.

A must read!!!.

My wife loves books by Ann Rule, she can’t get enough of them. The story’s are all different, they are a very compelling read.

Book was in a great condition, currently half way through and a great read

Ann Rule is always good. She handles the genre tastefully and is thorough in telling the story. You understand, as much as possible, why the crime occurred. This book was a little disappointing to me in that there are only three new stories–the rest had all been published before and if you are an avid Ann Rule fan you will have read them already just like I did.

Bitter Blood is a highly detailed and well-written story ~ full of family history and intrigue. Involving several families in intricate ways, this saga is a smooth and engaging read. I couldn’t wait to get back to it any time I had to go off to do something else.

A most satisfying book in the true crime genre.

The author Jerry Bledsoe has made the chapters short enough to work with a train commuter type of reader. The (real life) characters are built in a way that you feel you’ve met them briefly, and can identify with their lives and pain.

Most all have some real depth. The jumps in time line keep the story moving and the brief family histories bring additional insight. I found this book hard to break away from, even though history had already revealed the final outcome.

I was intrigued by it because it is based on a true story that happened back in the 80’s before I moved here to the town where it occured. I was totally unaware of the story until the town had a “Haunted House” for Halloween based on the story.

Townfolk here told me of the story and that there was a book and movie about it. so I did a bit of research and found the book on E-Bay. I still want to see the movie. I am 1/2 way thru the book and it is riveting! I am really enjoying the reading.

This book was very easy to read, well written, and informative. It was interesting to hear about how Gary felt about things going on at work and how this affected his personal life and relationships.

I was also very interested in his explanations of his motivations to be a cop and how his childhood contributed to that and his ability in his work. I like how the book is informative as to how realistic detective dramas are on television, because it makes me realize that some of the things I thought were over-dramatized on TV can actually happen in reality! It seems like a very honest account.

I like that he is open about needing an ego to be successful in his field and would not hold that against him. I do think in the book he slightly sets up the story to be exonerated in the public eye for the ‘crimes’ he was convicted of, but this doesn’t take up much of the book and I don’t think he was convicted for good reason.

I think this is an interesting book for people considering a career as a detective and for anyone curious about comparing the TV detective dramas with reality.

I noticed Gary Jubelin well before this book was out; he looked absolutely charismatic on TV screen. Loved the book. Gary was so honest about all the aspects of his life, I can’t even comprehend how he did it – how he told his story in such a humble, honest way – given this is so ‘fresh’, he somehow was so amazingly open, but not hurting , managed to tell even so personal stories in the most understandable and relatable ways.

This is so real, it stays with you – his way of thinking, his outlook on life and even anxious feeling of the events he went through. I just truly hope than Gary Jubelin will get over the hard bits and will shine again, we as a society can’t afford people like him to be put on the ‘back bench’.

“I’ll never excuse a man who harms a woman, but without this kind of release for some of those who need it, this might be a more dangerous world. ” (Page 132) Under no circumstances should beating up a woman be a release.

“For those who need it” ??? It is repulsive to know it is even an option for a release. There are many ways of releasing stress. The world will definitely be more dangerous with people who think domestic violence is “a release.

This book looks into the lives of the Watt’s family, who appear perfectly happy and blessed with a beautiful house, nice vehicles, and two going on three beautiful children. But on the inside is a family going through tumulous times with bankruptcy and an unfaithful spouse.

Shannan uses her Facebook to promote a product called Thrive and has a very upbeat, perky personality. Her husband Chris is more of an introvert and gladly lets her be the boss of the household for several years.

Then he suddenly realizes he is unhappy in his marriage and cheats on her. Rather than getting the divorce most couples do at this point, he sneaks around for as long as he can and then decides he would be better off without his family.

He then proceeds to coldly murder his family and denies any involvement for quite some time. I felt physically ill reading what he did to his two little girls, who he supposedly “loved to the moon and back”, but that did not prevent him from taking desperate measures for what he thought would be a better life with his girlfriend.

I do not really feel like Shannan deserved this either of course, but it seems like she really pushed his buttons to the breaking point. Reading this book, I thought an episode about this case should appear on the TV series “Snapped”.

I remember this case well and the photos of this family left you thinking how could this be when they looked so perfect? He looked like a perfectly nice, normal guy, but I’ve read enough true crime novels to realize a lot of these murderers appear to be quite physically attractive.

I thought it was kind of stupid Shannan’s family sued Chris for $6 million dollars. It is not going to bring their daughter/sister back and Chris has already signed over his rights to his father-in-law from the estate, so unless he writes a book and makes a ton of money, I doubt he’ll ever make that type of money since he is serving life in prison.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I found this book. I had previously read lost girls by the same author. There are details in the book that will make your heart ache for the cece Bella and shannan. It makes you wonder what people are really hiding behind closed doors.

It also gives you more insight on the victims which I’ve found majorly important, because in a lot of crimes like these the victims get somewhat forgotten and the main focus is on the perpetrators. It’s an extremely great read, one you could finish in a night or two.

It’ll make you get emotional but it’s well worth it.

This was a really easy read and as most of the facts had been made public, the writer did describe them in sequence fairly well. He also concentrated on Shannon Watts personality more so than other writers who have covered this event.

I felt it was a good insight into how people generationally create facades for themselves as a family and are never truthful to themselves or others and how it can culminate in tragedy out of nowhere.

I would recommend this book for anyone concerned with family violence.

As a student of psychology I am very interested in how the human brain works and why people behave how they do. I have read various books on serial killers and I very much enjoyed reading this book as it has more variety of serial killers along with dates on their victims deaths and names which are also very accurate.

I also liked the fact that there are little boxes on each person and their background. I think the book itself is brilliant because the author hasn’t just focused on sex of the serial killer, location or era which I have come across in some books before.

The cover is very dull and basic but when you’re writing about something as gruesome and dark as serial killers, that’s all you need. The introduction looks into the history of serial killers and the different types of people who killed, for example, for profit, out of passion, sexual satisfaction and even the ones simply obsessed with death.

He even goes as far as to write about what makes a serial killer and how to notice traits in young children, as Ted Bundy showed as a child. Overall this book has everything you could want to know about the most high profiles serial killers and I would recommended it to anyone with an interest in this field.

A good read. Quite thick book . I enjoyed the content (not in a creepy,mad murdery kind of way lol!) Very interesting read. I recommend this book.

Was good but didn’t contain much information felt rushed almost still worth a read

The book I found was very limited in any fresh information after having watched the TV series. There was a great deal of repetition of information simply to fill pages.

Great book, attention to detail and to timeline first class. I’m 3/4 through the book and really enjoying it.

Brilliant. Amazing policing over a number of years which ultimately put John Cooper behind bars for the rest of his life.

It had been a long time since I read this true crime story. I had a lot of hate for the boys mother. I mean how much can you seriously take? This is a story of many things verbal and physical abuse on children.

The bond between brothers. The Murder of their mother and what happens after is a fast pace emotional read.

This is one of the saddest books I have ever read. There is something very, very wrong with our social services system in the United States, and particularly California, that allowed two boys, from birth, to suffer the whims of violence and neglect that these two boys suffered.

That they eventually killed their abusive mother is not surprising. What is surprising, is that they suffered her abuse for so long with NO adult intervention on their behalf. Tina Dirmann did an excellent job in telling their story in this book.

(It’s hard to believe it’s her first, and hopefully she will continue writing books. ) All of the adults mentioned in this book should be taken to task for their ho-hum attitudes towards this never-ending abuse, if not criminally charged with allowing it to go on.

The boys’ mother suffered severe psychiatric illnesses, undoubtedly paranoid schizophrenia. However, it should never be expected that minor children, who lived with the sequelae of severe mental illness, would know enough (or be brave enough) to turn to authorities to save themselves.

The mother is the only parental figure they ever knew; that she treated them so criminally day after day, year after year, was not for them to judge, or to know enough to do anything about. It is really unbelievable that nothing was EVER done for these boys to save them from their mother.

I am so sad for Jason and Matthew. I hope that Matthew has found some peace and has made a good life for himself, and that he continues to see and support his brother. Is it too much to hope that Jason will get treatment and will be able to continue his education in prison, and will someday come under the scrutiny of a caring judge who will give him a chance to live a normal, productive life? One can only hope.

Someplace in our legal system, there must be a place for juveniles and young adults who have suffered at the hands of their parent every single day of their lives to get help, instead of such severe punishment, just as we have finally, finally realized that battered women deserve our pity and our understanding and our help.

I am ashamed to be a member of this society where we punish children for finally acting out to save their own lives and sanity.

I really enjoyed this book, I couldn’t put it down I was hooked right when I first started it. It is so unfortunate that it had come to this that these boys felt this was their only way out. Highly recommend!.

Excellent author. Makes reading a book enjoyable. Of course, this one has some sad content but, they did make it out.

I bought this book 4 days ago and I already finished it. I rememebr when I saw the news about these girls back in 2013 but never actually knew what happened. John Glatt did an amazing job with this book.

If true crime intregues you, this is definetly a good read.

This book is interesting. It is very detailing. Once you start reading this book, it is hard to stop.

Ann Rule books are always a great read. My wife loves them so much so, that she has a list of the books that she has read and the ones she hasn’t read. As a matter of fact,last night she finished off the last one I got her on E Bay ” Lust Killer” and now want’s more.

Since this is about true crimes that had really happened, reading this book made my skin crawl. He was truly a sick, and twisted monster. Those poor girls were pure, and young.

I have always found myself fascinated by Ann Rule’s stories. She writes smoothly of true crime, and allows reader to truly picture the story within our minds. “Lust Killer” tells of Jerome Brudos the lust killer, who randomly picked his victims, and then sadistically murdered them.

While the story saddens me for the victims sake, Ann Rule knows how to tell the story. A+ for Lust Killer.
